“THIEVING SCUMBAGS WILL NOT BREAK US” A LOCAL businessman says that the theft of 14 cars in one night has caused “personal devastation”. Thieves struck at Deepcar Motor Company in the early hours of Saturday morning, stealing the vehicles with an estimated total value in the region of £120,000. Owner Emil Berek, who has been trading at the location on Vaughton Hill for five years, says he believes that a large number of professional thieves were behind the raid. “They knew what they were doing,” Emil told Look Local. “They took all of the prestige cars and although some sounds of erratic driving were reported in Oughtibridge at around 4am, nobody locally heard anything. “I can’t believe it. They’ve smashed through the door, ransacked the office and safes looking for the keys to the cars and then made off. “The roller door on the front of the showroom is really noisy, I’m surprised that nobody heard it.” EMIL BEREK IN HIS NEARLY EMPTY SHOWROOM AT DEEPCAR MOTOR COMPANY

The showroom is fitted with CCTV, but it wasn’t working at the time of the theft.

Among the stolen vehicles were an Audi A1, a white Audi A5, a BMW 5-series, a white Citroen DS3, a blue Ford Kuga, a grey-silver Ford S-Max, a gold Jaguar XF, a bluesilver Range Rover Sport, a black Mercedes CLS, a black Mercedes E Class, a black Mercedes S Class, a cream Mini One and a black Seat Exeo. They also took another three sets of keys but left the cars behind. Before moving to the current location, Emil traded where McColl’s petrol station now stands. He’s been in the trade for 35 years and has never experienced multiple car thefts before. But Mr Berek remains defiant and told Look Local that it’s business as usual. “We still have some cars so we are still open. Within three to four days we will be restocked. Thieving scumbags will not break us.” Anyone with information should call South Yorkshire Police on 101 and quote incident number 318 of September 29.

Batty Saturday at Wharncliffe Heath BAT lovers are in for a treat this Saturday, October 6, with two events on the same day on Wharncliffe Heathlands Nature Reserve. In the morning, the bat boxes on the reserve will be checked for occupants and up to four species of the flying mammals are expected to be found. The event, run jointly by Wharncliffe Heathlands Trust and South Yorkshire Bat Group, commences at 10am and finishes around 2pm. Advance booking is required, as numbers are limited. Please email Robert Bell at robert.andrew. bell@gmail.com if you would like to attend. In the evening, from 6.45pm, bat detectors will be in action to survey the reserve’s bats as they fly in pursuit of food.

Let Robert know by the same email address if you wish to come so you can be informed if poor weather means the after dark walk is cancelled. Bring your own torch. Stout footwear is advised for both events. For both morning and evening events meet at the River Don bridge on Station Road, Deepcar (map reference SK 291 980/post code S36 2SQ). Wear stout footwear and bring warm clothes and some lunch. Under 19s are welcome but will need to be accompanied by an adult. FORTY-FOUR people have been arrested and 68 knives seized after a week of dedicated action to tackle knife crime across South Yorkshire, in support of the national Operation Sceptre. Operation Sceptre was launched on Tuesday September 18 by forces across the UK. The week of high-visibility, proactive policing activity saw significant seizures of dangerous weapons across South Yorkshire, as Detective Superintendent Una Jennings explains.

“Our officers and staff have worked incredibly hard during Operation Sceptre and thanks to their proactive approach, we have seized nearly 70 knives and removed them from the streets of South Yorkshire. “We carried out 63 test purchase operations in partnership with Trading Standards with retailers across South Yorkshire, many of whom passed the checks and refused to sell knives to under 18s.

Of those that failed, they have received warnings or the premises have taken positive action to ensure that this does not happen in future. “There were 20 weapons sweeps or land searches carried out across the force, with 25 knives being recovered from those searches alone. “The upsetting and tragic loss of another life as a result of knife crime in Sheffield last weekend, while Operation Sceptre was running, has undoubtedly affected our communities and has shaken many of us within the force. “This serious incident has only strengthened our resolve to continue with our proactive approach to tackling knife crime and progressing our long-term Knife Crime Strategy in partnership with local authorities, health and other agencies. As part of the week of action, there were around 75 engage-

ment events across the region, which included visits to local schools and presentations about the risks of knife crime, as well as pop up police stations and engagement stalls at community events. Det Supt Jennings added: “It is vitally important that we continue to work together to address the issue of knife crime and make our young people feel safer and, if they are considering carrying a knife, understand why that is and educate them away from this highly dangerous path. “I’m grateful for the support of our partner agencies, schools and the communities of South Yorkshire as we continue our efforts to tackle this devastating crime. If you hold any information about individuals involved in knife crime or have any concerns, please call police on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

