ARCHITECT APPOINTED FOR LEISURE CENTRE PROJECT Architecture identified opportunities for the hub to offer a wide range of health, sport and leisure activities. As the next step, the team at TP Bennett LLP will consider options for developing all aspects of the centre to make the facility fully accessible to visitors and staff members alike. This will include the creation of an accessible shower and changing facility, extension of the existing fitness gym and creating a new ground floor wheelchair friendly accessible gym. A new and improved main entrance, reception and social café will complete this phase of the transformation and pave the way for further phases linking the Centre to outdoor facilities in the nearby Oxley Park. Stocksbridge Community Leisure Centre receive a boost from The Dransfield Foundation AN architect has been appointed for the next stage of a major Stocksbridge Community Leisure Centre project. Making the Stocksbridge Community Leisure Centre (SCLC) more accessible to local people is the exciting challenge that’s been given to architects TP Bennett LLP by the Well Sheffield team.
Well Sheffield is a community project based in Stocksbridge which is working alongside local people to help them improve their health and wellbeing. It is supporting the development of a ‘health hub’ at the community managed Leisure Centre and the neighbouring Oxley Park. Initial work by post graduate architectural students from the Sheffield University, Department of
leisure centre, this project is very close to my heart. “As a significant part of the sports, social, recreational and educational side of the valley, I would personally like nothing more than to see the Centre flourish and exceed expectations that the community has for the facility and surrounding areas.” Andy Clarke, Well Sheffield Programme Manager and Chief Executive Officer of 4SLC, the Community Trust operating the Centre, added: “Upgrading the quality of our facilities as well as unlocking access into and around the Centre is key if we are to attract more people to use it.
A total of £16,227.75 has been donated to the charity with a similar amount also being awarded to the team’s other chosen charity, Action Against Cancer. Fay Howard from Stocksbridge Community Leisure Centre said: “This is a fantastic donation from the Dransfield Foundation which will make a great contribution towards our project and we can’t thank Mark and the team who take on this amazing cycling challenge enough.”
“These improvements will create many new business opportunities and help establish the Centre as a key community health hub.”
Mark Dransfield said: “We are delighted and very proud to be able to make this contribution to our local community here in Stocksbridge.

Life-saving NHS screening appointments available THE Venue in Stocksbridge will be hosting an Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) screening clinic for men aged 65 and above on Thursday November 22. An AAA is a swelling of the main blood vessel in the body, the aorta, which can weaken and expand. There are no symptoms and if left untreated the swelling can lead to a rupture and a risk of death from internal bleeding. Clinicians are urging local men to get in touch and make an appointment for the quick, easy and painless five minute ultrasound scan. Babatunde Fakolade, AAA Screening Programme Coordinator for South Yorkshire and
Bassetlaw, said: “In England and Wales there are approximately 3,000 deaths each year in men aged 65 and over from AAAs. As there are no signs and symptoms of the illness, it’s crucial that those of this age take advantage of this potentially lifesaving scan.
“The test is a very simple check of the abdomen which takes just a few minutes and is completely painless and non-invasive. Results are given straight away, meaning you can pop in, be seen and enjoy the rest of your day.” Men in their 65th year are invited for AAA screening by letter, but men over 65 who have not previously been screened can make an appointment by contacting the South Yorkshire and
Bassetlaw AAA Screening Programme on 01709 649100. Gina Bastiani, organiser of the event, said: “I want to encourage all men local to Stocksbridge, Deepcar and other surrounding areas to book an appointment for this clinic. It’s just another way that you can give yourself a bit of an MOT and ensure you’re in good health.” The clinic will take place on Thursday November 22 at The Venue, 650 Manchester Rd, Stocksbridge, Sheffield S36 1AJ. Please note, appointments must be booked beforehand. For more information on AAAs, visit the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw website at: http://aaa.dbh.nhs. uk/

