PENISTONE COMMUNITY LAUNCHES ONLINE SUPPORT PORTAL AND HELPLINE DURING PANDEMIC LOCKDOWN

A COMMUNITY support group has been set up by Penistone volunteers to provide practical help during the coronavirus pandemic lockdown.

The group Love Thy Penistone have launched a website, lovethypenistone.co.uk, which is now live. Their aim is to coordinate volunteer effort and provide vital support to the Penistone community.

In full accordance with Government guidelines, Love Thy Penistone will work with volunteers and local businesses, to offer practical help to the local community, particularly those who are the most vulnerable and at-risk. The website will offer:

• A helpline operating 8am to 8pm, manned by Penistone Round

Table and Ladies Circle, on 01226 337400 • A forum for people to stay connected and reach out to one another

• Useful practical information, e.g. local businesses who are delivering goods • Co-ordinating volunteer groups and pooling resources

Organisers promise that personal data will be safeguarded and not used by anyone other than the people you connect with. One of the group’s founders, Marc Cooling, said: “As the situation continues to evolve, there was a realisation we needed to do something bigger and mobilise rapidly. The recent Government guidelines will have a huge impact on all our daily lives, and we want to create a com-

munity hub which makes it easier to connect at this time of national crisis. “We need volunteers to get involved in this collective effort, and I’d urge anyone who can offer help, to visit our website and pledge their support. As a community we can come together and do our best to protect each other. Visit www.lovethypenistone.co.uk

NURSERY INFANT SCHOOL NOMINATED ROYD Nursery and Infant School, in Deepcar, was nominated for the National Autistic Society’s Inspirational Education Provision Award by the NHS Speech and Language Therapy Services department who were impressed by the school’s Rainbow Room which offers specialist support to those with autism. The Rainbow Room was set up three years ago when four children entered school who were on the autistic spectrum and pre-verbal – a term often used to describe autistic children who do not use spoken language. After realising a mainstream classroom would not meet their needs, staff opted to develop a more specialist teaching resource by turning a spare classroom into an autism friendly room where there is a high emphasis on alternative communication methods such as makaton – a language programme that uses symbols, signs and speech to enable people to communicate – and other visual learning approaches. Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO), Mrs

Swales, who works in the Rainbow Room, said: “We feel honoured, very proud, quite overwhelmed and humbled that somebody has actually taken the time to nominate us for the award.

“At present, we have got five children who all have complex needs, all of them at present have an Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) diagnosis and in a mainstream classroom, their needs could not be met so we decided to change what we do and set up a small provision to help meet the need of those children. “In a mainstream classroom, they are just overwhelmed; by the stimulation, by the noise, by the levels of speaking that happens that they don’t understand and they can’t communicate as effectively as some children, so we just break everything down.” Deputy Headteacher, Mr Sly, added: “As a school we were delighted to be nominated for this national award. It is really pleasing that the staffs dedication, enthusiasm and passion for making a difference to our children has been

recognised. They are highly skilled staff and we are fortunate to have them work at Royd. “As part of our recent Ofsted Her Majesty’s Inspector (HMI) highlighted that our provision for pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) is “strong” as well as comment-

ing that we are an ‘inclusive school which nurtures all pupils’. This comment continually comes up whenever we have people visit our school and is something that we take great pride in.” The annual Autism Professional Awards seek to acknowledge the outstanding contributions and achievements of in-

dividuals, teams and organisations who are making a difference to autistic people and their families and the winners were announced at a special ceremony at Birmingham Town Hall on Thursday, February 27.

Support for vulnerable people in Sheffield SHEFFIELD City Council has launched its community response for Sheffield residents. From 8.45am to 4.45pm, members of the public can call 0114 273 4567 and have the option to ask any questions or concerns relating to the current Coronavirus situation. Last week the Government launched the national scheme where approximately 1.5 million people across the UK have been identified as being vulnerable and needing to self-isolate for 12 weeks. Those who need support will get a national package of basic food and household essentials directly to their homes.

The Council is now able to support those identified in Sheffield and the wider community via the Contact Centre. Working with our city and national and local voluntary organisations, local community response teams will also speak directly to those affected, where the needs of each individual will be listened to, with action to follow. Councillor Julie Dore, Leader for Sheffield City Council, said: “Protecting and supporting the most vulnerable in the city throughout this time is our top priority. Being able to provide basic food and medicines to people will have a huge impact on their health and wellbeing, allowing them to feel assured that

they will be looked after whilst self-isolating.

for you, and will do everything we can to support those who need it.

“Your communities need you and I have been amazed at how communities have come together to support each other at this time. Through your eyes and ears and local intelligence, we have been made aware of those who most need support across our city.

“I am incredibly proud of how Sheffield has responded to this outbreak and continues to adapt to the changing situation. We’ve seen some amazing examples of community spirit and I want everyone to know that even if you’re self-isolating, you are not alone in this city.”

