VOLUNTEERS REVAMP SCHOOL

THIS week 30 volunteers from M&S Meadowhall joined Stocksbridge Junior School to help reinvigorate their indoor and outdoor learning spaces by clearing rooms, painting and decorating, as well as digging, weeding and planting flowers and vegetable beds.

Stocksbridge Junior School works to enrich the lives of pupils in the local community in Sheffield by creating a diverse learning environment and mixing traditional lessons with alternative learning sessions to build on the children’s life skills. The school has been an integral part of the community for 56 years and has hosted everything from summer fêtes to festive fayres. Stocksbridge Junior School reached out to M&S Meadowhall for support from their team as they needed funding and volunteers to renovate the garden and school bungalow so it can be better used for extracurricular learning, breakfast clubs and after school clubs. The M&S volunteer team rolled up their sleeves and got to work with landscaping the outdoor space and decorating the indoor learning areas. After they had completed the project, the chil-

dren excitedly explored their new learning spaces and were very happy with the outcome. The volunteers were 30 of 5,000 colleagues from more than 600 M&S stores across the UK, who took part in a week-long volunteering drive, committing over 40,000 hours to projects that work tirelessly to improve the lives of children, young people and families across the UK. The projects selected all help young people as a group that M&S and its customers feels passionate about supporting. As well as Stocksbridge Junior School, M&S is working with 400 organisations including schools, food banks, youth clubs and education charities to create positive outcomes for thousands of young people across the UK. Dave Cater, Plan A Community Champion at M&S Meadowhall said: “We’re really proud to be coming together as a team to support Stocksbridge Junior School. At M&S Meadowhall we care passionately about supporting young people in our community. The education of young people is something we know our customers care about too and we were really pleased to be able to get stuck into decorating their learning ar-

eas. Volunteering makes a profound difference to communities, and we believe that lots of small actions from lots of people creates a lasting impact to initiatives that do so much good for young people in Sheffield”.

CHILDREN at Royd Nursery Infant School took part in a science afternoon and invited parents and carers in to carry out a range of practical experiments. MORE GOOD NEWS FOR PENISTONE LEISURE CENTRE

PENISTONE Leisure Centre has further good news to share after securing a 30-year lease two weeks ago. The first bit of good news is that they have been granted planning permission to make the changes they have planned to the Leisure Centre. A spokesperson said: “This is fantastic news, it means the dream can really be a reality. We’ve also been awarded £60k of funding from Section 106! Which is a nice big chunk of the money we need to get part one of our refurbishment plan underway!” The Section 106 Fund is money which has been sought from housing developers who have built new homes in the area. The money is then allocated in order to maintain or improve community amenities

which may experience increased pressure by the addition of the homes. The centre has also now submitted an application for £166,000 of funding from EPIP (East Peak Innovation Partnership) which, if successful, will mean all of the funding required to complete the layout and structural work of phase one of the development plan. The proposed works have recently been put out to tender, with quotes coming back more expensive than anticipated. As such, certain aspects of the plan have been removed from this part of the project and they now have to fund raise separately in a later project for insulation, decoration, flooring, new toilets and a few other things. If you want to help, you can contact the centre on 01226 763949 or 07526 253100 or email info@penistoneleisurecentre.co.uk

Sheffield charity kicks off a new online challenge set to go viral A NEW charity based in Sheffield set up to fund 100% of the cost of human hair wigs and hairpieces for medical hair loss sufferers has kick-started a new online challenge. They got the challenge underway at the start of June by wearing silly wigs at work for the day to raise awareness and funds so that the charity can provide human hair wigs and hairpieces to cancer and alopecia patients suffering from medical hair loss. The charity’s founder Rachel Burgin told Look Local: “Wear a wig to work day is designed to have fun at work with colleagues at the same time as raising funds and awareness for the charity.

FIRE IN STOCKSBRIDGE

“It is much needed as there is little to no funding of its kind available for medical hair loss patients so we hope to change this with the help of the rest of the U.K. The dream is that wear a wig to work will go viral so we can really make an impact.” Taking part in the challenge simply involves wearing a silly wig to work and uploading your photos to your social media pages and nominate your friends to take on the challenge, not forgetting to add the link for donations.