THREE GENERATIONS FOR WINDOW COMPANY Call 0114 283 11 00

HISTORY
From humble beginnings, leaving school at I5 to start work as a tractor driver and general farm worker with wages of £20 per week back then in I975, I realised there must be more to life, so I went to work for the first double glazing company set up in the Sheffield area called Radiant Superglaze. After two years working there, learning all the skills, I decided to set up a business of my own, manufacturing double glazing in the old stables at The Coach and Horses pub in Stocksbridge. I soon moved into our existing premises on Manchester Road, Deepcar. The business quickly expanded through doing a good job, offering excellent customer service and value for money.
3 Generations: This year will be the 40th Anniversary
The company soon grew to a £2 million pound turnover that enabled me to buy my own factory and I won the Yorkshire Television Young Business Man ofthe Year Award back in I983. We are still going strong at our existing premises we bought in 1978, 40 years ago. We are a family run business, joined by my son ten years ago and hopefully his son will bejoining us in a few years time.
WHY ARE WE SO SUCCESSFUL?
I put that down to having old fashioned customer values, the customer is king at our firm, we stick to our old fashioned values, courtesy and customer service - we are customer friendly. Nothing is too much trouble for our customers. After all, it is the customer who pays our wages. When you contact us, you talk to a real person, not a computer, you don’t wait on the line trying to get through to a real person.
Latest products: Windows and doors
We are a forward looking company offering top quality ‘A’ Rated energy saving windows as standard. We are also introducing new products to satisfy our growing number of thousands of customers. 95% of our work is within a ten mile radius of Deepcar but we have travelled further on recommendation - as far as London, Liverpool, Scotland and even as far as the Isle of Man. We have thousands of satisfied customers. With our company, you get the old fashioned customer service with the most modern, up to date products. In fact, the Eurocell system we use is, without doubt, the best on the market. Ring now for a free quotation or call at our showroom to see the full range of products on display. Climber speaks out against fracking on return to Wharncliffe Crags PROFESSIONAL Sheffield climber Pete Whittaker has voiced his concerns about fracking after a recent visit to Wharncliffe Crags.
around the world. Pete famously all-free rope soloed Yosemite’s El Capitan in less than 24 hours – the previous fastest time being four days.
Pete, backed by Patagonia and Friends of the Earth said in n interview: “What I love most about climbing is the challenge of it physically and mentally.
On the crags he said: “Where we are right now is Wharncliffe Crag which is just outside Sheffield – these crags are protected from drilling.
“Also the freedom of being able to get outdoors, kind of shut your mind off and just purely focus on that one activity.
“But just 200 metres away to the east and west of here the land is actually licensed for exploratory drilling that could lead to fracking.”
“Anyone who loves the English countryside should be concerned about fracking.” The rock climber doesn’t mince his words and spoke out on the importance of nature and outdoor spaces – and the need to protect them from fracking. “I’ve climbed in lots of stunning settings around the world. But climbing in the English countryside will always be special to me,” he added. Whittaker is a record-breaking rock climber who has grown up in the Peak District – scaling the environment for 20 years. He is an ambassador for Patagonia and has climbed routes
Fracking is a way of extracting gas or oil that is trapped inside rocks. Over 17,000 square kilometres of England is covered by oil and gas exploration licences. These licences put large parts of the countryside at risk of industrialisation – including countless areas enjoyed by climbers, walkers, mountain bikers and more. “It seems we’re taking one step backwards going down this path. And I think we should stand up for our environment. Join the fight against fracking,” he concludes.

