£100k for Oxley Park

Is Oughtibridge in barnsley? - PAGE 02

Steels go seven unbeaten - PAGE 20

The Friends of Oxley Park group are excited to announce that Oxley Park has been awarded £100,000 in public health funding which will go towards a regeneration project to improve recreational facilities at the park. The group’s focus will be to provide a new children’s play facility and create a bespoke all wheel’s area to replace the existing Skatepark. The project is in its early stages but has been assigned project co-ordinators by Sheffield City Council, and have projected a start time as early as spring 2021, subject to community consultations.

President of FOP, Victoria Faulkner has said “The group was formed less than 12 months ago and has been instrumental in securing the £100k, which the park desperately needs to bring it anywhere close to the standard of other parks in Sheffield. We are extremely grateful for the support we have received from a diverse selection of the community. Also, without the efforts of other community figures such as Tom Newman from the Steel Valley Project and Labour Councillor Julie Grocutt, the group would have never gained the momentum it has in such as short space of time.” The group still need to raise a tremendous amount of funds to deliver the quality fa-

cilities it hopes for, so the group are calling on the community to help raise funds. By searching Oxley Park Regeneration Project Fundraiser on the Go Fund Me Website you can donate as little as £5 towards the regeneration project. Lindsey Hible the groups secretary says “I moved to the area over 10 years ago and I love the community feel, the people and it’s been great to see the development of Fox Valley which has brought a new buzz to the area. What we need now is something where adults and children can get active, have fun, socialise and be outdoors. The parks location next to the leisure centre makes it perfect to create an area of the town which provides facilities continued on page 9...

Is Oughtibridge in Barnsley? It is now…

Local News

Choir raises £3,300

A new development on the site of the old Oughtibridge paper mill has had its plans of naming streets after local folk quashed by Barnsley council, due to its location on the border of Sheffield and Barnsley. “ Statement from Barratt/David Wilson Homes regarding the street names at the Oughtibridge Mill site Unfortunately we will not be able to proceed any further with the information received, we have been informed by Barnsley Council that they will not accept names of people (alive or deceased) for street names. As we are wanting the whole development to be seen as connected rather than a Sheffield/Barnsley divide we are looking at other alternatives for the street names that will now be used on this development. Many local people are aghast that Barnsley council can have a say in the matter. And social media got active with news after Bradfield Parish Council posted the above statement from the developers. “Oughtibridge is Sheffield not Barnsley.” “What a joke” The Sheffield/Barnsley border between Wharncliffe Side and Oughtibridge is the river Don. The new housing development in Oughtibridge appears to have the majority of land on the other side of the river?!

Bolsterstone Male Voice Choir chairman Mick Siddall has presented a cheque to the Weston Park Cancer Charity for £3,300. At the choir’s practice last Monday in Bolsterstone Village Hall, Helen Gentle came along to receive the cheque on behalf of the charity and she outlined its valuable research work and support for patients and families. The funds were raised at a concert at Sheffield Cathedral organised by Mick in recognition of the “wonderful care” his late wife Carol received at Weston Park..

And the choir’s annual charity golf day at Stocksbridge Golf Club in the summer raised £2,000 for the same charity, bringing a total of £5,300 raised for this worthwhile cause last year. Special guest at the concert was Gervase Phinn, the author, broadcaster and comic raconteur best known for his best-selling series of five books about his time as a schools inspector in the Yorkshire Dales. The evening featured Bolsterstone Male Voice Choir, conducted by Fran Wells, Loxley Silver Band, soprano Elisabeth Beard and pianist

James Barnett, presenting a varied programme of top-class music. Retired teacher Mick said: “The staff at Weston Park are superb and the care my late wife Carol received was nothing short of wonderful. I am hugely grateful that so many talented musicians took part in this memorable evening, performing without any charge which was a very touching gesture.” The choir is busy rehearsing for a concert at St John’s, Deepcar, on Saturday March 14th followed by a trip to an international music festival and competition in Verona, Italy in early April.