FIRE crews were called to a fire that started on a settee in Stocksbridge on June 7. The ground floor property on Shay Road was attended at around 8.50pm with three engines from Stocksbridge, Tankersley and Rivelin stations at the scene, although the Rivelin crew were not needed.

To find out more about the charity visit www.routeshairlosssolutions.com or search Routes Hair Loss Solutions on social media

FIRST OFFICIAL ENGAGEMENT FOR NEW PARISH CHAIR DESPITE the torrential rain, the newly-elected chair of Ecclesfield Parish Council, Terry Bawden, took in his first official engagement this week. On Monday June 10, Terry and Cllr Tracy Grantham were amongst the guests of honour at St Mary’s in High Green for the official opening of their Faith Garden. The downpour meant that the plans for a garden party were a wash out. However, the weather did not dampen the wonderful spirits of the children. Cllr Grantham said: “They narrated and sang their hearts out and at times I was moved to tears looking round at

the brightly coloured uniforms and their wonderful smiles. I would like to say what a credit each and every one of those little people are to both their parents and the school. Their welcome and their manners were exemplary and many of them were mesmerised by the ‘bling’ Terry wore so well I might add. “A huge thank you to everyone involved with the event; to Rohon who helped landscape the garden, staff and parents but especially the wonderful children. May the beautiful garden space provide everything it was created to do regardless of what the weather brings!”

Your Letters Dear Editor, I observe that Angela Smith MP (Penistone & Stocksbridge) has flipped political parties, yet again. The Right Honourable lady adds yet another coat colour to her collection, which will soon rival that of Joseph’s amazing technicolour dream coat. Her actions are both an embarrassment and disrespectful to the electorate of Penistone and Stocksbridge. Angela, do the honourable thing and step down to give us a by-election. Christine Marshall

Grooming Far, far too many young lads are being groomed in my community. Groomed to deal in drugs - I use the word groomed as that’s exactly what’s happening.

I recall not long ago reading about a motorist getting a parking ticket for parking on the pavement outside his house so the next day he parked legally on the road and was awoken by the driver of a bus asking him to remove his car as it was blocking the road and buses could not get past - precisely why he had parked on the pavement in the first place.

Email us at: enquiries@looklocal.org.uk

Cllr Mike Levery, Angela Smith refused to call a by-election when I Liberal Democrats, emailed her, she stated her constituents voted for West Ecclesfield Ward her first and foremost and the party secondly. Well, I challenge her again to test that statement and call a by-election.

Regards, Stephen Johnson

I think I know that there will be no by-election and we must have this MP represent us whether we like it or not. She is now a pygmy within the political

ROLL UP FOR SUMMER FAYRE

AS Stocksbridge Community Leisure Centre now reaches the sixth annual Summer Fayre they have gone bigger and better.

Not only providing new rides and attractions for all the family but this year extending the fayre and creating a great new community music festival - ‘Into The Valley’. The new music festival will run all day and night, 12pm to 9pm, with refreshments available throughout this time and different acts from local bands to some bigger names that also played at the Tour De Yorkshire event down at Fox Valley in 2017. They will also be showing live Women’s World Cup in the sports hall with a big screen and seating provided - let’s hope the ladies do

us proud and get through to the later stages! The day is to offer the local community a summer fayre that all the family can attend whilst also raising needed funds for the centre to make improvements. This also naturally has lead to the event growing year on year with bigger attractions planned this year and of course some music to keep you entertained throughout. It is hoped as many people as possible attend the day and with any luck you can also watch the England Lionesses perform on the big screen in the sports hall. Any questions regarding the Fayre - contact organiser Lee Hible on 0114 2883792 or email sdo@ stocksbridgeclc.co.uk

