SIX HOURS TRAPPED IN CHAIR

AN 87-year-old widow from Stocksbridge was rescued by three mystery young men when they came to her aide after she got stuck in a garden chair for six hours.

On a sunny Sunday in May, Liz Barber was busy tidying up her garden when she decided to sit down and have a rest - but to her shock and surprise the garden seat gave way and she became wedged in the seat, unable to move.

Liz, a Scrabble enthusiast, was utterly stuck with only her pet cat Penny for company. Her only option was to shout for help.

The former Countdown TV contestant was faced with her toughest conundrum since she appeared on the popular daytime TV show in the late 1980s. She shouted and shouted and eventually, six hours later, three mystery young men came to her rescue and called for the

emergency services who had to cut Liz free. Liz, a former radiographer, was taken to hospital where she was given the all clear after x-rays and check-ups. With only scratches and bruises for her troubles, she was reunited with Penny her cat. Liz told Look Local: “I’m ever so grateful to the three wonderful young men who helped me - without them I may still have been stuck in there now!”

Warrants disturb drug related activity in Stannington WARRANTS have been carried out in the Stannington area of Sheffield as part of a day of targeted activity lead by South Yorkshire Police’s Deepcar Team. Officers seized a quantity of cannabis, an amount of cash, a hammer and a BB gun from a property on Deer Park Road on Thursday May 9. Members of the Sheffield Tasking Team gained entry to the property through a main door, but also removed an internal metal ‘gate’ which had been installed by the tenant. Neighbourhood officers also carried out raids at a second address on Deer Park Road and are working with local authorities on follow-up action. Sergeant Kieran Frain from the Deepcar Policing Team who organised the day of action said: “These warrants were planned to destabilise drug-related

criminality that we know is happening in the area. “I want this action to be a warning to people causing issues within this peaceful community that we are watching and we will be taking further action to deal with individuals.

Later in the evening the neighbourhood team, conducted an alcohol test-purchase operation on six licenced premises in the Stannington area; five of the premises visited passed.

In addition to the warrants, the team also carried out a range of engagement activity, including extra patrols and a pop in police station at Hall Park Head Community Centre.

Sgt Frain added: “We’ve had officers out engaging with the public, chatting to local people and getting to know more about the community groups and volunteers that exist in Stannington. This is really important to us as a neighbourhood policing team because building relationships will help us tackle key problems such as anti-social behaviour.

Sheffield City Council were also involved in the day of action, with officers being joined by staff from housing, parking and environmental services. The Youth Justice Unit also worked with PCSO’s to address anti-social behaviour from identified young residents by issuing acceptable behaviour contracts.

“One really exciting new partnership is the involvement of SWFC Kicks – which is a grassroots football project – they joined us to speak to young people and encourage them to get involved in sport. These guys will hopefully become a permanent fixture in the area, so if you see them, come and say hello and get involved.

Joan steps back in time STOCKSBRIDGE resident Joan Doyle, 97, recently made a visit back to her birth place in Hessle with wonderful results thanks to volunteers working on a local community project. Joan is currently recording her life story with community volunteer Samantha Devine, on the lottery funded TIME project. Joan also has a relative in Hull that she had never met face to face. Their lives diverged years ago but had been brought back together through family history research. It soon became clear that a visit to Hessle and Hull would be a wonderful thing to do. Joan met long-lost relative Angela for the first time whilst having afternoon high tea at the Royal Hotel in Hull. Over coffee and scones, they were able to swap stories and catch up. Joan then made the short trip onto Hessle to try and find the house that she had grown up in. The area has changed beyond recognition since Joan lived there, with what were open fields and a few scattered buildings now being a thriving Hull suburb. Eventually they found their way down a tiny lane to the driveway of North Lodge, the house where Joan spent her happy childhood some 80 years ago.

