MP RESPONDS TO FOODBANK APP CLAIMS NEW MP for Penistone and Stocksbridge, Miriam Cates, has spoken out against misleading claims she was making a profit from foodbanks.

Earlier this month, people in Penistone and Stocksbridge elected Mrs Cates as their first-ever Conservative MP. Now, the new MP wants to answer the false suggestions made against her and her husband, Dave. “My husband and I own a small business that we set up from scratch,” the MP said. “Six years ago, after seeing the challenges of our local S6 Foodbank, we developed an app to show supporters which food items are running low and remind people to donate. Creating the app was costly but we wanted to help.”

Miriam Cates MP met with Chancellor Sajid Javid in Downing Street to discuss plans to invest in infrastructure in the north

The S6 Foodbank saw an increase in donations as a result of the app so the Cates decided to offer it to other foodbanks.

“This app would have cost thousands of pounds to develop commercially and as a small business, we could not afford to continue to update and support it for free,” Mrs Cates said. “So we had to make a small charge to cover the set up and training costs each time a new foodbank signed up.

“This app has cost us far more to develop than we will ever recoup. To say we have ‘profited from foodbanks’ is not just misleading – it’s a lie. We created the app to help people in crisis but sadly those who spread these stories seem to have no interest in the truth. “Like all of us, I desperately want food poverty to end. That’s why I’ll be supporting increases in the National Living Wage and doing everything I can to reduce living costs and improve access to secure jobs locally.”

app has been an invaluable resource for us at the S6 Foodbank and others that I know. Miriam and Dave Cates have been incredibly generous and supportive of our work.” Mrs Cates says she has also received widespread support since her election. “I’ve always tried to help people in my community as a volunteer, a Parish Councillor and now an MP,” she said.

“Already in my first week in Parliament I’ve voted to get Brexit done on January 31st, fulfilling my first promise to those who voted for me. I’m excited about getting on with my other commitments, to improve our infrastructure and bring more high-skilled jobs to our area. My constituents have a right to know that I’m someone they can trust to represent them.”

Chris Hardy, S6 Foodbank manager said: “The Foodbank

SYCF appeal to support victims of South Yorkshire floods tops £500,000 as donors show Christmas spirit THE South Yorkshire charity’s emergency appeal to help victims of the devastating South Yorkshire floods has surged past the £500,000 mark, offering aid to hundreds of residents including those who will be forced to spend Christmas away from home. Launched by South Yorkshire’s Community Foundation (SYCF), the relief appeal has brought donations from organisations and individuals across the region, across the UK and even from overseas in a “truly extraordinary” response. “I survived Storm Sandy in New Jersey US – I wish you well in the recovery of your homes and community,” says one donor, giving £50. Since being launched following the widespread flooding in South Yorkshire, especially in the Doncaster area, on November 7, South Yorkshire’s Community Foundation’s Emergency Flood Disaster Relief Appeal has so far generated more than £526,000. raises with the South Yorkshire Disaster Relief Appeal the more we will be able to do to help local people facing huge expense to make their homes habitable again.”

Ruth Willis, chief executive of South Yorkshire’s Community Foundation, which was set up to support community groups and to improve the lives of their communities, described the response to the relief appeal as “truly extraordinary”.

Thousands have been raised by the BBC Radio Sheffield Flood Relief Appeal Concert in Doncaster this month – an evening of music and comedy featuring the likes of Doncaster-based band Bang Bang Romeo, Sheffieldbased ukulele group The Everly Pregnant Brothers and stand-up comedians Justin Moorhouse and Tom Wrigglesworth.

She said: “The flooding that devastated parts of South Yorkshire in November continues to cause huge disruption to local communities. Whilst thousands of people continue to clean up their homes, streets and communities, they now face the long-term impact of the flooding. Many people are in a situation where repairs to their homes will take months if not longer and we know many of those are unable to live in their homes whilst this is being done. “The response in the aftermath of the flooding from across the UK was incredible but now we are calling for the continued support from anyone that can help all those affected. The more SYCF

Significant donations have come from charitable trusts and religious organisations from across the UK as well as numerous anonymous contributions. Pupils at a primary school in Bradford said they “wanted to give their money to help families who have been affected by the floods at Christmas”, sending £20, a church in Canvey Island, Essex, donated £70, “hoping you can enjoy Christmas despite your circumstances and wishing you a better New Year”, and a £30 donation was “instead of granddaughters Christmas present”.

