Massive Support To Keep Sacked Deepcar Club Steward In His Job By Paul Humphries

A campaign launched to save the job of a club steward who was sacked and told he and his wife and their fouryear-old granddaughter were to be evicted from their home has gained massive support. John Clayton, who returned to Sheffield two years ago to take up the position of steward in the bar of the Lowood Club in Deepcar, was sacked in May and told he and his family had to leave their flat at the club by this Friday, June 12, or be evicted. But there has been mounting anger in the village and surrounding area that John and his wife Julie were not allowed a personal hearing with the club committee and then denied the chance to go to that committee and appeal the decision to sack him. That anger has seen almost 1,000 supporters signing petitions demanding

eviction be halted and the steward given his job back. A petition of members has gained 130 signatures and demands the club postpones any action until a full emergency general meeting of club members can be held at which evidence from both sides can be put. They vehemently contest the allegations that John and his wife have not run the club properly.

Support for John and his family has received a massive boost from a local community forum. A petition on the Facebook page of the Stocksbridge, Deepcar Surrounding Area Relaxed Rules Community Forum has seen over 800 people give their support. Lowoods committee responded by issuing the following statement; “We are not evicting anyone, the domestic property at Lowood Club is known as TIED ACCOMMODATION, it is an essential part of the job and also forms part of the remunera-

tion as the Steward does not pay for Gas/Electricity/Water Rates nor Rent. Regarding making them homeless, we didn’t, John did by losing his job. If his relatives can’t help them, then due to John caring for his grandchild, the Council most certainly will. If members were allowed to get involved in disciplinary procedures it would create pure anarchy. If someone was barred by the Committee, he could get 30 mates to request a special meeting and reverse the decision. Members can, of course, propose a vote of no confidence in the Committee and if passed the Committee would resign.â€? Lowoods committee full statement can be found on this weeks letters page. The eviction is due to take place at Lowood Club this Friday morning.

HOLLIN BUSK UPDATE: Planning Application 17/04673/OUT By: FRIENDS OF HOLLIN BUSK

Sheffield Planning Department has told us of its intention to bring the Hollin Busk planning application to the Planning Committee in the near future possibly on 14 July at 2 pm. Friends of Hollin Busk (FOHB) are keeping in regular communication with the Planning Department as we know there is big local concern about this application. The application was submitted in 2017 by DLP on behalf of Hallam Land Management. Earlier this year DLP reported a change to the original plan reducing the number of dwellings from 93 to 85. However, as with everything else they have submitted, this is an outline planning application to determine the size of the plot (unchanged) and the access arrangements. Everything else is just an indication of what a future developer might submit in a full planning application. Because of the current COVID19 restrictions the Planning Committee now meets online via Zoom in a virtual committee room. This will have a big impact on our (lack of a) presence

at the committee meeting. Local people want to gather outside the Town Hall and pack out the Committee Room – but this will no longer be possible. To address this, FOHB are planning a publicity campaign to raise the profile and leave the members of the Planning Committee in no doubt about the high level of local feeling about this application. We also intend to ask for an increased number of local representatives to speak at the Zoom Planning Committee. Members of the public can watch the proceedings of the Planning Committee on Zoom. Access details are given in the meeting agenda on the planning website. There are now more than 600 objections on the Planning Portal. If you have not already objected and wish to do so, there is still time to place on objection by visiting http://planningapps. sheffield.gov.uk or put your comments in writing to the Planning Department at Howden House, 1 Union Street. S1 2SH. The Planning Application reference is

17/04673/OUT or search for Hollin Busk. Keep an eye on our Facebook page Friends of Hollin Busk. You can also contact us at f.o.h.b@talktalk.net.

The land at Hollin Busk is a large and integral part of the countryside prominent in local views and providing an important visual break between Stocksbridge, Deepcar and Bolsterstone. Its rural character is

greatly valued by our community and there is no need to develop it as new housing is being developed on large browfield and infill sites in the Valley.

Covid-19 trials to begin in Sheffield Volunteers needed The University of Sheffield and Sheffield Teaching Hospitals are taking part in a major national research trial investigating how well a potential new vaccine could protect against COVID-19. The pioneering study will assess how well a new vaccine developed by Oxford University, known as ChAdOx1 nCoV-19, can generate an effective immune response against COVID19 in a wide range of people. The trial, which is being run in partnership with Sheffield Teachings Hospitals and many of the health and social care organisations across the City, is aiming to recruit over 1,000 healthy volunteers who have a Sheffield postcode to take part in the research. Many of the volunteers work in frontline roles and are at higher risk of being exposed to COVID-19.