THREE GENERATIONS FOR WINDOW COMPANY Call 0114 283 11 00

www.looklocal.org.uk

HISTORY

From humble beginnings, leaving school at I5 to start work as a tractor driver and general farm worker with wages of £20 per week back then in I975, I realised there must be more to life, so I went to work for the first double glazing company set up in the Sheffield area called Radiant Superglaze. After two years working there, learning all the skills, I decided to set up a business of my own, manufacturing double glazing in the old stables at The Coach and Horses pub in Stocksbridge. I soon moved into our existing premises on Manchester Road, Deepcar. The business quickly expanded through doing a good job, offering excellent customer service and value for money.

3 Generations: This year will be the 40th Anniversary

The company soon grew to a £2 million pound turnover that enabled me to buy my own factory and I won the Yorkshire Television Young Business Man ofthe Year Award back in I983. We are still going strong at our existing premises we bought in 1978, 40 years ago. We are a family run business, joined by my son ten years ago and hopefully his son will bejoining us in a few years time.

WHY ARE WE SO SUCCESSFUL?

I put that down to having old fashioned customer values, the customer is king at our firm, we stick to our old fashioned values, courtesy and customer service - we are customer friendly. Nothing is too much trouble for our customers. After all, it is the customer who pays our wages. When you contact us, you talk to a real person, not a computer, you don’t wait on the line trying to get through to a real person.

Latest products: Windows and doors

We are a forward looking company offering top quality ‘A’ Rated energy saving windows as standard. We are also introducing new products to satisfy our growing number of thousands of customers. 95% of our work is within a ten mile radius of Deepcar but we have travelled further on recommendation - as far as London, Liverpool, Scotland and even as far as the Isle of Man. We have thousands of satisfied customers. With our company, you get the old fashioned customer service with the most modern, up to date products. In fact, the Eurocell system we use is, without doubt, the best on the market. Ring now for a free quotation or call at our showroom to see the full range of products on display. We supply the best quality product fitted by our qualified installation engineers. We also have our own plasterer, brick layers and electrician, all qualified and professional.

WE SUPPLY THE BEST PRODUCT AT THE BEST POSSIBLE PRICES. By Ian Clancy

First Barnsley school to achieve ModeShift STARS Gold

TA N K E R SL E Y St Peters Primary school has become the very first Barnsley school to be accredited the Modeshift STARS Gold award. To celebrate this special achievement Tankersley St Peters’ is hosting a half a day event to share the good practice and positive lessons learnt by inviting other schools, teachers, heads, parents, and Mayor of Barnsley Cllr Steve Green. All pupils will be in non-uniform and are being encouraged to wear yellow and gold to celebrate the event, and decorations will be in place as a plaque will be presented in the school hall.

Modeshift STARS is the national awards scheme that recognises schools that have shown excellence in supporting cycling, walking and other forms of sustainable travel. Barnsley has been delivering Modeshift STARS for a few years now and it is only recently that the rest of our partners in South Yorkshire have joined the scheme. There are three levels of accreditation that schools can achieve which are Bronze, Silver and Gold.

Tankersley St Peters Primary was one of the very first schools to engage in this accreditation scheme. They were the very first school to

achieve the Silver Award and won Best School in Barnsley at the Modeshift STARS School Travel Awards which was held at Leeds City Hall. The school has grown from strength to strength, their hard work and commitment have paid off and now they are the very first school in Barnsley to achieve the Gold Award. Gold is the highest award a school can achieve where they have demonstrated a significant change in sustainable travel.