On talking to a neighbour they discovered the house had recently been sold and was currently empty. As Joan stepped out of the car and walked down the drive she was aghast, the house had barely changed and was just as beautiful. Joan stepped into spot where she had held her wedding party during the second world war in 1941. Joan’s new husband was on leave from the Navy at the time and their first child was born in this house. A happy Joan told Look Local: “It was so wonderful, I never expected to see it like that. I expected it to have changed. It was so very special to me. “Meeting Angela too has been a very special moment and I am so grateful to the two volunteers who helped it all to happen.” Life Story worker Samantha said: “It is easy to go that extra mile for amazing people like Joan. I think we have proved too that sometimes having that little bit of ‘let’s do this’ can bring surprising results.” Both volunteers carry out work for Stocksbridge Community Care Group which organises social drop ins, life story work, friendly visitor scheme, memory cafes and musical memory events in the area. More information can be obtained by contacting them on 0114 2830141.

TAKE ACTION AGAINST ADDICTION

Jess, 33, began tackling her substance use in 2014, but after a relapse last year, she decided to change her outlook. She said matter-of-factly: “I could have died at least four times. It’s a miracle that I made it past the age of 30. I put my family through Hell and I put my wife through Hell. I put my previous employers in an awkward situation that they never should have had to handle. Jess explained how her drug and alcohol use has taken different forms over the years, but when she overdosed on benzodiazepines in 2018, the on-duty psychiatrist at A&E referred her to Addaction.

“As I began to get on top of things and leave a job that was causing me stress - I decided that I needed time

“After a bit of planning, I got a flight to Lourdes in France and began the Camino De Santiago - an 800 km trek through France and Northern Spain. I decided to do it solo, without drugs, booze and the stress of everyday life. I wanted to get to know Jess again because I know she’s inside me somewhere, terrified to come out to the world.â€? Jess continued: “It turned out to be true that isolation was cathartic for me. My parents and my wife could only call me at the start and the end of each day when I was in some sort of accommodation. Aside from that, I was completely alone. That wasn’t ideal when I fell in a river though‌ but it was my own fault for taking a shortcut!

Chair of Sheffield-based charity awarded prestigious fellowship THE chair of a Sheffield-based rare disease charity has received a prestigious award for his work. Dr Iain Armstrong, chair of the Chapeltown-based Pulmonary Hypertension Association UK (PHA UK), was recognised with a Fellowship Award by the Royal College of Nursing (RCN), the highest award it can give. Iain, who lives in Stocksbridge, also works as a nurse consultant within the Sheffield Pulmonary Vascular Disease Unit, a specialist pulmonary hypertension service based at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital. The fellowship was awarded at the RCN annual Congress in Liverpool on Sunday May 19. It is given to individuals who have ‘made an exceptional commitment to advancing the science and practice of nursing and the improvement of health care’. Only a small number of Fellows and Honorary Fellows are elected each year. Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a rare, serious disease affecting the heart and lungs. Iain founded the PHA UK in 1999 after recognising the need for a charity to support people diagnosed with the condition, which affects just 7,000 people in the UK. The organisation now has over 4,500 members and funds medical research and health education initiatives

to promote better awareness, diagnosis and treatment of PH. Nominations for individuals to receive an RCN Fellowship are made by members of the RCN and are accompanied by testimonials from colleagues or associates. Iain, who also volunteers for the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association in his spare time, said: “I was genuinely surprised and humbled to hear about the award. To be recommended by your colleagues in the area you’ve worked in for 30 years is special – I don’t think any recognition can surpass that. “After leaving school with one O-level and being told I wouldn’t make it, I’m very proud of what I’ve achieved.” Iain was the first nurse consultant to work in pulmonary vascular disease after enrolling in 1982. Professor David Kiely, director of the Sheffield Pulmonary Vascular Disease Unit at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, said: “Iain is a fantastic colleague and I have been privileged to have worked with him for nearly 20 years. The award of the highly prestigious Fellowship from the Royal College of Nursing reflects a professional career dedicated to supporting people affected by pulmonary hypertension.

