FAMILIES PAY TRIBUTE TO CRASH VICTIMS THE families of a Chesterfield couple who died following a collision on the A616 Stocksbridge bypass have released a picture of them. Ben Rybka, 38, and his wife Amy Rybka, 30, were riding a motorcycle along the A616 on Thursday March 21 when they collided with an articulated lorry. Ben was sadly pronounced dead at the scene and his wife, Amy Rybka, was taken to hospital, where she later died on Wednesday March 27. Ben’s family paid tribute to the couple in a statement. “Our family are heartbroken following the loss of our loving son Ben Rybka and wonderful daughter in law Amy following their tragic accident on Thursday March 21.”
Amy’s family added: “Due to a tragic accident, it is with deep sadness that we mourn the passing of our newly married children, Amy and Ben Rybka.” This is an extremely difficult time for both families. They are being supported by specialist officers and they ask that their privacy is respected. An investigation into their death continues and officers are keen to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the collision, especially any motorists travelling along the A616 who may hold dashcam footage. Please call 101 quoting incident number 261 of 21 March 2019.

FROM DEATH’S DOOR TO INDIA FOR FORMER PUB LANDLORD A FORMER pub landlord who survived a murder attempt six years ago has turned his life around and is to travel to India in the capacity of a motivational speaker. Roger Cheetham was returning home after walking his dog on June 9 2013 when he saw three masked men, armed with weapons, waiting for him. They beat him severely and Roger has no doubt that they were out to kill him, although he still doesn’t know who they were or what their motive was. “You drive yourself mad thinking about it,” Roger told Look Local. “I was in hospital a long time and I thought about it a lot. I was the landlord of the Bassett pub in Fox Hill at the time, I’d worked a shift that day but it had passed without incident.
“It wasn’t a robbery as they didn’t take my money or phone - they didn’t ask for anything. You have to just draw a line under it eventually.” Roger, who was 43 at the time, sustained fractures to his legs, ankles, hands and face resulting in months in hospital and lifelong injuries. But now, aged 49, Roger is using the experience to be a positive influence to others through motivational speaking. “I’ve turned adversity into opportunity,” Roger says. “Initially, I found that sharing my story with medical staff had a cathartic effect. I soon realised that it’s not about me, but helping others.
ger, positive and improved version of yourself.” It’s a message that Roger has spoken of in schools and business networks. But this month he flies out to New Delhi, India, for his first international appearance at the Women’s Economic Forum. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Forum and, coincidentally, the 25th anniversary of Roger’s marriage to wife, Claire. Roger is relishing the opportunity of speaking abroad. “There’s going to be up to 2,000 people in the audience – mainly females – and I hope that my talk will help them find their resilience and use it to empower themselves. I can’t wait.”
“I want to tell people my message of resilience – no matter how dark things get, not only can you get through it, you can emerge from it as a stron-
PUPILS WIN AWARD AND DONATE TO CHARITY
A GROUP of children from Windmill Hill Primary School have taken part in the St Luke’s BizKids’ fundraising competition. They have won the Enterprise Award for the best presentation and for achieving all of the BizKids’ objectives, such as financial literacy, communication and perseverance. Thirteen schools across Sheffield took part and only one school could win this award. Year Two teacher Hannah Crossland told Look Local:
“As a school, we are incredibly proud of the children and their fundraising efforts, particularly this year as they have doubled their fundraising total and raised £913 for St Luke’s Hospice.” A representative of St Luke’s visited the school on Wednesday March 20 to present the children with a trophy for their achievement. Yorkshire Bank in Chapeltown matched the pupils’ fundraising which brought the final total to £1,826.60.
The BizKids’ judges said: “We were amazed at all of the creative products and fundraising ideas Windmill Hill had. “They showed great initiative and we were impressed at how well everyone worked together as a team.” Some of the fundraising activities included a bun sale, Christmas crafts, superhero dress up day and penalty shootout. These ran between October and March.
HIGH PRAISE FOR LOCAL PRIMARY SCHOOL THE Secretary of State for Education, Rt Hon Damian Hinds MP, and Minister of State for School Standards, Rt Hon Nick Gibb MP, have congratulated Oughtibridge Primary School for their high standards – putting them in the top 3% of the country’s schools in terms of progress between Key Stage One and Key Stage Two. In a letter to the school’s head, Jim Dugmore, they wrote: “We would like to congratulate you, your staff and your pupils on the very high level of progress that pupils in your school demonstrated in the reading, writing and mathematics Key Stage Two assessments last year. “Your school’s results, as published on December 13, show progress scores of 4.1, 3.1 and 4.4 in English reading, writing and mathematics respectively. This means that in terms of the progress your pupils make between Key Stage One and the end of Key Stage Two, your school is amongst the top 3% of schools in England.
“We want to equip every child with the fluency in reading, writing and mathematics necessary to prepare them for a successful secondary education and beyond, and your school has provided this. “Thank you for producing such high standards through your hard work and professionalism, and congratulations again to you and your staff for all you have achieved.” Dave Cates, the Chair of Governers for the school, commented in a letter to parents: “It’s always a privilege to be a governor at Oughtibridge Primary School but from time to time something happens to remind me just how fortunate we are to be part of such a fantastic school that gives so much to our community. “This is a significant achievement and on behalf of the Governors, I want to thank Mr Dugmore and the whole staff for their continued hard work and investment in our children’s education.”

