Steels youth footballers safer thanks to new equipment YOUNG footballers at Stocksbridge Park Steels Football Club are now much safer on match days thanks to the hard work of club members and support from funding organisations. In November 2018, immediate access to a defibrillator at Forge Lane Sports Ground, Oughtibridge, helped ensure that under-15 player Daniel Lowe received prompt and appropriate treatment from two nurses who were spectators and his coach after he suffered a cardiac arrest during a game. The defibrillator used on that day had been donated by the Daniel Wilkinson Foundation, and ultimately it saved Daniel Lowe’s life. In response to this incident, club member and parent, Cheryl Dodsworth, set up an appeal to raise funds for the purchase of further devices for the Club in order to ensure

a lot of hard work and effort from many people.
This appeal was further supported by other club members including junior section coach, Richard Sutcliffe, who sourced various grants for the purchase of these devices from the National Lottery’s Awards for All programme and the J G Graves Charitable Trust.
The Club would like to thank Sam Jackson of Defibtech who has supplied the club with superb advice and support throughout the process. Also, Moya Lofthouse of Martek Lifecare has been brilliant in terms of her service and support to Katie Bullock, Richard Sutcliffe and Ian Cavanagh to enable the sourcing and placing of these defibrillators.
This has resulted in the purchase of eleven portable defibrillators for use by each of their junior squads. In addition, Park Steels have also placed two permanent devices at Deepcar St John’s Junior School and STEPS Children Centre for use by the wider community. When asked to reflect on the impact this can have, parent and supporter of the appeal, Katie Bullock, said: “To have every junior squad with a portable defibrillator as part of their first aid kit is a fantastic achievement. It is a result of

Richard Sutcliffe added: “We are grateful to both the National Lottery’s Awards for All Programme and the J G Graves Charitable Trust for helping provide the latest defibrillators, as well as the Daniel Wilkinson Foundation for providing our initial kit. Everyone involved really hopes that we never need to use a defibrillator again. However, the reassurance this gives to coaches and parents is invaluable, and ultimately it could prove to be a life-saver again.

Drink driving action on Penistone Road COMMUTERS got a reminder of the dangers of drink driving on their way to work on Monday morning, as South Yorkshire Police officers carried out a high-visibility operation on one of Sheffield’s major routes. A mobile roadblock operation was set up on Penistone Road with 53 drivers pulled over at random and asked to take a breath test. Out of 53 drivers, three tested positive for alcohol in their system but were not over the legal limit. T/PS Antony Cartlidge, leading the operation, said: “This morning we’ve been randomly stopping vehicles heading into the city to try and make people think twice about how much they’re drinking in the run up to Christmas. “It’s important that people see us actively testing people, because I think there is a tendency for the public to think they won’t get ‘found out’ if they’re over the limit. “I hope that this sends a positive message that we do take drink driving seriously, es-
pecially at this time of year, when people do overindulge. “You might think one more Prosecco or pint won’t make a difference, but there is no way of knowing how long your body takes to process alcohol. “You could still be very much over the limit the morning after the night before. “It was great to see lots of willing people providing breath tests this morning. I hope this has made them think about how they behave over the party season this year.” The majority of drivers were happy to be stopped and reassured that positive action is being taken to keep the roads of South Yorkshire safe. One driver, who blew 25mg (the legal limit being 35mg) said it was a ‘wake up’ call and will be mindful in the future. T/PS Antony Cartlidge added: “Thank you to everyone who stopped and engaged with our officers, we will continue to tackle those who do not take action to keep our communities safe.”

CHRISTMAS DAY
Rev Ian Lucraft with dancers Daniel, Katie, Hannah and Ella
A CHRISTMAS treat at Christ Church was the visit to Stocksbridge of the internationally renowned contemporary dance group called Springs Dance Company.
The dances challenged the commercialism of Christmas, asked questions about how people respond to the story of Jesus and celebrated the birth of Jesus into a world that was not looking.
They performed a four-person dance event capturing the meaning of T.S. Eliot’s Christmas poem about the hard journey that the three wise men had in the Bible story.
The dancers were really professional, showing the wide experience, and through the language of dance they brought emotion and thought to the audience. The comments of the audience reflected how powerful the dance was.
Rev Ian Lucraft, minister at Christ Church said: “We didn’t know quite what to expect, and most of us are better with words than with dance, so we were really surprised to find how much we could enter into the thoughts and feelings of the dance company. “The dancers lodged with members of the church and from it has arisen a conversation about what could happen another year, which is very exciting.”

