Trust calls for Smithy Wood to be preserved Smithy Wood near Chapeltown, on the outskirts of Sheffield has appeared on maps for hundreds of years. An Ancient Woodland that contains rare and vulnerable species. However, this ancient woodland like many others with its unique bluebell swathes face relentless attack from development.

Blooming Bluebells

A planning application decision is still pending as to whether this area is to be turned into a motorway service area, including an 80bed hotel and retail park, at junction 35 between Sheffield and Rotherham. Smithy Wood is designated as a Local Wildlife Site and sits within the Green Belt. Dating back more than 850

Eco Sofas

years, the wood has been an important feature of the local landscape and plays a huge part in our local history. It supports a diverse range of locally and nationally important species – including ancient woodland flora, birds, bats, fungi and butterflies – and of course bluebells!

The planning application for Smithy Wood is currently on hold while another application for an alternative motorway service station at Junction 33 of the M1 is being prepared for a decision by Rotherham Council’s planning committee. Sheffield & Rotherham Wildlife Trust have argued against the need for an MSA at either site. “We do not think an MSA is needed on

this stretch of the M1”, says Liz Ballard, Chief Executive of Sheffield & Rotherham Wildlife Trust.

“We strongly object to the planning application for Smithy Wood, an ecologically important ancient woodland and Local Wildlife Site which supports a rich and irreplaceable biodiversity built up over many hundreds, if not thousands of years”. “Once again, we call upon Sheffield City Council to refuse this application and work with us to protect Smithy Wood as Community Woodland for wildlife and for future generations of local people to benefit from and enjoy.”

For just a few short weeks, breathtaking swathes of bluebells with their heady scent will be enticing you out into our ancient woodlands. Despite their fleeting appearance, native bluebells, with their deep blue flowers and drooping heads, take years to establish and spread extremely slowly one study shows they take 35 years to spread a mere 50 metres. This makes them a great indicator species, so if you find large swathes of native bluebells in a wood, it’s likely that the wood has been there for some time – often centuries! In turn our beautiful bluebells can only survive and thrive if the woods in which they live are protected and wellmanaged.

A revolutionary approach to property design coming to Stocksbridge

A new era of pioneering housing is set to come to Stocksbridge with the launch of Sky-Lo.

Sky-Lo is the latest revolutionary design for living from the acclaimed SkyHouse Co, designed by the architects at awards winning Sheffield multi disciplinary practice CODA Studios. And plans for the development of eight two-bedroom Sky-Lo properties on the site of the former Peggy Tub Working Men’s Club at New Road, Stocksbridge, have now been approved by Sheffield Council. Sky-Lo is the latest generation of design from CODA, following the success of the acclaimed Sky-House development, the 21st century take on the Victorian backto-back house that includes two double bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms, an open

plan kitchen/diner and a private roof garden accessed from a private study area. Taking that concept one stage further, Sky-Lo offers one-floor living, with two bedrooms and a kitchen diner space at ground level and a lounge or recreation area above, along with a roof garden. The Sky-House Co was founded by CODA CEO David Cross and Property Developer Philip Prince of Broadfield Holdings. “Sky-House at Waverley has been one of CODA’s most talked about and applauded concepts and it is very exciting to be able to take that original design concept to a whole new level, said David.

“With prices from as little as ÂŁ155,000 this development will be truly innovative but affordable housing to Stocksbridge as this north Sheffield community’s renaissance continues. “Now the development is approved we look forward to seeing work begin, especially as we will work closely with buyers to give them exactly the configuration they want. “We now have five different Sky-House models and we are confident that this new addition will prove as popular as the the houses now nearing completion at the Waverley site on the other side of Sheffield.â€?

On Saturday 4th May, the sound of cow bells and whistles echoed through Grenoside woods as hundreds and maybe even thousands gathered to watch and take part in local former world champion Steve Peat’s annual Steel City Downhill. Peaty’s Steel City DH is a mini downhill race held annually in Greno Woods Shef-

field. It has been running since 2011 and raises money to fund trail building and maintenance in the woods ever since. It is a not for profit race with everyone volunteering their time and all proceeds reinvested in the woods making it the biggest little race on the calender.

