PARTYING YOUTHS DAMAGE STOCKSBRIDGE GOLF CLUB AROUND 60 young people turned Stocksbridge Golf Course into a party last Friday night, causing damage to the greens.
South Yorkshire Police PCSOs met with club representatives to discuss ongoing issues the club are having with young people trespassing on the golf course and its perimeters. A spokesperson for the police said: “Not only is this private land, it is disrespectful to treat the countryside with such disregard. “Last Friday approximately 60 young people congregated, drinking alcohol and lighting fires - in the current dry climate this is a serious fire hazard! “There was also evidence that Nitrous Oxide had been used by some of the group.

“The photographs are of how these people left the area after their ‘party’. This is not acceptable and anyone caught on the golf course by the police will be dealt with accordingly. “Please respect the area in which you live.” The incident follows a similar occurrence last week when the golf club reported that campers had been on the third medal tee. A club spokesperson commented: “We know schools nearly out but in this continuous hot weather - a fire as you know can quickly spread, as per the moors. “Please, if these teenagers are family or friends, please make them aware of the dangers - plus they have left a mess!”

Advice issued following shotgun theft DETECTIVES investigating the theft of shotguns from two properties in Sheffield and Rotherham have issued advice to licensed holders and are asking witnesses to come forward. Between 10.15am and 12.30pm on Thursday July 19, it is reported that offenders unknown broke into a house in the Wharncliffe Side area, gaining entry and taking one shotgun. The second offence is believed to have occurred sometime between 1.45pm and 7.45pm when a house in the Upper Whiston area of Rotherham was broken into.
Detective Chief Inspector Jon Cousins, said: “While an investigation in to both of these incidents is in the early stages, we are treating the matter very seriously and wish to ensure that other licensed firearm holders are aware of this recent criminal activity. “Committed in broad daylight it appears that these incidents could well have been targeted and I’d like anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious in the area, in particular any suspicious vehicles around the times mentioned, to come forward in confidence and report it to us. “I’d also like to take this opportunity to remind licensed gun
holders to check their security measures. The most up-to-date security advice can be found online in the Home Office Firearms Security Handbook. “The shooting community is close knit and I’d ask that people spread the message amongst those that you know are licensed holders to make them aware and to ensure adequate security measures are in place.
England star comes home to banner
“It’s paramount that we recover these guns and identify those involved. Any information you have can be passed to police via 101 or to Crimestoppers on 0800 555111. Please quote incident number 413 of 19 July when passing on information.

THE communities of Penistone and Thurlstone had a whip round last week to have a banner made up that announces their pride of John Stones for his outstanding performance at the 2018 World Cup campaign. As a Thurlstone lad and having attended Penistone Grammar School, John gained a place at the Barnsley FC Youth Academy. Now playing for Manchester City and the national side, John is at the top of his game but at the age of just 24 he clearly has a long future in the beautiful game. John is still very much a local lad and rather that returning from Russia and heading off to

his home near Manchester, he came back to where his roots are. Karen Tyas and Spike Mayston from Penistone have reacted to the overwhelming support for John’s achievements in Russia and rallied the community to fund a six-foot banner marking his achievements. Spike told Look Local: “School children from Springvale Primary School helped me put the banner up whilst John and his family were inquisitive as to what all the fuss was about. “And much to the joy of the kids - and me - they came to see the banner for themselves! John signed a few shirts and chatted to us all.
Lee McClure, head of Springvale School, remarked: “John was very humble and clearly moved by what the community has done by having this whip round for the banner. “He was a natural with the children and I think that they will remember this encounter for a very long time indeed.â€? The banner is on the Trans Pennine Trail bridge above Bridge Street for all to see. After the cost of the banner was raised, a further ÂŁ323.25p was left over and this is being donated to Claire Throssell’s Heads Together Barnsley Charitable Trust in memory of Jack and Paul Sykes.

