PRIME MINISTER VISITS PRIME Minister Boris Johnson paid a flying visit to Stocksbridge as part of his whistle stop tour of the north on Friday.

Speaking of the reception he received, Johnson said: “It was quite a noisy reaction that wasn’t it? It was a bit 18th century. It was good!”

improve amenities for the community or it could be stuff to get people out shopping. It could be all sorts of things.

The former Mayor of London, who replaced Teresa May as the leader of the government in July, arrived at Fox Valley at around 2pm.

Last week, Stocksbridge was named as one of the 100 towns due to receive a cut of £3.6 billion of the Towns Fund.

There, he met up with Conservative Parliamentary candidate Miriam Cates before walking through the market area, chatting to shoppers and stall holders.

Look Local asked the Prime Minister how that would be spent. He replied: “Somebody said in the audience today that the town fund was cunningly devised to be political. That’s not the intention at all.

“But what it will do is reflect local priorities. And what we’re also doing is giving communities the reassurance that they need for safer streets - 20,000 more police officers on the streets. The thick end of a billion pounds we’re spending – perhaps more to get to the full 20,000.

Although the visit had not been formally announced, the news had leaked out and an expectant crowd awaited his arrival. Mr Johnson was mobbed by people hopeful of snapping a photo with him or getting their point across regarding the drawn-out withdrawal of the UK from the EU. Some members of the crowd chanted negatively, although Johnson certainly also had much vocal support, with a few people repeatedly shouting, “Get us out, Boris!”

“How would Jeremy Corbyn and Labour spend the money? Well, we heard this week. They want to stay in the EU past October 31. A billion pounds a month that will cost. So, I know where my priorities are. “It will be for local people to bid into the funds. Whoever the elected authority is in that town, they will have the ability to do it. We did something like this when I was the Mayor of London. It was incredibly popular – it gave councils the opportunity to give people what they have been calling out for a long time.”

The pub was put on the market for sale in July 2019 after a short period of closure. Bradfield Brewery, having a keen interest in traditional style community public houses, vested their interest and subsequently were successful in the purchase of the property. With contracts now exchanged, the brewery are keen to get the doors open and give a warm welcome to customers old and new. Shortly to become the third Brewery Tap for Bradfield Brewery, the Wharncliffe Arms will feature a selection of cask ales from the Farmers Ales range produced by the brewery, as well as a great selection of fine wines, spirits and soft drinks. The pub was previously renowned for its community feel and friendly atmosphere and this is something the Brewery will be keen to reinstate. Operating a public house venue is not something new for Bradfield Brewery who have enjoyed over a decade of success at their original

Brewery Tap, The Nags Head at Loxley as well as continued success with their more recent acquisition, the King and Miller at Deepcar. Bradfield Brewery is based on a busy working farm in the picturesque village of Bradfield in Sheffield. Since brewing their first cask ale in 2005, the brewery has grown from strength to the strength with their Farmers Ale range now available in outlets nationwide. John Gill, Director at Bradfield Brewery, on the acquisition said “We are excited at the opportunity to serve another local community with a traditional style public

house which will offer great ales in a friendly atmosphere. We strongly believe that traditional pubs should remain a part of our society and we are pleased to have secured this opportunity to bring this offering to the local community of Wharncliffe Side”. The Wharncliffe Arms will be reopening soon, with a date yet to be confirmed. The Brewery will be recruiting for a ‘live in’ manager for the day to day running of the pub. For further details or to express your interest in this upcoming position, please contact Bradfield Brewery on 0114 2851118 or email at lisa@bradfieldbrewery.com

Sheffield drivers reminded to put safety first around roadworks AS the darker nights close in and temperatures begin to fall, Sheffield drivers are being encouraged to take more care when passing through roadworks across the city. The plea comes from Sheffield City Council’s Highways Maintenance contactor, Amey, following a survey into road workers safety, where Sheffield scored just above the national average. However, despite achieving an above average score for overall road worker safety, 62% of Sheffielders have admitted to not being as safety

conscious as they should be when negotiating roadworks - compared to a 59% UK average.

further down the street only to obstruct ongoing work.