Dr Tom Darton, a Florey Advanced Clinical Fellow at the University of Sheffield and Honorary Consultant in Infectious Diseases at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals explained: “People taking part in the trial will be randomised to receive a single dose of either the ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 or a licensed meningitis vaccine (MenACWY) which will be used as a ‘control’ for comparison.

“The study will take up to a year to complete, with participants attending the clinic at the Royal Hallamshire up to eight times for assessment and blood tests to check their health and to look at their immune responses to the vaccine. Many of us working on this study have been caring for patients with COVID-19 since cases were first detected in the UK back in February, and so we are delighted

to now be able to contribute to this crucial stage of vaccine development and disease prevention efforts. Our work builds on the ongoing efforts by the Trust and University, which has already provided new insights into the science, diagnosis and new therapeutics for those affected by the pandemic.” Professor Simon Heller, Director of Research and Development at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: “We are delighted to be at the forefront of the national effort to test this potential new vaccine for COVID-19 in Sheffield. For more information about the trial and how to get involved visit https://covid19vaccinetrial.co.uk/ participate-trial or email: email sth. cov002@nhs.ne

Businesses urged to be aware of Legionella risk when reopening Sheffield City Council is asking all businesses that have been closed during lockdown to take action to mitigate the risks of Legionella bacteria that may have built up in their water systems during the lockdown period. Legionella bacteria causes Legionnaires’ Disease which if caught can result in a serious lung infection. It is treatable however, some people may require hospitalisation and in some cases it can be fatal. The disease is more common in people aged 50+, particularly men, and smokers are at increased risk. Like Covid-19, symptoms of Legionnaires’ Disease include; a persistent bad cough, difficulties breathing, severe chest pain, a high temperature and feeling hot and/or shivery. Legionella bacteria can develop in underused water systems, and as many businesses have been closed for an extended period of time during the pandemic, it is essential that the necessary steps are taken to assess the risk to make sure they are safe to reopen. The businesses deemed to be most at risk are those where there is the potential for direct exposure from Legionella bacteria to staff and customers via water sources – for example in gym and hotel showers, hairdressers and beauty salons. These businesses have been contacted by Sheffield City Council to support them in ensuring that health and safety standards are met before they reopen. This will include the Council arranging obtaining and testing samples from their water systems for Legionella. All businesses are being asked to follow their risk assessments and water safety plans to ensure that they flush their systems before reopening.

Rescue call outs up by 362.5% Since the Government COVID-19 lockdown policy changes on Sunday 10th May the Peak District Mountain Rescue Organisation (PDMRO) have seen a significant rise in the number of callouts for their volunteers. The teams from Buxton, Derby, Edale, Glossop, Kinder, Oldham, and Woodhead along with Derbyshire Cave Rescue Organisation have been called ThirtySeven times from 18th May - 31st May 2020 (inclusive) compared with only eight callouts for the same period in 2019, an increase of 362.5%. The callouts have included 5 missing vulnerable person searches (three deceased), walkers with lower leg injuries, benighted walkers, unexploded ordnance from world-war II, injured Mountain Bikers, three climbing accidents (one fatal). These incidents have been dealt with in partnership with other

emergency services including Police, Fire, Ambulance, Air Ambulance, Army and the Peak District National Park Rangers.

All Mountain Rescue Teams in England and Wales are made up entirely of unpaid volunteers who receive no Government funding and rely entirely on the donations of the public. Working to industry standards for Search and Rescue in the UK, during the COVID-19 pandemic the teams are also having to include the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to protect against the risk of infection. This added burden means the addition of extra layers of clothing and equipment, making an already difficult job more challenging. As the lockdown measures ease further the teams will be able to start re-instating training and business meetings which along with

more callouts will add to their commitments for the coming months. However many fundraising opportunities have already been cancelled and more will still not be able to go ahead in the future. You can help PDMRO and it’s teams by planning your outings; limiting the risks taken; taking enough provisions including map, compass and torches; wearing the right attire such as footwear and weatherappropriate clothing; not using open flames, BBQs or discarding used cigarette ends in the countryside; finding your local teams and following them on social media for the latest advice in your area, and of course consider donating to help them continue to provide their services throughout the year. If you require Mountain Rescue in an emergency, dial 999 or 112 and ask for the Police, then Mountain Rescue

