CONSULTATION FOR ACCIDENT BLACKSPOT A PUBLIC consultation is to take place after yet another incident occurred at an accident blackspot in Oughtibridge this week.

There was an accident involving a motorcycle on the morning of February 27 and in the past five years, there have been three motorcyclists and six cyclists have been injured – six of them seriously. The council have now called a public consultation for a proposed road safety scheme at Bridge Hill and it will take place on Thursday March 14, from 2pm to 7pm at the Zion United Reform Church on Langsett Road South, Oughtibidge. Susie Pryor, senior transport planner for the City Growth department of the council said: “There have been a number of accidents involving people using motorcycles and bicycles travelling on Orchard Street, Oughtibridge being involved in a collision

with people driving out of Bridge Hill into Station Lane without giving way. In the last five years three people on motorcycles and six people on bicycles have been injured, six of them in seriously. “We are about to commence with public consultation on a road safety scheme at this location. We are proposing to close Bridge Hill, at the top of the hill, where it meets Langsett Road South.

“There is a letter and the plan is being delivered to local residents in the coming week. The consultation at Zion United Reform Church will allow local residents to ask our officers questions from 2pm to 7pm.” Oughtibridge resident Terry Barrow has been campaigning for something to be done about the junction. She said: “I am grateful to the council for listening to concerns about the number of accidents in Oughtibridge and commit-

ting to consult on a proposal to reduce them. “However, there are fears that the scheme being suggested has a number of drawbacks which include the effect on local businesses and homeowners nearby as well as the safety of pedestrians who cross near the proposed turning area. “I personally still believe, as do almost 75% of survey respondents, that making Bridge Hill right turn only and moving the crossing with appropriate railings to prevent shortcuts would offer a better solution. “Having fought for the opportunity this consultation offers for almost three years I would urge everyone with an opinion to get involved to ensure that the outcome offers the best solution to everyone; pedestrians, cyclists, drivers, locals, business owners and people who pass through our village.”

HOLLIN BUSK PLANNING CAT SPARKS HOUSE FIRE DELAY CAUSE ANGER THE Planning Committee that is to decide the fate of a large housing development on Hollin Busk has been delayed once again.

Sheffield City Council cancelled the March 12 slot at last minute with a new date yet to be set. Local action group, Upper Don Action Group (UDAG), was formally told last week by Council planning officials that the long-awaited planning committee meeting had been agreed for March 12. For good measure, UDAG’s Chairman, John Hesketh, double-checked at 9am on March 4. At 3pm on the same day, John was contacted by the same Council official, announcing that it had been cancelled. It’s 16 months since the application for the 93+ houses was made and UDAG say that the repeated delays are unacceptable. John said: “This latest cancellation by the Council is a disgrace. It comes on top of delay after delay.

“The original date for this key planning meeting was March 16 2018. It was then switched to April 13 2018. For the rest of 2018 the committee date disappeared altogether. It reemerged at the end of last month – ‘definitely’ March 12. We now know this date has also been scrubbed only days after being announced. It’s farcical, a black comedy. “How on Earth are local people in Deepcar and Bolsterstone meant to live a normal life? A massive housing development is planned next door, one that will utterly transform the area, yet the Council cannot seem to decide the fate of the planning application. It is worth reminding ourselves that the idea of this new 93+ dwelling ‘village’ was first mooted in January 2017. UDAG held its first public meeting about this proposal in March 2017 – yes, that long ago. “The planning application itself was lodged in November 2017. Normally, planning applications are decided in three months or so, perhaps a little longer with a complicated

application. But a staggering 16 months has passed since this planning application arrived at Sheffield Town Hall. “For over two years neighbours have had to live with this threat and to cap it all they’ve had to put up with the shifting sands of the planning meeting that would decide whether or not the large housing scheme would go ahead. “I sat on this planning committee for the best past of two decades and was chairman for five years. I have never known anything like the situation with the Hollin Busk/Royd Farm proposal. It should have been put to a planning meeting months ago – a year ago – and decided one way or the other. Then local residents could get on with their lives. “The Council ought to be ashamed of itself how it has handled this planning application. In my time as planning chairman, I was known to be tough on Council administrators – I certainly would not have allowed a situation like this to arise.”

