REACTION TO LIBERTY JOB CUTS LOCAL steelworkers were dealt a huge blow last week as it was announced that around 250 jobs will be lost at the Stocksbridge plant of Liberty Steel. The move follows a review of its UK business in response to what Liberty describes as challenging market conditions and a lingering reduction in demand for UK steel products. Cornelius Louwrens, chief executive at Liberty Steel UK, said: “Liberty has taken enormous strides in improving the performance of the steel mills it has acquired over the last six years. We’ve re-started mothballed plants and demonstrated a commitment to invest in the UK. “Unfortunately, the steel industry in the UK is facing challenging conditions and we have made the difficult decision that there is a need to reduce the workforce at a handful of locations, in order to make them sustainable for the long-term.

“It has always been our intention, and always will be, to avoid compulsory redundancies. Therefore the creation of the GFG Workforce Solutions now offers those impacted the security of ongoing employment as an alternative.” Ross Murdoch, national officer for steelworker union GMB, added: “Our steelworkers deserve better than this.

“The government urgently needs to intervene and ensure steel companies in the UK receive the backing they have long called for on energy costs and business rates. “GMB will of course engage with the company to mitigate any losses for our members and will continue to campaign with our sister steel trade unions to bring about the support and investment required.” Penistone and Stocksbridge MP, Miriam Cates said: “This is devastating news for steelworkers, their families and our whole community and I will do everything I can

to support all those who have been affected by this decision. I have spoken to Liberty Steel this morning and I hope to visit the Stocksbridge site as soon as possible.

“This is a difficult time for the UK steel industry and Liberty have made clear that global market conditions have been the major factor in this decision. I have today written to the Business Minister, Nadhim Zahawi to secure a meeting with him next week to discuss what support the government can offer to the steel industry and its workers going forward. I have also spoken to Mayor Dan Jarvis and I know that the Sheffield City Region team are standing by to help in any way they can. “It is vital that we do everything we can to support those who are losing their jobs, including looking at what new industries and training opportunities we can bring to the area and I will be working closely with the government on this in the coming months. But today my thoughts are with the 250 mem-

bers of our community who have received such terrible news.” Councillor Mazher Iqbal, Cabinet Member for Business and Investment at Sheffield City Council, said: “It is devastating news to hear of the job losses at Liberty Steel, which could affect many people in Sheffield. “We know that falling levels of demand and the impact of Brexit have made for very challenging trading conditions but we remain optimistic that, given the skills of the retained workforce and previous investment facilities, there remains a viable and vitally important speciality steels business in Stocksbridge. “The council is working alongside Liberty Steel to develop re-training and redeployment opportunities with the aim of minimising the number of compulsory redundancies needed. It’s vital the Government act now to provide all necessary support to the business and of course, the individuals concerned.”

Police release shocking footage of head-on motorbike crash SOUTH Yorkshire Police have this week released footage of a 70mph head-on crash which left a motorcyclist with life changing injuries. On April 28 last year, the 35year-old was riding along Mortimer Road near Stocksbridge when he was hit by a driver travelling 70mph on the wrong side of the road. The horrifying footage first shows the car travelling around a blind left-hand bend. Due to the driver’s excessive speed, it veers on to the wrong side of the road. As the Subaru driver fails to regain control, the video shows the motorcyclist brake, before the two collide head-on. The motorcyclist is then catapulted through the air. The experienced rider suffered a broken back, a broken sternum and a broken wrist in the crash. His Suzuki K7 sports bike was completely destroyed on impact. The victim, from Barnsley, has since credited the protec-

tive gear he was wearing at the time with saving his life. Roads policing constable, PC Phil Carson explains: “In an ideal world, everyone would drive with care 100% of the time, but sadly this isn’t the case. “The offending driver had no previous driving points or convictions, but on this occasion he demonstrated an exceptional lack of judgement. Thankfully, the motorcyclist was wearing a full leather, air bag suit which activated and inflated as he was propelled off his bike. Without it, in a collision at this speed, he would most likely have died.” The 41-year-old driver of the Subaru, Florian Pratt, was jailed for 16 months yesterday at Sheffield Crown Court. Addressing Pratt as he passed the sentence, Judge David Dixon said: “Anyone in control of a high-powered sports type car needs to be aware of the vehicle’s capability and their own capability.

