Pervert pleads guilty to further offences
AN 83-year-old man has admitted a string of additional sexual offences against multiple victims.
Roger Dodds, formerly of Cotswold Road, Hillsborough, appeared at Sheffield Crown Court on Tuesday March 19 where he pleaded guilty to 14 offences of indecent assault. Dodds was also charged with one count of misconduct in a public office. He pleaded not guilty to this offence and the court agreed that this would lie on file. The hearing was adjourned for sentencing at Sheffield Crown Court on Thursday April 18.
Dodds was sentenced to 16 years imprisonment in February 2017 for multiple counts of indecent assault against five victims, who cannot be named for legal reasons.
Following his sentencing in February 2017 and the subsequent press coverage, seven more victims came forward to report abuse. DC Dorothy Fagan, Officer in the Case, said: “The victims involved in this matter have shown immense courage in coming forward to report these crimes. Their strength of character throughout this investigation has been commendable.
“It is hoped that this result will bring some closure and justice on their behalf. The outcome demonstrates the commitment of South Yorkshire Police to tackling sexual offences and bringing offenders to justice, regardless of when those offences took place.” To report concerns, please call police on 101. You can also call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. You can also call the National Association for People Abused in Childhood (NAPAC) free on 0808 8010331 10am-9pm Mondays to Thursdays, 10am-6pm on Fridays.

Leisure centre requires funds urgently PENISTONE Leisure Centre has undergone much work in recent times but has recently been dealt a blow – repairs to the roof are much more serious than first anticipated and there is a shortfall in the funds needed for the repair. Penistone Leisure Centre was closed in the summer of 2011 due to council funding cuts. It was reopened by a brilliant team of volunteers as a community run Leisure Centre in 2012, and has been successfully operating without outside funding ever since. A wide range of activities are available at the centre and it’s a busy, thriving community hub. In recent times hard work has gone into grand plans to renovate and extend the Centre to make it accessible and useful to everyone. Following a big community consultation, the volunteers have been busy finalising the plans with the architect and applying for funding from various grant providers to make this dream a reality. Organisers were delighted to receive funding from Blackstone Edge Community Wind Farm Fund to make repairs to the old and leaking pitched roof, to re-roof a flat roof at the back of the centre, to install new A-Rated windows in the front of the building and to install LED lighting in the main hall. The scaffolding went up, and roofers began the work. But this week, they were dealt the blow that the damage to the roof is much worse than expected and than they had been quoted to repair.
In the centre of the pitched roof, there is a massive roof-light. Nearly all the glass panels in this roof-light are cracked or broken and the wooden frame that holds the glass is badly decayed and fragile. This repair is vital and urgent to safeguard the centre, and prevent further damage to the floor in the hall. A total of ÂŁ7,080 has been quoted to make the roof safe and watertight, and now the centre urgently needs to raise this amount, as it isn’t covered by the grant. Frances Greenwood, a volunteer at the centre, said: “We had been planning on launching Penistone Leisure Centre’s Big Build Fund soon, with the aim to raise around ÂŁ50k overall. But as it turns out, ‘soon’ isn’t soon enough! “We are heading towards a critical cash flow problem, so without help from the community, the project could stall, or worse - go under! As you can appreciate, this would be utterly heart breaking for the many volunteers and centre users who have put their time and effort into the Leisure Centre for the last seven years. This is just the start of the fundraising. “Can you imagine a Penistone without ‘the drill hall’? We can’t! Please support us in providing sports facilities for everyone, and a community place for Penistone. Please consider donating what you can afford – any amount is appreciated - to help us through this problem, and towards our end goal!â€? SUSTRANS TO DEVELOP NEW TRAILS BRADFIELD Parish Council and Stocksbridge Town Council have jointly commissioned the charity Sustrans to develop cycle and walking route options over and through their eastern boundary, the Upper Don Valley, into the Sheffield Lakeland Landscape Project (SLLP) area, including links to the existing Trans Pennine Trail. The SLLP includes both Stocksbridge and Bradfield Parishes within and adjacent to the Peak District National Park. Both Councils are keen to identify and enhance access to this important and beautiful landscape which is rich in heritage and in recreational challenges at all levels for families and individuals alike. Sustrans is the national charity which makes it easier for people to walk and cycle. It created the
National Cycle Network, which is 16,575 miles of cycle and walking routes, many of which are trafficfree. The need for better routes and improved provision for walkers and cyclists has never been so urgent as it is now. With increased traffic flow expected on existing infrastructure with new developments, this work will be a step forward in realising the ambitions of the area in elevating walking and cycling provision as a priority and supporting a sustainable way of tackling issues such as congestion, air quality and health inequality. This work represents the ambition of both Bradfield Parish Council and Stocksbridge Town Council in promoting the Sheffield Lakeland as an emerging key tourist destination area, helping to increase local economic growth through
attracting new and more cyclists and walkers to the area. Both Councils welcome the opportunity to work together, as they appreciate the opportunities joining up the local cycleways and footpaths will bring to the Upper Don Valley. Commenting, Cllr Julie Grocutt, the Mayor of Stocksbridge, said: “This is an exciting project that will not only provide better access to our great outdoors. It will also make healthy lifestyles more achievable for local people and will have a positive impact on the environment feeding into the clean air strategy.” Significant housing developments particularly at Deepcar and Oughtibridge/Wharncliffe Side bring developer and local authority commitments to cycleway and footpath provision. The two Councils