A spokesperson from Tankersley St Peters said: “We are very proud to announce, that we have been awarded the Gold Modeshift Stars award, for

Happiest Days of Your Life GRENOSIDE and Birley Carr players are heading back in time to just after the Second World War and to mayhem.

our hard work and dedication to improving road safety, at Tankersley. As a gold star school, we aim to showcase our achievements and support other schools, so they too can achieve their modal shift and achieve sustainable travel for life. “Cycling participation in the school has increased to 16.7% and scooting to 11.6% whereby last year’s figures were nil. Last year’s car use figures were 43.8% but currently stands at 16.7% which means there has been a massive decrease of 27.1% travelling by car, meaning pupils are now cycling/scooting to school travelling more sustainably.”

This year they are presenting The Happiest Days of Your Life by John Dighton. A classic comedy before the Belles of St. Trinians but just as chaotic. Imagine WW2 is over but on the playing fields of an exclusive and respectable boarding school, fresh storm clouds are gathering thanks to a Ministry of Education mix up. With trouble brewing in both classroom and staff room, boys take on girls in a riotous battle of the sexes that will make casualties of pupils, teachers and even parents. The Happiest Days of Your Life is at Grenoside Community Centre, Main Street, Grenoside, S35 8PR from Wednesday October 24 to Saturday October 27, starting at 7.30pm each day. Tickets are available on 0114 2460522 priced at £7 for adults and £5 for children. Director Stephen Andrews with some props.

Medal experts visit Sheffield and South Yorkshire to help raise money for local ex-service charities THE week commencing Monday October 8 could be a fantastic opportunity for residents of Sheffield and South Yorkshire to beat the credit crunch and cash in on their inherited and unwanted medals. As well as coins and all associated items or unwanted gold and silver items for this is the week that the team of experts from The Medal Centre will be running a week of specialist coin and medal valuation days in and around Sheffield and South Yorkshire with venues starting in High Green on Monday and then visiting the following locations during the rest of the week: Grenoside, central Sheffield, Hillsborough, Penistone and a final event in Silkstone Common on the Saturday. Each of the specialists present are experts in their own chosen field and they will be on hand to give free verbal valuations on any inherited medals and military items as well as coins and banknotes and most other small collectibles including scrap gold and broken jewellery in any form but particularly gold coins such as sovereigns and kruggerands or gold watches and watch chains. Please remember that any one of the experts will be happy to make you an immediate on the spot cash offer for your unwanted items and they will be happy to offer the very best prices available and most people are

delighted at the large amounts they are offered. This is because each of the valuers in attendance are members of respected trade organisations such as the Orders & Medals Research Society & the British Numismatic Trade Association. The Medal Centre have been asked to return to a number of local venues due to the huge response to the event held at this venue last time that they visited. One local resident was absolutely thrilled to accept a four figure sum for her small tin box containing her late uncle’s medals for bravery during WW1 along with his campaign medals for service in the Boer War and WW1 and a small selection of gold and silver coins along with a small amount of broken gold jewellery. The lady said that not only was she astounded to discover how much her items were worth but the money could not have come at a better time due to the current financial situation and on top of all that she was delighted to be able to help local exservicemen and women. There has never been a better time to sell your inherited collectable items as, due to The Medal Centre’s vast client base, they are able to offer the best possible prices and the Medal

Centre proprietor Mr Andrew Jukes was recently quoted as saying: “We are now able to pay exceptionally high prices for all medals from a single item to a complete collection.” Prices for this type of item are at an alltime high and people are often surprised how much some of the associated items such as cloth and metal badges or items of uniform, paperwork and photographs can enhance the value of a group of medals. Even items such as military paybooks

or old military photographs will always be of interest to a genuine collector.

presentation packs and stamp collections.

Mr Jukes also commented that at the moment good quality English and Scottish banknotes are in very high demand and he is paying very high prices for such items. He also made a point of saying how pleased he is that he now has a new in house expert on philately and stamps and he would now welcome the offer of mint condition British stamps including

It is also a good way to help your local community as The Medal Centre will be giving a donation to local ex-service charities for every item they are able to purchase on the day. However if you cannot attend on the day one of the experts from The Medal Centre will be happy to call and see you at your convenience and they can be contacted on 01434 609794 or 07950 421704.

Successive Labour, Coalition and Tory governments have overloaded the NHS with red tape and allowed it to be abused as an international, rather than a National Health Service.

