VILLAGE HAILS HEROES WITH SCARECROW TRAIL THURGOLAND hosted a colourful scarecrow trail which attracted hundreds of visitors. With a theme of heroes, the trail organised by Rachel Marshall was a great success. There were 32 entries with many really thoughtful, fun and creative entries. Literally hundreds of locals and visitors explored the village, leaving lots of positive comments. With such a great reaction, there is already talk of repeating it next year, probably in the same weekend as Fun Day and Rachel has already said that she will be happy to organise it again. The first prize (£50) with 72 votes was Linda Cullombine’s entry of Captain Tom. Second prize (£30) with 39 votes was Rachel Marshall’s Florence Nightingale and third prize (£20) with 30 votes was Sarah Howard’s local community heroes. Ailsa Garside won £25, donated by Thurgoland Thespians, for the most correctly guessed Scarecrow Trail Map.

Security guard in court following assault A SHEFFIELD security guard has appeared before court after attacking two men, who had been on a night out at the venue he worked at. James Thomson, 37, assaulted his victims in the car park of Owlerton Stadium in January last year, leaving one of his victims with a fractured skull and a bleed on the brain. DC Thomas Ryan, investigating, said: “These two men, both in their 20s, were leaving Owlerton Stadium after a night out with their friends. “When leaving the venue, they were subjected to a violent assault by Thom-

son, which was fully captured on CCTV in the car park.

“The second victim suffered bruising and cuts to his face, jaw and neck.”

“The pair admitted they had been drinking that night; they were vulnerable and instead of looking after them and exercising his duty of care, Thomson assaulted them.

Witnesses told officers of their horror as a man who his meant to ensure the safety of the public, launched a violent attack in front of them.

“Witnesses and CCTV show he was the aggressor, confronting them as they left the stadium and punching them both in their faces. “One of the men suffered two skull fractures and a bleed on the brain, including significant swelling, all he can remember from the night is waking up in hospital.

“I am pleased that we were able to bring Thomson before the courts.” Thompson appeared before Sheffield Crown Court on July 7, he was given a 12 month sentence, suspended for two years, 30 days Rehabilitation Activity Requirement and ordered to undertake six months alcohol treatment.

LIFE THROUGH LOCKDOWN

‘LIFE Through Lockdown’ will be the new collection featured within Ecclesfield Parish Archives and they are welcoming submissions which depict this. We all know we have been living through an historical event since lockdown commenced at the end

of March due to the Coronavirus. People will look back on this for generations to come, so Ecclesfield Parish Archives are putting together a collection of photographs, videos, and other media to document such a momentous time.

They are hoping to curate a really diverse collection showing all aspects of ‘life through lockdown’ from the empty streets and empty supermarket shelves to more social photographs showing families surviving life in lockdown, homeschooling, socially distant street

parties and anything else which will give generations of the future a real feel for what life was like during the pandemic. If you have anything you would like to contribute or for more information, please contact Ecclesfield Par-

ish Council’s Community Coordinator, and archive curator Emma Mainwaring at emmamainwaring@ecclefield-pc.gov.uk You can find out moreabout the archive at https://ecclesfield-districtarchives.com/

ROTARIAN CO-ORDINATES DELIVERY OF PPE

DEEPCAR St John’s C.E. Junior School continue to excel in Physical Education (PE), Physical Activity and School Sport. As part of the annual city wide Sheffield Schools Get Active Awards 2019, Deepcar received the highly commended award in the ‘Active Girls’ category. Last week the school received the news that as part of the Sheffield Schools Get Active Awards 2020, they were crowned the winners of the ‘Upskilling Staff Award’.

DURING the present Covid 19 pandemic, Wortley Rotary Club are doing whatever they can to help people and organisations who need assistance.

on board and as of today he has arranged for the delivery of 5205 masks to the same care homes. The staff at the homes are most grateful.

They have joined forces with Seth Lilleker, who contacted the club saying he was currently furloughed and making face shields using 3D printers in his front room to be provided free of charge to NHS personnel, emergency services and care home staff.