Saturday evening at Stocksbridge High School with a wide range of local performers including Bolsterstone Male Voice Choir - co-presenters of the music festival with Inyerface Arts - Deepcar Brass Band, Bradfield School Jazz Band and the Bus Pass Buskers. The BBC’s Trisha Cooper returns to compere the show. There will be buskers and a bar selling Bradfield beer. An added attraction this year is a concert featuring young people at the High School on Saturday afternoon. The Valley Kids Make Music event will feature singers and dancers, including choirs from five junior schools, Happy

Hands pre-school group, and young soloists. Local music groups will intersperse with the demo kitchen on the big stage at Fox Valley on the Saturday when performers will also entertain the crowds on the bandstand. Sunday will be entirely devoted to local music, dance and drama groups performing on the big festival stage. The day will be compered by Shaun Doane, lead singer of the Everly Pregnant Brothers. Among Valley 30 slots will be

LOUND Academy Infant and Junior School is gearing up for one of the biggest dates in its calendar as preparations are well underway for Lound Fest 2019! Lound Fest is quite unlike any primary school summer fete that you will have ever seen. With live music across multiple stages, real ale and prosecco bars, it appears to be as much about entertaining the parents as the children. The school’s Deputy Head Richard Cottam writes: “A couple of years ago we started to think about how we could jazz up our tired and lacklustre summer fayre, which had followed the same format for years, probably decades. “We wanted to create an event that would both entice and excite our community. The idea to create a mini, family-friendly music festival began to gather momentum. We are now in our third year and Lound Fest has grown and grown. “It is now firmly established as an event that our children and their families genuinely look forward to.”

• 3:20pm – Robert James Band (blues) • 3:50pm – Stannington MC • 4:10pm – Bolsterstone MVC

Lound Fest 2018 was headlined by The Voice finalist Lucy Milburn and the school is currently busy booking acts for the main stage as well as inviting musicians to showcase their talents on the open-mic and busker stages. Excitingly, this year there will be a ‘Lound And Proud Stage’ which will be used exclusively to showcase the talents of the children of Lound. This goes to show the confidence that the school has in its deep well of ability in music and performing arts. Music co-ordinator Kate Humberstone notes: “Many children at Lound play musical instruments – we also have highly competent dancers and actors. An appreciation of the Arts is something that the school really encourages. Staff have had training on implementing singing in the classroom and Lound Fest 2019 will be a great opportunity for parents to see their children shine.” The school could not put on such an event without the backing of the Chapletown community. Richard Cottam adds, “We are heavily indebted to our generous community, nobody more so than Hi-Point access

who kindly build our incredible main stage, giving the event a genuine festival feel. “This year, Rollem, HP Construction and Singh’s have also backed us with a variety of donations which all ensure that the event raises as much money as possible for the children of the school – we are all aware of the dire financial circumstances that schools are operating under.” The school are throwing open their doors and invite parents and children from the wider community to come along and join the fun. As well as the music, there will be food and drinks, inflatable activities, workshops from Sheffield Wednesday and Whitley Hall cricket club and an array of traditional summer-fete shenanigans such as a good-old coconut shy and “sponge a friend”. It promises to be a truly wonderful event for the Lound community and the people of Chapeltown. Lound Fest 2019 takes place on Friday June 28, 3.15pm to 6.30pm (approx) with advanced tickets available from the school office or pay on the day - £3.50 for adults, children are free.

Tigers sneak win in a thriller

SHEFFIELD closed the gap on Championship leaders Leicester with a 46-44 win over the Lions at Owlerton.

Team boss Simon Stead said: “We knew we were in for a tough one tonight but full credit to the lads - it was a great effort.

It was another nervy, yet entertaining, contest which went down to a last heat decider for the fifth time in the last six home meetings.

“They all worked together as a team, they battled, they dug deep and they got the result we wanted.

And for the third Owlerton outing in succession it was Tigers’ No.1 Danny King who was the Heat 15 hero. The former British Champion made a brilliant start from the inside to wrap up the victory and even with captain Kyle Howarth stuck out at the back, it was enough to ensure Tigers maintained their 100 per cent home record in the league. Things could’ve been different though, but stunning rides from Zaine Kennedy and Broc Nicol in the penultimate race to get by former Sheffield man Connor Mountain denied the visitors a maximum which would’ve seen them retake the lead with one to go.