“You failed to take any account of the bend that led to this incident. The message must go out loud and clear. If you drive any vehicle you must drive with care.” Addressing his reason for releasing the footage today, PC Carson goes on: “We often see motorcycle riders wearing shorts and trainers, and they think it’s OK because they have a helmet on – it’s not. You might be travelling in a safe manner, but that doesn’t mean everyone else is. “Please make sure that you’re wearing the right kit, it might be expensive but without it, your life could be at risk.” Pratt, of Kilnwood Close, Nottingham admitted to causing serious injury by dangerous driving and was also handed a three year driving ban. The footage can be viewed on the South Yorkshire Police Facebook page.

SHEFFIELD City Council is set to approve its Housing Revenue Account (HRA) Business Plan for 2020/2021, which includes proposals to invest £500 million over the next five years into building new homes and improving existing council housing. The HRA Business Plan highlights the council’s aim to address the number of new affordable homes available and to provide more choice for those trying to move in to council housing, as well as improving thousands of existing council properties, continuing tower block safety works and making changes to surrounding areas and the environment of council properties and estates. Last year the council committed to providing 1,600 new council homes by 2023/24 and this year this is being extended by an additional 1,500, taking the total to 3,100 new council homes over the next 10 years. The additional council homes will include a wider range of housing types including new Older Persons Independent Living with Care, new homes for younger people and families as well as accommodation for people with specific needs including learning disabilities and other supported housing.

Fond memories of Catherine were expressed by those present and Sheree Piggott, who used to work at the school, but now lives in New

However, the main priority and biggest investment will be in the city’s existing council housing stock, to carry out maintenance and improvements that will make sure homes remain safe, modern and warm. This will include updating kitchens, bathrooms, windows, doors, roofs and improving communal areas.

The council also plans to continue improving services for tenants and leaseholders, particularly the most vulnerable tenants such as elderly or disabled people, those who need support to live independently and those who are managing complex health or mental health issues. Part of this plan is to improve the local environments and surrounding areas, ensuring that neighbourhoods are safe and well managed. Other key investment priorities for 2020/21 include the ongoing fire safety works, including sprinklers and fire stopping works on tower blocks, and continuing to invest in roofing replacement and electrical upgrades. This investment in new homes and improvements to existing homes and services is funded through tenant rents and borrowing. For the last four years rents have been reduced by 1% per year in line with Government rent policy. As a result Sheffield lost 13% of its projected rental income which has had a significant impact on the business plan. The Government is now allowing Council’s to increase rents which will mean an average increase of 2.7% or £1.98 per week for Sheffield tenants if approved by Councillors. There will be no increase in service charges for tenants in sheltered or furnished accommodation and no increase in charges for community heating.

AS part of the Heritage Funded Sheffield Lakeland partnership the woodland team at Sheffield City Council are tackling the legacy of unproductive conifer plantations by clear felling and replanting with species of tree that will result in a richer and more resilient woodland landscape. Working with Yorkshire Water and Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust, Sheffield Council is coordinating a four year programme of forestry work to remove or modify conifer plantations which are uneconomic, replanting them with a range of broadleaf tree species which will benefit wildlife. The first phase of the restoration works is underway in the Morehall area of the Ewden Valley where planting and fencing is being carried out in the coming months. Phase two involves forestry operations around the Agden and Dale Dike area above Bradfield, including Dow House Plantation, Eleven Acre Plantation and Agden House Wood. Work is scheduled to start in the next two weeks. Due to the sensitivities of Agden House Wood a technique called sky-lining will be in operation which al-

lows the trees to be taken out on overhead wires with less damage to the woodland floor. Restoration will take place the following winter. Dave Aspinall, Sheffield City Council’s Countryside Service Manager said: “Our woodlands play an extremely important role in Sheffield’s and surrounding areas’ landscape and wildlife. It’s essential that we maintain our woodlands and forests so that they continue to thrive and this includes replacement and restoration with resilient species of trees that can withstand new threats from pests and diseases. “We carefully plan works to make sure the right techniques are used so that we keep people safe and enhance our forests and minimise the impact on wildlife.

