CHARITY BIKE RIDE RETURNS

THE Steel Valley Ride charity mountain bike event is back this summer for its fourth year, taking place on Saturday July 18.

The event is organised by Stocksbridge based countryside management charity, the Steel Valley Project, and helps to raise funds for their work in the Upper Don area, improving the environment for people and wildlife. This increasingly popular event is a 31-mile challenge which goes through the open countryside and moorland above Stocksbridge. Starting and finishing from Trek Sheffield in the Fox Valley Shopping Centre, participants will follow a clearly signed route to Langsett before tackling the technical terrain across Cut Gate and Derwent Edge. Marshalls will be on hand and there will be a well-stocked feed station mid-way to replenish energy levels before riders return to Stocksbridge via some of the quieter roads and lesser travelled bridleways of Strines. With over 3,500 feet of climbing, the ride is not for the fainthearted. However, the challenge always attracts mountain bikers of all levels and, last year all 150

places sold out well ahead of the event.

Comments received after that event included; “Another great event”, “Thank you to all involved in organising such a good event, well signposted and great marshals” and “Roll on next year”. Event partners Trek Sheffield are providing event HQ and are donating a pair of mountain biking shoes for an early entry prize draw. Liberty Steel are providing free parking for all participants and Enzygo, based in Fox Valley, have donated a prize draw gift. Steel Valley Project General Manager, Tom Newman said: “Entries for our 2020 event opened at the beginning of March and places are selling fast. With only 150 places available again this year, we recommend that people get their entries in early to avoid disappointment. “As an extra bonus, if you’re one of the first 50 entrants, you’ll be entered into a draw to win either a pair of mountain biking shoes or a bottle of wine in a wooden gift box.” More information on the Steel Valley Ride, including how to enter be found at www.steelvalleyride.wordpress.com

MP welcomes upgrades to Penistone line stations MIRIAM Cates, the MP for Penistone and Stocksbridge, has welcomed news that the Government will provide three local railway stations with a share of a ÂŁ20 million fund to make them more accessible for disabled people. It will pay for a number of improvements to the station designed to improve accessibility and user experience, such as the removal of steps, platform access improve-

ments, real time information, and accessible seating. Commenting on the announcement, Miriam Cates said: “Getting around on public transport is still too difficult for many disabled people, and as the Government prioritises levelling up transport infrastructure, we must ensure that nobody is left behind. “That’s why I am delighted that these three local stations will benefit from extra funding to make journeys easier and more accessible. “I am also looking to achieve improvements to the

service on the Penistone Line, and will be working with the Government and Northern on their plans to provide more seats and better reliability on rail services across the region. The announcement was also welcomed by Cllr John Wilson and Cllr Robert Barnard who represent Penistone East on Barnsley Council. Cllr Wilson commented: “These stations are a vital link for our towns and villages, and I am delighted that they are receiving investment to modernise them and make them more accessible for local residents.

PENISTONE AND STOCKSBRIDGE SPREAD THE WORD OF FAIRTRADE FROM February 24 to March 8, both Penistone and Stocksbridge held events to mark Fairtrade Fortnight. As well as helping all local schools access useful materials from the Fairtrade Foundation, Fairtrade in Penistone (FTiP) ran a very successful event in St Andrew’s Church. Local artist and teacher Helen Slater gave an illustrated talk about the voluntary work she has done in Nepal and also exhibited some of her artwork. Joy Webb of FTiP then gave a short talk about the value of fair trade and what steps we as individuals can take to help. Fairtrade refreshments were served and there were Fairtrade goods on sale, some of them made in Nepal. Joy Webb of Fairtrade in Penistone said: “FTiP would like to thank their friends at Fair Trader in Holmfirth for bringing them.

“Thanks to all those who attended, including Borough Councillor David Greenhough. Your generous donations have been split between Fairtrade in Penistone and Community Action Nepal and will make a real difference to some of the poorest people on the planet. Meanwhile, the Fairtrade Stocksbridge Group had a stall at the Co-op on February 29 to celebrate Fairtrade Fortnight.

