Two plead guilty to murders of brothers A woman and a man have pleaded guilty to the murders of two brothers in Shiregreen, Sheffield.

Sarah Barrass, 35, of Gregg House Road, and Brandon Machin, 39, of Burngreave Road, admitted the murder of Blake Barrass, 14, and his brother Tristan, 13 at Sheffield Crown Court. The defendants both pleaded guilty to two counts of murder, five counts of attempted murder and one count of conspiracy to murder relating to Blake and Tristan along with four other children in the family, all

aged under 13, who cannot be named for legal reasons. The Recorder of Sheffield, Judge Jeremy Richardson QC, said: “No words of mine can ever fully reflect the enormity of what you have both done. The crimes you have committed, quite frankly, speak for themselves. “The murder of two children, the attempted murder of four children and the overarching conspiracy to murder those children - I repeat, those crimes speak for themselves. “I have little doubt that each of you

will, in due course, be sentenced to several terms of life imprisonment. This may well be a case but it’s a matter for the judge - where a whole life order is imposed. The hearing follows an incident at a house on Gregg House Road, Shiregreen, in May this year. Barrass, the mother of the children, and Machin were both remanded in custody ahead of sentencing, which has been set for 12 November.

BT SCAMMERS FAIL IN £1000 scam on PENSIONER

An elderly widow from Thurgoland was very nearly scammed out of close to £1000 by a scammer claiming to be from BT openreach, last week.

The caller claimed to know that she was on slow broadband and could get onto a faster service, and that BT owed her over £300 The scammer then claimed he would refund her this money if she could

take a photo of her bank card on her mobile phone and send to him.

After the call which lasted nearly 2 and a half hours, she suddenly realised the call wasn’t right and contacted her bank immediately and saw that £650 and £250 had been taken out of her bank whilst she was on the phone. Thanks to the pensioners quick thinking the bank was able to stop the

money leaving her account.

The widowed pensioner then contacted the BT fraud dept on the advice of the bank who said this is happening on a large scale. BT give the following advice on their website: Fraudsters are known to make calls claiming to work for BT, when it’s actually a scam. They may ask you for personal information, want

access to your computer and in some cases, ask for your bank details. Don’t be fooled, this is fraud.

We take these cases very seriously. So please let us know if you’ve been the victim of a scam call so we can work to stop fraudsters in their tracks. Scammers are also targeting people who have been affected by the Thomas Cook collapse.

Last year, consumers lost a total of £844.8 million from unauthorised fraud. Top tips to avoid phone scams: Phone and holiday scams Phone scams, disguised as cold calls or even calls from companies you are a customer with, are on the rise with reported volumes increasing every year. Often during the summer months,

LOCAL man Henry Gillespie has won a Housing and Neighbourhood Service’s Green Fingers Gardening Competition 2019 award for his hard work and dedication. Henry, 89, won the award for his greenfingered expertise after transforming and maintaining the raised beds at Balfour House.

Life Coach Deborah Cundy from Oughtibridge Jumps 15,000ft in celebration of 25th of the Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity.

Top tips for avoiding being scammed over the phone: 1. Never disclose any personal information to anyone asking you to make a transaction over the phone and hang up if they are insistent or rushing

you to make a decision.

2. A genuine bank or organisation will never contact you out of the blue to ask for your PIN, full password or to move money to another account for “safe keeping”. 3. Only give out your personal or financial details to use a service that you have given your consent to, that you trust and that you are expecting to be contacted by.

4. If you’re unsure, hang up immediately and contact your bank using the number on the back of your card or statement. 5. If it looks too good to be true, it usually is. For holiday related calls, research the company using ATOL (Air Travel Organiser’s Licence) and ABTA (Association of British Travel Agents) databases and ask friends if it’s something they’re familiar with.

scammers will cold call or email, pretending to be a travel company, offering low prices on holidays to get hold of your personal info and bank details.