The research, which was carried out on behalf of Amey, reveals a majority of UK road users admit to driving in ways that put themselves, workers and other road users at risk of injury or even, death.

Unfortunately, in addition to dangerous driving, Streets Ahead employees have also experienced offensive behaviour, with many having suffered physical and verbal abuse whilst doing their jobs on the streets of Sheffield.

Recently, in Sheffield, where a road closure was in place during resurfacing works, a car attempted to drive through the closure and, despite attempts by on-site workers to inform the driver of the closure, the driver continued, parking up

“We’ve had numerous incidents involving threats of physical violence and actual physical violence to our workforce and our sub-contractors. We’ve also had operatives who have been clipped by cars as they’ve sped past,” added Melissa.

“With the number of vehicles on our roads continuing to rise each year, and with darker nights and wintry conditions on the horizon, we want to remind Sheffield drivers to take extra care when travelling around roadworks and always put safety first.” The findings echo recent research undertaken by Highways England, which revealed a catalogue of serious incidents and near misses across the country, ranging from motorists driving into coned-off areas, to physical and verbal abuse of workers.

As part of the city-wide highways maintenance Streets Ahead contract, roads and pavements across Sheffield are being upgraded and maintained by Amey until 2037, creating a much improved infrastructure for years to come. PLOGGERS RUN THE RUBBISH OUT OF OUGHTIBRIDGE YOU’D be forgiven if you’ve never heard of ‘plogging’ – the act of picking up litter whilst jogging - but it’s all the rage these days in Oughtibridge. Members of Seven Hills Harriers, a women’s running club, have recently held a very productive plogging evening in the village and plan to make it a regular thing.

THE YOUNG MUSICIANS HITTING THE HIGH NOTES

GRACEFUL Harmony are a piano/vocal duet and both students at Ecclesfield Comprehensive school.

Live and went down an absolute storm and they had the chance to meet and play for Tony Hadley.

Pianist Grace Wilkinson, aged 15, and vocalist Hana Edwards, aged 14, are already making waves on the Sheffield music scene and are set to continue in their success.

They are regular musicians at Meadowhall centre and perform the last Wednesday of each month.

Having only been together for only 18 months, they have already played at the Lyceum opening the Children’s Book Awards last year and will be returning to do the same again this year. They are the youngest band to ever play at Wentworth

They have collaborated with The Voice star Lucy Milburn and are currently working with Gogglebox star Umar Siddiqui. A recent festival they played at lead them to be spotted by a well known producer from London so they are currently working to produce new work to send to him.

They have just secured a place to perform at North Nottingham Arena in front of a host of celebrities at a charity ball in November and will be at Castleton for the Christmas lights switch on. They are receiving some amazing feedback and already in demand to perform at various events. They are the founders of the idea ‘Play to Raise’ which encourages buskers to donate a proportion of their tips to charity, a concept they are extremely proud of. These girls are definitely ones to watch!

Appletree Childcare’s 25th birthday APPLETREE Childcare, Grenoside, is celebrating its 25th birthday! To mark the occasion, they are having a party on Friday September 20 at their nursery in the park at 5pm. Manager Janet Parkin said: “Everyone is welcome, please come along for a complimentary drink and have a look around the nursery and see our 25th birthday tree being planted.”

AN AWARD-WINNING DINER ON YOUR DOORSTEP

THE Old Pin Diner in the Palace Mall, Stocksbridge, is your friendly local place to eat, serving freshly cooked meals using locally sourced ingredients.

packed with fun activities for the kids with books, toys, colouring, painting and a dress-up box – which proves to be very popular!

It’s a thriving, award-winning diner with a host of happy regulars who come back time and time again for the comfort of their traditional fare.

The Old Pin serve all-day breakfasts, hot and cold sandwiches and have a function facility where the space can be rented out for any occasion.

But this isn’t just your average café – Tracey Baines and Jennifer Chadburn are always thinking of new ways they can make the most of the facilities and have a lot to offer their customers. And their efforts were rewarded when they won the Sheffield Star Café of the Year 2019.

