TWO LOCAL BUSINESSES TARGETED BY THIEVES TWO break-ins hit local businesses in the last week, with high-value bikes and computer equipment being stolen.

Police are appealing for information following the theft of several high-value bikes from a shop in Stocksbridge. At around 3.30am on Wednesday January 30, it is reported that persons unknown forced entry to the Trek Cycles shop in Fox Valley Shopping Park. It is believed that the suspects used a vehicle to gain entry to the property, causing significant damage. A number of bicycles were taken during the burglary. On the following day, with the assistance of some diligent enquiries by the businesses owner and enquiries by E Group Response team, two males aged 42 and 24 were arrested on suspicion of burglary. One male has been released under investigation whilst the other remains in custody at Shepcote Lane. A number of high value computers believed to have been stolen in the burglary have also been recovered.

Iris celebrates 80th birthday after turning life around, says “You can too!”

A WOMAN who celebrated her 80th birthday this week has hailed the role that a local group has played in helping her turn her life around. Iris Goddard was 80 on Thursday and celebrated at the Thursday Lunch Club held in the community hall at Christ Church on Manchester Road, Stocksbridge. She was surrounded by friends and family as pianist Kamla Gilbert provided the entertainment and the army of volunteers prepared a meal for the 45 or so people gathered for the occasion. This is typical for the group, and this is now a regular thing for Iris. But just two years ago, things were very different for her. She explains: “I was sat at home and I didn’t want to leave. I was feeling down, anxious to leave the house and I had no confidence. “My doctor referred me to this group and I came along. It was a much smaller group at the time, it’s got a lot bigger since then. “After about six months of attending, I started to feel better and I feel like a different person now. I come along to the Thursday Lunch Group and the Monday Social Café. I’ve even formed my own little group of about five of us who go on trips together. We’re going on a short holiday to Llandudno together.” The lunch club is now at capacity and has a waiting list. Volunteers gladly lend their time and become friends of those who attend

the group. Transport is provided for anyone who can’t make their own way there. Iris hopes that others reading this story and having similar struggles will take the step of getting help. “It is hard to push yourself,” she says. “I found it very difficult. But I’m so glad that I did. Although this club is full, anyone can go along to the Monday Social Café, they just need to give Sarah a call and she will arrange for you to come. There are a lot of lonely people in the area. But it doesn’t have be that way – this group can help you change your life.” Iris’ daughter, Vicky Keyworth, also praises the group and has seen a big change in her mum. “It’s an incredible group and mum is an inspiration for other people in similar circumstances. She’s shown that you can change your life.” The Monday Social Café provides a place for people to talk, play games and get involved with different crafts. It is a varied cross-section of society, with men in their 20s and women in their 80s all happily attending together. It meets in the Christ Church community hall on Mondays, from 9.30am to 1pm and is organised by Sarah Knightley. Medal experts visit Sheffield and South Yorkshire to help raise money for local ex-service charities THE week commencing Monday February 4 could be a fantastic opportunity for residents of Sheffield and South Yorkshire to beat the credit crunch and cash in on their inherited and unwanted medals. KNIFE CRIME DOWN IN SOUTH YORKSHIRE

THE Crime Statistics have been published today by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

Dr Alan Billings, South Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner, explained the figures.

“But some other categories showed increases both in South Yorkshire and nationally – such as stalking and harassment (47%), sexual offences (4%), violence against the person (17%). Some of this may be due to better recording and reporting, but the police will need to work hard to understand why there are these increases and what can be done to reduce them.