BLADES STARS MAKE PACES VISIT

Players including Chris Basham, Jack O’Connell, John Lundstram and Marcus De-

whurst were among those who called in at High Green for a brilliant festive celebration.

In return, the children performed some Christmas songs and presented Jack with an award for playing 150 games for the Blades.

Harry Gration was also there with the BBC Look North cameras for a special feature on the club’s support for Paces.

Dave McCarthy, United’s operations director said: “This is a special day in the calendar that

players, management and staff look forward to each year. “To be able to visit these places on the same day and spread a little happiness to patients, their families, volunteers and staff means a great deal to everyone at the club.”

Wharncliffe Side Retirees meet for Christmas Party

THE Wharncliffe Side Retirees Christmas Party is an event that has been run in Wharncliffe Side in December since 1947.

In 2016, the previous team running the party retired and have been replaced with local ladies Claire Sutcliffe, Jill Nichols, Rebecca Peaker, Vicki Powell and Denise Walker. They prepare extensively throughout the year. This preparation includes many late-night meetings, visiting local businesses for donations, advertising, and constant chats on Facebook as the date approaches. To raise funds for the main event a coffee morning is held in the Wharncliffe Side chapel in November and has proved very popular with locals. This year the party took place from 2om to 6pm on Saturday December 7. The party is set up to be as user-friendly as possible, and completely free to all attendees who invariably go home with biscuit tins and raffle prizes aplenty. Every accommodation is made for wheelchair-users and those with other health problems such as dementia. Donations of food, drink, table decorations and raffle prizes are provided by many local businesses such as Morrisons, A Piece of Cake, The Plough Bradfield, Blue Ball Wharncliffe Side, Co-op Stocksbridge, MRT- online, Caroline Frost, Kelly’s Cakes and Cupcakes, Flawless, Yvonnes Hairdressers Stocksbridge which greatly enhance the experience.

No one can doubt that the retirees that attend the party, normally at least 50 very much enjoy it. The thank you card given to the organisers is filled with grateful messages of As it is run in the local primary school hall; thanks. one of the few buildings in the village large The setting up and clearing away is always a enough, one of the favourite entertainments flurry of activity, the women organising are is carol singing from local schoolchildren, fol- always helped by their own children who lowed after the meal by a festive performance hand out tickets, call out raffle prizes and from Oughtibridge Brass Band. would hardly be able to tell how much had happened in there. However, there is only one regret on the part of the organisers, and that is that so many other local retirees would love to attend this party, but they simply don’t know about it or feel that they would not be able to travel there unassisted. Despite serving over 50 attendees, the hall would certainly be able to fit several more next year.

As already emphasised, this wonderful event, enhancing the lives of many retirees in the Wharncliffe Side area during the festive period, would be unable to run without the generosity of the local school, individuals and businesses. If you would like to offer help or donations for next year’s party, to be held on Saturday December 5, would like to attend yourself or know someone who would, please call Jill Nichols at 0114 2862292 or email her at jillnichols156@gmail.com.

LOCAL BIKERS RAISE MONEY FOR VITAL RESCUE TEAM A CHARITY Christmas bike ride organised by Valley Mountain Bike in aid of Edale Moutain Rescue Team raised £450 over the festive period. Edale MRT runs entirely from charitable donations, and it is the generosity of the general public which allows them to continue the important work they do. It costs around £80,000 per year to keep the team operational. The team helped out with the floods, doing jobs that paid services used to do but now can’t due to low resources. The team are all volunteers and they offer invaluable support to people enjoying outdoor sports, as well as looking for people who have disappeared. Sadly, they are also sometimes called in to find people who have committed suicide. They do all of this in their own time without financial reward.