In the past, they have hosted gigs, a spirit medium night and the usual funeral wakes, weddings and birthday celebrations. They have even transformed the space into a unicorn-themed party! The larger room can comfortably seat around 50 and the smaller one around 30.

They have a separate family room across from the main diner where children can play while you get a bite to eat. It’s

As well as the diner, the Old Pin also offer a meals on wheels service with freshly homemade traditional fa-

vourites for customers that struggle to leave their home. These meals are just £5.95 and come in a microwavable container so that they can be heated up the following day. Another popular option has been their addition to the Just Eat website, where customers can order food for delivery. The times at which this service is offered are being extended. Monday to Friday, you can order between 8.30am and 6pm and on Saturdays, Just Eat can be ordered 8.30am to 1pm. The diner itself is open 8.30am to 3.30pm Monday to Friday and 8.30am to 1pm on Saturdays. Why not call into the diner or order off Just Eat and see what you’ve been missing!

Your Letters Angela Smith I am writing in support of Angela Smith’s decision to join the Liberal Democrats, as a result of the current Labour Party’s hopeless position on Brexit. The issue of whether or not we leave the European Union is the most urgent and serious one this country faces. She is absolutely right to prioritise it and do what she considers best for the country, which includes everyone living in this area. The best “deal we can achieve is not the one negotiated by Theresa May, nor is it “no deal, but it is our current membership of the E.U. Therefore, what is best for our country now is to revoke article 50, which triggered this mess, and remain in the E.U. The benefits of our membership have never been widely understood in Britain, due to the rightwing press misrepresenting it over many decades. We have not been “ruled by Europe, as they have repeatedly claimed. We have been valued partners, in an organization equally as democratic as our own country. The benefits of our membership include the following: * Protection of workers’ rights

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These QHHG WR EH ÂżOOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

arden You don’t need a large space to make an impact - sensory spaces can be any size, ranging from a window box to a large open area. If you are planning or designing a sensory garden for someone with limited mobility then you should also consider ramps or sloped access paths plus raised beds and plants that are accessible for anyone in a wheelchair. Think about the sights, smells, textures, tastes and sounds you love and plant them into your garden... • Sight include flowers, leaves, berries, and grasses in your garden to create interest throughout the year. Sunflowers have bright and bold flowers and are fast growers. You could also plant Hydrangeas, as they produce large colourful blooms which are great to touch • Smell – Honeysuckle will fill the air and lemon scented Geranium has crinkly leaves that smell

of lemon when rubbed. There’s also the popular chocolate Cosmos, which smells like a chocolate-vanilla mixture and herbs such as Lavender, Rosemary, Thyme and Mint. • Touch – a sensory garden can be full of different textures such as Lamb’s Ear which feels woolly and soft to the touch and silver Sage with large, silvery-white leaves covered in cotton wool like down. Ornamental grasses like Mexican Feather are also popular. • Taste – there’s nothing better than picking and eating vegetables and fruit which you have grown yourself. Start with easy growers such as carrots, radishes, lettuces and tomatoes. Herbs and peas are also a safe bet along with edible flowers like Nasturtium and Marigold. • Sound – easily created by planting Bamboo and ornamental grasses that rustle gently in the breeze. A water

feature is great for birds and wildlife, and lets the soothing sounds of running water create a natural soundtrack. For a lot of gardeners, not just those with a sensory garden, October is a tidy-up month, getting plants and containers ready for winter but there are other jobs that need doing as well, as gardening experts will tell you ... Although we had some warmer days over September, the autumn is now definitely here for real, and it feels colder. It’s a beautiful time of year, with the trees changing colour. Sometimes it may seem pointless raking, when the wind blows even more leaves onto the lawn, but just think of all the lovely leafmould you can make! It’s also time to start preparing for early frosts. RHS Get more plants for free by saving seeds from your favourite plants. You can collect seeds

from your garden and the wild, but make sure to label the seeds clearly so you know what they are next spring! It’s important to keep the lawn clear of fallen leaves as they can harbour disease and harm the grass. Rake up the leaves and put them in the compost bin, then apply a fertiliser. It’s important to choose an autumn mixture that boosts roots, rather than a spring one that promotes leafy growth. October is a good month for planting large trees and shrubs it gives their roots time to get established before winter sets in. David Domoney, TV gardener and presenter October’s the time for clearing up. Greenhouses, ponds, gutters and water butts may all need cleaning out, wooden garden furniture will need covering or storing for the winter and terracotta pots will need bringing inside. Plant bulbs for a colourful spring display. Try planting clumps of

five or seven bulbs of the same variety through a border for a really effective display. Eden Project

