CCTV captured carer stealing from dementia sufferer A FORMER carer from Stocksbridge has admitted stealing from an elderly vascular dementia sufferer she was supposed to be looking after. Caroline Bastable of Wheatacre Road was caught stealing items including cash, jewellery and perfume on CCTV which had been installed by the 80-year-old victim’s son after he became suspicious. Worryingly, she was also seen failing to give the elderly woman her medication. In November 2017, items such as food and milk began to disappear from the victim’s home. A family friend then noticed cash, which had been hidden around the house, was missing. A large quantity of cigarettes, hidden at the back of a cupboard, had also been taken.

bound victim her medication. When later questioned by police, she stated she “must have forgotten.

Throughout December that year, footage from the cameras evidenced Bastable stealing from the then 80year-old on more than one occasion. She helped herself to food from the kitchen cupboards and was often seen rifling through drawers, jewellery boxes and the victim’s purses hunting for cash and other valuables.

Detective Constable Sam Carr, of Rotherham CID, who led the investigation said: “This has been a lengthy inquiry and I would like to thank the victim’s family for their support and assistance over the past two years.

On one occasion, she stole a gold bangle as the pensioner slept in the same room. Later that same evening, she helped herself to toiletries and perfume from gift sets. Some of these items were recovered by police during a search of Bastable’s home following her arrest on December 17, 2017. Worryingly, the 42-year-old was regularly seen to not give the house-

This led to the victim’s son installing the CCTV around his mother’s property, in Barnsley.

“The victim’s son and daughter-inlaw relied upon and trusted Bastable to take care of their mum at her most vulnerable. To abuse this trust, and her position, is disgusting and I am pleased that Bastable is now facing a substantial prison term. Bastable pleaded guilty to three counts of wilful neglect and two counts of theft at Doncaster Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday November 19. She will appear at Sheffield Crown Court on January 9, 2020 for sentencing.

Council say they’ll support those affected by recent flooding FOLLOWING substantial rainfall over recent weeks, Sheffield is continuing to work closely with those in the worst affected areas, including Deepcar and Ecclesfield. As well as offering financial support to affected residents and businesses, clean-up efforts in the rivers and brooks have been ongoing, with the council working alongside the Environment Agency and other key partners. Divers have also been busy clearing debris that has collected around bridges and culverts, ensuring that rivers continue to flow and cranes have been brought in to remove large trees that have been washed into waterways. Whilst the 64mm of heavy rain brought travel disruption to many areas of the city, it was thanks to the council’s hard-working contractors, partners, community volunteers and investment in new flood defences that very few properties were flooded during this spate of bad weather. The significant investment in flood defences by council protected the city and its residents and although the amount of rainfall was substantial the river defences coped well, overtopping only slightly.

The council will suspend council tax for the affected properties for a period of three months to allow residents to get back on their feet. In addition, a recently announced government scheme is providing £500 to those whose houses have been affected by flooding and the charity organisation, South Yorkshire Community Fund (SYCF) will be providing £100 compensation to affected residents. Sheffield City Council has made a donation to SYCF and if people would like to support affected residents, all further donations should be sent to them. They will ensure that these much needed funds are passed on to those who have been affected by severe flooding in Doncaster and Rotherham. Executive Director of Finance and Resources at Sheffield City Council, Eugene Walker said: “Sheffield saw an unprecedented amount of rain, which started on Thursday November 7 and didn’t stop completely until the weekend. “Not only did the river levels rise considerably during this time but the amount of surface water and flash flooding meant that there was travel disruption for people coming in and out of the city.

“Our focus now is to support those who have been affected by the flooding, mainly in the areas of Ecclesfield and Deepcar. A refuge centre was opened by the council on Thursday in Hillsborough but was later closed, when it became apparent that affected residents had made their own arrangements. “Whilst we appreciate funding will only go some way to restoring property and possessions damaged by

flood water, we hope it will offer some comfort in the midst of difficult times. “We would like to say a huge thank you to the members of communities who have shown amazing resilience throughout this period and offer reassurance that we will continue to work with our dedicated partners, signposting people to relevant services and available funding where we can.”