Rotary club member John Evans told Look Local: “Our most senior Rotarian, namely the Rev Canon Lewis Atkinson, at 86 years young has since the start of Covid 19 co-ordinated delivery, all free of charge, of over 2935 face shields and 5205 cloth face masks all made by local volunteers to over 200 outlets, including care homes, doctor’s surgeries, chemists and other establishments in our local area, reaching out as far as Huddersfield, Wakefield, Barnsley, Rotherham, Sheffield and Doncaster. This number is rising daily.

The club made donations to Seth through his GoFundMe page and some members made personal donations. The club saw local care homes as the priority and club member, Rev Canon Lewis Atkinson, volunteered to be the liaison officer. Lewis was also made aware that a ladies sewing group in Dronfield were making cloth face shields for distribution free of charge to care homes so he also took this

“Lewis is a lovely man who lives in Chapeltown and is working tirelessly to make sure care homes have the PPE which we are able to help source.”

As part of the same awards ceremony it was also announced that Deepcar received the highly commended award in the ‘Outstanding School Sport Crew’ category. This award celebrates the impact that young people have on the development of PE, Physical Activity and School Sport at their school. The winning group of pupils showcase how they have a positive effect on the school in terms of decisions made, opportunities for a range of pupils and the development of competition. Mr Priest, Sports Coach at Deepcar, commented: “Deepcar St John’s CE Junior School have over 25 pupils (15%) of school participating as part of their school sports leaders team.

“They are responsible for running games and sports at lunch times ranging from refereeing to coaching athletics, cricket, mini games and lots of other physically active sessions.

Leaders proudly wearing her Sports Leaders jumper and her mum commented on how this particular role has turned her from a relatively shy girl to a confident and outgoing girl. I think this speaks volumes.”

“They have had a significant impact on getting all pupils at Deepcar involved and active in order to meet the government’s target of 60 minutes of moderate exercise every day.”

Miss Jones, Headteacher at Royd and Deepcar, added: “To be recognised in three different fields in two years at the city wide Sheffield Schools Get Active Awards showcases for the quality of education that is provided for the pupils at Deecpar.

Mr Sly, Deputy Headteacher at Royd, added: “This academic year the Sports Leaders have delivered physical activity stations for the children that attend Royd Nursery Infant School which is the school that the children attend before moving to Deepcar. “This has further strengthened the transition between both schools with the Year 2 children developing friendships with some of the Deepcar children. They are a real talented group of children and have developed our pupils confidence, wellbeing and their agility, balance and coordination - the three aims of the Key Stage 1 curriculum. “It is a really nice opportunity for us to see the children who once attended our school come back and flourish in their roles. Earlier in the academic year I saw one of the Sports

“We have extremely hardworking, dedicated and committed staff that enable pupils to access these superb opportunities. A special thank you must go to Mr Priest who oversees this particular area. The pupils take their school sports leaders role very seriously and they are extremely talented at what they do. It provides them with a range of skills such as communication and leadership. There are definitely some PE teachers in the making.” Deepcar St Johns Junior School also boasts the School Games Mark Gold award. The Mark is a national award that recognises the schools commitment to and development of competition, school sport, physical education and physical activity.

Flames burning bright after 15 years A solid fuel stove is also a very popular way to cut down on gas usage in many homes and, as long as the stove is DEFRA Approved and the correct fuel like seasoned/kiln dried timber or smokeless coal is used, then this again can be a great alternative to heat large areas of a home.