wish to see these fully implemented to best advantage for our new and present residents as well as for the enhancement the visitor economy in the area. Cllr Trevor Bagshaw, Chairman of Bradfield Parish Council said: “The woodlands, crags and heathland to the east of the river have tracks and paths that connect to the TransPennine Trail and beyond. My fellow councillors with our colleagues on Stocksbridge Town Council want to see route options and improvements that will enable walkers and cyclists to overcome the barrier of the railway line and the river. “We hope this initial work will enable new long or short distance trails that will take the traveller deep in to the Sheffield Lakeland and beyond in to the furthest reaches of the National Park.”

Motorcyclist dies after collision
A MOTORCYCLIST has sadly died following a collision on the A616 Stocksbridge bypass on Thursday March 21. At around 10.10am, emergency services were called to reports of a collision involving a grey motorcycle and a blue articulated lorry on the A616, between Tankersley roundabout and the M1 junction 35a slip road. The rider of the motorcycle, a man, sadly suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene.
A pillion passenger on the motorcycle, a woman, has been taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries where she remains in critical condition. The road was closed for several hours to allow investigations to take place. The closure has now been lifted and the road has reopened. The family of the rider has been notified. Officers would ask that the public refrain from posting speculation or potentially distressing con-
tent about the collision online. Further details about those involved will not be released at this time. Officers are keen to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the collision this morning, especially any motorists travelling along the A616 who may hold dashcam footage. Please call 101 quoting incident number 261 of 21 March 2019.

Owls fan takes on stadium challenge
2019 BRITISH COACH HOLIDAYS A SHEFFIELD Wednesday fan is among a group of football fans and a former player who will walk from Sheffield to Stoke to raise money for a Chapeltownbased charity. Josh Armstrong, 20, will join his cousin Matt Carr and eight others to take on the 55-mile trek from Hillsborough Stadium to the bet365 stadium on Saturday March 30, arriving in time for Stoke City’s game against the Owls at 3pm. Josh’s mum Jackie has the rare heart and lung disease pulmonary hypertension (PH) and the group are raising money for the Pulmonary Hypertension Association (PHA UK). The charity operates from Thorncliffe Park in Chapeltown and works nationally to provide support to people affected by the lifelimiting condition. Josh said: “I heard about the guys doing the walk and
wanted to get involved because it’s so important that we raise awareness. Since my mum was diagnosed a few years ago we just want to raise as much money as we can and do everything we can to try and get a cure. “I’m really looking forward to it – I haven’t done anything like this before or trained too much other than a few walks with Matt so we’re just going to hope for the best!” The walk has been organised by Mark Harris, a Stoke City fan whose brother Paul also has pulmonary hypertension. The group will start on the pitch at Hillsborough at 7pm on Friday March 29 and stop off at the Pulmonary Vascular Disease Unit at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital where both Paul and Josh’s mum Jackie are treated, to present the initial donation of £10,000. They will then trek across the Peak District through the night to reach
the bet365 stadium in time for the 3pm kick-off. This will be fourth time Mark has completed the 17-hour trek, and the second time in a year after the group walked from Stoke to Sheffield in September for the reverse fixture at Hillsborough. Former Republic of Ireland footballer Liam Lawrence, who played for Stoke between 2007 and 2011, will be joining the group along the walk. Symptoms of PH typically involve breathlessness, fatigue, black-outs and swelling around the ankles, arms and stomach. The condition affects the ability to carry out basic tasks and get around. The PHA UK is the only charity in the UK dedicated to supporting the PH community made up of patients, their family and carers and NHS professionals. Your Letters Over two years ago a land management company submitted plans to the Sheffield planning authority to build 93 houses on Hollin Busk in Deepcar. This land is a protected green open space and boarders the locally gifted wooded area of Fox Glen, as well as the green belt.

