BRITISH racer Ashley Morris can’t wait to be an Owlerton regular in 2020 after joining Sheffield for their exciting Premiership push. The 25-year-old will fill one of the reserve positions as the Tru Plant Tigers return to topflight racing. And Morris is relishing a new type of challenge at the South Yorkshire venue.

Due to the continued growth and development of the Centre, we are looking for highly motivated and customer focused people to join our team to undertake the following new roles; Community Development Worker (Fixed term 2 year contract | Salary ÂŁ17,063 pa)
To act as the lead worker and named point of contact for local community development support and advice in the Stocksbridge & Upper Don Partnership area. This will include capacity building support to community groups, promoting co-operation and collaboration between existing groups to help maximise potential, use of resources and the development of volunteering opportunities and training.
Project Monitoring Officer (Salary ÂŁ18,000 pa)
To be responsible for ensuring all externally funded projects are correctly monitored, recorded and accounted for to comply with the funding guidelines agreed within each contract. This will require close liaison with both funders and those delivering the projects to ensure all progress reports, outcomes, outputs and financial records are maintained and reported as per the contractual obligations.
Business Support Apprentice (Fixed term 1 year contract | Salary ÂŁ7644 pa) To undertake administrative tasks in the general office and front of house duties on reception. This will include training in the use of IT systems operated within the office and all associated office equipment. “Obviously with Wolves and Cradley I’ve done a lot of laps at Monmore which is tight and technical.
“I’ve also ridden for Ipswich and Plymouth and even going to Birmingham this year, that’s not the biggest of tracks either. “But Sheffield is a new type of challenge for me; I’ve only ever been there as an away rider and it’s probably one of the hardest tracks to go to as an away rider. “The home side ride there week in week out and they get really dialled in there. “So that’s what I need to do now and I’m looking forward to it.
“I know it won’t be easy because the Premiership is always a tough league to be in but there’s a lot of experience in this Sheffield team and I think that will help me a lot. “Things didn’t go to plan with Wolves for one reason or another this year; it just didn’t click but I know I’m capable of scoring well in this league. “I always give it everything I’ve got, I never give up without trying and hopefully the supporters will be able to see early on that I’ll fight for every point possible.�
Students tackle motivational barriers with rugby star FORMER Great Britain and England Rugby League player Paul Broadbent visited Sport students at Barnsley College to talk about the motivation, resilience and commitment needed to become an elite athlete. Paul is the College’s athlete mentor and he came to the College as an inspirational speaker to talk to current Sport students about his career in rugby, giving an insight into coaching and working with different types of athletes at different levels. The students also took the opportunity to ask Paul questions related to dealing with pressure, professionalism and how athletes conduct themselves in the public eye.
Paul said: “Every single one of the students in this room has a success story but it’s up to them whether they unravel it or not. At this age they are still moulding themselves into the person they want to be for the rest of their lives and if I can provide a little bit of guidance and a little bit of support then they won’t work it out by making mistakes first. “My job, as a mentor, is to try and let them see how relatable I am and have them find similarities so they see a bit of them in me. I like to show them that if I can do it they can too. I breakdown those beliefs that they can’t make anything of themselves because they’ve got stuff that’s challenging them in their lives.�
Rhys Stacey, a Level 3 Sports student, added: “I love hearing inspirational stories like Paul’s, it encourages me to do well in my studies at College and shows that anything is possible when you put your mind to it.� Kalam Neale, Curriculum Leader for Sport, said: “It was great to have Paul in to come and talk to the students as it provided a great insight into professional sport, the lifestyle factors that comes with that and the sacrifices he’s had to make. Paul also talked about the transition from professional sport to retirement and secondary careers which I feel has provided motivation to students who are wanting to get into careers in sport.�
