FAMILY PAY TRIBUTE AS SCOOTER CRASH VICTIM NAMED

A 66-year-old man who tragically died following a collision on Manchester Road on Friday July 5 has been named as Ian Hudson. At around 2.30pm on Friday it is reported that a black Lambretta scooter collided with a yellow Mercedes van at the junction with Rivelin Valley Road. Ian, who was riding the scooter, was taken to hospital where he sadly died shortly after his arrival.

Ian’s family have today paid tribute to him: “We are dev-

astated at the loss of Ian. He was a friendly and outgoing man with many friends across Sheffield.

“He had ridden scooters and motorbikes for many years. In retirement he would regularly drive out to the Peak District with friends, with the Fairholmes Visitor Centre at Derwent Dam a frequent destination. He was also an active member of Sheffield Aces Scooter Club. “We are trying to come to terms with the fact that he is no longer with us and would

encourage anyone with any information to please come forward.” The family are being supported by specialist officers and they ask that their privacy is respected. Officers echo Ian’s family’s request for anyone who saw what happened to get in touch, especially any motorists who were travelling along the A57 with dash cam footage. Please call 101 quoting incident number 477 of 5 July.

MISSING MAN FOUND AND RECOVERING IN HOSPITAL Minod Monger, 23, found just two miles from home after being missing for almost a month A MAN who went missing from Ecclesfield almost a month ago has been pictured recovering in hospital. Minod Monger, 23, was last seen leaving his home address at 9pm on Monday June 10. A dog walker found a man in the woods near Horbury Lane on Saturday. South Yorkshire Police said a paramedic called

to the scene had recognised Mr Monger and alerted police. His family have thanked everyone for sharing the appeal and joining in the search efforts. A spokesperson for South Yorkshire Police commented: “We’d like to thank everyone who has shared our appeals over the last few weeks and supported

our search to Find Minod.” Following a possible sighting, officers began searching Crowden in Derbyshire. A large-scale search operation was underway during the time he was missing, with appeals from members of his family, but he is now said to be doing well.

SCOUT BBQ BRINGS COMMUNITY TOGETHER OVER 100 people gathered at the 25th Sheffield (Ecclesfield) Scout Hut for their AGM and BBQ on Saturday June 29. This annual event, which includes boys and girls at all levels and from a range of different backgrounds, their families and scouting leaders, is a great opportunity to bring together so many different people to help build lasting friendships and bonds within our communities. The event saw the opening of the ‘John Otter Camp Fire Circle’ by the chairman of Ecclesfield Parish Council, Terence Bawden.

The building of the camp fire circle has been the ambition of the group scout leader, John Otter, for many years, and after much hard work it is has finally come to fruition. MP Angela Smith presented the annual Bob Brookes Award to cub scout Emily Nganga. This award is given to the cub or scout that has always tried their hardest, in line with the scout promise, “I promise to do my best.” Andy Bainbridge also presented Beckford Peg Runners Up Trophy to scouts Aiden, Luke and Cade.

Also in attendance was the Lord Mayor, Tony Downing, and the Lady Mayoress. Scout groups are run entirely by volunteers, and with so many young children to support, we are always in need of new leaders. If any adult would like to join 25th Sheffield (Ecclesfield) Scout Group, to get involved in any way or can offer help with fundraising they can be contacted at http://ecclesfieldscouts.org. uk/ Alternatively you can talk to them in person at the Ecclesfield Gala on Sunday September 1.

