TWO BAILED AFTER MAN’S BODY FOUND

A 40-year-old man and a 76-yearold woman arrested in connection with the death of Gary Dean in Barnsley last week have been released on bail while enquiries continue. Detectives arrested the 40-year-old man on suspicion of murder, and the 76-year-old woman on suspicion of assisting an offender, at the weekend.

Mr Dean, 48 and from Silkstone Common, was found at around 5.40pm on Thursday September 6, with significant injuries in a wooded area behind Moorend Lane, close to the Trans Pennine Trail. A forensic post mortem examination has now been carried out, which

concluded that the cause of death was injuries resulting from a significant assault.

Detective Chief Inspector Steve Whittaker continues to appeal for information about Mr Dean’s movements on Thursday last week: “We know that when Mr Dean was last seen by loved ones on Thursday morning, he was wearing trainers and a bright red running top. I’m keen to hear from anyone who may have seen Mr Dean on Thursday. “The post mortem has revealed that Mr Dean was subjected to a violent and significant attack, so we need to hear from anyone who can help us piece together his movements that Thursday.

“Did you see him in the Trans Pennine Trail area, or in this woodland near Moorend Lane? Did you see him anywhere else on Thursday? “If you hold any information at all that could help us understand what happened to Mr Dean, please get in touch. “You can call police directly on 101, quoting incident number 628 of 6 September 2018. MTB champ Steve Peat to open Grenoside skate park

A STOCKSBRIDGE Town Councillor has had the idea of setting up a youth town council and is looking for potential councillors. THE determination of four young teenagers from Grenoside will be celebrated next week, at an official opening event on Saturday September 15, after their efforts to improve their local park has resulted in a brand new skate and scoot park for all the community. The new skate park, on Main Street, features a mini pump track, ramps, a sub box, rails and curved banks, and is suitable for all wheeled users such as balance bikes, scooters, skate boards, bmx bikes and roller blades.

At the opening event the new facilities will be tested out by Steve Peat, former Downhill MTB World Champion and creator of the Steel City Downhill race in Grenoside Woods. Peaty will be demonstrating his skills on bikes and boards, showing people of all ages and abilities how they can try out and improve their skills. He will also be joined by staff from ‘The House’ who will be providing a twohour skateboarding coaching session.

The park will be officially opened at 12.30pm, with a ribbon cutting by Deputy Lord Mayor, Cllr Tony Downing. Also attending will be Councillor Mary Lea, Cabinet Member for Culture, Parks and Leisure, plus local councillors and officers from Sheffield Parks and Countryside service. The Friends of Grenoside Park was established in 2012 after the four local lads identified and campaigned for vital improvements to be made to facilities in their local park.

The Friends group was supported by local councillors and staff at Sheffield City Council and raised money from local grants, fund raising events and donations to complete maintenance work, but more was needed to realise the young lads’ vision. Following a successful application, Sport England contributed £28,000 to make the boys’ skate park dream become a reality. The skate park is located on the old tennis courts opposite the bowling park and children’s play area.

Cllr Catherine Ward said: “Are you 13 to 17 years old and live locally to the area? If you want to have your say in your area and share what you are passionate about we’d be interested to hear from you. “We will be meeting once a month and in the evening with dates to be arranged. If you are interested contact Stocksbridge Town Council for an application form before October 2. Steel Valley Project celebrates 30 years with walk PEOPLE living and working around Stocksbridge are invited to join local countryside management charity, the Steel Valley Project, on a sponsored walk to celebrate their 30 year anniversary.

There are two options for anyone wanting to get involved - a 12-mile walk for those wanting to tackle an exciting challenge and a shorter six-mile route which still takes in local gems such as the historic village of Bolsterstone.

The event is being held on Saturday October 6 and will cover highlights in the area, such as Whitwell Moor, Wharncliffe Heath and Bolsterstone. It will include many of the project sites which the charity has worked on over the years and give the local community a real feel for the sort of work which they carry out.