INTREPID fundraiser Dave Critchlow will be putting his best foot forward to take part in an incredible 125km walking challenge from Valenca in Portugal to Santiago de Campostela in Spain.
YOU MEASURE – WE MAKE
Dave, a volunteer at the Stocksbridge Steel Valley Project, said: “I think we should all so something to benefit our local community and Gary and I wanted to get healthier and fitter, so a sponsored walk seemed like the perfect fundraising activity. We were also inspired by a TV programme which saw celebrities attempting the Camino Francais. “We’ve rather cheekily named our Just Giving page ‘two fat old men walking,’ which was exactly how it felt at the beginning. We hope it will grab people’s attention and make them smile. We’ve lost eight stone between us and are really enjoying our training before the challenge officially begins in September.”

They expect the gruelling walk to take them at least two weeks to complete with the route crossing beaches and forests, Roman roads, medieval bridges, traditional towns and historic cities.

The Purple Butterfly Appeal raises money to fund Purple Butterfly rooms at Rotherham Hospital. The £75,000 purpose-built rooms offer privacy and dignity to patients nearing the end of their lives, and their families. The money goes towards funding the building works, specialist equipment and sleeping facilities. “It was an easy decision to select the Purple Butterfly Appeal,” Dave added. “It is especially poignant for Gary as his wife Diane recently passed away at Rotherham Hospital following a stroke. “I know Stocksbridge people are a caring and charitable bunch, so I really hope they support us to raise as much money as possible for the Charity’s appeal.” Gary and David are gearing up for the challenge by walking several times a week
and are learning Spanish to enable them to travel around the route’s rural areas more easily.

Teacher advised to stay home by police after awards anger AN awards ceremony at a local school enraged parents and led to the teacher behind the ceremony being advised to stay home for the last day of school by police.
seriously. “Safeguarding everyone in school has to be mine and the governors’ top priority. I will continue working with the governors and police on this matter.
Mrs Begum drew up a list of light-hearted awards for pupils at High Green Primary School, with categories such as ‘most nosebleeds in a year’ and ‘person most likely to forget primary school’.
“Regarding our last day and the concerns raised around the awards ceremony, I would like to say a huge thank you to all the parents who have taken the time to speak to staff and governors or send their comments to us.
However, some parents took exception to the prizes and reacted angrily. Addressing parents, headteacher Diane Smales said: “In light of recent comments made on Facebook, I have been speaking to the chair and vice chair of governors and have also taken advice from South Yorkshire Police.
“Both myself and the governors value all comments from parents and do take them seriously. Myself and the chair of governors have already spoken about all the comments made and are looking at what we can take from this to help us to continue to improve our school for everyone.
“In view of the threat of violence made towards Mrs Begum on the last day, it has been agreed that to that she should not be in school tomorrow.
“I would like to apologise if anyone - pupil or parent - felt that an award was insensitive or that mine or Mrs Begum’s actions were inappropriate or offensive. None of this was intentional.
“I completely understand how upsetting this will be for many children but I have to take any threat of violence or aggression towards staff or children very
“We both care deeply about the children and have grown to love them over the years for who they are and the young people
they have grown into. We are so proud of all their achievements and think they have all been amazing ambassadors and a great asset to our school. All the children should be very proud of their end of year results; well above national and the best we have had for a number of years. “A credit to all the children's hard work and dedication and also Mrs Begums commitment to helping the children do their very best. “I personally value the relationship that I have with parents and feel privileged to have shared seven years with you all - some families I have known for much longer, some parents I have known since we went to primary school together. “So, it is an emotional time for me as well as the children, as I am saying goodbye to families who I have known for many years and may not see again. “I would like to end with my very best wishes for the future for all our year six children and I hope you all have a well earned break over the summer.

