One eye witness said “ It skidded onto Angram Bank Park which was clear, but surrounded by homes and telephone wires.” The balloon is believed to have landed in High Green around 8.45 pm, on Monday evening. There have been no reports of any injuries.

terrace at the FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest on April 15, 1989.
Former secretary of Sheffield Wednesday Football Club, Graham Mackrell is the first person to be convicted of an offence relating to the tragedy.
Louise Brookes, whose brother Andrew died, said it was a disgrace that the fine amounted to just £67.70 per victim.
Mackrell, 69, of Stocking Pelham, Hertfordshire, failed to ensure there were enough turnstiles to prevent large crowds building up. Preston crown court judge Sir Peter Openshaw said “There was an obvious risk so many spectators could not pass through seven turnstiles in time for kick-off.” He was also ordered to pay £5,000 towards the prosecution costs. Ninety-six Liverpool fans died following the crush in the central pens of the Leppings Lane
Mackrell sat in the well of the court rather than the dock for the sentencing hearing at Preston Crown Court. He was found guilty last month after an 11week trial of failing to discharge a duty under the Health and Safety at Work Act in respect of ensuring there were enough turnstiles to prevent unduly large crowds building up outside the ground. A hearing to decide whether former Ch Supt David Duckenfield, match commander will face a retrial is expected to be held next month.

On Thursday 2nd May, the people of North Sheffield made political history when they voted in 10 Independent Councillors to form part of the Ecclesfield Parish Council (EPC).
day, I was moved by the number of people in my area that got out and voted. I thought we might do well because we have had some great conversations on the doors steps while out meeting people, but I didn’t expect this.”
A new, non political, local group of residents, known as EPIC (Ecclesfield Parish Independent Councillors) won all ten seats they contested. EPIC Councillors won both seats in Burncross and Thorncliffe, all three seats in High Green and three out of the four in Chapeltown.
In line with what has happened nationally for Labour in local government elections; Labour took a massive blow as they lost all of their seats on the Parish Council, coming last in all the areas their candidates stood and going from controlling the council for the last four years to being unrepresented. As well as the ten Independent Councillors, there are 5 councillors representing the Liberal Democrats, having won 2 seats in Grenoside and Ecclesfield and the remaining seat in Chapeltown.
Traditionally EPC has been represented with councillors from either the Labour Party or the Liberal Democrats.

Match in memory of stocksbridge patient Friends of a much-missed young sportsman will take to the field in Leeds later this month to remember the special part he played in all their lives. Seán Sweeney was seriously injured in a building site accident in 2011 and, after five years in a rehab clinic in Stocksbridge, Sheffield, died in March 2016 at the age of 26.
He had lived in Leeds since he was a child but was originally from Donegal and never forgot his Irish roots. It is being held at Scott Hall Gaelic Football Field at 2pm on Saturday, May 25, the day after what would have been Seán’s 30th birthday.
tHE MP For Stocksbridge & Penistone MP has announced she will be on medical leave whilst she recovers from a hip replacement.
Action group oppose Bridge hill closure proposal
Angela Smith, who represents Penistone and Stocksbridge, will be going into hospital on Tuesday, May 14, for the hip replacement operation and as such will be on medical leave for around six weeks while she recovers.
The Oughtibridge Road Safety Action Group (ORSAG) has met with Sheffield City Council and outlined what it believes should be done to make the village safer.
In a statement, her parliamentary office revealed that Ms Smith will be away from Westminster during this time but will still be carrying out ‘as much work as possible’ via remote connections. They added: “Her constituency office in Stocksbridge will remain open throughout the period and will be dealing with all casework and constituent’s enquiries as normal. Constituents requiring assistance during this time are asked to contact either the constituency or Westminster office via phone on 0114 2831855 or 0207 219 3000. Earlier this year Angela Smith renounced her Labour membership to join a breakaway ‘Independent Group’
The junction of Orchard Street and Bridge Hill has been the scene of numerous accidents in the village and Sheffield City Council has said part of its solution is to close Bridge Hill to traffic. But ORSAG claims this would have a devastating effect on the village and is confident it has alternative plans that would make the village far safer without the closure of Bridge Hill. Group chair Gary Chamberlain said: “Our aim is to eradicate accidents in our village, but we do not want to see residents have their houses devalued
and businesses lose trade at the same time, which unfortunately could happen under council proposals. “We have already met with decision makers in the council and we are hopeful that we are going to be able to work together in eradicating those accidents by providing a safer road layout by reducing speed, enhancing signage and making everybody aware that there is an accident blackspot in our village.” The group will shortly be carrying out a leaflet drop to all village residents seeking their views and their thoughts on the proposal. A copy of this can be obtained by emailing oughtibridgeroads@gmail.com quoting ‘Proposal’ in the subject box.