Stocksbridge bagged the breakthrough goal that they so surely deserved after a marvellous opening 20 minutes from the hosts that saw their courageous display dazzle the visitors. A ball from the left wing found Luke Mangham in the centre of the box who managed to twist and turn away from his marker to poke home the opening goal of the matchup via a minor deflection from a Stamford defender.

That’s now nine goals in six outings for in form front man, which is one of the best goal scoring statistics in the league so far this season. But Steels’ host of wasted chances proved costly as late in the day, Stamford bagged an undeserved equaliser courtesy of substitute Sean Wright. A ball from the right wing from Pearson Mwanyango managed to find Wright in the centre of the box and he managed to nod into the top left corner from four yards out. Stocksbridge Park Steels are away to Newcastle Town on Saturday September 21 with a 3pm kick off.

BIG WINS FOR LOCAL SIDES PENISTONE Church won two games in a week, with a 2-1 win over Goole on Saturday coming after a midweek 5-0 defeat of Grimethorpe Sports. Church hosted Grimethorpe in the Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup and breezed into the next round with goals from Billy Law, Brett Lovell, Nathan Keightley and a brace from Shaun Mundy. On Saturday, Church were at home again in the Toolstation NCEL Premier Division and hosted Goole. Andy Ring opened the scor-

ing on 12 minutes and just a minute later, OUGHTIBRIDGE War Memorial women entertained a bumper crowd with a thumping 7-2 win against an Ollerton team who will be scratching their heads with the margin of defeat. Bex Shaw grabbed two with the rest of the goals shared out by Codi Melia, Millie Kenyon, Annie Longmore, Sam Woodham and a cracker from Laura Watton. This Sunday, Oughtibridge make the long trip to Peterborough United Ladies in the FA cup.

probably been the best year on record for the condition of the course.

The club has received many positive comments from both its own members and visitors and this has had a positive impact on the number of playing members. Chairman of the Greens Committee, Alf Pearson, has commended both the greens staff and members who have volunteered for helping to keep the course in such excellent condition. The main results for the last week started on September 8 with the Ladies Past Captains competition. Margaret Pearson (25) was the overall winner with 33 points in the stableford format. Audrey Lee (18) was second with 31 points and Kath Busfield (23)

was third with 30 points.

On a glorious sunny day current lady captain, Alison Sedgwick, said: “The Past Lady Captains have enjoyed some excellent playing conditions as well as the chance to socialise afterwards in the clubhouse.” The gents mid-week Stableford took place on September 12 with J. Slodyczak (14) winning overall with 35 points. J. Bradley (17) was second with 34 points, one point in front of P. Jepson (12) in third place. Whilst the weather was mostly dry and warm through the day, it was a very windy day, affecting scores. Saturday September 14 saw the season climax with the monthly medal winners competition. J.

Whittaker (22) won the day with a net 62, beating P. Sheerin (11) who had the same net score into second place with a better back nine. E Steele (13) was third with a net 64. The day was well supported with over 70 members taking part and with perfect conditions, warm, sunny and no wind, scoring was excellent. Peter Finney (4) completed the lowest gross round with 72, net 68. Finally, the Ladies Section competed for the Ladies Autumn Cup on September 15. Terri Moffett (37) was the overall winner with 33 points. Hilja O Sullivan (19) was second, also with 33 points but a slightly lower back nine. Helen Moffett (29) current Ladies Vice-Captain, was third with 32 points.

