FRAUDSTER JAILED FOR SEVEN YEARS
AN ECCLESFIELD woman who conned vulnerable adults out of almost £1million is now serving seven years behind bars. Former care worker Diana Turner used the money she siphoned from her ten victims, who required daily care, to buy houses and numerous high performance cars over a period of ten years. Turner, 53, was employed as an assistant and care worker at a complex in Sheffield, housing residents with various vulnerabilities. Her job was to provide dayto-day care, however in 2006 Turner became more heavily involved in the running of the business when the owner was forced to take time off due to sickness. During this time, Turner manipulated the banking and
tax credit systems for weekly payments owed to the victims from the council.
Detective Constable James Hughes, the investigating officer, explained: “Over ten years, Turner selfishly and shamelessly took advantage of the vulnerable residents, taking possession and control of their bank cards making regular – and often daily - bank withdrawals to fund the lavish lifestyle she was leading. “She also set up standing orders from the victims’ accounts to subsidise that lifestyle, which saw her buying a static caravan worth almost £60,000, two properties in Dubai, three properties in England and numerous holidays to the Middle East.” In 2016, the business owner returned to work and discovered that some residents’ bank
accounts had been linked to Turner’s. He immediately alerted the police and Turner was dismissed soon after. DC Hughes continued: “During a three-year investigation, extensive banking data was analysed and the full extent of her fraudulent activity became known – it was believed that she took possession of a total of almost £923,000 from the ten vulnerable residents and benefited herself from £640,000. “All of the residents she took advantage of are vulnerable due to their age, mental health, or due to substance abuse issues and many struggle to operate daily functions – they relied on her to get through life every single day and she callously took advantage of that.”

Police seek driver
Continued from front page
Turner, of Ecclesfield Court, has been on trial at Sheffield Crown Court for the last month. On Monday April 1, the jury returned unanimous guilty verdicts to two counts of fraud by position of trust. She was back before Sheffield Crown Court on Wednesday April 3 for sentencing after being remanded by the judge following conviction. She was jailed for a total of seven years. DC Hughes said: “Turner’s assets have now been frozen and we will look to recover these under the Proceeds of Crime Act, with the hope of reimbursing her victims of their financial loss. “The decade of control she exercised over the victims is absolutely abhorrent and I hope that they feel some comfort in knowing she has been jailed. Sadly, one of the elderly victims passed away before the trial and so they never got to see her brought to justice. “To abuse her position as a carer with people who trusted her implicitly is absolutely disgusting and I’m pleased that the jury returned guilty verdicts and she will now serve a basic lifestyle in prison.
SOUTH Yorkshire Police are seeking a driver who may hold crucial information about a fatal crash in Sheffield earlier this year. Samantha Duxbury, 31, died after being hit by a car on Langsett Road near Hillsborough on January 11. Now officers are trying to trace a motorist who may have driven past and witnessed the incident. The driver is thought to have been driving a black Vauxhall Astra, manufactured between 2004 and 2010.
The Astra was travelling on Langsett Road, near the junction with Normandale Road, in the direction of Sheffield city centre when a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction collided with Miss Duxbury, a pedestrian. Only one of the Astra’s lights above the rear registration plate was working, on the right hand side. Detective Chief Inspector Simon Palmer, who is leading the enquiries, said: “We believe that the driver of this vehicle is a key witness to the events which led to this tragic incident.
“We have been carrying out extensive enquiries and this person may hold vital information which would assist us greatly in our investigation. “If you drove past this incident in a car matching the description, I urge you to get in contact with us. If you were travelling on Langsett Road in a black Astra, or a similar vehicle matching the description, around 8.10pm to 8.15pm on Friday 11 January, please contact DC Walker on 01709 443526 or 101 quoting incident number 817 of 11/1/19 !"#$$%#&'( )#*+,-.&./0( 1#2#,*3"