on that passion. I’ve worked in two different Italian restaurants but now I have the chance to open my own place and I’m really happy with how it’s going,” Hawry smiles. “I want to cook Italian food the proper way – I use a specialist supplier for the Italian ingredients and we get our meat from Crawshaws butchers just next door.” The cosy, family-owned restaurant has welcomed many new diners since opening on May 11, along with some familiar faces that have fol-

lowed Hawry to his new venture. The menu is made up of traditional favourites, from pasta and pizza dishes along with an extensive grill and seafood section. The restaurant is fully licensed and has proved popular so far so booking is recommended. POSITIVE OFSTED NEWS FOR SCHOOL A LOCAL primary school has remained ‘Good’ according to a short inspection by an Ofsted inspector. Deepcar St John’s CE Junior School was visited by an inspector in May. This was the first short inspection carried out since the 155-pupil school was judged to be good in May 2015. “This school continues to be good,” said the inspector in a letter to the head teacher Louise Jones. “The leadership team has maintained the good quality of education in the school since the last inspection.” Parents and carers are positive about Deepcar St John’s. One parent said, ‘This is a wonderful school, where my child has been extremely hap-

py, contented and well educated.’ In their findings, the inspector said: “Pupils take real care with their work. Exercise books are well kept. A great deal of pupils’ work is displayed both in classrooms and around the school, which creates a stimulating learning environment. “Teachers are able to plan a range of activities because pupils eagerly follow instructions and cooperate with their peers. They offer a wide-ranging curriculum and pupils talked enthusiastically about their work. ‘There is an extensive programme of extracurricular activities that complement the more formal curriculum.

“Pupils know that they can talk to staff if they have a problem and they are confident that staff would sort it out. Your plans identify barriers to pupils’ learning effectively, including the social and emotional needs of some pupils.” Speaking about the headteacher, the report reads: “Since taking up the post of executive headteacher in September 2018, you have introduced a number of changes that are already having a very positive impact. Your evaluation of the school is accurate, and you have well thoughtout plans to develop the school further.” Executive head Louise Jones said: “The whole school, staff, children, governors are thrilled with the report. All involved

with the school have worked incredibly hard and have been committed to constantly improving to ensure that children receive the best education.

“We are especially pleased with so many incredibly positive comments. We are very pleased that the hard work undertaken by all in the school community has been recognised, including

the systems in place, the reflective and driven nature of staff/governors and the commitment of the pupils. “The inspector also recognised our happy, caring ethos. We were over-

whelmed by the support from parents and how Ofsted recognised the great lengths we go to, to ensure safeguarding is effective and children are safe in our care.”

FAITH FOREST OPENS ST MARY’S Catholic Primary School in High Green welcomed parents and community leaders to the official opening of their new spiritual garden named St Mary’s Faith Forest.

Although the original plan of a garden party with picnics, lawn games and ice creams was washed out by a deluge of rain, they still managed to have a lovely afternoon. The celebration began with a liturgy of blessing incorporating dance, song - in Zulu no less - and prayer. Then representatives from the community including from all the local Christian churches, the parish council, St Mary’s parish and Bishop Ralph braved the weather to

explore the Faith Forest and declare it officially open. Back in the warmth of inside, parents set up picnics in the hall whilst the Friends of St Mary’s provided each child with an ice lolly. The Faith Forest was established to provide a quiet reflective space which made best use of the wonderful school grounds and close proximity of woodland. The children designed and helped make the space as part of their work with forest schools provider Foresteers and the newly established Mini Vinnies group helped to choose the name.

A spokesperson for the event told Look Local: “Once again we had a lovely day with lots of people looking around our seven gardens. “Our thanks go to the garden owners for all their hard work beforehand and on the day. How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These QHHG WR EH ÂżOOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. FIRE SPREADS ACROSS TWO HOUSES IN LOXLEY SOUTH Yorkshire Fire & Rescue attended at an incident on Loxley Road on Friday afternoon. This was a fire within the roof space of two terraced houses – there were no injuries with everyone out of the buildings safely. Upon arrival, breathing apparatus wearers entered the house to ensure nobody was inside and firefighters then began fighting the fire from above. At its height, three fire engines and a turntable ladder were in attendance but this was later reduced to one as firefighters damped down before the fire investigation starts.