New dementia support plans SHEFFIELD’S vision is to make sure people with dementia are supported to live life to their full potential. A new plan to make this vision a reality was discussed at Sheffield City Council’s Cabinet on December 18. It highlights how there is city-wide agreement that improving the care and support for people of all ages living with or caring for those living with dementia is of vital importance. Around 7,000 people aged 65 and above, 1% of the city’s population, currently live with dementia and it’s estimated that by 2035 that figure could rise to over 9,000 for that age group. Key priorities for the plan include that: • People living with dementia will be able to live in a dementia friendly community, where people with dementia are understood, respected and supported - meaning that they can live well at home for as long as possible. • It will be easier to know where to go to seek information, advice, and help.

• Because dementia is not an inevitable part of ageing, there will be a focus on preventing or delaying the onset of dementia by raising awareness of the importance of maintaining a healthier lifestyle, across all ages. Public, voluntary, community and private sector organisations here have committed to work together to do this. Consultation with those living with dementia, their carers and family, as well as professionals involved in their care has resulted in a set of 13 commitments for how dementia care is delivered in the city. George Lindars-Hammond, Cabinet Member for Health and Social care at Sheffield City Council said: “Our ongoing pledge is to ensure that that the voices of people living with dementia and caring for those living with dementia are heard and used to develop the action plans that will drive the delivery of the Dementia Strategy once it is agreed.

success of the work will be partners, communities and groups working together to improve services and pooling budgets to make the best use of resources.” Dr Steve Thomas, GP and Clinical Director for Mental Health, Learning Disabilities and Dementia at NHS Sheffield Clinical Commissioning Group said, “We are proud to have worked together with our partners in Sheffield to develop a set of shared commitments to make sure people with dementia and their families are supported to live to their full potential. “By helping Sheffield become a ‘dementia friendly’ city it will mean people with dementia are more understood and supported and can live well with dementia, helping them remain independent for longer.” The Cabinet Report is here at www.democracy.sheffield.gov.uk https://bit. ly/2RZDhqw

Music tourism adds £92 million to the Sheffield City Region’s economy NEW figures show that music tourism adds more than £92 million to the Sheffield City Region economy each year. This is just one of the findings in a UK Music report on the region’s music sector, launched on December 19, by the Mayor of the Sheffield City Region, Dan Jarvis and Tom Kiehl, UK Music Deputy Chief Executive. Dan Jarvis, Mayor of the Sheffield City Region, said: “The region has a wealth of musical talent from all genres, from rock and pop through to opera, classical and folk. I want us to nurture this talent and create an environment where everyone, from primary aged school children right up to established musicians, can foster their passion for music and realise their ambitions. “I know that there is more that we can do to promote our region’s musical offer nationally and internationally. This new report from UK Music now enables us to focus on the areas in which we can have the greatest impact. “My Music Board, chaired by Laura Bennett, will now work with UK Music and industry experts from across our region to take forward the recommendations detailed in the report. They will work together to develop our region’s musical potential on the national stage, grow our cultural economy and help new talent to shine.” The Sheffield City Region is home to many world-famous bands and artists, festivals and iconic music venues. The region is also leading

the way with production and technology-based businesses.

talent and grow our region’s cultural economy.

Last year, following the creation of the Sheffield City Region Music Board, UK Music were asked to produce an independent report into the music sector across the region.

“This report will help to establish where we are now, inform our conversations, and provide valuable evidence for planning the work that we do next. We now look forward to working together to deliver real cultural change for the region.”

The aim of the report was to understand the music industry as it is now and identify areas in which the region can drive forward change and grow the music sector.

The report detailed five recommendations that the music board could take forward. These are:

UK Music CEO, Michael Dugher said: “Dan Jarvis knows just how important music is in the economy and cultural life of the Sheffield City Region and how it could play an even bigger role.

* Opportunities for emerging talent – ensuring that all young people, regardless of their background, should have access to music in education and should be able to pursue a career in music.

“This important UK Music report is about how we build on the region’s fantastic musical heritage and the £92 million it already generates to grow the local economy, attract investment and create more jobs.

* Protecting grassroots music venues - offering business rate relief and help with licencing to venues as well as improving accessibility at venues for deaf and disabled audiences and performers.

“We are delighted to have worked with Dan to establish the new Sheffield City Region Music Board and look forward to continuing to work with its chair Laura Bennett to grow the music scene and music tourism, protect venues and boost opportunities for young people in every community.”

* Developing music businesses – leverage powers to support the growth of the music businesses which in turn will increase employment and productivity.