Amongst the parish council elections, a teenager, James Swift,19, pictured was elected to represent the Chapeltown ward of Ecclesfield Parish council.

WHEN NARNIA CAME TO STANNINGTON Not for the first time, Hallam ’89 Theatre Club and Stannington Library joined forces in April to present a fund-raising entertainment.

In this specially adapted version of The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe, the library building itself acted as the old house where the children’s adventure begins, whilst Stannington Park was transformed into Narnia, complete with lamppost and stone table. Here is where the main action of the classic C S Lewis story unfolded.

Players and audience alike passed from one to the other and back again through a magical ‘wardrobe’ built round the library door. Library volunteers will certainly be trying to stage more events like this.

Sonia Stanco, 19, of Worsbrough, said: “I will definitely visit Helsinki again in the future. It was a lot of fun and we enjoyed being able to have spare time to socialise with each other. It was very good experiencing a different culture and visiting the iconic locations.”

Andrew Hallott, HE Teaching Associate, added: “I’m fortunate enough to have visited this great city several times. The students were a credit to themselves and the College. We will get some feedback from the students and use this to plan for next year!”

Students visited Haaga Helia University and continued their unique link with the University by having a tour of the campus at Porvoo. The University provided a tour of the campus which gave students the opportunity to see how the education systems of Finland and the UK differ. Trips run every year to allow students to experience different cultures, visit iconic locations and give them the opportunity to gather information and materials that will help with their studies.

Upper Don Renewable Energy is a local group of people interested in promoting these technologies. We are organising an event on Saturday 11th May (10 am – 3 pm) where people can talk to other local householders who are using these in their homes. Are you interested in finding out the experiences of local people who have installed renewable technologies, such as of wind power, biomass, heat pumps (both air source and ground) and PV panels, and finding out about the advantages/disadvantages and costs? Please contact us on 07707762995 if you would like to join us at this or future events. We also have a couple of electric cars and a display of the exciting passive house development on Hunshelf Bank, Stocksbridge. We look forward to seeing you, Barry Tylee, Upper Don Renewable Energy

Lord Mayor invites the city (and the world) to #LoveSheffDay

Sheffield’s flamboyant Lord Mayor, Councillor Magid Magid, is inviting all-comers to a farewell party with a difference next month.

using this event to celebrate Sheffield, say goodbye and to encourage people to tell the world why they #LoveSheffDay.”

The city centre is set to play host to #LoveSheffDay – a celebration of local literary, musical and cultural talent.

The music stage is set to include a performance by renowned Sheffield 20-piece party act, the Tin Soldiers.

The event is an open invitation for everyone to get involved – both by attending the free event and also using the hashtag #LoveSheffDay to tell the world their favourite aspects of the Steel City.

The band consists of 18 horns, electric bass and drums, and performs tracks by the likes of Earth Wind and Fire, James Brown, Stevie Wonder, The White Stripes, Wild Cherry, Herbie Hancock and others.

#LoveSheffDay is set to take place on Saturday, May 11th, and includes a full day of live music, poetry reading, fun fair, kids’ entertainment, catering and more.

There will also be contributions from two of the finest musicians from Music In The Round – Matthew Hunt and Amy Harman who play clarinet and bassoon with resident group Ensemble 360.

The Lord Mayor is hoping local people will adopt his #LoveSheffDay hashtag and get the city trending across the world. He said: “I have nothing but love and respect for my adopted city and its people. There is so much talent here. But I’ve often found we don’t shout about the place enough. So I’m

UPTO 70% rp f of the r

The event will run from 12pm until 6pm. A former refugee, Councillor Magid Magid was Sheffield City Council's first Green Party mayor and its youngest at 29. His year in office finishes this month and he has just been chosen as the lead candidate for the Green Party in the up and coming European Elections.

Councillor Magid Magid said being mayor was the "most rewarding thing" he had ever done. "One of the reasons I wanted to be a councillor was to play a more active role in my community and represent those voices that I believed weren't being represented in the council”.