ART HIKE STEPS IN TO HELP GALLERY PEOPLE are being urged to put their best foot forward next month for the Cupola’s Preserve & Rescue campaign.
Art Hike has offered to help with a special event on January 19 to raise cash and help blow the Christmas cobwebs away.
The Middlewood Road gallery, which has showcased the work of local, national and international artists for more than 25 years, needs to raise £40,000 to carry out urgent repairs.
“Cupola founder Karen Sherwood is facing a terrifying target,” said artist and outdoor expedition leader, Robin Widdowson, who set up Art Hike in 2007 with Adele Jackson.
Fundraising is well underway and now
“Karen has worked tirelessly supporting
hundreds of artists through showcasing and selling their work, offering advice and support where possible and advocating for the creative and cultural industries, which hasn’t been easy. “So in the spirit of ‘what goes around, comes around’ Art Hike has offered to help with a special five-and-a-half-mile, easy grade walk to

explore and discover Parkwood Springs.” The fundraising hike, limited to just 25 places, will be led by Robin and Neill Schofield, joint chair of Friends of Parkwood Springs. The route heads up through lower Pye Bank, across Rutland Road and straight into lower Parkwood Springs by the artwork ‘Boy and Bird’ by sculptor, Jason Thompson, before weaving through hidden woodlands to the heliport plateau to take a look at ‘The Spirit of Parkwood’ sculpture. “From here, with its massive range of trees, wildlife and flora, you could be mistaken for being in the Peak District,”continued Robin. “However a glimpse over the shoulder tells you that you are a stone’s throw from a major city centre. “The views over the city are incredible 180 degrees of beauty from Rotherham to the Strifes and over
the Loxley Valley, not to mention the city itself. They are quite remarkable and not to be missed.” The final part of the hike heads right along the ridge taking in many different viewpoints, before visiting sections of Wardsend Cemetery, a very old part of Sheffield’s history, and following the River Don to Kelham Island for a wellearned refreshment at one of the many real ale establishments - though this is not compulsory. The hike will take place on January 19. Hikers should gather at 10am at the large, black crucible outside Craft & Dough and be ready to set off at 10.30am. The estimated finish time is 3pm. Donations will be taken at the start of the event. Places can be booked by https://www. eventbrite.co.uk/e/ art-hike-special-cupola-fundraiser-explore-and-discoverparkwood-springstickets-84637393723

Karenza added: “Making it to the grand final will be a dream come true — fingers crossed I will be able to represent my hometown Sheffield and win the Miss Teen Great Britain Crown.

and their favourite Henderson’s dishes.
The foreword is written by general manager Matt Davies, who comments: “We’re delighted to launch the new Henderson’s Relish Strong & Northern cook book, just in time for Christmas. With new recipes that are easily achievable for home cooks, there’s something for Hendo’s fans everywhere – no matter what their tastes or dietary requirements.” The book is published by Meze Publishing, and featured contributors include England footballer Millie Bright and former world squash champion Nick Matthew – representing the city’s sporting prowess – as well as renowned artist Joe Scarborough and inaugural poet laureate Otis Mensah, leading lights of Sheffield’s thriving creative scene. Musicians, au-
thors, charity workers, metal grinders and film makers share what Sheffield means to them: a global city that is a ‘big village’ that tastes just right. The Strong & Northern cook book is a 192 page hardback and retails at £20. Local Notices On a Friday morning each week we meet at the Scout hut in Chapeltown. We are a group of people susceptible to falls and we are put through various exercises - mainly chair bound - to help our balance and indeed what to do if we fall. All this is organised by Natalie from the Osteoporosis Society and we are put through our paces by a qualified trainer, the lovely Lesley. Earlier this year I was diagnosed with throat cancer and had to leave the group to receive treatment. Through your paper I would like to thank everyone for their best wishes, their prayers, their lovely cards with such encouraging sentiments and their gifts, especially the wobbly Weebles which have pride of place at home. May I wish them a super Christmas and very joyful 2020 - you are the best! Thank you. Pete Goodwin. P.S. I have now been able to rejoin them.
MISSING MAN HAS LOCAL LINKS
“Rats caused the death of all but four of the cockatoos and parrots, by eating up all the corn that had been provided for them. During a gale the snakes and crocodiles broke out of their boxes in the hold, and invaded the forecastle, so that for five days the men could not venture into their quarters, but had to live in the cabins. These reptiles, along with the rats, kept up a continual warfare until the surviving crocodile killed the last snake, and completed the chain of vengeance by being killed during a fierce storm by cargo falling on it. “During the scrimmage among the reptiles, the monkeys took to the rigging and stuck there, despite all efforts to dislodge them. Finally they were all washed away except four which were captured. The worst passenger was a five-foot gorilla, which was imprisoned in a stout wooden box. The top of this the animal forced off, but though held by a chain he had considerable play, and getting possession of an iron bar he swept the decks.