Laura Bennett, Chair of the Sheffield City Region Music Board, said: “We’re delighted to receive the UK Music report for the region. The Music Board has been exploring how we can work together to champion music makers, music lovers and the music industry to support

* Integrating Transport – creating a transport system that is fit for purpose and that supports the night time economy. * Reaching out to every corner of the region – Mapping all music activity across the region recognising that different parts of the region have different needs and challenges. site and ban certain activities taking place in the future. Under planning rules, activities such as clay pigeon shooting and off-road motorcycling can take place for up to 28 days a year without the need for planning permission. With the new notice now confirmed, the land can no longer be used for activities like these without planning permission being obtained. Cllr Tim Cheetham, Cabinet Spokesperson for Place (Regeneration and Culture), said: “We have many beautiful places in our borough which are key to our biodiversity, West Wood being one of these.

“It is important that we protect, wherever possible, what is special about our borough and our wildlife sites in particular. “The decision was made to issue an Article 4 Direction to prevent further harm to the woodland and protect residents in surrounding areas. Once activity has stopped, natural regeneration will be able to start and felled trees will need to be replaced. “The landowner has been fully cooperative working with us to meet current regulations, and we look forward to a similar response next year.”

NEW 25-YEAR LEASE FOR PARAMOUNT STAFF at a popular cinema in Penistone are celebrating after signing a new lease which secures its future for another 25 years. The new lease takes the cinema up to 2044 and gives us another 25 years. Town Clerk, Keith Coulton, signed the lease on Thursday December 19. The Paramount, on Shrewsbury Road, is a community entertainment centre enjoyed by local residents that shows new releases and live theatre. The extended lease will secure the historic building’s future and allow the town council to apply for external funding and investments, helping them to continue running their current projects and services. The 348 seat venue celebrated its 100th year in 2014 and is

host to many commercial and community projects. As a popular meeting place, the venue helps tackle loneliness, by giving residents an accessible place to go and talk. Cllr Roy Miller, Cabinet Spokesperson for Place, said: “The extended lease on Penistone Paramount shows our commitment to local venues that provide entertainment and support for our residents. “This fantastic building is at the heart of the Penistone community and will continue to be so for the next 25 years. I urge anyone living in the area to visit the Paramount and support the fantastic work they are doing to help keep Barnsley a vibrant and welcoming place.”

CHURCH SIGN OFF ON 2019 IN STYLE

PENISTONE Church signed off on 2019 in style with a 4-0 win over Knaresborough Town in front of a bumper home crowd.

An incredible 354 watched the game on Saturday as Kieran Ryan’s first half brace helped Church to a comfortable victory. It was Ryan who opened the scoring with just seven minutes on the clock and on 10 minutes, Nathan Keightley made it 2-0. Ryan grabbed his second on 36 minutes and a minute later, Will Lenehan scored an own goal to complete the scoring.

“Statistically we’ve been the best team in 2019 like we were statistically in 2018, the level of consistency by the players is exceptional, their form, the standard that they set themselves have been first class all year. “That was our 38th league game in the calendar year, we’ve only lost five of those games

and we’ve won 26. It’s a great return for those players who have been with us for the whole year, a great return by those players who have joined us and have understood what is expected of them to play for our football club and be in our changing room so I’m very proud of everybody connected and to get an attendance of over 350 over Christmas is credit to the community to get behind the club. The people in the clubhouse are filling it to the rafters, it’s a great atmosphere, its people from Penistone really getting behind this football club and it’s great to see.

Football fans urged to take a minute for their mental health

Church manager Ian Richards said: “A brilliant way to sign off the year! I think today’s performance, today’s attendance and today’s atmosphere in the clubhouse just replicates how good a year it’s been for the football club.