“These are potentially dangerous operations and the appropriate closures of public rights of way and highways are required to keep the public safe. We ask people to respect and adhere to these while these important works take place.” Keith Tomkins, Sheffield Lakeland Partnership Manager said “This important work will go a long way to supporting wildlife in the Sheffield Lake-

land Landscape area, including species highlighted in the Landscape Conservation Action Plan, such as willow tit and goshawk but other bird species like fly catcher will benefit from the works. But by no means will all the conifers disappear; where the landscape is enhanced by conifers they will be retained and managed in such a way as to improve the habitat for wildlife and people including planting broadleaved buffers around the edges and along water courses. In addition it must be recognised that forestry is an important revenue source, earning money which is used to manage the rest of the woodlands around Sheffield. Where these plantations are retained the partnership is working together to plan future forestry operations so there will always be suitable habitat for birds like nightjars which favour clear felled areas.” Sheffield City Council, Yorkshire Water and Sheffield & Rotherham Wildlife Trust are working towards a joint vision of woodland and forest management and hope to involve other woodland owners in time. This project is part of the Sheffield Lakeland Landscape Partnership, made possible by funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund.

When the New Year comes around, we often look to try out new hobbies and activities. Crafts are becoming increasingly popular with TV now showing many popular crafting programmes. Learning more traditional hobbies is also making a huge come back as people enjoy the positive effect on well being crafting has

Supported by LEA funding, the workshops currently on offer at The Venue include making beaded jewellery; this course teaches beginners and more advanced techniques to create individual pieces of jewellery using beads. There is also a folk art project class using traditional folk art painting techniques to decorate a magazine holder. Folk art can be attempted by anyone and if you’ve no painting experience that’s fine as the techniques are suitable for everyone. Photographs often stay on computers and phones nowadays rather than being visible so why not display them in memory books for all to see. The scrapbooking and mini albums course shows you how to make a mini album from scratch, creating a covered album with loads of pages ready to hold your photos, add some journaling and you will have a wonderful memory book to keep and treasure.

If you’re not a member and would like to support There will also be a mixed media course using a us, you can join at your local store or online at wide variety of paints, stamps, pastes and papers to www.coop.co.uk. fully explore your creative side and get messy, turn these into canvases, journals or notebooks. Penistone Scouts search for new volunteers PENISTONE Scouts urgently need adult volunteers to help run the group. You don’t need to be Bear Grylls to make a difference. You don’t need to have been a Scout when you were younger. You don’t even need to know how to put up a tent.

Penistone Scouts welcome people of all ages, genders, races and backgrounds, and are only able to change lives because volunteers are able to lend a hand for as little or as much time as you can spare, and you’ll get more out than you put in.

The group provides the training. You show up, get stuck in, and make memories for life. You can find out more by visiting penistonescouts.uk/volunteer or look on Facebook or Twitter. Just search for Penistone Scouts.

A special meeting has been arranged at Penistone Grammar School ALC on Monday January 20 from 7.30pm which will be in the lecture theatre, and the group hope to welcome as many of you to this important presentation and open evening as possible. The meeting is

for parents, guardians, grandparents and any adult members of the community who share a vested interest in supporting and developing young local people.

ENVIRONMENT GROUP SEEKS NEW BLOOD FOR more than 20 years, Stannington has benefitted from the work carried out by the volunteers of Action for Stannington.