Fairtrade Stocksbridge with their stall

They held a raffle with a hamper of Fairtrade goods being won by Ann Pearson. The hamper was donated by Stocksbridge Co-op and just over £50 was raised and donated to the Co-op Community Fund. Fairtrade Stocksbridge are a small group who are trying to maintain the town’s FairTrade status. If you feel you can help or need more information, please contact Margaret on 0114 2882393.

Taxi drivers are also revealed their unease with 95% likely having to upgrade their vehicles to avoid paying the proposed pollution charge. Councillor Bob Johnson, Cabinet Member for Transport and Sustainability said: “The survey results show that people want to see action taken – but if we’re going to be successful in reducing pollution we need to help taxi drivers and local small businesses move to cleaner vehicles. It’s vital that we get investment from Central Government to assist local businesses

“The survey results show that the zone is not the only way to reduce pollution. It is essential that we look to improve public transport, especially bus journeys. We also need to change our streets to promote walking and cycling. Such changes will take time but our recent Transforming Cities bid is a major step in securing funding to deliver the infrastructure Sheffield needs to enable people to travel in a safe, healthy and sustainable way.”

Greg Fell, Director of Public Health for Sheffield said: “On days of poor air pollution, we see more people having asthma attacks, heart attacks and strokes. Poor air quality is being linked with other diseases, including dementia - it’s something we can’t ignore.”

Sheffield and Rotherham Council have been jointly mandated by Central Government’s Joint Air Quality Unit (JAQU) to reduce Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) in

The consultation shows that people believe that the solution is cleaner vehicles and better alternatives than cars, including public transport, walking and cycling. These bring benefits of not only reduced emissions, but extra physical activity and reduced exposure to air pollution –which is often worse inside

Chapeltown-based SERVING THE LOCAL charity partners COMMUNITY FOR with British OVER 60 YEARS Transplant Games

CARTERS of Chapeltown was established in 1957 and has served the local community for over 60 years.

Restoration work is carried out by the dedicated team on both classics and future classics.

Originally a BMC (Austin Rover) dealership, Carters switched to Peugeot Talbot in 1984 before beginning their long association with Ford in 1987.

Many of the cars restored at Carters go on to win local and national awards. Such is the level of trust built up with their very loyal customer base that much custom comes through recommendations to friends and car clubs.

Despite the changes, Carters still pride themselves on being a friendly, family-run firm run by brothers Phil and Paul Carter. They are the only dealers in the area providing the full package of motoring services for all makes - not just Ford - from routine maintenance and repairs to MOT testing, tyres, batteries, exhausts and parts sales. This is in addition to their new and used car sales. Bodywork and paintwork repairs are carried out to the highest standards. Their reputation for this speaks for itself with work being carried out for insurance companies, businesses and the discerning private customers who want the best attention to detail on their pride and joy!

You can view a gallery of the beautifully restored cars on the Carters website at www. cartersford.co.uk. It is also a great source of information for all the services available – far too many to list here! If you still aren’t convinced that Carters should be your first port of call for your motoring needs, call in to have a look around. There are usually some interesting cars in the showroom or being worked on and the knowledgeable and friendly team are more than happy to answer any questions you might have. Carters can be found on Station Road in Chapeltown, or you can give them a call on 0114 246 7292.

A helpful, local family business

Jane came to see my parents to help them protect the family home. She really made us all feel at ease, especially my parents. We had no idea what we could do to protect Mum and Dad. Having set up trusts and Lasting Power of Attorney’s, Mum and Dad can get on with their lives without worrying, knowing everything is now in place. Thank you Jane!

Cancellation

Thanks

With regret, because of growing concern about the Coronavirus, the concert at St John’s, Deepcar, with Bolsterstone Male Voice Choir and Fox Valley Voices this Saturday March 14, is cancelled. It will be rearranged later in the year.

A big thank you to the kind person who found and handed in my telephone to the staff at Aldi Stocksbridge last Saturday afternoon, it is very much appreciated.

Also many thanks to the lovely ladies and gents at Rob Firth, Aldi for the secure storage of it until I realised it BMVC secretary was missing and collected it. Again, thanks to you all..

