MP QUITS LABOUR AND APOLOGISES FOR COMMENTS

MONDAY proved to be eventful for Stocksbridge and Penistone MP Angela Smith after she left the Labour Party and then faced criticism for comments she made on a live television broadcast.

saying: “I have seen the clip from Politics Live, I am very sorry about any offence caused and I am very upset that I misspoke so badly. It’s not what I am, I am committed to fighting racism wherever I find it in our society.”

The 57-year-old, who has been in office since 2011, announced her resignation from Labour along with six other MPs; Chuka Umunna, Luciana Berger, Chris Leslie, Mike Gapes, Gavin Shuker and Ann Coffey. Together, they have formed the Independent Group.

In her resignation announcement, she said: “I was born to a Labour family in 1961. My father was a printer by trade and my mother started work when I was a teenager, eventually moving on to a job as a receptionist in the NHS.

“In return, the state has a role to play in enabling individuals to make the best of themselves and the opportunities available to them. It has a responsibility to maintain national security and to keep people safe at home. And it has a responsibility to foster economic growth, in the context of a mixed economy.

“For my parents, working-class pride was not about enjoying poverty and wearing it as a badge of honour. It was about self-respect and believing that we could do better, that there was nothing wrong in getting on in life.

“Unfortunately, the Labour Party no longer reflects these values. It has undergone major change since the election of Jeremy Corbyn as leader in 2015, changes which have destroyed the proud political movement built by our predecessors.

“This is one of the values that has underpinned my political affiliation all my life. I believe in aspiration and know that people do not want to be patronised by left-wing intellectuals who think that being poor and working class constitutes a state of grace.

“Labour is a party now characterised by intolerance and fuelled by hatred for anything other than a hard left political agenda; it fosters division rather than unity and despises all

Angela Smith appeared on BBC Two’s Politics Live programme later in the day and speaking about BAME (Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic) working-class women facing impediments in their lives, she appeared to say: “The recent history of the party I’ve just left suggests that it’s not just about being black or a funny tinge, you know, different, from the BAME community.” The MP quickly recorded an apology and posted it to her Twitter account,

TWO CHARGED WITH OXSPRING MURDER TWO people have been charged with murder, in connection with the death of 48year-old Gary Dean last year.

They have been remanded in custody and will appear before Sheffield Magistrates’ Court on Saturday February 16.

Scott James Dawson, 41, of Allotts Court, Barnsley, and Carol Dawson, 71, of Stonewood Grove, Barnsley, were charged on Friday February 15, both with murder.

Mr Dean was found with significant injuries in a wooded area behind Moorend Lane, Silkstone Common, close to the Trans Pennine Trail, at around 5.40pm on Thursday September 6 of last year.

RAM RAID SUSPECT ARRESTED DETECTIVES investigating a series of ram raids on businesses across Sheffield have made an arrest in connection to the incidents. The 24-year-old man was arrested earlier this week, from the Parson Cross area, on suspicion of conspiracy to commit thefts. He has been released under investigation.

At around 2am on Sunday February 11, it was reported that Screwfix in Hillsborough was targeted, followed by a break-in at the Texaco petrol station on Burncross Road, Chapeltown, 45 minutes later. At 4am that same morning, it was reported that the Tesco Express on Dykes Hall Road, Hillsborough, had been tar-

geted in a ram raid and a Spar store on Pot House Lane, at around 4.20am. Officers continue to ask anyone with information to come forward. If you can help, please call 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111, quoting incident number 40 of 11 February 2019.

Calling junior rangers

EXCITING new opportunities are beckoning for young people keen to look after the Peak District National Park by becoming junior rangers. The organisation are looking for young people, aged between 11 and 18, to join a new group at Langsett. The Langsett Junior Rangers programme starts in May and, to give potential recruits an idea of what’s involved, a free taster session is being held on Saturday March 16 from 1pm to 4pm. The event will be at Langsett Barn, off the A616, at Langsett.

world. He recently retired from his clinical role as Professor of Respiratory Medicine at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle.

Professor Paul Corris, who works closely with the Pulmonary Hypertension Association UK (PHA UK), based in Chapeltown, was recognised by the International Pulmonary Vascular Research Institute at an awards ceremony in Barcelona.

The lifetime achievement award is the second Paul has won in recent months. He also picked up the British Thoracic Society medal in December, awarded annually to individuals who have greatly contributed to respiratory medicine in Britain.