“He remains an inspiration to nursing and medical staff both nationally and internationally and as the Chair of the PHA UK he has pioneered the development of a support network for people affected by pulmonary hypertension.” Carl Harries, clinical nurse specialist in pulmonary hypertension at the Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospital in London, who nominated Iain for the award, said: “Iain’s commitment to patients and raising awareness of PH as a rare condition has really stood out to me. He has a great understanding of their needs, and a huge determination to fight their corner.” “The way Iain balances his clinical work with his charity commitments is exceptional and he is responsible for the strength of the PHA UK within the public domain.” Kay Yeowart, co-founder of the PHA UK, added: “Iain has dedicated much of his life to his patients and charity members’ wellbeing, giving enormous amounts of his personal time to the PHA UK. Through the charity and his work, he has enhanced the lives of many patients and their families. “Iain has the enthusiasm to continue working with others to ensure the success of the charity for many years to come.”

We know that planning for the future is a very personal matter. Not everyone is able or wants to travel to an appointment in town to sort out their affairs. We can visit you at a convenient time in the privacy and comfort of your own home to discuss your unique circumstances.

A visit and consultation is completely free and you are under no obligation to do anything. If you decide to make any arrangements you can be safe in the knowledge that all our professional services and work are fully insured and we are members of the Society of Will Writers, so all our clients are assured of the

Jane came to see my parents to help them protect the family home. She really made us all feel at ease, especially my parents. We had no idea what we could do to protect Mum and Dad. Having set up trusts and Lasting Power of Attorney’s, Mum and Dad can get on with their lives without worrying, knowing everything is now in place. Thank you Jane!

Ecclesfield Parish Council meeting

Ec

Last Thursdays meeting at the Ecclesfield Parish Council was amazing, thank you to all the public that attended this historic and positive event, never seen the chamber so full. Cllr Terry Bawden has been elected chair for the next 12 months. He gave a rousing speech focused on community, offering all the independents hands in co-operation to the old guard party political councillors. You could feel the positive energy in the room as positions were allocated according to merit and need, not power plays or petty one-upmanship. The meeting was long and packed with legally compulsory agenda items, but went well and set our New EPC on the right path for the next four years. June’s meeting will see the introduction of community first working groups, focusing on youth, family, 50+ projects. I am very optimistic for our EPC’s next four years, loads to sort out, but we have a great team in place with a highly qualified clerk to advise us on technical details. A few bruised party political egos in the room but they will fade away in to the shadows of best forgotten history. Cllr Dave Ogle, High Green ward

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These QHHG WR EH ÂżOOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to The so see how ‘straights’ are formed.

FOR ALL TYPES OF BUILDING & CONSTRUCTION WORKS

A cottage garden can bring the feel of the country into any space and with the right plants and layout can be easily created around any style or age of property. Informal in looks and packed with plants, cottage gardens are ideal for anyone wishing to grow lots of plants in a small area. Although relaxed and unstructured in appearance there are some golden rules that apply when creating a cottage garden Keep it relatively small in size Avoid straight lines - so have curved beds and winding paths Let plants spill over onto paths and walkways Choose path materials that complement your home and garden so traditional materials such as brick, stone and gravel If you can, give the garden a backdrop with hedges, rustic fencing or a wall Make it your own with structural focal points such as arbours, obelisks and small trees and shrubs Have a good mix of plants and repeat plants and colours to create a flow and harmony When it comes to plant selection pick ones that are robust and tough as there is lots of competition for space in a cottage garden and don’t forget to add in scented plants like honeysuckle, roses and lavenders. Also, a cottage garden looks amazing in summer but will have a quiet season in winter so make sure you plant winter and spring bulbs to give colour all year round. Classic cottage plants include ones that provide a bit of height such as delphiniums, lupins, foxgloves and hollyhocks which are usually scattered through the borders. Roses are also essential – both bush and climbers – and the more highly scented the better. Try using perennials rather than annuals. Perennials come back each year and are much less work – which is why roses, geraniums and lavender are popular choices. And don’t forget to deadhead – every couple of days in the summer – to keep the garden looking fresh and colourful and to help plants to produce more flowers.

