Sgt Kirkham added: “This warrant and ultimately the sentencing of Bresnik was a result of hard work by my team but also our partners and residents. We all worked together to remove what was a huge concern for the community. “There’s no doubt that Bresnik and this setup were part of someone’s business plan, but Bresnik was fully aware of what he was doing and deserved a custodial sentence today. “I hope this result empowers people to report issues and work with us, we know this is an issue for some of our communities and we’re here to help tackle those problems.” If you suspect someone is growing cannabis in a property in your community, please call 101 or speak to Crimestoppers.
STOCKSBRIDGE SPEED CAMERA PULLS IN ALMOST £2 MILLION A SPEED camera on Stocksbridge Bypass has been revealed to be the fifth most lucrative in the UK, pulling in almost £2 million of fines. A Freedom of Information request made by The Mail shows that the camera has led to 19,607 tickets being issued to drivers resulting in £1.96m in fines. It is the only speed camera in South Yorkshire to feature in the top ten with the country’s biggest earning camera being Lea Bridge Road west in London which has issued an eye-
watering 38,234 fines raking in £3.8 million in fines. Figures show the number of speeding fines handed out has grown by more than 40 per cent between 2011 and 2018. Concerns have been raised that the primary objective of the cameras and their placement is to generate revenue. The report by Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services called for greater transparency over the use of cameras and their revenues.
It said: “Apparent unwillingness to support education over enforcement had led to suspicion among officers, including some at chief officer level, that the focus of activity was intended to increase revenue for the safety partnership. “They gave examples of some camera sites that they believed didn’t have a history of collisions or other identified vulnerabilities. Elsewhere, we were told that the reason enforcement took place at certain locations was that they were ‘good hunting grounds’, rather than because they had a history of collisions.”