Deepcar author's four titles available in library DEEPCAR author Mark J Foster currently has four of his books on display at Stocksbridge Library to coincide with the recent 50th anniversary celebration of the library opening in 1968. Although Mark has spent the past 25 years living in Deepcar, his formative years were spent living in the Heeley/Arbourthorne area of the city, where his passion for creative writing was cemented. As a lifetime resident of the city, Mark would highlight 'local experience' as his key attribute toward his writing, as his four books to date all carry a Sheffield theme within their content. 'Youse from Over the Water' Is the story of three Sheffield bricklayers who travel over to Northern Ireland to seek work at the height of the ‘Troubles’ during the mid -1980s, and

'Up at the Sky Edge 1917' is the story of a young Sam Garvin leaving behind the carnage of the World War 1 battlefields, and of his return to Sheffield. The ongoing struggle for the control of the illegal gambling operation at Sky Edge, which would descend into the brutal ‘Sheffield Gang Wars’ of the 1920s. 'District' is an episode of post-traumatic stress and sees Sean to seek solitude away from society, living in the tunnels and the labyrinth of the London Underground network. Hillsborough grandmother in bid to raise awareness of rare disease A HILLSBOROUGH grandmother living with a rare heart and lung disease is backing a national awareness week to help people understand the condition. Pam Ellis, 62, was diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension (PH) three years ago. The serious disease, which affects just 7000 people in the UK, causes high pressure in the blood vessels connecting the heart and lungs. PH Awareness Week 2018 takes place from October 2229 and has been organised by Sheffield-based charity the Pulmonary Hypertension Association (PHA UK), who work nationally to support those affected by the lifeshortening condition. Pam, who has three grandchildren, said: “Having PH affects me in all sorts of ways physically. I get breathless just trying to get dressed and even making a cup of tea or washing the pots can be difficult, which are all things that most people take for granted. It also affects me mentally and emotionally all of the time. I’ve lost a lot of confidence. “PH is an invisible illness and people don’t see the struggle that goes on inside. Having pulmonary hypertension is frustrating, debilitating and
Falling for it: the Peak District National Park in autumn MAKE the most of nature’s spectacular colours in the Peak District National Park this autumn. The season’s cooler temperatures are perfect for cycling and walking, making autumn a great time to explore the UK’s original National Park. Family friendly two and threewheeled adventures on trafficfree trails are a great way to discover the National Park at this less busy time of year. Helen Bower, visitor operations manager for the Peak District National Park Authority, said: “It doesn’t matter if you’ve not ridden a bicycle for years, or how old you are, or how fit you are, we’ve got tandems, trikes, powered bikes, wheelchair bikes, hand crank bikes – there really is something for everyone whatever your age or ability.” Choose from a great range of bikes for all ages and abilities from cycle hire centres at Parsley Hay, Derwent or Ashbourne. Full details at www.peakdistrict. gov.uk/visiting/cycle. Helen added: “My top tip for this time of year is to visit Parsley Hay, near Hartington, which gives access to the Tissington and High Peak trails. We’re open
every day so pick a sunny day and you’ll find there’s no finer place to ride and experience the wide open views of the White Peak landscape.” Parsley Hay, Derwent and Ashbourne cycle hire centres are open every day, including during the October half term holidays. Check the website for winter opening times www.peakdistrict.gov.uk/visiting/cycle. Peak District National Park ranger-guided walks showcase the very best of the National Park at this time of year. • Explore the Enchanted Forest (Sunday October 28) on a walk from Danebridge and discover a wealth of spooky tales, myths and legends amongst the trees and rocks. • Experience the Ashford Autumn Adventure (Sunday November 4) with a 6.5-mile walk around the village of Ashfordin-the-Water, Monsal Head and Monsal Dale. • Scale the heights of the Peak District ‘Matterhorn’ – Shutlingsloe – one of the highest peaks (Saturday November 24) on a 6-mile walk and enjoy panoramic views over the Macclesfield Forest and Cheshire Plains.