New course will help people share their life stories A COURSE to help people write their life stories will be launched in Sheffield by the Workers’ Educational Association (WEA). ‘Write Your Life’ aims to give a lift to the many who promised themselves that one day they would write about the milestones they have passed and

the mountains they have conquered but have never got round to it. Now the WEA is planning an eightweek course in the autumn that will help people write about their lives. It may be they want to write their whole life story or possibly just one

part of it, such as their schooldays or where they worked. Whatever their story, the WEA will give them advice and support in writing it. And the WEA is offering potential students the chance to hear what the course will offer with a special taster session held at Stocksbridge

Library on Tuesday July 16 from 1pm to 3pm.

stories and find out more about the course.

The session is free and will be hosted by Sue Shaw, a highly experienced writing tutor who will take the autumn course. There will be an opportunity to share your life

Sue said: “Anyone who is interested in writing creatively about their own life and is not sure where to begin is welcome to come along and make a start.”

WEATHER SET FAIR FOR KITE-FLYING AT CARNIVAL SHEFFIELD Kite Fliers provide one of the key attractions at the coming weekend’s Stannington Carnival. A gentle breeze, good visibility and warm rather than hot temperatures are forecast, making conditions ideal for stunt kite flying. As well as the kites, the carnival will feature a host of other attractions. Kicking off with a parade through the park from 11.40am, the annual event also presents a children’s fancy dress competition, Stannington Brass Band, choirs from two local schools, dancers from local dance schools and a display of bellydance. Adora Bubble will display her bubble magic in the parade, in the arena and in the carnival ground. Fairground rides, have-a-go archery and a host of carnival stalls will complete the day, and organisers hope the event will raise more than the £5,000 they were able to distribute last year to local good causes Stannington Carnival takes place in Stannington Park from 11.30am till 4.30pm on Saturday July 13.

SATURDAY July 5 saw the annual President’s Day at Stocksbridge Golf Club. It is always one of the major highlights of the year at the club and it was no different this year.

The winners (Eddie Steele received Lee Hydes prize) are pictured with President John Yeates, Captains Alison Sedgwick and Steven Haigh and Professional, Roger Broad.

With mostly kind weather – apart from the odd shower in the morning – nearly 130 golfers played through the day and all enjoyed a course that is in excellent condition.

The previous day, was a big occasion at the Club as well with the annual Bolsterstone male Voice Choir Charity Day.

The club’s current president is John Yeates and he is in the fourth year of his term of office. John is a long standing member of the club and he was as generous as ever with the section prizes for the day. The main winners were Lee Hydes (11) who had the overall best gross (67, net 56) and stableford (45) scores for the Gents section.

Bev Sykes (27) continued her good form winning the Ladies best stableford score. Then Charlie Binns (29) won the best junior score for the day.

John Yeates expressed his gratitude to the greens and clubhouse staff for “making the day a big success for all concerned.”

Or call: 0114 283 1100

He said: “It is days like this that show what a friendly and welcoming club Stocksbridge is, both on the golf course and in the clubhouse.”

This year, the choir was raising money for Weston Park Hospital and through the day 22 four ball teams competed for the prizes on offer. The winning team was a family affair for the O’Sullivans (Hilja, Liam and Liana) along with head greenkeeper Robert Grayson, were the clear overall winners with a very impressive team stableford score of 98 points. The day was organised in excellent fashion long standing choir member, Brian Pigott. Brian was thanked in the evening, by choir chairman Mick Siddall, for all his hard work and careful preparations for the day. At the end of the evening presentations Mick Siddall presented a cheque for £2,000 to Weston Park. A fantastic amount of money raised for a very worthy cause.

PIGS BACK IN TRAINING STOCKSBRIDGE Rugby, under the guidance of head coach Rhys Keenan, began pre-season training last week, with encouraging numbers attending both sessions. Keenan declared himself pleased with the initial turn out and with the holiday season in full swing, more of the squad are due to report back over the next week or so.

