Mon - Fri 8.30 am - 5.00pm Sat 8.30 am - 12.00 noon WAR MEMORIAL LADIES WIN Oughtibridge WM Ladies 3 Rise Park Ladies 0 DESPITE both teams having players unavailable in self isolation it was Oughtibridge who made the most of the FA’s reprieve of grass roots football to make it back to back home wins and move back into the top half of the East Midlands Premier League with games in hand on those above them. Both sides came close in the first half with the home team always looking the more dangerous and they finally broke the deadlock shortly before the break, Sam Woodham quickly closing down a back four guilty of overplaying to set up Laura Cain for a smart finish. The second half was much of the same, Rise Park playing on the break but the game was out of their reach with Cain guiding home her second after a good cross field move on 59 minutes. A shut out was achieved due to some stout defending from the Towns’ twins, Dionne Lawton and skipper Kathryn Mudge and the result was wrapped up as Cain completed her hat-trick with a neat left foot volley from a partially cleared corner. This week sees Oughtibridge travel to Ollerton on Thursday evening (8pm) followed by an away trip to Rise Park next Sunday, both games likely to be subject to further FA consideration of whether to suspend games at lower levels.

Sam Shaw was second lady overall in 33-21 on a very muddy course on the trails around Silkstone. Road runner Andrew Heppenstall donned a pair of trail shoes to put in an impressive performance to finish second overall in 29-37.

There were also age group wins for Barbara Haigh (ladies over-70), Damian Kilpin (men Foxhill Medical Centre over-40) and Bill Phillips (men over-70). The 160 Fox Hill Crescent Sheffield S6 1GA junior race was won by Penistone’s John HalDESPITE many events being cancelled due stead in 10-15, clubmate Ewan Mackie was to COVID-19, Penistone runners were still third in 11-09. The winner of the girls junior very active over the weekend and enjoyed a race, Graihagh Turner, also from Penistone completed the course in 12-00. good deal of success.

Closing Date – 30 March 2020

Julie Darigala competed in the Lads Leap fell race which takes place on the fells above Crowden and was triumphant as winner of the ladies race. Julie completed the 10 kilometre race in just over an hour in 61-46. Hugh Mackie also competed and a bagged a top 10 place by coming eighth in 57-20. Bernice Nixon also had a strong run to pick a win the ladies over60 age category.

The second championship race of the weekend was the 10 mile Thirsk road race held at the racecourse. The flat course is conducive to fast times and though it was quite windy many of the Penistone runners taking part set personal bests for the distance. First back was Gareth Cooke with an impressive seventh place in a high quality field. Gareth’s time of 53-19 was a new personal best and a club record.

Next back for Penistone was over-45 man There were two club championship races over Martin Ball who’s time of 61-43 gained him the weekend starting with the Silkstone Shuf- a gold standard for the distance. Third back fle trail race on Saturday. was Robin Clough who broke the men’s over50 club record for the distance in 64-35.

Sam Shaw followed up her impressive Silkstone Shuffle performance with second place in the ladies over-35 category in a time of 6738. Bill Phillips broke the men’s over-70 club record in a time of 74-39. For Bill there was some disappointment though, despite winning his age category on the day based on ‘chip time’ by one second he was actually relegated to second place due to the other runner having a faster ‘gun’ time. In West Yorkshire Gary Briscoe put in a fine performance to finish in second place at the Spenborough 20 mile race. Despite the undulating nature of the course Gary’s time was a very quick 1-54-16. Charlie Skipper travelled to Stafford to take part in the Stafford half marathon. Charlie came away with an excellent time of 1-21-24. Hugh Mackie was 183rd out of 331 runners in the Intermediate boys race at the English Schools cross country at Sefton Park, Liverpool. Nichola McNally claimed third lady overall and first in the ladies over-50 category at the Dalton Dash 10k. Nichola’s time was a very impressive 41-57. Dave Napier competed in the Oundle 20 mile race, finishing in 2-3701.
