Golf marathon raises over £1,500 for St Luke's Hospice

STOCKSBRIDGE Golf Club captain Steven Haigh and league team player Matt Sedgwick took on a the hills of their golf club and played 10 rounds in one day to raise money for the nominated charity this year, St Luke’s Hopsice.

Yes, you read that correctly, they played 10 rounds of golf on June 17, teeing off at 3.55am and finishing the gruelling challenge at 9.45pm.

They carried their own clubs and ran as much they physically could manage in order to finish in daylight hours.

They ran and walked 35 miles, completed over 83,000 steps and climbed the equivalent of 600 flights of stairs during the day.

As a result of their efforts they have so far raised over £1,500 pounds and there is still time to donate on their Just Giving page.

Matt Sedgwick said upon completing the challenge: “My feet are sore, my ankles and legs ache, but I am thrilled that we have completed the challenge. Particularly in the weather we have faced.

“The rain at times was welcome to cool us down, but with the strong winds at times it was very difficult to keep going. Knowing that we had generous supporters at the club made it much easier to get to the finish line.”

Club captain Steven Haigh said: “We have set a mark here now and I hope somebody takes the challenge on next year to go one round better! Over this year, lady captain Alison Sedgwick and myself are hoping to raise £6,000 for St Luke’s Hospice and the money donated for this challenge is a big boost to the total.”

Both players are pictured late in the morning, still looking reasonably fresh!