Local Sport

The prestigious Bradfield Brewery Cup, the traditional season opener for Stocksbridge, has been confirmed for August 17 at Coal Pit Lane, with the league campaign starting a week later and a mouth-watering clash with Ossett Rugby, before a local derby with Hallamshire Rugby the week after that. There will be a social BBQ event after training on July 19, with music and refreshments. All club members are welcome.

TIGERS UNBEATEN RUN ENDS SHEFFIELD Speedway Tigers’ unbeaten home league record was ended by Redcar who secured a 48-42 win at Owlerton. Tigers were able to register just four race wins compared to Redcar’s 11 on a frustrating evening for the Steel City outfit. The visitors were inspired by their skipper Charles Wright, who was voted Sheffield’s Rider of the Season last year, as he came back to haunt his former club with a stunning 15-point max. From a Sheffield point-ofview, Danny King top scored with 11 - but he’ll be disappointed to win just one of his six outings on home shale.

Captain Kyle Howarth returned to action with a ninepoint score while there were plusses from reserve pairing Josh MacDonald and Zaine Kennedy who was making his first appearance in just over a fortnight after being sidelined through injury. Ty Proctor had a steady night at the office but was unable to get amongst the heat wins while youngster Drew Kemp endured another torrid meeting plagued by mechanical gremlins. The rider replacement facility managed just two points for broken collarbone victim Broc Nicol and boss Simon Stead admits that’s something they need to look at.

“We will know more about the extent of his injuries later this week but we are struggling to cover for him,” Stead said. “We know where the problems are and they were exploited today. “Take nothing away from Redcar though; they are clearly now a top side since they made their changes and good luck to them. “Right now it’s hard to take but we have to bounce back and I know the boys can do that.” Sheffield host Eastbourne at Owlerton next Sunday July 14 at 5.30pm.

Hinchcliffe wins Leeds 10k in club record time

PENISTONE Footpath Runner Scott Hinchcliffe put in an impressive performance to win the Leeds 10k and in the process break his own club 10k record in a time of 31-29. In Andratx on the Mediterranean Island of Majorca, Alison Nockels claimed first over-50 lady on a flat out one-mile road race.

In the same event husband Daren narrowly missed out on third place, edged into fourth place after a photo finish. Dawn Broom claimed second lady at the Loxley Lash 5k which was held at Forge Valley Cycle track. Dawn’s time was 21-55. Father and son team Richard and Hugh Mackie finished fifth out of 33 pairs in the

Bedfall class at the Saunders Lakeland marathon in the Howgills. The gruelling event up in the Lake District was 32 kilometres in length and involved 2,000 metres of climbing. Closer to home, veteran runner Shaun Walker came home in 63rd place at the Great Hucklow Fell race. Andy Walch completed the Borrowdale trail half marathon in 82nd

place in a time of 2-30-43. Nearby, wife Sarah Walch competed in the Scafell Pike trail marathon getting round in a time of 6-47-35 in 108th place. Bryan Harrod came in 17th at the hilly Chesterfield Spire 10 mile road race in 1-13. Andrew Pearson continued his excellent form capturing first in the men’s over-55 category at the Witheresea five mile road

race. His time of 30-41 represented another club record for Andrew. At the South Yorkshire track and field meeting Graihagh Turner was fifth in the 600 metres in a personal best time of 2-02 and 10th in the 80 metres with 13-23 which was also a personal best. A good number of the club’s junior runners took part in the Hoylandswaine Hill races.