The award that Henry won was Best Sheltered Scheme Raised Planter, judged by Annice Fuller of Sheffield City Council’s Community and Engagement Team. Neighbourhood officers at Balfour

House; Maggie Fagan, Carol Knox and Cheryl Bennett, wanted to thank Henry for his hard work. Maggie told Look Local: “On behalf of all the neighbourhood officers and the residents here at Balfour House, I’d like to thank Henry for all his hard work and dedication. The garden needed a lot of work and Henry has worked really hard to get it up to scratch!” This year’s competition, which attracted entries from tenants, residents and primary schools across the city, culminated in an afternoon of prizegiving this week to thank everyone for their impressive entries. Their hard

work to produce award-winning floral displays over the year was celebrated in Sheffield’s Botanical Gardens, a perfect backdrop for the occasion. There were five prize categories as well as an additional Judges’ Choice award. The judges looked for well laid-out, wellmaintained gardens that contained a variety of healthy, colourful plants and environmentally friendly gardening solutions, such as composting bins, water butts, recycled / upcycled objects used as planters or garden furniture, and gardens that made space for nature by attracting birds, bees and other wildlife. The competition is now in its ninth year and is held

to reward tenants who maintain their gardens to a high standard to improve the appearance of estates. It also promotes the benefits that gardening can have for people’s physical and mental wellbeing and raises awareness of environmentally friendly and sust ainable gardening methods. Janet Sharpe, Director of Housing and Neighbourhood Services said: “It was lovely attending the awards ceremony and seeing the dedication and enthusiasm of the tenants and residents who entered the competition. Thank you to everyone who made the event a great success.

Chapeltown woman rebuilds hope for school kids in Kenyan village It is eleven years since Helen Flannagan, 71 of Chapeltown went out to Kenya on a safari holiday with her daughter and grandson.

Photo: Helen on the left, Sue to rear and Alison.

Whilst there Helen went on an eco-tour visiting people in villages and schools, she was shocked to see the conditions people were living in – the local school was a mud hut without a roof in one village and the retired catering equipment rep thought maybe I can do something to help Helen recalls the last ten years journey. When I first visited the school in 2008 there were 25 students, there are now 130 with more

still wanting attend.

to

every morning before school starts.

2009 saw the first build of two classrooms, which are still in use today. March of this year saw the final build of classroom 5 along with an office for the head master, the last three classrooms are all stone built, plastered inside and out and painted in the school colours. All classrooms have solar panels on the roof supplying electricity.

I did receive donations from various people totalling £670 from two businesses, however the £70 was donated by a 10 year old boy called Danny Bacon who lives in Sheffield, his Mum told him what I was doing so he had a cake stand at school to raise funds, with this sum I had desks made and his name inscribed on the front of them, he was highly delighted.

In March of this year I visited again with Sue and Alison who are fund raisers for the school and from Sue’s sister Jean Brown who gave funds from her registered charity for the build programme. Ali runs a lotto every week the winner receives half the funds the balance pays for the children to have breakfast

In addition to building, 64 new school uniforms were made, text books and exercise books supplied. We are going back in March 2020 with clothes, toys etc., for the children plus any funds raised by the ladies down South. l personally have never asked for monetary

donations as I am aware there are so many charities people support, l (we) are not a registered charity but I do know how the money is spent. It may well be my last visit, so l would like to say a huge thanks once again to all who have donated over the years. l personally have never asked for monetary donations as I am aware there are so many charities people support, l (we) are not a registered charity but I do know how the money is spent. Sheffield MG dealership

charging ahead!

A family run, Sheffield based motor dealership is celebrating, after this week, it welcomed the long-awaited MG ZS EV to its showroom and it hasn’t disappointed! Award winning, Eric Stead based in Ecclesfield welcomed the all-electric family SUV which has received phenomenal write ups from the motor industry’s leading experts. Not only does it rate better than some larger manufacturers in a recent report from Car Magazine including the likes of Jaguar, Audi and Nissan but it costs a lot less too! Simon Stead of the family run business comments: “We are very excited to have our first MG ZS EV in the showroom for customers to come and look at and take it on test drives. Since MG announced its first fully electric car we have been inundated with enquiries! “Now it’s here, it really does look and drive beautifully. It’s the perfect family car as the UK and the rest of the globe look to electric travel.”

Described as the first truly affordable, family friendly electric car, Eric Stead has already seen its pre order records smashed as South Yorkshire families want to get their hands on the stylish ZS which starts from just from £21,995. (After plug-in car grant and MG grant). MG Motor UK has smashed its new car pre-sales records by securing 1,000 orders for its sensational MG ZS EV in just two weeks! Lucky customers received a discount of £3,500 and received a free home charging point and standard installation. For its size the MG ZS EV is far from sluggish, it can accelerate from 0-62mph in 8.5sec, cover 163 miles on a single charge (with rapid charging capability) and accommodate the needs of most families thanks to its vast boot and large cabin.

