A MAN has been described as lucky to be alive after being involved in a fall at Thurlstone Quarry.

Woodhead Mountain Rescue Team were called out on the evening of July 4 at 20.36 to Thurlstone Quarry to assist Yorkshire Ambulance Service with an incident.

As well as the Mountain Rescue Team were the Yorkshire Air Ambulance crew and the Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) along with Yorkshire Ambulance Service.

The other climber, Ross Keeble, took to Facebook to thank Woodhead Mountain Rescue Team and provided an update on the climber’s condition.

Unbelievably, the climber managed to stay on the rock avoiding the unthinkable and lay in wait for the emergency services to arrive.

He was treated for suspected spinal injuries and a possible leg injury, transferred into a vacuum mattress for immobilization and onto the stretcher for the carry out of the quarry to the ambulance.

SUCCESSFUL FIRST HALF TERM FOR JRSO INITIATIVE AS the end of the school term approach’s, PC Booler and South Yorkshire Police’s team of Junior Road Safety Officers, are thanking everyone involved in helping to improve the parking situation at Ecclesfield Primary School.

FACTORY SHOP TO CLOSE

THE Original Factory Shop on Manchester Road, Stocksbridge, is to close, along with 31 other branches of the retail chain.

The Original Factory Shop (Tofs) have got the go-ahead from creditors with its Company Voluntary Agreement (CVA) proposal.

According to a spokeswoman the CVA approval promised to “put the business on a much stronger, financial footing to deliver the turnaround plan. While this is a tough measure, reflective of the broader retail environment, it is good news that TOFS will be in pole position to push ahead with their new journey to growth strategy.”

ECCLESFIELD Parish Council’s Past & Present Archiving Project is holding a ‘Meet the Archive’ event on the theme of sporting activities, sports days and more.

This is taking place on Wednesday July 18 from 1pm to 6pm at the Parish Council Offices, Mortomley Lane, High Green.

Christine Handley of the project said: “We are organising the event to celebrate our local sporting heritage, school sports days and Chapeltown Baths. We would like people to come along with their memories of the baths and their sporting highlights from elsewhere.

“We will have some of our archive collection of local history material on display including photos, maps, pamphlets and brochures. There will also be an opportunity

to see some of the slide shows we’ve put together, go onto our website to view the images there, and look at our collection of local history books and reference material.

“We would like more people to get involved with the archiving project and our open afternoon will be a chance for people to come along and find out more. You don’t have to be a history expert or have lived all your life in the area to take part. Young or old, everyone can contribute.

“We recently had a work experience student from Ecclesfield School who spent a week with us working on some of the archiving projects.

“The aim of the project is to capture the rich and varied local history from across

the parish. One of the things we are keen to do is to put more ‘names to faces’ for some of the photographs that we’ve had donated to the archive. We have a collection of mystery photos that we would like help with, so please come along and see what we have.

“Our open afternoon is a free drop-in event and everyone is welcome. It begins at 1pm and finishes at 6pm.”

Writing competition welcomes gnomes

By Emily Hewat THE Trans Pennine Trail has recently welcomed the addition of two new wood carvings in the shape of gnomes.

The carvings were hand crafted by local chainsaw artist Stephen Tarr who has previously produced other wood carvers ‘Swooper the Golden Eagle’ and ‘Barney the Owl’ for the trail.

Secretary of the trail’s conservation volunteers, Kate Dobson, wanted to encourage children to take an interest in the nature in the local area so teamed up with local primary schools to create a writing competition for children to take part in.

The children were asked to write a story which mentioned

the two wooden gnomes and the final entries were judged by local author, Sarah McDermott.

There was an abundance of creativity from the entries with the winner for Key Stage 1 Eliza Smith from Thurlstone Primary including gnomes having strawberries stolen from them in her story.

Meanwhile, the winner from Key Stage 2, Hollie Smith from Millhouse Primary, set her story in a fairy kingdom. Both girls went on the Trans Pennine Trail specially to visit the gnomes.

The names for the gnomes were picked from the competition entries with Stephen Tarr choosing ‘Sleepy John’ and ‘Clumbsy’ as the final winners.

Millhouse Primary chose the name ‘Sleepy John’ because of the gnome’s sleepy expression and mentioned that she regularly uses the trail for bike rides.

Kate Dobson believes that using wood carvings will spark the interest of local children and is “A good way to explore the Trans Pennine Trail.”

The winning entrants will be made available to the public later on this year and there will be a special naming ceremony for the wood carvings in August.