NEW LIGHT INSTALLATION WILL TAKE YOU TO THE EDGE OF THE UNIVERSE AND BACK The countdown to Sheffield Cathedral’s next light installation is on! The Observatory, by the award-winning artistic collaboration, Luxmuralis, who brought The Angels are Coming to the Cathedral for Christmas, opens on March 13. 075 Sixer Jan20_Layout 1 08/01/2020 12:29 Page 1

Fresh from the success of The Angels are Coming, the interior of Sheffield Cathedral will be transformed once more for another eight days of incredible illuminations. Visitors will be wowed as they wander through the Cathedral on a walking journey that will take them to the edge of the universe and back. Set to bespoke music throughout, The Observatory will be a spectacular immersive experience. Light artworks projected onto the interior of the Cathedral will expose the beauty of one of Sheffield’s oldest buildings. Visitors will also have the chance to see original footage of the first moon landing in 1969, experience walking on Mars, wonder about the creation story and the Big Bang theory and view a dazzling image of the Earth as seen from space under a galaxy of stars. The Observatory is the latest in a series of events for the Cathedral. These are being delivered in partnership with Luxmuralis Artistic Collaborations, and form part of a three-year programme of fresh and creative engagement projects that started with The Angels Are Coming last December. The Very Reverend Peter Bradley, DL The Dean of Sheffield said: “It was a big decision for the Cathedral to commit to The Angels are Coming but we’re so glad we did. The response from the people of Sheffield and further afield was incredible. More than 11,500 people visited our Cathedral, many of whom had not been in the Cathedral before. It was wonderful to see so many families here. So we are thrilled to be working with Peter Walker and the Luxmuralis team again for The Observatory and can’t wait to see the Cathedral transformed again through imaginative use of light, sound and digital imagery.” The Reverend Canon Keith Farrow, Vice Dean and Canon Missioner added: “2020 is Year of Cathedrals and Cathedrals have been an attraction for people over many hundreds of years. These amazing buildings hold something special within them in the beauty of the architecture and the hugely interesting history and heritage story. They tell of local and national events and are places of prayer and spirituality. It is our hope that events such as The Observatory will attract many people, both old and new visitors, to experience the wonder of this place as never before. “ The Observatory runs from 13 – 20 March. Tickets are on sale from the Cathedral website or in person from the Cathedral Gift Shop and are priced £6 for adults, £4 for children (aged 4 to 12), children aged 3 and under FREE. A family ticket is £17.50 (2 adults and 2 children). First entry to the Cathedral will be at 6:40pm and then every 20 minutes thereafter. Last entry at 9pm. involving 16 year-old boy The police watchdog is investigating the case of a 16-yearold boy who was taken to hospital with a head injury after being hit with a police baton. South Yorkshire Police said officers had been responding to disorder on Saturday between football fans at Barnsley Interchange. Responding to posting on social media of a video of an incident in Barnsley on Saturday, Dr Alan Billings, South Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner, said: “The incident is a very serious matter and one that I have asked the Chief Constable for a full account of.

Studies have linked potatoes and their nutrients to a variety of impressive health benefits, including improved blood sugar control, reduced heart disease risk and higher immunity. They may also improve digestive health and combat signs of aging. Potatoes are also quite filling, which means they may help you lose weight by curbing hunger pains and cravings. All in all, potatoes are a great addition to your diet in

Ms Poolman said the boy was taken to hospital by ambulance and the officer also attended hospital. A 47-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker. Barnsley were playing Sheffield Wednesday in a Championship game at the Oakwell ground on Saturday.

“I am aware that South Yorkshire Police has referred this matter to the Independent Office for Police Conduct and that a full review of all available footage will be undertaken. That is the right thing to do. “The public can be assured that I will be listening very carefully to what the Chief Constable reports and that the Force will be held to account. Match Commander Ch Supt Sara Poolman said: “A full, open investigation, including extended video footage, will take place to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the actions that led to a 16-year-old boy sustaining a head injury from an officer’s baton and

National survey shows increasing satisfaction with city’s roads

People are increasingly satisfied with Sheffield’s roads People in Sheffield are more satisfied with the condition of the city’s roads than they were last year, according to a national survey. Of 112 UK local authorities participating in the annual National Highways & Transport (NHT) Public Satisfaction Survey, Sheffield has continued to show improvements in all areas managed under its highways maintenance contract, Streets Ahead. The 2019 results, released late last year, show that Sheffield scored over 5% higher than the national average in the categories: condition of highways, highway maintenance and street lighting. In 2017, Sheffield was congratulated for making the biggest overall improvement in satisfaction levels over 10 years, with satisfaction with the condition of Sheffield’s roads doubling since 2010. Of particular interest this year is the improved satisfaction rate in the area of the condition of the city’s highways, which shows a 5% increase in satisfaction since last year and a score 14 % above the UK national average.

lights, bridges and other items on and around our streets over a 25 year period. The NHT Public Satisfaction Survey helps councils improve performance by sharing best practice and collecting the public’s views on, and satisfaction with, Highway and Transport Services in local authority areas every year.