The ZS EV is MG’s most high-tech car ever, with the MG Pilot driver assistance suite setting new standards of specification and delivering exceptional value for money. Packed with innovative features, the ZS EV is designed to provide customers with a stress-free driving experience. MG Pilot is a driver assistance suite which complements the driver and offers support when required. Excite and Exclusive versions both include MG Pilot as standard, with features including Advanced Emergency Braking, Blindspot Monitoring, Lane Keep Assist and Adaptive Cruise Control. The MG ZS EV is just the latest model to come from the motor giant following on from the ever-popular supermini the MG3 that is completely

customisable and the MG ZS which was launched back in 2017. MG Motor UK along with Eric Stead is certainly bucking the motor industry trend, seeing month on month sales of all models increasing. August was the best month to date with a 13.1% increase compared with the same month in 2018 and in a market that declined by 1.6% overall.

With the introduction of ZS EV and its selection of top-class dealerships, MG has firmly positioned itself as the UKs fastest growing car manufacturer. If you would like more information about Eric Stead, the new MG ZS EV or any of its used car offering visit the website: www. ericstead.co.uk or call: 0114 245 4404

Cyclists raise more than £60,000 A team of charity cyclists from South Yorkshire retail property company Dransfield Properties have raised an amazing £64,516 after completing their tough 300-mile challenge – facing climbs the equivalent of Mount Kilimanjaro. The 12 strong team took on the challenge in July this year, riding across Norway from Oslo to Stavanger in the 12th leg of a journey which has covered 4,800 miles across 15 countries. Since 2007 the team have raised more than £500,000 for charity. The annual ride is headed by Managing Director of Dransfield Properties, Mark Dransfield. This year was a particularly tough challenge as the team cycled in memory of Mark’s wife Deborah Holmes who sadly died of cancer earlier this year. The money raised in this year’s ride has now been donated to Action Against Cancer, St Luke’s Hospice and The Dransfield Foundation and was presented to the charities in a special cheque presentation held at Fox Valley this week. Mark said: “The ride is always a massive personal challenge for us all, this year was incredibly tough with some really hard climbs – Debs was definitely the inspiration to keep us all going. “The response to our fundraising has been incredible and I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who donated, your generosity really is going to make a difference to the charities we’re supporting.”

Jack Kidder from St Luke’s Hospice said: “Thank you to the incredible team of cyclists who took on the Tour De Europe this year and all of the support staff who helped them do it. All of us at St Luke’s are truly inspired and grateful for their amazing support which will allow us to continue to provide our essential palliative care for adults and their loved ones in Sheffield”.

Your Letters Stocksbridge – A Dementia Friendly Community

Got something to say? Email us at news@looklocal.org.uk Publication subject to space and content.

Publishing does not mean we agree with the content.

A letter to the Remainers, including our MP. I was born a year after the Second World War ended. Rationing was still in force. My father and Uncle were both in the RAF and fortunately lived threw it. Britain was an absolute mess and it was due to loans, that have now been repaid, from the USA that it recovered. Germany recovered with financial help from the USA., Britain, France and Russia. It was left with no debt to pay, unlike after the First World War. lf you bought a car, travelled on a bus, by tram or by train, had to use a lorry, van or tractor it was 95% certain it was made in Britain. Sheffield (and Stocksbridge) was the king in the Western World of high quality stainless steel. How things have changed in the last 40 years, since we joined the EEC and were dragged into the EU. If you buy or travel on any of the previously mentioned forms of transport it is highly unlikely that they are made in Britain. For example Sheffield trams are made in Spain. Towns, particularly in the north have been decimated when there local factory or industry has shut. (NO mention of coal mining, which still carries on in other EC countries). l get sick of reading about the things the EU has financed to our supposed benefit, as if it were a gift. lt is OUR money that we have had to give to the EU that has financed this. For every pound we give we get about 70% back. Some of this goes to Poland to help with the making of Ford Transits, which used to be made in Britain. One must remember that only three countries give financially to the EU, the rest take. No mention of fishing and agriculture today. The sooner we are out the better, preferably without a deal, such that we can use OUR money to support Our country, and spend the said money on what we want, not what Brussels tells us to. Rebuild Britain has it was thirty or so years ago. David Lawson