Visit www.peakdistrict.gov.uk/ events for a full list of upcoming ranger events and to book your place. Spectacular views offer opportunities for stunning photographs – here are three places with great photogenic potential: • Derwent reservoirs – woodland and moorland with far-reaching views across the reservoirs. West of Sheffield. • Manifold Valley – discover an area that feels ‘off the beaten track’, enjoy the family-friendly cycle track and magnificent limestone dales and Thor’s Cave. Parking at Hulme End, between Hartington and Warslow. • Tissington Trail – wide-sweeping views of rolling countryside, peaks and dales from this trafficfree trail. Park at Parsley Hay, near Hartington. Share pictures of your autumn adventure in the Peak District National Park on Twitter @ peakdistrict, Facebook or Instagram /peakdistrictnationalpark. And, even if the weather’s bad there is always a warm welcome at the National Park visitor centres in Bakewell, Castleton, Derwent (Fairholmes) and Edale.
scary and it’s really important that it’s understood by more people.”
tell other people too because they didn’t know what it was either.
Symptoms of PH include severe breathlessness, fatigue, blackouts and swelling around the ankles, arms and stomach. There is no cure.
“PH has really limited what I can do, both physically and mentally, and it’s really unpredictable. The hardest thing for me is the frustration of feeling I can’t do what I should be able to do at this age. But friends, family and my beautiful grandchildren keep me going and I try and stay positive for them.”
A recent survey by the PHA UK found 60 per cent of patients feel PH has had a ‘major impact’ on their quality of life and almost 90 per cent said it has impacted their mental and emotional wellbeing. Iain Armstrong, chair of the PHA UK, which is based in Chapeltown, said: “Many hear the word ‘hypertension’ and immediately assume it is high blood pressure, but PH is an extremely serious, devastating condition that has a huge impact on people’s lives. You can’t tell someone has PH just by looking at them, and our members tell us they are often frustrated by people not understanding how ill they are – which is why encouraging people to talk about the disease during this awareness week is so vital.” Pam receives treatment at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, one of just nine specialist PH treatment centres in the UK. She added: “Being diagnosed with PH felt like a bombshell. I had never heard of it and I felt lost. It was difficult to
To encourage understanding of the disease, the PHA UK is calling on people affected by pulmonary hypertension to talk to family, friends and colleagues during PH Awareness Week. The charity is also supporting a 200-mile awareness-raising cycle challenge, which takes place from Wednesday 24 Friday 26 October. The group of medical professionals, riding under the name of Team PHenomenal Hope, will set off from the PHA UK headquarters in Chapeltown and finish in London, visiting Royal Papworth Hospital in Cambridge along the way. BLOOMING SENSIBLE RESULT FOR FLOWERBEDS SHEFFIELD City Council has reached agreement with a local couple after requesting the removal of the flowerbeds they planted near their home.
Mr and Mrs Williams, of Hollin House Lane in Loxley, had received a letter from the Council after a complaint had been received from a local resident about flowerbeds on the public highway. A petition in support of the couple gathered 6,000 signatures in around two days. The Council then indicated it would pause any action whilst discussions took place.
Earlier this week, Councillor Jack Scott visited the couple in their home to agree a way forward. Councillor Scott took a potted plant as a peace offering and to apologise for the significant inconvenience and disturbance the couple have faced this week. Mr and Mrs Williams have agreed to move their compost bins, and the flowerbeds will remain. The Council will now write formally to say the matter is closed. Councillor Jack Scott, Cabinet Member for Development and Transport said: “I am so grateful to Mr and Mrs Wil-
liams for meeting with me in their home today. They rightly take great pride in these beautiful displays and I am sorry that the Council initially acted in a way that must have felt heavy-handed, even if it was following the letter of the law. I’m very pleased we have found a practical solution here and that everyone is happy.” Mrs Sally Williams said: “It was lovely of Jack to come up to our home and for us to meet him. I’m so glad common sense has prevailed now and we have found a sensible way forward.”