Gardening Feature Sun and colour are two things that the garden is benefiting from this month, but as the longest day of year arrives the gardening ‘to do’ list also gets longer. Here’s what the experts say ... June 21st is the longest day of the year, and the extra light and warmth encourages the garden to put on an exuberant burst of growth. But this extra light and warmth also means weeds will sprout up from seemingly nowhere. Keep on top of them by hoeing regularly in dry conditions. RHS

Summer is finally here – the sun is shining, the birds are singing and the garden is bursting into life. It’s time to care for your roses, so keep an eye out for black spot and aphid attacks and treat immediately. Deadhead any faded flowers to encourage fresh buds to grow and apply a rose fertiliser after the first flush of flowers. You need to stake growing plants such as Delphiniums, Hollyhocks and Lupins or tie them to walls and fences. The side shoots of climbers should also be tied in to train them along trellis or wire supports. Don’t forget to make sure you also keep weeds down.

They use up vital nutrients and moisture that are needed by the plants. David Domoney, TV gardener and presenter

Spencer Poppleton, Joseph Tipping and Joe Littlewood were instrumental in moving the ball quickly and safely, Sam North, Alex Coates and Ed Measures were immense in driving in to the line. Bailey Thompson broke tackles throughout the match and was a menace on the left wing. Poppleton kicked the conversion and, despite having the advantage of the slope, for 25 minutes Hawks dominated and wouldn’t let the Rangers out of their own half. Will Burns and David Sedgewick terrorised the Stanley line and Coates, Measures and Drewery were defensively and offensively aggressive throughout. The half ended with two tries for Stanley completely against the run of play and fortunate in the extreme. However, the second

half held no fears for the Hawks as their dominance of the first suggested. The second half started with a Hawks try, Sam Eaden scything through the line from 30 metres out to touch down in the corner. Another exemplary extra two from out wide by Poppleton drew the teams level. Again, Hawks dominated, only last ditch tackling and despairing defence seemed to prevent the score. That did eventually arrive after Joe Littlewood, marauding about on the fifth tackle, flicked the ball out of contact to Callan Drewery who touched down in the corner. Poppleton again scored the extras from wide out left and Hawks had the match under control. Despite the Rangers scoring a try, under somewhat dubious circumstances, the missed conversion and Hawks total dominance with the ball ensure a victory that was nowhere near as close as the score suggested. This was an excellent team performance and special mention has to be made for Owen Riches who, despite a damaged shoulder, kept Rangers at bay for a large part of the second half. Speedy recovery Owen.

Student footballers claim international silverware FOOTBALLERS from Barnsley College s Sports Academy brought home four trophies from their annual trip to Spain for the Copa Maresme Cup tournament during the Easter break. 44 students travelled to the Catalan capital of Barcelona for the international competition, run by German organisation Komm Mit. The trip allowed the students to test themselves against high-quality European opposition in a tournament environment, whilst taking the opportunity to experience other cultures. On the field, the male first team finished runners-up after losing out in the final to strong German opposition in front of a packed stadium. The male first team beat the male sec-

ond team on the road to the final. Meanwhile the female team returned home with the third place trophy. There were individual honours for students Amy Woodruff and Billy Goose who finished as the tournament’s top goal scorers for their age groups. Luke Swaby, 18, a Level 3 Sport student, said: “The atmosphere in all the games was amazing. The feeling when our team scored the winning goal in the last 16 of the tournament was immense; I’ve never felt anything like it. “To have the opportunity to go to a tournament on such a large scale is rare, so many memories were taken away from the trip and will never be forgotten.”

Luke Forgione, Performance and Athlete Development Co-ordinator, added: “Success is sometimes measured by trophies, but the experience and development students gained from the trip is much more of a success. “The trip will hopefully be a lasting memory for those students leaving us this year and they will look back on their time at the College fondly. For those who are returning, we hope they will be keen to register for the 2020 tournament.” To find out more about the great opportunities available within our Sports Academy, contact Luke Forgione by calling 01226 216 387, emailing l.forgione@barnsley.ac.uk, or visiting www.barnsley.ac.uk