Trans Pennine Trail conservation volunteers hold workdays every Wednesday and the occasional Saturday maintaining the trail as a pleasant environment for all.

CHARITY THIEVES ON CCTV A HILLSBOROUGH shop owner was disgusted to find that thieves had broken into the premises and stolen a charity collection tin overnight.

THE well opposite The Lord Nelson Inn on Barnsley Road, Hoylandswaine, is a fantastic sight at the moment after it was dressed by local people using flower petals and natural materials pressed into clay. The images this year will depict the theme of children’s songs.

It went on display on Saturday 7 July and will remain in place for about a little over a week or until the colour begins to fade.

180th anniversary of Huskar A MEMORIAL service has been held to mark the deaths of 26 children who drowned while working underground in a coal mine near Barnsley 180 years ago.

The girls and boys, aged between seven and 17, died after a storm caused a torrent of water to flood part of Huskar pit in July 1838.

It forced a change in employment law to prevent children from working in mines.

The service, led by the Bishop of Wakefield, took place at All Saints Church in Silkstone.

It is the culmination of a five-day programme of events commemorating the disaster.

Witnesses sought after teenagers assaulted in Ecclesfield Park ECCLESFIELD officers are appealing for witnesses to come forward following an incident in which two teenagers were injured.

At around 8.30pm on Friday June 22, students thought to be from Ecclesfield Secondary School gathered on Westwood Country Park on Greaves Lane,

celebrating the completion of their GCSEs. It is then reported that an altercation broke out between around ten girls, all aged between 16 to 17. Two girls, both aged 15, suffered cuts, scratches, bruises and swelling to the head and face as a result of the incident.

BRASS BAND TO PLAY GARDEN PARTY

AWARD-WINNING Hade Edge Brass Band is set to play St Anne’s Church Summer Garden Party to be held in Carlecotes on Saturday July 21, starting at 2pm.

Strawberries and cream and refreshments will be served in the grounds of the church and hall, with the event organised to raise funds for the upkeep of St Anne’s Church, as well as towards the cost of refurbishing its historic organ.

This is the third consecutive year for this much anticipated event, which draws large crowds to the historical and beautiful settings around the Grade II listed church.

Past and present photographs of the church and local area will be on display and there will be games and fun for all the family, as well as a number of classic cars. The highlight of the line-up is a 50-year-old, 130-horsepower Frazer Nash that came third at Le Mans in 1949. There will also be a woodland nature trail, raffle and some activities for children.

Reverend David Hopkin said: “The Summer Garden Party is the highlight of the calendar for many people in this area and is our major fundraiser for St Anne’s church. We hope as many local people as possible will be able to support us this year.”

St Anne’s church was built in 1857 by the Chapman family who owned Carlecotes Hall. The church has regularly Sunday services and hosts christenings and weddings throughout the year.

At around 7.25pm on Saturday June 2, it was reported that a 15-year-old boy was walking through Hillsborough Park when he was approached by two unknown teenage boys.

It was reported that when the victim refused to lend them his phone, he was followed to Owlerton Green when the two boys threatened the victim and took his phone from him.

Valley Music Festival – first grants made to local groups THE Valley Festival has made cash grants to three local primary schools - Deepcar St John’s, St. Ann’s Primary and Royd Nursery Infant School and also to Deepcar Training Band.

It is hoped that these grants will help them buy music education resources to help young students enjoy making music.

A spokesperson for the festival told Look Local: “We are hopeful that they will all come back and perform us at next year’s festival on April 13 2019.”

Building up to the big date in 2019 – the festival will be promoting performances throughout the year at Fox Valley.

The first of these performance show-

cases is on July 21 at the Fox Valley Band Stand between 12 and 3pm.

Hilary Osborn, the Deepcar-based music director of the festival, will be showcasing her singing students past and present. She has been teaching singing for 30 years and has had many successful students. Many of who have gone on to conservatoires and as choral scholars to universities including Cambridge, Durham and Kings College London.

A number of her former students are successfully carving out professional careers in musical theatre and as performers, gigging musicians, choral conductors and teachers.

Hilary herself is a classically trained

singer and has a passion for encouraging people young and old to use their voices skilfully and safely across all styles of vocal music including music theatre, rock, folk and popular music. Hilary also classical singers.

She teaches beginners and up to Diploma level. Or just helps those who like to perform and get the best from their voice.

The showcase on July 21 will feature some of her most talented current and former students. Come along and hear Hilary, Emily Atkinson, Jacob Ward, Sarah Jabir and Joe Shaw’s jazz set and many others.

