MANCHESTER ROAD CLOSURE WHERE AND WHEN * Section of Manchester Road to be closed for six weeks * Buses and other traffic will have to use bypass * Drop-in session at The Venue on July 18 AS part of work to re-locate Stocksbridge waste water treatment works, Yorkshire Water will close Manchester Road for six weeks during the school summer holidays.

sentatives from Yorkshire Water and the bus company Stagecoach will be there to answer any questions residents have. It will be hosted at The Venue, Manchester Road, Stocksbridge.

Whilst the road is closed, a clearly signposted diversion will be in place via Vaughton Hill, A616 Stocksbridge Bypass, A61 Penistone Road/ Halifax Road, Leppings Lane and Middlewood Road.

The road will be closed from midnight on Sunday July 22 until Sunday September 2 in order to lay a new sewer from the current site to where the new sewage works will be built next to the company’s Ewden clean water treatment works, close to the junction with Moor Hall Lane.

A Yorkshire Water spokesperson said: “We do understand that the work will cause disruption for residents and commuters, especially those using public transport. Whilst buses travelling along the diverted route will have longer journey times than normal, we will continue to run buses to the same frequency as normal. We will aim to maintain connections with Supertram as best we can during this time.”

If local residents are unable to attend the drop in session and need information about buses Stagecoach has provided, they can be contacted direct on: Telephone - 01226 202555. Email - yorkshire.enquiries@stagecoachbus.com

Before the closure takes effect, a customer drop in session will be held on July 18, from 2pm to 5pm. Repre-

ST MATTHIAS CHURCH TO CLOSE DOORS AFTER 128 YEARS

ST MATTHIAS Church on Manchester Road, Stocksbridge, is to close its doors for the final time after 128 years of serving the community.

The church is the largest in the area, seating up to 500 worshippers and delving back through history records a time when 1,000 people were in attendance. However, the congregation has vastly dropped in recent time, dropping to 43 five years ago and now to just 15 on some Sundays. St Matthias was built in 1890 in memory of Samuel Fox, the founder of Stocksbridge’s steelworks. It is full of artefacts relating to its history and although alternative uses for the building were considered in an attempt to keep it open, none of them have worked. However, before the church is closed forever, there will be one last celebration. On Wednesday July 18, at 7.30pm, the Right Reverend Dr Pete Wilcox, the Bishop of Sheffield, will present a special service and the community are invited to give St Matthias the send-off it deserves. All previous vicars of the St Matthias have been invited and anyone who has been christened, married or confirmed there is especially urged to attend. The building will be sold off by the Diocese of Sheffield.

The rescued and reused bike scheme was named winner in Partnership Excellence (Public/ Private Sector) at the MRW National Recycling Awards 2018 last month. The MRW National Recycling Awards aims to recognise and celebrate best practice and innovation in recycling and waste management. The award joins the project’s existing accolades from earlier this year, namely Gold in the Transformation in Environmental Services category at the IESE Awards and highly commended in the Public/ Private Partnership category at the LGC Awards.

The Barnsley scheme which started in September 2016 has now saved 750 bikes from landfill, bringing them back into use for sale or hire. Bicycles that are taken to Barnsley’s household waste recycling centres (HWRCs) for disposal are instead diverted to Cycle Penistone CIC for refurbishment. Once restored to their former glory, they are sold onto the local community at affordable prices or made available for children to hire at Elsecar Park. Cllr Roy Miller, Cabinet Spokesperson for Place, said: “This award is recognition of the excellent partnership project that is delivering great results for Barnsley residents. This fantastic scheme is not only helping people to recycle more but also to benefit from the reuse scheme itself, getting bikes at affordable prices. “As part of our #EverybodyThink campaign we’re encouraging residents to recycle as much as possible. If you’ve got an un-

wanted bike you can donate it to the scheme at any of our household waste recycling centres. If it’s in good enough condition, it can be repaired and refurbished for someone else to enjoy. “With Barnsley hosting some high-profile cycling events including the Tour de Yorkshire and the forthcoming Town Centre Races, people might be feeling inspired to take up cycling and enjoy our beautiful countryside - it’s easy to hire or buy a bike thanks to this awardwinning project.” Donations are welcome - unwanted bikes can be brought to any of Barnsley’s four HWRCs or residents can email hwrcpermits@barnsley.gov.uk to arrange collection. For more information on getting into cycling in Barnsley, visit www.barnsley.gov.uk/cycling and to find out where the rescued bikes are headed, visit the Cycle Penistone CIC website at www.cyclepenistonecic.com/