SHEFFIELD City Council have unveiled full details of the budget for Sheffield City Council, as well as a string of new spending commitments. Since the Conservative-Liberal Democrat government formed in 2010 Sheffield City Council has faced cuts and financial pressures amounting £475 million. This is a huge 50% of the council’s budget.

There is rising demand in social care services nationally, and councils across the country are struggling to cope. Sheffield is no different, but the city council say that due to well managed financial planning the Council has a balanced budget – meaning reserves do not have to be used. As well as providing a balanced budget Labour councillors have put forward urgent and new spending plans to help the city through some of the biggest issues it has faced for years – the social care crisis, community safety and the climate emergency. The Council is committed to funding for social care with funding increases of £53 million from £198 million in 2017/18 to £251 million in 2020/21, enhancing the major principle of looking after the most vulnerable in our city. Thousands of people who live and work in Sheffield have also recently told the council what they think about the city, and what needs to improve, through the Big City Conversation and Labour councillors have responded with urgent new spending commitments. Some of the new measures outlined included 2.5 million for an enhanced neighbourhood service to tackle fly-tipping, graffiti and dealing with anti-social behaviour. This will see community wardens to give a visible presence to our communities and to help the police. The city’s roads are also set to become safer with an extra £4 million into road safety measures.

Speaking about the Sheffield City council’s budget, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Finance, Terry Fox said: “Sheffield has borne the brunt of austerity for the last ten years, and it’s certainly not over. The impact on all public services has been huge, but local councils have faced the deepest and most sustained cuts. We have seen significant structural underfunding of our core work, in particular adult social care, for a decade. We have been forced to make many difficult choices.

Local Notices

“Despite all this, we are determined to set a Sheffield budget that fits with our values and supports preventative interventions to keep people healthy, and have identified a further ÂŁ53 million to invest in social care.

GET IT ANYWHERE!!!

“It’s also a budget which puts the climate emergency at its core – with nearly ÂŁ27 million to keep the city safe from flooding, and ÂŁ15 million spent on greening the city’s transport with more walking routes, segregated cycle lanes and bus lanes. Sadly we have no direct control over the city’s buses but we can help them get moving by trying to free up congestion. “We have also been speaking with Sheffield residents throughout the city during the Big City Conversation, and it is clear that communities are concerned about safety and how clean their streets are. This is why we have announced an extra ÂŁ2.5 million for an enhanced neighbourhood service to tackle things like fly-tipping and dealing with anti-social behaviour. This will see community wardens to give a visible presence to our communities and to help the police.

DIRECT TO YOUR PC, TABLET OR PHONE

“But our budget is not just about tackling the effects of crime but working proactively to stop it at its source – by investing ÂŁ2 million extra for Young People’s services. “I’m also pleased to announce that all of the city’s community libraries will get a funding boost, as well as increased efforts to boost our local high streets.â€?

At Flames of Sheffield we offer a complete project managed service from start to finish for a customer and are happy to take responsibility for installing and certificating a solid fuel stove or fire/fireplace. The current Solid Fuel Stove Package we have available has proved very popular with customers, as it includes a range of 4 stoves to choose from, a relevant flue liner with a 10 Year Anti-Corrosion Guarantee, a rear chamber and front hearth and standard installation, all for £2,395”, explained Director Lee Day. FLAMES of Sheffield have helped more than 5,500+ customers with their fire, fireplace, stove and central heating needs since they first opened their doors in 2005. “Although the Autumn was a very busy time for us in terms of fires, fireplaces, stoves and central heating, as we start to come out of Winter and begin to enter Spring, it is a great time to look at having any home improvements completed, especially as we have many great offers available in our current Hot Winter Sale”, commented Senior Sales Advisor Sue Martin. There are great household savings to be made by installing an ‘A’ rated energy efficient central heating boiler, with the average saving being

of between £200-£400 per year, dependent on the new system fitted. A solid fuel stove is another great way to cut down on gas usage and, as long as the stove is DEFRA Approved and the correct fuel is used, then this again can be a great alternative to heat large areas of a home. “Many of the solid fuel stoves being used in Sheffield and the surrounding areas have almost certainly not been installed by a qualified HETAS engineer. This can lead to many problems and issues in terms of home insurance being invalidated, being incorrectly sealed and fumes leaking into a specific room(s) or building regulations visiting and insisting a stove is removed due to noncompliance.

