MP for Stocksbridge and Penistone, Angela Smith, became the third MP to join the Liberal Democrats this week. In February, Smith quit the Labour party to form the Independent Group with six other MPs.

In a statement, Angela said: “Over the past few years I have been on a political journey triggered by an increasing sense of disenchantment with the Labour Party. It appeared to me that Labour, a party which I had effectively been born into and supported all my life, was increasingly distancing itself from the national interest by putting its own priorities first. This process intensified after the election of Jeremy Corbyn as leader.

“What we have now is a Labour Party dominated by extremists, promoting Marxist policies and supporting an oppressive, unpleasant culture which attempts to bully members unhappy with this state of affairs out of the party. “I left Labour because it has become an intolerant, narrow sect, driven by ideology and utterly contemptuous of those who look to compromise and consensus as the basis of good politics. It became clear to me Labour no longer shared my progressive values. ”At the same time, we are witnessing a similar process in the Conservative Party, where extremists are driving the party to the right. The Conservative Party is now truly the English Nationalist Party, indulging in a fantasy vision of Brexit

and purging the very best of its Parliamentarians. “Our country deserves better than this. At a time of national crisis, people deserve a better choice than the two old parties. “I am therefore delighted to be joining Jo Swinson and the Liberal Democrats. We need a more inclusive, tolerant politics for our country that values diversity. The Liberal Democrats are the strongest party to stop Brexit and build a society that gives opportunities to everyone, tackles the climate crisis and invests in our public services. “I am relishing continuing my work with the Liberal Democrats to not only fight against Brexit but to also campaign for the constitutional reform needed to mend our broken politics.”

Squadron Leader Andy Williams.

The Lord-Lieutenant said: “The cadet movement has a transformative impact on the lives of young people and I am delighted to be able to recognise three truly inspirational cadets who have grasped all the opportunities that being a cadet has given them and emerged as fantastic role models. I am looking forward to them joining me on many of my duties in the year ahead.”

The Lord-Lieutenant said: “Jamie is an outstanding cadet who is dedicated and committed to doing a great job in the Air Cadets.

Jamie joined his squadron four years ago and has not only achieved a range of qualifications including shooting, first-aid and leadership, he has also taken part in many fund-raising initiatives to support community causes. “Not only does he commit to the squadron very heavily and fundraises for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance and many other charities as an Air Cadet, Jamie also fundraises himself in various ways, He is an inspiration for other cadets.” Jamie said: “I am very proud to have been chosen as a Lord-Lieutenant Cadet and am hugely grateful to the squadron staff for all the opportunities that have led to this. Birch bashing season SHORTER days can only mean one thing on Wharncliffe Heathland Nature Reserve – the birch bashing season is here again. Birch bashing is a crucial part of the management of the heathland. Young birch trees are cut back on a part of the reserve every autumn to prevent a dense woodland developing and shading out the heather that dominates the heathland habitat.

WHILE on patrol on Saturday afternoon, officers from the Deepcar Neighbourhood Team came across a male acting suspiciously. He was searched and found to have a quantity of drugs on him.

Heathland supports many rare species, including the nocturnal nightjar. The total heathland area in UK has declined significantly in the last half century.

LEISURE CENTRE CLOSED DUE TO TRAVELLERS

TRAVELLERS have once again appeared on the car park of Thorncliffe Leisure Centre, forcing it to close its doors. They arrived at 8pm on Sunday evening – the third time this summer that they have parked up there. Councillor Mike Levery told Look Local: “This is the third visit this group travellers have made to Thorncliffe Leisure Centre car park. After the second visit, I got an

agreement with the director of environmental services at Sheffield City Council to look at physical restrictions to prevent access on to the car park in future but this will take some weeks and will involve height restricted barriers to the car park, rear access and access to Paces campus. “At the moment, we are looking for an early eviction notice for travellers that arrived again at the site. Obviously we are very concerned about

RESIDENTS VOICE CONCERNS OVER PLANS FOR UP TO NINE HOUSES PLANS for a development of nine houses in Stocksbridge have been met with concern by residents in the surrounding area. The applicant has applied for planning permission for infill of the site on Bocking Hill to deliver up to nine dwellings. The dwellings are to be accessed from Broomfield Road, served by a single private road. As regards the scale of the development, the applicant has said in supporting documents that it considers dwellings of up to three storeys providing up to four bedrooms to be entirely appropriate for the locality.