Sheffield mourns loss of renowned industrialist A leading Sheffield industrialist has passed away following a short illness, leaving a historic legacy for the city. Peter Birtles (73) became synonymous with the city's most famous engineering company, Sheffield Forgemasters, where he spent most of his working life tackling roles ranging from Production Director through to Managing Director of the business. In 2005, Peter served as Non-Executive Director at the firm, partnering former Chief Executive, Graham Honeyman, and Chairman, Tony Pedder, in a bold management buyout which rescued the company from administration to secure its future as an independentlyowned, technologydriven manufacturer. David Bond, CEO at Sheffield Forgemasters, said: “Our thoughts are very much with Peter's family at this sad time. He was an integral part of the Sheffield story, committing his working life to the en-

gineering and steel industry and he will forever be an important part of this company's history.”

Peter was born in Sheffield in 1946, educated at High Storrs Grammar School, the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University. He graduated in metallurgy and subsequently trained in general management.

Virtual Festival launches Music Awards Although the scheduled Valley Music Festival 2020 is a casualty of the Covid pandemic, the organisers are determined to continue to support young people in the valley.

On Saturday June 13th, the weekend of the postponed event, they will be presenting a virtual festival ‘Performing in Lockdown’ to launch the Valley Music Festival Sponsorship Award Scheme for 2020 -21. Last year, festival audiences and partners helped raise over £2200 to provide music lessons for four young people and to support music making in local schools. This year the festival team are again planning to provide individual sponsorship awards to another group

He undertook metallurgical training roles at Osborne Steels in the 1960s, moving into sales management during the 1970s and specialising in exports to the far east, knowledge he would build upon later in his career. After a series of management and production roles at Osborne Steels, Peter moved to Firth Rixon, before starting at Sheffield Forgemasters Engineering (Ltd) in 1984, becoming Managing Director of the business in 1988, taking the company to a £90 million turnover.

of young musicians who live or attend a secondary or primary school in the Stocksbridge & Penistone (S36) area. Festival Director Hilary Osborn said. ‘Our 2019 - 20 Sponsorship Awards scheme has proved to be a great success and last year’s winners are making fantastic progress. The valley has an amazing history of community music making. With all the uncertainty this summer we feel that it is even more important that we continue to support young people’s access to music teaching’ The virtual concert will feature video performances from some of the 300 local musicians who in normal times would have been on stage at the planned

event. Performers will include Waldershelf Singers, Jim Darnill, No Identity, Peter Fearnley, and the Branching Out Dance group. There are special video features from Bolsterstone Male Voice Choir & Deepcar St John’s Primary and last year’s Sponsorship Award winners Frances Holmes, Grace Hansonn & Flynn Rogers will all be performing. The event will be hosted by Sheffield singer and songwriter Shaun Doane and will be available on the Valley Music Festival You Tube channel on Saturday June 13th from 2pm. Bolsterstone Male Voice choir secretary and festival committee member Rob Firth said: “It’s a great shame that our third

annual festival has had to be postponed but this online event shows that there is great deal of spirit surrounding the festival and we look forward to being back next summer.”

Full details of the Virtual Festival and the Awards scheme are on the Valley Music Festival Facebook page and their brand new website www.Valley Music Festival.co.uk. The virtual event will also coincide with the launch a Just Giving page www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/valleymusic-festival for people wishing to support the festival team’s fundraising for promising local musicians.

Your Letters SCHOOLS RE-OPENING DEBATE Dear Look Local In Look Local last week Miriam Cates MP says she is ‘disappointed’ that Sheffield City Council is not instructing schools to open more widely until June 15. I hope she is also directing this towards her own government. Disappointing doesn’t actually come close to describing one of the world’s worst records for governments dealing with covid 19. After every disappointing aspect of their response are circles of people dealing with sickness and death that could have been significantly reduced by better government. One of her valid reasons to be concerned about extending school opening restrictions is that this may ‘widen the attainment gap for disadvantaged children’. Could I ask, if this is her concern, why did she join the Conservatives? Their squeeze on education spending over a decade has done so much more damage than the two weeks of a more cautious approach to opening schools. If the government had not botched their response at so many vital points schools could well have been fully open by now. Perhaps the most important thing the government needs to be effective is our trust. This is falling fast at a time of life or death. We urgently need a new government of national unity. Peter Morton