There is also a #MySheffield photography competition which is inviting people to share their personal vision of Sheffield. It is organised by Our Favourite Places and the winner will get to spend the day with Councillor Magid Magid in one of his last days as Lord Mayor. #LoveSheffDay will continue into the evening with Councillor Majid

Majid’s farewell party at Plug nightclub. The event – which includes free flapjack and custard - will be raising funds for his nominated charities: * Sheffield Flourish * Sheffield Women's Counselling and Therapy Service * Unity Gym Project

Your Letters Hold a summer fundraiser in Yorkshire Dear editor, Whatever the weather and wherever you are, why not gather with friends and family this summer and help raise vital funds that will help cure and support everyone affected by Parkinson’s. I’m proud to be supporting charity Parkinson’s UK’s Garden Gathering fundraiser, and we’re calling on people to celebrate the summer their way – whether it’s with tea and cake, or cocktails and a BBQ. By holding your own Garden Gathering, you’ll be raising money that could help end Parkinson’s forever. Parkinson’s is a serious neurological condition and I’ve seen first-hand the impact it has on people. My mum was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2010 and it’s hugely debilitating. But Parkinson’s UK’s research provides hope that one day there will be a cure, and the charity believes that scientists could now be on the verge of a major breakthrough. Organising a Garden Gathering is easy, so please sign up for your free fundraising pack and you’ll be making a huge difference to the 11,400 people living with Parkinson’s in Yorkshire. To start planning your fun-filled summer fundraiser please visit: parkinsons.org.uk/gardengathering Sian Lloyd TV Broadcaster and Parkinson’s UK supporter

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These QHHG WR EH ÂżOOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

Wedding Feature

Last of wedding The romance of getting married is quite often marred by the worrying costs involved. The consensus is that the average outlay is spiralling ever upwards, but new research now suggests that couples may be becoming more restrained in their attitude to spending on their big day.

2019 collections now arriving Special is what every lady is to us and amazing is how we want you to feel, because geing it right is our priority. Whilst appointments aren’t essential it helps us to give a more personal service.

The average cost of a wedding is now about ÂŁ16,000. A survey carried out by Halifax Personal Loans reveals that only nine per cent of people think this is a reasonable amount to pay. Over half of those questioned thought this was too much to fork out on their nuptials, believing that ÂŁ10,000 or less was a more appropriate figure. One quarter of people in the survey would hope to cut costs even further by spending between ÂŁ1,000 and ÂŁ5,000. Singletons are the most likely to be dreaming of an extravagant wedding, with a quarter of this group prepared to consider spending more than ÂŁ15,000 when they get hitched. Interestingly, people who are already married or who had been married before were far less likely to see the need to splash out over the odds. Only 13 per cent and 15 per cent re-

spectively believed it was reasonable to spend ÂŁ15,000 or more. Young love knows no financial bounds it seems, with one in five of the 18-25 age group considering ÂŁ15,000 and over a reasonable amount to pay. This compares with one in 10 of the 25-34 age group and eight per cent of the 35-44 age group. Northerners are most inclined to splash out on weddings. Four per cent said spending over ÂŁ50,000 on their big day would be acceptable. Couples in the southwest are the least likely to pay over the odds, with 17 per cent considering less than ÂŁ1,000 a reasonable amount. When it comes to the honeymoon, more people appear to be comfortable with the typical costs involved. The average cost of a honeymoon trip is estimated at ÂŁ2,475. Nearly half of those questioned agreed that between ÂŁ2,000 and ÂŁ4,999 was a reasonable sum to pay. One in five considered over ÂŁ5,000 a more suitable figure. Only three per cent thought it would be more reasonable to spend under ÂŁ1,000.

the big spenders Ian Corfield, head of Halifax Unsecured Personal Loans, says, "Weddings seem to have come back in fashion in recent years and we have seen average costs increase dramatically. "However, our survey suggests that there may be a change in opinion as to how much couples should spend. It may be that the costs typically involved have reached a level that is no longer considered reasonable. "In contrast, people seem generally more comfortable with average honeymoon costs and do not see this level of expense as unreasonable or over-inflated."

Special pups have fun at first birthday tea party They might be life-changing assistance dogs of the future but Dan, Derek and Westie are also just puppies who want to have fun!