A CAT is believed to be responsible for a kitchen fire and explosion at a property on Ecclesfield Road, Sheffield at 5.15am on Wednesday morning. The family pet is thought to have knocked the hob on, which then set fire to items on top of the hob and ignited an aerosol can which exploded and blew the kitchen window out. Luckily a South Yorkshire Police Officer was just passing at the time and called for fire crews to attend, along with evacuating the occupants. Firefighters from Elm Lane station were called to the fire and quickly put the fire out.

LOCAL WALKING INITIATIVE WINS AWARD

STOCKSBRIDGE Walkers are Welcome have won one of the coveted 2019 Duke of York’s Community Initiative (DOYCI) Awards. The Royal Award is presented to a small number of local community projects based in Yorkshire and the Humber, organisations that have been subjected to rigorous and robust scrutiny and are deemed to be: ‘of real value to the community, well run and an inspiration to others.’

Walkers are Welcome (WaW) is a U.K. wide, community led network of accredited towns whose purpose is to develop and promote walking in areas with something different to offer. Stocksbridge Walkers are Welcome (SWaW) gained national accreditation in 2011. After coming second in the 2018 Ramblers, ‘Best Walking Neighbourhood Awards,’ Stocksbridge has become the new ‘go-to’ place

for recreational walking. The countryside is open, walks are varied, clear instructions are available, and the area is relatively unspoilt. The SWaW website has detailed downloadable instructions for almost fifty walks in, and around, North Sheffield. Founded by the Duke in 1998, the Initiative focusses on encouraging and rewarding innovative and inspirational community projects. His Royal Highness the

Duke of York will make presentations and meet the successful applicants at an Award Ceremony to be held at Catterick Camp, on Wednesday April 3. HRH The Duke of York said: “The Community Initiative which bears my name is a great success story throughout the whole of Yorkshire with over 400 first class community schemes having received my Award. They have been encour-

aged informally to act as mentors and examples of best practice to other communities, spreading far and wide the message that often the remedy for short comings can be generated at community level.” You can see the walks and find out more at https://walkersarewelcome. org.uk/

BRADFIELD SIXTH FORM TO CLOSE

BRADFIELD School has announced that its sixth form will close. The school underwent a consultation period and that has now ended with the “difficult” decision now made. In a letter to parents, chair of the governors Dr. Moody said: “As you know we have recently consulted about the future of the sixth form at Bradfield School. Following the end of that consultation period, on Thursday February 28 the governors took the very difficult decision to close the sixth form to new students from September 2019. “This decision was taken reluctantly but in the current very challenging financial climate, governors felt they had very little choice. “We are determined to work tirelessly to improve outcomes for students at Bradfield and the ability to focus resources on Key Stages three

and four should help accelerate improvements. “We as governors are committed to ensuring that Bradfield School’s finances move forward on a sound footing to that end further savings will have to be made including restructuring some of the staffing posts and reducing the size of the school leadership team. These tough changes are to stabilise the budget, and ensure we don’t continue to add to the overspend each year. “A-Level courses for the current sixth form students will remain, as will the support for their future career choices and university applications. Moving forward, the very good links formed with local sixth form providers means that the current Year 11 students have been guaranteed a place at Forge Valley or Tapton School sixth form, as long as they meet the entry requirements.

“The feedback from Tapton staff, following recent visits by some of our Year 11 students, was how polite and motivated our students are, they are certainly looking forward to welcoming them to their provision. This guarantee will also be extended to other year groups.

Two men fatally injured in collision TWO men have died following a collision in Barnsley on the evening of Friday March 1. Emergency services were called at around 6.15pm following reports of a two-vehicle collision in Whams Road, Barnsley, near to the Pipe Works.

