LOCAL SCHOOLS HELP TO PROTECT FRONTLINE STAFF THE design technology departments of local schools have taken it upon themselves to help with the shortage of PPE equipment by assembling face guards and distributing them directly to the frontline staff that desperately need them. Jon Grifflow, a head of faculty at Chaucer school, part of the Tapton Trust told Look Local: “This all started when our head of engineering saw the designs for PPE masks online and realised that we had the kit and resources to help, Gemma Mujushi called into the trust rounded up a small volunteer production line. At the same time our colleagues at Bradfield had started up a similar workshop. PROTECTION: NHS staff with some of the masks from Bradfeld School

“Julia Delaney, our trust’s chief operating officer, started a crowdfunding project and our families were amazing; we raised £4,000 in a few days. “One of our governors helped secure resources too; Mudfords have provided us with the polypropylene we need free of charge. “While the lazer-cutter in D.T. is running hot there are other members of staff taking food hampers to the families we serve that most need them. “We are part of a family of schools and we are a community school, we are really happy to play our part in helping those that are looking after our communities.”

Stocksbridge church rolls out online worship WITH all the churches now shut because of Coronavirus, Christ Church in Stocksbridge now has online worship every Sunday at 10.45am.

Last week, for Palm Sunday, everyone had cut out and craft items to make into a diorama of the Palm Sunday story, while the service was on.

It’s not a formal church service, but the minister Rev Ian Lucraft leads a halfhour of sharing, prayers and thoughts, with some music and usually an activity for the children to do at home while the service is on.

The Minister said: “We wanted to reach out to the members and friends of the church, and to provide a short period when we could reflect together. “We call it Christ Church Together At Home and it has been remarkably effec-

tive in drawing people together. “It’s not interactive yet but many people have welcomed this local online service which belongs to the people of Stocksbridge. “On Sunday we will be sharing communion, everyone in their own homes together online.” The service can be reached on the church website at www.christchurchonline. org

Businesses ignoring restrictions forced to close under new powers SHEFFIELD City Council and South Yorkshire Police have used new enforcement powers to close two businesses that were operating outside of Government guidance, despite the current coronavirus restrictions. The new Health Protection (Coronavirus Restrictions) (England) Regulations 2020 was announced by the Government last week. Under this new legislation local au-

thorities and the police can close premises that are flouting the closure ban. The guidance has been published by the Government. Working in partnership Sheffield City Council and South Yorkshire Police will be investigating and taking enforcement action to close businesses, with the police also handling public gatherings and movement issues.

Councillor Mark Jones, Cabinet Member for Environment, Streetscene and Climate Change at Sheffield City Council said: “It’s been encouraging to see that most Sheffielders are adhering to the social distancing guidelines and staying at home unless absolutely necessary. “I know this is a really difficult time for many residents and businesses, but the Government has been very

clear – stay at home. And there’s an essential reason for this, to save lives.”

People can report these issues seven days a week by emailing healthprotection@sheffield.gov.uk.

Other reports have been made to the council and South Yorkshire Police and these are being investigated.

Alternatively they can ring the citizens advice bureau who work closely with councils on consumer protection issues, Monday to Friday on 0808 2231133.

Anyone found to be operating in contravention of the new rules will face enforcement action.

Council announces £20k boost to eLibrary service for members SHEFFIELD City Council is pleased to announce that the eLibrary service has been given a £20,000 boost. This online resource, available to every Sheffield Library member, is accessible on any digital platform and is free of charge to use. Cabinet member for Culture, Parks and Leisure at Sheffield City Council, Councillor Mary Lea, said: “I am thrilled with the boost in spending on the eLibrary service at Sheffield Libraries. £20k will go a long way in building up the already excellent online service for the city. The spend could not have come at a better time with our libraries temporarily closed due to the pandemic, access to reading materials has been difficult. “With this free online resource, we encourage all library members and welcome new library members, to look at accessing the books and reading materials they usually enjoy in paper form, in a brand new way.

“With audio books and other new reading materials such as many popular e-magazine as well as a huge selection of children’s books and young adult titles for teens, we believe there will be something for everyone to enjoy from the comfort of their own homes. “We hope this helps to highlight this fantastic resource to everyone and allows us to promote a different route for people to access the books they love. Made up of South Yorkshire’s private sector, business bodies, universities, trade unions, local authorities and community groups, the South Yorkshire COVID-19 Response Group will meet regularly to make sure that everything is being done to make sure the region emerges as strong as it possibly can from the crisis. It will be responsible for: • Providing a South Yorkshire-wide perspective on the impact of COVID19 on the region’s economy and society, and agree actions to support workers, businesses and communities. • Developing and lobbying for a single set of

asks of Government, key partners and industry to ensure South Yorkshire has what it needs to recover from COVID-19. • Communicating with one voice to the public, workers and businesses across the region, so they are well-informed of how the region is addressing challenges presented by the Coronavirus and planning for the future. The Group’s first meeting took place on Thursday (April 2) and discussed: • The need for flexibility over Government funding to support the economy, so South Yorkshire can direct resources to address local challenges. • Business access to finance from Government-backed Coronavirus support schemes and the banking sector. • Concerns about social distancing in South Yorkshire’s warehousing