Council to bring revenues and benefits back in-house SHEFFIELD City Council has set out proposals to bring its Revenues and Benefits service back in house, from its contractor Capita, to help it meet the changing needs of the city’s residents and businesses. The work is part of a series of conversations with partners across the city to look at the future of welfare based services and the impact of Universal Credit on Sheffield residents. The proposals, which are being considered at the Council’s Cabinet meeting
on Wednesday October 17, state that the council plans to start operating this service itself in 2020, thereby ending its contract with Capita earlier than anticipated (it ends in 2022). This proposal follows a decision taken by the Council in June this year to also end the IT part of its contract with Capita. Capita currently operates the Revenues and Benefits service on behalf of the Council, the largest customer service area of any part of the council, which
includes housing benefit and council tax support, council tax billing and collection and business rates billing and collection. How the new in-house council service will operate is yet to be developed, but the council is proposing a system that will allow them to be more flexible in delivering services and be better able to respond to changes in welfare reform and the introduction of Universal Credit.
Councillor Olivia Blake, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Finance at Sheffield City Council, said: “Bringing these services back in-house will give us greater control and allow us to adapt and respond as the city’s priorities develop locally and as changes happen at a national level in welfare reform. “These services affect some of the most vulnerable people in Sheffield so it’s essential that we are flexible enough to support people through the coming changes in the way they receive benefits and manage their finances.
“Looking at this now, gives us the opportunity to develop a purpose built system that is responsive and planned with the needs of our residents and businesses in mind, while allowing more joined up work across council services and city wide partners, and presenting potential savings in service costs. Further details are available in the Cabinet report which has been published online at http://democracy. sheffield.gov.uk/ieListDocuments. aspx?CId=123&MId=6988&Ver=4
Local Royal Naval Association celebrates 21st anniversary ON Wednesday October 17, Stocksbridge and Deepcar Royal Naval Association held their annual Trafalgar Night social. This day was a doucle celebration as not only were they celebrating Lord Nelson’s famous victory but also the association’s 21st anniversary, having been formed in 1997. In attendance on the evening was Mayor of Stocksbridge, Councillor Julie Grocutt, the Associa-
tion Area Chairman Shipmate Keith Crawford MBE, members of Sheffield RNA, The British Legion and various guests. Following the welcome to all the guests by Chairman Shipmate Eddie Guest, there were replies from the Mayor, area chair and Sheffield RNA chair. A convivial evening began with the loyal toast and tribute to absent brethren.
There then followed a quiz, some bingo, a raffle and a buffet. The meeting concluded at 11pm with all members and visitors having been suitably refreshed and entertained. The Stocksbridge and Deepcar Royal Naval Association meet every third Wednesday of the month at the Legionnaire’s Club on Victoria Road, Stocksbridge at 8pm. For more information, call Chris Burden on 07976555864.
Caring families needed to adopt LAST week was national adoption week and Sheffield City Council is asking for more families to help change the lives of children throughout the city by adopting a child. There were 39 children adopted in Sheffield last year and 25 children are currently looking for an adoptive family.
They went along to an open evening, which gave them some food for thought and a couple of months later they began the assessment process. Once they were approved as adopters they were quickly matched with their little girl. National Adoption week this year is focusing on the qualities which make a good adopter.
One couple adopted a two year old girl over a year ago. They already had a five year old boy and had been undertaking IVF treatment to try for another baby, when they started thinking about adoption.
The council is holding an information evening for anyone thinking about adopting on November 6, from 6pm to 8pm at Quaker Meeting House in the city centre.
They had been apprehensive about adopting but after talking it through with some adopters they felt inspired to give it a go