NHS Sheffield Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) is supporting the national Heads Up campaign which will see all Emirates FA Cup third round ties delayed by one minute to encourage fans to ‘Take A Minute’ to think about looking after their mental health. The move will see all 32 ties from January 3 to 6, excluding replays, kick off one minute later than their traditionally scheduled broadcast and non-broadcast timeslots, for example 3.01pm, 12.16pm and 7.46pm. It is hoped that the initiative will raise awareness of the importance of looking after our mental health, with 60 seconds representing just the first step in the journey to improved wellbeing. During the minute delay, fans will be encouraged to consider the positive impact 60 seconds can have on their own wellbeing or in supporting a friend or family member. In Sheffield, Sheffield United are at home to Fylde, kicking off at 3.01 and Sheffield Wednesday are away to Brighton and Hove Albion, also kicking off at 3.01. Dr Steve Thomas, Sheffield GP and Clinical Director for Mental Health, Learning Disabilities and Dementia at

NHS Sheffield Clinical Commissioning Group said, “By asking football fans to take a minute to think about looking after their mental health, I hope it will encourage more people, particularly men, to think how they can improve their mental health and to recognise that mental health is just as important as physical health. “We can all take simple actions to look after our mental health, such as talking to someone we trust about our feelings, seeing friends or doing something we enjoy, taking a break, practicing mindfulness, eating well and not drinking too much. “However if you think you need help and support, you don’t have to struggle with difficult feelings alone, there are services available right now in Sheffield if you need them. The first point of contact for anybody who is concerned about their mental health should be their own GP. Your GP can refer you to the correct service if you need support. “The Sheffield Mental Health Guide https://www.sheffieldmentalhealth.co.uk/ is also an excellent resource for anyone experiencing mental health difficulties, or for voluntary/paid workers or car-

ers, or anyone else wanting information about mental health services in Sheffield. If you do need to talk to someone urgently support is available from the Sheffield Helpline on 0808 801 0440 for anyone in Sheffield affected by mental health issues. It is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Calls from landlines are free but if you call from a mobile your provider may charge you and the call might appear on your bill. In the event of an emergency situation or if you or someone else is in immediate risk of serious harm or injury contact Emergency Services by dialling 999 and state which service you require. The Accident & Emergency department at the Northern General Hospital is also open 24 hours a day every day of the year. If you are suicidal and want to talk in confidence The Samaritans can be contacted on 116 123 or you can email jo@ samaritans.org.

BOXING DAY MISERY FOR STEELS Frickley Athletic 4-1 Stocksbridge PS

STOCKSBRIDGE Park Steels got an early case of the post Christmas blues as they slumped to a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Frickley. The game started brightly for Stocksbridge winning an early free kick just outside the Frickley area. Unfortunately, Luke Manghan’s strike went straight into the wall. On 13 minutes Steels went behind after a defensive mix-up following a poor clearance by Robert Ludlum. This left an easy chance for Jonathon Margetts, Frickley’s inform striker, and he fired past Carney. Steels bounced back quickly though; five minutes later Lewis Whitham’s free kick went straight past all the defenders and into the corner of the net to level the scores. Whitham threatened again on 26 minutes, this time cutting in from the left but shooting straight into the hands of the goalkeeper Thomas Jackson.

Moments later, Whitham made a nuisance of himself yet again, this time from the right hand side. But his left-footed shot whistled just past Jackson’s near side post. Just before half-time Jacob Hazell had a flashing header from a corner and much to the delight of the Steels defence it rebounded off the post to safety. On the stroke of half time, Frickley’s Thomas Davey put in a cross which was only gathered by Jacob Carney on the second attempt - unfortunately the ball had been deemed to cross the line and the home side went into the break to 2-1 up. The second half got worse for the Steels with Frickley taking control, and just after the break Jacob Carney saved well from the impressive Margetts who should have increased the home side’s lead. But it was Margetts on 69 minutes who did well down the Steels left, he cut inside and fired a shot

curling past Carney to make it 3-1. Steels’ miserable afternoon was completed on 80 minutes

after Margetts’ low cross was tapped in by Bradley Wells at the far post.