Flames of Sheffield have helped more than 5,500 customers with their fire, fireplace, stove and central heating needs since they first opened their doors in 2005. “We returned from lock-down closure on the 15th June, in-line with government guidance, and since then we have seen a steady stream of customers coming to see us that have either been referred by a family member or friend or who have seen our presence in local newspapers or via our website. As the weather is now generally milder, many of these enquiries have been to request a Central Heating survey,

as Summer and early Autumn are often an ideal time to carry out a new boiler installation.” commented Director Lee Day. There are great household savings to be made by installing an ‘A’ rated energy efficient central heating boiler, with the average saving being of between £300-£400 per year when an old conventional system is removed and a new Combi is fitted. Flames of Sheffield are able offer a different proposition to the majority of central heating installers as they operate from their Hillsborough Barracks bricks and mortar showroom, are open 7 days a week, are

not just a mobile number in a book or on the side of a van. Flames are an Accredited Installer for the entire Worcester-Bosch range of boilers and therefore offer a minimum 7 Year Parts & Labour Guarantee on all boilers and up to a 10 Year Parts & Labour Guarantee when a Greenstar Filter are installed at the same time, plus all boilers come with a 10 Year Guarantee on the Heat Exchanger. They install Combi, Conventional and System Boilers which they also give all their customers a 1 Year Guarantee on the quality of how it is installed to give ensure extra piece of mind.

“Many of the solid fuel stoves being used in Sheffield and the surrounding areas have almost certainly not been installed by a qualified HETAS engineer or signed-off by Building Control. This can lead to many problems and issues in terms of home insurance being invalidated, being incorrectly sealed and fumes leaking into the room(s) or building control visiting following a complaint about excess smoke being produced and insisting a stove is removed due to non-compliance. At Flames of Sheffield we offer a complete project managed service from start to finish for a customer and are happy to take responsibility for installing and certificating a solid fuel stove or fire/fireplace”, explained Senior Sales Advisor Sue Martin. “We at Flames Of Sheffield, truly are a local, independent heating centre and we run specially selected promotional offers during the year on a wide range of fires, fireplaces

and stoves. If a customer requires a high efficiency fire, a large amount of heat output or an electric fire with a unique flame effect, we are always able to meet their needs, plus we can often provide longer than standard guarantees on many of these fires from our established UK manufacturers”, commented Senior Sales Advisor Helen Gowling. Having firmly established themselves over the years as a local destination retailer for anyone looking for a special fire, fireplace, solid fuel stove or central heating boiler/ system, Flames Of Sheffield consistently offer customers a range of high quality products, value for money competitive pricing and a huge choice of standard and bespoke items, whilst always maintaining their very highly rated standard of customer service. Flames of Sheffield are located on the Upper Mall at Hillsborough Barracks (Morrisons) and FREE parking is available via the Langsett Road or Penistone Road entrances. Jane came to see my parents to help them protect the family home. She really made us all feel at ease, especially my parents. We had no idea what we could do to protect Mum and Dad. Having set up trusts and Lasting Power of Attorney’s, Mum and Dad can get on with their lives without worrying, knowing everything is now in place. Thank you Jane!

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These QHHG WR EH ÂżOOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

Your Letters Response to the disappointed one Without the help from the government, my son would not have been able to carry on in business. He was able to keep his 12 employees on during this pandemic through the financial assistance given from the chancellor. Last week, they all returned and following all guidelines it is getting back to near normality. It is very easy to take a cheap shot at the government from the outside. They had to make decisions which at the time had the full backing from the science and medical leaders. All countries took a different approach but if the government had ignored the advice given, there would have been widespread criticism from the media. Before the coronavirus, the country was doing very well with unemployment down at record levels and the economy going in the right direction. Let’s be positive and not be so critical. There isn’t a better country to live in than ours.

Wellbeing Corner - week three By Ged Jenkins-Omar, Best Selling Author of ‘Help with Anxiety’ available on Amazon. Hello! I hope you have had a good week? This week’s column looks at a couple of alternative tips to help relax your body and mind. With so much stress in the world and our lives, it is important to find moments in our day to relax. One I have personally been enjoying and practising since being introduced to it is Wim Hof Breathing. If you haven’t heard of Wim Hof then you should definitely check him out. The Iceman as he is also known has set all sorts of records for human endurance. He has devised his own breathing technique that has been shown to reduce stress, improve focus and create a stronger more resilient immune system amongst other benefits. His technique focuses on breathing in and out deeply and rhythmically 30 to 40 times before holding your last ex-