Between 1997 and 2010, Tony Blair and Gordon Brown contracted private syndicates of hedge fund managers, bankers and big property developers to design, build and finance new hospitals and run non-clinical services. These syndicates charged interest rates so high, you might as well have called the scheme, “buy one hospital, pay for sevenâ€?. Private Finance Initiative (PFI) deals financed ÂŁ11.8 billion worth of new build but will ultimately cost the NHS ÂŁ79 billion, 75%of the syndicates involved are based offshore, so they don’t even pay UK taxes on these enormous profits, Politicians have allowed the wealthiest in our society to laugh all the way to the bank at the expense of the NHS. We must end the use of PFI contracts in the National Health Services. We now have the scandal of ghost patients, they don’t exist but the NHS pays ÂŁ151 for each of them, over ÂŁ3.6 million. Capita were brought in to solve this problem, they were paid millions, but the ghost patients increased by 600 thousand. With multinational corporations of this calibre helping the NHS, there is no wonder it is in crisis. The problems caused by our disconnected health and social care system will not be resolved unless the two are fully integrated. Perhaps it is time to establish a Royal Commission to find a way forward that allows the NHS to hold fast to its values while meeting the challenges of the future. The welfare of the people and the caring for the sick should be the supreme law in this country.

Asda’s carpark managers use NPR and this picked up the two visits calculated we’d been there 19 hours and fined us £70.

My wife was quite shocked and distressed as it was addressed to her. I wonder if anybody else has been fined in a similar manner. We’ve stopped shopping there and are dealing with the issue. It’s a concern if more vulnerable people receive such a demand Regards, Dave Wardle

THE CITY HORROR FESTIVAL PUTTING THE SCREAMS IN HALLOWEEN NOTHING gets you in the Halloween spirit like a good scary film. But here in Sheffield, we are truly spoilt.

Founded in 2009, the festival has become a destination for horror fans seeking the very best the horror genre has to offer.

The city is host to Celluloid Screams, a diverse four-day horror bonanza which showcases films to make your hair stand on end from around the globe.

Celluloid Screams has premiered films such high-profile films as Paranormal Activity, The Witch, The Void, The Autopsy of Jane Doe, Goodnight Mommy, The Editor, Creep 2, The Revenant, Raw and The Endless, to name but a few, and has an ongoing commitment to emerging genre talent. Celluloid Screams has become one of the highlights of the UK Festival Calendar.

But this year marks the 10th edition of the annual festival and organiser Rob Nevitt and his dedicated team have pulled out all the stops to offer a four-day festival of the shocking and macabre. The festival runs from Thursday October 18 to Sunday October 21, filling the big screen with screams at the Showroom Cinema in the city centre. It opens with the hotly-anticipated Nic Cage flick, Mandy, and then moves on to a midnight screening of the brand new Halloween film with Michael Myers on the prowl once again! As well as boasting a full programme of classic and contemporary horror, there are also short films, DJs and special guests appearing throughout.

Celluloid Screams offers a number of awards each year, including an audience award for Best Feature Film (won in 2017 by Patrick Brice's 'Creep 2'') as well as short film awards, which are decided by a jury of industry professionals. Weekend passes for the popular event have sold out but there are still tickets available for individual screenings and events. For more details, visit www.celluloidscreams.co.uk/or look them up on Facebook and Twitter.

HELP OUT WITH LUNCH ON CHRISTMAS DAY SOME of the volunteers, and the coordinator, at The Meeting Place at Christ Church, are planning a Christmas Day lunch for local people in the valley who would be alone on Christmas Day.

There is already such an event in town for older people, so this event is aimed particularly at people under 65, but there will be all ages there, perhaps even one or two children if there are single parents alone in town on that day. It will be on Christmas Day. It will be a full turkey dinner (with vegetarian option) and they are trying to make it a shared family-type day, where every-

one joins in; not a silver service dinner where there are volunteers and diners. They expect to cater for about 60, including volunteers.

But before they get to that stage, they need to know that they have enough volunteers to make it work.

The event been generously supported by the Mayor’s Fund, the Churches Together Lent Lunches and they are expecting another grant from a local charity. All the people who come will also pay a charge, so that they know they are a part of the event.

They will need some people to help prepare things on Christmas Eve, the Monday. On Christmas Day itself, Tuesday, they will need three people in the kitchen who feel comfortable cooking for 60 people, some washers up, more on reception, some helping to facilitate.