Social café in Stocksbridge wins award A PROJECT which aims to integrate isolated people within their local community has won a coveted national award in recognition of the work it undertakes. The Meeting Place, which is run from the community hall at Christ Church Stocksbridge, has been named as a Community Project Award winner and receives a £2,000 prize. Sarah Knightley the Social Café Coordinator and John Cornell Chair of the leadership team at Christ Church, received the award at the United Reformed Church General Assembly held in Nottingham on Saturday July 7. The awards, sponsored by national church insurer Congregational Insurance, recognise the efforts of churches that engage with their local community, to establish and maintain social initiatives. The Meeting Place Social Café was developed out of discussions between several key services in the valley, who identified a need to provide additional support for people who are isolated and find it difficult to access support, or for those in need of companionship. The café is funded through the Methodist and United Reformed churches with support from Sheffield City Council and has the backing of Stockbridge Town Council as well as voluntary and statutory services and organisations in the area. The weekly session held on Monday mornings is run by a team of 15 volunteers some of whom provide activities such as crafts and games, whilst other volunteers work on a one to one basis with members where a specific need has been identified, others prepare the breakfast and lunch. Support and advice is also available to those wishing to access organisations and services as well as information about local community groups and other activities in the valley. Sarah Knightley said: “We are delighted to have been presented with an award for our work with

isolated people in our local community. The Meeting Place Social Cafe provides a friendly, supportive place that people who are feeling lonely and isolated can come to each week to mix with others, take part in new activities, find out about other lo-

cal groups, and receive support in accessing local services. “The prize money will enable us to introduce new activities and opportunities for our clients within the Social Café sessions. We have also identified a need that some clients require one to one support

to actually help them get out of the house to come to the Social Café, so the prize money will help us to extend our service in order to provide this support. We would also like to be able to offer more trips and outings.”

relating to large-scale, industrial fly-tipping, hare coursing, machinery theft or livestock theft. Rural crime is a serious issue for farmers, rural businesses and those who live in the countryside, and it can have significant impacts on a farm or another rural business. Angela said: “Rural crime can have devastating impacts and I recognise that is a very important issue for many of my constituents.

“I fully support this new initiative by the NFU and commend them for their ongoing work to tackling these serious issues. “I am committed to working with the NFU in our efforts to tackle rural crime and begin to rid this blight on our countryside.” NFU Deputy President Guy Smith said: “The NFU has teamed up with the charity Crimestoppers to provide a service for farmers and the public to give information

anonymously about these crimes. “With relevant information being passed to the police, this service could help to provide key leads in the pursuit of these criminals. “I want to encourage anyone who has experienced, witnessed or has any information about these rural crimes to come forward and call the line - your information could be extremely valuable.”

Brown bins are in for north Sheffield

CHANGES to recycling services in Sheffield are being introduced across the city throughout August to October – with the north of Sheffield included in the first phase. Sheffield City Council and Veolia will roll out changes to recycling services with a new brown bin to replace the current blue boxes. Black bin collections will not be affected by the changes to recycling bins and will continue to be collected every two weeks. The blue and new brown bins will have their own separate collection days. When the changes are introduced existing blue bins will be used for card and paper and the new larger brown bins (which are the same size as the black

bin) will be used for plastic bottles, cans and glass.

is inviting residents to sign up for email alerts for service updates.

All residents will be notified of how these changes will affect the way they handle their waste and recycling, with leaflets going out to all households and notices being placed on bins.