For local small and medium sized businesses affected, the council will be adopting a Government scheme which will include financial support and business rates relief for affected properties. For more information on the South Yorkshire Community Fund (SYCF) and for details on how to donate, visit: https://www.sycf.org.uk/

Local charity raises funds through sales of sustainably sourced firewood

RESIDENTS DISAPPROVE OF PLAN FOR 42 HOMES A NUMBER of residents close to a proposed development for 42 homes are encouraging local people to voice their opinions. A planning application for the development for farm land just off Wood Royd Road in Deepcar has been submitted to the council but local residents say that they don’t think it should go ahead. Stocksbridge Town Council have objected to the plans.

it would be a real shame to lose that history.”

It has been submitted by developers DLP, who also submitted the Hollin Busk plans that have still yet to be approved or rejected.

Another objector pointed to the fact that homes in the area suffered from flooding during the recent heavy rain.

One resident told Look Local: “We have no problem with houses being built in Stocksbridge and Deepcar but why build on Green Belt land? The land currently has sheep on it so is in use and the plans would see the old farm house demolished. We think

She told Look Local: “We were told that flooding was not an issue here. Two days later, my house flooded! The water runs straight down the hill and it went through my house. The field actually helps the homes lower down as it soaks some of the water up. If it’s concreted over, it will just run straight down.”

Another objection to the plans includes the destruction of what residents say is a vital green corridor link which currently runs down to Fox Glen and down to Clough Dike. The loss of the natural habitat for a wide diverse range of wildlife has also been cited, with bats, owls, birds of prey, foxes, deer, rabbits and numerous species of birds present. In the summer time when the fields do not contain any sheep, the fields are full of

long grasses and a variety of wild flowers. Traffic is another issue that has been raised. With a number of schools in the area, they fear that the current road system could not cope with the increase in traffic. One side of the road doesn’t have a footpath, raising concerns for pedestrians. You can view and comment on the application on Sheffield City Council’s planning portal, using the reference 19/03890/out

STOCKSBRIDGE countryside management charity, the Steel Valley Project, are helping to raise additional funds for their volunteer work programme by selling naturally seasoned hardwood logs for use on open fires and wood burners. The charity, which was founded in April 1988 through a partnership between the original Stocksbridge Steelworks (now Liberty Speciality Steels) and Stocksbridge Town Council has a team of dedicated volunteers helping them to deliver their environmental and community activities throughout the year.

Their work can be seen across Sheffield, with the charity involved in the management of local habitats for the benefit of wildlife, people, heritage and the landscape. The logs are a by-product of their projects in sustainably managed woodland around the area. Recent work includes plantation thinning in Bitholmes Wood, Wharncliffe Side for the Woodland Trust in order to help encourage more woodland flowers and to remove diseased trees. All the wood is cut by Steel Valley Project volunteers and left to season for two years under cover. Coming from the best UK tree spe-

April 29 on Lydgate Road, Corbden View, Stannington Rise and Barlow Road in Sheffield. Jones targeted the properties for cash, vehicles and jewellery.

Ethan Jones, 19, of Findon Street, Sheffield pleaded guilty to attempted robbery, burglary and theft from a motor vehicle at Sheffield Crown Court on Friday November 15.

He also pleaded guilty to theft of a motor vehicle from Leppings Lane in Hillsborough in April 2019.

On Sunday April 28, Jones went into the Malin Bridge Mini Mart on Loxley Road and threatened the cashier with an adjustable spanner, demanding they hand over money from the till. The cashier refused and as Jones left empty handed, he smashed the shop’s window, causing £500 worth of criminal damage. In addition to the robbery, Jones pleaded guilty to four charges of burglary, which happened between Thursday April 25 and Monday

CHARITY Support Dogs is urgently looking for people in Sheffield and South Yorkshire to take care of puppies who are training to become assistance dogs. The charity, whose national training centre is in Sheffield, is looking for loving homes for puppies up to 15 months before they embark on their full-time training to become assistance dogs. ‘Puppy socialisers’ will be expected to be at home for most of the day to dedicate their time to training and raising a puppy, and attend regular group obedience classes to further their training. They must also live within an hour’s drive of Sheffield.

T/Detective Sergeant James Dyson said: “We know the harm burglary can cause and the long term implications it can have on victims, this is why we are committed to making sure we take all action possible to put these offenders before the courts.