They are also hoping to be supported by donations in kind from some of the local businesses in the town, who will see this as a new enterprise for the whole town.

And because they will have access to two minibuses, they will need two drivers and two escorts. It may be that some will only be able to do half the day. That would work, if they know.

So the organisers are now asking if there are few people in the Valley who could help, especially on Christmas Day itself. Some may be people who would otherwise themselves be on their own on the day and would welcome the opportunity to do something to help others. They already have some volunteers, but they need more. The group will be working through October and November with local organisations to help invite people who would like to come. Rev Ian Lucraft, the minister at Christ Church said: “I am deeply touched by the idea that people will give up their

time on Christmas Day to do this. It feels like a really appropriate thing to be doing on Christmas Day. “Lots of us will think it would be good to do this, but it takes a big push to make it happen. This will be a significant addition to the community activities and support in the Valley if we can make a good go of it. Please think if you could help.” If you are interested, please contact Sarah Knightley on SCCoordinator@ outlook.com or call 0114 288 7899.

HAVE YOUR SAY ON SUPERTRAM FUTURE

RESIDENTS, visitors, community groups and businesses across the Sheffield City Region are being asked to have their say on the future of Supertram. A public consultation runs from September 24 to November 5 and will seek views on three options for the system: * Maintaining Supertram as it is through ongoing essential repairs. * Renewing and modernising Supertram’s tracks, vehicles and information systems. * Exploring alternative options to Supertram.

Around £230m of investment is needed to allow Supertram to operate beyond 2024. Feedback from the consultation will form part of the business case that will be submitted to the Department for Transport to support the funding of any renewal works. As part of this business case all possible options need to be explored, and consulted on and then a preferred option for the system needs to be submitted. Mayor of the Sheffield City Region, Dan Jarvis, said: “For more than 20 years the Supertram has been a fixture within Sheffield and the region and has been making

more than 12 million passenger journeys a year. “We are now working with South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive to establish what the future of the Supertram system might look like. We want to hear from those people who currently use the Supertram, and those who don’t, about what its future should be. I would encourage as many people as possible to have their say.” For more information about the proposals on the future of Supertram and to take part visit: travelsouthyorkshire.com/futuretram

Cannon Hall’s lakes transformed to former Georgian glory OVER the last year, Barnsley Museums have worked with contractor, Ebsford Environmental to carefully desilt the parks historical lakes, transforming them back to their Georgian splendour. Alongside the visual improvements, work was undertaken to improve the water quality to encourage more aquatic habitats and increase local biodiversity. Low impact machinery and in water technology was used to remove the build-up of silt from the watercourse. The project resulted in zero landfill. Over 17300m3 of slit was removed and used to restore the banks, improve the grassland and nourish the soil. The transformation involved the whole community and over 300 volunteer

hours were undertaken. Visitors, local job seekers, community groups and Barnsley Council employees helped to erect fencing and plant the new banks. Volunteers will also help to monitor and maintain the transformed landscape. Now completed the lakes have seen an improvement in water quality and local biodiversity. They will also play a crucial role in helping to reduce the risk of future flooding. The water restoration is just part of the wider £3 million renovation Parks for People project, which has been made possible by the generous support of the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Big Lottery Fund. During the next two years, key features of the parkland including

buildings and pathways will be restored to their former glory. Visitors to the top Yorkshire attraction will see work being conducted in the grounds at various stages of the project; however, the hall, park and gardens will remain open throughout the work. The team at Cannon Hall who can regularly be found in the park and gardens welcome any questions about the project and the many volunteering opportunities and events scheduled for the coming months. Cllr Roy Miller, Cabinet Spokesperson for Place, said: “Visitors are now able to take in the serene beauty of these once forgotten lakes and appreciate the original Georgian vision and vistas which have been brought back to life.

We’re excited to see the project well and truly underway and hope the incredible transformation will place Cannon Hall Park and Gardens firmly on the tourist map.” Nick Hartley, Managing Director Ebsford Environmental said: “It has been a pleasure to be involved in the restoration of the Cannon Hall lakes. “Over the past few months, Ebsford has reshaped and restored the formerly eroding banks while improving water quality and in turn the habitats for local biodiversity. 20,000 plants and 300 volunteer hours later we are proud to say we have completed this scheme with minimal impact on the environment, visitors and the wider community.