TEEN SEEKS TO BECOME YOUNGEST COUNCILLOR IN PARISH HISTORY ON May 2, voters could create history in the local elections. This year, James Swift, aged just 19, is standing as a party politically independent candidate for the Chapeltown ward of the Ecclesfield Parish Council (EPC). James said: “The Parish Council is the first line of local government, and even though many of the councillors have experience, we need a younger view and voice. I may be only 19, but I am passionate about helping people of all ages, and to give a view point that looks forward, not just back. “For our local council to become relevant to as many people as possible, it’s time to inject some new positive, youthful energy into our council.” James fully supports projects that help the 50+ age range, but says he is dismayed at the lack of support for families and bewildered by the non-existent
support for teenagers within the council due to a lack of any type of plan. James goes on to say: “It’s clear to me an attitude exists within the Parish Council that it’s always been done this way, well things move on. Funding needs to be spent wisely so there a long-term benefit, not just a quick fix. Currently, money is not being spent in the right areas. “Funding needs to be split equally and allocated across the three general areas - teens, families and over 50s.” James acknowledged that his lack of experience may be questioned. In response he highlights the results of the Hoey Investigation which listed 29 major failings of the council. James says: “If the current councillors can get so much wrong, I would really have to put some serious effort in to making it any worse!”
James’ father, Cllr Paul Swift, was the first co-opted Parish councillor in 27 years and has spent the last eight months as a parish councillor. James says: “My dad’s my mentor, but not my boss, he brought me up to be fair, independent and to do what’s right, regardless of opposition. “I’ve been told by many that I’m wasting my time putting my name forward as a candidate for my area as people only vote for parties rather than individuals. However, I hope that people see that it’s not parties that change areas for the better, it’s the people that look after them. “Party politics is getting in the way of decision making and progression in our community, we need more individuals like myself that strive to benefit the community they serve, not the political party they belong to.”
Owls wise up to latest frauds
A GROUP of men and women, known as the Wise Old Owls, have received vital information on the latest scams and how to protect themselves. The retired Sheffield Wednesday supporters were recently visited by Fraud Protect Officer Andy Foster, who delivered a presentation on the latest frauds, with a focus on Authorised Push Payment (APP) fraud. Andy explained to over 140 members that APP fraud is when a customer authorises payment directly to a scammer, often posting as their
banks ‘fraud team’ or those posing as police officers. Recently released UK finance figures have shown that APP fraud cost customers £228million from personal accounts and £126million from business scams in 2018, with over 84,600 APP scams taking place that year. Andy then went on to talk about crime prevention and personal safety advice. John Preen, Chairman of the Wise Old Owls, wrote to Andy the day after the presentation, thanking him. He said: “I would like to thank you on behalf of the
Wise Old Owls for the excellent talk provided once again to our members. “The content of your talk was spot on and many were talking about it after it concluded, remarking on what a wonderful insight it was in to stopping, or not making it easy for fraudsters and burglars for example, to con us in our dwindling years. “Once more, many thanks Andy for your fabulous contribution.” For advice on APP scams and others, please visit actionfraud.police.uk. MAN WITH PRAM GIVEN FREEDOM OF THE CITY
THE man with the pram, John Burkhill, is being awarded Sheffield’s highest honour, the Freedom Of The City. John, who has raised nearly a half a million pounds for Macmillan over the past 30 years and has vowed to raise more than a million, will join only a handful of people to have been given the honour, including Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill and Nelson Mandela. John is famous for tirelessly walking the streets of Sheffield for a great cause, and is a regular feature at the city’s half marathons, 10ks and other events. For more than 30 years John, who has recently celebrated his 80th birthday, has put his heart and soul into raising money for Macmillan. He has taken part in over 1,000 organised races with his distinctive green wig and pram, braving the hills of Sheffield and beyond in all kinds of weather. The Freedom of the City is an honour bestowed the council upon a valued member of the community, or upon a visiting celebrity or dignitary. Although the title of “freeman” confers no special privileges, it will allow John the freedom to parade through the city and is a very public recognition of John’s years of charity fundraising.