Your Letters At long last some tram sense It’s good to see (last week’s letters) the Don Valley Railway group coming down to earth, now that either of their tram proposals - a tram on the road or, alternatively, using the freight railway line are confirmed to be as prohibitively expensive as anyone easily could have guessed. £200 million! Even a standard rail job it turns out would be £20 million. Sensibly settling on a rail-mounted halfhourly ‘shuttle’ service for a mere £2million, it’s one-hundredth of the cost of the proposals with which they’ve hitherto run.
I know that the application came as a shock to local people, and it is no surprise that over 500 people raised objections! Concerns were raised that the rural location of the site makes walking to local amenities very difficult because of the steep hill. It is also argued that the location suffers from poor public transport links and that the application contravenes Sheffield Council policy that this area should be “protected open countryside”. I too share these concerns and am calling on the authority to refuse permission for the development. This site has always been a highly valued part of the local countryside and I would hope that such a huge number of people raising objections cannot be ignored.

Local people do not have a problem with housing developments being built in our area but we expect them to follow the council’s strategy of regenerating Brownfield sites. We have a number of such sites in our area that would benefit from regeneration, and I want to see these sites used instead of protected green spaces that once gone would be lost forever. The decision on whether the development goes ahead or not will be taken at a planning meeting in Sheffield Town Hall soon. The Town Council and local people are united in our objection to this development and I will of course keep readers upto-date as to the outcome of the hearing. Julie Grocutt, Mayor of Stocksbridge and Labour candidate for Stocksbridge and Upper Don
Miner’s Welfare Building
In response to Cllr David Ogle’s allegations last Even that relatively small cost is still too high for week that there is a plan to sell the Miner’s Welfare, the scheme likely to be approved, but at least it’s I want to put the record straight and categorically realistic. say that this will not happen. The problem of not carrying on beyond Deepcar, because of the different ownership of the line beyond to Fox Valley, surely needs to be got round - especially with the revised plans for the housing estate off Station Road blocking any substantial access to a new station.
As a West Ecclesfield city councillor I would vehemently oppose any effort to do so, and I know that my Labour colleagues feel exactly the same.
It’s a shame that Cllr Ogle has chosen to make this accusation and imply otherwise. As a Parish councillor he should be talking to his Parish If it came to Fox Valley, Dransfield surely would get colleagues about this instead of making wild on board. With the terminus at Fox Valley, a simple allegations which have no basis in truth. halt at Deepcar would then suffice, with no need I think Cllr Ogle does some sterling work so it’s a for a bus link there. shame to see he is unnecessarily worrying residents The necessary attendant resurrection of the about this. Just to put the matter straight - there are ‘clipper’ circular bus to get people from the valley no plans to sell the Miners Welfare’s building or to floor (whether from Deepcar or Fox Valley) up the pass on the lease. hillside is anyway how the buses currently should run instead of all buses to/from Sheffield going Cllr Ogle should also be aware that if there were any plans, these would have to be put out for public round the houses. consultation to definitively give local residents the To make the scheme work, though, SYPTE surely say on the matter. would need to axe all buses from Sheffield to ensure Cllr Adam Hurst, sufficient rail passenger numbers.Opposition from Labour Councillor for West Ecclesfield Stagecoach because of the impact on tram usage to/from Middlewood likely would be temporary, given the probable mothballing of the trams in the Wharncliffe Side Community face of the huge £250 million investment required Centre shortly to keep them on the road. Something has to be done about the appalling public transport service to/from Sheffield - whether the ridiculously round-the-houses 57 or the bustram link delay and detour of the tram - and the DVR group is now making a positive contribution to trying to sort this. Steve Moxon
Stocksbridge Mayor opposes housing development on protected open countryside I want to reassure Deepcar residents that your town councillors are doing everything we can to protect green spaces from unwanted housing developments.

A shady garden can be a beautiful retreat is you plan properly and give it a little bit of TLC. Shady gardens need character as well as beauty. Shade is seldom constant. It varies according to the season and time of day, so the first step to understanding what will grow in a shady spot is to observe how the light changes. Choose shrubs for year-round interest, including blossoms for spring, flowers for summer, berries and vibrant leaf colour for autumn and evergreens for winter. Many shade gardens are at their best in spring when bulbs, primroses, anemones and hellebores carpet the ground beneath deciduous trees before the leaf canopy opens and excludes the light. Think big ... the low light-levels in shady gardens make things appear smaller so make borders deep, paved areas generous and containers as big as space will allow - planted boldly with one or two plant varieties.