Claire’s sons Jack, 12, and Paul, nine, were both tragically killed in a house fire deliberately started by her estranged husband in October 2014. The harrowing events devastated her and her family; however, she has shown remarkable bravery, by becoming an ambassador for Women’s Aid, the national charity working to end domestic abuse against women and children. Playing a pivotal part in the charity’s Child First campaign, Claire is working tirelessly to stop avoidable child deaths as a result of unsafe child contact with dangerous perpetrators of domestic violence. One part of that is making the family court process safer for women and children survivors of domestic abuse, and, in January 2019, there was a momentous breakthrough when the government published a draft of its domestic abuse bill, a move that will ban abusers from cross-examining victims in the court process.
The panel of Yorkshire Choice contributors, therefore, which included ITV Calendar News presenter, Christine Talbot, who was instrumental in the selection process, were both unanimous and privileged to honour the courageous achievements of Claire and the Child First campaign. Joint YCA Co-Founder, Melanie Malcolm, said: “Claire’s story is one that no parent should ever go through. She is an incredible lady, one that has shown immeasurable strength in her bid to change the way in which domestic abuse is handled in the courts, to ensure that the harrowing events that changed her life forever won’t be repeated again. “Therefore, on behalf of the judges, we are delighted to award Claire this recognition.” Joint YCA Co-Founder, Jo Maltby, added: “The Yorkshire Choice Awards celebrates achievement in Yorkshire, and in its fourth year, we are proud to have recognised the most inspirational individuals and businesses that our county has to offer. Being a ‘people’s choice awards’ shows that Yorkshire
really does thrive on our community heroes, individuals like Claire.” Claire Throssell took to her Facebook page to comment after winning the award. She said: “My goodness what a night....emotional, uplifting and humbling. I’m stunned to say I won an Achievement Award. “I was thinking a lot of thoughts but the words running through my head were of a song performed earlier in the evening and that was let our loved ones’ souls shine a light through you. “So I will continue to keep Jack and Paul’s light shining and be thankful for the joy and love they gave me. “Thank you to everyone who brings their own light to my darkness. After I received my award, I could hear the song Rise being performed and I just thought of how everyone came together to rebuild a house and made it rise like a phoenix from the ashes, which allowed me to kneel amongst them and fulfil a promise I made to my precious gentle boy who had the courage of a lion. “The more I fight for children’s lives and support survivors of domestic abuse, the more Jack’s voice roars.”
Quarry St.
Claire’s story is one that resonated in the Yorkshire community and was also felt across the nation, a story that is beyond comprehension for most.

YORKSHIRE campaigner, Claire Throssell, has been honoured with the Yorkshire Choice Awards’ (YCAs) ‘Special Recognition Award’, following her admirable journey in changing the way the legal system handles domestic abuse and the family court process.

FITNESS FANTATICS COMPLETE 24 HOUR CHALLENGE FOR CHARITY FIT4IT Hybrid Gym in Tankersley committed to an exhausting challenge on Friday, with 15 members and supporters taking part in a 24-hour fit-a-thon. Proceeds went to two charities – Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice and St Luke’s Hospice. Well over £5,000 was raised, although money is still being counted. FIT4IT owner Katie Ford explains: “This was a very unique challenge organised using the ideas of Nikki Outram, Amanda Curwood, Paula Bertra-Lax and myself. “We had kind instructors from all over South Yorkshire coming together to teach a timetable of 20+ classes back-to-back, from circuits, spin, Zumba and Morris dancing to cheerleading. “People popped in and donated £5 for each class they did but 15 of us did non-stop exercising for 24 hours to raise as much money as we for two charities that are close to our hearts. “We did this challenge in memory of Carter Lax and my amazing friend Deborah Holmes, who
was an inspiration to many and a philanthropist herself. “I just want to give a massive shout out to everyone that made this happen. From a crazy idea to an event that blew our socks off! “We worked so hard but it was an amazing experience. People’s kindness and support has blown me away! Their energy and support kept us going. I couldn’t have asked to do it with a better bunch of people - to everyone that donated and supported, thank you so much. Also to the instructors that gave their time - it couldn’t have happened with out you. “Nikki did a great job organising everything, going over and beyond to make it happen.” You can still donate to the two Just Giving pages. See www.justgiving.com/fundraising/amanda-curwood and www.justgiving. com/fundraising/amanda-curwood1 for details. You can keep up to date with the challenge by searching for FIT4IT Hybrid Gym on Facebook.