Right royal visit THE growing reputation of the Astoria Centre at Barnsley has been given a further boost by Royal Film Premiere organist Donald MacKenzie agreeing to perform a concert at the Barugh Green venue. Leaving behind his prestigious role of playing for all major film premieres and royal events at the flagship Odeon Cinema, Leicester Square, London, Donald’s concert at the Astoria Centre will be on Saturday August 11 at 2.30pm. Donald said: ‘I’m looking forward to making my first appearance on the restored organ at this unusual but exciting venue. “Barnsley is gaining an enviable reputation for being the place to visit to enjoy the nostalgia, sights and sounds of the cinema organ and it’s music.” Advanced tickets and information on 07944 566972.
The following day, Sunday August 12 at 1.30pm, the Astoria Centre will hold an open day. Visitors will get the rare opportunity to view behind the scenes and see the thousand or so pipes, percussions and special effect that make the cinema organ such a unique musical instrument. In addition to music from the Compton organ there will be music from the centre’s collection of more modern organs. A selection of archive material will be on view as well as items to showcase the ongoing preservation and restoration work that takes place in the centre’s workshop. Many items from the workshop now helping to keep these historical instruments playing both in the UK and around the world. Volunteers will be present to answer any questions. A truly interesting view into part of our rich musical heritage. Information on 07944 566972.
Fundraiser putting in the miles again LOCAL fundraiser Debbie Cundy has been on her bike again to raise money for charity. The Oughtibridge woman rode from Inverness to Dumbarton on the hottest weekend of the year with temperatures of 30 degrees Celsius. Cycling over three days and clocking up 293.43 miles, Debbie rode for two fantastic Sheffieldbased charities Weston Park Cancer Charity and Endeavour. Endeavour works with some of England’s most disadvantaged and forgotten young adults. If you would like to contribute, you can find Debbie’s fundraising pages at https://www.justgiving. com/fundraising/debbiecundy-1 or https://www. justgiving.com/fundraising/debbie-cundy5

STEEL VALLEY RIDE A HIT ONCE AGAIN THE Steel Valley Ride, a 31 mile mountain bike challenge covering the dramatic landscape of the Peak District and the quiet roads and bridleways around Stocksbridge, took place on Saturday July 14. The event was held to help raise funds for the Steel Valley Project a countryside management charity in Stocksbridge working to improve the environment for people and wildlife in the Upper Don area. However, this year had an extra special element to it as the ride also helped to raise funds for the British Mountaineering Council ‘Mend Our Mountains’ campaign. Part of this campaign is to raise money to repair the boggy sections on the iconic Cut Gate bridleway, linking Langsett and Howden reservoirs. As the Steel Valley Ride route travelled over Cut Gate, the charity decided to donate a percentage of this year’s entry fees to the campaign, totalling a fantastic £468. Just under 90 riders completed the gruelling 31 mile challenge on Saturday in sunny conditions and soaring temperatures. Some finished in an impressive 3 to 4 hours, whereas others made use of the whole day, but special mention goes to one lady who entered the ride after stopping

the riders taking part a great experience, playing a huge part in making the event so successful.
Tom Newman, Project Manager at the Steel Valley Project said “Everybody deserves massive congratulations for completing their own challenge, whether it was to finish quickly or just to finish, push their mileage on a bike, or raise money for charity.”
Particular thanks also go to Trek Sheffield for their support throughout the event. They gave up part of their shop on the day to host the Event HQ, and also helped with the creation of a promotional video and donations for participants.
Stocksbridge Mayor, Cllr Julie Grocutt, started off the riders in the morning and then drew two winners for a prize draw to win a pair of mountain biking shoes (donated by Trek Sheffield for the first 50 entrants) and a £50 Trek voucher (donated by Stocksbridge Town Council for the first 100 entrants).
Liberty Speciality Steels and Dransfield Properties Limited (Fox Valley Shopping Centre) also provided parking facilities for the event participants and volunteers.
Congratulations to the two winners, Jonathan Lambert and Rachel Young. All the returning riders received a free water bottle, donated by Trek Sheffield. With such high temperatures, many waived their complementary hot drink and made use of their new water bottle instead! An event of this nature would be impossible to run without support from local businesses and people in the community. The charity is keen to thank all the volunteer marshals who gave up their time and helped to give
The charity has received lots of positive feedback and thanks from event participants about the day, including one person who said “The hills were very hard work, but the amount of variation in terrain, signposting, friendly marshals, feed stop and organisation were brilliant.” Speaking on behalf of the charity, Tom Newman said “It was a great day, thanks to everybody involved and for all your support for the Steel Valley Project and Mend Our Mountains campaign.” For more information on the countryside management work carried out by the Steel Valley Project, please visit www.steelvalleyproject.org