Under the new service a bin will be emptied every week on the same day from each household. The four weekly pattern for collections will be black bin, blue bin, black bin, brown bin.

The changes, which were approved at Cabinet in January 2017, will be introduced in two stages for the north and south of the city. Leaflets and other communications will start going out to residents this week, explaining the changes and the phased approach to implement them.

This means the black bin will be emptied once every two weeks, the blue and brown bin will be emptied once every four weeks.

Each household will be given a collection calendar at the same time as the brown bin is delivered and the council

The obsolete blue boxes can be retained by households for personal use, such as planters, toy boxes and garden storage containers, however those who don’t want to keep them can take them to a Household Waste Recycling Centre. Any collected blue boxes will be recycled.

The council say that benefits of replacing the blue box with a brown bin include increased capacity for paper and card recycling, tidier storage of recycled materials reduces litter blown from boxes, easier handling of bin than blue box and annual waste management saving of £750,000. The annual waste management saving of £750,000 is made possible through more efficient collections. Collecting just one type of waste means that specialist collection vehicles are no longer required. The new vehicles will have increased collection capacity and they will only need to take recycling to one location each week. This means that collections are quicker to complete and fewer vehicles are needed.

People can continue to take any extra recycling to local recycling sites across the city. Go to www.veolia.co.uk/sheffield to find your nearest site. Provided it is no larger than the blue bin, excess paper and card can be flatpacked, tied up and left next to the blue bin on collection day. The council will also rollout recycling facilities for paper and card, glass, cans and plastic bottles to all flats in Sheffield by March 2019. People can sign up for service updates about bin collections at www.bit.ly/ sheffbins More information about changes to recycling services is available at www. sheffield.gov.uk

South Yorkshire students targeted with latest road safety package

THE fire service is launching a new road safety package geared towards educating Year 10 students across South Yorkshire about how to keep safe on the roads.

OCEAN’S 8 (12A)

What’s On

19th July 2018

The ‘H16HWAY’ package has been developed by South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue, with support from the South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership, and aims to provide young people with the tools and advice they need to keep safe on the roads as pedestrians, cyclists, scooter riders and passengers. Head of prevention and protection Steve Helps, said: “Every death on our roads is a tragedy, but it is even more keenly felt when it is a young person who loses their life. Young people are over represented in our casualty statistics when it comes to road traffic collisions, therefore it’s important they receive reminders about the safe use of our roads to prevent them from becoming victims.” Joanne Wehrle, Safer Roads Manager at South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership, said: “Unfortunately, there have been a total of 1522 children and young people between the ages 10 to 16 reported as injured over the last 5 years (2013-2017) on South Yorkshire roads. Of this number, 275 of them, tragically, were either killed or seriously injured as a pedestrian, passenger in a car or as the rider of a motorcycle “We support packages like H16HWAY in helping us to deliver key road safety information and advice to young people in a bid to encourage safer behaviours.”

The new package is to be delivered by Fire Community Safety Officers and will involve film clips and group discussions. Each session will last for approximately one hour and the package is free of charge. The service is looking to deliver the first sessions in schools around South Yorkshire from September 2018. As one of the single biggest killers of young people, ‘H16HWAY’ will focus on a number of road safety topics: • Pedestrians – Distractions, risky behaviour and finding safe places to cross the road

• Cyclists – Undertaking long vehicles, blind spots, hi-vis items and bike maintenance • Scooter riders – Wearing the appropriate gear and minimising the risk of road rash • Passengers – Wearing seatbelts, the risks of driver distractions and what to do if you feel unsafe in a vehicle • What to do in an emergency situation Any schools requiring further information about the “H16HWAY” package or to book a session, please contact South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue education advocate Julie Claytor on 07990 951643 / jclaytor@syfire.gov.uk or Community Safety Co-ordinator Claire Walsh 0776841802 cwalsh@syfire.gov.uk.