“We’d like to start making lives a bit easier for ourselves but we’ll take any sort of win against Leicester with the form they’ve been in. Former Lion King dropped just one point against his old employers as Leicester suffered just their second defeat in their last 12 meetings. Ty Proctor recovered from a spill in his opening ride to reel off a hat-trick of straight wins on a much better night for the Aussie. Captain Howarth made a bright start to the meeting but got squeezed out in the opening turns of both Heat 13 and 15.

Home debutant Josh MacDonald showed plenty of encouraging signs, including an impressive race win in Heat Four where he got the better of Richie Worrall to lead a 5-1. Fellow reserve Kennedy also contributed five points while Broc Nicol had to settle for four straight third places with Drew Kemp’s battling two points also proving vital in the final outcome. Tigers travel to Scunthorpe a week on Friday (June 21). SHEFFIELD 46: Danny King 14, Ty Proctor 9, Kyle Howarth 7+1, Zaine Kennedy 5, Josh MacDonald 5, Broc Nicol 4+1, Drew Kemp 2. LEICESTER 44: Ryan Douglas 13, Scott Nicholls 8+1, Ellis Perks 7+1, Cameron Heeps 6+2, Richie Worrall 6+1, Connor Mountain 4+1, Jack Thomas 0.

Media students are top of the league BARNSLEY College Creative Media Production students Matty Hugill, Kyle Walker and Karl Wellbelove have come out on top at the Young Audio and Radio Industry Awards (Young ARIAs), winning the Best in Sport category for their football show on online radio station, The Vibe. The students travelled to London on to attend the Young ARIAs ceremony at the BBC Radio Theatre, where they beat two other shortlisted sport radio shows to

the title of Best in Sport. The prestigious event was hosted by Matt Edmondson and Kiss FM’s Daisy Maskell with the awards presented by big names in the radio industry including Mollie King, Sara Cox, Richie Anderson and Jack Pepper. The three College students run their own radio show, Everything Football, outside of their studies, with the weekly show dissecting the upcoming football fixtures, delving deep into the latest rumours and debates and discuss-

ing tough topics in the world of football. Lee Barber, Barnsley College Media Teacher and Station Manager for The Vibe, suggested that the students enter the Young ARIAs for the work they have done on the show and their coverage of hard hitting subject matter such as sexism and racism in football. Lee said: “This is a brilliant achievement for the lads and brilliant news for The Vibe in general. To have an award-winning show on our schedule this

early on is fantastic. The three students should be very proud of themselves. They have already said they want to win it again next year, their families will be a nervous wreck by the time they’re finished!” Everything Football airs every Friday at 3.30pm on The Vibe www.barnsley.ac.uk/the-vibe For more information about the Media courses available at Barnsley College visit ww.barnsley. ac.uk/media, email info@barnsley.ac.uk or call 01226 216 123.

BIRDWELL WHEELERS BRAVE POOR CONDITIONS THERE were club runs on both days for Birdwell Wheelers last weekend. On Saturday Dave Hudson, Rob Parkes, Alan and Lucy Bullock completed an epic 120 mile route to Ashbourne in Derbyshire taking in over 10,000 feet of climbing. They were joined by Roger Bacon and Marc Peasegood who had to turn back at Grindleford and Bakewell respectively. On Sunday, defying the poor weather forecast Chris Jenkins, Philip Stewart Adams Mark Lafferty and Austin D Watson rode another very hilly route out to Hathersage, covering 80 miles and climbing 6,500 feet. Last Tuesday’s five-mile TT at Thurgoland was unfortunately cancelled due to torrential rain and last Saturday Trevor Mayne’s 50 mile TT in Nottingham was cancelled at the last minute due to road works on the course. Sunday saw the club’s annual hilly Audax event comprising a 65 mile route over Holme Moss, Glossop, Snake Pass and Jawbone Hill at Oughtibridge. More details on this and all the above can be found on the club’s website: http://www.birdwellwheelerscyclingclub. co.uk “