The cute threesome, who are pups-intraining with national Sheffield-based charity Support Dogs, were given a special Puppy Party to celebrate their first birthdays – and to mark the next stage of their training. Staff at the charity provided cake, balloons and toys for the trio, who enjoyed party games, chasing balls and generally being the centre of attention. The puppies are all being looked after by puppy socialisers - volunteers in and around Sheffield who care for them in the 12-month period before they enter their full training at the age of 15 months. Now Support Dogs are appealing for more volunteer puppy socialisers to come forward to look after the next batch of puppies, due to arrive at their national training centre in Brightside next month. “We rely heavily on our volunteer puppy socialisers to provide a loving home for our pups until they are old enough to train

to be assistance dogs; it’s perfect for people who love dogs but can’t commit to owning one,” says Support Dogs’ chief executive Rita Howson. “It can be hard work but people have the satisfaction of knowing they have helped in the training of a valued assistance dog that can transform the lives of people with serious medical conditions.” Support Dogs train assistance dogs for children with autism and adults with epilepsy and physical disability, enabling them to lead safer, more independent lives. Puppy socialisers have to live within an hour’s drive of Support Dogs’ training centre, be at home during the day, and have an enclosed garden. Anyone interested in applying should contact the charity on 0114 2617800 or email info@supportdogs.org.uk

Hawks wobble at Wibsey

Wibsey Warriors 34 Sheffield Hawks 12

A cup match in Bradford served up a salutary lesson in organisation and preparation for the Hawks. Although the result didn’t go our way the new look Hawks team showed glimpses of potential for the rest of the season. The first half was closer than the score suggests. Hawks soaked up pressure from a strong Wibsey side and held off set after set with good solid defensive sets forcing errors. Joe Littlewood again lead from the front, forcing his way over after solid approach work from the forwards. Adam Wilson converted and with two minutes left of the first half the score was 6-4 to the Hawks. However, two injuries forced off key players and in the ensuing shuffle about gaps were left and Wibsey scored. From the kick off Wibsey ran through the heart of the Hawks line and defensive frailty was exposed, the winger touching down under the posts. For the remainder of the match Hawks appeared to be playing 13 men and a very inconsistent referee. Callan Drewery touched down, but the try was disallowed. Very few decisions went Hawks way although string runs by Sam Eaden, Will Burns and Ed Measures ran hard throughout but couldn’t quite break through. A try from Eaden, brilliantly converted out wide by Wilson, gave some encouragement but Wibsey proved the stronger team. Hawks finished on the front foot, didn’t rise to numerous unnecessary attempts to provoke them, and didn’t really get going. However, their positive, hard working approach will reap dividends in the league as the full squad gels over the next few weeks

The fast improving Lee Storey was first man back for Penistone in a personal best time of 26-57. First lady back for Penistone was Sam Shaw who was also 3rd lady overall in 31-56. Ray Brown was first over70 man in 49-43. Switching to the road, it was the second Spencer’s Dash and Penistone again dominated the race with 6 of the first 10 finishers coming from the club. First back and second overall was Scott Hinchliffe in 20-20. First lady back was Sam Shaw who got round in a time of 2602. Despite running in the London marathon the previous week Gareth Cooke took part in the North Lincolnshire Half Marathon and achieved 5th place in 1-12-18. Rob Davies put in a strong run to finish in 1-26-53 and John Lawcock also performed well to finish in a time of 1-35-11.

Oughtibridge lifted by T20 win If you heard a loud dull thud at around 4pm on Saturday afternoon don’t be alarmed. That was simply the noise of Oughtibridge 1st XI being brought back down to earth at Station Lane in an emphatic manner against Aston Hall 2nd XI and thus ending their brief stint at the top of the South Yorkshire Cricket League Championship division. The cold stats, a loss by 9 wickets, gives you the result, but barely tells the story. After winning the toss and electing to bat first, Oughtibridge started badly and found little improvement as their short innings progressed, with wickets falling at a regular rate.

This was as easy a day for the scorers as it was for the visitors, with only two Oughtibridge batters reaching double figures. So after nearly two hours the home side posted a score of just 54 – Daniel Botha claiming 6-32. In response Aston Hall 2nd XI coasted home with the loss of just a single wicket. People tend to use tried and tested means, an alarm clock for instance, for wake up calls. Last Saturday this young and talented Oughtibridge team received one that they will need to shake off and learn from immediately if they are going to compete in the Championship. They travel to Wath to play their 1st XI next week.