MUD MADNESS FOR A GOOD CAUSE AT HESLEY WOOD NEARLY 200 people spent the day charging round a mud bath of an assault course at Hesley Wood in Chapeltown on Saturday. The MudMadness event was organised as a fundraiser for Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice in Dinnington. The hospice’s head of fundraising, Helen Mower, said: “We are so grateful to everyone who had fun in the mud on behalf of the children and families we support.” The dream of Bluebell Wood began in 1998, with the vision to help families who wanted an alternative to hospital care. Fundraising started when 11year-old Richard and his mum wanted him to pass away at home.
In 2004, the £4.5 million needed to begin building was raised and on September 19 2008, the doors were opened to the first families. Since then, hundreds of children from across South Yorkshire, North Derbyshire, North Nottinghamshire and parts of North Lincolnshire have benefitted from the hospice. It’s helped tired mums and dads get some much needed respite; looked after brothers and sisters who are feeling angry, lonely or confused; and been there for families during the last moments of their child’s life. Donations are vital to the hospice and have paid for every day trip, and funded every session of sensory play.
RAIL REPLACEMENT TO RESUME ON SUPERTRAM NETWORK SOUTH YORKSHIRE TRANSPORT EXECUTIVE are calling for patience when essential works to extend the lifespan and futureproof the Supertram network resume in April for the second phase of the current three yearlong project.
The next phase of the essential works to replace 22 kilometres of worn Supertram tracks will start on Good Friday, April 19, and is due to finish by the end of August. This year’s works will be split into five areas mainly around Shalesmoor and Hillsborough sections of the tram network. “These rail replacement works, a project started in 2013 and resumed last year, are essential to extend the lifespan of one of the best loved modes of transport in the region, which began operating 25 years ago. The new rail will give passengers a better Supertram experience - improving comfort and reducing noise in areas where
tracks are currently worn”, said Tim Taylor, Director of Customer Services at South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE).
about tram replacement bus routes and frequency will be available at supertram.com or via twitter @SCSupertram and in leaflets on trams.
“Once again, we’re asking customers to be patient while the work progresses. We appreciate it will affect passengers, in particular Malin Bridge and Middlewood residents, who will not have a tram service for around four and a half months while the works take place this year. We will, though, continue to work closely with our partners, Stagecoach Supertram, to minimise its impact as much as possible, making sure replacement buses will keep passengers moving”.
Works on Area One, between Hillsborough Corner and Middlewood Road, are set to start over the Easter Bank Holiday weekend, affecting both Blue and Yellow routes, which will run a revised timetable from Meadowhall/Halfway, before terminating early at Hillsborough tram stop. Purple and Tram-train routes will not be affected during this period.
SYPTE will keep customers informed about the works, bus and traffic diversions via its website travelsouthyorkshire.com/RailReplacement and posters at affected tram stops. Passengers will be able to find up-to-date information via twitter @TSYalerts or via Traveline on 01709 515151. Information
Between Friday April 19 and Monday April 22, works will focus on Hillsborough Corner. Replacement bus service Y1 will operate throughout the Bank Holiday weekend on a circular route from Middlewood Park & Ride to Malin Bridge. Passengers can transfer from rail replacement services to tram services via a bus stop at Holme Lane, a short walk from Hillsborough tram stop.
From Tuesday April 23 until Sunday May 26, works will be focused on the section between Hillsborough and Hillsborough Park tram stops. To minimise passenger disruptions, B1 shuttle bus service will operate between Malin Bridge and Hillsborough Interchange and Y1 replacement bus service will operate from Hillsborough Interchange to Middlewood, via Middlewood Road.
From Monday May 27 to Sunday June 2, works are moving to the outbound rail on Middlewood Road adjacent to Dudley Road. The B1 shuttle bus will carry on operating between Malin Bridge and Hillsborough Interchange but, this time, Y1 will run from Hillsborough Interchange to Middlewood via Worrall Road due to traffic restrictions. Replacement bus timetables and route maps are currently available at travelsouthyorkshire.com/ RailReplacement and will soon be available in leaflets on trams.
Tram frequency and times will change on the Yellow and Blue routes throughout the Area 1 works to allow more time for trams to turn at Hillsborough. The Y1 and B1 replacement bus services will match the frequency of the trams throughout the day. James Stewart, Head of Customer Service at Stagecoach Supertram said: “We’d like to extend our thanks and gratitude to our customers for their patience during the upcoming work. We understand that this may cause some disruption, but the work is essential and will help to sustain the network for years to come.” Malin Bridge and Middlewood Park & Ride sites will remain open and will be made free of charge during the works on Area 1. Customers will just need to buy their travel tickets on board the replacement bus service.

