CONSERVATIVE CANDIDATE ELECTED THE Stocksbridge and Penistone constituency elected a new MP during the General Election, with the Conservative candidate, Miriam Cates, taking the seat. Miriam, who has represented the Oughtibridge ward on Bradfield Parish Council since 2015, won by a large margin with 23,688 votes. Stocksbridge Town Councillor and Labour candidate, Francyne Johnson, got the second highest number of votes with 16,478. The Liberal Democrat candidate, Hannah Kitching totalled 5,054 votes and John Booker of the Brexit Party got 4,300. After the vote was counted, Mrs Cates said: “I’d like to thank the returning officer and his staff for their dedication and long hours of hard work throughout the night. I’d like to thank the police for ensuring a safe and secure polling day. “I’d also like to thank the other candidates for the courage and commitment they have shown in standing for election, and I very

much look forward to working with them to benefit all the people of Penistone and Stocksbridge. “A huge thank you to my own supporters and my campaign team; Debbie, David, Michael and every person who has helped - you know who you are - this is a victory for all of us. “And I want to thank my wonderful family – especially my husband Dave – and my amazing friends for your love, support, encouragement and many, many gifts of practical help during the campaign. “We have made history here in South Yorkshire tonight. For too long, there has been a sense of frustration in our area, as we have felt left behind, held back and unrepresented. “But tonight, the people of Penistone and Stocksbridge have voted for a fresh start. We have chosen a future of ambition and aspiration. A future where enterprise and creativity will be encouraged.

“We have chosen a future where opportunity can be available to all, right here in our towns and villages. And we have voted to uphold democracy. “Above all, I want to say thank you to the people of Penistone, Stocksbridge, Dodworth, Chapeltown, Oughtibridge and all our villages for putting your faith in me. “I am honoured to be able to serve you in this way and I will work tirelessly for a better future for everyone in our precious communities.” Outgoing MP, Angela Smith, stood for the Liberal Democrats in Altrincham and Sale but failed to be elected. In the neighbouring constituency of Sheffield Brightside and Hillsborough, Labour’s Gill Furniss held on to her seat by a majority of over 12,000. Labour were also re-elected in Sheffield Hallam, with Olivia Blake taking the seat.

JESUS TO SEARCH CHAPELTOWN FOR A PLACE AT THE INN

THE people of Chapeltown are in for a special treat this Christmas! The Chapeltown churches aren’t just inviting the community to join them this year – they are taking the story right out into the open air, in their community. On Wednesday December 18 at 5.30pm, a special adult nativity, complete with baby Jesus and live donkeys will be making its way through the heart of Chapeltown – calling at various pubs - the Prince of Wales, the Working Men’s Club and Wetherspoons. Wonderful though each of those pubs is, at each of them the holy family may have trouble getting in! However, they expect to finally find a welcome in the Chapeltown Memorial Garden shelter, which will be decked out to be a stable complete with bales of hay. Vicar of St. John’s church, Revd. Rick Stordy, said: “We wanted to bring the old, old story right up to date by bringing Jesus, Mary and Joseph – and all the other characters – into 21st Century Chapeltown. “There will be real donkeys, a lantern-led procession and everyone’s favourite carols. It’s absolutely free, it’ll be wonderful for all ages and there will be a warm welcome for everyone. Come and see!”

Fox Valley unveils InstaVolt electric vehicle chargers FOX Valley in Stocksbridge has become the latest location in the UK to benefit from InstaVolt’s rapid electric vehicle chargers, with six new rapid chargers available for visitors to the site. The charging stations went live this week and can be found in the Fox Valley car park close to Dominoes at the award winning north Sheffield shopping centre. Unlike many other charging stations, the InstaVolt chargers at Fox Valley are available for EV drivers to use on a pay-as-you-go basis with no subscription, card or membership needed. Drivers simply tap their contactless credit or debit card to pay. They can even use their smart watch or phone to pay if it’s set up for contactless payments.

Kayleigh Marron and Claire Reynolds from the Fox Valley management team with the new Instavolt chargers.

