TRIBUTES PAID TO “STALWART” COUNCILLOR

A FORMER councillor from Chapeltown has passed away. Described as a “Labour Party stalwart,” Alison Gethin passed away peacefully at home after a long illness on Monday May 11. Helen Jackson, former MP for Sheffield Hillsborough, paid tribute to Alison in a moving statement.

It reads: “Alison Gethin was a fighter. She fought for a fair deal for everyone; especially for the people of Chapeltown; she won battles to keep Chapeltown baths running, footpaths open, the nature walks area off Loundside, the advice centre, children’s services, and so much more.

“She fought for the Labour Party; organising elections, counting votes, attending meetings in the local community, in Ecclesfield Parish Council, in the old Hillsborough constituency, and recently Penistone and Stocksbridge.

“She was held in love and respect across other political parties as well. Her battles were never for herself or her own power or privilege. It was always for the common good. “Many older folk in Stannington will know of her mother, Flora Comley, and her work in Stannington. A head teacher at the infants school, equally determined

to put a fair deal for everyone at the heart of that community. “Alison also fought against cancer for years with Mick, her husband, by her side as it tried and kept failing to suppress her energy and determination. “Before Christmas when she was very poorly I went to see her not long before the General Election. “I shall hold on until the results are through”, she said – “and then there’s Christmas!” We shall miss her.” Alison leaves behind her husband Mick, devoted son Peter and his family, and daughter Elizabeth.

ECO AWARD FOR SCHOOL ROYD Nursery Infant School have been successful in achieving the EcoSchools Green Award. The Eco-Schools Green Flag is an internationally recognised award and celebrates excellence in environmental action and learning. Class teacher Miss Rawding commented: “I work closely with Mrs Heatchote who has a team of children that are our ‘Eco Warriors’ who then roll out projects for the whole school to take part in. Our Eco projects help to empower the children at Royd, raises their environmental awareness, improves our school environment and it also creates financial savings for our school”. The Green Award is the highest possible level that a school can be awarded. In order to achieve the Green Award a school must first achieve the Bronze and Silver awards, which are selfaccredited stepping-stones along the way. Mr Sly, deputy headteacher, added: “Royd is committed to making a difference

to our children’s lives. They are the future. If we are able to empower our children to lead change within their school then hopefully this will have a positive impact at home as well as in their wider community. “I am delighted that the staff and children’s commitment to the project has been rewarded with achieving the Green Award, as they are extremely passionate about it.” Eco team leader and teaching assistant Mrs Heathcote said: “One of the projects that Royd has a huge drive on saving energy is named ‘Switch Off Fortnight’. Children monitor whether rooms that aren’t being used at playtimes and lunchtimes have things such as computer screens and lights turned off when they aren’t being used. The children really enjoy trying to catch the teachers out and telling them that they need to switch these things off. It creates quite a lot of healthy competition between the classes as they all want to win”.

KEEP CALM, KEEP CLEAN, CARRY ON! THE Easter Cross has shone the Stocksbridge for many years now and this year there were many requests from the community for the cross to be lit for an extended period as a symbol of hope during the lockdown period due to the coronavirus. Churches Together in Stocksbridge & District (CTSD), who organise this,

obtained permission for the cross to be lit until the end of April.

justgiving.com/crowdfunding/ctsdeaster-cross-2021

In preparation for Easter, the cross was found to be in desperate need of repair work. The foundations need to be made more secure and the lights also need replacing. To this end, Churches Together created a Just Giving page at https://www.

If you could help to ensure that this amazing symbol of hope continues to shine over our valleys for years to come and can make a contribution towards these repairs. Churches Together would be most grateful.

ARREST MADE IN ROGUE TRADER INVESTIGATION ON May 6, South Yorkshire Police reported that two vulnerable members of our community had been conned by rogue traders into handing over money for work that was never completed.

Following some detailed and dedicated investigative work since that report, on Monday May 18, the team at Deepcar identified and arrested a man from the Barnsley area on suspicion of four counts of Fraud by False Representation.

While the investigation continues, that man has now been released on bail with conditions that prevent him making any unsolicited visits/calls to any member of the public. There is a lot of work still to do, but the team will strive

to achieve the outcome that our victims deserve, and we will update you once we reach that stage. Please remain vigilant and look after those in our community who are more vulnerable to this criminal behaviour.

Eligible business owners urged to apply for Covid-19 support grants SHEFFIELD City Council is encouraging eligible businesses in Sheffield to apply for support grants, available to help them face the challenges of the Coronavirus pandemic. Over the past six weeks, the Council has paid out grants to over 6,700 businesses, totalling £80m. However, although over 7,000 businesses in Sheffield have already applied for the funding, which is designed to help businesses maintain their short-term cash flow during the crisis, there are still a number of eligible businesses in the city who have not yet applied. The grants are available to any businesses that are already in receipt of Small Business Rates Relief (SBRR), who will receive a one-off grant of £10,000. Support grants are also available to rate paying businesses within the retail, leisure and hospitality sectors. Businesses with a rateable value of £15,000 or less are eligible for

£10,000 while businesses with a rateable value between £15,000 and £51,000, will receive £25,000. Businesses can access the Government’s eligibility information and apply for the Support Grants directly on the Sheffield City Council website, but are urged to include their business rate account number, which can be found on the top right corner of their latest council issued business rates bill. Supplying this account number is essential in order for applications to be processed in the quickest possible time. Applications submitted to the Council are processed usually within 10 working days if all the required supporting information is provided and correct. Apply online at: https://www.sheffield.gov.uk/coronavirus-business.

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These QHHG WR EH ÂżOOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

players and staff are trying to raise money for the club. He also says that he’s making sure to keep himself fit for when football does return at some point in the future. As well as forfeiting their entire playing wage to the club for the rest of season, the players and staff at Stocksbridge they have also managed to raise around £700 for the club out of their own pockets to help keep the club going.

Without the gate takings and sponsorship deals to keep the clubs afloat, this has been a difficult time for those clubs.

“If we can give to the club, at semiprofessiwonal level, then I don’t see why other professionals can’t, Ross says.

As we see and hear the effect this pandemic has had on the professional players, it’s easy to overlook the semi-professional players, with many of them being essential workers off the pitch, such as teachers and supermarket workers keeping the nation fed.

These are players who don’t have the same advantages of a professional player, the majority of whom have their own private gyms, the latest football equipment or a large space to train in.

Ross Goodwin is a central midfielder for Stocksbridge Park Steels who currently ply their trade in the Northern South East Division.

These are ordinary people with a passion for football who rely on their daily walks and a few weights at home for their training whilst still going out to work in their day jobs.

Goodwin, who is a teacher when not playing for the club, says that the

“We have some lads working in construction, co-op and another lad delivering kitchens, Ross added. The players of Stocksbridge Park Steels are just a handful of the many semi pro players throughout the country working essential jobs and raising money for their respective clubs while finding time to train with limited resources. So, when football does return, remember there are players out there who helped the country through this difficult time so they could play again in their respective leagues. When it is deemed safe for spectators to return to the stadiums, maybe fans will think twice about going to the big money clubs and instead support their local teams and those players who have been working tirelessly to keep the country going. And maybe they will get some of the applause that the professionals have received in recent times.