PARKING Hello, I wish to respond to the letter in last weeks looklocal complainig about parking on pavements and must say I agree totally, one of the worst and dangerous is near the top of hole house lane where their are 3 cars/vans [they are from the same house/firm] parked on the pavement and to get past one has to go into the road as there is NO PAVEMENT on the other side to use and its ON A BEND, this is very dangerous for anything [cars or people] going down the hill as one has to go into the centre of the road and face traffic coming up the hill [who have the right of way] this also a bus route and the bus at times has problems because of the selfish parking, if the car/van owners would park just bit further up the hill [ON THE ROAD] they would only have to WALK a few more yards, I have told the police [at deepcar station and the council] but nothing been done, I suppose someone will have be hurt or worse before these selfish people get at least a ticket for obstructing the highway [parking on a bend] or blocking a persons right to walk on the pathway,. Thanks Bill

Stocksbridge Community Care Group is pleased to announce that following a successful tender process, the contract for Stocksbridge & Upper Don community dementia provision has been awarded to them from Sheffield City Council. The contract includes: providing dementia-specific local information, advice and guidance, providing 6-monthly courtesy calls to people diagnosed with dementia, running a community dementia grant pot for the area, providing a specialist dementia group (a more frequent Memory Time Café), and dementiafriendly activities (a Musical Memories Community Tour). The contract will start on 1st October 2019 and run to 31st December 2021. Dave Cooper who is currently running a number of successful dementia projects in North Sheffield will be involved in Project Design and Development for SCCG. Dave said ”This is fantastic news not only will it help improve the quality of life for those newly diagnosed with dementia and those living well with dementia but we can through the grant pot assist those groups that wish to include them more in our friendly and caring community. This could not be timelier as we are in the process of developing a community telephone help line and website to better inform people what is available in the Stocksbridge and Upper Don area to combat isolation and loneliness”. For more information on Community Dementia Provision in the area please ring the Stocksbridge Community Care Group office on 0114 283 0141or email: sccg.communitydementiaprovision@ gmail.com Together we really can make a difference. Penistone Green Homes Day Earlier on in the year Upper Don Green Energy Community Group planned a series of home visits and invited anyone interested to come along. We visited people with ground source heat pump, air source heat pump, domestic wind turbine, solar/ hot water panel, bio-mass boiler, grey water recycling, photo-voltaic panels, electric cars, low-energy lighting, battery storage and monitoring systems. The days were very successful, largely because of the passion the owners had for their projects. We are planning another day based around Penistone, on Saturday, 19th October and want to invite anyone interested to come along, whether you are thinking in terms of putting in some form of green energy or generally interested in the subject. The day starts at 10am and finishes at about 4pm, with lunch at Penistone Leisure Centre. Businesses are also very welcome- we promise you all a stimulating and informative day with ample opportunity to ask questions. Everyone needs to book a place in advance because we can’t overwhelm home owners and we need to share lifts as parking is restricted in some cases. To find out more and book your place, please ring 07707762995. None of our group has any financial interest in any renewable energy company, so there won’t be any hard sell! REMAINER

It is unfortunate that Craig Morris [issue 1080] has had such an unpleasant experience with ‘so called EU citizens’. One’s personal experiences will, understandably and inevitably, colour one’s ‘world view’ to some extent. Generally, studies by organisations such as the Migration Observatory; Oxford Economics; the Government’s Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) and the Office for Budget Responsibility have all shown that immigration to the UK delivers a net positive financial benefit although the estimates do vary. Consider also that, for qualified immigrants, another country has absorbed the cost of their education from childhood and very likely through university and even further – medical school perhaps. In a sense, we are therefore being gifted a rather expensive resource at no expense to the UK tax payer. This, of course, is a much wider ‘world view’. Perhaps it is incumbent on us all to take as wider ‘world view’ in all walks of life as we can. It may not change our minds. We may be none the wiser. But, at least, we will be better informed. Vince Giles