However, the plans have been met with some objections. In the planning statement, it says that, “the setting of the listed building is already completely eroded”. A resident of Bloomfield Road commented: “That is a subjective statement. Although there is some evidence of infill on the site, the barn and cruck are of significant historic importance and in good order. The Barn is not a “dwelling house” as stated in the Planning Statement. “The barn and cruck are classified as agricultural and were Grade 2 listed in 1977. The Barn dates from the 17th century. DEFRA grantaided restoration funding in 2005, having deemed the structure of historic importance.”

The cruck barn is not a dwelling and is a Grade 2 listed building which was restored using DEFRA funding.

Other objections include the use of greenbelt land, disturbance of the land during development and access. An objection reads: “Broomfield Road, towards Watson House Green, is already at dangerous levels of parking causing difficulty for other vehicles to pass safely, and to pedestrians. Broomfield Road is already used as overspill parking for Broomfield Court and Horsley Croft as there is insufficient parking for residents living there. “The width of the narrow road varies and at certain points vehicles cannot pass parked cars unless they are mounted on the pavement. This causes a danger to pedestrians. This road is never gritted, and the risk of

injury to pedestrians, and damage to parked vehicles, is heightened in the winter. “Bracken Moor Football Club have events and matches and parked cars stretches the full length of Broomfield Road, where the proposed access is requested, and prevents a safe flow of traffic. “Creating an access here will make it virtually impossible to safely exit the proposed site. Further parking will inevitably result in cars encroaching on Watson House Green and causing erosion. This is a totally unsafe and dangerous proposal which is going to tempt people to enter the site illegally, and dangerously, (the wrong way up the lane) rather than drive the legal way round, putting

other road users safety in jeopardy. Having lived here for 38 years we have witnessed this many times. This one time quiet lane is losing its character through over development and vehicle saturation. “Insufficient parking is shown on the plan for the new properties, and we fear cars from the development will park on the road, which may lead to conflict within the community. “An access exists alongside Ingfield House where it would be safer to enter from and exit onto Bocking Hill.” The consultation expiry date is September 19 2019.

It’s not too late to make a Will... Hello, I’m Jane Bowland, your local Estate Planning Consultant of 13 years experience. I am an expert in helping people arrange their Wills, Trusts, Lasting Powers of Attorney and Pre-paid Funeral Plans. Along with my colleague Haworth Ward-Drummond we specialise in helping all kinds of people gain peace of mind by providing professional advice, but with a personal touch. We offer a FREE consultation without obligation for anybody who would like to know more about any of the following:

• Making a basic Will • Setting up Lasting Powers of Attorney • Protecting your home for future generations • Pre-paid Funeral Plans We know that planning for the future is a very personal matter. Not everyone is able or wants to travel to an appointment in town to sort out their affairs. We can visit you at a convenient time in the privacy and comfort of your own home to discuss your unique circumstances.

A visit and consultation is completely free and you are under no obligation to do anything. If you decide to make any arrangements you can be safe in the knowledge that all our professional services and work are fully insured and we are members of the Society of Will Writers, so all our clients are assured of the

highest standards of conduct at all times. All our clients (and their families) that we have helped in the past have been very happy with our services and tell us they have gained great peace of mind knowing that they have sorted everything out.

Jane came to see my parents to help them protect the family home. She really made us all feel at ease, especially my parents. We had no idea what we could do to protect Mum and Dad. Having set up trusts and Lasting Power of Attorney’s, Mum and Dad can get on with their lives without worrying, knowing everything is now in place. Thank you Jane! Mrs Boyle and family, Ecclesfield