A spokesman for Instavolt said: “The number of electric cars on the road is increasing year-onyear and that’s only going to rise further so we’re already futureproofing our offering. Having six chargers in one location means

that even if several are in use, drivers can still access the swift and easy service InstaVolt has to offer.” InstaVolt install chargers in multiples of two to ensure drivers can enjoy the best charging experience and avoid unnecessary queues whilst waiting to charge. This forward-thinking approach to providing charging infrastructure has proved popular with drivers and landlords alike. Fox Valley is one of several retail parks owned by Dransfield Properties to pave the way for InstaVolt chargers. Medi Parry-Williams, the company’s Operations Director, said: “We’re thrilled to be at the forefront of this exciting new chapter for InstaVolt and cater even better for electric car drivers visiting our sites. Electric vehicles are an increasing sight at our retail parks and, as with all customers, we strive to deliver those services our visitors require.”

Wish all their relatives and friends a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

Some years ago when food banks first started up, I used to donate small amounts despite being on JSA myself at the time.

Email us at news@looklocal.org.uk Publication subject to space and content.

Publishing does not mean we agree with the content.

However, I can recall reading reports in the local and national press, informing that the government of the day was to make millions of pounds available on an on-going basis for the funding of food banks via local authorities. A move which, in passing, many saw as being the first step in the privatisation of the benefit “system in general. But be that as it may, as a consequence of such information, I stopped donating and haven’t done so since in the belief that adequate funding was available from government sources.

Best wishes for Christmas & the New Year As the City Councillor for the Stocksbridge & Upper Don Ward, for just over six months, I would like to wish everyone in our community a very merry Christmas and best wishes for 2020. I would also like to pay a tribute to the many wonderful people across our community who

Anyhow, as a consequence of the above observations, Our new MP for Penistone and I was therefore wondering if anyone can shed some objective, authoritative light regarding the current Stocksbridge funding arrangements (if any) for food banks and A friend has just showed me at an article in The under whose control they effectively are. It is argued that this helps food banks to increase the amount of monetary donations they receive, but sadly this completely misses the point. The point is that food banks have only sprung up since the introduction of austerity measures by the Cameron Government and surely the objective of any responsible Government should be to fix the root causes which brought food banks into existence in the first place (e.g. Universal Credit).

Footnote: Whilst on the subject of the Election and specifically the disappearance of our former MP Angela Smith, can I just take this opportunity to thank (not really) the Labour Party for precipitating our new MP’s success by ostracising our previous, more moderate, Labour MP and forcing her down a road which I don’t believe she wanted to go. Personally I think the result might have been different if she had still been our Labour candidate, especially if the information above had been forthcoming before the election. I’d also like to take the opportunity to thank (really) our former MP for her past service. As can be seen above (and this after just a few days) it’s looking as though she will be greatly missed.

This all sounds very commendable, but there is a twist in the tale; it seems that in order to avail themselves of the app’s services, food banks have to pay a registration fee of £180 from the money which has been donated to them by members of the public (me and you), though, to be fair, this fee does include a sign up fee to the charitable donations site www.justgiving.com.

However, it would appear that our new MP’s solution to food banks is not to eradicate them, but to perpetuate them by making it easier for you and I to donate to their upkeep, whilst at the same time developing a business on the back of them. Along with my colleague Haworth Ward-Drummond we specialise in helping all kinds of people gain peace mind by A of helpful, local family business providing professional advice, but with a personal touch. at We offer a FREE consultation without obligation for anybody Barnsley Road, Bridgend, Penistone, S36 7AH who would like to know more about any of the following:

CHAPELS OF REST 01226 762 481

• Making a basic Will New Road, Deepcar, S36 2RS • Setting up Lasting Powers of Attorney 0114 288 3169 • Protecting your home for future generations info@dysonfunerals.co.uk • Pre-paid Funeral Plans

www.dysonfunerals.co.uk

We know that planning for the future is a very personal matter. Not everyone is able or wants to travel to an appointment in town to sort out their affairs. We can visit you at a convenient time in the privacy and comfort of your own home to discuss your unique circumstances.

A visit and consultation is completely free and you are under no obligation to do anything. If you decide to make any arrangements you can be safe in the knowledge that all our professional services and work are fully insured and we are members of the Society of Will Writers, so all our clients are assured of the

highest standards of conduct at all times. All our clients (and their families) that we have helped in the past have been very happy with our services and tell us they have gained great peace of mind knowing that they have sorted everything out.