TWO NEW AWARDS FOR FESTIVAL and the large festival stage. Among those in the Fox Valley line-up, covering 30 slots over the two days, will be Dance Dynamique, Red House, Steel Valley Beacon, Vivacity, Waldershelf Singers, No Identity, Stannington Mixed Choir and Sangeet Asian Women’s Choir whose members are NHS staff. Bolsterstone Male Voice Choir will close the two-day festival at teatime on t
TWO new youth awards will boost Stocksbridge and district’s second Valley Festival this summer which, building on the success of last year’s event, has been expanded to two days of non-stop music. Organisers have been overwhelmed by the huge response from local performers of all ages who want to take part in the festival on Saturday June 15 and Sunday June 16. More than 500 amateur musicians of all ages will be taking part.
In partnership with Fox Valley, the daytime events will be held in combination with the shopping centre’s Food & Music Festival. The Saturday Night Live concert, which was a big hit last year, will be held on the Saturday evening at Stocksbridge High School with a wide range of local performers including Bolsterstone Male Voice Choir - co-presenters of the music festival with Inyerface Arts - Deepcar Brass Band, Thurgoland Community Choir, Bradfield School Jazz Band and the Bus Pass Buskers.
There is an added attraction this year - an extra concert featuring young people at the High School on Saturday afternoon. The Valley Kids Make Music event will feature singers and dancers, including choirs from five junior schools, Happy Hands pre-school group, and young soloists. Local music groups will intersperse with cookery demonstrations and other events at Fox Valley on the Saturday and the Sunday will be entirely devoted to local music, dance and drama groups performing on the bandstand
Proceeds from last year’s festival - the biggest musical event in the district for 80 years - were used to kickstart the Valley Festival Foundation which has already made donations to local schools. This year there is a new award scheme funded by the Dransfield Foundation the charitable offshoot of Dransfield Properties, the owner of Fox Valley shopping centre, which will provide a scholarship for a young music student. In addition, the family of Raymond English, a prominent, well-respected, long-serving member of Bolsterstone Male Voice Choir, who died aged 92 in October, are donating a trophy to be awarded each year to the most promising young person or youth group performing at the festival. The fam-
ily has funded trophies in a modern design which will be kept by the recipients over the next decade.
Festival director Hilary Osborn said: ‘“We have been so overwhelmed and encouraged by the interest and support for the festival this year. We have a fantastic weekend of events and performances planned. There will be something for everyone with all styles of music including folk, jazz and blues, classical, pop and world music. We are especially delighted to host Sangeet a beautiful Asian women’s choir. Sangeet is a word used to describe a celebratory music event during an Indian wedding. “We are delighted that despite the current problems funding music in schools, at least half of this year’s 500 performers will be young people. We want to help all young musicians access music education whether in the community or in school. We are therefore especially grateful for the support given by Dransfield Properties and by the awarding of the Raymond English Festival Trophy.” BBC broadcaster Trisha Cooper, who compered last year’s festival concert, will
make a welcome return this year. A music festival was started in Stocksbridge and district in 1907 by local GP Dr Walter Midgeley Robertshaw and ran for more than 30 years. Bolsterstone Male Voice Choir secretary Rob Firth said: “There’s a wonderful tradition of diverse music in this valley. Last year’s revival of a festival was a great success and we hope that we can match Dr Robertshaw’s 30year run, though many of us will not be here to see it. It warms the heart to see performers of all ages - from infant school kids to pensioners - joining together in song, dance and drama.” Amanda Holmes, of Dransfield Properties, said: “We are delighted be working in collaboration with the team from the Valley Music Festival to present a fantastic weekend of good food and great music in June this year. “The Valley Festival Foundation is a wonderful local organisation and we are particularly pleased to be able to support local talent through the scholarship which is being supported by our own charitable foundation.”
SPRING FESTIVAL IN THORPE HESLEY ON Monday May 6, from 11am, the Spring Festival will be held at Trinity Community Centre and Holy Trinity Church in Thorpe Hesley. There will be a licensed bar selling real ales and a prosecco bar with hot food, cakes, tea and coffee. A wide variety of stalls, raffle, Tombolas and games, together with Maypole dancing, will be there to keep all ages entertained. In the church there will be a celebration of spring with local community groups taking part. Entry to the event is £1 per adult with children free. For more information, or to book a stall, please contact Kay Hester on 07708421017.