Democracy

It’s clear to anyone visiting Sheffield city centre How Angela Smith has the nerve to send a letter our city of sanctuary has a real and tragic ‘street to print regarding “Democracy I will never know. This is an MP like many other Labour and homeless’ problem that is getting worse. Conservative MPs who have failed to respect the I urge you to Google ‘Tent city Sheffield’ and after wishes of their constituents in delivering Brexit. due research support them in any way you can. Miss Smith was re-elected in 2017 on a Labour Street homelessness has many causes; abuse, manifesto stating they would respect the result of addiction and mental health issues being some of the 2016 referendum. the well known causes (but not all). But like most other things in their manifesto the Within our parish of Ecclesfield we have three Labour leadership has made a U-turn. In 2016 we empty buildings suitable to be converted into were not asked if we wanted to leave the EU with homeless hostels. All three exist in Grenoside or without a deal. Maybe it is time for the second and would be ideal. One is large enough to referendum the remoaners want? But the question accommodate up to 20 street homeless and have an should be, “Do you want to leave the EU with or addiction rehabilitation clinic in-house, possibly without a deal? not what they are hoping for, “Do doubling up as a probation hub. you still want to leave the EU? that question was answered in 2016. Miss Smith, do the right thing I have begun putting together a proposal to our and resign your position. You no longer share the Ecclesfield Parish Council to consider purchasing views of over 60% of your constituents. one of these properties to use as a hostel for some of our Sheffield street homeless. Kevin Waters

Whilst Angela Smith MP became very unpopular with her constituents within her ward of Stocksbridge/Penistone, I recognise that she did indeed do some great work beforehand.

However, I must strongly disagree with her recent statement in the Look Local dated 05/09/2019. Angela Smith disregarded her constituents will in regard to the Brexit vote, the excuse of, “I do what Cllr Andy Bainbridge, I deem in the best interests of the country does Labour Councillor for East Ecclesfield not provide any excuse for a blatant disregard of the 60.65 % leave, 39.35 % remain outcome of the upper Don wards vote.

With respect, may I remind Angela Smith that our constituency voted to leave the EU. She in turn disregarded our wishes and voted to remain. She has now decided to join the Lib Dems (jolly hockey sticks party), her fourth choice in a year. Our country voted by a majority to leave. That is democracy Angela, but you like many other MPs decided to ignore the peoples’ wishes and take control of parliament and stop the no deal which was our bargaining tool on the EU talks. We are therefore now at the EU mercy in future negotiations.

The people put MPs where they are, to be the people’s voice, not to be ignored and the MP’s personal view overrule the peoples. Operation Yellowhammer was mentioned by Angela Smith as a point of reason for not wishing to leave the EU without a deal, I would like to remind her that Yellowhammer was drawn up as a “worst case scenario in the event of leaving the EU without a deal, this is a very responsible act by the government to ensure all facets are looked at and covered in some way in readiness and preparations.

To suggest that the Prime Minister has debased Does she not realise that Germany already has democracy is quite frankly ludicrous and indeed economic problems with failing car industry and without base. many of the other EU members in disarray. You have voted to take away the biggest and best bargaining chip the Prime Minister has to ensure a fair and beneficial deal with the EU. May I remind you of democracy when I ask you to reflect on your obligations to your own constituents.

Our MP Angela Smith has now announced she is to be a Liberal Democrat MP, her fourth political personification in as many months beaten only by that political stalwart Chuka Umuna MP who did it faster. Now I could say that she has no principles as far as politics are concerned or I could be charitable and say she has no idea where her beliefs or ideals stand, but I won’t. I will leave that for the electorate to decide at the next election. She may not even stand in this constituency, she may do a Rudd and stand in a safer seat rather than the one she currently represents.

Whilst Angela Smith MP became very unpopular with her constituents within her ward of Stocksbridge/Penistone, I recognise that she did indeed do some great work beforehand.

WATERWHEELS AND HEAVY HAMMERS WORTLEY TOP FORGE FREE OF CHARGE FOR HERITAGE OPEN DAY

WORTLEY Top Forge will be open free of charge on Saturday September 14, from 11am to 3pm, as part of the national programme of Heritage Open Days. Visitors can join volunteers on a guided tour. Come and imagine the heat, the noise, the hard physical work, the dangers. Just think what it was like to live there! It is Britain’s last surviving water powered heavy iron forge. For centuries its waterwheels worked huge hammers which forged hot iron into shape. The wheels have been restored, and visitors will see them turning. The historic hammers are still there. This is one of the plac-

es where modern engineering began. Wortley Top Forge is by the River Don, on a side road to the west of the A629 Sheffield - Huddersfield road. The postcode is S35 7DN. Turn off the A629 just south of Wortley village, or at the traffic lights in Thurgoland. There is free car parking for visitors in the grounds. Wortley Top Forge is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and a Grade 1 Listed Building. The guide will explain how it made railway wagon axles in the 19th century – and how important their quality was. You will hear about the lives of the people who lived and

worked there. Visitors can see our collection of historic engines and machines, some of which will be working. The Forge is owned by the South Yorkshire Industrial History Society, which bought it in 1953 when it was derelict. It is managed by the South Yorkshire Trades Historical Trust. Both bodies are charities. It has been restored with very limited funds, and it is run entirely by volunteers. The Forge is open on Sundays and Bank Holidays from Easter to early November, between 11am and 4pm. Group visits, booked in advance, are welcome at any time.