“I would like to thank those who responded to the consultation. The Governors read every single response made. The responses raised a variety of positive suggestions and ideas that can help mitigate some of the impacts of the closure decision.

It is reported that a black BMW Z3 and a black Mitsubishi Outlander were involved in a collision, near to Fox Holes Grove.

“While closure has been a very difficult decision, we are certain that it will secure the future financial stability of the school and help the school to make the improvements in standards that are at the forefront of our strategic planning.”

The families of the men have been notified and are receiving support.

Two men travelling in the BMW, aged 57 and 23-years-old, suffered fatal injuries and were sadly pronounced dead at the scene. A 39-year-old woman driving the Mitsubishi suffered minor injuries and was taken to hospital.

The road was closed to allow investigators to carry out initial enquiries, but it has since been reopened. Police are now appealing for any witnesses to the collision to make contact. Please call 101 quoting incident number 761 of 1 March 2019.

It’s not too late to make a Will... Hello, I’m Jane Bowland, your local Estate Planning Consultant of 13 years experience. I am an expert in helping people arrange their Wills, Trusts, Lasting Powers of Attorney and Pre-paid Funeral Plans. Along with my colleague Haworth Ward-Drummond we specialise in helping all kinds of people gain peace of mind by providing professional advice, but with a personal touch. We offer a FREE consultation without obligation for anybody who would like to know more about any of the following:

• Making a basic Will • Setting up Lasting Powers of Attorney • Protecting your home for future generations • Pre-paid Funeral Plans We know that planning for the future is a very personal matter. Not everyone is able or wants to travel to an appointment in town to sort out their affairs. We can visit you at a convenient time in the privacy and comfort of your own home to discuss your unique circumstances.

LOOKING for a challenge to develop new skills? Not sure what to do next? Come along to the ITEC open day on Wednesday March 20 from 10am to 3pm at The Hub Church, 512 Manchester Road, Stocksbridge, Sheffield, S36 2DU. Tutors will be on hand to give advice about our accredited short courses for 2019 as well as information of apprenticeship programmes across South Yorkshire. Meet the friendly and supportive team.

highest standards of conduct at all times. All our clients (and their families) that we have helped in the past have been very happy with our services and tell us they have gained great peace of mind knowing that they have sorted everything out.

Jane came to see my parents to help them protect the family home. She really made us all feel at ease, especially my parents. We had no idea what we could do to protect Mum and Dad. Having set up trusts and Lasting Power of Attorney’s, Mum and Dad can get on with their lives without worrying, knowing everything is now in place. Thank you Jane! Mrs Boyle and family, Ecclesfield

Penistone Fairtrade Fortnight THE Fairtrade in Penistone committee are thanking the local branch of the Co-op for mounting a display of the Fairtrade goods on sale there. On Friday morning there was also an opportunity for customers to taste Fairtrade bananas, wine and chocolate. The Co-op has also provided chocolate, tea and other essentials for the Chocolate Tea Party we are holding in St Andrew’s Church from 2.30pm to 4.30pm on Friday March 8. Everyone is welcome. A spokesperson for Penistone Fairtrade said: “The main themes of this year’s Fairtrade Fortnight are to do with chocolate and the West African women who grow its main ingredient - cocoa. Being female as well as poor

makes it very hard for them to get a fair deal from the merchants and big chocolate companies. “Even here in Britain women are still fighting to be treated fairly. Their achievements are often not recognised in the same way as those of men.

“So we asked the Year Five and Year Six pupils in our local primary schools to find out about a talented Yorkshire woman, draw her portrait and write about what she has done to inspire them. “We were delighted by the response and urge you to take a look at the hundred or so

posters displayed around Penistone. Most children portrayed famous people from sport and showbiz but others chose scientists or politicians. For instance, did you know that the first ever British astronaut was a woman (Helen Sharman) - and a Yorkshire woman at that?

“She was chosen ahead of thousands of male applicants, winning a difficult struggle against stereotyping and prejudice. Other children wrote about their family members or friends who have set them a wonderful example. You don’t have to be famous to inspire others!