Sheffield Shapes Invictus UK Trials: Plans Revealed

Local Sport exploration of Sheffield’s history. A military village will appear in Devonshire Green during the week, with military equipment on display and an opportunity to explore the range of activities open to Servicemen and women. With the Armed Forces in mind, an employment forum will investigate how the Nation can better employ and utilise the skills of those who leave the Armed Forces, while an employment fair, hosted by the Career Transition Partnership, will allow Invictus UK Trials competitors to explore career opportunities available. A Recovery and Rehabilitation Symposium will bring military injury and recovery experts together to discuss various aspects of the subject, including the long-term needs of those affected by military service. SHEFFIELD will gain another notch on its sporting belt this summer as it hosts the first ever Invictus UK Trials. Among other claims to fame, the City is the undisputable home of World Snooker. Now Sheffield will see almost 500 wounded, injured or sick military personnel and veterans compete in an adaptive multi-sport championship and wider programme of activity. Invictus UK, presented by BAE Systems, have been working closely on the delivery of the Invictus UK Trials Sheffield 2019, funded by the Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust. The Invictus UK partnership comprising Help for Heroes, the Ministry of Defence and the Royal British Legion, will run from 22-26 July, across Sheffield’s top sporting venues and other locations. Over five days 475 competitors, supported by their friends, family and local community, will take part in up to nine sports – Archery, Athletics, Cycling, Indoor Rowing, Powerlifting, Sitting Volleyball, Swimming, Wheelchair Basketball and Wheelchair Rugby. Martin Colclough of Help for Heroes and Chef de Mission of Team UK for Invictus UK, said: “For those competing who were

once prepared to put their lives second, the Invictus UK Trials are an opportunity for a second chance at life. Sport is a powerful tool in the recovery journeys of those with injuries and illnesses attributable to their service in the Armed Forces. We are proud to support them and their families on that journey, with the valued backing of Sheffield City Council and local industry.” Those who compete in the Invictus UK Trials can put themselves forward for consideration to become part of Team UK for the Invictus Games The Hague 2020. Selection in the UK is based on potential recovery benefit, attitude and commitment as well as performance. All competitors, whether selected to represent the UK at the Invictus Games or not, will be offered the opportunity to represent Team UK in different ways, at other sporting events or in local clubs. Councillor Mary Lea, Cabinet Member for Culture, Parks and Leisure at Sheffield City Council, said: “We are proud to support the Invictus UK Trials and even prouder to be the first city to host this extraordinary event. The competition perfectly reflects Sheffield’s rich military history, proud sporting credentials and unrivalled cultural offer. We can’t think of a better way to cel-

ebrate all of that than in championing our deserving current and former Armed Forces and supporting them to lead fulfilling lives. I look forward to welcoming competitors and their families and friends from across the UK, to supporting them on their journey and to seeing many local people taking part and embracing the fantastic experiences the Invictus UK Trials will bring to Sheffield.” As well as a packed sports schedule, a wider programme of activity will take place across the City, supported by Invictus UK’s delivery partners and Sheffield organisations. An opening event will mark the start of the Trials, with an exciting announcement to follow soon on what it will include and how local people can get involved. A celebration of how art can aid recovery will see performances of the West End show Soldier On at the Oval Hall, City Hall, from award-winning theatre company The Soldier’s Art Academy CIC. Dance and acting workshops will also be on offer aiming to bring local students and veteran performers together, and a number of photographers whose work addresses conflict and conflict resolution will be displayed around the city, which includes

local veterans. Continuing the art theme, exhibition Art in the Aftermath will showcase the work of former servicemen suffering from mental and physical health issues, including local artists Dougie Adams and Stewart Hill, hosted by charity Style for Soldiers and with support from its ambassadors, actor Charles Dance and British model David Gandy. Renowned author Sir Michael Morpurgo will be interviewed by TV presenter and wheelchair basketball player Ade Adepitan as the headline element of the event’s literary festival, which will also feature talks and readings from wounded military authors. Charity There But Not There will be working with Learn Sheffield and local Blitz historian Richard Godley to engage schools in the history behind their ‘Tommies’. International children’s charity Never Such Innocence is running an arts competition combining poetry, art, song and speech to engage competitors’ families and young people from across Sheffield to play a creative part in the Trials. The project is open to all young people aged 9-18. Winning works will be showcased across the City. Additional to the arts activity, the Royal British Legion will host the Poppy Quest; a family friendly