A NEW chapter opened for the Church of England in the Stocksbridge valley as around 200 people gathered on Wednesday July 18 to give thanks for 128 years of worship in St Matthias Church. Tributes were paid to members of the community who served the church over the years including, most recently, Vera Grand and John Dobson. Sadly, the costs of maintaining the building as a place of worship had become unsustainable.
The Church of England continues to serve the whole Stocksbridge valley through Cornerstone. This includes St John’s Deepcar, St Mary’s Bolsterstone and the Stocksbridge Christian Centre. The Cornerstone clergy are Revd Hilda Isaacson (vicar), Revd Steve Pendlebury and Revd Keith Crookes. The photograph by Ian E Bullock shows Revd Steve Pendlebury Bishop of Sheffield and Revd Keith Cookes being licensed.

To help with the food situation we had a field ploughed and planted with seed, this will provide maize which in turn will be used to make Ugali which is their staple diet. Of course we had party days and handed clothes out for the children and adults. March visit was amazing this saw two classrooms completed, painted in the school colours, on the roof is a solar panel so they have electricity. I had a surprise for the children I took a television along with DVDs, I had a table made special height so all the children could view. This photograph shows the school - if you are wondering where the children are they are watching Happy Feet they have never seen snow and didn’t know what a penguin was, their faces were a picture. The children you see here are from another school trying to watch television.

Munga, the little boy bitten by the snake, is always the first child to greet me, he is now in mainstream school albeit in a class for six or seven years because of his learning disability. He has on many occasions asked me to visit his home and until now I have declined, afraid of what I would find. This time I succumbed with my driver and interpreter, Justus. Munga took me to his home - this was corrugated sheeting walls propped up with wooden stakes, roof corrugated, different coloured pieces of material covering where holes had formed, the door another corrugated sheet.
On that day there were 120 adults and children. To her this gift to me was everything. A few weeks ago I received a photograph of the original school built 2009, the rain and strong winds had washed away a complete wall, hopefully this will be rebuilt. Fund raising begins again in Denmead in August, no further visits planned for this year but classrooms three and four in the pipeline for next March 2019.
I must say thank you to the people who have donated clothes and to the people who have donated When I opened this, what greeted me was a large money, friends family and ex work colleagues, evpiece of foam with three smaller pieces on the ery penny is very much appreciated. floor, hens running round, this one room is home Helen Flanagan, to Munga’s mum Petra and four children. I met with a local Fundi (builder) he gave me a quote to build a house - £500. This included all materials and labour. I gave the go ahead for this to happen and paid for this as it was being built, Munga and his family now have a two roomed house with wooden lockable door and it was completed We had to have more uniforms made as there are before rainy season started. All the funds raised now 85 students and of course additional classroom paid for the school. Dear Sir Stocksbridge Community Care Group were pleased with the response to their advert in Look Local asking for volunteers for their various projects.
I read with amazement David Ogle’s letter in the recent edition of Look Local (19th July), where he states that Ecclesfield Parish Council is biased towards Grenoside and Ecclesfield, while ignoring Burncross, High Green, Thorncliffe and parts of The Friendly Visiting Scheme, Dementia Cafe and Chapeltown and has done this “for decades. Friday Drop-In all benefited. Anyone else wishing As a former parish councillor I take exception to to join, either as a volunteer or as a service user, this. It is simply untrue. As I have now moved away from the area I cannot comment on the existing council. However, while I was involved, the Parish A fond farewell to Geraldine Council supported Chapeltown Baths for 20 years, after the Labour controlled city council tried to close them (surely this benefitted everyone).
As well as on-going concerns about the roll out should contact Chris Currer on 283 0141 or by of universal credit, affecting how people’s benefits are paid, I have held a number of surgeries and email at stocksbridgeccg@gmail.com. meetings with constituents about various local Many thanks to all our volunteers. Following many concerns raised with me, I contacted council and Amey officers to ensure they were cut asap, and I am glad that this Stocksbridge Community Care Group was done soon after I made this contact. People have also raised issues regarding problems with the buses, parking, speeding on Greengate Lane and antisocial behaviour at various locations. I am chasing these issues up and will report back as and when I have responses from relevant officers, although I will not be able to give details on individual cases as this would contravene confidentiality.
Supported the building of the new sports facility in High Green, where without their support, this would not have taken place. The toilets in Chapeltown were re-opened thanks to the parish council.
I am always keen to hear of any problems people are facing in the ward, and I will always try to help. If you do want to see me about anything at all or discuss anything with me you can email me at adam.hurst@councillor.sheffield.gov.uk or telephone me on 07919 946 341
While I was on the parish council the finance committee supported many groups throughout the area, while encouraging people in our local communities wherever we could.
I am also on Facebook, and can be found by searching for me or going to https://www.facebook. com/cllradamhurst/
All of this was achieved at a relatively small cost to residents. As I said at the outset I cannot comment on the existing council (of which David Ogle is a member), but in my experience the parish council has achieved many things.
Many thanks, Adam Hurst ,Labour Councillor for West Ecclesfield