“We hope the children’s work, the Fairtrade display and the Chocolate Tea Party will inspire us all to treat people fairly. Buying products with the Fairtrade mark is a big step in that direction.”

Mother’s Day Feature

Issue 1051

Call 0114 283 1100

Mother’s A RELATIONSHIP which is always with us is the one we share with our mother. They are there to guide us, support us, love us and help form who we are. They have a big hand in shaping our lives and our personalities and it is for this reason that many say that their mother is their best friend. We might have our own individualistic approach in paying tribute to these amazing people in our lives, our mothers. Of course, many mothers will love a nice bunch of flowers or a special meal out somewhere and our feature will help with that! As ever, we encourage our readers to keep it local when shopping for gifts! Here are some other ideas. One really different yet conventional Mother’s Day gift idea would be trendy tableware and one or many cookbooks to go with them. It is important to choose the present as per her style of cooking and serving.

If going in for something unique or different in terms of designs and patterns of the tableware or dinner set, then the same should blend in with the pattern of the tableware collection of your mum. The cookbook will serve to complete the Mother’s Day gifts set. The times have brought in many changes to the gifting trends as well. Thus, even in case of the occasion of Mother’s Day gifts that last longer and can be treasured as collectibles for a long, long time will find a better place in our mother’s hearts. A thoughtfully compiled list of music or movies and better still both is a sure shot way of making this Mother’s Day memorable for the both of you. This is also one gift that the whole family can enjoy and bond over on family time. With the ever decreasing home space, the need for welcoming greens inside our homes is more prominent than ever.

Home gardens are a trend that are fast catching up with people integrating the inside and the outside of their homes. Your mother is going to love this innovative, unique yet useful gift idea. Indoor plants, small herbs in pots, flowering shrubs that grow in shade placed artistically on customisable stands would not only add to the beauty of your home but would also bring in a freshness to your home surroundings. Turn to our gardening feature for inspiration! In keeping with the flow of your house settings, you can choose a number of home decorative pieces as Mother’s Day presents for your mother. If feeling unsure of finding the right kind of decorations, it is not a bad idea to keep your mother in the shopping.

weekends during February at both John Charles Centre for Sport in Leeds and Ponds Forge International in Sheffield, saw qualifying swimmers take part in a packed programme of events. Stocksbridge Pentaqua Swimming Club were thrilled that over 50% of the club’s swimmers achieved qualifying times for this year’s county championships and earned a place competing against the best swimmers in the region. All of the club’s swimmers swam brilliantly over the three rounds of the competition, achieving a 71% PB (personal best) rate during the last weekend alone. Swimmers also secured an

amazing 37 top-10 placings, 18 of which were top-five placings which included bronze medals for Ben Croft in the 14 years 50m breaststroke and 50m butterfly, and a bronze medal for Logan Price in the 13 years 200m breaststroke. Finishing the last weekend of the Yorkshire championships on the ultimate high, Stocksbridge Pentaqua’s boys 13/14 years relay team stormed to success with a fantastic first-

place win and a gold medal in the 200m freestyle team event. The team were clear winners in both their heat and the final, beating off stiff competition from other elite clubs from across the county. Congratulations to Ben Croft, Makyle Iqbal, Logan Price and Finley McNicholas for a very exciting race and a well-deserved gold medal! This New Year success follows hot on the heels of a suc-

cessful 2018 which culminated in the club’s presentation evening back in December. As well as celebrating achievements throughout the year, swimmers were awarded trophies and medals that they’d won at the club’s internal gala which took place in October. The internal club gala, which is a licensed ASA meet, saw members compete in 50m and 100m distances for all strokes, plus

found Bowskill in support and a well-timed final pass enabled whippet Callum Green to fly into the corner for a superb score, much to the delight of the large home following.

The successful candidate will be provided with training and development that includes Care Navigation/Active Signposting.

