EIGHT-YEAR-OLD HAILED AS FUNDRAISING HERO A CHILDREN’S charity has praised an eightyear-old from Bolsterstone after she raised over £500 and pledged to continue her hard work. Mayzie Tatchell, a pupil at Deepcar St John’s School, has been awarded the bronze silver and gold badges by Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice and labelled a “fundraising hero”. But Mayzie has found out there’s also a platinum badge on offer and is already working on ideas to reach the top level. She raised £503.12 through a raffle and coffee morning held at her school and canvassed retailers in Penistone to generate prizes. With teacher supervision, she sold tickets at the school gates, at her grandma’s

Mayzie Tatchell, eight, and Bluebell Wood activity co-ordinator Cathy.

birthday party and through her mum’s Facebook account. Mayzie’s parents, Laura Todd and Jonny Tatchell, are understandably very proud of their daughter. Laura told Look Local: “Mayzie said she wanted to raise some money for toys for the charity but when I explained how the hospice worked, she decided to donate the money towards the running of the centre. “She spoke to the retailers in Penistone herself and they were great – she got fantastic support. The school were helpful too.” Mayzie commented: “My favourite part was drawing the raffle. We got lots of prizes from Penistone and I’d like to thank them, as well as the people that bought tickets. I wanted to raise

money for children and I want to do something even bigger next time. I got a big hug off one of the mum’s and a thank you letter from Bluebell Wood. Gail Parkin, community fundraiser for Bluebell Wood said: “We’d love to thank Mayzie for coming down to Bluebell Wood with the money that she raised – it was a fantastic amount. We’re so proud of you here at Bluebell Wood. The amazing donation willreally help to continue to provide fantastic care and support for our children and their families.” Anyone who wants to help Mayzie reach her platinum fundraising status can contact her nan, Sharon, at sharonmarshall285@hotmail. co.uk

Malin Bridge man to walk 160 miles from Sheffield to London to help cure blood cancer

A SENIOR biomedical scientist from Malin Bridge in Sheffield, will be walking the 160-mile distance to London next month, in just four days, to raise money for blood cancer charity Anthony Nolan.

September is Blood Cancer Awareness Month and Mike Smith will be joining forces with people across the country, to take on Anthony Nolan’s Walking Together challenge, to raise vital funds to help save the lives of people with blood cancer. On Saturday September 14, Mike will set off on a four-day walk, from his hometown of Sheffield to the Anthony Nolan head office in London, walking between 35 and 40 miles a day. Mike said: “My dad died from a rare form of cancer in 2007 and, after he died, I learnt more about the work that Anthony Nolan does, and became determined to do something good in his memory. It’s expensive to get people on the register, which is why I now want to raise £1,000.” Mike also has another reason for his close connection to Anthony Nolan. In 2010 he joined the Anthony Nolan stem cell register and five years later received a phone call to say that he had been found as a match for someone in desperate need of a stem cell transplant. Mike said: “All I knew was that she was a nine-year-old girl with blood cancer, and that I could help. “I actually donated at The Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield where I was currently working. It was like donating blood and was a lot easier than I expected. Afterwards I felt normal, no side effects. It’s incredible that one day of your time could give somebody an entire lifetime. “Anthony Nolan do incredible work, giving people a second chance at life. My dad never got that second chance, so I felt obligated to give everyone else the second chance he could never have.”

Mike will be walking the 160-mile distance with his good friend Scott. The pair will walk up to 42 miles a day, with just a backpack containing their belongings. Mike said: “I decided to do such a long walk as I wanted it to be quite a challenge. “For training I’ve just been staying active, I don’t want to practice by doing a big walk, as I think that might put me off doing the whole thing!” Anthony Nolan is the charity that finds matching donors for people with blood cancer who need a stem cell transplant – and gives them a second chance of life. They also carry out ground-breaking research to save more lives and provide information and support to patients after a stem cell transplant, through its clinical nurse specialists and psychologists, who help guide patients through their recovery. Anna Scalera, Head of Community and Events at Anthony Nolan, said: “We are delighted that Mike is taking part in Walking Together this month, saving lives with every step he takes. For anyone wanting to get involved, organising your own walk couldn’t be easier and the funds raised will enable us to recruit potential stem cell donors to the Anthony Nolan register – any one of whom could give a second chance of life to someone with blood cancer.” Top fundraisers will appear on a leader board on the Walking Together web page and those who raise over £200 before the start of September will be entered into a free prize draw, where they will be in with a chance of winning a goody bag. You can sponsor Mike at https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/sheffield2london and follow his journey on social media using #stepsforstemcells Find out more about Walking Together for Anthony Nolan by visiting https://www.anthonynolan.org/walking-together