haled breath for between 30 seconds to three minutes. Then after that breathing in for 15 seconds before breathing out and starting the round again. I am really enjoying it and try and practice it every day. I started at 30 seconds exhaled but I am slowly but surely working my way up. If this sounds like something you might be interested in then check him out and have a look at his beginners’ videos on YouTube. There are lots of people who swear by it. A slightly more unusual practice but one with hundreds of millions of combined views on YouTube is Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response or ASMR for short. For those of you who have never heard of it before, in its purest form, it is video or audio stimulus that can make you experience low and sometimes high levels of euphoria. If triggered correctly, it can make you feel a tingling sensation in your head, neck, back and sometimes

down your body. Or for some people, it can just make them feel pleasant. For those ASMR works for it can be a great relaxant and can help to ease anxiety, stress, depression and insomnia. If you would like to try listening to some ASMR videos then head to YouTube and type in ASMR. There are thousands of videos with male and females’ voices and different sounds to choose from. Try a few of them with headphones in until you find the ones that work for you if any. I hope you have a stress-free week and if you don’t, then you can always try out these two techniques. Please note: This article is for educational purposes only and should not replace proper medical advice. If you are experiencing anxiety or any other mental health illness then please speak to your doctor.

Sports Academy to increase girls’ grassroots football BARNSLEY Sports Academy has formed a partnership with Barnsley and District Schools Football Association (FA), the Barnsley Schoolgirls Football Partnership and Barnsley Women’s FC to launch a Wildcats Football Centre. Wildcats is a FA initiative to increase girls’ participation in football. The partnership will offer girls aged five to 11 a chance to try football for the first time and provide regular opportunities to play. Playing football can help girls make friends, have fun and be active. The new agreement could open doors for female College students who are looking to get a foothold in football coaching or refereeing. Barnsley Women’s Football Club will be providing financial support for students to gain

their coaching or refereeing qualifications. Steve Gates, Director of Barnsley Women’s FC, Strategic Lead of Barnsley Schoolgirls FA Partnership and Chairperson of Barnsley and District Schools FA, said: “This is a perfect opportunity for girls who wish to try football for the first time and those wanting to play regularly will be signposted into Barnsley Women’s FC. “The sessions will take place weekly, when the College re-opens, focusing on making friends, having fun and being active through football. The sessions will be led by female College students who are aspiring to become top FA coaches and football officials. College students will be given direct access to the Barnsley Women’s Under 18 and reserves teams.”

Luke Forgione, Sports Performance and Athlete Development Coordinator at Barnsley College, added: “These opportunities do not come along often, we are very fortunate that Steve has given us the opportunity to be an official partner and we look forward to a long and mutually-beneficial partnership. “Our students now have their foot in the door with the Wildcats Centre, they just have to show they are capable of performing at the level required.” Please note the Wildcats Football Centre will remain closed until the College re-opens because of COVID-19. To register your interest or for general enquires please contact Luke Forgione by email l.forgione@barnsley. ac.uk or Steve Gates by phone 07841 511532.

O’ Sullivan wins Strathdene Trophy and Finney brothers in fine form Figures in brackets denote the players’ handicaps BROTHERS Andrew and Peter Finney are certainly enjoying their post lockdown golf. Saturday July 11 saw the first pairs competition of the season with players competing in a four ball batter ball format for the Stableford Shield, and the weather for a change was relatively calm. The course was in superb condition with fairways like carpets and the greens were fast and true. Heavy overnight rain had left the greens very receptive and the ideal conditions certainly provided for an exciting competition. This was only the second time this trophy has been awarded. Last year it was won by the Finney brothers and they were not going to relinquish the trophy without a fight. In the event they put together an amazing round of golf to amass a total of 49 points. Peter (05) started the round with an incredible six birdies on the front nine with