“Just loving cute puppies is not enough – potential puppy socialisers will have to be prepared to put in some hard work, cope with typical puppy behaviour and are committed to meeting the puppy’s physical and mental needs,” said Support Dogs’ chief executive Rita Howson.

“I am pleased that the courts have taken the crimes Jones committed seriously and that he is now locked away from causing further fear or harm to our communities.”

In the past Support Dogs has recruited prospective assistance dogs between the ages of 10 and 18 months from a variety of sources including Guide Dogs, rescue centres, council dog pound, and unwanted pets. By taking on puppies from the age of eight weeks the charity is hoping to address the rising demand for highly trained assistance dogs from the public and boost the number of dogs it trains every year. For every dog it trains the charity receives over 50 requests for help. Support Dogs also needs foster carers to provide a loving home for its dogs in training, as none of its trainee pooches ever spends a night in kennels. If you’re interested in becoming a puppy socialiser find out more on https://www.supportdogs.org.uk/puppy-socialiser ring 0114 2617800 or info@supportdogs.org.uk

“But they will have the enormous satisfaction of knowing they are helping us train more much-needed assistance dogs for people with autism, epilepsy and physical disability.”

Whips and play in Worrall’s parks TWENTY-SEVEN hardy souls turned out last Saturday morning with their spades despite the amber weather warning of heavy rain. They were rewarded with a dryish hour for planting 420 tree whips in the park below Worrall Road. Sheffield Parks’ Tim instructed them on how to go about it though given the conditions he skipped the watering in stage.

Besides local lad Tim, there were Community Forestry Manager Catherine and Chris there giving guidance. The planted whips were subjected to Tim’s tug ‘n twang test but not a single one had to be replanted. So congratulations to all involved, especially Pete who worked with the Woodland Trust to obtain the whips. The morning was organised by the Worrall Environmental Group. They have been

asked by Sheffield Parks and Countryside’s Amie Rowland if users Sycamore Park (the one nearer the school) play equipment can help her. The parks people have £13,000 set aside for this park but want to know what locals, particularly youngsters or those with young children, think is needed. Worrall Post Office have some of Amie’s questionnaires for collection and return. So have your say.

BREAKFAST SHOW HOSTED IN LEISURE CENTRE TOBY Foster hosted his Radio Sheffield Breakfast Show from Stocksbridge Community Leisure Centre on Monday November 25. Local election candidates were there to answer questions along with other guests including director and trustee of the centre Fay Howard, Stocksbridge Gymnastics Club’s Heather Clough, David Wright of Stocksbridge Pentaqua Swimming Club and volunteer Gill Wolfe. ‘Singing in... Oughtibridge’ and ‘Singing in.. Stocksbridge’ choir provided the Christmas carols. Advertising Feature: Look Local Newspaper does not support any political parties.

VOTE

THE Prime Minister’s girlfriend, Carrie Symonds, and the Number 10 dog Dilyn visited Deepcar on 14th November to talk to voters. They were here to support the General Election campaign of local Conservative parliamentary candidate Miriam Cates. Miriam said: “It was great to have Carrie with us and Dilyn went down very well with voters on the doorstep. The message we’re getting from voters is clear - they are frustrated with parliament and they want Brexit done.” Carrie and Dilyn’s visit follows Boris Johnson’s walk

around Fox Valley in September, emphasising just how important this area is to the Conservatives who only need a few more votes to win Penistone and Stocksbridge. Miriam said: “I have spoken to a lot of voters in the area who tell me they are disillusioned with politicians. I want to change that. I was born and brought up in Sheffield and I’ve lived in Oughtibridge with my family for the last 10 years. If I’m elected as the MP for Penistone and Stocksbridge on 12th December, I will fight for a better deal for our area because it is my home.”

A fresh start for Penistone & Stocksbridge

They hammered on the front door very aggressively causing both my boys seven and five to be very upset around 7.15pm. After which, they thought it was amusing to be mooning from across the road and being generally mouthy, showing the finger and being disrespectful.

We also raised a lot of money as a village for a community defibrillator which will, if the Council have their way have delayed access due to the road closure.