STEELS GROUNDSMAN PICKS UP AWARD STOCKSBRIDGE Park Steels groundsman Mick Grimmer has won the Northern Premier League groundsman of the year trophy. Mick was recently presented the prize at the FA awards ceremony at St Georges Park England training centre. And Mick said he’d like to give special thanks to his assistant, Barrie Gosling. The Football Association’s (FA) Groundsperson of the Year Awards is a nationwide competition for nonleague football groundsman with

2018 representing the 17th time that these awards have taken place. The Awards recognise the contribution of Groundspeople, these ‘unsung heroes’, who work in all weather, often as volunteers, all year round, to make sure that thousands of matches can take place on a high standard of playing surface and with a very limited budget. The FA has a panel of judges - professional groundspeople themselves, who look at the quality of the pitch while also taking into consideration the skills and knowledge of the

Penistone pair complete 62 mile challenge

TWO hardy Penistone runners, Sarah Walch and Dean Allcroft, took on the challenge of the Hardmoors 60 which is a 62 mile race on the coast from Guisborough to Filey. Dean completed the challenge in 14 hours and 40 minutes whilst Sarah took 15 hours and 2 minutes. There was success for Penistone at the Vale of York half marathon including two runners inside the top 10. Gareth Cooke was first back for the club in fifth position in a time of 1-1145 which equalled his own club record.

Gary Briscoe was next in 8th place overall in a time of 1-1404 which guaranteed him a place in the London Marathon. Faye Williams also broke the club over-45 women’s record in a time of 1-38-51.

Despite being halted for 20 seconds by a farmer taking his herd of cows across the road Andrew Heppenstall won the undulating Shepley 10k in 37-19. Veteran Martin Ball finished in fourth place and also took first over-40 men’s prize. Further afield and in sunnier climbs Lesley Parker and Daren Nockels took on the La Trappa mountain race in Majorca. The 12.5 mile race was run in temperatures of 30 degrees and the first eight miles was uphill. Lesley claimed second place in the ladies over40 category in 2-22. Daren finished inside the top 50 in a time of 2-05. At the Yorkshire Downhill Time Trial, Penistone junior Tom Fryers demonstrated his excellent descending skills claiming fifth place ahead of club mate Jon Waller.

Stocksbridge slip up in league opener STOCKSBRIDGE Rugby slipped to a home defeat at the hands of visitors York RI at Coal Pit Lane on Saturday in their opening league fixture.

Bowskills range, and he judged the Bolsterstone wind well to nail the three points to get Stocksbridge up and running for the season.

This unexpected reverse has lead to Head Coach Rhys Keenan issuing an urgent wake up call to his troops.

Unfortunately, that was about as good as it got for the home side for the next 30 minutes or so as the visitors ran in three more tries to claim a try bonus point before the interval and effectively seal the result.

Selecting from an almost full strength rosta, Keenan had the luxury of Sam Whitaker, Liam O’Leary and himself on the bench to add to his options. An excellent opening spell from the home side saw the pack rumble down the slope, with Beal and back rowers Aspin and skipper Rowett leading the charges. A cleverly weighted pass from Woodcock, cutting out three players left Rowett with an opportunity, however, the chance was missed.

Stocksbridge weren’t helped when the luckless Ricky James succumbed to another hamstring injury and jet-heeled wing Ryan Smith also left the field with a shoulder injury to be replaced by the promising young flyer Connor Price. Keenan vented his fury at the break and demanded a reaction to a sluggish first half display, which ended 24-3 to York.

Bowskill created an overlap but kicked possession away, as did Frith when the running option was clearly proving more beneficial to the dominant Pigs pack.

In the second half, Stocksbridge looked like a totally different side, Keenan and Whitaker bringing some aggression and direction to the team, with the rest of the squad responded in positive fashion.

The visitors escaped with their try line intact and from almost their first attacking play, scored under the posts to take the lead. Mainly thanks to some paper thin Stocksbridge defence. York conceded a penalty for a ruck infringement within

