V.E. DAY CELEBRATIONS SHOW CITY’S STEEL SPIRIT VICTORY in Europe (VE Day), held to celebrate the end of the war in Europe in 1945, was remembered with a difference this year. Planned celebrations continued in ‘stay safe’ style with the people of Sheffield being invited to pay their respects and say thank you to the millions who lost their lives in the Second World War. The Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Councillor Tony Downing, marked the occasion on Friday in his ‘Tribute to the millions’ speech and Leader of the Council, Councillor Julie Dore, paid tribute with the words of ‘Cry for Peace’. Video memories of those who remember the war were played as local veterans shared their stories of their part in the war and what it was like and lo-

cal councillors, who were young children at the beginning of the war, shared some of their memories too. Music played a big part in marking the day. No VE celebration is complete without ‘We’ll Meet Again’ and this was performed by Rebecca Lambert from Sheffield City Opera. Members of the City of Sheffield pipe band, Jim Oakes and Chris McCarthy will play ‘Battle’s O’er’ wearing the Sheffield Tartan. All of these recordings were played from Friday and over the weekend on social media and are available at www.sheffieldnewsroom.co.uk. PUB TURNS BLUE FOR NHS

Warning to residents after report of rogue traders in area SOUTH Yorkshire Police is warning residents in Sheffield to beware of rogue traders after three bogus tradesman conned an elderly lady out of hundreds of pounds. It is reported that on Friday May 1, the three men ‘cold called’ the 79-year-old victim on her doorstep in Stocksbridge and offered to do some gardening work for her. They agreed a price, but about half an hour later knocked on her door again and became intimidating and aggressive, demanding an additional £400 for machinery and materials.

THE Wortley Arms pub was lit up blue for Thursday’s applause for the NHS last week with owner Jamie Ellis saying he wanted to show his support and give thanks. Jamie told Look Local: “I thought it was a way of showing our support and keeping spirits up. A regular, Charlie, was telling me about what

his company, The CFR Group, had done with lighting and I wanted to bring that here. “We all know a few people who work for NHS, some of my close friends worked as nurses, and we wanted to give back a little bit. It’s all we can do at the moment with us not able to open.”

Lady Rowena Montagu Stuart Wortley, head of the Wharncliffe Estate, said: “We give our full support to all of those who are working on the front line, in whatever capacity that may be, especially to some of our very own villagers who have been working so diligently throughout this pandemic.”

The victim handed over all the cash in her purse, totalling more than £500. Sheffield North West Neighbourhood Policing Team Sgt Kieran Frain said: “These three unscrupulous men have taken advantage of an elderly member of our community. “We’re providing advice and support to the victim and her

family, and investigations are ongoing into identifying those responsible. In the meantime I’d ask that local people please beware and spread the word to protect any vulnerable members of your family or community.” This scam follows another reported incident on April 21, when an elderly resident in Wharncliffe Side gave offenders £400 to clear the garden. However, after chopping down one tree the men abandoned the job and never returned. Sgt Frain added: “If you think you have been a victim of this sort of crime, please report it to Action Fraud by calling 0300 123 2040, or online at actionfraud.police.uk. “Some victims of this type of crime can feel too embarrassed to report it - but please don’t feel this way. These callous criminals are professionals, they’re experts at deceiving people. Your report will make it more difficult for them to deceive others.”

Grenoside Pantomime make a distanced video tribute as wedding has to be postponed MANY weddings have had to be postponed due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Amongst them, Grenoside Pantomime’s dame, Phil Wright, was set to marry the co-producer can cast member Kathy Allen on April 25. They have now postponed the wedding until December, but still wanted to mark their ‘Not Tying the Knot Day’ and asked friends and family to join in by posting photos on social media. Their friends at Grenoside Pantomime decided to go one step further. Tracey Blackburn, who played Granny Hawkins in this year’s production of Treasure Island, came up with the idea of doing a group video, with the cast singing along to ‘All You Need Is Love’. This was all a bit last minute, but those who were available soon launched themselves into it and within a few short hours, producer Steve Atkinson skilfully edited the clips to-