Forgotten Mighty Ironworks of Milton to be uncovered THIS July archaeologists will be working at Forge playing fields in Milton, close to Elsecar, to uncover one of the great forgotten ironworks of the north. The Milton Ironworks were opened in the late 1790s by the Walker family of Rotherham. The site was owned by the Fitzwilliam family of Wentworth Woodhouse, only a few miles away, and it was named Milton after the Fitzwilliam heir, Viscount Milton. The site changed hands several times, and was run by various ironmasters, before finally closing in 1883. For the first time archaeologists will be excavating part of the site to see what remains of the ironworks underground. Using old maps and the latest in geophysical technology, archaeologists will target areas which might provide clues to the past. Working with local schools from Barnsley and Rotherham, and members of the local community, archaeologists will uncover forgotten

history and help Barnsley to discover and record it for the future.

“The work being carried out at Milton Ironworks is part of an exciting programme of activities which will be happening over the next few years for local residents and the people of Barnsley to get involved in and help make history.

Megan Clement, of Great Place Wentworth and Elsecar, said: “Over 135 years ago, on what is now a playing field in Milton, would’ve been an incredible whirlwind of sound and noise from the blast furnaces at the ironworks. The structures that were being crafted were world famous and being shipped around the globe. They included Southwark Bridge over the Thames in London and bridges designed by Marc Brunel. They were phenomenal feats of industry.

The excavation is part of the Great Place Wentworth and Elsecar project (a three-year Heritage Lottery and Arts Council England funded project) and the Elsecar Heritage Action Zone, a partnership between Historic England and Barnsley Museums. The community dig will take place from Saturday July 21 to Saturday July 28. There will be the opportunity to visit the site for tours on Sunday July 22 at Milton Gala. Places on the excavation must be booked in advanced, but are free of charge. For more information and to find out how you can get involved contact Elsecar Heritage centre on 01226 740203 or email elsecarheritagecentre@barnsley.gov.uk.

Councillor Roy Miller, Cabinet Spokesperson for Place said, “The investigation is an fantastic opportunity for local people of all ages to learn about their heritage. They will have the chance to get hands-on with the past and work with archaeologists and experts from Barnsley Museums over a two week period.

NEW RAINBOW ROOM BRINGS COLOUR TO COUMES SPRING CHILDREN’S CENTRE

THE new Rainbow Room at Coumes Spring Children’s Centre is proving to be a big success. The light, airy unit has been specially designed around the needs of younger children and has direct access onto a carefully planned garden area. Children and staff both love their new space and are looking forward to lots of exciting activities through the year. The aim of the project was to create a place where younger children can develop their confidence, early learning and language skills in a small group. By providing an additional building just for our younger children, the centre have also freed up space in the Rising Stars room so that they can provide more places for older three and four year olds whose parents are returning to work and wising to access the new, free 30 hours of childcare. Coumes Spring is especially proud of the continuity of care provided. Staff turnover is very low and this helps children to develop a sense of security within the setting. Another important feature is the Kingfisher out-of-school club which children can continue to

attend after they have moved up from Nursery. Staff take children to Oughtibridge Primary School in the morning and fetch them in the evening. There are lots of exciting activities, new experiences and fun. At the end of the busy school day it is good just to hang out with friends and enjoy each other’s company. During the school holidays, the Kingfisher Club is open to all children aged from three to 11 from any school in the area.

MRS MATTHEWS SAYS GOODBYE AFTER 34 YEARS

A TEACHING assistant who is to leave the school she has worked at for 34 years will bid a tearful farewell on Friday. Margaret Matthews, 63, arrived at the school as a temporary childcare assistant in September 1984. But she applied for a full-time position there soon after and never left and now

“The school has a special place in my heart and although I’m retiring, I will be coming back once in a while.”

Assistant headteacher, Sean Sly, told Look Local: “I am sure I speak for everyone at Royd when I say we are incredibly grateful for Margaret’s incredible 34 years of dedicated work at Royd.