SCHOOLS What a shame that Miriam Cate wishes to interfere in the politics of neighbouring constituencies and criticise Sheffield council for delaying the opening of schools. I certainly do believe that the sooner the schools are able to return the better BUT it must be safe. Unfortunately all the data that is being used by the government to make this decision is based on national data or politics. What I would like to see is comparisons and data broken down to enable informed decisions about whether Sheffield has met the criteria of the 5 tests. The last data I looked at showed that the infection rate per 100,000 in sheffield was significantly higher than the national average(440.7 compared to 275.6 for England) I am sure that the local council has access to far more data than me and it could be that they are taking a sensible decision and that Barnsley which is also above the average is making the wrong decision. Perhaps m/s Cates would be so kind as to provide the data to show it is now safe for the schools in Sheffield to open. Alistair Nicoll

LOWOOD PETITION The comment below is taken from the 2009 audited accounts, can you imagine Brian Firth wanting to take over a club that was in thousands of pounds of debt, and have the rest of us join him. That doesn’t actually sound like the Committee we hear about on Facebook, considering we paid off all the debts, had a new roof fitted, bought a 90inch TV, replaced the old cellar cooling system with an energy efficient one and we have approximately £100,000 in the bank and our prize in the last few days for Brian Firth and Brian Grundill was having their cars ‘keyed’. Thanks guys/gals? A coincidence?

“These conditions, along with the other matters explained in note 1 to the financial statement, indicate the existence of a material uncertainty which may cast significant doubt about the club’s ability to continue as a going concern.” We are not evicting anyone, the domestic property at Lowood Club is known as TIED ACCOMMODATION, it is an essential part of the job and also forms part of the remuneration as the Steward does not pay for Gas/ Electricity/Water Rates nor Rent. Regarding making them homeless, we didn’t, John did by losing his job. If his relatives can’t help them, then due to John caring for his grandchild, the Council almost certainly will. If members were allowed to get involved in disciplinary procedures it would create pure anarchy. If someone was barred by the Committee, he could get 30 mates to request a special meeting and reverse the decision. Members can, of course, propose a vote of no confidence in the Committee and if passed the Committee would resign. With regard to the locked disabled toilet, it was recommended by the Police when the committee sought their advice about preventing drug dealers/users locking themselves in the disabled toilet thus preventing real disabled members from using it. The company that helps us deal with disciplinary procedures was hired on the 6th October 2015, long before John came to the club. Thanks for bringing this subject into the public domain because some of us ‘oldies’ don’t use Facebook and we did want to respond to the comments that we were informed of, but of course not in such vile terms as we have been subjected to. Regards, LOWOOD COMMITTEE.

Supertram link bus Dear Editor Stagecoach has now managed, under cover of COVID-19, to make the worst possible public transport service for Stocksbridge/Deepcar. We’re used to each successive announcement from Stagecoach changing things from bad to worse, but this? Never in the history of our local public transport has Stocksbridge/Deepcar been deprived of any through service to Sheffield. I’d doubt that in the history of public transport generally has an urban area the size of Stocksbridge/Deepcar been deprived of any through service to its nearby city parent. Not content to force passengers pointlessly to break and thereby delay the journey to the city centre to have to wait for the White Elephant on tracks at Middlewood, alternatively forcing passengers to go round-the-houses upand-down-dale on a wild dogleg high above Oughtibridge to Worrall and Wisewood (and down a road completely unsuitable for buses, Dykes Hall Road) as the through option ... Stagecoach has now combined both forms of abusing its passengers into one bigger inconvenience and greater cost into the antibargain. We are now taken round-the-houses up-and-down-dale AND made to wait for the white elephant on tracks, just at Hillsborough rather than Middlewood. And I take it the ridiculously early last bus and reduced frequency are further serious

Hello Miriam

have received news this week that our local bus service is again going to be devastated by ridiculous changes making life harder for all.

Many thanks, Sarah Fowler Chief executive, Peak District National Park

Local people are fuming about the changes as this again limits what is already a very poor service . It seems the tram link will be withdrawn and buses running on a much reduced basis. Given you seem enthusiastic about public transport, what do you intend to do about this ridiculous situation? If stagecoach does not want to serve this community the contract should be taken from them and given to a provider who supports local people. These companies have for years alienated the people in this area.