Grenoside grumble I read with interest Joyce Eastwood’s letter in 26th Sept. issue regarding homelessness. Once again a Grenoside resident puts forward scant reasons why Grenoside must remain ‘untouched’ by any suggestion of anything which may disrupt the ‘primarily privately owned’ status quo of their village. The finger is always pointed towards Chapeltown and High Green. I suggest that these people climb down from their ‘high horses’ and realise their community has no privileged status despite the notion some have that they are a cut above us lesser mortals. Sue Thorne Lifelong High Green resident (formerly a small village)

The Publicity Adventures of Angela Smith MP. Not too many moons ago, Angela Smith was a Labour MP. The Labour Party publicity machine often worked in overdrive to ensure that Angela was exposed to as many publicity and photo opportunities as she could possibly attend. Angela was regularly photographed signing petitions and launching proclamations. How we, her electorate, loved to read the multitude of news articles about Angela’s exploits, all supported by excellent photographs, of course. Indeed, some wags within the electorate even began referring to the Right Honourable lady as Angela ‘Photo Opportunity’ Smith, such was their regard for her endeavours. Sadly, this soon changed when Angela sashayed into the Independent MP sphere, without a publicity machine. To the delight of many of Angela’s followers, her stay in the publicity wilderness was short lived. The advent of Change UK changed Angela’s fortunes. Joining Change UK signalled a new publicity era for Angela and she was soon thrust back into the limelight. Angela even contributed to the publicity machine, by describing people of colour as having a “funny tinge”. Those two little words propelled Angela to national prominence. Quite a coup. Unfortunately, when Angela left Change UK to rejoin her Independent colleagues, the publicity graveyard beckoned, and Angela was soon driven back into publicity obscurity. Now a recent Liberal Democrat convert, one could only hope that Angela’s publicity exploits would again take centre stage. Regrettably, this has not proved to be the case. Page 2 of last week’s Look Local carried an excellent editorial piece about Operation Owl. Alongside was a lovely photograph of Angela and others at Langsett Barn. Unfortunately, there was not one single mention of Angela in the editorial. Not one. How disappointing. Here’s hoping that you have better luck with the publicity machine next time you switch political parties, Angela.

Dear sir. Please forgive my anonymity. but the various correspondents in “Look Local” of September 12th made for very interesting reading. However, I believe that it is time for someone to express a few alternative comments and these may be of interest to others who read your newspaper. I am a remainer: I have never recognised the result of the 2016 referendum. Many will ask why. and this is a fair question My reason is that the referendum was improperly conducted. If I may use the analogy of a trial? Evidence is given by both defence and prosecution witnesses. After due deliberation the verdict is announced; the defendant is guilty. Immediately after the announcement it becomes clear that witnesses on both sides were lying. In these circumstances there would have to be another trial. no question about that. Now. to return to the debate about Brexit. The circumstances are precisely the same; both sides were lying. We need another referendum, but it must be carried out in a proper manner. There has over the months been much vilification by Brexiteers of immigrants, the European Union and indeed. anyone who holds contrary views regarding Brexit. Unfortunately many members of the public have been seriously and deliberately misled by these people. Please, for heavens sake. stop blaming immigrants and Europe for the mess that certain groups have created; blame those who are really responsible. Let us start with just about every administration we have had for decades. Governments from both sides of today’s politics. Their serious neglect of various areas of the UK is nothing less than a disgrace. I’m afraid. that at times. we get the governments we deserve! I believe. however that the main culprits in the mess of Brexit are the members of the ultra right wing of the Tory Party. These troublemakers. for that’s what they are, are at the root of our present difficulties. Having reduced so many of their Tory colleagues to little more than intolerant bigots they are trying to bully the country into accepting their policies of lies and deceit. I am happy to acknowledge that the E.U. is an imperfect body, but why not try to change it from within? There are two members which have some of the worlds largest economies and hence massive political clout; they are Germany and the U.K. They with the help of others, should have sufficient influence to make any necessary changes. This awful period of our history has revealed the very worst from some members of society. We read and hear of threats, abuse of all kinds and sheer intolerance. Think about those years around the English Civil War; families split because of opposing views, some never to be reconciled. I know of one family where normal conversation between certain members has ceased; what are we doing to ourselves ?. I have always considered our nation to be home to kind, decent, compassionate souls. Finally and for what my feelings are worth. I believe that Brexit is not about immigration. nor is it about trade or the E.U.; its about money, very large quantities of it. If we leave the EU. some of the richest members of society will be considerably richer whereas the poorer folk will remain just as poor. Please think very seriously indeed about the above not forgetting all the other numerous ramifications regarding Brexit. Yours faithfully.