gether into a video tribute to the happy couple. The very talented Steve Eddison, who played Squire Trelawney in the group’s last production, also wrote a little poem to celebrate (if that’s the right word) Kathy and Phil ‘Not Tying the Knot’. The hilarious ditty mentions arguments about who is wearing the dress and in traditional panto style there’s lots of “Oh yes they are!” and “Oh no they’re not!” The videos can be viewed on the groups Facebook page. Many of the couple’s friends and family dressed up and posted photos raising a glass to the couple. Some also created TikToks such as Briony Colton who played Sally, catching the bouquet, with shocked Toks, fighting over catching the bouquet, boyfriend holding his head creating the buffet and enjoying the disco in the evening. in his hands. Vital bus service resumes A VITAL bus link serving Stocksbridge and Deepcar has been reinstated after MP Miriam Cates lobbied for its return. The SL1a bus, which circles the town as well as linking to the Supertram at Middlewood, was withdrawn by Stagecoach because of the coronavirus outbreak. After receiving a number of phone calls and emails from local residents who suddenly found themselves without a bus service, Mrs Cates lobbied Sheffield City Region to ask for the route to be reinstated as an urgent priority. Welcoming the announcement that buses will run again from Monday May 11,

Miriam Cates MP said: “I’m committed to improving public transport across our area, and this bus link is a vital lifeline for many residents of Stocksbridge and Deepcar who don’t drive and are unable to climb the valley’s notorious hills carrying heavy shopping. “Accessing shops and healthcare is even more important during this time of national upheaval, and I am delighted that the SL1a is back to connect people to the services they need.” The service will operate a reduced timetable of one bus every two hours during the day.

Lockdown Indoors Discs

ONE of the BBC’s longest-running and favourite national radio programmes is Desert Island Discs. The current lockdown has led a group of friends centred on Stannington, but with members in much more far-flung locations, to devise their own version.

They were inspired by the fact that aficionados of the programme who then go on to discuss it on social media often use the hashtag #DID. This led the friends to create #LID which

stands for ‘Lockdown Indoors Discs’, which they all agree is most appropriate for the times we are living in

We can’t meet each other physically, but this is one way we can show we’re still there for each other.”

Another medal for local war hero A LOCAL war hero has received a 75th anniversary commemorative medal from the Russian Embassy to thank him for his service during the Arctic Convoys of World War Two. Thomas Alfred Dickinson has featured in Look Local before, on his 100th birthday in 2018 and in August 2015, after receiving his Russian Convoy Medal aged 97. The war veteran served as a Lieutenant in the Royal Navy from 1936 to 1978 and during his latter years he was the careers officer. Although he is retired from the Royal Navy, Tom worked daily

as secretary at the Legionnaires Club in Stocksbridge from 1983 to 2017.

The convoys demonstrated the Allies commitment to helping the Soviet Union, prior to the opening of a Second Front, and tied up a substantial part of Germany’s Navy and Air Force.

More virtual success for runners

WHILST formal athletic competition remains suspended due to the Covid-19 outbreak, resourceful members of Penistone Footpath Runners continue to organise virtual socially-distanced events to help to maintain club camaraderie.

The combined time of the fastest 26.2 Penistone Footpath Runners was 2-25.49, whilst the fastest 26.2 women came home in 3:01.16. Fastest male runner was Gareth Cooke in 4-52, closely followed by junior athlete Hugh Mackie in 4-54.

The latest iteration of virtual competition came in the form of a mile challenge, designed to culminate on May 6, the 66th anniversary of Roger Bannister’s running of the historic first sub-four minute mile.

Jon Waller ran a valiant 5-01 in third. The fastest female runners was U13 athlete Graihagh Turner in 5-52. Nichola McNally (6-02) and Rachael Mayston (6-03) were also on the virtual podium.

Each club member was challenged to run a timed mile at a time and place of their choosing, whilst observing current government guidelines.
