Julie wins at Lads Leap

SAM Shaw was second lady overall in 33-21 on a very muddy course on the trails around Silkstone. Road runner Andrew Heppenstall donned a pair of trail shoes to put in an impressive performance to finish second overall in 29-37.

There were also age group wins for Barbara Haigh (ladies over-70), Damian Kilpin (men over-40) and Bill Phillips (men over-70). The junior race was won by Penistone’s John Halstead in 10-15, clubmate Ewan Mackie was third in 11-09. The winner of the girls junior race, Graihagh Turner, also from Penistone completed the course in 12-00.

The second championship race of the weekend was the 10 mile Thirsk road race held at the racecourse. The flat course is conducive to fast times and though it was quite windy many of the Penistone runners taking part set personal bests for the distance. First back was Gareth Cooke with an impressive seventh place in a high quality field. Gareth’s time of 53-19 was a new personal best and a club record.

Next back for Penistone was over-45 man Martin Ball who’s time of 61-43 gained him a gold standard for the distance. Third back was Robin Clough who broke the men’s over- 50 club record for the distance in 64-35.

Sam Shaw followed up her impressive Silkstone Shuffle performance with second place in the ladies over-35 category in a time of 67- 38. Bill Phillips broke the men’s over-70 club record in a time of 74-39. For Bill there was some disappointment though, despite winning his age category on the day based on ‘chip time’ by one second he was actually relegated to second place due to the other runner having a faster ‘gun’ time.

In West Yorkshire Gary Briscoe put in a fine performance to finish in second place at the Spenborough 20 mile race.

Despite the undulating nature of the course Gary’s time was a very quick 1-54-16. Charlie Skipper travelled to Stafford to take part in the Stafford half marathon. Charlie came away with an excellent time of 1-21-24. Hugh Mackie was 183rd out of 331 runners in the Intermediate boys race at the English Schools cross country at Sefton Park, Liverpool.

Nichola McNally claimed third lady overall and first in the ladies over-50 category at the Dalton Dash 10k. Nichola’s time was a very impressive 41-57. Dave Napier competed in the Oundle 20 mile race, finishing in 2-37- 01.