THE Inman Pavilion in Stocksbridge is about to open a laboratory full of amazing technology for the public to use. ‘Science X’ is the latest initiative at this ever-evolving local community centre, with the Grand Opening of the facility on Sunday September 15 from 3pm. Choose to visit and you will find a 3D printer, laser cutter,

microcomputers and a host of other modern technological gadgets. “For a few years the Inman Pavilion has been running a successful science club for young people.” says James O’Neill. “We noticed the adults had just as much, if not more, fun than the kids. So we decided to create a dedicated laboratory for adults and

older children where we could meet up and learn to use some amazing machines.” A room has now been refurbished and kitted out with the equipment funded through grants from Sheffield City Council’s Ward Pots and Community Fund, Virgin’s Heart of the Community and The Institute of Physics.

Agent of Chaos Dear Editor In a recent edition (No. 1501 p24) of Private Eye magazine, reader Sarah Bates drew attention to a dystopian sci-fi book written by Norman Spinrad concerning tyranny and rebellion entitled ‘Agents of Chaos’ that was first submitted for publication in 1967, which she had found in a second-hand shop, the main protagonist of which is named Boris Johnson! Intrigued by such information, I consequently managed to acquire a second hand copy via Amazon; the dust jacket summary of which informs: “Humanity has colonised the nearest planets of the solar system. One government unifies the billions of citizens scattered across three different worlds: the Hegemony, supervising a new age of peace and prosperity. Conflict between nations no longer exists. But a price has been paid. The Hegemony tolerates no opposition. It imposes its rule by force. Social progress is impossible, and personal freedoms have been eliminated.

This was a huge success with around 60 people attending - thank you to them also for being so High Green in Bloom would like to thank all generous. The profits of ÂŁ700 will be added to other who contributed and attended our annual gala in funds raised throughout the year and presented Mortomley Park last Saturday.

Someone is going to get killed

Despite some unfavourable weather at times, we were happy that the event went so well. We send our gratitude to our sponsors Lane End and Mortomley T.A.R.A., Ecclesfield Parish Council, J.G. Graves Trust and The Sheffield Town Trust who enabled us to provide the free children’s rides.

If traffic calming and pelican or zebra crossings are not put on Worley Road/ Mortomley Lane someone is going to be killed.

A particular thank you to St. Saviour’s Church for extending their hospitality and to the Stone Lilies band for a terrific performance. This annual event has become a village staple, gaining popularity each year and we hope to repeat this similar time, same place, next year... watch this space!

A petition was presented to Sheffield City Council with over 10% of the population signing it. Completely ignored!

Thank you all, David Cooper, chairman H.G.I.B.

Joe Hibbert 5-36 Sheffield University Staff 1st XI 88 all out (Joe Hibbert 5-36, Jake Vickers 2-9, Les Harris 2-10) Stocksbridge 1st XI 91-1 (Jack Newton 60*, Ant Siddall 21*) IN Stocksbridge Cricket Club’s first XI’s penultimate game of the season, Stocksbridge travelled to Sheffield University Staff. After a rain delayed start at a wet and windy Warminster Road, Captain Andy Hibbert won the toss and elected bowl first. In truth the Uni Staff innings never got going. The fatherson opening partnership of Andy and Joe Hibbert both picked up a wicket each to put Stocksbridge in the ascendancy. Once both Uni Staff openers fell with the score on 27, the runs seemed of dry up. Jake Vickers replaced Joe Hibbert and Vickers and Andy Hibbert ap-

