Oughtibridge lifted by T20 win If you heard a loud dull thud at around 4pm on Saturday afternoon don’t be alarmed. That was simply the noise of Oughtibridge 1st XI being brought back down to earth at Station Lane in an emphatic manner against Aston Hall 2nd XI and thus ending their brief stint at the top of the South Yorkshire Cricket League Championship division. The cold stats, a loss by 9 wickets, gives you the result, but barely tells the story. After winning the toss and electing to bat first, Oughtibridge started badly and found little improvement as their short innings progressed, with wickets falling at a regular rate.
This was as easy a day for the scorers as it was for the visitors, with only two Oughtibridge batters reaching double figures. So after nearly two hours the home side posted a score of just 54 – Daniel Botha claiming 6-32. In response Aston Hall 2nd XI coasted home with the loss of just a single wicket. People tend to use tried and tested means, an alarm clock for instance, for wake up calls. Last Saturday this young and talented Oughtibridge team received one that they will need to shake off and learn from immediately if they are going to compete in the Championship. They travel to Wath to play their 1st XI next week.
The positives emanating from Oughtibridge came by way of the 2nd XI, who maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a hard fought win at Shiregreen. Waheed Bhatti shone with a typically stylish 60 and ably supported by Liaqat Ali (40) the visitors set Shiregreen a score of 181 for victory. On a bitterly cold day, it was an excellent effort by the Oughtibridge bowlers, the pick being Raza Abbas (5-13), to skittle the home side for just 107. The win puts Oughtibridge 2nd XI into second place in the SYCL Division 4 and a crunch match against third place Rockingham Colliery awaits at Station Lane on Saturday.
And so to Sunday when Oughtibridge hosted, and competed in the semi-finals of the DB Sports South Yorkshire League T20 competition. And what a great day it was. Oughtibridge managed to ease past Conisbrough in their opening match which meant victory against Darfield would mean a trip to T20 finals day at Wath on 26th May. And although stuttering to a below average score of 104, Oughtibridge were soon in the ascendency once they had the pink ball in hand - reducing Darfield to 18-8 at one point before finally bowling them out for just 40. A fantastic win.

Tigers secure home win
DANNY King went unbeaten against his former club as Sheffield got their home league campaign up and running with a victory. Tigers eventually eased to a comfortable 5535 win over Championship newcomers Birmingham - but the visitors gave them plenty to think about in the early stages. Just two points separated the two sides with seven races gone before Sheffield reeled off three successive 5-1 maximums to open up a bit of breathing space. They were rarely troubled from that moment on either, only failing to win one of the final five races.

Kenyon hat-trick seals win Oughtibridge completed their run of 4 games in 10 days with a thrilling 5-2 win at home to midtable Rise Park. With a decimated squad manager Andy Towns turned to youngster Brooke Swann and the evergreen duo of Kelly Biney and Bridie Pitsch to bolster the ranks and they didn’t disappoint. Such was the call for arms there was even a start for Codi Melia, trying a return less than 8 weeks after her leg fracture. An even opening period became about taking chances as they fell at both ends before Melia threaded a ball to Millie Kenyon to round the keeper and slot home for a 1-0 lead. An enormous clearance from Coran Wright then found Kenyon in the clear to calmly lob the keeper for 2-0. Unfortunately for Melia her return was cut short by her injury, being replaced by Swann but it only took the teenag-
er 10 minutes to score on her debut as her first effort was cleared off the line until she rammed the rebound home to give the hosts a 3-0 half time advantage. Knowing a big win would help overcome a 15 goal difference on top side Leicester the home team set about Rise Park in the 2nd half but this became immaterial as it was back to 3-2 on the hour after 2 quick goals and by then it was very much game on. The nerves were settled on 72 minutes as Kenyon fed Swann, whose volley was brilliantly saved by the keeper only for Kenyon to slot home the rebound for her second hat-trick in 3 games. Ty Proctor looked back to his usual self as he delivered a paid double score for the first time at Owlerton this season - a feat also achieved by Zaine Kennedy who extended his impressive home run. Kasper Andersen contributed two paid victories while guest reserve Danyon Hume took the chequered flag in Heat Two. Youngster Drew Kemp took a hefty tumble in his opening ride - but rode through the pain barrier to earn a battling success in Heat Nine before being withdrawn from the meeting. Tigers No.1 King said: “After just missing out to Leicester in the Championship Shield last time here, we wanted to get back to winning ways today. “We did just that and to start our league fixtures off at home with a win is very pleasing. “We know we’re a solid side throughout, particularly at home and we showed that again today.” Sheffield travel to Glasgow on Friday (May 10, 7.30) for the first leg of their Knockout Cup tie before the decider at Owlerton next Sunday (May 12, 4pm).