School gets sporty
As part of the governments agenda, schools are provided with funding to try and increase the amount of the Physical Activity that a child does each day. It is recommended that children should exercise for 60 minutes per day with 30 minutes taking place in school. Royd Nursery Infant School already have the School Sports Mark Gold Award that recognises high levels of performance in Physical Education.
Despite the award the school strives to provide further Physical Activity related opportunities as well as offering exciting opportunities for the children to participate in. Mr Sly, Deputy He a dte a che r, commented “Earlier in the academic year Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 took part in a 30 minute aerobic session. The children enjoyed this so much that they wanted to invite a family member in

to school so that they could participate with them”. The event has a huge success with a large number of adults attending the session. One parent commented “I work in a school outside of Sheffield and our Easter holidays this year were different. It was lovely to be able to come into school and to do something fun with the children”.

An event organised by Barnsley College saw 500 pupils from Barnsley-based primary schools take to the race track to raise over £1,000 for Race for Life, Cancer Research UK. The event took place at Dorothy Hyman Stadium in Cudworth where students and staff from Barnsley College were joined by pupils from
Kexborough Primary School, Meadstead Primary Academy, St. Helen’s Primary Academy, Laithes Primary School, Churchfield Primary School and Birkwood Primary School. Cancer Research UK s Race for Life is a series of events raising money for research into all 200 types of cancer. Over the past 20 years,
more than eight million people have taken part in the Race for Life, raising over £547million to fund the charity’s life-saving work. Amy Daniels, Hair and Beauty Course Leader at Barnsley College and Race for Life runner, said: “I would like to say a huge thank you to the whole team at Barnsley College
who organised this event and well done everyone who worked so hard to make it a success. The money we have raised will help Cancer Research UK make a real difference.” Amanda Sowerby, Barnsley College Sports Maker and event organiser, added: “The Race for Life event was a
great success and I am proud of what we have all achieved. The fact the money we raised will go to helping Cancer Research UK fight cancer makes everyone feel proud.” To find out more about Barnsley College call 01226 216 123, email i n f o @ b a r n s l e y. ac.uk or visit www. barnsley.ac.uk
High Green Woman's EPIC weight loss Around 18 months ago, Tracy Grantham, 55, of High Green, joined the Thorncliffe Health and Leisure Centre. Approaching her mid fifties, she was feeling out of shape physically, lacked confidence and was overweight. Having never owned a gym membership, she nervously went along to a "Legs, Bums and Tums' class. Since then, there has been no looking back. Tracy now regularly uses both the gym and participates in a variety of different weekly classes. Tracy says "Having gained confidence due to socialising whilst exercising, I decided to pluck up the courage to go along to a local slimming group" Since February 2018, Tracy has lost an amazing 5 stone ! She says "I have never felt as good as I do right now. On my journey, I have had the most wonderful support from family, friends, fitness in-
structors, and fellow members of both the leisure centre and my local slimming group. Thank you all" Tracy hopes her success story will inspire others to lead a healthier lifestyle and find out more about their local facilities. " Not only am I fitter and slimmer, but less socially isolated and enjoying my life once again. Having gone from a size 24 to a 14 , I even actually enjoy clothes shopping, with my 19 year old daughter as style consultant!" With her new found confidence, Tracy is now a volunteer at the Angram Bank Youth Club and loves feeling like a kid again herself. Having bought a car and rediscovering her youthful energy; she uses these to help her elderly/less able friends and neighbours by taking them shopping and providing transport. She is also keen to get out into her wider
community by taking on other new challenges... On May 2, she stood as one of three candidates for the Ecclesfield Parish Independent Councillors (EPIC) in the ward of High Green and along with all 10 EPIC candidates, was duly elected. "A year ago, I would never have believed all this possible. Agreeing to my photo appearing on a campaign newsletter being hand delivered to hundreds and hundreds of High Green homes, and by me...Standing in, and winning in, an election to be a Parish Councillor...No way! “ Having totally transformed herself; Tracy hopes that she and the other 9 EPIC candidates, can transform the Parish Council and make a real difference in the future to many of the people they serve.