The Steel Valley Project was founded in April 1988 through a partnership between the original Stocksbridge Steelworks (now Liberty Speciality Steels), Stocksbridge Town Council and the Countryside Commission and was hailed at the time as a ‘major industry improvement scheme’. The launch of the charity was marked in 1988 by a tree planting ceremony

involving local school children from around the district. In late 2017, as part of celebrations for 175 years of steelworks in the valley, a commemorative tree planting ceremony was held, bringing together a number of people from the original event. The last 30 years has seen the charity develop long term relationships with their partners and the landscape of the Stocksbridge valley change through a variety of different projects. The local community have played a major part in delivering these projects, through volunteering and support. The charity also plans to invite people to the event who

have played a role in the organisation’s long history. Tom Newman, Project Manager for the Steel Valley Project, said “We want to mark our 30th anniversary year with an event where local people can get involved and really celebrate the number of positive projects that the Steel Valley Project have undertaken over the years. The sponsored walk offers an exciting challenge and also showcases many of the sites which we have improved over our 30 year history.” Participants will receive a celebratory buffet meal on route and a commemorative gift on completion of the walk.

COUNCILLOR - "WHY I CHALLENGED MAGIC MAGID TO A BOXING MATCH” AN ECCLESFIELD Parish councillor has told Look Local why he challenged Lord Mayor of Sheffield Magid Magid to a charity boxing match. David Ogle, an independent member of the parish council, threw down the gauntlet during a light-hearted challenge at Sheffield City Council’s full meeting last week. Magid, who has gained national attention for his unorthodox approach to his duties, smiled as Cllr Ogle spoke and said that he would respond in private.

“The net cost to the taxpayer in setting up a community boxing gym is zero, compare that to the £1,000 cost of one police officer attending one home to take one statement following a crime.

Local community groups press on with plan to re-open St Matthias Church So far there has been a great deal of interest from local community groups. A further meeting at Stocksbridge Town Hall is to be held on Tuesday September 12 at 7pm to discuss the way forward following discussions with the Church of England Diocese of Sheffield and the Church Commissioners.

Cllr Ogle, a former Rifleman in the army, told Look Local: “I write this on Sunday and as of now I am in negotiations with our Lord Mayor, I am grateful he has not dismissed my request for help out of hand. A request made from one man to another in the spirit of sportsmanship and respect.

“Boxing gyms, community run, reduce crime and anti social behaviour and in doing so improve life quality for all within the community they exist, this is a proven fact, again easily checkable.

The walk will have way marking direction signs throughout and participants will get to experience a variety of terrain from riverside to moorland, with fabulous views over the Peak District and Upper Don Valley.

FOLLOWING a meeting of interested local community groups on August 15, the viability of a project to develop a community-focussed use of the recently closed-for-worship St Matthias Church, Manchester Road, Stocksbridge, is to be investigated further.

Mr Ogle has since revealed that he is now in negotiations with the Mayor regarding the bout and has explained his motives.

“Videos of how I asked for help are on my twitter and facebook pages, but should be easy to find on you tube or Sheffield Live with a quick Google search.

Sponsorship money raised will go towards helping to deliver future projects carried out by the Steel Valley Project to improve the local environment.

It would be greatly welcomed if other groups can attend this event.

“I asked Magic Magid, our Lord Mayor, for help because he has a media and personal following, because he is young and seems able to handle a few rounds with a guy who may not have youth on his side, but does have the skill in a ring earned from years of training. “Together we could inspire all age groups to get involved in setting up this community gym. Be that in simple goodwill, active attendance or simply vocal support. “To be honest I would be happy if this event, should it happen, simply stops those elected to represent us actively

blocking what could clearly be an amazing community asset. “Boxing saved me from taking the wrong path in life, I want to offer others that same chance. Do you? Plenty will sneer and moan, but do nothing. Too few will actively try to do good for goods sake, do not take the negative option. “You can contact our Lord Mayor via city council, or on social media, I ask you to do so, I have asked our Lord Mayor for help, I now ask you for help, let Magid know of your support in this event, be a part of doing good for good’s sake.”

Following this a report will be presented to Stocksbridge Town Council seeking support for the venture at their council meeting on Wednesday September 13 at 6.30pm. There is a high degree of synergy between groups who met back in August about the future of St Mathias. Artistic and Performance based groups such as Beacon Arts, Inyerface, the children's performance group, and Stocksbridge Music Festival lend can envisage the main auditorium of the Church being adapted as some kind of multi-use flexible performance space. Don Valley Railway and the Town Council see the outside area around the church being developed to create a high quality public realm linking Stocksbridge to Fox Valley and a future station. The undercroft of the Church, accessed at the rear, could provide units for small independent businesses to be developed. And, Stocksbridge Energy Group would wish that the roof create a solar farm to power the project. Any interested parties are asked to attend the meeting on September 12.