Participatory Budgeting Dear Editor, This is just to let you know that Stocksbridge Town Council has decided that it will not be inviting applications for bids this Autumn, because there is not sufficient money in this Participatory Budgeting pot. Full service should be resumed by Spring! Meanwhile, the small grants pot is available. Best wishes Barbara Horsman (chair of PB group)

The Sheffield City Region Mayor has written to Rail Minister and to Network Rail on delays to Hope Valley Line improvements Also plans to raise the issue in Parliament Following the news of yet another delay to the upgrade works on the Sheffield to Manchester Hope Valley line, Mayor Dan Jarvis has asked for an urgent meeting with the Rail Minister so that passengers don’t have to keep waiting for improvements to a poor service. In a letter to Chris Heaton-Harris MP, Mayor Jarvis expressed “deep frustration and disapp ointment” at the delay, which would see essential upgrades to the line

not complete until 2023. Commenting on the delay, Mayor Jarvis said: “I’m not prepared to sit back and watch the passengers I represent treated like second class citizens by Network Rail. The Hope Valley line between Sheffield and Manchester connects 4.2 million people, and the current service frequency and journey times are not fit for purpose. These works should have already finished, and yet still they haven’t started. This is simply not good enough. “In the 21st century it should not take between 50 and 55 minutes to travel the 40 miles between Sheffield and Manchester. The planned upgrade works are vital

for businesses, for communities, and for future economic growth in the North. In the letter to Mr Heaton-Harris, Mayor Jarvis writes: “These upgrades are one of the only remaining undelivered elements of the Northern Hub and an essential pre-requisite for the Northern Powerhouse Rail works. They now need to happen as a matter of urgency. “With delay being compounded with further delay it is hard to have confidence that this new completion date will be achieved. On that basis I would like to meet with you as soon as possible to discuss how the Department is going to bring real urgency and pace to the project.”

The Mayor also plans to raise the issue in Parliament. In a separate letter from Mayor Jarvis to the Chief Executive of Network Rail, supported by Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham; Julie Dore, Leader of Sheffield City Council and Sir Richard Leese, Leader of Manchester City Council, Network Rail is urged to confirm that the planned works will commence this year, as planned.

Could you volunteer to support a child in care or care leaver? Sheffield Council is asking for more people to volunteer as independent visitors. Sheffield City Council is looking for volunteers who can make a difference to the lives of Sheffield’s young people in care and care leavers. The volunteers, known as independent visitors, build helpful and positive relationships with young people who are in care or who have recently left care. Independent visitors befriend and visit young people once a month to do fun activities and help to provide support and

consistency in their lives. Lauren Hart, 34, is an independent visitor who has been volunteering for a year and a half. She said: “Volunteering as an independent visitor has been by far one of the best things I have ever done. Not only do we have fun, we are also developing a positive relationship and it means a lot to me to support such an incredible young person. “The Sheffield C h i l d r e n ’s Involvement Team are so supportive and generally all round amazing! “The process

matching is so

thorough and I feel like me and the young person are so well suited and have similar interests. “We get on so well and have so many great experiences; I look forward to our meet ups each month. I am also learning so much about myself and I’m really grateful for this fantastic opportunity.” Councillor Jackie Drayton, Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Families at Sheffield City Council, said: “It is really important for our children and young people to have strong, positive relationships and

independent visitors can really help whether it’s playing football in the park, seeing the latest film or taking an interest in a young person’s hobby.” “If you’re over 21, reliable and enthusiastic and think you could make a difference to the lives of Sheffield young people in care and care leavers, we’d love to hear from you.” For more information about becoming an independent visitor, please email iv@ sheffield.gov.uk or call Angela Taylor or Sarah Javes on 0114 2288522/0114 2288556.