The positives emanating from Oughtibridge came by way of the 2nd XI, who maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a hard fought win at Shiregreen. Waheed Bhatti shone with a typically stylish 60 and ably supported by Liaqat Ali (40) the visitors set Shiregreen a score of 181 for victory. On a bitterly cold day, it was an excellent effort by the Oughtibridge bowlers, the pick being Raza Abbas (5-13), to skittle the home side for just 107. The win puts Oughtibridge 2nd XI into second place in the SYCL Division 4 and a crunch match against third place Rockingham Colliery awaits at Station Lane on Saturday.

And so to Sunday when Oughtibridge hosted, and competed in the semi-finals of the DB Sports South Yorkshire League T20 competition. And what a great day it was. Oughtibridge managed to ease past Conisbrough in their opening match which meant victory against Darfield would mean a trip to T20 finals day at Wath on 26th May. And although stuttering to a below average score of 104, Oughtibridge were soon in the ascendency once they had the pink ball in hand - reducing Darfield to 18-8 at one point before finally bowling them out for just 40. A fantastic win.

Family triumph for Mackies at OMM Father and son team Richard and Hugh Mackie took on the lite version of the Original Mountain Marathon otherwise know as the OMM and came away as first family team. The event takes place over two days and involves a large amount of navigation. It was a 1-2 for Penistone in the family team event as mother and son Sarah and John Halstead picked up second place behind the Mackies. Penistone runners were active on the trails and fells competing in a number of local events. Sarah Walch, Helen Wright and Harriet Drouin took part in the Tiger’s Trail race which is 5 miles in distance and involves 680 feet of ascent. Further afield Sarah and Andy Walch competed in the Lakeland trails races in Staveley. Sarah ran well to finish as 9th lady, Andy was 84th overall. Birthday girl Harriet Drouin competed in the aptly named Cake race which was 10 miles in length and involved 1,700 feet of ascent. Harriet finished in 129th place and reportedly consumed plenty of cake at the end!!

Tigers secure home win

DANNY King went unbeaten against his former club as Sheffield got their home league campaign up and running with a victory. Tigers eventually eased to a comfortable 5535 win over Championship newcomers Birmingham - but the visitors gave them plenty to think about in the early stages. Just two points separated the two sides with seven races gone before Sheffield reeled off three successive 5-1 maximums to open up a bit of breathing space. They were rarely troubled from that moment on either, only failing to win one of the final five races.

King and captain Kyle Howarth dropped just one point between them to an opposing rider The second Trunce of the year took place and as always there was a large turn- on an inspirational evening from the heatout at the Oxspring based event with plenty of Penistone runners taking part. leader duo. continued on page 18

Kenyon hat-trick seals win Oughtibridge completed their run of 4 games in 10 days with a thrilling 5-2 win at home to midtable Rise Park. With a decimated squad manager Andy Towns turned to youngster Brooke Swann and the evergreen duo of Kelly Biney and Bridie Pitsch to bolster the ranks and they didn’t disappoint. Such was the call for arms there was even a start for Codi Melia, trying a return less than 8 weeks after her leg fracture. An even opening period became about taking chances as they fell at both ends before Melia threaded a ball to Millie Kenyon to round the keeper and slot home for a 1-0 lead. An enormous clearance from Coran Wright then found Kenyon in the clear to calmly lob the keeper for 2-0. Unfortunately for Melia her return was cut short by her injury, being replaced by Swann but it only took the teenag-