A ‘Safe Place’ for the night A NEW approach to ending rough sleeping and preventing the risk of people rough sleeping in Sheffield is being piloted with a new scheme. Called ‘Safe Place’, the scheme will work to end rough sleeping and provide better options for those who do sleep rough, which is a priority for the city. Safe Place is an assessment hub to prevent rough sleeping and the people who use it will be provided with rapid next day assessments, move on plans and access to advice and assistance. Wherever possible they will be supported to return home, but if this isn’t a suitable option, support workers will help people to find accommodation, working together with partner agencies and specialist services to access support and prevent people returning to the streets. The pilot is a collaboration between Sheffield city council, the Cathedral Archer Project, St Wilfrid’s Centre, Framework street outreach team and Ben’s Centre coming together to try this approach. People who have been sleeping rough will be staying at the Cathedral Archer Project and St Wilfrid’s
Centre (dividing the time between the two venues) between March 25 to April 18. The Safe Place will accommodate up to eight people overnight. Framework’s Street outreach will engage with people sleeping rough or at risk of sleeping rough to help them access the Safe Place. The Council’s Rough Sleeping Initiative Team will provide the next day assessment and advice, co-producing personal plans to help people with their housing, benefits, health and wellbeing. Staff and volunteers will welcome guests to the hub in the evening and help serve breakfast the next morning. Although the Safe Place is open for a limited period, it will help test the assessment hub approach and plan services going forward, in particular the help that can be given during the winter months. Janet Sharpe, Director of Housing and Neighbourhood Services said: “We have a wealth of fantastic services in Sheffield that are committed to working together to help people move on from the streets and get the help they need as quickly as possible. Help us Help, which is run by local charities, the council, a residents group and other services provides up to date information to the public about how best to support peo-

ple who find themselves begging or sleeping rough and will also be supporting and promoting Safe Place. “It will be interesting to see how the pilot goes and we hope that it goes very well. We hope too, that the government funding which is making the pilot possible will continue once the pilot ends.” Tim Renshaw, Chief Executive of The Cathedral Archer Project said: “It’s important to us that any service like this is progressive and that we see people get the support needed to leave the street forever.” Wayne Hoyle, Director of St Wilfrid’s Centre added: “For nearly 30 years, St Wilfrid’s Centre has been helping vulnerable adults across the city and this has always included providing support to rough sleepers. Whether it’s just a shower and a hot meal or longer term work, we are committed to helping people when they need us. We therefore welcome this initiative from the city council and are delighted to be working in partnership with the Cathedral Archer Project and others to initially provide a safe place whilst then working collaboratively on finding longer term solutions.”

At the consultation evening held by the proposed developer Morbaine, they estimated two cars per minute would visit the site during opening hours and at least two deliveries per day before and after hours. There are three primary schools in the area and any one of these could be along the suggested delivery route. The cost to air quality should be a thought that all residents in the surrounding area should consider especially if they have children or grandchildren.

CHAPELTOWN AND HIGH GREEN FEATURE Chapeltown and High Green in northern Sheffield are neighbouring areas that form part of the Ecclesfield civil parish and are buzzing hive of local independent businesses. It’s a popular place to live with commuters given its close proximity to the M1 motorway. There are a wide variety of shops, pubs and restaurants and a wealth of local action and community groups. It also has a beautiful park. The town also has a twice-weekly market. Like much of Sheffield there is a large amount of greenspace in and around Chapeltown and High Green. Between Chapeltown and Ecclesfield the land is used for residential purposes on one side of the main road and agricultural on the other. There is also a brownfield site above the park. Most of the industry in the town lies within the Thorncliffe Industrial
Estate, formerly the Thorncliffe works of Newton, Chambers & Company. This company was first established on this site in 1793, initially an iron works but which over time expanded into related mining industries and the production of products produced by the fractional distillation of coal. These included the famous ‘Izal’ disinfectant range. During World War II Churchill tanks were built in the estate. Until recently one of these tanks stood as a memorial on the site of the old factory, but it had fallen into a poor state of repair and has now been removed for restoration, it is unclear if the tank will be replaced when the restoration is complete. The proximity of the M1 has helped the industrial estate’s expansion in recent years, especially with companies involved in distribution.