Do know if you are identified we will be pressing charges for trespass, public disturbance and harassment and any other charge that is presented and suitable. People shouldn’t be disturbed and feel threatened in their own homes. I’m sure in groups you’re all very brave. Sadly it appears from other posts on social media. We are far from the only target.

There has been no further engagement with us as a community or I understand with ORSAG either. I feel like we are expected to just air our views by email in response to the TRO which will no doubt also be ignored. We have already been continually ignored, misled, and not fairly represented by the people we have voted in to represent us – it’s disgusting. It is about time our voices were heard.

These QHHG WR EH ÂżOOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. AWARD-WINNING BISTRO LAUNCHES SIX-COURSE TASTING MENU DID you know that you have a triple-award winning bistro right on your doorstep? Well, you have! Bistro in the Barn has been open in Millhouse Green for almost four years and in that time, Kath and Stuart have built up a fantastic team serving delicious food to a loyal base of customers. And their efforts have not gone unnoticed. For two years running now, they have earned the coveted TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence. The most pleasing aspect of this is that it is only attainable through glowing reviews from the customers – something that the bistro has in spades. But that’s not where the plaudits end. Bistro in the Barn is also a Good Food Award winner for 2020. This prestigious accolade is awarded based on customer feedback, nominations and votes and marks exceptional levels of food quality, service and value compared to benchmarks in their category.

We still aren’t done with the awards – they also hold ‘recommended restaurant’ status from Restaurant Guru and were named ‘Sheffield’s Best Gluten Free Restaurant’ in Lux Magazine. So what is the secret to Bistro in the Barn’s success? “It’s a bit different to what other eateries in the area are doing,” says Stuart. “We try to offer value for money and good tasty food. That’s all we want. It’s nice to win the awards but it’s as important to us that we have regular customers who keep returning. We’re doing what we set out to achieve and we’re doing it consistently.” Kath is also keen to attribute part of the success to the fantastic team they have. “We have Jenny, Kelsey and Zoe to thank for their hard work – they are brilliant.” All the food is made on the premises, apart from the bread, and all meat is sourced locally. Everything on the menu is gluten free – although you probably wouldn’t know just by tasting it. Bistro in the Barn is always looking to try something new with their monthly themed nights, with Thai,

French, German and Mexican evenings proving popular recently. They’re taking this one step further next month with their first sixcourse tasting evening on Saturday December 28, starting at 7pm. “The tasting night is a step up for us and one that we are looking forward to. The themed nights always sell out and that gives us confidence to take the next step,” says Kath. The evening is £50 per person and would make a perfect Christmas gift for a loved one. It has a mouthwatering menu, including scallop & crumb, goats cheesecake and Hazlehead pheasant. A full plantbased menu is also available for the evening. In fact, Bistro in the Barn can cater for any dietary requirements, just let them know in advance. Booking is also a good idea, especially on a weekend. To book in or for more information, give Bistro in the Barn a call on 01226 765700, email info@bistrointhebarn.co.uk or visit www. bistrointhebarn.co.uk

A winter wonderland WINTER may not seem like the time to think about your garden. But take advantage of a break from the growing season to catch up on other jobs such as protecting plants from severe cold, decorating the patio for Christmas or planning a winter garden for next year. It’s also time to evaluate your garden for winter colour. There’s nothing like winter flowering plants to lift your spirits during the colder months. Shrubs such as winter flowering jasmine, cornus and snowberry offer colour at a time when you need it most. Early bulbs such as snowdrops and crocus will even pop up through a shallow covering of snow. And, just because it’s winter doesn’t mean you can’t have fresh food from the garden. Greens such as lettuce along with winter crops including kale and Swiss chard can be grown in a cloche or cold frame. Many root crops and brassicas will overwinter for a spring harvest. When decorating your home for Christmas, don’t forget about sprucing up your patio or decking area. Use ever-

green branches and berries from the garden to create wreaths, garlands or displays for doorways, winter containers and window boxes. Outdoor fairy lights can add the finishing touches.