Perhaps David should get his facts right before writing such negative letters in future. Best wishes, Colin Taylor, Former Ecclesfield Parish Councillor
Guild thanks Stocksbridge and Deepcar Townswomen’s Guild wish to thank those local businesses who donated raffle prizes and displayed posters for their charity lunch held at Christ Church on July18. This was a huge success with around 50 people attending. Thank you to them also for being so generous. The profits will be added to other funds raised throughout the year and presented to representatives of Independant Domestics Abuse Services (Judith House Refuge) in Barnsley, at our AGM in March. Margaret Derbyshire, Secretary
Geraldine Bebb has retired from St Ann’s Catholic School after 25 years. She started working there in 1993 after Father Callaghan asker her to help out for two weeks. She has worked for every headteacher the school has had and has also been on the governing body twice, serving two terms. All three of her sons went to the school and now two of her granddaughters attend. When a young teacher called Lucy

Yorkshire Day On Sunday July 29 at St Mary’s Church on Packhorse Lane, Councillor Gary Lakin and myself will be running the coconut shy, loads of prizes to be won! All proceeds to go to High Green’s volunteer group. Gary and I will be posing for photos for a small donation! Looks like its going to be a great day on the day. Bring the kids and win some fun prizes.
We are also still desperate for people to help us water, either with a 4WD or some muscles to help carry containers!
David Ogle, Councillor High Green, High Green volunteer.
Many thanks, Catherine
Sudoku
May I, through your publication, extend a heartfelt thank you to all those involved in Saturdays Charity Lunch to raise funds for Stocksbridge Dementia Cafe and other related dementia work carried out by Stocksbridge Community Care Group in the local community. The meal was excellent, served by volunteers who had given up their precious time, and the company was so warm and friendly. The funds raised will be used to improve the quality of life for those ‘living well with dementia’ in our community. To me the day proved more than ever that together we can make a difference. Thank you again, Dave Cooper, Stocksbridge Dementia Cafe & TIME Project (This Is Me Entirely)