PUBLIC OPINION SOUGHT ON OUGHTIBRIDGE ACCIDENT BLACKSPOT FOLLOWING the return to schools last week there has been another accident in Oughtibridge at the junction by the bridge.

Professor Rosemary Varley, from University College London (UCL), will work with the organisation to establish further research into Conductive Education for both children and adults.

Local campaigner Terry Barrow is spearheading the survey and has had offers of help from other concerned residents willing to deliver the leaflet in order to gauge opinion as to the best way forward. She is concerned that although the council now accepts that this junction is an accident blackspot, and have agreed to do some remedial

work, timetables keep slipping and, because of that, more people are still being hurt. Following a long period of lobbying from the local community in Oughtibridge, Sheffield City Council have agreed to carry out some road safety improvements at the junction at the bottom of Bridge Hill and Orchard Street/Low Road. Consultation is proposed for November with construction expected around June 2019. One of several options being considered by the Council is a reversal of the one-way system on Bridge Hill. This would allow traffic coming down Station Lane to proceed straight across the junction at the foot of Orchard Street as well as turning right into Bridge Hill from Orchard Street. Traffic from Langsett Road South or Church Street wanting to

travel up Station Lane would have to go around the old White Hart and turn left. This is the only option the council has made the community aware of. Another option proposed from within the local Oughtibridge Community is to maintain the existing one-way system but physically alter the junction at the bottom of Bridge Hill to ensure that all traffic would turn right onto Low Road. This scheme would have the same effect on traffic travelling up Station Lane as above. Not only would this proposal have prevented every injury accident at the junction to date, it would have the added benefits of maintaining access for homes and businesses, preventing people from turning left into Forge Lane from Bridge Hill and stopping people racing down

Station Lane, up Bridge Hill and on to Church Street. Anne Phipps, speaking on behalf of the local Labour Party, emphasised the importance of gauging local opinion. She said: “Residents have previously expressed their concern to the Council by signing a petition with 700 names. We want to ensure the local community in and around Oughtibridge has a meaningful say in determining the best way of making this junction safer for all to use. Wortley sensory garden to open for the day THERE will be a creativity and mindfulness day at the nurturenature sensory garden at Station House in Wortley on Sunday September 23. Leave behind the busyness of daily life and set aside some time to refresh yourself through the creative pursuits of drawing and writing. Tune into what feels right for you and explore the benefits of mindfulness. Enjoy a playful approach to creativity through the qualities of patience, trust and openness. Overview Station House is a private house on Finkle Street, Wortley, where the garden is being developed as a healing garden available to the local community. The site is an acre or so in total and has plenty of spaces in the garden to sit and relax, draw, write and of course garden! Weather permitting we will use this lovely outdoor space for the day but there is indoor space in the conservatory which can be used if necessary.

During the day you can spend time discovering a new way of creating, through drawing and writing, using mindfulness as the foundation. All necessary materials such as paper, pencils, paint etc are provided. This event is suitable for anyone who wishes to explore mindfulness as a fresh approach to creativity, which can be expanded to all areas of life. Tuition will be provided in mindfulness as well as the craft skills of drawing and writing. The day will happily accommodate those who practice regularly as well as those new to drawing, writing or mindfulness. Beginners and the terrified are all welcome! The two tutors who will lead the day are both experienced practitioners. Dr. Lauri Bower has 30 years' experience of meditation practice and 15 years of running and organising retreats. She completed a Ph.D. on Mindfulness and Engaged Buddhism; the key teachings of Thich Nhat Hanh in 2014.

A payment system where you make a donation appropriate to your income is in operation as organisers aim to make the day available to anyone wishing to attend, regardless of income. ON Thursday September 27 at 2pm, there will be a talk in Stocksbridge Library as part of their 50th anniversary celebrations, sponsored by the Bolsterstone Archaeology and Heritage Group.

John Cruse will be telling us more about 'Beehive Hand Querns in the North of England'.