It may be winter in the garden but there are still a few jobs for the seasoned gardener this month. December is definitely a time to catch up on some indoor gardening jobs and have a rest, but for those that are out and about here’s what the experts suggest ... It’s getting even colder - frost, rainfall and winds are increasingly common, sunshine hours are much reduced and it can be bitter with a risk of snow. You may not want to be working outside at this time of year, but luckily there’s not a lot to do. Keep an eye on winter protection, and if you have a greenhouse, make sure the heater works. It’s time to think about pruning apples and pears too. RHS Protect perennial plants from severe winter weather. Mulch your borders with 5cm of compost, leaf mould or wellrotted manure. Mulching has

many benefits – it insulates roots and tubers against frost, enriches the soil and boosts nutrient levels. It also encourages worms, which aerate the soil and will give your plants a great start next spring. Bring some colour to your garden by planting up empty containers with evergreens and winter-flowering plants such as pansies, cyclamen and winter heathers. Remove leaves from lawns, patios, borders and ponds, and clear off any winter debris too. This keeps the garden looking tidy and also healthy – rotting vegetation can harbour pests and diseases. David Domoney, TV gardener and presenter Winter prune large fruit trees to control their shape and size and increase their productivity and you can start planning next year’s crops and order the necessary seeds. Plant bareroot roses and other deciduous shrubs this month and have a clear out of the garden shed, not forgetting to organize and clean your garden tools. Gardeners’ World

Vet Ladies win at fell relays THREE teams from Penistone Footpath Runners took part in the Lee Mill Relays in Lancashire at the weekend. The event is set in the Lee Mill quarry site in Stacksteads near Rossendale. Teams consisted of four runners with each team member running a 10.7 kilometre leg. Penistone had teams in the male over-40, female over40 and mixed categories. The strong over-40 ladies team performed extremely well to claim first prize in their category. The winning team members were Becky Timms (1-0833), Julie Darigala (59-40),

Lesley Parker (1-11-52) and Sarah Walch (1-13-29). The men’s over-40 team also performed well to claim 30th overall and fourth in their category. The mixed team placed 78th overall. Elsewhere on the fells Richard and Hugh Mackie too part in round four of the Kong Mini Mountain Marathon Series at Greenfield. They place 71st out of a field of 230 and covered approximately 24 kilometres and 660 metres of ascent. Success at the weekend wasn’t limited to the fells with a good number of runners racing on the roads of Doncaster and Clowne. At the Doncaster 10k Gareth Cooke put in

a great performance to place third overall in a time of 3245. Dawn Broom also picked up third place in her age category in a time of 44-53. The fast course meant a good number of runners were rewarded with personal best times for the 10k distance, these included Jane Lawcock (1-02-45), Kieron Reed (3511) and Andrew Heppenstall who dipped under 35 minutes for the first time in 34-53. Quite a few Penistone runners opted for the longer half marathon distance at Clowne. First back for the club was Bryan Harrod in a time of 1-38-50. First lady back for Penistone was Julia Cobham in 1-44-48.

The coaching staff saw a some out of character ill discipline creep in which will be dealt with on Tuesdays training session, but overall it was extremely pleased that the young side are putting in the structure that they are working on during the week and it is hoped that they will continue to implement on this coming Sunday December 1 as the boys are at home against a strong Sandal side with an 11am kick off.

TIGERS MAKE HUGE SIGNING

Local Sport ERNEST THORPE Halifax Road, Thurgoland 0114 2882152

MOT’s £35.00 NO BOOKING REQUIRED

Mon - Fri 8.30 am - 5.00pm Sat 8.30 am - 12.00 noon SHEFFIELD Tigers have pulled off the stunning swoop for triple World Champion Nicki Pedersen. And manager Simon Stead says it’s the biggest signing in the club’s history – and in recent British Speedway history. They have also signed Kyle Howarth and 2017 league winner Josh Grajczonek is back at the club. Dynamic Dane Pedersen has been one of the most high profile riders in the last 20 years, taking the world gold medal in 2003, 07 and 08. “It’s massive news for Sheffield and massive news for British Speedway,” said Stead. “It’s a statement of intent from the owners of the club. “We aren’t going up into the Premiership just to make up the numbers and this signing underlines that. “It’s the biggest signing the club has ever made in my opinion and also the

biggest signing British Speedway has made in recent years. “Nicki has been the ultimate professional throughout the negotiation process. He has stuck to his word, we have spoken whenever he said we would speak and we have got where we wanted to be. “I would also like to thank Ashley Holloway for his assistance in bringing the two parties together.