It’s not too late to make a Will... Hello, I’m Jane Bowland, your local Estate Planning Consultant of 13 years experience. I am an expert in helping people arrange their Wills, Trusts, Lasting Powers of Attorney and Pre-paid Funeral Plans. Along with my colleague Haworth Ward-Drummond we specialise in helping all kinds of people gain peace of mind by providing professional advice, but with a personal touch. We offer a FREE consultation without obligation for anybody who would like to know more about any of the following:
• Making a basic Will • Setting up Lasting Powers of Attorney • Protecting your home for future generations • Pre-paid Funeral Plans We know that planning for the future is a very personal matter. Not everyone is able or wants to travel to an appointment in town to sort out their affairs. We can visit you at a convenient time in the privacy and comfort of your own home to discuss your unique circumstances.
A visit and consultation is completely free and you are under no obligation to do anything. If you decide to make any arrangements you can be safe in the knowledge that all our professional services and work are fully insured and we are members of the Society of Will Writers, so all our clients are assured of the
highest standards of conduct at all times. All our clients (and their families) that we have helped in the past have been very happy with our services and tell us they have gained great peace of mind knowing that they have sorted everything out.
Jane came to see my parents to help them protect the family home. She really made us all feel at ease, especially my parents. We had no idea what we could do to protect Mum and Dad. Having set up trusts and Lasting Power of Attorney’s, Mum and Dad can get on with their lives without worrying, knowing everything is now in place. Thank you Jane! Mrs Boyle and family, Ecclesfield

Mr Dransfield’s total investment into Fox Valley, so though desirable, it would not be cheap. Even if difficulties of ownership and quality of track are resolved between Deepcar and Stocksbridge, the extra distance covered, and physical constraints giving a much lower line speed mean that a half hourly return service with a single train set is not possible without significant additional expense. Hence our objection seeking clarification on access at Deepcar Station.

I was elected to give High Green a voice at the table, As was Cllr Gary Lakin, the Lib Dem/Labour Grenoside coalition refused to listen. During the past four years, three councillors have resigned out of frustration at the EPC’s dysfunction, four have quit party politics and joined us as independent councillors. The Hoey investigation backed the independent stance 100%. Your council, your money, your choice to vote and how. As always, it’s up to you.

This needs to end before our EPC can do what it was created for, that being to improve life quality for our communities as a whole. We independent councillors forced a six month investigation that agreed with all I’ve just wrote.