Go for living walls – particularly in an urban garden. Trellis can disguise unsightly brickwork and fences and gives a feeling of depth whilst variegated ivy planted with different types of clematis – both of which are shade tolerant – can create stunning evergreen boundaries. Careful pruning of trees and shrubs that have grown too large into a more open shape will make a shady space much easier to manage. It will let in more light, allow rain to penetrate the soil more easily and create better growing conditions. But remember, trees and shrubs re–grow over time so they need to be cut back on a regular basis. White flowers and silver foliage bring glamour to a shady garden. Many such plants will thrive with little or no sun, as do variegated varieties. Urban gardens benefit from their protected mircro-climate being a few degrees warmer so exotic-looking architectural plants such as cordylines or Fatsia japonica can be planted. Try mixing different leaf textures and shapes of classic white flowers such as
hydrangeas or tobacco plants with the stylish black Ophiopogon. Hostas are very happy in a shady place and do well in pots. As mentioned before, always go for the largest containers possible. Plants grow well in naturally porous terracotta, which ages beautifully and adds warmth.. Bay, box, holly and yew will all be happy in shade, as long as they are not underneath dripping branches. As with all garden containers, make sure you provide adequate drainage holes. April gets the gardening season off to a flying start, so here’s what experts suggest for this month’s gardening ‘to do’ list: Spring is finally in evidence as daffodils and flowering trees start to bloom. Expect the inevitable April showers this month but with sunny days too, when you can turn your attention to the lawn. It’s an exciting month, with indoor-sown seeds well into growth, and it’s also time to start sowing outdoors. Just watch out for frosts. RHS Spring is a busy time of the year for gardener. It’s a good idea to keep on top of newly emerging weeds - this eliminates competition and ensures your plants have enough space and light to thrive. Grass will grow rapidly in the next few months, be sure to mow once a week but don’t cut too short. Kew Gardens Spring is here and the garden is waking from its winter slumber. Bulbs should be in full flow now, their bright flowers enough to cheer up any dull day. Time to get started on that lawn for a lush green carpet all year long. David Domoney

Notes on the plans, designed by Static 1, read: “To ensure that the development is sensitive to the local area and existing residents, we have carefully considered the site’s surroundings when designing the proposed store. “New houses will line Thorncliffe View to complement the feel of this quiet residential area. The design of these properties will fit in with the style of housing already in this locality. “The food store is located on the remainder of the site behind the new houses and facing the direction of Thorncliffe Lane with shopfronts facing Lane End. “Customers arriving by car would access the store via a new junction off Lane End.
The site can be accessed on foot from both Thorncliffe Lane and Lane End. “This will enhance the accessibility for local residents who can easily walk to the store from local neighbourhoods. “Ample parking will be provided so there would be no issue with future shoppers parking on surrounding residential streets to access the store. “The food store is single story with a shallow pitched roof to minimise any potential visual impact and to fit in generally with the existing street scene massing. “A great deal of thought has also been given to the treatment of boundaries to minimise any noise and disturbance. “Landscape buffer planting is provided to all perimeters of the development to enhance visual amenity.”

Headingley were gifted two tries at the end of the first half after handling errors and miscommunication handed Headingley the ball, and two scores, with very little pressure developed from the away side. Will Burns was tackling back to his best, Sam Eaden and
Adam Wilson, in only their second matches for the club, were playing well and Joe Littlewood was reliable and directed his team capably in the middle of the pitch. Robert Harden and Max Blackburn ran hard throughout, with Harden particularly taking hard yards from the wing and putting in tackles across the pitch. Joseph Tipping will have a few nightmares about the dropped ball when he appeared to have charged through the Headingley defence, evaded tackles and sprinted for the line. Increasingly, the generosity of Sheffield’s errors and gifts gave Headingley respite. In the second half, again Hawks piled on the pressure. Spencer Poppleton came close, Hawks appeared to have the game for the taking. They equalised through debutant Morgan Brown, after a superb interception and
80 metre run that showed a clean pair of heels to Headingley’s back line. Wilson had an easy conversion and momentum was with Sheffield. Yet the team buckled after penalties and bad luck saw everything bounce Headingley’s way. Tap downs from kicks, knock ons and weariness saw Headingley pick up easy tries in the last 15 minutes. Harry Buxton was denied a try by an excellent defensive tackle and the game fizzled out with Sheffield somewhat puzzled at the scoreline. If ever there was a match that showed how important it is to take your chances, this was it. A positive, aggressive approach worked wonders when Hawks employed it. With a full squad in action as we move forward we’re sure Hawks will find their form for both halves.