Cabinet member for Environment, Street Scene and Climate Change at Sheffield City Council, Councillor Mark Jones said: “The National Highways and Transportation Survey results for 2019 show the positive and anticipated impact our Streets Ahead programme is having across the city. “We know there’s still a way to go. But, with resurfacing completed on 70% of our roads and pavements, the improving scores are testament to the much needed investment realised through the Streets Ahead programme. To date, Streets Ahead has resurfaced over 1,700 miles of pavement, replaced 3,448 drainage gullies, installed 66,834 new LED streetlights, responded to 99,288 requests for street cleaning, resurfaced over 883 miles of road, repaired over 154,056 potholes and made improvements to over 1,350 bridges and structures across Sheffield.

Your Letters Less than a month left to apply for up to £5,000 towards YOUR rural start-up business There is less than one month to go until the deadline for The Prince’s Countryside Fund and Forest Holidays Rural Start-Up Fund. If you have or are embarking on a rural business venture and can demonstrate how your business will, in some manner, support rural communities, promote conservation of the countryside, or support rural sustainability then you are eligible to apply!

Tom Youngs, England rugby player, farmer, and ambassador for The Prince’s Countryside Fund said: “We all know how hard it is to set up a new rural business. The Prince’s Countryside Fund and Forest Holidays’ Rural Start-Up Fund is an excellent opportunity to offer a helping hand to rural entrepreneurs embarking on a new business venture. In addition to financial support, winners will have the opportunity to receive mentoring support from a relevant member of the Forest Holidays team for 12 months. This is a really exciting opportunity, which I am proud to support.

Your Letters Nuisance Teenagers I’d like to raise an issue as to the number of younger teenagers on bikes at Fox Valley. This is becoming more frequent on paths and walk ways. Only Sunday of this week, two young teenage boys came flying past us while we was walking passed Gregg’s. No consideration for my two year old on foot and in fact told my 5 year old to F off out of his way. Likewise no consideration for the lady near us on a mobility scooter. The boy was followed by a larger group of boys and girls. They shot off on bike before we could confront them but remained around the area. They really upset my son and could have really hurt my daughter, we had just been out for at family meal. I have attempted to address this with Fox Valley directly but they have yet to respond. Parents really should be educating their children about this sort of inappropriate behaviour.

Jess Widdowson, Enterprise Team Leader at Barnsley College, will speak about Talent United, the College’s employer engagement initiative, which aims to bridge the gap between education and employment, and how you can get involved. An open networking session and complimentary refreshments will be provided for guests.

I have recently had a number of people call at my Grenoside surgery regarding the deterioration of what is an already poor bus service in the area. These comments are also reflected in a number of questions received at public meetings in town hall. I have also listened to complaints about the bus service when door knocking throughout the area – from High Green to Burncross. Sadly the council have had very little control of public transport since the Tories’ deregulated buses in the 1980s. This is why I am, alongside all Sheffield Labour councillors, calling on the South Yorkshire Mayor, Dan Jarvis, to use any new powers from the South Yorkshire Devolution deal to re-regulate our buses – so local people can decide the routes, timetables and fares, rather than profit driven bus companies. I am keen to hear from anyone in the area about issues relating to public transport, and I believe that by coming together we can mount a coordinated campaign to put pressure on the South Yorkshire Mayor and the local MP to bring public transport back under more public control, and to demand that it is properly resourced. My email address is adam.hurst@councillor. sheffield.gov.uk. Alternatively, you can come along to one of my regular councillor surgeries. These are held at the High Green Miners Welfare Hall on the first Saturday of each month between 10 and 11 a.m, or on the second Saturday of each month at Grenoside Community Centre between 10 and 11 a.m.

Jess said: “We look forward to welcoming attendees to this event to enjoy a glass of fizz whilst hearing about how to get involved in a great programme that can make a positive impact on a young person’s life and their business. I am always keen to hear from people in our area and will always do everything I can to help.

Talent United regularly hosts free partner-led Adam Hurst networking events and Masterclasses designed Labour Councillor, West Ecclesfield to develop key skills. These events are open to everyone, which makes them perfect for those aspiring to broaden their network of local contacts, Hollin busk farm development business owners wanting to introduce new skills, or I would be obliged if you could run an article on individuals with an interest in a particular subject. the re-submission of outline planning application no: 17/04673/OUT at Hollin Busk , Deepcar.