er 10 minutes to score on her debut as her first effort was cleared off the line until she rammed the rebound home to give the hosts a 3-0 half time advantage. Knowing a big win would help overcome a 15 goal difference on top side Leicester the home team set about Rise Park in the 2nd half but this became immaterial as it was back to 3-2 on the hour after 2 quick goals and by then it was very much game on. The nerves were settled on 72 minutes as Kenyon fed Swann, whose volley was brilliantly saved by the keeper only for Kenyon to slot home the rebound for her second hat-trick in 3 games. Ty Proctor looked back to his usual self as he delivered a paid double score for the first time at Owlerton this season - a feat also achieved by Zaine Kennedy who extended his impressive home run. Kasper Andersen contributed two paid victories while guest reserve Danyon Hume took the chequered flag in Heat Two. Youngster Drew Kemp took a hefty tumble in his opening ride - but rode through the pain barrier to earn a battling success in Heat Nine before being withdrawn from the meeting. Tigers No.1 King said: “After just missing out to Leicester in the Championship Shield last time here, we wanted to get back to winning ways today. “We did just that and to start our league fixtures off at home with a win is very pleasing. “We know we’re a solid side throughout, particularly at home and we showed that again today.” Sheffield travel to Glasgow on Friday (May 10, 7.30) for the first leg of their Knockout Cup tie before the decider at Owlerton next Sunday (May 12, 4pm). Stocksbridge make it perfect weekend Parkhead 1st XI 131 all out (Andy Hibbert 3-23, Les Harris 3-40, Joe Hibbert 2-23) Stocksbridge 1st XI 135-4 (Jack Newton 56, Liam Grayson 35*) Stocksbridge 1st X1 continued their great start to the season by beating title favourites Parkhead at Bracken Moor by 6 wickets. Stocksbridge captain Andy Hibbert won the toss and put the visitors into bat, Joe Hibbert 10-4-23-2 started where he left off last week bowling with pace and aggression not allowing the Parkhead batsman to settle. In the 3rd over, Hibbert claimed the first of his 2 wickets and was backed up at the other end by his father Andy Hibbert who returned figures of 11.2-3-25-3. Everytime Parkhead started to build a partnership the Stocksbridge bowling attack found an answer and now with Colin Vickers and Les Harris taking over in the bowling department, Parkhead couldn’t find any match winning knocks with Harris finishing with 9-1-40-3. The Stocksbridge bowlers were backed up by 2 great run outs, Jack Lyons with a direct hit to dismiss Simmons for 26 and then shortly after Ant Siddall delivered the ball to Ben Lyons behind the stumps to run out Harrison for 21. Andy Hibbert finished off the innings with 2 LBWs, leaving the 1st X1 needing 132 for victory

They got off to a solid start with Matt Price and Jack Newton with the latter dispatching any loose delivery to the boundary with ease. Once Newton had been dismissed for a destructive 56 with 7 fours and now with the score on 91 for 4 the classy inform Liam Grayson 35no & Joe Hibbert 18no were at the crease. The pair both showed great maturity on young heads to see Stocksbridge home and pick up the maximum points and send them to the top of the league. Stocksbridge CC 2nd XI 235-8 (Will Cavanagh 74*, Jack Murfin 52, Jack Reeves 34) Baslow CC 1st XI 133-6 (Chris Thwaites 3-22)

Stocksbridge CC 2nd team travelled to Baslow on a chilly afternoon hoping to complete their first game of the season after last week’s washout. Stocksbridge won the toss and chose to bat and openers Elliot Freeman and Jack Murfin put on 35 before Freeman was bowled for 15. Then a partnership between Murfin and Jack Reeves of 70 with a number boundaries got the visitors to a strong position. Then a flurry of wickets from bowler Taylor accounted for Murfin for a well made 52, Jack Reeves for 34, Tom Dobson and Bob Newton. This

brought new signing Matt Hague and the returning Will Cavanagh to the wicket. After giving some early chances they went on to take control of the innings and took the visitors to 170-6 with a positive 28 from Hague. Cavanagh continued to bat superbly with support from Chris Thwaites and Paul Hargreaves to make 74 including ten 4s and two 6s which took Stocksbridge to 235-8. Baslow reply was hit early by the loss of opener and captain Taylor bowled by Thwaites. Opening bowlers Thwaites and Hargreaves kept pressure on Baslow which put Stocksbridge in the driving seat. The home team never looked like chasing down the total and it was a case of whether Stocksbridge could bowl them out. Three wickets for Chris Thwaites and one each for Will Cavanagh and Paul Hargreaves and run out by Tom Dobson put Baslow on 133-6 after 46 overs giving Stocksbridge a welcome victory, but not gaining full bonus points not bowling opposition out. Next week the 1st XI will look to extend their perfect start as they host Totley at Bracken Moor. The 2nd XI will look to build on this weeks victory as they travel to Richmond.
