Blue lights boxing match raises over £10K OFFICERS from South Yorkshire Police and firefighters from South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue have battled it out in the ring to raise money for Hallam FM’s Cash for Kids charity. Eleven police officers and 11 firefighters went head to head in the charity-boxing match on Friday May 17 at the Niagara Conference and Leisure Centre in Hillsborough. Hallam FM’s Cash for Kids is a local charity that helps disadvantaged and disabled children across South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw. Funding and grants are provided to community projects that support children who are suffering from poverty, abuse, neglect or a short life expectancy. Sergeant Ben Hall from the Burngreave Neighbourhood Policing Team in Sheffield organised the event with police driver trainer Steve Dakin and PC Darren Mckenna. Sgt Hall also provided weekly training to the officers taking part at the Ecclesfield Gym.
Ten of the 11 officers had no previous fighting or boxing experience and have trained every week since January- this was all completed in the officer’s personal time. Fighting in the ‘blue corner’ for SYP were PC Dan Fox, PC Dan Sawka, PC Nicole Palmowski, PC Josh Metcalfe, PC Alex Kirby, Sgt Jon Reville, PC Paula Sales, PC Alan Jepson, PC Jess Pearce and Chief Inspectors Stuart Walne and Paul Ferguson. Sgt Hall said: “I am extremely proud of all of the officers who took part, they all dedicated their personal time to train and learn the skills required for the competition. “The idea for the match started at my local boxing club where I train. I was talking to a firefighter who trains there too and we thought it would be a good idea along with an opportunity to raise some money for a good cause. We didn’t think we would raise this much, it’s amazing.” Alongside ticket sales, money was also raised through a raffle and the
AFC Church lift the cup AFC Penistone Church lifted the The Sheffield & Hallamshire County FA Association Cup on Saturday.
Denaby did rally in the second half but High’s second goal in the 72nd minute halted any chance of a comeback.
Playing against Denaby Main at Sheffield Wednesday’s Hillsborough Stadium, the Penistone outfit produced a blitz in the first half, racing into a 4-0 lead by half time.
AFC Church manager Steve Lenthall commented after the game: “We were superb today, I thought the lads were absolutely brilliant from the word go.
It wasn’t until the 35th minute that Church scored their first through Tim Council. But the floodgates then opened and Brad Kemp scored immediately from the restart.
“It was a long time to wait, five weeks from our last league game, so credit to our lads for their commitment for training twice a week to keep fitness levels up to be match ready for the pitch at Hillsborough and every one of the lads put a great shift in on the day.”
Just five minutes later, Council added his second before Reece High made it four just before the break.

The final results were five wins to the fire service, four wins to the Police and two draws.
South Yorkshire Police would like to congratulate all those involved, thank Sgt Hall, PC McKenna and Steve Dakin for their commitment in making
this night a success and for all colleagues, family and friends who supported them.
Busy week at golf club
IT’S been a busy week of competitions at Stocksbridge Golf Club. It started on May 22 with the Dragons Section Horace Marklew Putter competition. K. Meegan (19) was a convincing winner with a net 60. I. Batty (17) and D. Broadhurst (18) both finished on a net 66, but the former took second with a better back nine. That evening the League team played Grange Park Golf Club at home, finishing the match at four points for each team. Liam O’Sullivan and Peter Finney both won their matches, with Matt Sedgwick and Dave Phillips losing.
The result consolidates the League team’s position in mid table. Saturday May 25 saw the Russell Bradbury Trophy take place with a strong field of nearly 70 players. The format was stroke play and J. Moss (21) won a tightly fought competition with a net 62. M. Tingle (14) was second with a net 63 and K. Harris (21) came third with a net 64. Chris Dale (4) scored the best gross with a 69 and came fourth overall. His round included an impressive four birdies. Bank Holiday Monday saw the gents and ladies sections join forces in the Millennium Trophy. The competition is a mixed pairs, al-
ternate shot format with only a half combined handicap allowance. In tricky conditions with strong winds and occasional showers, the scoring was understandably higher than usual for such a format. The eventual winners were Karl Harris and Bev Sykes (pictured in the centre with the club captains on either side) with a net score of 70.5. In second place were Liana O’Sullivan and Richard Grimmer with a net 72. Gents and Ladies Captains Steven Haigh and Alison Sedgwick were third with a net 72.5.