plied real pressure and runs seemed hard to come by. Les Harris then replaced Hibbert and there was no let up for the batsmen. Vickers and Harris both picked up two wickets each and the pair went for just 20 runs in 20 overs. This now left the Uni Staff innings meandering to a very slow conclusion. Joe Hibbert returned to the attack to great effect as he took the final four wickets of the innings to take his third five-wicket haul for the season. Uni Staff were bowled out for a well below par 88 runs from 44.4 overs. This now meant that Stocksbridge would require just 89 runs from 46 overs to complete a 25 point victory. As usual, Matt Price and Jack Newton opened the batting for Stocksbridge. The pair put on an opening stand of 43 to set Stocksbridge well

on there way to victory before Price fell for seven. Newton was destructive as ever, and looked in no mood to surpass the total in any period of time. Newton struck 10 fours and a six on his way to an excellent unbeaten 60 from 46 balls. Newton was well supported from number three Ant Siddall who struck a classy 21 not out as Stocksbridge cruised to a 9 wicket victory with just under 30 overs remaining. Stocksbridge 2nd XI 79 all out (Bob Newton 32, Matt Hague 23) Sheffield University Staff 81-2 (Rowan Brearley 2-14) Next week sees the conclusion of both senior sides’ league campaigns. The first XI are at home to Hathersage first XI and the second XI make the trip to Derbyshire for the reverse fixture against Hathersage second XI.

War Memorial in entertaining draw with Norton Oughtibridge 2-2 Norton Sportsman OUGHTIBRIDGE WMFC kicked off proceedings in the Blades Super Draw with the Leagues only game when they entertained Norton Sportsman. A large crowd was down at the war memorial and they was not to be disappointed, the game started at a high tempo and this was to be the case for the full 90 minutes - a very even contest from the kick off as two excellent teams went toe to toe. It was David Hudson’s men who went in front though after 15 minutes when Charlie Tunnard scored out of nothing when he caught the visiting keeper unaware from 25 yards. Adam Thomas then crashed a free kick against the cross bar before Brad Bowland equalised five minutes before half time. The second half again was end to end and but it was Oughtibridge who again went in front when Wilson Coupe picked out Stocksbridge Park Steels midfielder Kurt Turner who produced a very cool finish. The visitors finished the game strongly and found Keiran Osbourne in the Oughtibridge goal in fine form and he saved well twice to keep the home side lead. But Norton did find an equaliser when Archer’s shot was well saved again by Osbourne but he was powerless to stop the rebound which fell kindly for the striker. Chas Tunnard almost won it at the end but his shot was straight at the Sportsman keeper.

Report: Owen Harrison Photos: Chris Clancy A LATE penalty converted by Luke Mangham was enough to see Stocksbridge Park Steels beat Lincoln United. As the first half began to reach its conclusion, Stocksbridge continued to search for the goal that would give them the advantage at the break. They nearly found this goal four minutes before half time after brilliant work by Scott Ruthven again, creating a sniff of a chance for Lewis Whitham on the left wing.

The young Steels number seven, managed to run down the flank and beat his defender not once, but twice, to turn in and shoot for the top right corner, but his shot flew well astray of the target and Lincoln United stopper Michael Emery had to take a long walk to collect the ball from behind the goal. Lincoln keeper Michael Emery was shortly after sent off for deliberate handball and subkeeper Battersby’s first task was picking the ball up out of his own net. Luke Mangham took the resulting free kick on the edge of the box with a long run up and managed to hammer the ball over the six man Lincoln United wall and nestle his free kick into the bottom left corner. As the blustery conditions continued at Bracken Moor, the second half got underway after the half time team talk, one in which Stocksbridge would come out the tunnel brimming with confidence after lapping up the praise of the coaching staff after their first half showing. However, this was not evident in the early stages of the second period as sloppy defending from the hosts’ cost them a goal. A mix up and miscommunication between the Stocksbridge defenders resulted in Seidi Alberto, the Lincoln United number eight, to be put through one on one with Steels’ young stopper Jacob Carney. Alberto slotted the chance away to make it 1-1. As the hour mark approached, play became sloppy from both teams and lacked real quality, precision, edge and accuracy that the first half was brimming with from the hosts. Albeit constant pressure from Lincoln United towards the latter stages of the encounter at Bracken moor, it was Stocksbridge who edged the game three minutes from time courtesy of a Luke Mangham penalty. Steels are at home to Spalding United on September 7, with a 3pm kick off.