Local business woman Becka Roebuck, 33 has organised a small business showcase in her hometown of Penistone. Becka told Look Local “There really will be something for everyone with many stalls to browse and buy from on the day. Amongst the delights on offer will be children’s activities, jewellery, cosmetics and fragrance, butchers, travel agents and much, much more!
The aim is to spread the word about what great things we have available in our community that maybe people who don’t use social media have no idea about. Many of our retailers are online businesses - but we want to connect with those who may not use the internet, who want to see a smiling face and talk to us about our products - what better way than creating an event for the whole community?” The event will be opened at midday by Penistone’s Mayor, Gillian Milner

STANNINGTON CARNIVAL 2019 Asda Support boost Stannington Carnival Organisers of 2019’s Stannington Carnival met managers at Asda’s Chaucer Road superstore to collect a cheque for £1,000 from the ASDA Foundation. These funds will support the organisation costs of the annual event, so freeing more of its income on the day for distribution to local good causes. In 2018,
the event raised more than £5,000 which was shared between fifteen organisations who provide access for people from Stannington and beyond to a wide range of sporting, social and cultural activities. It is hoped that Asda’s generous contribution will help 2019’s total be even greater.

It’s not too late to make a Will... FAMILY NOTICES Issue Date:
Hello, I’m Jane Bowland, your local Estate Planning Consultant of 13 years experience. I am an expert in helping people arrange their Wills, Trusts, Lasting Powers of Attorney and Pre-paid Funeral Plans. Along with my colleague Haworth Ward-Drummond we specialise in helping all kinds of people gain peace of mind by providing professional advice, but with a personal touch. We offer a FREE consultation without obligation for anybody who would like to know more about any of the following:
Heading (please circle): Births / Birthdays / Graduations / Exams / Engagements / Weddings / Anniversaries / Missing / Acknowlegments / In Memory / Deaths / Other: ______________
Your message:
• Making a basic Will • Setting up Lasting Powers of Attorney • Protecting your home for future generations • Pre-paid Funeral Plans We know that planning for the future is a very personal matter. Not everyone is able or wants to travel to an appointment in town to sort out their affairs. We can visit you at a convenient time in the privacy and comfort of your own home to discuss your unique circumstances.
A visit and consultation is completely free and you are under no obligation to do anything. If you decide to make any arrangements you can be safe in the knowledge that all our professional services and work are fully insured and we are members of the Society of Will Writers, so all our clients are assured of the
highest standards of conduct at all times. All our clients (and their families) that we have helped in the past have been very happy with our services and tell us they have gained great peace of mind knowing that they have sorted everything out.

Jane came to see my parents to help them protect the family home. She really made us all feel at ease, especially my parents. We had no idea what we could do to protect Mum and Dad. Having set up trusts and Lasting Power of Attorney’s, Mum and Dad can get on with their lives without worrying, knowing everything is now in place. Thank you Jane! Mrs Boyle and family, Ecclesfield