As flood warnings become the rule rather than the exception of late, one’s thoughts therefore turn to Noah and his Ark. Though if the following article from the Thursday, January 30th 1890 edition of the Sheffield And Rotherham Independent (p8) entitled: ‘Wild animals in possession of a ship: an extraordinary voyage’ is anything to go by, then one wonders if Noah’s experiences were as seemingly untroubled as the biblical story appears to suggest. For the article in question relates that: “The overdue British barque, Margaret (Captain Sargent), from the West Coast of Africa, arrived in Boston on the 9th inst., after a remarkable voyage. Captain Sargent said that between the gales and the nature of his cargo, he had an experience he does not wish again to meet. Besides a regular cargo there were 12 snakes, 400 cockatoos and parrots, an orang-utan, some monkeys, two crocodiles, and a gorilla, which he was bringing from Africa for a museum.

AFTER the heavy rain of the last few weeks, competitive golf is finally back on the agenda at Stocksbridge Golf Club. Despite facing some very wet conditions, the club’s greenkeepers have done an excellent job in keeping as many greens in play as possible. They have also managed to keep the drainage system working effectively so that a lot of the surface water has somewhere to drain away. It has been a tough few weeks and the club’s directors noted the exemplary commitment of the staff. Stocksbridge golfers are a hardy bunch and have been eager to get back to the winter competitions. Saturday November 30 saw a Pro’s Prize competition in which the players all scored well. Mark Anthony (33) came in with a highly commendable 44 points in the stableford format. Matt Slater (29) came second with 40 points and Eric Wilkinson (9) came third with 36 points. The Dragons section competed in the fourth round of their Christmas Cracker competition on December 4. John Moss (20) won the round with 38 points. Sandy Murphy (13) was second with 36 points, beating Roy Myers (23) into third place. Roy had the same score as Sandy, but with less points on the back nine. Not only did John Moss win this round, but the points helped put him into first place with 17 points overall. Dave Broadhurst is in second place with 14 points and Sandy Murphy is in third with 12 points. Saturday December 7 saw the first round proper of the gents section’s Winter Cup. The start of the competition had been delayed by a few weeks because of the wet weather. The first round was won convincingly by Mick Siddall (16) with a score of 45 points. Playing off his full handicap allowance, Mick scored a gross 72 shots, net 56. As a result his handicap will drop by at least a couple of shots and there are a few in the club saying, “not a moment too soon! Club captain, Steven Haigh (15), came second with 40 points, pipping Glyn Stainforth (15) into third with the same score, but a better back nine total. David Peace (14) took fourth place with 39 points.

Stocksbridge Rugby donate early Christmas present
Nestle Rowntree 23 -15 Stocksbridge PROBABLY the worst first half showing of the season eventually saw Stocksbridge Rugby suffer an unexpected loss on the road in York, to unfancied Nestle Rowntree. This reverse means Stocksbridge were unable to gain any ground on Mosborough in second place in the league table, meaning that their next fixture at home to improving Stanley Rodillians now falls into the ‘must win’ category. “We were poor in all areas,” said supremo Rhys Keenan. “We have to learn to get up for each and every game and not just when it suits us. I’ve asked the lads to have a good look at themselves this week and come back with an improved attitude all round next time out.” Keenan, without the influential Aspin, Beal or Westby, also had to cope with Ryan Smith dropping out with food poisoning on the morning of the match. Bowskill was switched to partner Frith at half back, with Pat O’Leary recalled at full back and young flyer Connor Price earning a start on the wing.
It was a poor start from the visitors, who conceded possession early on, and from almost their first visit to the Stocksbridge 20-metre line, some poor defence allowed Rowntree an easy score to take the lead.
In truth, the second half was marginally better although poor discipline was beginning to take its toll on the travelling Pigs. Some decisions from the official incensed the Stocksbridge players, eventually resulting in a yellow card and a sin binning for skipper Rowett for speaking out of turn to the referee.
Stocksbridge eventually managed to build an attack, going through a few phases of possession and retaining the ball. This led to a good line break from veteran flyer Joe Jones who linked well with hard working back rower Pete Newton who barged his way over for a Weak tackling made an average attack look try, to possibly get Stocksbridge back in the much better and Rowntree gained in con- game. Neither team could really drive home any dominance Rowett’s indiscipline directly led to a further and a simple penalty for another Stocksbridge try for the home side and all thoughts of a infringement was converted before luckless come back were extinguished. Not even a losing bonus point could be achieved. tree. There followed a succession of errors, mainly from Stocksbridge, who coughed up possession almost every time they gained it, with dropped balls and loose passes gifting the home side possession and position.
The SMP Pipeworks Player of the Day award went to Sam Whitaker, who was just about the best of a bad bunch, with Newton, Price and Joe Jones amongst few others to gain any credit from the game. “Just not acceptable in a Stocksbridge shirt,” was how Director of Rugby Andy Tyers described the performance afterwards. “We’re two steps forward and one back again. We must find some consistency if we’re going to achieve our goal of promotion this season. We remain 10 points clear of fourth place, so it is all in our own hands, so maybe we can learn from our mistakes.” Stocksbridge Rugby welcome improving Stanley Rodillians to Coal Pit Lane on December 14 with kick off at 2.15pm. Tyers describes this as “a must win” clash for Stocksbridge. Stocksbridge Rugby would like to wish all their sponsors, supporters, members and players the compliments of the season. They look forward to welcoming you all at the clubhouse over the festive period.