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These QHHG WR EH ÂżOOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

Your Letters Fracking correction At the Ecclesfield Parish council committee meeting last Thursday a complaint was made by a UKIP councillor about the inaccuracy of a previous headline, ‘Council United Against Fracking’. Cllr Brownrigg was quite right, we did not take time to debate the merits or problems of fracking itself so the excellent headline was misleading and I have been asked to correct any misunderstanding. The wording of my resolution was “Ecclesfield Parish Council is dismayed at the way the Government has decided to make the Shale Gas Exploration a permitted right; thus taking any decision out of the hands of the local Councils that represent the communities that may have serious objections to such exploration.” and this was agreed unanimously. Your readers may not be surprised that any agreement between councillors was short lived and peace has been replaced by normal cross party sniping. I would be grateful if you could print this correction in full. Cllr Alison Gethin, Chair of the Planning Committee

100 years after the end of World War 1 is a good time to try and reach out in friendship, and begin to turn our annual remembrance into both Remembrance and Reconciliation. It is time. We expect to have a short talk from a friend who regularly works in Germany, and we may even have some correspondence with a church in Germany to share on the day. If we were able to welcome that morning local people whose roots were in Germany that would be amazing.

ire Night go with a bang Remember, remember to celebrate bonfire night safely ORGANISERS of bonfires and firework displays at pubs and community events are being reminded to take sufficient precautions to prevent injuries.
information should be covered in a risk assessment for the event: * Select a suitable site with enough distance to separate the fire, fireworks and spectators.
It is important that the event is thoroughly planned to ensure bonfire night celebrations are safe and enjoyable.
* Put suitable people in charge of the event and to take control in an emergency. * Use only Category 2 or 3 fireworks (BS7114) unless specifically trained.
There are so many fantastic local bonfires and firework displays that there is no need to arrange your own event. But if you decide you want to, make sure you follow this guide!
* Dispose of failed fireworks safely - wait 30 minutes, place in a bucket of water and contact the supplier regarding disposal.
Organisers must identify hazards and plan to control risks. The following
* Supervise the lighting and extinguishing of the
OUGHTIBRIDGE 2018
bonfire, do not burn anything that gives off harmful or toxic fumes such as plastics or foam-filled furniture. * If you are having a bonfire as well as fireworks it is important to consider safety from the start. * Make sure that your site is clear of obstructions, not overgrown, away from buildings, cars, trees and overhead cables, have safe entry and exit points including access for emergency service vehicles. * The firing zone for fireworks must be at least 50 metres x 20 metres, behind and downwind of the firing zone should be a dropping
zone of 100 metres x 50 metres, spectators should be at least 25 metres from the firing zone (remember you may need to reverse the site layout if the wind changes on the day). * Make sure there are enough people to look after spectator safety and deal with emergencies if they arise. Follow the fireworks safety code: Only buy fireworks marked BS7114.
Follow the instructions on each firework. Light fireworks at arm’s length using a taper. Stand well back. Never go near a firework that has been lit even if it doesn’t go off it could still explode. Never put fireworks in your pocket or throw them. Children must be supervised and never give sparklers to the under fives. Keep pets indoors.
Don’t drink alcohol if you are setting off fireworks. Keep fireworks in a closed box.

Water everything in. You may need to top up the soil a bit once you have done that and don’t forget to leave about 3cm between the soil surface and the container lip. This ensures that it doesn’t overflow every time you water it. If pots and containers are just part of your outside space then here
* Check your winter protection structures are still securely in place * Check that greenhouse heaters are working * Insulate outdoor taps and prevent ponds from freezing * Prune open-grown apples and pears (but not those trained against walls) * Prune acers, birches and vines before Christmas to avoid bleeding * Harvest leeks, parsnips, winter cabbage, sprouts and remaining root crops * Deciduous trees and shrubs can still be planted and transplanted * Take hardwood cuttings * Keep mice away from stored produce * Reduce watering of houseplants

Remember to check that your container has plenty of drainage holes. Waterlogged roots is the number one reason that container plants die in winter so make extra holes if necessary and fill the bottom with stones or broken pottery. Add multi-purpose compost until the pot is about half full and then get planting.
scheme of Christmas try mixing white and silver for a clean and stylish look. Put grey-leafed lavender and senecio together with white cyclamen and decorate with strings of silver beads and small LED white lights. Or, go for a beautiful Christmas rose – Helleborus niger – and plant with pale pink or white cyclamen and training ivy around the edges to make the container feel like it’s overflowing.

Revamping old pots is a great way to make the garden more festive. You can also buy terracotta, ceramic or plastic pots – glazed or coloured in red or white – or simply upcycle some household containers. Painting wooden or terracotta pots to give them a lift or wrapping them in fabric, tinsel or big bows is another way to make a stunning seasonal statement.