“It’s great news for us all and I personally hope this proves to be a boost for the sport throughout Great Britain. Nicki is box office, nobody can argue with that!”

Pedersen joins fans’ favourite Kyle Howarth in a sensational start to team building with more names coming soon. His last spell in the UK was with Peterborough eight years ago.

• Automated gate entry.

• Fenced level hardstanding with lighting.

“I’m so excited I might have to get my kevlars on at press day and do some laps with him!”

• Long or shortterm arrangements.

Now Stead wants to see the ambition shown by the club matched by support on the Owlerton terraces.

• Parking available from the end of October.

“The owners cannot do more than they have,” he said. “We are back in the top league for the first time in 30 years, we are back racing on a Thursday night and we have a three-time World Champion riding for us.

CHURCH ADVANCE IN CUP, PARK STEELS GAME OFF AND WAR MEMORIAL WIN LOCAL DERBY PENISTONE Church FC progressed to the next round of the Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup thanks to a last gasp penalty. They were 2-1 winners against Hall Green United on Wednesday, with Shaun Mundy Opening the scoring for Church on 34 minutes. Clifton Firth levelled the scores four minutes into the second half but a penalty was awarded to Church in

the 90th minute and Kieran Ryan took responsibility, tucking his chance away. Their game against Garforth Town on Saturday was postponed after a pitch inspection. Stocksbridge Park Steels’ fixture suffered the same fate. In an entertaining local derby watched by a large crowd, Stannington Village’s title hopes were hit as Callum Chambers netted a late winner to give Oughtibridge

War Memorial a 3-2 victory over them. Although Stannington started the brightest, it was Oughtibridge that soon started to have the majority of the play and after 30 minutes the pressure told and the home side deservedly took the lead when Chas Tunnard tucked away a penalty after a Kurt Turner shot had been handled. Oughtibridge could have extended the lead with both Callum Simms

and Callum Chambers going close but Stannington equalised with the last kick of the first half when Joe Barker’s cross allowed Lewis Dickinson to round the keeper to score. After the break, it was Dave Hudson’s men that started brightly and they regained the lead when Brad Fletcher hit a 25 yarder into the top corner. Stannington hit back hard and only a man of the match performance by Oughtibridge keeper Kieran

Osborne kept his side ahead with a string of fine saves, but an equaliser finally came when Alex Torr crossed for Dickinson to smash home his second. Stannington looked likely to win it but pushing men forward left them open to the counter and they were caught by a quick break when great work from Callum Simms allowed Callum Chambers to score. Dean Jepson immediately had a chance to level, but once again Osbourne was up to the task and Oughtibridge held on.

Stocksbridge swimmers celebrate championship success

SWIMMERS from Stocksbridge Pentaqua Swimming Club have had another successful season at the recent county and regional competitions. Over 50% of the club’s members qualified for this year’s Yorkshire Swimming Association (YSA) Winter Competition, with many also qualifying for the Swim England North East Regional Championships. The YSA Winter Competition took place over two weekends in September and October. The first weekend saw the lower age group competing at the John Charles Centre for Sport in Leeds. Lower age group swimmers from Stocksbridge Pentaqua Swimming Club had a fantastic weekend, achieving a 65% PB (personal best rate) and six top-10 placings, including a well-deserved silver medal for Matthew B for 50m breaststroke. The upper age group competition took

place in October at Ponds Forge International Pool in Sheffield. Stocksbridge swimmers had another successful weekend with swimmers achieving a 56% PB rate and an amazing 20 top-10 placings. Logan P struck gold with a fabulous first place finish in 50m breaststroke and also earned himself a silver medal for 100m breaststroke. A bronze medal was also won by Makyle I for 50m Fly. Hot on the heels of the Yorkshire competition was the North East Regional Championships where the fastest swimmers in the North East of England compete against each other in age group and open categories. Stocksbridge Pentaqua swimmers swam fantastically earning six top-10 placings across a range of events. Congratulations to Paddy N, Sebastian A, Finley M and Logan P.