Golf Club gets back into the swing after storms

FOR most of February, Stocksbridge Golf Club, like many others in the area, has seen extreme wet weather conditions affect competitive play.

took fourth and Sandy Murphy (13) came fifth. Competition was tough all the way down the leaderboard with the competition scratch score being equivalent to 37 points.

But the last week has been much dryer and on Saturday March 7, the Winter Cup competition got back into full flow.

Richard Hastings’ 39 points has allowed him to maintain a clear advantage in the overall Winter Cup League and he looks a strong favourite to win by the season end. Not bad for a golfer who has only just returned to Stocksbridge Golf Club after a 10 year absence.

Round six of the competition saw Dave Stringer (13) win the round with an excellent 42 points. Dave’s round was a very steady and included one birdie and 10 pars, great consistency from the mid handicap golfer. Behind him were four golfers all on 39 points and separated by their relative back nine scores. Competition leader Richard Hastings (15) nipped in for second, Cliff James (22) took third, Alan Mosley (17)

Later that day the Club celebrated the end of the 2019/ 20 Captains year of office. Steven Haigh and Alison Sedgwick handed over the reins to incoming Gents and Ladies Captains, Brian Montgomery and Helen Moffett, both pictured with the Club President.

The evening was hosted by Club President John Yeates and the members were supported by recently elected MP for the area, Miriam Cates. Miriam congratulated the club on its successful year and praised it for being, “One of the vital community assets for Stocksbridge and Deepcar.” Miriam went on to say that she looked forward to supporting the Club at future events and wished incoming Captains, Brian and Helen, “a successful year.” During the evening ceremony, attended by well over 100 members, Alison and Steven presented the cheque for their chosen charity, St lated Alison, Steven and the Club on “the fantastic achievement of Luke’s Hospice. raising over £8800 that will go Morven Keay represented the Hos- towards the vital services that the pice at the presentation and congratu- Hospice provides for people with

Ladies win by odd goal Oughtibridge WM Ladies 2-1 Woodlands Ladies

OUGHTIBRIDGE celebrated playing their first home league game in four months with a 2-1 comeback victory against Woodlands Ladies in the East Midlands Premier League. Although they dominated throughout they couldn’t convert a host of chances against a team with a game plan to sit back and rely on

the leagues top scorer, Jody Scott, to carry a threat at the other end. Sure enough it looked to have worked when mid way through the second half Oughtibridge missed a penalty to go ahead and then saw Scott put the visitors ahead with a break away goal. But skipper Kathryn Mudge shot home a loose ball to equ-

alise before Bex Shaw turned in Laura Cain’s cross for the winner. There were Impressive displays by youngsters Lorna Perry and Slovakian Nina Kovascova, which augers well for the future of the team. Next up is another home game this Sunday where Rise Park Ladies are the visitors, kick off at 2pm.

CHURCH TAKE NARROW WIN ON Saturday, Penistone Church hosted Thackley in the Toolstation NCEL Premier Division, winning through a Nathan Keightley goal on 27 minutes. The goal was enough to see Keightley awarded the Nick Firth Tiles Man of the Match. New signing Luke Stewart won the Wentworth Pewter Player of the Month.

Daren crowned Yorkshire champ A GOOD number of Penistone runners competed in the Yorkshire veterans cross country championships at a wet and boggy Longley Park in Sheffield on Sunday. Stand out performance was by Daren Nockels who claimed first place in the men’s over-50 category. Daren set off hard and managed to keep a good pace over the undulating four-lap course which was just shy of six miles in distance. His time was inside 40 minutes at 3858. Penistone lady Becky Timms came closest to achieving a podium place in the ladies over-40 category. Becky was fourth missing out on third place by just 13 seconds. There was some success on the teams front too. Penistone claimed second

placed in the ‘all to score’ over-35 men’s event with the counters being Damian Kilpin, Phil Hinchliffe, Richard Mackie, Dan Limb, Oliver Pike, Matt Coldwell and Luke McGuinness. The Penistone ‘three to count’ over-50 team finished equal third with Robin Clough and Paul Fryers making up the team alongside Daren.

at the Retford Half Marathon in 72-36. In the same race Dawn Broom finished in a time of 1-42-16 which was enough to give her a club gold standard for the half marathon distance.