Big Sam Whitaker continued his recent good form plunging over the line after some good phase play from the forwards, with back rowers Newton and Aspin particularly effective.

Frith had the final say, crowning an excellent personal performance with the final, and bonus point score, a jinking individual effort from 40 yards leaving would be defenders in his trail.

The post includes membership of the NHS pension scheme.

Halifax rarely threatened, and even in possession they were driven back by an eager Stocksbridge defence, keen to right some wrongs from the previous week.

a 200m or 400m freestyle challenge. Swimmers were ranked by age group and awards given to the first three in each age group. Awards were also given to swimmers with the highest achievement in the challenge events.

The overworked Halifax defensive line conceded a penalty and Scott Bowskill slotted an easy three points to extend the lead. Stocksbridge continued to dominate after the break. The pick and go tactic was working to good effect and Pete Newton was on hand to split the defence with some nifty footwork to cross the whitewash with Bowskill adding the extras. A simple Bowskill penalty calmed any nerves and pushed Stocksbridge further ahead. The try of the match or even the season followed a searing back line move with Westby sending O’Leary through a gap, O’Leary then

They now go into their final fixture against Thirsk, which is also their sponsors day, on Saturday March 9. Victory would see them win the Yorkshire Division 4 Shield Trophy. Head Coach Keenan will be looking for revenge after the Pigs were turned over during a recent trip to the north of the county. Kick off is 3pm and all are welcome. The progressive club are holding their sponsors day event with a 1pm start in the clubhouse, all sponsors and potential sponsors are welcome, as are members to hear vice chairman Martin Byes talk about the development of the club. Late drop outs forced a reshuffle of the selected team for the Stocksbridge develop-

ment side who fought hard by eventually succumbed to a more experienced home side by 42-21. Ossett started the better with two quick tries, which seemed to shake the visitors into playing. Stocksbridge just couldn’t capitalise on their possession and the home side scored a further three tries as the visitors relaxed to make it 35-0 at the break. Stocksbridge made good use of the break and came out strong with Jack Spencer becoming more influential, Luke Gentles and Tom Spencer making good ground before Gentles touched down to get the visitors on the board. With spirits and confidence lifted, the development XV began to play a bit more freely and more tries followed from Joey Jones and Liam O’Leary, with Jack Spencer improving all of them from the kicking tee. Ossett had the last word with a comeback try of their own however, Development Coach Andy Bell was pleased with the effort of his charges and the performance of newcomer Tom Marshall in his first ever game of rugby.

Cooke triumphs at Norton Nine

MARATHON specialist Gareth Cooke won the popular Norton Nine road race in a time of 4927. The Penistone runner managed also to break the club’s record time for the rarely run distance. Two more club records fell on the day with Bill Phillips, 1-0727, breaking the man’s over-70 record and Julia Johnson, 1-0521, beating the women’s over-55 mark. Elsewhere a team of four hardy runners took on the High Peak Marathon Challenge. The route is 43 miles long and starts and finishes in the peak district village of Edale. If that was not tough enough the race itself begins just before midnight and runs through the night. Mist added to the navigational challenge of the event. Teams run together in groups of four and a Penistone team of Ian Charlesworth, competing in his 15 High Peak Marathon, Chris Charlesworth, Steve Sanders and John.

The team placed 20th in a time of 11-38-32. Staying on the fells a number of Penistone runners took on the Lads Leap fell race which starts and finishes in Crowden just off the Woodead pass. The Penistone contingent were in the prizes including winning first team with Damian Kilpin, Tom Fryers and Julie Darigala being the counters. Each of the team members also won their respective age categories - Damian Kilpin first over40 man, Tom Fryers first man under-21 and Julie Darigala first woman over-40. Junior members and senior member Richard Mackie took part at the South Yorkshire Orienteering event at Norfolk Park. Stand out performance came from Flynn Rogers on the white course who came an excellent fourth out of 151. Penistone results: Norton 9 Road Race - 1, Gareth Cooke