Football talk in Bradfield Breaking news DURING the 19th century, Sheffield led the world of Association Football and was a critical factor in the formulation of today’s worldwide rules and regulations.

for Tin Man

Martin Westby was approached by Sheffield Libraries in 2017 to design and write the content for a free to download app that offers a walking guide to the heritage of Sheffield football, called ‘Sheffield Home of Football’. Since launch the app has been downloaded over 2,000 times by people from all round the world. Martin has written a book ‘A History of Sheffield Football, 1857 to 1884’, which is for anyone with an interest in how Association football first started and then evolved. It covers the rich history of the 95 Sheffield clubs that existed between 1857 and 1889, with special emphasis on today’s four surviving clubs. It also looks in depth at the history of the Sheffield & Hallamshire County F.A. - England’s first County Association. Local amateur genealogists are finding the book a fascinating resource for investigating whether their ancestors were present when Sheffield led the world of Association football. Martin also has a new book out this summer called England’s Oldest Football Clubs 1815-1889’: A new chronological classification of early football (Folk, School, Military, County, Rugby, & Association. Sheffield born Martin will be speaking and answering questions for the Bradfield Historical Society on Monday October 7 at 7.30pm. This talk will take place at Low Bradfield Village Hall and all visitors are welcome. After the event Martin will be selling his book and will be happy to sign and dedicate his book if there is interest. For more information contact Malcolm Nunn on 0114 2337463.

POOR Tin Man! Ryden Ockerby, who is cast as the role for Steel Valley Beacon’s current production of ‘The Wizard of Oz’, has broken his ankle. The injury occurred while taking part in his chosen sport of wrestlingand so he has had to step down (or hop down) from the part. In the story, the Tin Man doesn’t have a heart – but Ryden does and he is heart-broken that he cannot continue in his first role with the Beacon.

He is wished a speedy recovery and it is hoped that he will soon, literally, be back on his feet. Rebecca Aitken, who was double-cast as Scarecrow will don the tin costume and Olivia Froggatt will continue as Scarecrow in the final three performances this weekend. Tickets for the remaining shows, including a matinee on Saturday, are available from Stocksbridge Keys or by calling 0114 2884391.

ON Sunday September 29, Stocksbridge Park Steels FC are hosting a game in recognition of Allen Bethel, for his contribution not only to Stocksbridge Park Steels FC, but to the wider community of Stocksbridge. Over 35 years ago, Allen started a junior section with four junior players, from which emerged one of the best non-league clubs in England, with over 350 juniors and five senior squads representing the community, with a first team playing in the prestigious Northern Premier League. To mark this special occasion, former Stocksbridge players from over the decades will be playing against a Sheffield United legends side, in a charity match, with funds raised going to charity of Allen’s choice. A Blades legends squad - including Chris Wilder - will make the short trip to play a Stocksbridge Park Steels Vets team in a game to mark Allen’s outstanding contribution. At the end of last season Allen retired from all duties at Steels. Bethel’s legacy is quite extraordinary, and he goes down as a pioneer of non-league football in our area, turning Steels, a club he formed back in 1986 following a merger with Oxley Park, into one of the

most progressive and well-run non-league clubs in South Yorkshire. Bethel oversaw the development of the superb training pitches, situated to the side of Steels’ excellent Look Local Stadium, renowned as one of the best playing surfaces in the area. A number of Steels players have also moved into professional football, the most famous being England International Jamie Vardy. The Blades squad could include the likes of Paddy Kenny, Ian Bennett, Chris Morgan, Leigh Bromby, Derek Geary, David Holdsworth, Richard Cresswell, Darius Henderson, Ian Bryson, Glyn Hodges, Andy Campbell, Rob Kozluk, Michael Brown, Carl Bradshaw, Carl Asaba, Rob Hulse, Michael Tonge and Danny Webber. Appearances of these former Blades stars will of course depend on their availability on the day. The game takes place on Sunday September 29, with a kick-off time of 2pm. It will be played at Look Local Stadium on Bracken Moor Lane. Admission is £7 for adults and £3 for concessions and children (pay on the day). Car parking will be £2 and subject to weather conditions.