“This is one of the largest and potentially most complex projects Ebsford have ever undertaken locally. I think it is an incredible achievement and congratulations to all those involved in what has been an immensely satisfying process to restore such a treasured attraction. “We will be monitoring conditions of the lakes over the coming months to assess the benefit of these enhancements on the wildlife. We look forward to watching the plants establish, and the site transform further into the spring.” For more information about the project and the activities happening at Cannon Hall visit www.cannon-hall.com.

Students present Fragments of War HILLSBOROUGH drama degree students are presenting ‘Fragments of War’ at three contrasting venues in November in a performance to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of the ending of ‘the war to end all wars’. Originally researched and presented by Sheffield Popular Arts in 2008, Fragments of War is an emotive piece of devised theatre which includes songs, poems and stories reflecting the tremendous impact of the war on the lives of South Yorkshire and

Derbyshire residents between 1914 and 1918. This includes the soldiers who went to fight, the families they left behind and the men who stayed at home. The fragments, based on recollections, letters and memories, give an insight into the reactions of the people directly involved. It is an absorbing and informative consideration of the momentous times, in turn humorous or deeply moving.

Fragments of War will be performed at The Sheffield College (Hillsborough Campus) on Livesey Street on November 8, Kelham Island Museum on November 15 and at St Marys Church, Walkley on November 16. For each ticket sold the company will make a contribution to the British Red Cross to recognise their efforts during the war. For enquires or to book your tickets contact: fragmentsofwar2018@gmail. com or visit: The Sheffield Collage, Livesey St, Sheffield S6 2ET.

FOOTBALL ROUND-UP

Mayne recorded a time of 1h 53m 53s which placed him third in the 55 - 59 year old group while Heggie’s time of 2h 13m 35s placed him second in the 65 – 69 year old group. Their times were good enough to set new club records for the distance at 55 and 65 years old respectively. Also on Saturday Wheelers John Woodhouse and Steve Myatt rode the 103km Beast of Bolsover Audax climbing over 5,000 feet on the route. Both finished well within the allotted time.

ON Saturday, Penistone Church hosted Hemsworth Miners’ Welfare in the Toolstation NCEL Premier Division and ran out 5-2 winners. A Sam Scrivens brace, alsong with goals from Tom Brennan, Ash Ellis and Conor Glavin did the job for Church with Seon Ripley and Richard Collier on target for the visitors.

Birdwell Wheelers club run on Sunday saw Chris Jenkins, Dave Hudson, Tony Lodge, Steve Myatt, Philip Stewart Adams, Robert Parkes and two guest riders ride out to spectate the Stocksbridge Hill Climb up Pea Royd Lane then on to the Windmill Coffee Shop at Royd Moor.

OUGHTIBRIDGE WMFC went top of the Blades Super Draw Premier League with an outstanding win away in the local derby against rivals Chapeltown. After a fairly even opening the visitors soon began to take control, first Wilson Coupe went close and then Ross Brown shot wide.

This Sunday’s club run leaves Brewers Fayre roundabout at Wombwell at 9:15 and heads out on a 65 mile route to spectate at the annual Monsal Hill Climb. Visitors are welcome.

It was no surprise when the deadlock was broken midway through the first half, Brown finishing off a fantastic counter attack. The War Memorial should have extended their lead but missed several good chances to go in to the break with just the one goal lead, in the second half it was all Oughtibridge but a rare Chapeltown chance was stopped when Keiran Osbourne pulled off a fantastic stop to deny the home side an equaliser.

Trevor Mayne at the National 50 2018 © B_Hall Photography

The visitors kept creating chances with the Olly Black, Brown and Booth all having the chance to extend the lead further. Chapeltown did pull one back but with 10 minutes left, Ross Brown completing his brace to put the bridge to the top of the table going in to the two week cup fixtures. On Sunday October 7 Woodhouse Junction visit the War Memorial in the second round of the League Cup, on the 14th Intake Old Boys visit in the Sheffield and Hallamshire Sunday Cup - both 11am kick offs. HIGH Green Villa played their second local derby of the week away at The Look Local Stadium as they faced a Stocksbridge Park Steels development side, losing 1-0. Both teams missed early chances in a scrappy affair. Townsend had two good opportunities to open the scoring for Park Steels when clear through on goal only to be denied by Parker in the Villa goal who again was outstanding.