Defeat for War Memorial
Hessle 21-12 Stocksbridge RUFC BRADFIELD Brewery sponsored Stocksbridge Rugby entertained in form Hessle Rugby at the weekend, on a pleasant autumn afternoon and despite an improved team performance, the visitors eventually grabbed the spoils with a 21-12 victory to secure their second place spot, as Stocksbridge drop to fourth on the Division Four league ladder. A crippling injury list, with many of the minor injured actually playing through, unavailability and suspension robbed the Piggies of 14 members of their first team squad. Head Coach Rhys Keenan and his back room team are indebted to the lads who have put their hand up for first XV duty. Veteran forward Nigel Dowkes earned a recall to the starting pack and an un-named Australian trialist was handed an opportunity from the bench. After a tough week in training and with a positive warm up behind them, Stocksbridge Rugby again started well and put pressure on the visiting defence with centres Kelly and Westby looking in good touch with ball in hand. Hessle held their line firm and almost from their first meaningful attack scored a try after some clever interplay from their own back line. The home side pressed hard with back row forwards Newton and Spencer, alongside skipper
Rowett producing a good supply of the ball for Frith to set Bowskill and the pacey Stocksbridge back line away.
line to extend their lead and backed this up with a successful penalty goal to keep their scoreboard ticking over.
The home side gained some reward for their efforts when the improving Jordan Fletcher stole a line out ball and Rowett was on hand to crash over the line from close range to put Stocksbridge back in the game.
In contrast, Stocksbridge spurned two chances at goal and chose to run the ball searching for the score to bring them back into the contest, again losing the ball when it counted most.
The Pigs were further hampered when the resurgent Joe Smith was injured and replaced by Lewis Bowman. However, the heavy Hessle forwards began to struggle and resorted to slowing the game down to halt Stocksbridge’s progress. A yellow card and a 10 minute sin bin was admonished to the persistent offender. Stocksbridge tried hard, but a combination of loose passes and wrong options meant they were unable to turn their superiority into points. From a rare break out the visitors were awarded a penalty within goal kicking range, which they gleefully accepted, and then slotted a drop goal deep into first half injury time to leave the half time score 13-5 to Hessle. With two pretty evenly matched sides, there were chances at both ends during the second stanza. Almost against the run of play Hessle’s big forwards found some effort and trundled over the
By the time the evergreen Ricky Christopherson plunged over in the corner for a further Stocksbridge score and Bowskill converted, it was a case of too little too late. “We are definitely improving,” said Keenan afterwards. “We need to stick together as we have done through previous tough times and the results will come again. Credit to the lads who are carrying injuries and still playing, we know our time will come.” The Man of the Match award went to Ben Westby sponsored by Mark Logan Gas Services, Frith and Fletcher also caught the eye with some good work, whilst skipper Rowett tried hard to add fuel to the Stocksbridge fire. Stocksbridge Rugby are on the road this week for a difficult encounter with York RI, who are also on a run of good form, so Keenan will hope to have some of his injured troops available for selection and a good week of training behind them.
Wickersley 3-2 Oughtibridge WMFC OUGHTIBRIDGE lost top spot after a disappointing away defeat when Wickersley edged a entertaining game 3-2 at the Herringthorpe Stadium. The visitors dominated the opening period with some terrific play but despite all the pressure Oughtibridge could not capitalise. It was Wickersley’s Drew Houghton who gave the home team the lead with a well-executed chip but Matt Harrison levelled for Oughtibridge almost straight away, with a sharp finish. Oughtibridge were made to pay for a sloppy 15 minutes and first Brad Carroll gave Wickersley the lead in the second half and then a long range screamer from Kris Lee-Green made it 3-1 to Lewis Carder’s men. Callum Chambers reduced it to 3-2 when he reacted first to his own penalty after Wickersley keeper Jon Reed had saved the first effort, and they could have had a point if Ross Brown had taken a golden chance and Simon Duckworth hadn’t hit the bar in the final minute. War Memorial will contest the Steve Gee Merit Cup Final at Stocksbridge Park Steels Look Local Stadium against Norton Oaks on Wednesday October 23. Kick off is 7.15pm and entry is free.
FOUR DIFFERENT SCORERS FOR CHURCH IN AWAY WIN PENISTONE Church ran out 4-0 winners at Liversedge on Saturday in the Toolstation NCEL Premier Division with four different scorers on target. Sam Scrivens put Church ahead after just nine minutes and further goals from Jordan Coduri, Nathan Keightley and Kieran Ryan put the game to bed.
After the game Church manager Ian Richards commented: “There are a lot of positives today starting with the bounce back from last week’s disappointment, to put in a performance like today.
“I said before the game all sides lose games, the best sides don’t lose two in a row, and we certainly put that to bed.
game and we won two-nil scoring in the first half and the second half but I think Saturday’s game beat that.
“Secondly, I said before the game I though our home performance versus Liversedge was our best performance of the season in terms of professionalism, discipline, organisation, controlling the
“Again it was a real professional disciplined organised performance we were very effective going forward, some real quality linked to the goals and the players got their rewards.
“Also there was some real individual quality throughout the team, defensively as well as offensively, it wasn’t as if we didn’t have to defend at times and we did we defended really well.”