CHURCH IN NARROW DEFEAT IN FRONT OF BUMPER CROWD PENISTONE Church narrowly lost out to fellow title contenders Worksop Town on Saturday, in front of a whopping crowd of 1,628 – the highest ever recorded in the Toolstation NCEL Premier Division. Church had a mountain to climb after Worksop, who sit at the top of
the table, scored twice in the opening 14 minutes. First it was Craig Mitchell in the sixth minute and then Matthew Sykes in the 14th who both hit wonderful shots to put the Tigers two up. But Church never gave up and responded brilliantly. Unfortunately, they couldn’t find the goals to get
them back in the game, although Andy Ring did score a consolation in the 80th minute. Manager Ian Richards said: “Credit to Worksop in that they scored early. Two world class strikes then defended very well. It’s a results business – people call it the business end – and they got the result.
“I’m extremely proud of our players’ performance. I’m extremely proud of the way they reacted to going 2-0 down early in front of a big crowd. I’m extremely proud of the football that we tried to play and the way they conducted themselves. I think, if people are being honest, we were the better team over the 90 minutes in terms of performance but it’s a hollow victory because it’s all
about three points at this point and that puts them with one and a half hands on that title. “We’ve got seven games left and we’ve got to try to win seven and see. Finish as high as we possibly can because these players deserve to do that and deserve to get that recognition of hopefully finishing top two.”
More success for Penistone on busy weekend IT was a very busy weekend for Penistone Footpath Runners as they took part in events stretching from Birkenhead to Hull via Edale and Langsett. Penistone entered two teams at the Northern road relay championships in Birkenhead. The men’s team consisted of 12 runners and the women’s team six. The men came home in 52nd in a high quality field featuring some of the North’s best athletes. The women finished in 35th and qualified for the national finals in Sutton Park next month. Elsewhere club records were falling a plenty. Those preparing for the marathon season ventured to Hull to compete in the East Hull 20. Gareth won the race and shattered the club record for 20 miles in the process. His time of 1-52-16 was nearly 10 minutes better than the previous mark. Bill Philips in the same race broke the over-70 men’s record in 2-3953 and Rob Davies broke the over-50 men’s record in 2-2300. In the Peak District Phil Hinchliffe took on the chal-
lenging Edale Skyline fell race which is 21 miles and takes in some of the toughest climbs in the area such as Win Hill. Phil completed the course in a very quick 3-3309.
Keith Gordon broke the over70 men’s record for seven miles at Garstang in 57-20, trimming seven minutes off the previous record. On the track Lee Hopkins flew round one lap in 66-5 to claim the club’s over-45 men’s record for 400m. Julian Williams had a strong run to claim 4th place at the Langsett 10k trail race in a time of 48-32. Just up the road from Langsett a number of Penistone runners took on the Windmills 10k in windy conditions. First back for Penistone was Andrew Heppenstall in 36-39 closely followed by veteran Martin Ball in 36-42. Martin was first over-45 man. Becky West completed the Leeds and Liverpool half marathon Canter in 2-01-44. New member Bryan Harrod guided a visually impaired runner around the Wakefield 10k, finishing in 44-28.

BACK-TO-BACK WINS BOOST STEELS SURVIVAL HOPES Spalding Utd 0-1 Stocksbridge PS
Report: Roger Gissing STOCKSBRIDGE Park Steels have given their survival chances a shot in the arm with two wins in the space of a week. After fighting off a late comeback, they took three points with a 3-2 win over Gresley in their midweek fixture, before taking a narrow victory over Spalding on Saturday. With both sides desperate for points, a magic moment from Morris secured a win for the
Steels. In a game littered with errors and little to cheer it was good to see a light at the end of the tunnel. Danny Frost went off with an injury early in the first half, just as he was starting to show some promise up front. But Morris scored his first goal for the club in style and earned the three points. Stocksbridge play Loughborough Dynamo on at home on Saturday with a 3pm kick off.

were in for a hard game. The Steels defence held out until the hour mark when Gawber took the lead. Rodney Bruce then suffered an ankle injury and had to leave the field and with all the subs used up, Steels were down to 10 men.
They battled well but Gawber put the game to bed with two more goals. This is a difficult spell for Steels who next face thirdplaced Swinton Athletic before a trip to second-placed Dodworth FC but it will be a good test for the young players who have now dropped out of the top four for the first time.