Park set for a transformation Colley Park in Parson Cross is about to get a makeover as part of the council’s ongoing work to improve parks and playgrounds across Sheffield, as work has begun on site this week. A range of improvements are being carried out including children’s play equipment, a mini bike and scooter track and a steel and concrete parkour free running area. The park is close to several local areas including Parson Cross, Ecclesfield and Southey. Locals gave their views about what they wanted at the park through consultation, taking place with people from these communities, Monteney Primary

School, Chaucer School and Yewlands Academy. The results showed a great need for more activities for young people in the area. Last year the parks and countryside service began the initial phase of works at Colley Park, removing old equipment and improving the park’s boundaries, as well as planting and maintaining trees. Through the improvements Sheffield City Council aims to provide much needed new facilities for the surrounding communities, with many opportunities for local people – particularly the younger generation – to be physically active and enjoy the

Councillor Mary Lea, Cabinet Member for Culture, Parks and Leisure at Sheffield City Council, said: “The improvements to Colley Park will transform this green space in to an adventure playground for people of all ages. Whether it’s scrambling on the play equipment, free running on the parkour course, razzing around the bike track or simply walking the dog, there will be plenty of opportunities to get

active, have fun and enjoy being outdoors. “We know that quality green spaces have a direct positive impact on people’s mental and physical health and we are working hard to address inequalities across the city to make sure everyone has access to a park that provides leisure and activity, is well maintained and safe. “The works we are completing here will deliver on all of those priorities and I’d like to thank Councillors Tony Damms and Andy Bainbridge for their commitment to making sure this happens. I’m sure Colley will become a favourite meeting point for many people .”

Andy Ring’s hat-trick and a double from Jordan Coduri secured a comfortable home win for in form Penistone Church at home to Ecclesill United. Church manager Ian Richards said after the game “That was an exciting performance today, the players were exceptional throughout both offensively, scoring five goals but defensively as well, they were excellent.”

“Personally I’d like the current promotion to carry on. I think they’ve done a great job over the past few years and we all have common goals. There’s still so much to achieve with the Tigers.

“This is a club I love. I regard it as my home. I started my career at Sheffield, and went on to be the No.1 and captain and won the Premier League Riders’ Championship. I’d always want to be involved with the club. “It’s obviously a huge honour to be given the Great Britain job. Olly and I go back a long way and it’s a very exciting challenge for both of us. “The new Great Britain set-up under Rob Painter is a breath of fresh air. We have a big job on our hands but it’s one we will relish. Stead, 37, admits it was a hard campaign for the Tigers as they fell short of the pre-season hype as Championship favourites. He added: “It was a strange season really. I felt we were just a fraction short of getting results. Then I also believe the season ended too quickly for us. In the last month I thought the new side was getting into its stride. “However, that’s how it goes sometimes. We’ve had some massive highs and some lows at the club but we return next year hungrier and stronger.”

Stocksbridge Golf Club Update: Wet weather for the past week or so has affected the amount of golf played at Stocksbridge Golf Club. The course has been closed for the past couple of days because of the heavy weekend rainfall, particularly on Sunday. This resulted in the Autumn Mixed Foursomes being postponed for a later date. Earlier in the week the Dragons Section had a reasonably dry day on 25 September and Les Wright (14) enhanced his lead in the Summer Cup with 40 points. In second place was John Sawdon (19) with

39 points and Sandy Murphy (13) was third with 38 points. Les has built a comfortable lead in the Summer Cup League and will be confident of overall victory. The Gents Mid-Week stableford on the 26 September had a small field with much more challenging weather. Liam O’Sullivan (5) won with 37 points and in his round manged four birdies. Phillip Jepson (12) was second with 35 points and Peter Finney (5) came in third with 31 points.

On Friday 27 September Liana O’Sullivan (2) won the Ladies Back 9 with 18 points in the Stableford format. Hilja O’Sullivan (9) was second with 14 points and Heather Evans (15) was third with 12 points. A small number of hardy Gents took on the high winds and wet weather with Saturdays Pro’s Prize. Dave King (21) won with a highly credible 41 points. Matt Slater (31) was second with 39 points and Dave Buxton (8) was third with 38 points.