MYSTERY FLOWERS TWO containers at the bottom of Greaves Road, Ecclesfield, have suddenly been planted out with miniature daisies; but not by the container’s owners. Ecclesfield in Bloom, had left the earth bare for the winter, however, the two containers were then suddenly filled with flowers. Lots of people saw and appreciated the improvement, however it wasn’t until the In Bloom group met for their first meeting of the year that they realised that none of their members had either

bought the flowers or done the planting. The group was particularly grateful for the new flowers because of the difficulty they had last summer in replacing plants lost to thefts. These bedevilled the Greaves Road containers, as well as affecting some of the other 19 containers maintained by Ecclesfield in Bloom, as well as flowers planted by other Ecclesfield community groups. Ecclesfield in Bloom would therefore like to thank the
anonymous donor and invite them, and anybody else interested in helping to bring colour and pleasure to Ecclesfield, to join the group at 7pm in the lounge bar of ‘The Stocks’, on the first Tuesday of the month. The next thing that the group has organised is the village litter pick, which will start out from the Co-op car park at 10am on Saturday April 13. In contrast with the flowers, the group say that there is no joy in rubbish and no mystery behind its appearance.

World award winning food writer James McIntosh had the big career; presenting Food TV in China to audiences of 100 million viewers a week, and being the Global Ambassador for AGA cookers. James loved the international travel and life was good, that was until and one day it just got too much. Combine this with ‘toxic masculinity’ and James was confined to his bed for a year suffering from a moderately severe depressive episode. Anxiety, panic attacks and fear were all combined resulting in what James calls “the darkest black your mind can get. Through this, James taught himself to knit. He found that hand knitting helped him to recover. Together with his partner Dr Thomas A. Ernst FRCP they produced a concept called Knititation - hand knitting as a mindful prac-

But a fightback from Bottesford saw them draw on the road on Saturday. Keightley, in red hot form, scored twice to put Church 2-0 up at the break. But goals from Wayne Graves and Steve McCarron levelled the scores.
War Memorial Ladies back to winning ways Oughtibridge WM Ladies 4-0 Ollerton Town Ladies OUGHTIBRIDGE War Memorial Ladies quickly got over their cup disappointment with a 4-0 win at home to in form Ollerton in a classic game of keeping a clean sheet at one end whilst taking your chances at the other. Much of the praise must go to keeper Coran Wright and defenders Katie Denton, Milly Wilson and Abigail Towns for defending resolutely in the face of some good football by the away side who just
weren’t allowed to find a cutting edge. Jen Selman broke the deadlock on 26 minutes with a smashing volley into the top corner then the speedy Lauren Turner broke free before laying off to Millie Kenyon to stab home for a 2-0 interval lead. After the break Ollerton looked threatening and the next goal really would decide the game but it was Selman again who headed home superbly from a wicked Kenyon
corner to make it 3-0 before Kenyon took advantage of some hesitant defending to make it 4-0. The War Memorial Ladies shuffled formation in the second half with skipper Kathryn Mudge and Annie Longmore contributing to the clean sheet at the back. This Sunday, the Ladies face their longest away trip to face Kettering Town Ladies in what is sure to be a tough game.
Summer season starts in style THREE of the main sections of Stocksbridge Golf Club started their summer season of competitions, helped again by good weather and superb course conditions. The winter tees have been dispensed with and members now have the challenge of playing under summer rules. First up the Dragons section started their summer cup on April 3. M. Mosforth (23) was the overall winner of the first round with 39 points, ahead of C. Dale (24) on 38 points. Third place was taken by J. Sykes (16) on 37 points. D. Haley (13) and N. Weaver (17) also had 37 points but scored less well on the back nine holes. The gents section played their first summer competition on the 6th April with an unusual format. A three player team game, using an unusual stableford format, nicknamed
the Pros Waltz. The scoring comes from one player on the first hole, two for the second and three for the third, with the format repeating for the remainder of the round. The winning three ball was P. Elliott, S. Clayton and C. Page with an impressive score of 81 points. Second were E. Steele, L. Hydes and W. Lazenby with 80 points. P. Westhead, S. Cain and D. Peace were third also with 80 points but a slightly lower back nine. 16 groups of three overall played in the format and one player of note, Gary Siddons, managed three birdie twos in his round. The ladies section played a competition level stableford on April 7. A small field took part with Heather Evans (31) won with 31 points. Bev Sykes (27) was second with 27 points and Sue Hill (21) third with 26 points.
Positives from defeat for Tigers SHEFFIELD boss Simon Stead felt there were “lots of positives” after a hard-fought defeat at Redcar. The Tigers led by two points after Heat Seven but eventually went down 49-39 on a controversial night on Teesside. Drew Kemp was controversially excluded in Heat 8 after a great four-lap battle with Tom Bacon and that seemed to swing the clash in the home side’s favour. Perhaps the biggest talking point of the night was Heat 14 when Ty Proc-
tor passed Nathan Greaves coming out of turn four.
The Redcar youngster came down and was excluded only for him to leap up and run at Proctor causing a pit gate fracas. Redcar 49: Ben Barker 12+1, Charles Wright 10, Jordan Stewart 8+1, Michael Palm Toft 7, Tom Bacon 5+1, Jack Smith 4+3, Nathan Greaves 2. Tigers 39: Kyle Howarth 11, Ty Proctor 10+1, Danny King 7+1, Broc Nicol 4+2, Kasper Andersen 4, Drew Kemp 3, Zaine Kennedy 0.