Bath time for birds
IT’S not just plants that thrive in gardens, birds love them – and they love them even more when there’s a birdbath to visit. Water helps keep a bird’s body cool both from the inside and outside. Offering water in your garden will attract more birds than just those looking for food, since birds that would not normally visit feeders can be tempted by water features Birds fly to birdbaths for the water they need -- for drinking and for grooming – and whilst they are there they will hunt for the insects, worms, seeds and flower parts they like to eat. In the process they will help aerate the soil, help tidy up dead plant material and help keep plants healthy as they devour pests. The best birdbaths are normally shallow with sloping sides, rather than deep pools of water. The shallow pitch lets smaller birds wade in, where they can stand up and clean their feathers instead of having to jump in.
Leave plenty of open space around the birdbath as well, so that birds can see any predators from far off. Also, place the birdbath near a perch of some sort, such as a small open tree or on a trellis or arbor. That lets birds scan the horizon from high up before swooping in to the bath. The simplest birdbath is a terracotta plant pot saucer with some small stones – and is very easy to make yourself. Just grab a large terracotta plant pot and saucer, some all-purpose glue for outside use and some rounded stones (about the size of a plum). Turn the pot upside down and scrub the base clean. Then apply a generous layer of waterproof glue to the base. Place the saucer on the base of the pot, settling it into the glue. Leave it for 24 hours to ensure that the glue dries thoroughly. Place the birdbath in a suitable spot, add some stones so birds can perch to drink and then add some fresh, clean water. The pebbles also provide an escape route for hon-
eybees that are frequent visitors to bird baths as they need water to regulate temperature within the colony on hot summer days. If pots and containers are just part of your outside space then here are some gardening tips for this month from the RHS (Royal Horticultural Society) …

SHEFFIELD’S Kyle Howarth admitted with Charles Wright they “got the job done” in a thrilling finale to the Championship Pairs. The Tigers duo beat Workington’s Ty Proctor and Nicolai Klindt in the final to retain the title at Somerset on Friday night. Howarth and Wright won their group with 22 points before beating pre-meeting favourites Lakeside in the semis while the
Workington pair went through with 20 points and outgunned Peterborough in their semifinal. Howarth said: “It’s a tough day, we knew it was going to be hard. We worked as a team and we were consistent all the way through the night. “We just chipped away with no last places and putting points on the board. When it came to the big heats we stepped our game up.
“Charles and I sussed out where we were riding all night and where we wanted to be. When it came to the semis and final we got the job done. “We kept calm and didn’t make drastic changes during the meeting.” Proctor won the final but Wright and Howarth packed into second and third keeping Klindt at bay to wrap up the title once again.

Joe Lumsden, Matt Reay and David Reay are among the players to have left with Aaron Moxam, Brad Beatson, Kane Swinburn, Kurtis Turner and Tyler Williams coming in. Hilton told Non-League Yorkshire: “I had a feeling we would lose the players we did do. We were disappointed to lose Joe, but these things happen. I wish everyone who has left all the best. “We’ve kept a good core of last season’s squad and recruitment has gone well. There was one other target we had, but we decided against it because the club he was with wanted some money for him and we weren’t prepared to pay. We’re not that type of club. “I’m pretty happy with what we have got and I’m still looking at a couple of other players.

“There’s no doom and gloom, but people have to realise that it is a little bit of a rebuild. It is not massive, but we have lost six players from last season.

“We have to bring six players and they have to be of the same quality, if not better for us to push on. But we have to give them time to gel and get them used to the way we play. “It can take a season to click, it could take a week or six months. It is now about how hard myself, Lee Thompson and Ryan Laight and Shaun Handisides work the lads in training to get them playing the way we want to do. “We’re at the start of that. The Nostell game really is the first one. The Sheffield United and Rotherham United games, let’s face it, you’re playing against professionals and you don’t get a lot of the ball. “We now need to progress against Parkgate, Penistone and then Worsbrough and show that we are progressing and getting better.” Stocksbridge lost 4-1 to a strong Rotherham side before drawing 1-1 with lower league opposition Nostell. Scott Ruthven was the scorer for Steels in both games. Steels travel to Penistone Church on July 26 and host a Sheffield Wednesday X! on Saturday August 4 at 3pm at Look Local Stadium.