The free Functional Skills courses are offered from Entry Level to Level 2 for anyone aged 19 and over. But the overall winner for the season was M. Siddall (16) who won the league with 55 points, well clear of J. Moss (22) in second place and 51 points. L. Wright (14) came in third overall with 39 points. With the weather being so helpful through the winter, the number of Dragons who have played regularly in the competition has increased significantly. The main Gent’s Winter Cup also concluded on Saturday with the final round being won by Steve Cain (15) with a season best score of 45 points. L. Hydes (12) came in a distant second with 39 points, the same score as R. Haythorne (17), M. Taylor (19) and J. Slodyczak (15) but who all had lower scores on the back nine.
It was fitting that Steve Cain posted a winning score for the final round because he is the overall champion for the season. Steve said in the clubhouse afterwards: “It was one of those rounds where I could put the ball where I wanted to on nearly every hole.” Steve is a worthy champion for the Winter Cup. The ladies’ section began its competitive season with a Stableford competition. Margaret Pearson (26) was the overall winner with 34 points. Ladies captain, Alison Sedgwick (33), was second with 32 points and Ann Whitfield (28) came in third with 29 points.
TWO WINS IN A WEEK FOR CHURCH
PENISTONE Church got back to winning ways in the Toolstation NCEL Premier Division, with two wins in a week. On Wednesday, they had to come from behind to beat Albion Sports, eventually winning 4-3 with a late Ash Ellis goal. Sam Scrivens gave Church the lead after just two minutes but Luke Aldrich made it 1-1 on 36 minutes. Towering centre half Brett Lovell restored the lead just two minutes later, with Church going into half time 2-1 up. A brace inside 10 minutes from Lamin Janneh saw Albion go 3-2 up but Tom Brennan made it 3-3 on 71 minutes. And Ellis had the final say, firing home on 88 minutes. It was a more convincing win on Saturday, beating Athersley Recreation 4-1 away from home.

Nathan Keightley bagged a brace with Sam Scrivens and Brett Lovell getting on the score sheet again too. Athersley’s consolation came from the penalty spot with Lee Garside slotting home.

Crunch week for Stocksbridge Rugby
Local Sport SEMI FINAL HEARTBREAK FOR WAR MEMORIAL LADIES Oughtibridge WM Ladies 1 Leicester City Womens Dev 2 (AET) THE much anticipated East Midlands League Cup semi final didn’t disappoint as two evenly match teams slugged it out for 120 minutes. Ultimately, for Oughtibridge, it was not meant to be as Leicester sub Angel Tapper darted through in the last seconds of extra time to snatch it for the away team, sparking an over-exuberant pitch invasion from the away bench to rub their noses in it. But this was a tremendous performance from Oughtibridge, missing captain and top scorer Kathryn Mudge, they sill carried the game to top of the table Leicester with Millie Kenyon and Lauren Turner a real threat going forward and it was Kenyon who broke the deadlock on 25 minutes with a typical mazy run and cool finish to make it 1-0.
THIS week will see the climax of the rugby season for Stocksbridge with a mid week cup game away at Barnsley Rugby, followed by the Shield Trophy decider also away at Burley Rugby on Saturday.
A win for either team will see them crowned champions, with the Leedsbased side starting as slight favourites. Stocksbridge narrowly edged a thriller earlier in the tournament, so both sides will know what to expect from each other.