Stocksbridge Golf Club round-up IT has been a busy week of golf as the summer season moves into its last full month at Stocksbridge Golf Club.

Les Wright now leads the league with 64 points, Dave Broadhurst is in second with 59 points and Sandy Murphy is in third with 46 points.

The Dragons Summer Cup is coming to the climax of the competition and league leader, Les Wright (14), won the round on September 4 with 38 points.

The club’s mid-week medal was played on September 5 with a small field taking part because of the windy weather. Nigel Eggenton (8) won with a net 64. Ben Stringer (6) was second with a net 67 and Phillip Jepson (12) was third with a net 68.

P. Dickinson (18) was second with 35 points and T. Newton (14) was third also with 35 points but a slightly lower back nine.

Friday September 6 saw the Dragons past captains play with Steve Mortimer (13) winning with 33 points. Les

Wright (14) was second with 32 points and Alf Pearson (23) third with 31 points. Saturday September 7 saw the gents section play for a pro’s special prize. Close to 60 members played in good conditions, albeit cool when the sun went in. Dave Buxton (9) was the overall winner with a commendable 42 points in the stableford format. Dave King (22) was second with 41 points, beating Peter Finney (5) on the same score with a better back nine.

Brownhill stroked past Carney.

A LACKLUSTRE performance from the Steels saw them drop two places to seventh following a 3-1 home defeat to Spalding.

The Second half saw two penalties. Firstly Ludlam fouled Zeuerner in the area and Brownhill blasted the penalty straight down the middle.

Steels went behind following a mix up in the defence and

his foot on to his arm. Mangham stepped and slotted the ball away for his eighth goal in five games. Steels huffed and puffed but couldn’t find an equaliser. Duggan in the Spalding goal was superb and controlled the game from start to fin-

ish, slowing the tempo down whenever he could. Steels finally went 3-1 down when Brownhill got his third of the game when he was left alone in the penalty box and he smashed the ball home. Steels face Stamford at home on Saturday with a 3pm kick off.

GRASS ROOTS FOOTBALL ROUND-UP PENISTONE Church found some form as they beat Albion Sports 3-1 in the Toolstation NCEL Premier Division on Saturday. Jordan Coduri put Church on the front foot from the off, slotting home after just eight minutes. Nathan Keightley doubled the lead just before the half hour mark and although Labi Aideniran pulled a goal back with two minutes of the game remaining, Elliott Firth put the game to bed for Church with a goal from the restart.

injury crisis, they could only field a bare 11, with seven regulars missing.

Oughtibridge couldn’t find the equaliser.

It was always going to be tough, despite going one down early in the game the visitors soon equalised with a Tom Gallaway header from a corner.

OUGHTIBRIDGE War Memorial Ladies have made a great start to the season. They followed up their FA Cup Preliminary Round win over Sheffield Wednesday Ladies last week with a long trip to face Northampton Town Ladies in their opening league fixture and managed to edge a very tight game.

Against the run of play, Oughtibridge went behind again before a spell just before halftime when Olly Black missed a penalty and Matt Harrison hit the post. But the War Memorial did go in at the break level when Adam Thomas volleyed well from Wilson Coups’ good work.

The Nick Firth Tiles Man of the Match award went to Cameron Simpson, sponsored by S & N Printers.

In the second half, the match seemed to be only heading in one direction as the visitors went on the attack only to be caught out twice in five minutes to go 4-2 down. Callum Chambers did pull one back with ten minutes to play but

OUGHTIBRIDGE suffered their first defeat of the season when, due to an Luke Mangham has scored eight in five games.

Bex Shaw headed home the winner in the 75th minute, bravely getting ahead of an advancing keeper from Millie Kenyon’s perfect delivery. This coming Sunday they host Ollerton Town Ladies at the War Memorial, with a 2pm kick off. Entry is free and the pavilion will be open for refreshment.