Jane came to see my parents to help them protect the family home. She really made us all feel at ease, especially my parents. We had no idea what we could do to protect Mum and Dad. Having set up trusts and Lasting Power of Attorney’s, Mum and Dad can get on with their lives without worrying, knowing everything is now in place. Thank you Jane! Mrs Boyle and family, Ecclesfield

A WARM COUNTRY WELCOME AT THE BRIDGE INN

THURGOLAND’S Bridge Inn is now under new management. Landlady Karen Jubb, 37, has gained a lot of experience over the years working in local pubs from the age of 14, including The Bridge Inn previously.

Karen has also previously worked at the Green Dragon, Mustard Pot and The Castle, but feels like she is finally back where she belongs at the Bridge Inn. That feeling was only compounded when on an emotional opening night, a customer remarked, “Welcome home love.

Merry Christmas Christmas Wreaths Cut Flowers Bowl Arrangements Burncross Nurseries

The Bridge Inn is open seven days a week from 12pm. Karen and her team would love to extend a warm welcome to customers new and old and what better time to pop in for a pint than over the festive period.

“Obviously with Wolves and Cradley I’ve done a lot of laps at Monmore which is tight and technical.

“I’ve also ridden for Ipswich and Plymouth and even going to Birmingham this year, that’s not the biggest of tracks either. “But Sheffield is a new type of challenge for me; I’ve only ever been there as an away rider and it’s probably one of the hardest tracks to go to as an away rider. “The home side ride there week in week out and they get really dialled in there. “So that’s what I need to do now and I’m looking forward to it.

“I know it won’t be easy because the Premiership is always a tough league to be in but there’s a lot of experience in this Sheffield team and I think that will help me a lot. “Things didn’t go to plan with Wolves for one reason or another this year; it just didn’t click but I know I’m capable of scoring well in this league. “I always give it everything I’ve got, I never give up without trying and hopefully the supporters will be able to see early on that I’ll fight for every point possible.

Students tackle motivational barriers with rugby star FORMER Great Britain and England Rugby League player Paul Broadbent visited Sport students at Barnsley College to talk about the motivation, resilience and commitment needed to become an elite athlete. Paul is the College’s athlete mentor and he came to the College as an inspirational speaker to talk to current Sport students about his career in rugby, giving an insight into coaching and working with different types of athletes at different levels. The students also took the opportunity to ask Paul questions related to dealing with pressure, professionalism and how athletes conduct themselves in the public eye.

Paul said: “Every single one of the students in this room has a success story but it’s up to them whether they unravel it or not. At this age they are still moulding themselves into the person they want to be for the rest of their lives and if I can provide a little bit of guidance and a little bit of support then they won’t work it out by making mistakes first. “My job, as a mentor, is to try and let them see how relatable I am and have them find similarities so they see a bit of them in me. I like to show them that if I can do it they can too. I breakdown those beliefs that they can’t make anything of themselves because they’ve got stuff that’s challenging them in their lives.

Rhys Stacey, a Level 3 Sports student, added: “I love hearing inspirational stories like Paul’s, it encourages me to do well in my studies at College and shows that anything is possible when you put your mind to it. Kalam Neale, Curriculum Leader for Sport, said: “It was great to have Paul in to come and talk to the students as it provided a great insight into professional sport, the lifestyle factors that comes with that and the sacrifices he’s had to make. Paul also talked about the transition from professional sport to retirement and secondary careers which I feel has provided motivation to students who are wanting to get into careers in sport.

STEELS DEFLATED AT SUTTON Sutton Coldfield 0-3 Stocksbridge Park Steels

STOCKSBRIDGE Park Steels travelled to Sutton Coldfield on the back of two excellent results but perhaps the journey should have been an indication of what was to come when the coach they were travelling in suffered a burst tyre en route which meant the team didn’t arrive until 40 minutes before kick off. The game itself was deflating with Steels 3-0 down before half time. On Sutton’s plastic pitch, individual errors were punished by some superb finishing from the Sutton forwards. A change of formation in the second half brought some improvement but Steels never really found their rhythm. Sometimes you have to write performances like this off and start again. They have proved this season that they are capable of much better and Chris Hilton will be looking for a reaction on Saturday when Steels entertain Kidsgrove who they beat 4-1 at the start of the season. Kick off is 3pm at the Look Local Stadium. It wasn’t all bad at the weekend – Steels’ reserve side beat Athersley Rec reserves to progress to the semi final stage of the Sheffield and Hallamshire Association Cup competition with goals from teenagers Brandon Whitfield and Leighton Sawyer.