AFTER the heavy rains of last Thursday, the long awaited Youth Cup fixture between Stocksbridge Park Steels under 18s and Nostell MW took place with Stocksbridge U18 Manager Paul Staniland and his staff looking to progress into the second qualifying round stages. It was a resounding success for Steels after a nervy start, running out 5-2 victors.

More details on this and all the above can be found on the club’s website: http://www.birdwellwheelerscyclingclub.co.uk

Plenty of success for footpath runners at Penistone Hill race

It was no surprise when the lead was extended - first Tom Galloway headed in from the outstanding Chas Tunnard’s cross and then Danny Booth chipped in with a great solo goal.

A draw and a defeat for Steels

By: Dave Rhodes AFTER a crushing 5-1 defeat at Loughborough Dynamo last weekend, Steels manager Chris Hilton was looking to overturn things and gather a little pride and confidence back to his squad. That was achieved of a fashion with a well-earned 1-1 draw away to Tadcaster but this was followed by a 1-0 defeat to Brighouse on Monday. Tadcaster Albion provided the opposition at the Ings stadium as Steels were back on the road again. In terms of league positions there was nothing really between the two teams and so it proved on the pitch too as the first half an hour passed

without the goalkeepers having much to deal with overall. But on 32 minutes a left wing corner was swung in far post for the home side, unmarked, the Tadcaster central defender headed the ball back towards goal only for McFadyen to mistime his headed clearance with the ball looping off the back of his head and over the helpless Jordan Amissah into the net. Steels rallied well with good inter changing play but just couldn’t find the creativity required to break down a well organised Tadcaster outfit. Tadcaster came out of the traps quickly and immediately put the away side under pressure with long diagonal balls but Steels held firm and dealt with them admirably. Steels

earned a sequence of corners as the game became end to end but nothing came of them. Mangham was busy up top and earned a free kick on 60 minutes after he was brought down just outside the box on the left. Ruthven claimed the ball, set himself and struck a fierce right footed drive that deflected off the wall and into the net with the home goalkeeper left flat footed as he went the wrong way, expecting the ball to drop to his right. 1- 1 and Steels were deservedly back in the game. Then, five minutes later a glorious long range strike from Coleman hit the bar. But Tadcaster were a good footballing side and were always a threat with clever approach play across all areas of the final third as they pressed intelligently forward.

Unfortunately Steels were reduced to ten men when Williams was given a straight red card for a late tackle which led to an immense rear guard effort for the last 15 minutes.

Local Sport

Steels back line superbly marshalled by McFadyen and Charlesworth dealt with everything thrown at them. A few close calls and an offside goal but overall Steels were magnificent to a man as they showed terrific courage, team spirit and attitude to hold onto the point. Against Brighouse, Steels were undone by the one goal and will look to be getting back on track at home to Belper. The next home fixture is Belper Town on Saturday October 6 with a 3pm kick off.

Hawks squeezed out in season finale

Motors

ERNEST THORPE Halifax Road, Thurgoland 0114 2882152

MOT’s £35.00 NO BOOKING REQUIRED

Oulton Raiders 20-14 Sheffield Hawks AFTER an eight week lay-off, Hawks season concluded in a tense match in Leeds. For the neutral this was an intriguing match that had a little bit of everything that makes Rugby League such an enthralling sport to watch. Hawks said goodbye to two outstanding players in Josh Bilton and Corey Hall and hope were high. Frankly, in the first half, hawks were totally outplayed. Oulton were intensity personified and took the game (and the offside laws) to the limit.

They hit hard, took every chance and scored four tries in the first half to take an impressive, if slightly flattering, 20-0 lead. Hawks were rusty, off the pace and struggling to complete a set. Yet in the second half, Hawks raised their game beyond measure. The tackles didn’t miss, the pace was quicker and the tempo was improved. Three tries were scored as Hawks dominated possession and Oulton ran out of energy, ideas and luck.