Penistone ladies relay team make history
Local Sport ERNEST THORPE Halifax Road, Thurgoland 0114 2882152
MOT’s £35.00 HISTORY was made at the weekend as a team from Penistone Footpath Runners took part in the English National Road Relay Championships at Sutton Park, the premier club road running event in the country. The competition involved running six stages around the iconic Midlands course, each athlete completing either 3.1 miles or 5.3 miles. The six ladies racing with the best club runners in the country were Julia Cobham, Lesley Parker, Rachael Mayston, Becky Timms, Jill Carlton and Jill Scrivens who completed their 23 miles in a time of 2-55-26. This was enough to see them finish in 44th place overall. During the week Penistone runners took part in this year’s first running of the Trunce and the Spencer’s Dash races. 56 Penistone runners took part in the Trunce and 50 in the Spencer’s Dash.
Penistone were particularly successful at the Spencer’s Dash claiming five of the first six places. First back was Scott Hinchliffe in 19-57 followed by Gareth Cooke, 20-27, and in third Andrew Hepenstall finishing in 21-29. Hugh Mackie placed second at the junior Trunce race in a personal best time of 14-28 and Imogen Wolff was the second junior girl back in 16-04. In the senior races Lee Storey was the first Penistone runner back finishing twelfth overall in a time of 27-29. He was followed by Daren Nockels (18th, 2803) and Damian Kilpin (21st, 28-20). First lady back in 98th place for Penistone was the fast improving Sam Shaw in 33-28. She was followed by Becky Timms (104th, 34-07) and Julie Darigala (121st 34-54).