Family Notices

It’s not too late to make a Will... Hello, I’m Jane Bowland, your local Estate Planning Consultant of 12 years experience. I am an expert in helping people arrange their Wills, Trusts, Lasting Powers of Attorney and Pre-paid Funeral Plans. I specialise in helping all kinds of people gain peace of mind by providing professional estate planning services, but with a personal touch. I offer a FREE consultation without obligation for anybody who would like to know more about any of the following:

• Making a basic Will • Setting up Lasting Powers of Attorney • Protecting your home for future generations • Pre–paid Funeral Plans Having a Will in place ensures your assets go to who you choose. It makes the whole process much easier for the people you leave behind and it puts in black and white exactly what you want to happen, avoiding any misunderstanding or arguing. Setting up a Lasting Power of Attorney gives the people that YOU choose the legal right to look after your financial and personal affairs if you become unable to do so. Without one in place, your spouse, partner or family members are NOT automatically able

to take over. Make sure you avoid the distress this can cause you and your loved ones. I know that planning for the future is a very personal matter. Not everyone is able or wants to travel to an appointment in town to sort out their affairs. I can visit you at a convenient time in the comfort and privacy of your own home to discuss your circumstances. My visit and consultation is completely free and you are under no obligation

to do anything. If you decide to make any arrangements you can be safe in the knowledge that all my professional services and work are fully insured and I am a member of the Society of Will Writers, so all my clients are assured of being fully protected at all times. All my clients (and their families) that I have helped in the past have been very happy with my services and tell me they have gained great peace of mind knowing that they have sorted everything out.

Jane came to see my parents to help them protect the family home. She really made us all feel at ease, especially my parents. We had no idea what we could do to protect Mum and Dad. Having set up trusts and Lasting Power of Attorney’s, Mum and Dad can get on with their lives without worrying, knowing everything is now in place. Thank you Jane!

The coaching duo will look to turn their attentions more to the set piece and game plan, in the build up to the first friendly fixture of the campaign against Hope Valley away on Saturday August 11. Newton’s fine form continues

Local Sport ERNEST THORPE Halifax Road, Thurgoland 0114 2882152

MOT’s £35.00 NO BOOKING REQUIRED

Mon - Fri 8.30 am - 5.00pm Sat 8.30 am - 12.00 noon ON a glorious sunny day at Bracken Moor, Stocksbridge first X1 entertained title chasing Parkhead. Stocksbridge captain Pete Broomhead won the toss and put the visitors into bat and after only two overs, the Stocksbridge opening bowlers of Joe Hibbert and Jake Vickers had removed both the Parkhead opening batsman in similar fashion - caught behind by the impressive young wicketkeeper Ben Lyons (five catches and a stumping). The Stocksbridge attack then took wickets at regular intervals with some hostile quick bowling leaving Parkhead scrambling to a

mere 90 all out in just 26 overs, with Joe Hibbert being the pick of the bowlers with five for 26 backed up by Jake Vickers’ two for 35 and then a wicket each for Jack Newton and Liam Grayson. Stocksbridge now having their lunch with scones and cream to finish knowing that a solid batting display would bring the 25 points home but after the fourth ball of the innings, opener Matt Price was walking back to the pavilion after being caught out, Anthony Siddall joined Jack Newton at the crease and that was the only sniff that Parkhead were going to have.

The league’s form batsman Jack Newton, who followed his 111 not out last week against Hallam, hit a solid 61 not out to send the visitors packing their bags at 5.30pm. Newton’s nine fours and three sixes were backed up at the other end by the classy Anthony Siddall who finished on 30 not out - a great overall team performance matched by the excellent teas and weather. Stocksbridge second X1 travelled to Whittington Wanderers with several players missing after winning the toss captain Chris Ogley elected to bat on what looked like a

pitch that was going to deteriorate over the game.

TOYOTA YARIS GLS 2000

But unfortunately the Stocksbridge batsmen never really troubled the scorers and were unable to post a reasonable score for the bowlers to ball at.

Tested May 2019 98,000 miles

They were eventually removed with only 56 with on the board. Eric Price was the only batsman to post double figures with 28, Whittington chased the score down comfortably with Mark Wingfield picking up the only wicket.