STOCKSBRIDGE PS THANKYOU
Dear Sir
The season is now over and we have finished in a comfortable thirteenth position with 43 points, which wasn’t looking likely for most of the season. however a good run of results from the end of February made it possible, so credit to the managers and players for sticking to their task. Having taken on the chairmans role a year earlier than expected it has been a good experience overall and this is mainly down to the good team of volunteers that are involved with the club .Administration staff ,team managers, groundsmen, maintenance staff, people in the kitchen and hospitality raffle ticket sellers ,turnstile operatives ,website and social media managers ,etc and i would like to say a massive thank you to you all, non league clubs couldn’t survive without you.
I would like to thank everyone who voted for me in the City Council and Ecclesfield Parish elections. Despite the fact that the turnout was far less than 50%, I shall do my best to represent everyone in East Ecclesfield. I look forward to working with my fellow local Councillors for the good of our area. Councillor Victoria Bowden
Stocksbridge christian centre Dear Editor, On 14 July, the Stocksbridge Christian Centre on Cedar Road will celebrate 60 years since the beginning of Christian outreach work on the Whitwell Estate. At 3 PM there will be a special Songs of Praise service to celebrate and commemorate the beginnings of the church to which everyone is invited We will also host a display of photographs, objects and other materials about the history of the church from its beginnings to the current day. We are looking for photographs of the Whitwell Estate area before the estate was laid out, the construction of the estate and the church, the Stocksbridge School (junior and high schools), people such as previous vicars of Bolsterstone and pervious Methodist ministers, etc. If anyone has any photograph which might be of interest, please contact the minister of the Christian Centre, Revd. James H. Grayson, on 230-5171.
Local pub bans smart phones Dear Editor,
Having not been to a certain pub in Stocksbridge Love Corinne & Cynthia for some years, (not because I do not enjoy the pub, more to the fact I am trying to lessen my heavy drinking!) I was told by our jovial local First EPIC meeting Thursday Landlord that the brewery who owns his pub ‘Samuel Smiths’ had now decided to ban the night use of mobile phones. Not just in this pub in Stocksbridge but in all of the brewery’s Public First meeting Thursday night, new Ecclesfield Houses. parish council (EPC) Packed agenda, mainly When I was a regular drinker here there was administrative, new chairperson, vice chair already a ban on the juke box and televisions to committee set ups etc. entertain folks. It’s been a great cooperative time amongst the ten I find the brewery’s decisions a huge puzzle. I have independent councillors. Deciding roles based been in their other pubs in my time and feel that on merit rather than EGO, on skills rather than their policy is a great shame. power plays. I am so proud to be part of this team. The pub is in 2019 needing all the help and Lots to do, first of all sort out the foundations, support that is available. So with these measures pointless building a reformed EPC on boggy from the brewery their public houses are being far ground. Then get the projects started. from helped to thrive. Cllr David Ogle High Green ward EPC
I would also like to thank our sponsors without who we couldn’t function in the way we do Dransfield Properties , GenFab ,Look Local newspaper and everybody else who sponsors kits ,advertising boards ,programme adverts, and also contributors to our 500 club draw we hope you continue your support in the future ,and we would also welcome any other parties on board that came make our club even stronger in the future. Talking of support Thank you to all the fans who have stood by us this season when things haven’t been going so well ,our attendances have increased slightly this season and we will strive to encourage more people to come and watch us next season ,we would love to see even more of the Stocksbridge and surrounding areas at Bracken Moor watching good value for money sport. We are not a club that relies on one benefactor putting their money into the club for survival because we have seen over the years these clubs come and go when they get bored and walk away so we are thankful for everyone who contributes large or small amounts to keep this club up there as the highest placed non league club in South Yorkshire it is not easy but we will keep trying to maintain our standards without jeopardising the future of the club.

Dear Sir/Madam,
Or call: 0114 283 1100
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the people who have supported and entrusted me with their votes for the past 32 year and elected me to serve you on the City and Parish Councils Though after the recent election I was not elected to represent you I will of course still take a keen interest in the problems and affairs of Chapeltown and the wider area and endeavour to assist were I can.
Yours truly Craig Minto

We were overwhelmed by the acts of kindness shown to us. From Stuart Hutton the lorry driver who held back oncoming traffic – saving us from any further collision. Liz Harvey and Joanne Session who provided comfort and support and Thank you. Leon Jukes who was visiting the area, helping to keep us calm until the emergency services arrived. James H. Grayson, Stocksbridge Christian Centre, Cedar Road S36 1AS There was a lot more who offered to help, so this thank you goes out to you too. We are both doing well and are hoping to soon fully recover and be back to good health.

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These QHHG WR EH ÂżOOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

INCREDIBLE FUNDRAISER A local children’s nursery in north Sheffield has been left ‘speechless’ at the support shown by everyone in their recent fundraiser

The annual meet, which this year attracted 450 swimmers entering 2,200 swims, was the club’s 23rd event. Held each year at Ponds Forge International Pool in Sheffield, the swimming gala is a Swim England licensed long-course meet and includes 50m and 100m events in all strokes, plus 200m individual medley events for both girls and boys. As this year’s meet fell over Easter weekend, swimmers were awarded with vibrant Easter-themed medals and there were also spot prizes of chocolate eggs for the winners of selected heats throughout the day. The standard of swimming amongst the competitors was incredibly high, with lots of fast times being achieved across all events and all age groups. Stocksbridge Pentaqua Swimming Club’s own swimmers achieved a fantastic personal best rate of 66% throughout the meet and won an impressive collection of medals.