Fires are devastating to our treasured Peak District landscapes – and all too often they can be started through carelessness. In recent days and weeks, organisations and individuals across the Peak District have been involved in tackling incidents involving disposable BBQs on an almost daily basis. That is why we are now asking all retailers within the Peak District National Park and along its boundaries, to voluntarily suspend disposable BBQ units from sale with immediate effect. We welcome the decision of more than a dozen local retailers who have already taken this proactive step, and hope that more of our Peak District businesses are willing to work together to safeguard our countryside and communities. 1000km of walking and cycling routes for Sheffield The Sheffield City Region has published an ambitious plan to create a network of more than 620miles of accessible walking and cycling routes across South Yorkshire to enable people to leave their cars at home. Mayor Dan Jarvis and Active Travel Commissioner Dame Sarah Storey’s Active Travel Implementation Plan sets out how, by 2040, South Yorkshire will have a fully connected network of walking and cycling routes. The network will feature 800 safe crossings for people travelling on foot or by bike, and nearly 200 square miles of low traffic neighbourhoods, which see streets transformed into places where you can relax and play safely, with very little through traffic. £166 million has already been secured from the Transforming Cities Fund, with half allocated for active travel, but more investment is required from the Government to make Mayor Jarvis and Dame Sarah’s plans a reality.

In South Yorkshire around 40% of journeys to work that are 1km or less are currently driven in a car, with this figure rising to 64% when the distance at 5km. When it comes to commuting, just 2% of journeys to work are taken by bike and 10% on foot. More than 70% of people in South Yorkshire commute by car. By enabling active travel, it is forecasted that walking and cycling could be increased by 21% and 350% respectively, by 2040. To do this, Mayor Jarvis and Dame Sarah are committed to providing high quality, safe infrastructure which is accessible to all users, including adapted bikes and wheelchairs, and will empower local communities to codevelop ambitious future plans for walking and cycling in their neighbourhood. To find out more about the Active Travel programme, head to sheffieldcityregion.org.uk/cyclewalkscr.

Interested in creating bespoke designs for his clients, Luke was inspired to start his own business making custom-made footwear after he wanted himself and his shoes to stand out from the crowd.

“I truly aspire to have my own business and I’m excited to see where it can go with the support of the Enterprise Team, the Prince’s Trust and my friends and family. I really feel that I can make this a success”.

Luke, 19, studying Level 3 Sport and Exercise Sciences at Barnsley College, said: “About a year ago I was looking to buy some new shoes and I really liked a particular pair, but I was put off by the fact that everyone around me was wearing them. I started to search for different models of

Works! Don’t just take our word for it: I get 2/3 enquiries per week, from my advert and 90% of them turn into jobs. Plenty of work, highly recommend to other local traders.

STEELS FUNDRAISING GATHERS

MOMENTUM

First team players to run 100k in bid to save club Stocksbridge Park Steels Chairman Graham Furness and the committee would like to pass on their thanks to everybody who has contributed to their fund-raising campaign so far.

Steels players have also contributed and are now planning a sponsored 100k run around the region. A first team player said “As a team us players wanted to give something back to the club. We have decided to aim to run 100k in a day on Saturday 20th June to raise money for the club that is struggling in these difficult times.

Park Steels began the campaign after seeing all their income streams stop when the country went into lock down due to the covid 19 epidemic. Along with their sponsorship deals, Steels also lost several fundraising events including the pre-season friendlies against local football league clubs.Â

The players are going to start their journey at Chesterfield making stops at Sheffield, Rotherham, Doncaster and Barnsley on the way before finishing the route at the home of Stockbridge Park Steel; Bracken Moor.

At the start of May a crowdfunding page was started and we had an auction for a rare Sheffield Wednesday shirt which was presented to successful bidder Nick Levitt last week.

Former chairman and junior section president Allen Bethel have also

taken it upon himself to raise funds around the Town towards the cause. All funds raised are going towards the high running costs of keeping the club in the football pyramid these include ground maintenance, travel costs ,training expenses, insurance etc. If you can donate and help the club please follow the links below. we are offering some rewards in return for your donations h t t p s : / / w w w. f a c e b o o k . c o m / donate/245598220038919/ (Players 100k run) https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/essential-maintenance-and-equipment
