ON Monday March 23, the Prime Minister announced a set of measures to help stop the spread of coronavirus. These measures will require us to stay at home except for limited reasons, close non-essential shops and community spaces and stop all gatherings of more than two people in public (except if they are from the same household). As coronavirus continues to spread, each and every one of us is being asked to play our part by staying at home so that our NHS has the capacity it needs to save lives. Penistone and Stocksbridge MP Miriam Cates said: “I’m doing everything I can to keep people up-to-date with the latest Government guidance and information. But the one piece of advice that I really want people to listen to is that to save lives, every single one of us, young and old, must keep our distance from one another and that means following these new instructions.”

The official advice is that if you are over 70, are pregnant, or have an underlying health condition, you are at most risk and it’s even more important

for you to stay at home. You should ask others to help with tasks such as shopping and collecting prescriptions.

Everyone else needs to follow the instructions to stay at home in line with Government instructions which will be enforced by the police and other authorities. The situation will be reviewed in three weeks. Miriam said: “This will be difficult and life will feel very strange, but following the instructions to staying at home will save lives. You may think that if you are young and healthy, the virus may affect you less seriously, but it can still affect you, and you can pass it to those most at risk, who could become extremely unwell or even die.” The response from our community has been amazing. Community groups and neighbours all coming together to help each other and to make sure that everybody has access to the things they need helping keep everyone safe. Miriam said: “I’ve spent this week on the phone to community groups, volunteers, and churches across our area in places like Stocksbridge, Grenoside,

Penistone and Oughtibridge, finding out what I can do to help. “I’ve set up a ‘Coronavirus Isolation Helpline’ on a freephone number to help people self-isolating in the Penistone and Stocksbridge constituency, people who may not have access to the internet and who don’t know where to turn for help. If this is you, please call 0800 955 4002 between 9.30am and 5pm on weekdays. My team and I will be manning the phones ready to point you to help or volunteers in your area. It’s not possible to offer face-to-face advice surgeries at the moment but if you live in the Penistone and Stocksbridge constituency and need help with your shopping, dog walking or are feeling lonely and need someone to talk to, we’re here to help.” Miriam added: “I want to thank everyone for what they are doing for our towns and villages. It is inspiring to see how our community has pulled together in a time of such uncertainty.” Please turn to page three for more information.

A HIGH Green specialist centre, charity and school for children and adults with Cerebral Palsy and motor disorders has unveiled a blueprint for a National Centre for Conductive Education. The Centre will be the home of Paces, already a specialist in Conductive Education, which was founded in 1997 in the north of Sheffield. They have today announced that they plan to build a new purpose-built home, close to Junction 33 of the M1 at Harworth Group’s Waverley development in Rotherham. A major fundraising campaign to raise £3.5 million and allow the project to move forwards is launching and, subject to planning permission and other contracts being signed, it is hoped the new build can open in September 2022. Conductive Education is a holistic package of educational support that

aims to help children and adults obtain the greatest level of independence through a range of supportive physical interventions. The new Centre, which is being specifically designed to meet the needs of the charity and school and provide a UK-hub for developments in Conductive Education, is planned to be sited within Waverley’s residential development, where Harworth has consent for nearly 4,000 homes with just under 1,000 already built. The new Centre will include: • A 64 FTE place school (creating both full time and part time SEN places – supporting up to 80 school children) and an Outreach and ‘Inreach’ programme for 0-4’s supporting 28 children. • An assisted living facility for 20 individuals - 10 adult assisted living

New CCTV issued following reported purse theft OFFICERS in Sheffield are continuing to investigate a reported purse theft from an elderly woman in the Stocksbridge area of Sheffield have released CCTV footage of a woman they believe could hold vital information. At around 12.20pm on Wednesday February 19, it is reported that a woman in her

80s was doing her shopping in the Co-op supermarket on Johnson Street, Stocksbridge. While shopping, it is believed an unknown suspect approached the elderly woman’s trolley while she wasn’t looking and stole her purse from her handbag. Bank cards from within the purse were later used to

withdraw money from cash machines. Police believe the woman pictured could hold vital information and are appealing for her, or anyone who recognises her, to get in touch. Please call 101 quoting crime reference number 14/36465/20.

Peacocks fly the nest as they’re rehomed to local primary school IT was an interesting week for Barnsley Council’s pest control team, who rehomed six peacocks to a local primary school. After the peacocks were ruffling some feathers at a property in Thurlstone, the team offered their services for free to take the birds under their wing and rehome them. Six birds were relocated to Goldthorpe Primary School, finding a home amongst other proud peacocks in the school’s farm. The birds had been causing a nuisance for Thurlstone residents, but the primary school were happy to welcome the peacocks to their farm and give them a new home amongst other feathered friends. The team set up a temporary enclosure for the animals, with bird feed inside to attract them. Once safely inside, the peacocks were collected by our team and transported to the school. The council’s pest control team have rehomed animals in the past, but this was the first time

that they had dealt with peacocks. After hatching a plan to rehome the birds, it’s safe to say that the team didn’t get in a flap, and the peacocks are now settled into their new homes. Cllr Chris Lamb, Cabinet Spokesperson for Environment and Transport, said: “It’s great that we were able to offer our pest control services to relocate these magnificent birds. The peacocks have found a welcome home at the school farm, which helps to teach pupils about the natural world in an eco-learning environment. “Rehoming these birds was a first for our team, but it was no challenge for them, with the six peacocks now safely relocated.” Barnsley Council’s pest control team offer advice and professional solutions for pests in homes or businesses. Local Notices Dog attack

My dog has now had to have several visits to the vets and has been in “house lockdown� for a week plus whilst he hopefully recovers. This is not the first time he has been attacked by dogs who owners say, “They are just been friendly or saying hello�. He is 15 years old and I am now having to seriously consider where I take him as I cannot rely on other people to act responsibly (I apologise to the numerous people who do take care and train their dogs well) but there seems to be an increasing number of people who let their dogs run riot and who have large dogs that they cannot control. The young lady whose dog attacked mine was apologetic (at the time there was no sign of blood, but my dog was limping), I later discovered he has a deep and wide puncture wound...resulting from a Rottweiler clamping his leg. Should this lady wish to come forward and donate to vet bills I will donate half of this to a local good cause, so at least something good will come out of this at a time when we are all struggling through the corona virus lockdown. Sandy had a second good round on Saturday March 21, winning the seventh round of the Club Winter Cup. Sandy’s winning total of 44 points put him clear of the field by three points. Cliff James (21) came in second with 41 points that keeps him in contention Winter Cup League. Three players then came in with 38 points, though Andrew Finney (5) took third place with a better back nine. Andrew’s round included an impressive 14 pars and a single birdie. Overall Winter Cup League leader, Richard Hastings, had by his standards, a below par round coming in with 32 points. But his overall lead remains dominant. Sunday March 22 saw a Pro’s Prize competition with Mick Hulbert (12) winning the stableford format with 40 points. Trevor Moseley (12) came in second with 39 points and then a certain relative of Mick, Ian Hulbert (14) came in third with 36 points.