Pulmonary hypertension is a life-limiting heart and lung disease which affects just 7,000 people in the UK.

“I am thrilled and honoured to receive this award,” Paul said. “To be recognised for a lifetime’s work in developing improving clinical care for patients and the quality of one’s research by your international peers is very special. I also recognise and acknowledge the fantastic support given to me by my colleagues in the pulmonary hypertension clinical service.

Paul, 63, was heavily involved in securing a national pulmonary hypertension service which was established in 2001. It is made up of eight specialist centres across the UK, including the Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield. His research has also led to higher success rates for lung transplants across the

ported me throughout my career despite the many days I left the house very early and arrived home very late.” Paul is also co-chair of PHocus2021, an advocacy group set up by PHA UK which campaigns for changes to public policy. Iain Armstrong, chair of PHA UK, said: “It is fantastic to see Paul recognised with these two awards. His tireless work which led to the establishment of the pulmonary hypertension specialist centres is an inspiration and he has made a huge difference to so many people’s lives across his career. He has always kept the patient’s needs at the centre of his care. “He has been an exceptional colleague and friend over the last 20 years and fully deserves these awards as he begins his well-earned retirement from clinical practice.”

Six defibrillators installed ECCLESFIELD Parish Council and The Rotary Club of Wortley have joined forces and each has committed £5,000 to benefit the local community.

Six public access defibrillators have now been installed in the Ecclesfield Parish area, the first one being outside the Parish Council Offices. The others have now been installed at Grenoside Community Association, Ecclesfield Library, Kinsey Road, High Green, the Acorn Inn on Burncross Road and on Chapeltown toilets. Cllr Garry Weatherall, the Chair of Ecclesfield Parish Council, said: “I cannot think of a better way of the Parish Council supporting its local community than by providing this vital lifesaving equipment which is available at all times of day and night.”

The Rotary Club of Wortley has been delighted to join with the Parish Council to support the scheme. All money donated by the Rotary Club has been raised locally and they feel it is therefore fitting that they support local initiatives such as this. The Rotary Club is also partfunding a defibrillator being fitted at Hesley Wood Scout Camp and the Parish Council has agreed to pay for the maintenance of this machine along with the weekly maintenance of all the machines carried out by the contractor. The defibrillators will be listed on the Yorkshire Ambulance Service database of life-saving public access defibrillators and can be called upon in an emergency to assist those suffering a cardiac arrest. Time and time again they have been shown to save lives.

Tutor Richard set for German exhibition BARNSLEY Sixth Form College Art tutor Richard Kitson has received a special invitation to exhibit his work in Barnsley’s twin town, Schwäbisch GmĂźnd, in Germany.

The exhibition, entitled Richard Kitson: Portraits, will run from Saturday March 16 to Saturday April 27 in the Labor im Chor gallery within the Museum und Galerie im Prediger. Richard was invited to stage the exhibition after members of the Barnsley Schwäbisch Gmßnd Twin Town Society

saw his work on display at The Cooper Gallery during a visit to South Yorkshire in 2018. The German visitors were so impressed that Richard then received an official invitation from the Lord Mayor of Schwäbisch GmĂźnd, Richard Arnold, to exhibit his work in Germany. Richard Kitson said: “I feel very fortunate to be exhibiting my work in Schwäbisch GmĂźnd. I think it is important to maintain and build new cultural links and I’m looking forward to getting to

know our twin town and its people. I will also be going to the town to run some workshops with students from the art school in April which I’m really looking forward to. The exhibition at the Labor im Chor gallery will be Richard’s first international solo exhibition. In 2018, he was selected to participate in Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year and has already painted several notable figures including Barnsley MP and South Yorkshire Mayor Dan Jarvis MBE and Paralympic Gold medallist Kadeena Cox MBE.

OASIS: The Real Story (In All It’s Glory) OASIS: The Real Story (In All It’s Glory) launches exclusively in Sheffield on March 1, marking the 25th anniversary of the band’s debut album ‘Definitely Maybe’. Sheffield’s O2 Academy will be the first to experience an evening with Iain Rob-

ertson and Tim Abbot. The band’s former tour manager and head of security, and the former managing director of their label Creation Records, will join on stage to divulge into the real rock and roll life behind the curtain of Oasis. The night will take the audience on a blast-from-the-past

backstage journey sharing never heard or seen before stories, secrets, photos and footage. The event marks the twenty-fifth anniversary of the band’s debut single, ‘Supersonic’, and debut album ‘Definitely Maybe’. There will be exclusive Oasis related merchandise available and Iain Robertson will be sign-

ing copies of his international best selling book, ‘What’s the Story’. Tim Abbot says: “In ’94 we played the Leadmill and the year after we returned and played the arena. That was our first arena gig and it changed everything! I can’t wait to hit the stage again in

Sheffield and relive the stories with the fans! The event will continue at the official after-party ‘Mod For It’ at Maida Vale on West Street, playing 90’ Indie & Britpop classics. ‘Oasis: The Real Story’ tickets provide free entry and a free shot.