Andrew (04) happy to provide support as needed. A further two birdies for Peter and one for Andrew on the back nine ensured they successful defended the trophy they held from last year. Neil Elliott (13) and Richard Moore (24) must have walked off the 18th green with high hopes having scored 48 points, a score usually good enough to win this format of competition but had to settle for second place, with third place going to Jack Davies (30) and Karl Harris (20) with an excellent score of 46 points. The midweek stableford held on July 9 was won by Paul Blake (08) with 39 points beating Ian Sedgwick (13) who also scored 39 points courtesy of a better back nine. Having to settle for third place on this occasion with 38 points was the familiar name of Andrew Finney (04). For readers unfamiliar with golf 36 points is achieved by a player playing to his handicap so all these players achieved scores better than their handicap.

The Sunday cup on July 12, a stableford competition was a victory for Eddie Steele (13) with 40 points, just ahead of Karl Harris (20) with 39 points who was enjoying a good weekend after finishing third the previous day. In third place was Ian Sedgwick (12) with 37 points. The ladies competition on Sunday July 12 was a medal competition for the Strathdene Trophy. Liana O’Sullivan (07) enjoyed the sunshine and played some excellent golf to win the competition with a net 64, five shots better than her handicap with birdies at the seventh and 12th holes and five shots clear of second place Charlotte Colley (06) who scored a net 69 and also had two birdies at holes 12 and 18. Lady Captain Helen Moffett was third with a net 71. The win will see Liana’s handicap reduce to 06, just two shots above her brother Liam (04) who captains the club’s league team. A bit of family rivalry may well be evident in the next few weeks...

CHRIS HILTON SET TO CONTINUE AT STEELS STOCKSBRIDGE Park Steels have received a huge boost for next season with influential manager Chris Hilton and assistant Lee Thompson both committed to leading the Steels next season. The news comes on the back of the great news that new sponsors Eco Power Environmental have been found to ensure the club’s future. Chris has been instrumental in keeping the club at the current level, and but for the abrupt end

to last season was heading for the Northern Premier League Division One South play offs. Hilton is regarded as one of the best young managers at this level and with the experience of Thompson to support him, Steels supporters can look forward to some exciting times ahead. A number of first team players have also committed their immediate future to the club too.

So far, Joe Lumsden, Luke Mangham, Lewis Whitham, Josh Nodder, Ed Hall, Jordan Lemmon, Kurtis Turner, Michael Trench, Rob Ludlam, Ross Goodwin, Scott Ruthven, Reece Fielding, Kane Swinburn, Cameron Foulkes, Declan Slater, Clarke Greaves, John Pugh, Lee Thompson, Nenad Smiljanic and club captain Liam McFadyen are all signed up.

MOLE WORRIED ABOUT RIDERS SHEFFIELD co-owner Peter Mole is worried the sport could lose some riders because of the shutdown. Mole has backed up the comments of colleague Damien Bates in saying team changes will need to be made should the sport get the green light for August. Several riders have already taken on alternative work with no income from racing right now – and Mole fears some will keep it that way.

He said: “Team changes I would think will be required at many clubs, but plans will be in place before committing to a return to action. “We must remember riders have to make a living too and many have committed to short-term jobs outside speedway to ensure their bills and mortgages are paid “I sincerely hope as a longer-term consequence of this current crisis, we do not lose further riders for the future. Some may decide on a future in employment rather than

take the personal and financial risks of a return to the track. British Speedway bosses are keen to get permission to stage meetings with limited crowd numbers and there appears to be a feeling that time could be soon. A statement from the sport’s governing body said: “Members of the British Speedway Promoters Ltd have, in the last two weeks, been working on how our sport can work safely for competitors, officials and spectators alike. We

believe the biggest risk to riders is the natural danger element of racing motorbikes with no brakes. “Clubs have already been planning how social distance measures can be taken for spectators and again we must emphasise speedway venues rarely host capacity attendances. “Grassroots team sports inevitably include a small spectator element and we believe we are within touching distance of our sport being able to start a reduced season.