Stocksbridge fall agonisingly short against Parkhead Stocksbridge 1st XI 205 all out (Jack Newton 101, Jack Lyons 37) Parkhead 1st XI 209-6 (Andy Hibbert 4-40, Les Harris 2-47) AFTER last week’s emphatic cup victory, Stocksbridge CC first XI were back in league action as they travel to Parkhead for what seemed one of the toughest games of the season. Captain Andy Hibbert lost the toss and Stocksbridge were asked to bat on what seemed like a testing wicket due to early morning rain. The innings got off to very poor start, a mix up between the two openers saw Matt Price ran out and Liam Grayson edged behind to leave Stocksbridge 6-2. This brought Oliver Warren to the crease to join Jack Newton and the pair started to turn the game back towards Stocksbridge. Jack Newton passed his 50 before an excellent partnership of 89 came to and end when Warren fell for a well made 16. Jack Lyons joined Newton and the pair continued to progress the total. Jack Newton then brought up his first 100 of the season with a six straight down the ground. Newton then fell soon after for a magnificent 101. The lower order failed to give Lyons much support as the innings came to a tame end, Lyons made a valu-

able 37 and the innings ended as Stocksbridge were bowled out for 205. Despite being on course for a bigger score, this was still Stocksbridge’s highest total of the season and would require an excellent chase from Parkhead. Stocksbridge soon got on top as Captain Hibbert got two quick wickets and Parkhead were soon 5-2. Joe Hibbert bowled well but was very unlucky to be wicketless. Andy Hibbert quickly took two more wickets to take his tally to four, one of which thanks to a great catch from Newton, and Parkhead were now struggling at 40-4. This brought to the crease the Parkhead captain Adam Burkinshaw.

Local Sport

Burkinshaw batted superbly with the help of the middle order to change the game round. Les Harris took two wickets however the Parkhead batters continued to score and Stocksbridge struggled to remove Burkinshaw. The game went down till the final over until Burkinshaw hit Hibbert for six down the ground as Parkhead won the game with five balls to spare as Burkinshaw ended 95 not out, a real captains knock. All in all a great game of cricket with over 400 runs behind scored, unfortunately though Stocksbridge just fell short on the day.

Baslow 1st XI 192-9 (Jack Murfin 3-28, Paul Hargreaves 3-57) Stocksbridge 2nd XI 139 all out (Jack Murfin 33, Matt Hague 31)

Next weeks sees both sides looking to get back to winning ways, the 1st XI welcome Civil Service. The 2nd XI make the journey to Sheffield Super Kings.

Hawks bloody but unbowed however a freak bounce or two, another two injuries and a total lack of luck saw Stanley score a hatful of tries. With this, you’d expect the team to buckle but, in the last 15 minutes the team held firm and scored again, Spencer Poppleton hammering over from five metres out after another immense team effort and charge up the field. Defensively Hawks shut out the free scoring Stanley team and finished on the front foot.

Sheffield Hawks 12-60 Stanley Rangers DON’T be fooled by the scoreline. Sheffield Hawks totally deserved more from this game and the luck of the Rugby League gods simply wasn’t with them. Injuries meant that Hawks finished this game with 11 on the pitch, only nine of whom could be classed as fit. That the team still took the game to Stanley and scored the last try of the game is to their great credit.

Callan Drewery and Max Blackburn tackled hard in the middle, Owen Riches, despite having one effective shoulder, stopped Stanley players time after time. Joe Littlewood and Joseph Tipping started to play with freedom and came close to breaking through in the last 10 minutes.

Max Hollingdale and Sam North worked tirelessly throughout and David Sedgewick was his usual inspirational and hard-working self throughout the game. Robert Harden, Littlewood and Poppleton helped stop at least five certain scores with the able help of Stanley were organised and effective throughout and took full advantage of mistakes Bailey Thompson who showed immense strength and and loss of players. They raced in to a 20-0 lead after Hawks made errors in their own speed in breaking free again and again to put Stanley half, failing to complete sets and unluckily losing possession. Adam Wilson crossed on the defensive. in the corner after superb work from the entire team to set up the four points. Saul So, after much bad luck, a loss but what positives to Hinchliffe crossed shortly after but both conversions were missed, both being wide out take forward. Speedy recovery for Hinchliffe, Riches right. The half ended with Hawks in touch and hoping to build upon their possession and Wilson and a win next week!