I am an expert in helping people arrange their Wills, Trusts, Lasting Powers of Attorney and Pre-paid Funeral Plans. Along with my colleague Haworth Ward-Drummond we specialise in helping all kinds of people gain peace of mind by providing professional advice, but with a personal touch. We offer a FREE consultation without obligation for anybody who would like to know more about any of the following:

• Making a basic Will • Setting up Lasting Powers of Attorney • Protecting your home for future generations • Pre-paid Funeral Plans

Included Photo Your name and address:

We know that planning for the future is a very personal matter. Not everyone is able or wants to travel to an appointment in town to sort out their affairs. We can visit you at a convenient time in the privacy and comfort of your own home to discuss your unique circumstances.

A visit and consultation is completely free and you are under no obligation to do anything. If you decide to make any arrangements you can be safe in the knowledge that all our professional services and work are fully insured and we are members of the Society of Will Writers, so all our clients are assured of the

highest standards of conduct at all times. All our clients (and their families) that we have helped in the past have been very happy with our services and tell us they have gained great peace of mind knowing that they have sorted everything out.

Jane came to see my parents to help them protect the family home. She really made us all feel at ease, especially my parents. We had no idea what we could do to protect Mum and Dad. Having set up trusts and Lasting Power of Attorney’s, Mum and Dad can get on with their lives without worrying, knowing everything is now in place. Thank you Jane! Mrs Boyle and family, Ecclesfield

a long time in politics. Today our MP Angela Smith left the Labour Party together with others to form a break away party. Will she now do the honourable thing and test the electorate with a by election to determine if she still commands the support of her constituents? I did not vote for Angela Smith because of her views on Brexit as I am in support of Brexit. There are thousands who voted for her because she was the Labour candidate, do they now feel betrayed as they are now represented by an independent amongst a group of independents with about as much clout as the SDLP of old.

I would like a by-election but I consider Angela Smith to be dishonourable so I do not believe she will risk leaving the Westminster gravy train until the next election. Should there be a by-election and she be voted in then that’s fine but to push yourself on to the electorate as a weak independent where they have no say in the matter is not fine.

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These QHHG WR EH ÂżOOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

Forever evergreen

IF your garden is looking a bit bare at the moment, don’t be disheartened … it’s the perfect time to put some evergreen structure into it that will anchor your

summer plants and keep your garden looking great throughout the winter months. Evergreens are plants, shrubs or trees that don’t lose their leaves,

even in winter. Which means that if you want colour and interest in your garden all year round, and if you don’t want to spend a great deal of time gardening, ever-

greens can be an ideal solution. If you have a large plot to work with, then you might like to consider including some evergreen trees, but for small outdoor spaces there are evergreen shrubs such as Skimmia japonica, there are ferns which stay green

all year round like Adiantum venustum (Evergreen Maidenhair), there are heathers which do the same Erica carnea and there are also evergreen plants and grasses. The joy about evergreens is that they are great as a year-round framework for

the garden. You can use them to fill gaps in borders and cover boundary walls and fences or provide focal points and visual statements. You can also make your evergreen garden as formal or relaxed as you like. Symmetrically shaped box trees in containers, carefully

trimmed hedges and evenly spaced trees and conifers or shrubs will give your garden a very formal look. Alternatively, mixing container plants with evergreen grasses such as Stipa gingantea, and planting a variety of different height plants and shrubs together, will look more natural and tranquil.