Frith linked well with the forwards to set Jack Spencer and the ever-willing Ben Westby off on a winding run, that eventually worked its way back to skipper Ricky Rowett to plunge over from close range and Frith slotted the extras. Almost im-

mediately the forwards continued their momentum and drove deep into their opponents’ territory and Frith claimed a poachers try on the back of it to bring Stocksbridge right back into the contest. A moment of madness by veteran winger Joe Jones who ran around a stationary ball, when a size 11 boot would have been sufficient, gifted the visitors a soft try to wrap up the game with maximum points, leaving the defiant home side to rue their first half performance with the final score Stocksbridge Rugby 15-21 York RI. There were several decent individual performances for the home team with second row men Whitaker and Beal running hard-working back rower Rees Aspin close for the Bradfield Brewery Man of the Match award. Rees is sponsored by Mr Gez & Mrs Sue Aspin. “Too many errors and gifted tries,” was coach Keenan’s assessment of his charges afterwards, adding, “We just gave away possession too easily and must fix this up in training this week.” Stocksbridge travel to Wakefield to play Stanley Rodensians in round two of the league competition, and will be hoping to get back on track with a win on the road.

groundsperson, their ambitions for the pitch, the resources available, how often the pitch is used, and the amount of time they are able to work on the pitch. All the award winners, runners-up and highly commended groundsmen for 2018/19 season were invited to an awards day at St Georges Park in August which included presentations from Karl Standley – Wembley head groundsman and Scott Brooks – head of grounds and estate St George’s Park.

Stocksbridge second XI victorious in cup final

Sheffield Centralians 2nd XI 177-7 (Rowan Brearley 2-36, Will Cavanagh 2-39, Paul Hargreaves 2-40) Stocksbridge CC 2nd XI 180-6 (Ant Siddall 54, Jack Murfin 27*, Matt Hague 23)

THE big day arrived for Stocksbridge Cricket Club second team in the final of the Phil Denniff Intermediate Cup at Sheffield Civil Service ground. Their opposition, Sheffield Centralians, second team won the toss and chose to bat first. A good opening bowling spell from Chris Thwaites and Rowan Brearley restricted Centralians openers and Brearley took the first wicket bowling Stow leaving them 20-1 after ten overs. Paul Hargreaves came into the attack and took two wickets in his first three overs and Centralians were 62-3 at drinks after 20 overs which was a great effort by Stocksbridge with the ball and in the field. Centralians batsmen Wigglesworth and Clement fought back after drinks with a 60 run partnership until Rowan Brearley broke the partnership in his second spell. Will Cavanagh came into the attack and took two wickets in his second spell to

slow the batting teams progress as they finished on 177-7 after 40 overs which was a great effort by Stocksbridge to keep them under 200. The Stocksbridge reply lost the early wicket of captain Chris Ogley but a 40-run partnership between Ant Siddall and Bob Newton then a 50-run partnership between Ant Siddall and Matt Hague put Stocksbridge in a strong position.

A superb half century by club chairman Ant Siddall made the difference and the target was within site when he was out at 130-5 for 54. The bowling unit kept it tight Parkhead 1st XI 118-9 throughout and were excellently (Andy Hibbert 3-21, Les Harris supported by a strong fielding per2-19, Joe Hibbert 2-28) formance and this was evident by Stocksbridge 1st XI 93 all out restricting a strong Parkhead batting (Liam Grayson 22*) line up to just 118 from 40 overs.

The wickets were shared by all five bowlers with Andy Hibbert the pick taking 3-21. Les Harris and Joe Hibbert took two wickets each to end with figures of 2-19 and 2-28 respectively. Finally Jake Vickers and Liam Grayson both ended with 1 wicket each and identical figures of 1-18. In reply the run chased seemed to be going smoothly as the opening pair took the total to 30-0. After the game got heated, Parkhead upped there game and ripped through the middle order leaving Stocksbridge struggling at 56-8. A late rally from Liam Grayson and Andy Hibbert gave Stocksbridge a glimmer of hope but Parkhead picked up the final two wickets to

leave Grayson stranded unbeaten on 22 and Stocksbridge all out for 93. Unfortunately this meant that the first XI were unable to complete the double for the club as they ultimately fell 25 runs short. This now draws the curtain on another cricket season up at Bracken Moor for both of our sides. The season has been extremely successful as it saw the first XI finish runners up of both Division One and the Brian Winston Premier Cup. The second XI were able to avoid relegation in Division Three and also bring home some silverware for the club with the Phil Denniff Intermediate Cup victory. We now look forward to next season, Green Army!