Now, with some original members looking to step down, the group is staging an open day in Stannington Park’s sports pavilion to attract new volunteers to carry that work on into the new decade. The benefits Action for Stannington has brought about have been felt in the village itself, in the more recent developments lower down Stannington Road, both private and local authority, and in the hinterland including High Riggs, Dungworth, Storrs and beyond. In these areas, volunteers have removed litter, rubbish from fly-tipping, dog mess and more. They have kept public green spaces including Stannington Park clean and well maintained. The group has raised funds for the replacement of

disintegrating park benches and dog litter bins, and to erect and maintain floral planters and ornamental raised beds “Stannington people are very generous with their time and very hard-working,” said Katie Lukey, one of the Action for Stannington team leaders. “Volunteers from within the community take on many roles including organising our annual carnival every July, running and maintaining our local library, establishing a food bank locally, and they have done sterling work helping keep Stannington as the clean, green and safe place everyone who lives here wants to see. It’s really exciting and satisfying to see what a difference our work can make.

“We’re not looking for any particular skill sets in our new recruits, though practical skills of many kinds will be useful. What we need most of all is people with commitment and a willingness to muck in - to get on with tasks and get on with other volunteers.

“There’s always plenty to be done, and whatever our volunteers are able to contribute, it’s always welcome. Everyone who volunteers is provided with any necessary protective clothing, and full safety instructions. There is also a good supply of tea and coffee in the pavilion to keep us all going.” Katie adds, “The work will suit students looking to enhance their CVs, people of working age who are either looking for work or looking for something to do that is different from their day jobs, and retired people not ready to become couch potatoes. Everyone who is interested should come and visit us at the Open Day and we can explain roles more fully.” Action for Stannington’s open day is to be held on Wednesday January 22 in the sports pavilion in Stannington Park, close to the Uppergate Road entrance, between 2pm and 5pm. Further details can be found at actionforstannington.org.uk.

We believe that every bride should have the fit, style and luxury of a brand new designer gown without the stress of a hefty price tag. All of our gowns are priced between £249 and £695 and are sold off-the-peg so they are available to try, buy and take away on the day. Most bridal designers typically discontinue their gowns twice a year to make way for new collections. We buy our gowns directly from the designers just as

they are being discontinued which means we are able to offer brand new gowns that are no longer available elsewhere and we are also able to sell them at huge discounts saving brides between 50% to 75% off the designer’s original RRP. We have a wide range of styles and sizes and with approximately 250 gowns in stock, we are likely to have something to suit most tastes and budgets. We also stock a good range of brand new headpieces and veils. Amber’s Bridal does not have standard opening times - we are open by appointment only and we can offer flex-

Pigs go down fighting against table toppers York R.I. 20-7 Stocksbridge RUFC “A HEROIC performance, full of pride and passion,” was how rugby supremo Rhys Keenan described Stocksbridge Rugby’s efforts at the weekend after a 20-7 defeat at York R.I. They were up against table toppers York RI and with Ricky James, Andy Beal, first choice goal kicker Scott Bowskill, half backs Ben Westby and Frith all missing, Keenan was forced to use his playing roster to the full.

League international Menzie Yere signed off his short stint with the Piggies before returning to Sheffield Eagles duties. A chilly afternoon soon warmed up as Stocksbridge took the game to their high flying opponents.

Tom Brierly was recalled to the second row and there was a welcome return for evergreen Ricky Christopherson at scrum half after missing the whole of 2019 thru injury.

Yere made a break, skipper Rowett was making holes in the York defence and Ryan Smith was running from everywhere as Stocksbridge dominated the early stages. The physicality was evident as three York players were forced to leave the field after some bruising collisions, with Woodcock using his bulk to good effect.

Luke Gentles earned a place on the wing as former Papau New Guinea Rugby

Stocksbridge, for all their efforts, were unable to force the score and were

pegged back as York took advantage of some indiscipline to land four penalties, leaving the half time score 12-0 to York. That the home side were forced to kick these penalties, rather than look for the opening try of the game was of some consolation to the visitors. The half time message of more of the same and to believe in themselves inspired Keenan’s troops. Stocksbridge exerted plenty of pressure in the second half to create some try scoring opportunities, but a combination of strong home defence and a touch of ill fortune halted their progress. Rowett broke from a scrum and the hardworking Whitaker won the ball

to give Christopherson the room to set Jack Spencer free. He found Yere with a simple pass and he did the rest, bowling over for a simple try to give Stocksbridge further hope of a result. Spencer converted, however the home side restored their advantage soon after from another frustrating Stocksbridge indiscretion at the break down, taking another shot at goal and the inevitable three points. It was a good open game of rugby played by two teams looking to entertain and both sets deserve credit for the high standard of rugby on show. It was, however, the home side who struck a killer blow, rolling a maul from a line out to score an unconverted try and