Harry Edgar scored from 50 metres out, seeing a gap, exploiting it and, with characteristic strength, scoring despite the efforts of most of the Oulton backs. Harry Edgar never scores a boring try. The next score was the culmination of an 80metre set of six that saw Callan Drewery touch down from close range. Again, the Hawks seemed to be driving forward and scoring despite everything Oul-

ton tried to do, offside or otherwise. When Bailey Thompson scored, on a fifth tackle Crossfield kick after Oulton had been penned in their own 10 metre line for two consecutive sets the match was there for Hawks. A solid Spencer Poppleton conversion and the kick off was immediately returned to the Raiders half. Joe Littlewood scored, but the try was disal-

lowed for a double movement. Both Joseph Tipping and Reuben Kateregga made it over the Oulton line but could not touch down. The Raiders held on, by their fingernails, to win the match after a second half comeback that was the best way to remember the match for Hawks, and indeed their season, - on the front foot and taking the game to the opposition.

Stocksbridge beaten by table toppers STOCKSBRIDGE RUFC 5-59 Ossett

A BEAUTIFUL late Summer’s afternoon, with a sizeable and expectant crowd welcomed in form Ossett Rugby to Coal Pit Lane for a top of the table showdown between the two undefeated teams in Division Four (S&W).

nity which they gratefully accepted to double their advantage. Smith, Newton and Keenan himself were introduced early from the bench as the home side looked to gain some momentum up front and whilst rarely threatening in attack, it made things a little more difficult for the free scoring Ossett side.

Ultimately it was Stocksbridge who gave up their 100% record, producing easily their worst performance for a long time, crashing to a heavy 59-5pts defeat and having to settle for second place in the league ladder.

More loose possession and further weak tackling allowed the visitors to score two further quick tries, to gain a try bonus point and put the game beyond the home side well before the half time break.

With veteran back rower David Dowkes earning a call up and the versatile Ben Westby replacing the suspended Liam O’Leary in the centre, Stocksbridge were again able to select from strength as an interchange bench of Booth, Keenan, Joe Smith, the returning Pete Newton and evergreen Ricky Christopherson would show.

With the Stocksbridge kickers being unable to tame the gusting wind, Ossett enjoyed more possession and territory to score a fifth try, although hard working skipper Rowett pulled a consolation try back for Stocksbridge on the stroke of half time, Bowskill was unable to convert to leave the half time score of 33-5 to Ossett.

Bradfield Brewery sponsored Stocksbridge Rugby began well with a series of attacks lead by scrum half Adam Frith, with club Captain Rowett leading the way, well supported by Reese Aspin.

The coaching team tried to rally the troops at half time, but the writing was well and truly on the wall. Stocksbridge suffered a body blow early in the second stanza when towering lock forward Sam Whitaker suffered a knee injury and was taken to hospital with suspected ligament damage.

However these early raids didn’t yield any score and almost from their first attack, the visitors broke through some feeble midfield defence to open their account with a converted try. It was a sign of things to come as Stocksbridge struggled to keep hold of the ball against an enthusiastic visiting defence.

Stocksbridge did have small periods of possession, but all too often and all too easily they were turned over, by their eager opponents who sensed the kill and offered no respite to the home side.

A turnover on half way provided Ossett another try scoring opportu-

With their full back running rampant, Ossett scored a converted try

again on 55 minutes. They only had to wait another 10 minutes to register their seventh try of the afternoon as the home side began to run out of any fight. Hard working back rower Reece Aspin also suffered an injury and will be doubtful for next week’s cup fixture, as Stocksbridge eventually ran out of fit bodies, enabling the visitors to register two further scores to take the spoils by 59-5 and claim their top spot in the league ladder. “A bad day at the office, was how head coach Rhys Keenan viewed the mauling. He continued, “There weren’t many positives, but it might give us the kick up the backside we need. Ricky Rowett was the best of a bad bunch as he toiled in vain to take the man of the match award, Ryan Smith and scrum half Frith were amongst few others to shine. Stocksbridge Rugby must now lick their wounds and patch their bodies up in preparation for this week’s Yorkshire Vase Cup clash with Harrogate Pythons, kick off at Coal Pit Lane is 3pm &and all are welcome. “There’s no need to panic, said Andy Tyers afterwards. “We’re still a healthy three and one in the league. We have an opportunity against a higher class of opponent this week to get back on the horse and right a few wrongs. “I guess the playing group need to show us all what they’re really made of and turn up for each other this week.