took on the full marathon distance. The races started and finished in Guisborough.
Graihagh Turner continued her fine form picking up second place in the girls under-11 age category against some strong competition from the Sheffield and Rotherham clubs.
The races themselves were actually further than a typical half and full marathon with the half being 15 miles and the full marathon being 30 miles.
Husband and wife Sarah and Andy Walch ventured up to the North Yorkshire Moors to take part in the Roseberry Topping trail races. Andy took on the half marathon event whilst Sarah

Lawson completes Tigers team SHEFFIELD Tigers have completed their Premiership team with the signing of British ace Richard Lawson. Lawson has made a number of appearances in Tru Plant Tigers colours in recent seasons as a guest rider covering for injured riders. Club bosses regard him as a track specialist around the super-fast Owlerton bowl – he top scored for Eastbourne with 14 in their league visit last season and finished runner-up in the league individual championship with 11 in 2018. Club co-promoter Damien Bates said: “I don’t think he’s had a bad meeting at Sheffield from what I can remember. “I’d be very surprised if he didn’t add to his starting average and I think he can score some big points for us. “To have him in the middle order of a team is a big bonus for anyone and we’re over the moon

with how we’re lining-up for next season.” Lawson rode for Grand Finalists Ipswich last season and is delighted to be heading to South Yorkshire. “The Sheffield promotion have always shown a lot of ambition and I think that’s shown with everything they’ve done over these past few weeks,” he said. “Stepping up to the Premiership is a big thing for any club, especially when you haven’t been up there for a while. “But they’ve shown they’re not just going in there to make up the numbers and for me when you look at our team now, if we can keep that group together for the majority of the season then it’s definitely play-off material. Sheffield’s completed line-up is now: Nicki Pedersen, Jack Holder, Josh Grajczonek, Richard Lawson, Kyle Howarth, Todd Kurtz and Ashley Morris.
Success for Valley Runners
The first half of the East Midlands Regional League Cup encounter against Worksop. was very even with both sides probing without success and the half ended 0-0. After the break, Worksop were first to threaten but keeper Coran Wright, on her 26th birthday, pulled off a tremendous block to keep her team level. On the hour Kathryn Mudge was fouled just in the box and slammed home the penalty to break the deadlock. After that Oughtibridge ran in a further six goals through another for Mudge, a hat trick for Laura Cain and singles for Chelsea Wall and Hannah Wright.
ERNEST THORPE Halifax Road, Thurgoland 0114 2882152
VALLEY Hill were well represented at the final round of the South Yorkshire Cross Country series of races in Penistone last Sunday with both men and ladies teams taking part. Further afield Louise Harrop took part in the Hardmoor Roseberry 10k, which turned out to be nine miles, and husband Richard did the marathon, which was actually nearer 30 miles in length. VHR wish all runners everywhere a very merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year.
Church draw a blank against Handsworth
The Nick Firth Tiles Man of the Match was awarded to the lively Nathan Keightley but not even his spark could find a way through the rearguard of the visitors. Afterwards, Church manager Ian Richards said: “Today I was pleased with the performance, in windy conditions on a dry lively pitch.
“Unfortunately it just feels like two points dropped, we created enough chances to win this game and another game we just couldn’t convert them.”

We didn’t defend as well as we could but apart from that I thought we were the better team.

STEELS SCORE FOUR Stocksbridge Park Steels 4 Newcastle Town 2 STOCKSBRIDGE Park Steels returned to action with a home fixture against bottom of the table Newcastle Town following a spate of postponed games. Recent games had brought good results against teams in and around the top of the table and this game could have been a bit of a banana skin. After five minutes, things looked ominous when Newcastle took the lead. However, this sparked Steels into action and they started to play some excellent football. Josh Nodder equalised with a good header and the same player put Steels in front with a great strike from outside the box. By now, Steels were passing the ball really well and it was no surprise when Scott Ruthven increased the lead. Luke Mangham had a chance cleared off the line but that only delayed his contribution and he scored shortly after to take his tally to 12 for the season. With a 4-1 lead, it would have been easy for Steels to relax in the second half but they came out strongly. Unfortunately, they couldn’t add to the score and Newcastle pulled back another goal. But with nine goals in their last two games, Chris Hilton will be more than satisfied. The win puts Steels into the top five and five points off the top spot.