Antony Baines, Director of Operations at The Royal British Legion and Invictus UK Board Member said: “Behind every Team UK member, there are friends, families and carers who have helped get them to the start line. A lifechanging injury or illness has a huge impact on both the individual and those around them. The wider programme will complement the sports at the Invictus UK Trials and engage those loved ones in other activities alongside the local community who we have had so much support from and are keen to involve.” Much of this programme will include the local Sheffield community and opportunities on how to get involved will be announced soon. Many parties are working together to make the Invictus UK Trials a success for all involved. Rear Admiral Jim Macleod, Head of Invictus UK, said: “Invictus UK is supported by a number of partners all helping Team UK competitors to reach their potential. With the support of BAE Systems, the Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust and others, the 475 Veterans and serving personnel registered to compete at the Trials have been offered the opportunity to take a big step forward in their recovery journeys. We are delighted to be working with organisations which share our values in providing the best possible experience for our wounded.” More information will be released in the coming weeks with opportunities for local people to get involved and join in with the Invictus UK Trials Sheffield 2019 at welcometosheffield.co.uk.

TIGERS MOUNT STUNNING COMEBACK SHEFFIELD fought back from a ten-point deficit to beat Berwick 46-44 at Owlerton. It means it’s two out of two in the Championship for the Tigers on home shale who had to dig deep in tricky conditions. Rain fell throughout the meeting - but the Owlerton outfit weren’t going to let that dampen their spirits. Ty Proctor (Wrist) and Zaine Kennedy (Concussion) were both ruled out following crashes in the away fixture on Saturday - but Tigers showed plenty of determination to add three more league points to their tally. They conceded three heat advantages in the opening races as the Bandits went ten points up early doors.

But back-to-back race wins and a 5-1 from Danny King and tactical substitute Kyle Howarth gave the visitors something to think about. Kasper Andersen and guest reserve Nathan Greaves combined for another maximum in the eighth before fellow guest Cameron Heeps led a 4-2 in the ninth to move within two. Tigers moved back level with their opponents before hitting the front for the first time as King and Howarth registered another 5-1 in Heat 13. Berwick weren’t done though and responded with a maximum of their own to take things to a last heat decider for the second successive week at Owlerton.

But No.1 King showed his class once more as he produced a stunning ride to work his way past Dany Gappmaier.

“We’re still not fully firing yet and we had two riders missing today, but the guests came in at short notice and helped us get the job done.

And with Howarth getting the better of Aaron Summers for a vital third place, Tigers snatched a last gasp victory.

“Cameron (Heeps) was fantastic and Nathan (Greaves) battled hard and they contributed to a gutsy performance in the end.”

Sheffield co-promoter Damien Bates said: “Full credit to both teams; conditions weren’t the easiest but not one rider moaned, they all got on with it and to have the meeting done in an hour and 15 minutes deserves a lot of credit for all involved.

Sheffield travel to Glasgow for the second leg of their Knockout Cup tie a week on Tuesday (May 28) with the next action at Owlerton on Sunday, June 2 against Scunthorpe (4pm).

“It was another great battle between these two teams and of course we’re delighted to get the win in the end. “I had my head in my hands after the first three races but to come back like we did, in tough conditions as well, I’m really happy.

SHEFFIELD 46: Danny King 12, Kyle Howarth 11+2, Cameron Heeps 11, Broc Nicol 5, Kasper Andersen 4, Nathan Greaves 2+1, Drew Kemp 1. BERWICK 44: Dany Gappmaier 14+1, Jordan Stewart 9+2, Aaron Summers 7+1, Kevin Doolan 6+1, Nikolaj Busk Jakobsen 5, Leon Flint 3+2, Jye Etheridge R/R.

hard to come by and with the father-son combination in full flow, Andy Hibbert and Joe Hibbert put Stocksbridge straight onto the driving seat. Joe Hibbert was simply too quick for the batsmen who struggled to lay bat on ball, Andy Hibbert went through his box of tricks outwitting the batters and the wickets started to tumble.