Park Steels rue missed chances By Dave Rhodes
IT was back to the east coast for Steels as they travelled up the A19 to high flying Marske United. The game started brightly for Steels against a strong looking Marske side unbeaten at home this year. Both Ruthven and Coleman will feel disappointed they couldn’t have taken decent opportunities to score and Litchfield’s one on one dragged wide was

Marske attackers to very little, certainly the Steels lads were growing in confidence as the game progressed.
A sequence of Marske corners were dealt with comfortably albeit one far post header that was cleared off the line by the excellent Charlesworth.
The Marske central defenders dominated most of the open play exchanges in the final third of the pitch after the break and Steels found it hard going to compete effectively here but Steels kept at it and probed forward with real intent in the first 10 minutes of the second half. Good inter change of passes down the right initially and then a long switch across the pitch put the Marske defence under a little pressure as a corner was conceded. Taken by Coleman the corner was swung in left footed, the ball dropped kindly to McFadyen central to goal eight yards out who half volleyed the ball high over the bar.

blow for Steels on 67 minutes when the referee failed to award a clear foul on Ruthven in his own half. Steels boys half stopped as all expected the whistle to blow. It didn’t and this brief hesitation allowed a penetrative run from midfield, a soft goal to be conceded as the ball was struck well from 18 yards central to goal with Amissah the away keeper getting a hand to it but failing to keep it out of the net. Steels kept going with terrific heart and spirit, Litchfield’s header off the line and Rhodes’ volley from close range was typical of the way the season was going for the Steels. Marske will certainly be up there when the season ends and Steels should take the positives on a good overall performance.
RESERVES BACK TO WINNING WAYS Stocksbridge PS Reserves 4 South Kirkby Colliery 2 STEELS reserves put last week’s cup loss behind them to get back on the winning trail in their league encounter last Saturday. They started the game strongly and created and missed several chances before young striker Whitham forced the ball over the line from close range to give them the lead. More chances went begging to increase the lead before Kirkby equalised however it didn’t affect Steels for long and they soon got back in front when Townsend headed home an excellent cross from strike partner Webster. With the score at 2-1 at the start of the second half Steels pushed forward and were awarded a penalty when Webster was brought down unfortunately the kick was well saved by the keeper. Adams did make it three later converting from a good ball by substitute Rodney Bruce. Once again Kirkby reduced the lead and Steels were struggling to finally put the game to bed. Young substitute Tom Staniland was making his present felt getting forward from his left back position and Steels were always in control of the game. Shepherd secured the points finally with a well taken shot from the edge of the box. The win keeps Steels in the third place in the premier division with twenty one points from ten games they have no game next week.