PIGS STILL IN TWO COMPETITIONS
IT was an eventful week for Stocksbridge RUFC but after a win and a defeat, they are still in the two competitions they are pursuing.
They made the trip to Leeds-based Burley on Saturday and a squad depleted due to late drop outs and travelling issues put up a brave show before going down narrowly by 25-20. Due to an unexpected chain of events, despite this loss, Stocksbridge get another bite at the cherry with a top four play off semi final at home to Thirsk at the weekend, where the Piggies will be keen to make amends and take the extra opportunity. Injuries and player availability forced head coach Keenan to recall
veteran playmaker Wayne Hirst, along with the evergreen Dan Lowe to the starting line up. A surprise late inclusion of former PNG Rugby League International and Sheffield Eagles legend Menzie Yere helped bolster the midfield. On a small, undulating pitch, the visitors started poorly, perhaps trying to work out their roles and understand the new combinations. However, they gave away several penalties and a kickable one gave the home side an early lead. Although Bowskill added a penalty to bring Stocksbridge into the game, Burley broke the shackles and against the run of play scored a try of their own to stretch the lead, making it 10-3 at half time.
Stocksbridge took the game to their opponents after the break and were rewarded with a Bowskill penalty to bring them within four points of the home side. The visitors took the lead when Frith fed Yere and he danced around a couple of tacklers to score under the posts and Bowskill tagged on the conversion. Player coach Keenan suffered a pulled hamstring, and Spencer and Whitaker also had to be replaced as Stocksbridge went down to the bare bones of the squad. A yellow card and 10 minutes in the sin bin for Bowskill created enough room for the Burley winger to squeeze in at the corner to restore the lead for the home side.
The game changing moment came in the 72nd minute, when a loose Bowskill clearance was collected by the home full back, with nothing seemingly available to him, he rode a couple of weak tackling efforts, then sent a speculative kick into the Stocksbridge 20 and as Yere and Frith watched on in horror, the ball took a bounce only a rugby ball can and went straight back into the full backs arms. He scored unchallenged under the sticks. Shortly after Yere was harshly sin binned and the home kicker slotted the resulting penalty to put a bit of daylight between the two sides. Stocksbridge never gave up and to their credit had the final say when Hirst and O’Leary combined to send veteran flyer Dan Lowe over
in the corner and Bowskill nailed a difficult conversion to bring the visitors within a converted score of victory. In their other game of the week, Stocksbridge roared into the South Yorkshire Trophy Uniplex Bowl Competition semi finals with a thrilling victory in a physical encounter with Barnsley’s second string, eventually running out 2017 winners on Wednesday evening. Stocksbridge host Wheatley Hills’ second string in the mid week cup semi-final on Wednesday evening at 6.30pm, followed by the Shield semi final on Saturday, when the visitors are Thirsk. Kick off is 3pm, entrance is free and all are welcome.

STEELS MAKE IT THREE WINS IN A ROW AFC Mansfield 1-2 Stocksbridge PS
By: Owen Harrison Photo: Pete Revitt
the incident was waved away by the referee.
STOCKSBRIDGE steered further clear of the relegation zone on Saturday afternoon as two first half goals from Scott Ruthven and Luke Mangham saw the Steels overcome relegation rivals AFC Mansfield at the Forest Town Arena.
The visitors’ hard work paid off, however, in the 29th minute with a beautifully worked goal. After brilliant work by the Steels midfielders to create the opening for Luke Mangham on the right hand side of the box, Mangham cut the ball back into the centre of the box where Scott Ruthven was ready and waiting to pounce like a tiger on the opportunity at his feet.
The result sees Steels move up to 14th in the table, nine points from the relegation zone. There could have been a penalty given in favour of the visitors from South Yorkshire after five minutes when Ruthven was held back in the box by Jordan Annable, who made a number of errors in the game.
The Steels number nine smashed the ball, first time, into the roof of the net, beating Jason White with his ferocious shot that all developed because of the goalscorer dispossessing a Mansfield Town defender earlier on in the build up to the goal.
Although Scott Ruthven went down under the challenge, there were very little appeals from the Stocksbridge bench, and
The Steels’ second then followed. Stocksbridge did well down the right wing to work the Mans-
field defence, the winger on the far side cut it back and Rory Coleman aimed his shot for the bottom right corner. His shot was blocked by the AFC Mansfield defence who did well to divert danger away for a corner, but the resulting corner which was taken by Rory Coleman found the head of Luke Mangham who was situated on the far post. His header found the bottom left of the goal, beating Jason White for the second time. Although, many AFC Mansfield players protested as they thought there was a foul in the build up to the goal and that it should have been ruled out because of this. But the referee waved it away as nonsense and the goal stood. But in the second half, the tables turned. As substitute Dawes ran down the right wing, he cut back to find a way into the box.
But as he found a route into a promising position, Jordan Lemon made a mistake by taking down the Mansfield attacker in the box and the referee had no other option but to point to the spot. Dawes stepped up against young keeper David Robson and turned the Steels keeper the wrong way, slotting the penalty straight down the middle with Robson diving to the right of goal. Despite two late penalty shouts being turned away by the referee, one that was very lucky to have been waved away after a Steels defender handled the ball in the area, Stocksbridge held off the AFC Mansfield pressure to earn a valuable three points in their relegation battle. Steels are away to Carlton on Saturday April 13, with a 3pm kick off.