and distribution sectors, following the Mayor’s letter to the Government about the employer practices. • How to support businesses to adapt, helping them innovate and diversify their way out of the crisis. • Support for the charity and voluntary sector, where finances are under strain. The Group agreed to work together and establish a plan to support South Yorkshire’s economic recovery. It pledged to showcase the contribution the region’s businesses are making to help the national effort to tackle Coronavirus, such as the production of ventilators and equipment for the NHS by manufacturers and medical technology companies. Mayor of Sheffield City Region, Dan Jarvis, said: “The Coronavirus is the greatest public health crisis

we have faced, and it poses a massive challenge to our economy. I am working around the clock to keep our economy afloat and make sure South Yorkshire has what it needs to respond to the pandemic. “I know people in South Yorkshire are resilient, but we must explore every option to support our communities, jobs and businesses. That’s why I have convened the region’s leading institutions to plan our response and ensure we are doing everything we can to help the region now and for the future. “There will be tough days ahead, but I am determined we come out of this crisis strongly and when the worst is over, we build a brighter, prosperous future for South Yorkshire. By working together, we can make that happen for people living and working here.”

THE Waggon & Horses in Langsett will be 200 years old in 2028. It’s seen many changes during these two centuries but nothing like the current Corvid-19 crisis. Even during World War Two, the previous owners, Ma & Billy Green, managed famously to serve ham and eggs to the hungry, ration-weary visitors to Langsett. For almost five decades the pub has been in the capable hands of the Battye family and the sisters Vanda and Rachel are trying their level best to keep the business going during this time, when we are rightly being asked to stay at home, for the sake of the community, for the health of the whole nation. “We closed down completely after a Sunday swamped by visitors to Langsett. We served takeaway food and beer, and while we managed the social distancing and the safety of customers and staff the volume of visitors was not something we wished to encourage, so we closed our garden as well. Closing the doors was a sad

thing to do,” said Rachel Battye the chef of the family. “But we’d been doing takeaway pies for many years and our regulars were calling to see if we were still doing them, so we looked into how we could do this safely for us and our customers.” Vanda, Rachel’s sister explains, “We set up a WhatsApp order line, the pies are made to order and placed in our entrance where customers can come and pick them up. Very soon, we hope to be able to deliver in the immediate area. “We’re also doing two pint containers of beer, while stocks last, so that might be a big draw! At the moment we have meat and potato, steak, chicken and homity pies all served with mushy peas and our own pickled red cabbage.” But that’s not all! For over 20 years the Waggon & Horses has been bringing people together to enjoy films at the inn, where they have hosted a modest film festival, programming short

films made locally, nationally and internationally; it’s youngest film maker was five, the oldest 82. And now they have made the films available online. Visit www.langsettinn.co.uk to find out more. “People are stuck at home, of course they’ve got Netflix and iPlayer, but watching films made by people from your own community about where you live is really important, it sends a positive message about who we are, our place in the world,” says Tim Copsey, Vanda’s husband. “Some of the most popular films we showed were made by Vixon Films of Stocksbridge Steel Works, local lads telling stories about the area, with a great jazz soundtrack played by The imperial Jazz band, one of its members Mike Shore was a well known local jazz musician and played with his band throughout the 70s at the Battye Family’s pub.” So the Waggon & Horses may be closed at the moment but the kitchen is well and truly open.

Care home staff thanked with packages STAFF at Country Court’s care homes in Sheffield will receive a ‘care package’ consisting of over 20 items including food, drink and basic provisions to help with day to day life during the Covid-19 pandemic. Staff at Belmont House Care & Nursing Home in Stocksbridge and Abbey Grange Care & Nursing Home in Sheffield will all receive a care package. The company operates 32 care homes in total with over 2000 staff, all of whom will receive the packages as a thanks for their work caring for the some of the most vulnerable people in society. The packages, which include items such as toilet roll, dried and tinned goods and hand sanitiser, have been arranged courtesy of the Kachra family, own-

ers of the Country Court group, after seeing their staff struggle to the get the provisions they needed. With homes situated as far south as Brighton and as far north as York, it has proved a big operation to ensure all staff are looked after. A team of volunteers from the group’s head office, together with the owners of Elevate fitness studio based close by, are spending several days sorting and packing the boxes which will be delivered directly to each care home for staff to take home and share with their families. Country Court CEO Alykhan Kachra said: “These are very challenging times for everyone in our homes. Coping with the unprecedented changes to everyday life is difficult enough and we have been humbled by the great strength people have

shown turning up to the workplace and taking on the additional responsibility of keeping our residents safe every single day.” He added: “As the pressure on buying everyday goods has increased, we see our teams across the company struggling to strike a balance between delivering their part in the overall care service and adapting at home. We hope that this will go some way to making life a little bit easier for them.” Chairman of Country Court, Abdul Kachra said: “We are a family business and our staff are very much part of our extended family. We wanted to do something to acknowledge all of them for all the hard work, compassion and dedication that they show every day in our homes.”

He insists he is recovering, although he fears partner Anna Natascha Ă–hlin Hoe is displaying symptoms of the virus, along with her daughter Liva. Pedersen has not had contact with his children Mikkeline and Mikkel since falling ill.
