Stocksbridge survive Coleman spot-kick earns last day point the weather to take Civil Service by storm Stocksbridge Park Steels ended the 2018/19 campaign on a high after battling hard in extremely difficult conditions at Bracken Moor to earn a well deserved point against in form outfit Ossett United.

points tallied up out of a possible 15 in recent outings, Stocksbridge were never going to be walked over by an extremely promising and talented Ossett United side who were using today’s test at the Look Local Stadium to consolidate their position in the end of season play offs whilst trying to gain momentum ahead of their play off semi final against either Pontefract Collieries or Brighouse Town which would both provide difficult opposition for the West Yorkshire high fliers.

Stocksbridge 118-7 (Jack Newton 29, Joe Hibbert 29, Liam Grayson 28) Sheffield Civil Service 49 all out (Joe Hibbert 5-7) After last weeks season opener in the beaming sunshine, this weekend’s conditions couldn’t have been more opposite as the 1st XI made the short journey to Ecclesfield to take on Sheffield Civil Service. With a very suspect forecast, play looked in doubt from the off. Due to the forecast both umpires suggested a shortened game, as this would give more chance of completing a game and both captains agreed to a 25 over game. The home side won what could have been a crucial toss and elected to put Stocksbridge in to bat. The Stocksbridge innings couldn’t have started much worse as they were reduced to 8-3 inside 5 overs and they seemed in huge trouble. Liam Grayson came to the crease to join opener Jack Newton and the pair began to rebuild the innings however just as the pair looked comfortable, Newton was bowled for a well made 29. This now left Stocksbridge at 42-4 needed a strong partnership in order to achieve a reasonable total. Joe Hibbert joined Grayson and the pair added to last weeks excellent partnership to put on 58 for the next wicket. Grayson and Hibbert batted very well and determinedly in very difficult conditions before both being removed for 28 and 29 respectively. A few late runs from Steve Perry and Jake Vickers in the final overs, showing the sides batting depth, got the total up to 118-7 from 25 overs setting Civil Service a total of 119 to win. At the halfway point both sides fancied there chances. With Civil Service’s dangerous top order, Stocksbridge knew that early wickets would be important. The innings got off to a perfect start when opening bowler Joe Hibbert removed the opening batter for 0 after just four balls. Hibbert wasn’t done there though, bowling with pace, accuracy and favourable wind, Hibbert tore apart the top order thanks to mixture of fast pace and assistance from the wicket. Before Civil Service knew it Hibbert had taken 5 wickets and Civil Service were 6 down and in huge trouble. Change bowlers captain Andy Hibbert and veteran Les Harris came into the attack and there was no let up for the Civil Service batsmen. Both A.Hibbert (2-7) and Harris (2-1) bowled with great accuracy and picked up two wickets each in quick time and Civil Service were bowled out for 49 falling 69 runs short of the target. Joe Hibbert was the pick of the bowlers ended with fantastic figures of 7-2-7-5. Next week sees the 1st XI play there first home game of the season as they host Parkhead at Bracken Moor. The 2nd XI, who are yet to play this season due to a bye in the cup and this weeks game being cancelled due to the weather, will travel to Baslow hoping to get off to a winning start

The Steels in recent weeks have steered well clear of what, at times, looked to be an inevitable and expected drop into the NCEL Premier division, with wins against AFC Mansfield away and Lincoln United at the Look Local Stadium helping them rise up in the table to a safe and comfortable position of 14th. LAST BALL DRAMA FOR OUGHTIBRIDGE If you value your nails, then I strongly advise you don’t watch Oughtibridge WMCC 1st team. Tight, last ball games have been something of a regular occurrence and Saturdays away match away at Rockingham Colliery CC 1st XI had everyone involved chewing on their fingers right up to the final delivery. In a rain affected game Oughtibridge were asked to bat and made steady progress. Hamza Ilyas laid strong foundations with an elegant 49 before, yet again, the middle order pushed the away side to a decent looking score of 201-6 from their allotted 46 overs. Duckworth Lewis was brought into play which meant Rockingham were looking at 205 to gain the victory. And a victory looked assured as they moved serenely to 115-1 courtesy of a couple of half centuries from Andy Shore and Naz

Khan. But this Oughtibridge team are nothing if not resilient. Wickets from Ben Ladd Gibbon and Hamza started to slowly bring the game back to the away side. The win though could have gone either way and as the last over was bowled Rockingham needed 10 runs with three wickets left. Enter Tom Starkes for his first over of the match to bowl his off spin rippers. Five balls later he’d taken two wickets and Rockingham needed a 6 to win from the final ball. And from that ball Oughtibridge skipper and wicketkeeper, John Grayson, bagged his third stumping of the over and with it a magnificent win for Oughtibridge to take them top of the SYCL Championship. And breathe… Joining them at the top of their respective SYCL division are Oughtibridge 2nd XI who built on last weeks opening win with a comprehensive victory over

Barnsley Woolley Miners CC 4th XI in a match reduced to 30 overs per side. Asked to bat first Barnsley’s young and talented side struggled to get a foothold in the cold conditions, eventually reaching 64-9 from their allotted overs Herbinder Singh Lali and Owais Bhatti both taking three wickets a piece. In reply Bill Green and Liaquat Ali eased the home side to the win inside 15 overs. So that makes it four wins from four for the two senior Oughtibridge sides. The first team host Aston Hall 2nd XI on Saturday at Station Lane, while the second team travel to Shiregreen. And on Sunday…its T20 time down at Oughtibridge, who host (and play) the first section of the DB Sports South Yorkshsire League T20. Teams from Conisborough, Penistone and Darfield are also involved. Games start at 10.00 with the final due off around 5pm.