Evergreens such as box, yew, bay, holly and conifers are also ideal for topiary – if you’re feeling brave you can create your own designs or simply plant topiary balls, cones or spirals for striking year round evergreen highlights. Depending on the weather, February is a time to turn your attention back to the outdoors and venture out to see how prepared you are for the start of spring. To do lists for February from the experts

The essential spring job is digging and preparing, just so long as the ground isn’t waterlogged or frozen. Digging and forking the soil allows you to loosen it, remove weeds and add compost or manure, which will improve soil structure and create a moisture and food reserve for plants. There’s nothing better than digging and breathing in the smell of the soil as you turn it over, knowing that your efforts will be rewarded with some great tasting veg or fabulous flowers. National Trust This month there are signs of the approaching spring, with bulbs appear-

FLOOR ANGELS

ing and wildlife waking up as light levels and temperatures increase. There’s plenty to do indoors this month to prepare for the season ahead. Outdoors, as the garden comes to life again, it’s time to prune shrubs and climbers, such as Wisteria as well as evergreen hedges. RHS Create leaf piles in quiet corners of the garden border or leave a swathe of grass uncut; these offer mini-beasts places to spend the winter and provide ground feeding birds somewhere to forage. To help birds with springtime nesting, put out the fur from pet grooming so that birds can use the fur and line their nests (February and March and onwards). RSPB

OUGHTIBRIDGE SNOWDROP GARDEN

A KEEN Oughtibridge gardener is to open her garden to the public to raise money for charity on Sunday February 24. Open from 11am to 2.30pm, at 72 Church Street, Oughtibridge, S35 0FW, Linda Stewart’s beautiful garden is part of the National Garden Scheme’s snowdrop garden scheme, with hundreds of the pretty white flowers on display. Hidden from the busy street is the peaceful country garden with naturalistic planting leading down to Coumes Brook and backed by native woodland. In February the garden bursts into

life with a stunning display of snowdrops. One of only two snowdrop gardens in Yorkshire, the garden has been part of open days many times before, but this is the first time in seven years it has been open to the public, with another date coming up in the summer. Entry is £3.50, with children allowed free entry. Tea, coffee and home made cakes will be available. Money raised from the open day is distributed to a wide variety of charities.

Stocksbridge remain top of the table but will need to show more enthusiasm, intensity and commitment in the coming weeks if they are to stay there and win the competition. Thirsk 24-19 Stocksbridge en a yellow card and 10 minutes in the sin bin to cool down. There were some necessary harsh words spoken at half time, with director of rugby Andy Tyers demanding a reaction and for the players to show some pride in their jerseys. Stocksbridge began to claw their way back into the game.

Bowskill found his range with some excellent attacking kicks, skipper for the day Frith was busy around the loose, barking orders at his troops and the forwards started to put some phases together with hard working Gary Woodcock showing up well. Big Sam Whitaker added some grunt to the pack and the

Five points down, almost total dominance and 10 minutes to play, added to this a yellow card for the home side for consistent scrum infringements and the travelling Stocksbridge supporters actually believed that the comeback could be complete. Frith was unlucky to leave a single stud on the touchline as he darted down the wing, Whitaker was held up over the line and somehow Thirsk hung on to win, with Stocksbridge gaining just a losing bonus point for the second half efforts.

The man of the match award went to Gary Woodcock, sponsored by Chappell Brickwork & Plastering Services, for an aggressive all round display. “The first half showed just about everything that is wrong with rugby at Stocksbridge,” said Tyers afterwards. “However, the second stanza was almost a total reverse, showing all that is good about the boys. They know what we expect and what our standards are; me and Keeno will again be challenging them to reach these at the weekend.” This week’s visitors to Coal Pit Lane are Halifax Rugby, who will be encouraged by the Stocksbridge result. Kick off is 2.15pm with entry free for all.

Directors confirm Stocksbridge District Golf Club is in good health FINE weather over the last week brought Stocksbridge golfers out in big numbers as 57 members played in round 10 of the Winter Cup and the result was a close-run affair. Conditions could not have been better with clear blue skies and mild temperatures and it certainly helped with

some excellent scoring. The course is in excellent condition and the greenkeepers are already busy with cutting fairways and greens. C. James (20) won the round with 42 points. J. Buxton matched (15) matched the 42 points but had a slightly lower back nine score. N. Wood

(12) came in third with 39 points and pipped P. Smith (24) with the same score, but a better back nine. Earlier in the week, the Dragons Section continued their own Winter Cup series. J. Leaning (17) won outright with 37 points. S. Murphy (12) was second with 36

points and N. Weaver (17) came in third with 35 points.