“The helpline is now live for those who have specific questions relating to coronavirus, please use this for whatever help you need. If you know of anyone who needs support, do not risk thinking someone else will make that phone call on their behalf. We are here

The helpline is open from 8.45am to 4.45pm Monday to Friday. Operators will provide advice, signposting and referrals to help callers resolve whatever issues they are facing.

Please don’t pat me ANY dog lover will often have a huge urge to pet a guide dog but the charity Guide Dogs for the Blind is asking people to keep their distance. Due to the outbreak of COVID-19 social distancing is even more important to protect vulnerable people. A working dog must be allowed to do its job without any distraction for the safety of both the dog and its owner. Guide Dog wear an easily recognisable harness. Guide Dogs in harness are on duty whether they are physically guiding a person or sitting at their feet. They undergo intensive training to learn complex skills and gain required attributes such as good concentration and the ability to

control the temptation to be distracted.

Distracting a working Guide Dog reduces its capacity to do what it has been trained to do, potentially putting its handler’s safety at risk. A well-intentioned pat can undo months of training, and frequent distraction can cause anxiety or serious injury for Guide Dogs and their handlers. Guide Dogs enjoy affection and playtime once its harness is off but when the harness is on, its signals to the dog that it is working and should be left alone. Local guide dog owner Heather said: “My guide dog acts as my eyes and leads me past obstacles, but like any dog he can still be tempted by distractions. Please re-

member when the harness goes on, that cute adorable dog is working and should be left alone.” Debbie Linford, Engagement Officer for Guide Dogs, said: “A lot of our guide dog owners have reported to us that their working guide dogs been distracted by some members of the public and at this time some have express concern that people are not respecting social distancing in order to pet the guide dog. The rule of thumb is always, ask before petting any dog especially a guide dog and please practice social distancing.” Please remember when the harness goes on, that cute adorable dog is working and should be left alone.

It’s not too late to make a Will... Hello, I’m Jane Bowland, your local Estate Planning Consultant of 13 years experience. I am an expert in helping people arrange their Wills, Trusts, Lasting Powers of Attorney and Pre-paid Funeral Plans. Along with my colleague Haworth Ward-Drummond we specialise in helping all kinds of people gain peace of mind by providing professional advice, but with a personal touch. We offer a FREE consultation without obligation for anybody who would like to know more about any of the following:

• Making a basic Will • Setting up Lasting Powers of Attorney • Protecting your home for future generations • Pre-paid Funeral Plans We know that planning for the future is a very personal matter. Not everyone is able or wants to travel to an appointment in town to sort out their affairs. We can visit you at a convenient time in the privacy and comfort of your own home to discuss your unique circumstances.

A visit and consultation is completely free and you are under no obligation to do anything. If you decide to make any arrangements you can be safe in the knowledge that all our professional services and work are fully insured and we are members of the Society of Will Writers, so all our clients are assured of the

highest standards of conduct at all times. All our clients (and their families) that we have helped in the past have been very happy with our services and tell us they have gained great peace of mind knowing that they have sorted everything out.

Jane came to see my parents to help them protect the family home. She really made us all feel at ease, especially my parents. We had no idea what we could do to protect Mum and Dad. Having set up trusts and Lasting Power of Attorney’s, Mum and Dad can get on with their lives without worrying, knowing everything is now in place. Thank you Jane! Mrs Boyle and family, Ecclesfield

Following yesterday’s announcement that all football leagues in the NFL are to be ended and the results expunged for this season, with this in mind it is time to look back and realise we shouldn’t let the abrupt end diminish what has been achieved this season by all of the Stocksbridge Park Steels senior sides. Our first team have had an excellent season, manager Chris Hilton accepted the reduced playing budget from the start, and put together a young and exciting squad who have had a togetherness and commitment throughout, and credit should go to them all for showing it’s not all about money

SAFER ROADS CALLS FOR EXTRA CARE SOUTH Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership (SYSRP) is encouraging all road users to do their bit to reduce the strain on the emergency services by taking extra care if they must make an essential journey. Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced new police enforcement powers in a bid to reduce levels of travel – but people will still need their cars to travel to work and to the shops. Meanwhile, some could also return to cycling – to fulfil their quota of one piece of exercise per day. Joanne Werhle, manager of SYSRP, said: “The pressure being placed on the NHS by the Coronavirus outbreak is well known and the strain is likely to get much worse in the coming weeks and months.

The hope is that it will reduce the spread of the virus by cutting down the number of people leaving their homes for non-essential travel.

“We are backing the campaign from Road Safety GB stressing to all road users the importance of taking extra care while making essential journeys. “Whether you are a driver, rider, cyclist or pedestrian we can all play our part over the coming months by only travelling when necessary, and taking extra care on every journey.

“Please stay home and stay safe and if you have to travel, please take extra care.” For more information about the work of SYSRP visit www.sysrp. co.uk

“Our key messages remain the same – drive at an appropriate speed, wear a seatbelt, always drive sober and alert and don’t use a handheld mobile phone while driving.