TIGERS DIG DEEP TO BEAT SCUNNY SHEFFIELD team boss Simon Stead admitted he was delighted with his side as they “dug deep” to dump Scunthorpe. The Tigers overcame a succession of gremlins to finally overcome the stubborn Scorpions 49-41 at Owlerton in the Championship Shield last night. Ty Proctor and Kasper Andersen were hit by exclusions and crashes and Scunthorpe took advantage to get back in the meeting. But Stead was happy with the way his newlook side ground out a good result. He said: “It’s never easy against Scunthorpe, they always go well round Owlerton.
The hosts looked fairly comfortable up to half time but with Chloe Rodgers carrying a knock she had to come off at the interval.
“But we had a lot of problems and I think we handled the setbacks quite well as the meeting went on. The boys had to dig deep at times.
With the Oughtibridge back four re-organising, full back Lauren Bartle appeared from nowhere to steer home the equalizer on 50 minutes and after that both defences remained on top as it became a midfield scrap.
“It’s the perfect way to start the team season to be fair. We’ve had a proper test and they came through it with flying colours.
Extra time was more of the same with both sides running out of stream until the last minute agony for the War Memorial Ladies, who can take the confidence gained from this excellent performance and cup run into their remaining league games, starting this Sunday at home to Ollerton Town Ladies with a 2pm kick off.
Head coach Rhys Keenan is in a bullish mood. “Some teams have nothing to play for at this stage of the season and everyone looks forward to their holidays. But not us, we have two trophies in our sight and will be going all out to win them both. The
“Everyone will be talking about Drew Kemp, naturally. His paid 14 is a brilliant debut. There will be huge expectation now for him, but he’ll deal with it. He’s good a good family around him and he’s very level-headed.”
But two controversial starting exclusions for Proctor and a nasty flip at the start for Andersen and suddenly Scunny were back in with a shout and just four down after Heat 6.
However, Proctor came good to with Heat 14 with Kemp and that ensured the points for the Tigers on an excellent night of racing at Owlerton.

Hawks draw with Dewsbury Sheffield Hawks 30-30 Dewsbury Celtic
AFTER being comprehensively outplayed by the Celtics away from home, Sheffield Hawks played their game of the season so far home at Niagara. The Dewsbury side opened the scoring against the run of play, a pattern repeated throughout the match. Hawks’ response was immediate and rocked the Celtics with three Sheffield tries scored before half time, inspired by the aggressive and hard charging of Will Burns and Harry Fullelove-Kennedy. Hawks punched back hard and managed to keep Dewsbury quiet, eventually forcing a knock on. Ed Measures was immense in every contact and scored a typical try, touching down with three Dewsbury Celtic players hanging off him.
The second half saw tries exchanged throughout. Tom Kerr scored in the corner, with Poppleton kicking a superb conversion from wide out left.
Joe Littlewood scored after superb work from the whole team. Littlewood, supported by the industrious and willing Sam North, had
a superb game and used the ball intelligently. What impressed the crowd was the defensive effort from the entire squad. Max Blackburn ran dirty, hard yards throughout. Tom Kerr, Robert Harden and Morgan Brown all made superb defensive tackles saving Hawks from conceding points. Harry Fullelove-Kennedy was everywhere and made an impressive debut tackling and running hard throughout. The last try was a solo effort by the Dewsbury centre that saw the Celtics equalise with the last touch of the match. Overall Sheffield deserved the win as this was a brilliant team performance throughout.

On a glorious spring day and with the Look Local Stadium bathed in sunshine, both teams worked hard to gain the initiative during the early exchanges. Steels gave away an unnecessary free kick near the corner flag on 10 minutes. The resulting dead ball delivery was whipped in hard, low and to the front post where Carl Sibson, the Loughborough centre back lost his marker and stooped low with a glancing header that shot past the helpless David Robson in the Steels goal. But what a response by Steels just a minute later – the industrious Luke Mang-
ham drove into the box down the left side as play was built up after the restart crossing the ball low into the path of Alex Wiles, who expertly swept the ball home at the near post, left footed from six yards. After such an eventful start to the match, the game settled and became an attractive proposition as the teams tried to get the ball down and play.
good work down the right from Wiles and Lemon. The ball was delivered perfectly to the far stick where Coleman chest controlled and fired in a right footed volley that Charlie Taylor, the away keeper, couldn’t get a hand to.

Ryan Robbins, the quick forward, latched onto a loose ball on halfway and drove hard towards the home goal. Robson very nearly stopped the ball with a great reaction save to his left but couldn’t prevent the ball trickling over the line.
Loughborough continued to press but it was pretty much direct and lacked choreography, although a few last ditch tackles were the order of the day for the Steels back line, one in particular from Fielding stopped a certain goal from 10 yards out.
Steels responded with high energy and stretched the away side’s defences on numerous occasions but couldn’t find a way through until Coleman popped up at the far post after
Steels can be delighted with another three points as they edge towards safety. Hard work, endeavour and a collective will to win attitude has certainly helped turn the corner for a buoyant and resilient Steels outfit.