Current captain Frank Milnes said: “In a challenging environment for golf clubs Stocksbridge remains in good health. This is mainly due to the commitment of its playing and house members, but also the effective

CHURCH BATTLE BACK FOR A POINT - WAR MEMORIAL LOSE OUT IN FIVE-GOAL THRILLER - U18 SIDE GO TOP PENISTONE Church overcame a string of injuries both before and during the game to snatch a draw against Bridlington Town on Saturday, drawing the game 2-2. Brett Lovell was ruled out in the run-up to the game and left back Andy Young was injured in the warm-up, seeing Danny Howes moved to his position from central midfield. Then, 20 minutes into the game, Sam Scrivens had to come off injured, with Elliot Firth also coming a cropper shortly after.

It was Church who opened the scoring after just five minutes with veteran striker Andy Ring slotting home. But after the two in-game injury blows, Nathan Modest levelled the scores for the home side and Bridlington were 2-1 up on 66 minutes with Jake Day tucking home a penalty. But Church kept going and Nathan Keightley pounced in the 89th minute to gain a share of the spoils. OUGHTIBRIDGE War Memorial could have closed in on the top three had they won at Woodseats Club but they were left empty

handed as the home side won by the odd goal in five, losing 3-2. After a slow start, Oughtibridge seemed to get a grip on proceedings but Matt White gave Woodseats the lead after just five minutes. An excellent effort from Chas Tunnard and a superb solo effort by Wilson Coupe had David Hudson’s men deservedly ahead by the half hour mark. But Liam Bryan got Woodseats back on level terms as half time approached and then the same player scored the winner in the second half.

STOCKSBRIDGE park Steels under 18 yellow have gone top of their division with an emphatic 10-1 win over Dinnington Town. Cameron Ronksley got on the scoresheet, this follows on from him making his debut with the reserves on Saturday after impressing in training. There were also two hat tricks - one from development player Brandon Whitfield and one from Jacob Gibbon. Other goals were scored by William Lowry, Ethan Wilkinson and Luca Defalco.

STEELS CAUSE UPSET the visitors, who sit second in the EvoStik East Division.

Report: Owen Harrison Photos: Peter Revitt

BRIGHOUSE Town failed to capitalise on many glorious opportunities as Steels’ Luke Mangham scored a volley from close range against the run of play in the second half to snatch all three points from

Brighouse Town instantly went on the front foot. The Steels had to endure a spree of chances from the visitors early on; the best chance coming from the captain Aaron Martins after he received a high

ball from Gabriel Johnson and nodded it towards the bottom right of the goal but Adam Kelsey’s fingertip save guided the ball away for a corner. Although Stocksbridge were defending with excellence and intercepting many final balls from Brighouse, the Steels’ failed to create

chances in result of these defensive stops.

The first sniff of a chance for Stocksbridge came in the 10th minute when Brody Litchfield chipped a ball over the top of the Brighouse defence to create an opening for Luke Mangham, but he was unable to get to the ball and pounce on the opportunity. The Steels were only marginally better than the side who were thumped at home last Saturday. It was only because of the fact that the visitors were poorly executing chances that Steels were still level after 20 minutes of play. The first real sight of goal for the hosts fell to Scott Ruthven after a Rory Coleman throw in was headed down by Brody Litchfield to allow the Steels’ number nine to latch onto the ball, but his shot was fired

wide into the side netting. The dominance of the visitors continued up until half time, with chances mainly falling on the right hand side of the pitch that Brighouse attacked. The second half was no better from a Stocksbridge point of view. Chances were rare from the host’s and due to this, it allowed Brighouse, again, to create plenty of openings for goals. However, the league high fliers were unable to execute them

with precision and accuracy, which allowed the Steels to have a small chance of bagging all three points against the in-form team from West Yorkshire. And that small chance they took. After great work by Brody Litchfield to earn a free kick on the right hand side, Rory Coleman drove a high ball into the box which the visitors’ goalkeeper parried away into the path of Luke Mangham who volleyed

in from close range against the run of place to take the lead in a game that Brighouse, overall, dominated. But the main goal now was to defend this lead against a Brighouse Town side that looked increasingly likely to hit the back of the net sooner or later. Brighouse continued to pepper the Stocksbridge goal with shots but good defensive play from the hosts together with poor accuracy on goal from the

Brighouse forwards saw Stocksbridge continue to lead. Stocksbridge have a much needed rest week after some tricky ties in recent matchdays. The Steels’ next game is on Saturday March 2 at home to another high flying and inform team, Tadcaster Albion who sit fourth in the league which will be no means easy for Stocksbridge as they continue to fight for survival in the Evo-Stik East Division.