Stocksbridge ‘edged-out’ Stocksbridge 9-10 Hessle

Globe Holidays sponsored Stocksbridge Rugby were pipped by just one point by Hull based Hessle Rugby at Coal Pit Lane at the weekend, with the Humbersiders eventually scraping home by 10pts to 9pts, thanks to a controversial penalty award late on in the game. On a wet and blustery afternoon, Head Coach Keenan recalled Jack Spencer to partner scampering Ben Westby at half back, and James Neal at hooker. Young flyer Connor Price earned a starting berth on the left wing, and the versatile Pete Newton returned after injury to partner the rampaging O’Leary in the centres. Beal, that man Frith, Jones and Keenan along with Pat O’Leary formed an impressive back up bench. After an intense warm up, skipper Rowett chose to play with the slope in the 1st half, and Stocksbridge had the better of the early exchanges, camping in their visitors half for long periods. Much against the run of play a stray pass from Westby was intercepted by the visiting fly half who won the foot race to the line to give Hessle the lead. Again Stocksbridge attacked, and had the better of a significantly larger opposing pack, one of the few high tackles to be penalised resulted in Bowskill landing a penalty to get Stocksbridge on the board. Great tackling lead by workhorse flanker Reece Aspin, and the improving Lewis Bowman helped keep Hessle out when they forced Stocksbridge to defend their line during the last minutes of the first half. A relief when the ref blew for half time with the score Stocksbridge rugby 3pts – Hessle 7pts. Stocksbridge dominated a thrilling 2nd stanza, where both sides could have improved their points tally, but defences were certainly

on top. Bowskill slotted a penalty from close range for another high tackle offence, then nudged Stocksbridge in front with Bowskill’s third effort, again for a high tackle, where the official should have really looked at a higher sanction. Despite their best efforts, Stocksbridge couldn’t force a try of their own and as the home side looked to take advantage of a knock on by the visitors the referee inexplicably called the luckless Rowett off side and former Sheffield Eagles star Craig Poucher kicked the resulting penalty to give Hessle the narrowest of advantages. This they held out until the final frustrating whistle to record a victory by 10pts to 9pts, in which neither side deserved to lose, but Stocksbridge do take a losing bonus point for their efforts. In a total squad effort with rugby supremo Keenan rotating his charges, there was again

improvement from Stocksbridge, but losing this game was a bitter pill to swallow. ‘credit to Hessle’ said Director of Rugby Andy Tyers afterwards ‘they defended well and took the only real clear cut chance of the game’ adding ‘our progress is encouraging and we’re very close to being a handful when we get our go forward working’. The Bradfield Brewery Man of the Match award went to the hard working skipper, Ricky Rowett for an inspirational performance. Newton went well in his comeback, and youngster Jack ‘milky’ Martin continued his development with a foraging display in the back row, as did the jet heeled Ryan Smith on the flank. It’s derby time this weekend at Stocksbridge Rugby head for their nearest rivals Sheffield Oaks, kick off in Parson Cross Park is 3pm.

Derry Robson was sent clear on 39 minutes but couldn’t make his angled shot count as Steels’ ‘keeper Edward Hall parried the ball away, and Alex Peterson saw his follow up shot blocked as did Nathan Curtis when the ball fell to him. For Stocksbridge’s part, only Nenad Smilianic and Luke Mangham registered shots in the first 45 minutes and both failed to trouble Ryan Musselwhite in the Belper goal. Steels looked more dangerous after the break, and Lewis Whitham fired a shot just past the far post within seconds of the restart.

Steels’ skipper Kurtis Turner hit a fierce shot goal bound on 60 minutes which Musselwhite blocked, but afterwards play became scrappy and disjointed as both teams tried to create opportunities. It was Belper who sparked something of a revival on 68 minutes when Craig Nelthorpe’s free kick was headed back into the mix by Nathan Curtis, however Hall in the Steels goal was able to snatch the ball away from Belper players running in. Nelthorpe had a great chance to put things to bed for Belper as he ran clear on 71 minutes but appeared to lose his nerve and sent the ball soaring over the goal with only Hall to beat.

Jordon Lemon looked likely to snatch an equaliser for Stockbridge on 75 minutes with a powerful drive that Musselwhite fisted away. George Milner had two opportunities in the final moments to kill the game but his first effort went over the cross bar, and deep in added on time, he had done all the hard work with a mazy run but somehow managed to miss the target completely. Steels are at home in midweek against Chasetown in the league and on Saturday make the journey to Wisbech Town. The scheduled Legends game between Steels and Sheffield United to mark the contributions of former Steels Chairman Allen Bethel was sadly called off due to a waterlogged pitch.