Captain changeover at Stocksbridge Golf Club SATURDAY saw the annual captain changeover ceremony at Stocksbridge Golf Club. The clubhouse was packed with members there to support the incoming captains, Alison Sedgwick and Steven Haigh. Club president, John Yeates, hosted the event with his usual humour and aplomb. Outgoing captains, Frank Milnes and Bev Sykes, delivered their final duties by presenting cheques for their chosen charities through the year, Weston Park Hospital and Stocksbridge Leisure Centre. Each charity received a cheque for over £4,000, a fantastic achievement. John Yeates congratulated both Frank and Bev for the commitment they have shown to the golf club over the last 12 months. He also took the opportunity to welcome Alison and Steven into their new roles. Their charity for 2019 will be St Luke’s Hospice and there will be many fund-raising events over the coming year. The

President closed the evening’s ceremony and wished all members a successful golfing year. Meanwhile, the playing members in the club continued to enjoy the very mild conditions for the time of year. 47 played in the 11th round of the Winter Cup, which was won in emphatic style by M. Shouler (12) with 45 points. His round included two birdies and twelve pars, which gave him a four-point lead over L. Hydes (12) on 41 points and L. O’Sullivan (4) on 40 points. L. O’Sullivan played the course to scratch, not a feat that is achieved very often on the hilly course at Deepcar. Earlier in the week, The Dragons section completed the latest round of its Winter Cup. N. Weaver (17) was the outright winner with 40 points. P. Hodkin (17) was second with 39 points and G. Stainforth (15) third with 38 points.

Tadcaster too strong for Steels By Owen Harrison

AN Aiden Savory brace and a freak own goal helped Tadcaster Albion inflict a third defeat in five games on the Steels as pressure mounts on a Stocksbridge side who now sit just one point above second from bottom outfit Pickering Town in the EvoStik East Division. The visitors came into the tie at the Look Local Stadium on the back of consecutive wins against mid-table Loughborough Dynamo away from home and Marske United on home soil last week. The Taddys sit comfortably in fifth position, three points off Pontefract Collieries who they face later this month on home turf. But it was the hosts who started off more impressively. The first glimmer of goal fell to Brody Litchfield as his shot from the left hand side of the box was tamely hit into the advertising boards, causing the Tadcaster Albion

Reece Fielding was one of the stand out players for the Steels and he was called into action shortly after the five minute mark, making two crucial and crunching challenges to avoid a dangerous situation from ensuing. Another chance fell to Stocksbridge minutes later, as Steels number nine, Brody Litchfield, again impressed by playing a ball over the top of a bemused Tadcaster Albion defense, but the receiver of the cross, James Morris, was flagged offside. Although Steels would have a host of chances, they found themselves 1-0 down at the break and two further goals proved to be enough for Tadcaster to take the win. Steels face a trip to Belper Town on Saturday in a re-arranged game from January. They’ll go to Derbyshire sitting just one point above the drop zone, a perilous situation to be in as they approach the run-in.

TOM Cadzow scored the only goal of the game as Penistone Church took a 1-0 win away to Maltby Main on Saturday. An early sending off for Maltby saw the home side sit back and soak up the pressure but it only lasted until the 50th minute when Cadzow found a way through. THIRD-PL ACED Stannington Village saw off Oughtibridge War Memorial 3-1 in an excellent game.

Oughtibridge were made to pay for a string of missed chances when Ross Brown and Olly Black shot tamely, Matt Harrison also went close but again fired straight at the keeper. The away side definitely had the better of the first half but went in 0-0. In the second half, again War Memorial looked the more likely but Lewis Dickinson got the opener for Village when keeper Keiran

Osborne failed to hold a free kick. Matt Harrison was then in the wars when he clashed heads and had to be sent off to hospital with a large gash to his head. Again Ross Brown and Niall Smith missed great chances but it was Stannington who then scored twice more with Arnie Grayson and Ben Cook adding to it. Niall Smith scored the sole effort for a plucky Oughtibridge who always gave it maximum effort.