He said: “Last year the overall crime level increased slightly in South Yorkshire by 1%. But this was far lower than the national increase of 8% for England and Wales, and far less than the Yorkshire and Humber increase of 9%. “It is especially pleasing to see that knife crime was down in South Yorkshire by 12%. South Yorkshire Police have been working very hard with partners to understand why young males in particular have been carrying knives and to find ways of reducing this. “We have all been working very hard with partners – the schools, the local authorities and the voluntary bodies – to help young people understand the dangers of carrying blades. “There has been a more sophisticated approach – helping young people to get away from involvement with drugs and gangs, but also targeting known offenders and increasing stop and search. This is putting into action what a previous Labour Prime Minister called ‘Tough on crime and tough on the causes of crime’. “Other crime categories were also down in South Yorkshire – such as robbery and theft – whereas

Ruth Morgan of the group told Look Local: “We are a small friendly group who like to delve into archives and history, who like to get outside and explore the landscape – we are always finding new things and new ways of looking at them. “We do survey work on the moors, sometimes some excavation, and we do fieldwalking; we then need to learn how to wash, label, draw and analyse the finds. So whatever your skills and interests, there is something to get involved in. “Our talks are usually held at 7.30pm in the Community Room at Christchurch on Manchester Road in Stocksbridge, on the third Wednesday of the month (generally each month except January, August and December). “Look out for adverts in Look Local and in local venues. You will be very welcome to just drop in as a visitor, or you can join the group on the night for £5. There is a small donation at

each meeting. Tea, coffee and biscuits are served. “On Wednesday February 20 at 7.30pm, we have a talk by David Inglis, a postgraduate at the University of Sheffield, with the title ‘Follow the Yellow Brick Roads: the Roman Routeways of Sheffield and North Derbyshire’.” David explains what the talk is about: “The Roman roads of the Sheffield region are notoriously under-represented in the archaeological record. A recent three-year research programme conducted by the University of Sheffield and the wider local archaeological community has provided a much needed desk based investigation and analysis of the historical sources and combined it with modern archaeological field investigation. “The results of this study provide two archaeological stories two thousand years apart - the first that of the Romans and their roads and the second of subterfuge and collusion within the local archaeological community. “This presentation will merge these two stories through summary of the research conducted over the last three years to present a modern synthesis of Roman road studies in our region.”

Then on Saturday March 2, the group are holding a workshop in Bolsterstone Village Hall from 10am till 3pm, looking in particular at pottery and flints in an informal ‘show and tell’ style. Pottery expert Chris Cumberpatch will be showing the group how to examine and date pottery, and how to tell what the original shape was, even when only a broken shard remains. Worked flint is regularly found on the moors in this area and some goes back to the Mesolithic, around 6,000 to 7,000 years ago; as flint is not found locally, we know it is being brought in to make and use tools. Tim Cockrell will reveal how flint tools were made and used, and how to date and draw them. You are welcome to bring along any pottery or flint finds you want to know more about. Great response to Valley Festival ORGANISERS of this year’s Valley Festival have been elated by the huge response from local groups who wish to take part. There will be non-stop music over two days on Saturday June 15 and Sunday June 16. In partnership with Fox Valley, the daytime events will be held in combination with the shopping centre’s food festival and their third anniversary celebrations. The Saturday Night Live concert, which proved a big hit last year, will be held on the Saturday evening at Stocksbridge High School with a wide range of local performers including Bolsterstone Male Voice Choir, co-presenters of the music festival with Inyerface Arts, No Identity and other young singers, Thurgoland Community Choir and the Bus Pass Buskers. On Saturday afternoon at the High School there will be a youth concert with singers and dancers, including

choirs from Stocksbridge and Deepcar junior schools. Four hundred local musicians took part in last year’s first Valley Festival, the biggest musical event in the district for 80 years. Festival director Hilary Osborn said: “We are very excited about this year’s event. The response from local groups has been fantastic already. We will be having two wonderful days of non-stop music. “The partnership with Dransfield Properties will make for a brilliant festive atmosphere in Fox Valley and the evening and afternoon concerts at the High School promise to be memorable. “The aim of the festival is to showcase the district’s brilliant musical talent and the fund we started last year has already helped young local music groups.”