Tuesday July 3, Dragons V Waterfront G.C. This week’s first event saw a visiting team from Waterfront G.C. come to challenge our Stocksbridge Dragons. This proved to be a great day for all with some nice golf from either team and all bathed in glorious sunshine.

SHEFFIELD TIGERS LAND IPSWICH WIN JAMES Shanes lauded the influence of mechanic Henning Loof after shattering his best score for Sheffield Tigers in a 52-38 triumph over Ipswich in the speedway on Thursday.

Wood and Shanes got a slice of luck when ex-Tiger Jack Smith fell and Connor Mountain slowed down when on a maximum that got reversed in the reserve race.

With Sheffield eight to the good, Bjerre clipped the back of second-placed Heeps in a horror smash on turn two that saw medics rule out both riders.

Wright and Shanes took the lead to double figures and then tactical substitute Nico Covatti had no joy in trying to make inroads in heat five despite Nicol’s exclusion for hitting the fence.

The American would later pull out despite attempting to continue in his next race.

Ipswich hung in there with wins for guest Scott Nicholls, Schlein, Covatti and Mountain helping to shrink a 14-point deficit to eight.

However, Proctor finished with a flourish thanks to a pair of wins either side of a Shanes success to ensure the visitors went home empty handed.

Club records tumble for Penistone during busy week

Despite the high temperatures Penistone Footpath Runners achieved success in several of local races.

Trunce (Monday) The week kicked off with over 40 Penistone runners taking part in the Trunce race series. Laura Gill was third lady back in a time of 32.00.

John Halstead achieved second in the junior boys race in 16.41.

Spencers Dash (Wednesday) The latest Spencers Dash race saw Gareth Cooke claim second place overall in a time of 22.25 and Kieron Reed join him on the podium in third place (22.48). Category winners were Rob Lees (MV40), Alan Knox (MV60) and Sue Higham (FV65).

Hoylandswaine Hill Race (Friday) Next up on Friday were the junior Hoylandswaine Hill races where Penistone’s younger athletes fared well on the demanding course.

The ever impressive Hugh Mackie was the pick of the bunch winning his race after a close fought battle

with teammate John Halstead. Hugh finished the course in 13.57.

Oxspring Hunshelf Amble (Saturday) Penistone’s own race, the undulating 7.5 mile Oxspring Hunshelf Amble, was run in sweltering conditions on Saturday morning. Penistone’s Becky Timms was first lady back in an impressive time of 68.15.

Julian Williams excelled in the hot conditions to beat off strong competition to take first MV50 in 66.44.

The club had another category winner in Barabara Haigh who took first LV70 in 92.05.

Cock Hill Fell race (Saturday) Ian Charlesworth and Brent Lindsey competed in the Cock Hill Fell race, both finishing in the top 10, Ian achieving sixth and Brent 10th.

Jack and Paul’s Fun Run (Sunday)

Sunday saw 205 runners take part in the annual running of Jack and Paul’s fun run and again the Penistone youngsters put in great performances with Hugh Mackie winning the boys race, Meg Stead coming second in the girls race and Graihagh Turner claiming the final podium spot behind Meg. DABKA Round Donny Run (Sunday) John and Dawn Broom took part in the inaugural Round Donny Run, a 30k multi-trail stage race, finishing third mixed couple.

Run for All Leeds 10k (Sunday) Three Penistone athletes competed in the Run for All Leeds 10k. Hannah Butcher (45.23), Luke McGuinness (49.51) and Michael Walsh (50.56).

Northern Athletics Track and Field League at Wakefield (Sunday) Penistone rounded off the week by sending a squad of athletes to compete in the Northern Athletics Track and Field Division 4EC Fixture Three at Wakefield Thornes Park.

Competing against seven other teams, Penistone managed a very creditable fourth place. There were many excellent performances with 16 club records being broken and six new club records being set. Golf day success for Bolsterstone MVC BOLSTERSTONE Male Voice Choir’s annual Golf Day on July 6 raised £2,000 for the Royal British Legion.

The sun shone on the successful day at Stocksbridge Golf Club and ended in the evening with a concert by the choir and an auction and raffle.

Before the concert, the choir, conducted by their new musical director Daniel Timmins, sang ‘Bring Him Home’ outside after representatives of the Penistone branch of the Royal British Legion carried out a ceremony to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War, carrying the standard and raising and

lowering the flag to the sound of the bugle.