Local Sport

Elliot Freeman who had displayed some tremendous fielding got the first wicket running out the opener. Joe Hibbert then picked up two thoroughly deserved wickets, a spell which on another day could’ve led to more. Andy Hibbert claimed his first thanks to the trusty hands of Liam Grayson at first slip. The change bowlers then came on and there was no let up for the batsmen. Les Harris helped himself to a quick fire three wickets with Jake Vickers and Jack Newton both picking up one wicket each. At 53-8 the innings looked all but over, until the lower order scrambled together fantastically to push the total up to a more respectable 117 all out. In reply, Stocksbridge felt confident of reaching the total however with last weeks performance in the back of their mind, knew that they had won nothing yet. The opening pair of Matt Price and Jack Newton soon settled Stocksbridge nerves. The pair regularly found the boundaries with Newton spraying the ball to all parts. Newton passed his half century before falling the following over for an excellent 59. Price then departed moments later thanks to excellent one handed diving catch at Gully. Steve Perry and Liam Grayson steadied the ship following two quick wickets and Stocksbridge were galloping towards victory. Perry was the next to go but Grayson who had scored easily from the off, made a quick fire 31 before being bowled leaving Stocksbridge requiring one to win. Youngster Elliot Freeman joined Jack Lyons at the crease and Freeman drove threw the covers for a single to take Stocksbridge to a six-wicket victory. Stocksbridge 2nd XI 175 all out (Chris Thwaites 42*, Bob Newton 34, Callum Haywood 33) Sheffield Centrailians 2nd XI 177-7 (Chris Thwaites 3-38, Harry Hurst 3-53) Next week, the first XI travel to Sheffield Medics looking to extend there early lead at the top of the Division One table. The second XI host Ridgeway hoping to get back to winning ways. Stocksbridge Cricket Club committee would like to thank everyone who voted for us in the recent Stocksbridge Town Council Community Infrastructure Levy fund ballot. To say we are overwhelmed is an understatement. As discussed during the presentation, this is only a small portion of what is required for a new pavilion, but it is more than a fantastic start. Watch this space for information coming soon as to how you can help us further!

GOLF NEWS ATHLETES from Penistone Footpath runners had a busy weekend competing in the first track and field meeting of the season and also had two teams taking part in the challenging Calderdale Way relay. A MIXED first two weeks for Stocksbridge’s Golf League Team. The Sheffield Union of Golf Clubs league season started two weeks ago with Stocksbridge competing in Division Four. The team played its first match away to Lees Hall Golf Club on a wet, misty and cold evening on May 8. It was difficult conditions for playing golf and home advantage certainly counted for the Lees Hall team who won the fixture 7-1. Liam O’Sullivan, Matt Sedgwick and Peter Finney all lost their matches, albeit closely in each one, whilst Sam Sharman managed a half. The same four players competed in the second match on May 15 and fared much better with a draw at home to Bawtry. Liam O’Sullivan and Peter Finney both won their matches comfortably, whilst Matt Sedgwick and Sam Sharman both lost. The four points from the fixture have lifted Stocksbridge up into fourth place in their league. On the same day the Dragons competed for the Veterans Cup, with last year’s Captain, Frank Milnes (18), coming out on top with a clear winning margin of 37 points. A. Peers (21) was second with 35 points and J. Moss (21) came third with 33 points. The Gents Midweek Medal took place on May 16 with T. Stowe (22) winning with 37 points. J. Delamore (24) was second with 35 points and A. Moseley (15) was third with 34 points. Saturday May 18 saw the Gents Section competing in the Jubilee Cup, a pairs stroke play better ball competition with a 90% handicap allowance. Despite mixed weather the scoring was excellent, with S. Murphy and A. Peers winning with an impressive net 55 shots. T. Moseley and G. Siddons came second with a net 58 and A. Howe and M. Taylor came third with a net 58. Sunday May 12 saw better weather and course conditions. The Ladies Section played Ladies Ping Qualifier with Helen and Teri Moffett wining with 40 points. Hilja and Liana O’ Sullivan were second with 38 points and Eunice Turner and Heather Evans were third with 36 points.