An awful Stocksbridge performance in the second half, they must now try and pick themselves up for a New Year’s Day

Christmas cheer for triumphant Piggies Stocksbridge Rugby 43-14 Stanley Rodillians STOCKSBRIDGE Rugby rounded of their league program for the year with a resounding 43-14 victory over form team Stanley Rodilians from Wakefield at the weekend. This bonus point, five-try mauling of the visitors consolidates third position in the league ladder with a game in hand on Mosborough Rugby just above them. With supremo Keenan absent due to personal reasons, it was left to his deputy Tyers to prepare the squad. In came Jason Booth to bolster the front row, whilst a strong bench had Andy Beal and young flyer Connor Price eager for game time. Playing up the slope in the first half, Stocksbridge initially defended well as the visitors saw most of the ball. However a crack appeared in the blue line and Rods drew first blood with a converted try after five minutes. The remaining 35 minutes of the first half were played almost exclusively in the visitors’ 20 metre zone, with attack after attack being repelled with some stout ND committed tackling. Stocksbridge piled on the pressure but became their own worst enemies as a combination of dropped balls and bad decisions added to the frustration. Bowskill slotted a simple penalty to get the home side on the

scoreboard and with the last play of the half, a cheeky tap penalty by Frith lead to Sam Whitaker plunging over the line from close range to celebrate his birthday with a much needed try; Bowskill tagging on the extras for good measure. The efforts of the first half seemed to drain the visitors for the second half and Stocksbridge produced a feast of running rugby to entertain the sizable Coal Pit Lane crowd. Young Jack Martin scored his first try in senior rugby after some good interplay between the forwards, then Stocksbridge were awarded a penalty try as the scrum rumbled towards the try line, when a stray visiting boot kicked the ball away, earning the perpetrator a yellow card for his actions. This was followed moments later by further yellow card for the visitors for illegal use of the knee in a ruck, Fletcher the innocent victim in this incident. Stocksbridge capitalised on their numbers superiority and hooker Mikey Hartley was inches away from a score when chasing a grubber kick through the line, his swan like dive was worth the entrance fee alone! More Stocksbridge pressure followed and hard working flanker Pete Newton was next on the scoresheet, finishing off an-

other forwards move in some style and again Bowskill converted. Almost immediately, and well against the run of play, the Stocksbridge midfield missed their tackles and allowed Rods another consolation score in the process. Next on the scoresheet was the impressive Adam Middlehurst, latching on to a Jack Spencer pass to race away and outpace the beleaguered defence, Bowskill again on target with the conversion. The final score of the game was a beauty, Bowskill neatly chipping the defence for centre Pat O’Leary to gather and crash over the line. Despite some impressive performances from Frith, the consistent Whitaker, the bustling Pete Newton and the nippy Middlehurst, the Oughtibridge Kitchens Man of the Match award went to Jordan Fletcher for a huge all round performance, finally fulfilling his obvious potential. Director of rugby, Andy Tyers, said: “It was a good performance and a massive improvement on our last efforts. These are the standards the boys are setting and I expect this to continue into 2020.” Stocksbridge will now prepare for a tough opener for 2020 with a mouth watering away trip to rivals Mosborough Rugby, who will be gunning for revenge for an earlier defeat at Coal Pit Lane.

Sam Shaw at the Ambles Revenge. Photo by Steve Frith. THE Ambles Revenge has become the must do race for many runners locally and further afield. Vests from Penistone, Barnsley Harriers and Kingstone were in abundance, and were joined by people from, Oldham, Hull, Lincoln and Derbyshire. Conveniently placed between Christmas and New Year, it had a record entry of 349. Starting on the Trans Pennine trail in Oxspring it runs up to Green Moor and down to the Tin Mill near Deepcar and back. The conditions were perfect with temperatures around 10 degrees and

the sun shining. Very muddy, extremely hilly it is a tough eight miles which most of the runners thoroughly enjoy.

There were Penistone age group wins for Becky Timms (over-40 lady), Bill Phillips (over-70 man) and Barbara Haigh (over-70 lady).

Thanks this year go to sponsor Liz Cator of the House of Beauty in Barnsley who gave each entrant a £10 voucher and also donated a free massage to all category winners.

Thanks also go to Woodhead Mountain Rescue who provided first aid cover and to over 40 marshals and helpers which made the race a huge success.

The men’s race was won by Scott Hinchcliffe of Penistone in a time of 50.35. So dominant was Scott that he was over three minutes ahead of second place. The ladies race was also won by a Penistone runner, Sam Shaw in 1.02.01.

On the fells a number of Penistone runners competed in the Two Turtle Doves fell race in Totley on Boxing Day. Julie Darigala was second lady overall and Lesley Parker won the ladies over-40 age category.