Slimming expert says we’re all “carbfused” and that you can eat carbohydrates and lose weight this year! A WEIGHT-LOSS consultant from Sheffield is urging anyone who wants to lose weight in 2019 not to fall for the common misconception that cutting out carbohydrates is effective for long-term weight loss, after new research found that low-carb diets are often difficult to follow and leave people feeling hungry, bored and restricted. The study, conducted by YouGov and commissioned by Slimming World, concluded that the nation is confused about the role of carbohydrates in health and weight loss. They found more than 70% of people have tried to lose weight, with more than a third (37%) of them following a low-carbohydrate diet. However, many of those surveyed said they found diets that restrict carbohydrates difficult to follow, because of feeling hungry, bored and restricted in what they could eat. Donna Cutts, a Slimming World consultant for the multiple award winning Stocksbridge groups, says that while many people wishing to lose weight believe they need to cut out high-carbohydrate foods from their diet – like pasta, rice, potatoes and bread – in fact, members of her slimming group eat these foods regularly, lose weight, and keep it off. She says: “We hear conflicting and confusing messages about the best way to lose weight all the time, especially this time of year. Often these

messages in the media, on social media and within the diet industry tell us how we need to ‘cut out’ carbohydrates in order to lose weight. When the survey asked if starchy carbohydrates should be the main source of calories in a healthy, balanced diet, 81% thought this was a myth or weren’t certain whether it was a myth or fact. We really are a nation that’s ‘carbfused’! “At Slimming World, though, we know that carbohydrates play such an important role in both a healthy diet and sustainable weight loss. Banning’ foods is often counterproductive. Having been overweight myself I know this just leads to cravings, which in turn leads to feelings of guilt and low self-esteem – a vicious cycle. Instead, filling up on low-energy-dense foods like carbohydrates, fruits, vegetables and lean meat, means you can eat larger amounts for fewer calories and feel fuller and more satisfied while losing weight, making it much more sustainable in the long-run. “This, along with increasing activity levels slowly and consistently, and getting the support of a warm and friendly support group like mine, is the magic formula for successful weight loss. Just ask my amazing members!” Alicia Allott, a group member who lives in Deepcar, has lost four stone

10lb since joining the group in January 2018. Alicia says: “I spent years feeling ‘carbfused’ before I found Slimming World! For years I would try various diets that cut out food groups, especially things like bread and potatoes, thinking they were going to help me lose weight fast. I did initially lose weight, but I ended up feeling so hungry, deprived and unsatisfied that I just couldn’t stick to them. I always ended up putting on all the weight I’d lost and more, and feeling rubbish about myself in the process. “The thing I love about Slimming World is that it really isn’t a diet. It’s more of a lifestyle change. Your Letters Day with a housing officer Dear Look Local readers, Last week I spent a ‘day in the life’ of a Housing Officer and shadowed the local team based in Stocksbridge Town Council. I’d like to say a huge thank you to all the housing officers who work there, for not only making me so welcome and showing me the ropes but more importantly for the fantastic work they do in our local area. A big chunk of my councillor caseload is related to housing and anti-social behaviour issues which is why I wanted to spend the time with the team to see first hand the work that they do. We visited a number of senior residents to check if everything was OK in their homes, the housing officers knew everyone, with such a personal approach to the role. It was also, at times, a very affecting experience; locally there are many positive things happening, however, the impacts of austerity, particularly on the most vulnerable are stark. Tory cuts are having by far the biggest impact on the vulnerable, people with health conditions, people who have just come out of hospital, people who want to get back on their feet struggling with the nightmarish complexities of universal credit and payments delayed for months, things which surely help no one find a job.

So far around 500 objections have been submitted to the Council’s Planning website. In addition to the many individual comments, objections have been posted from Stocksbridge Town Council, Angela Smith MP, Bolsterstone Community Group and individual Stocksbridge town and city councillors, CPRE (Council for the Protection of Rural England), Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust.

Officers are asking for your help to trace two dog owners AT around 12.15pm Saturday February 2, a man and woman were walking their four dogs along the Underbank Reservoir in Sheffield. It was reported that one of their dogs, which was off its lead, ran up to a seven-year-old boy and attacked him. The boy sustained injuries that resulted in him needing surgery. The owners gained control of their dog, stopped to assist the victim and tried to leave their contact details, however due to the nature of the incident, the victim’s grandmother did not manage to record them. Officers would like to reassure the public that this is an isolated incident and are asking anyone that can help provide information to get in touch.

In the present state the NHS is in surely we can all make small changes that would save thousands of pounds that are much needed elsewhere.

Leading online luggage retailers, Sportsdirect.com, offers up some top tips for making the most of any type of suitcase, for any type of holiday. Save room with miniatures. People rarely need a full bottle of shower gel when travelling abroad for less than a week; save room in the case by substituting family-sized bottles for miniature versions which can be easily rolled up in socks, or packed tightly into a compartment. Roll instead of fold. Although the majority of UK holidaymakers prefer to fold their clothes, rolling allows for more items to be packed into even the smallest of cases, and also prevent some items from creasing too much.

Remove bulky packaging. This can prevent toiletry spillages on clothing items, as well as making space in the main suitcase compartment. College hosts evening with Barnsley FC SOUTH Yorkshire’s new online radio station The Vibe, supported by Barnsley College hosted, an Audience with Barnsley FC, where Chief Executive Gauthier Ganaye talked about his role within the football club. The special event was hosted by Carlo and Chris from The Vibe Red’s Report show and Barnsley Creative Media student Kyle Walker. Special guest Gauthier was joined by Barnsley FC’s Academy Manager, Bobby Hassell, and Under 23s Head Coach, Martin Devaney. The 130 attendees took the opportunity to ask questions and network with fellow Barnsley FC fans. The event raised over £250 for Yorkshire Air Ambulance on behalf of Barnsley FC fan, Steve Croft, the volunteer who suffered a heart attack at Oakwell in September. He was saved by medical staff from both clubs as well as paramedics before being airlifted to hospital by an air ambulance which landed on the pitch.

Steve said: “The Yorkshire Air Ambulance is run by voluntary donations and it costs over £12,000 a day to keep both of Yorkshire Air Ambulance’s helicopters maintained and in the air. Stocksbridge Golf Club annual president’s message GOLF, for the last few days of harsh wintry weather, has not been possible with the course closed under ice and snow.

The president concentrated his key messages on the course improvements that have been achieved in the last year, including a new practice putting green, relayed paths on the higher holes on the course that have significantly improved safety and the hard work of the greens staff to keep all 18 holes open when the wet spring and dry summer months of 2018.

At this time of the year it is customary for the club president to issue his annual report to members, in preparation for the Annual General Meeting on February 20. This year is no different and John Yeates, who has been president for over two years

The president reflected on the sad death of Jamie Hobson in December, but provided assurance that the replacement plans for the greens staff team was now complete, with the confirmation of Robert Grayson as senior greenkeeper and the appointment of a new greenkeeper, Jamie South, to work with the rest of the team. Like a lot of golf clubs, Stocksbridge is always looking for new members, but the president was pleased to let members know that in financial terms the club is stable. John said: “This is due to

the careful management of club accounts, committed playing members and the very active social side. Youngsters in north Sheffield to benefit from Forge Youth football A YOUTH group in Sheffield has received grant funding of £4,680 from the South Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner to provide football sessions to young people on a Friday night. The funding awarded from the Commissioner’s community grant scheme will provide a nine month project for young people between the age of 11-year and 17-years, engaging them in diversionary football activities. The project brings 200 young people from the Upperthorpe, Hillsborough, Winn Gardens, Crookes, Crosspool and Nether Edge areas of Sheffield to the football pitches based at Goodwin Sports Centre in Sheffield. The free of charge activity is provided on a Friday evening. Teams of young people are formed and entered into a league of which 21 teams are involved. Many of the young people help with managing their own teams and refereeing. The matches are fun and competitive promoting teamwork and health and wellbeing. Dr Alan Billings, South Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner handed over a cheque to Sam Evans and Chris Nall from Forge Youth on Thursday, 31 January. He said: “Forge Youth are providing diversionary activities in Sheffield for