Dragons section cracks on THE Dragons Section of Stocksbridge Golf Club completed the latest round of its winter competition, the Dragons Christmas Cracker.

Round five on January 8 saw Martin Bradwell (18) win with a convincing 40 points and his round was consistently good for 18 holes, often the main factor for doing well in any competition. The ever consistent Les Wright (13) came in second with 38 points that included a commendable 10 pars over the 18 holes with a 76 gross score.

Dave Broadhurst (17) came in third with 36 points. But for a poor seventh and 15th Dave would have been challenging for the win, with a round that included birdies on the sixth and 11th. Saturday January 11 saw the Gents Section compete for Pro’s Prize run by the club professional, Roger Broad. A relatively small field of 22 competed in some very windy and at times wet conditions. Peter Finney (5), one of the club’s regular Sheffield Golf Union League

players, won the stableford format with 40 points. Peter’s round included three birdies on the second, third and 11th and his gross score was +1, quite a feat in the conditions. David Peace (14) came second with 39 points and played very consistently over the 18 holes. Curt Newton (28) came third with 37 points, the same score as Andrew Finney (5), Richard Shepherd (10) and Glyn Stainforth (14), but with a better back nine than all three players.

Valley runners honour New Year tradition A WET Sunday morning saw a good contingent of Valley Hill Runners at Fairholmes car park at Ladybower to take part in the annual New Year run up and around the Derwent Dam. This has been a regular fun run event for about 15 years with everyone out to enjoy the event and generally work up an appetite for lunch afterwards in the Ladybower Inn. A good time was had by all who took part.

War Memorial Ladies in extra time thriller Worksop Town Ladies 2-3 Oughtibridge WM Ladies (AET) OUGHTIBRIDGE War Memorial Ladies edged out Worksop in the first game of 2020 in a thrilling contest at Sandy Lane to progress to the quarter final of the Sheffield and Hallam County Cup. All looked well when Sam Woodham converted early

on but the War Memorial Ladies couldn’t extend their lead and Worksop levelled after the break to take the game into extra time. With injuries and tired legs now a factor the action really hotted up as Worksop took the lead in the first period only for Chelsea

Wall to peg them back and then Codi Melia put Oughtibridge back in front on 104 minutes. They held out during the second period to bring the spoils home in what was a better result than performance.

It has set up a tasty quarter final against iconic National League side Sheffield FC down at the War Memorial this Sunday January 19 with a 1pm kick off. All spectators are welcome and the ladies would really appreciate the support.

STEELS HAVE WIND IN SAILS Stocksbridge Park Steels 2 Loughborough Dynamo 1

IN a game affected by the strong winds blowing around the Look Local Stadium, Stocksbridge Park Steels showed great resilience to grind out three points in this league encounter. Once again Steels found themselves a goal behind early on in the game. Trench failed to deal with a ball that was held up by the wind and gave a free kick away on the edge of the box. The shot went around the wall and past the diving Carney into the bottom corner of the goal. However, Park Steels are made of strong stuff this season and coping with the difficult conditions they played themselves back into the game. Scott Ruthven pounced in the box to bring them level then leading goal scorer Luke Mangham gave them the lead just before the break. Steels started the second half well and should have increased their lead but chances went begging. This gave Loughborough a lifeline and with the wind at their backs they applied the pressure. Steels put in a collective defensive display to make sure they maintained the three points. The win gives them four points from the last two games to keep them in touch with the play off positions. They have another home game this Saturday at the Look Local Stadium against Wisbech FC with a 3pm kick off.