PROMOTION DREAM OVER Burley 31-0 Stocksbridge

STOCKSBRIDGE Rugby bowed out of the promotion race in the latest round of the play offs, going down by 31-0 at Leeds based Burley, who have now recorded a play off double at the expense of the travelling Stocksbridge side. Still having to cope with a crippling injury list and unavailable players, Stocksbridge travelled more in hope than expectation of pulling off an unlikely victory. Despite a promising opening quarter, the visitors fell behind to a sweeping three quarter move which saw the speedy home winger cross for the opening score.

The luckless prop forward Ricky James had to be replaced due to a recurring back issue and coach Rhys Keenan entered the fray in a re-jigged front row. Despite little possession and conceding territory, Stocksbridge managed to hold firm until a tap penalty move from the Burley forwards resulted in a further score. Some impressive pressure relieving kicking by fly half Jack Spencer kept the rampant home side at bay as Stocksbridge struggled to get a foothold in the game. They conceded again just before half time, leaving the score 17-0 to Burley.

Any hope of a dramatic Stocksbridge Rugby resurgence were quickly put to bed, as some pretty weak defence allowed a try for the Burley outside centre almost from the restart.

sure to score, but was held up just short. Keenan allowed his frustrations to boil over and received a yellow card with 10 minutes in the sin bin for some choice remarks to the official.

we showed character and passion despite the result. This will help us prepare for the Spring Cup matches coming up, when we can focus on a real opportunity to win some silverware this season.”

Skipper Rowett had to be replaced by youngster Jack Martin as a precaution for a suspected broken nose, after a collision with team mate Gary Woodcock. Perhaps the home side relaxed a little, or Stocksbridge upped the pace, as they enjoyed a period of superiority and were unlucky not to score a consolation try of their own. Newton went close, as did O’Leary, and Whitaker looked

Burley crossed again towards the end of the game as the visitors visibly tired from their efforts.

Keenan offered his apologies to the squad for his sin binning. “It’s not the perfect example, I lost my cool for a moment,” he admitted.

The Man of the Match award went to Jack Spencer for a courageous and committed performance at fly half. Head Coach Keenan said afterwards: “Fair play to them, they are a better side than we are, but again

Weather permitting, Stocksbridge will host basement club Halifax Rugby at Coal Pit Lane this weekend and will be hoping for a confidence boosting win. Kick off is at 3pm and entry is free.

STEELS TASTE DEFEAT WITH LAST MINUTE GOAL STOCKSBRIDGE PARK STEELS 2 CHASETOWN 3 IN their first game for over two weeks, Stocksbridge Park Steels faced an in-form Chasetown and a last minute goal saw the visitors win at Bracken Moor for the first time ever. In a game that was affected by a heavy wind, Steels came under early pressure but the well marshalled defence coped well. In one of their first meaningful attacks, Luke Mangham pounced on a mistake from the visiting keeper to give Steels the lead. Both teams were struggling to put any passing moves together and the game was scrappy. With half time approaching, Steels gave the ball away on the edge of their box and allowed Chasetown to equalise. The second half followed a similar pattern, with the swirling wind spoiling the momentum. A poor clearance from Carney went straight to an opposing

player and this resulted in Steels going behind. To their credit, Steels didn’t let it affect them and put Chasetown under pressure. When Whitham arrived at the back post to equalise, it looked like both teams would have to settle for a point, which given the conditions would have been fair. With the game heading for the final minutes, a speculative shot which was heading wide of the goal struck Steels full back Lemons to end up in the back of the net. If Steels could have held on for a point they would have moved up to fourth in the table but as it stands they still hold on to the last play off place in fifth. This Saturday, third-placed Cleethorpes arrive at the Look Local Stadium in what should be a cracker of a game. Kick off is 3pm and your support would be much appreciated.