0114 283 1100

Hallam Land Management have recently submitted a further planning application to build 80+ new homes on the open green space at Hollin Busk , Deepcar. With regard to their previous application there were 500 plus objections to this proposed site by the local community. The planning has been slightly amended and recently submitted to Sheffield Council. There are less than 6 notices posted near to the proposed site , and I feel that the majority of Deepcar and Stocksbridge residents are unaware that this application has been re-submitted. I would appreciate you letting the local community aware of these recent developments, so they can make objections if they so wish.

As the cold snap kicks across the UK it’s easy to assume you need to spend big in order to flee to warmer climes. Fear not, though, getting at least some sun on your face during November, December, January

sounds a little ridiculous, but when you consider Marrakech is under five hours away it begins to make a lot more sense. AUL TRAVEL lie just beyond the city itself- there’s a reason Morocco’s big hitter is a yearround destination for Britons. Sicily, Italy Just off the boot of Italy, Sicily doesn’t come as cheap as some of our other choices, but makes up for it in sheer beauty. The capital, Palermo, is stunning and offers an insight into how life was

thousands of years ago, the worldfamous Cappella Palatina boasts jawdropping mosaics, and there are abundant unspoilt villages to explore too. Oh, and as this is a small island you’ll never be too far from the serene coastline. Malta & Gozo (pictured) With so much history tied

to Britain it’s understandable Malta and neighbouring island Gozo have long been attracting sunstarved residents of our islands. If you’re sticking with Malta itself, Valetta is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in its own right, and the old capital, Medina, is a walled city that must be seen to be believed. Meanwhile, Gozo has endless churches

to be discovered and a slower pace of life, along with some of the best diving on the planet. What more do we need to say? Lanzarote Just 70-miles off the coast of West Africa, and at just over four hours flight time, Lanzarote is definitely one to consider. You can expect temperatures of around 20C even

in the run up to Christmas, there’s some stunning architectural gems to be discovered, excellent beaches and delicious seafood ready for you to savour. Meanwhile, the volcanic nature of the island means the landscape is positively lunar, and completely unique.

Top of the table clash ends in defeat for Church Penistone Church FC 1-3 Staveley Miners’ Welfare They had their first choice goal keeper missing who got injured on Thursday, they had to draught someone in last minute and I felt we didn’t put him under enough pressure. We knew exactly how we were going to set up, we knew exactly how they were going to play, and we talked about it, we scored early, we started on the front foot, in the first ten minutes we scored first shot, first goal and I was thinking let’s go get a second, let’s keep putting then under pressure with shots, crosses. We only had one shot on target in the first half and it was the one when we scored, they cleared one from the line directly from Nathan Keightley’s corner, we can’t keep relying on a direct corner to class as a shot.

It hurt a little bit the way they celebrated the second goal and the way they celebrated in the changing room, it was a massive game and we didn’t under play how important the game was it just felt that they played the game much bigger.

In a top of the table clash Penistone Church suffered a home defeat which saw the visitors, Staveley MW move three points clear at the top, with four games in hand, in the Toolstation NCEL Premier Division.

Hopefully it’s a little bit of a reality check, it’s only three points it’s not going to dictate where either of us finish and they have to play Liversedge twice, Yorkshire Amateur twice, we still have thirteen games we know what we need to do, we know where we need to get to Manager Ian Richards, commented. but we know we have to play better than we “It’s always hard to say it but the best team have today and we can do. won today and the best team won because they played the conditions better than we did Finally we offer our deepest condolences and defended better than we did, you can see to James Young (Jammy) who sadly lost his why they’ve had the highest number of clean mother to cancer recently. Stocksbridge Rugby ‘out gunned’ Stocksbridge 9-27 Burley

Stocksbridge Rugby slumped to their second defeat on the bounce, ans their hopes of promotion from the Yorkshire Division 4 Premier took a substantial blow at the hands of Leeds based Burley Rugby in round 2 of the play-offs, losing by 27pts to 9pts at Coal Pit Lane at the weekend. The 1st XV squad remains beset by injuries however, Head Coach Keenan was able to include prop Ricky James after a period on the sidelines. With the weather making the main pitch ‘out of bounds’, the curator prepared the reserve field, but the conditions were heavy, wet & the beginnings of the storm made running rugby a difficult task.