young people who might otherwise be on the street with little to do. I particularly welcome the way the young people take some responsibility for managing activities. “The project provides free football sessions for young people from families who may be struggling to afford club fees and subs. It gives young people an enjoyable time and they learn some important skills as well.” Forge Youth work with children and young people across Sheffield. Their work has a focus on the more deprived areas of Sheffield, seeing lives changed on a regular basis. They work in close partnership with many churches and other organisations across Sheffield to make the work happen. Sam Evans from Forge Youth said: “We are very thankful for the support that the Police and Crime Commissioner has provided which has enabled us to engage with hundreds of young people on Friday evenings this year. AFTER having a couple of non-competition matches postponed due to the recent cold snap, Bradfield Brewery sponsored Stocksbridge Rugby begin the next phase of their season in the Yorkshire League Division Four Shield with a home clash against Leeds-based Burley Rugby. Due to previous results in their respective regional competitions Stocksbridge Rugby sit at the top of this new mini league and could well be amongst the favourites to lift the silverware at the end of March. Head coach Rhys Keenan said: “The boys are in good shape and confident after the winning per-

formance away at York Rowntrees in their last outing. They’re raring to go after a decent rest.” But Keenan was also quick to add a note of caution. “We can’t take anything for granted and will have to earn our results. I am looking to the whole squad to buy into what we’re after from them.” It looks like Keenan will have a full roster to select from for the weekend, as the club welcomes back players after injury lay offs, but without chunky prop forward Connor Brown who was sent off in a recent friendly and faces a spell on the sidelines. Training has been well attended and the sessions have been tough however Keenan has replaced

this Friday’s captains run through with a team meeting to ensure everyone is on the same page for Saturday’s game. Stocksbridge will also entertain Halifax on February 23, with Thirsk the visitors on March 9, in what has provisionally been earmarked as the club sponsor’s day. Stocksbridge are hoping to retain the services of former PNG Rugby League International and Eagles favourite Menzie Yere for at least one further guest appearance for the club. Kick off is on Saturday at 2.15pm and all are welcome with free entry.

War Memorial rattle the woodwork in big win Oughtibridge WMFC 4 Chapeltown 0 DAVID Hudsonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Oughtibridge WM are still on the fringes of the title race as they saw off bottom placed Chapeltown RBL 4-0 at the War Memorial Ground. Kicking against the wind first half, Oughtibridge dominated with Justin Westoby twice hitting the post. Matt Harrison also went close but again found the post rather than the net. Oughtibridge did score when Ross brown was upended in the penalty area and Chas Tunnard did the rest. The War memorial thought they had doubled their lead just before half time but Joe Appleyardâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s header was ruled out for a foul. Tunnard soon made it two after the break when he finished a great move. Westoby then hit the post for a third time before Harrison got in on the act when he added two more excellent goals to continue his great form scoring his sixth goal in three games.

HINCHCLIFFE BREAKS 32 MINUTE BARRIER AS PBs TUMBLE PENISTONE Footpath Runners either took to the roads of Dewsbury or the fells above Langsett over the weekend. Those heading over to the Dewsbury 10k were looking for personal bests on a course which is well known for producing fast times. Many personal bests were achieved but performance of the day went to Scott Hinchcliffe who became the first ever Penistone runner to break the 32 minute barrier in a time of 31-43. Scott was the third runner back in a field of 2,200 runners. A number of hardy runners took on the 14.5 mile Mickledon Straddle on the snowy fells above Langsett. The race heads out from Langsett towards Howden Reservoir before returning to Langsett via the tough Howden Clough climb.

Conditions were challenging with many taking a tumble on the icy surfaces. First Penistone runner back was Robin Clough in 2-1320. Julie Darigala had a strong run to claim the prize for first over-40 woman.