John is an expert on querns and is coordinator for the Yorkshire Quern Survey - a database of all querns in the North found in excavations, in museums, in field walls and in private collections, which now includes over 7,000 examples.

A quern is a simple hand mill for grinding corn into flour, typically consisting of two circular stones, the upper of

which is rotated on the lower one. They have been used since people started growing grain thousands of years ago.

The site was recognised and surveyed by Leslie Butcher in 1949 and is now scheduled to protect it.

We are fortunate here to live near Wharncliffe Crags (thought to be a corruption of 'quern cliff '), where the sandstone was the ideal material for the manufacture of quernstones in Iron Age and Roman times about 2,000 years ago.

Querns in a variety of styles, often broken, are frequently found in excavations; by studying them and the examples at the manufacturing site, we can understand better how they were made, used and disposed of by their owners.

The Bevan Community School.

This was our fifth annual event and it appears to be getting better every year. We have to particularly thank Ecclesfield Parish Council, the J.G. Graves Trust and the Sheffield Town Trust for their generous support which allowed us to provide free childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rides.

To fund these we have three fundraising events planned.

Considering the shortages at the time the dinners were quite good apart from the frogspawn pudding which we all hated. A range of schools will be taking part in the free Sheffield Music Hub supported-event Sheffield Makes Music close to the Peace Gardens from 1.30pm. Two from two for plucky Pigs STOCKSBRIDGE RUFC maintained their 100% record, defeating a committed but limited Sheffield Oaks side at a blustery Coal Pit Lane at the weekend. Eventually running out winners by 27-0 to secure second place in the league table on points difference. With former skipper Pete Newton injured and Matt Nesbitt unavailable, Stocksbridge welcomed back the mercurial Paul Kelly at centre, with Liam O’Leary switching to the back row to accompany returning club captain Ricky Rowett. Ben Westby, Ricky Christopherson and James Booth made for an experienced replacement bench.

Through a mixture of stout determined defence, some poor handing in the difficult conditions and over playing it in the pack, they were made to wait until 15 minutes in for scrum half Adam Frith to sneak through a gap and touch down for the first try, just too wide for Bowskill to convert. We nilled them too, showing a mean defence.”

Keenan will be well aware that Stocksbridge Rugby will need to improve on this performance to seriously achieve their goal of challenging for the league title this year.

FAR FROM A PIECE OF CAKE FOR STEELS Pontefract Collieries 2-0 Stocksbridge PS By Dave Rhodes With Steels looking for a second win of the campaign, manager Chris Hilton was forced to shuffle the pack with players injured or on holiday for the short trip to Pontefract. Consequently, the team was set up with a bit of an unbalanced feel to it as Stirrup came in at centre back. Weather conditions were dismal, dank and dreary as opposed to the warm sunshine experienced at Lincoln last week, but at least players would be happy to see a pitch with surface moisture where the ball could be zipped around to feet. The game started as an even contest with both teams creating half chances with nothing to trouble either goalkeeper really.

But the writing was on the wall as Steels pushed men forward carte blanche and were failing to react and identify danger early enough.

On 12 minutes Dugdale, the nippy left winger, was left one on one with Charlesworth, coming inside he threaded a ball neatly to Michael Dunn who latched onto it and chipped the ball over the advancing Greaves from 10 yards out.

Greaves needed to be alert on numerous occasions as Pontefract pressed forward, it must be said, with relative ease, no real resilience nor tenacity shown by the away side in critical areas of the pitch. Park steels did have a few ventures into the home sides half but free kicks, corners and through open play, were largely ineffective, apart from a chance in front of goal when Mangham should have hit the target, instead, firing well over.

A free header from McFadyen was off target from eight yards central to the goal and Moxam missed a glorious opportunity after terrific work down the left by Williams. Certainly Steels were making hard work of it, making elementary mistakes throughout the team against an average Pontefract side which was hard to fathom why. Easy passes were made far more difficult than they were, balls were not held and didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t stick in crucial areas of the pitch.

A scrappy affair ensued with Park steels all over the place at times becoming one dimensional and lacking ideas going forward, it seemed the harder they tried the worse it got. Three substitutions were made but made no difference as the Pontefract side managed the game out well.

It is hard to pick out any positives from an inept first half display where Park Steels failed to press up the pitch and work as defensive unit when the ball was lost.