NO WAY THROUGH: Try as they might Stocksbridge could not break the visitors defence in their promotion play-off bid Pic: Pete Revitt

Stocksbridge started brightly, & were 9pts to the good after just 14 minutes with Scotty Bowskill, slotting 3 penalties as the visitors struggled to cope with the initial intensity & pressure brought by the home forwards. This ascendancy lasted until the 27th minute when some weak defence presented the visitors with a try scoring opportunity, which they accepted along with a further gift on 35 minutes, leaving the half time score ; Stocksbridge Rugby 9pts – Burley Rugby 10pts.

With the Stocksbridge bench being emptied shortly after the break, Keenan himself & livewire back rower Newton were added to fray to make some impact, but it was the visitors who struck first with a well taken try of their own on 50 minutes. Try as they might, Stocksbridge were unable to breach the Burley defensive line, & they added a further, bonus point, try of their own on 61 minutes. With time running out & the game gone, Burley closed the scoring with their 5th & final try of the afternoon, leaving the final score Stocksbridge 9 - 27 Burley. The Wilson Construction Player of the Day award went to the returning Ricky Rooney for a heroic defensive performance, whilst centre Adam Middlehurst put up a good fight in the mid field, halting many attacks almost single handedly. A clearly disappointed Rhys Keenan said afterwards “credit to them, they were a well drilled side, & their style was effective in the conditions” adding “this shows the true benefit of a commitment to training by the whole squad”. Stocksbridge’s rugby Supremo will need to rally his troops for the weekend as they face table toppers Bramley Phoenix in round three of the play off series, where a win will just about keep the Piggy’s in contention. Keenan is relying on availability to produce a squad capable of completing a difficult task.

Awards Night for runners On the same weekend that the Oscars were awarded, Penistone Footpath runners had their very own awards night at the Venue in Stocksbridge. Sam Shaw had a very successful night winning ladies club champion, road champion and cross country champion. Simon Pike won men’s club champion and also the challenge competition. Scott Hinchcliffe was men’s road and cross country champion while the respective mens and ladies fell champions were Damian Kilpin and Julie Darigala. The Gary Dean Memorial trophy was awarded to Bill Phillips for his impressive performances in the over70 age category. The Chairman’s award went to Paul Fryers for his continued significant contribution to the running of the club. The club merit award was awarded to Pauline Senior for her many years’ service to the club. Other winners were Charlie Skipper and Rachael Mayston for the Parkrun competition,

The coaches award was pre- Saturday 8th February. Despite the challenging condisented to Ewan Mackie. tions the competition drew out an excellent standard of golf and there was a three way tie for the winning score of 41 points. Paul Cleary (25) took the honours though with the best of the back nine scores. Mick Shouler (13) pipped Richard Hastings (16) for second place, again with a slightly better back nine total.

The total points scored by Richard Hastings has helped him extend his overall lead. He now has a 17 point advantage over Dave Peace and Dave Stringer. It’s a commanding lead, but given that this round has knocked his handicap further down to 15, from 19 at the start of the Winter Cup in December, Richard will have to maintain his form to keep a clear lead. Then there is a pack of ten players all within 10 point of each other, ready to make a move if their form improves. The Club is now preparing for the impending Spring and Summer seasons, though the weather at the moment sug-

gests that it will be a while yet. Club President, John B Yeates, confirmed that Stocksbridge Golf Club has finished a very good year with “an increase in membership, which is good news. We have also finished 2019 in a strong financial position, of which the details will be shared at the Annual General Meeting on 26th February. Because of this the Directors are now considering how to enhance the machinery which the Greenkeepers need to keep the course in top condition, as well as plans to bolster the course staffing complement.”

Slick Steels go seven unbeaten

Stocksbridge Park Steels FC took their unbeaten run to seven games last Saturday with a one nil win away at Market Drayton FC.

With a swirling wind and a pitch akin to a parks pitch the whole squad applied themselves well throughout the game. Playing up the slight slope Steels found it hard at times to get the ball near the opposition’s box, and on the few times that they did the qual-

ity of the final ball was lacking. Manchester United loanee, Jacob Carney produced a good save to keep the scores level at the break.

Steels played much better going forward in the second half and created several chances from good passing moves, the breakthrough eventually came on fifty five minutes when Scott Ruthven pounced on a knockdown to turn sharply and volley in from an acute angle.

Steels were on top for the whole of the second half but the second goal wouldn’t come, but apart from one audacious effort that whizzed past the post Carney was never troubled. This was Steels third clean sheet in the last four games and the three points keeps them in the fifth play off position. On Saturday they travel to second placed Stamford FC before the visit on the 22nd of third placed Belper .
