NEW SUPERMARKET SET TO GET GO-AHEAD DESPITE OBJECTIONS A NEW branch of Lidl could be coming to Chapeltown, despite hundreds of objections to the plans.

Morbaine Ltd and Ackroyd Abbott submitted plans to build eight houses and a retail food store on Thorncliffe Lane, Chapeltown. An agreement has been reached for Lidl to run the retail property should the planning get the go-ahead. And it has been recommended that it should be approved, with the final say being had at a meeting on August 4.

The proposed site of the new retail store and homes.

However, there has been strong opposition to the plan since it was first announced and now over 300 signatures have been collected over two petitions. On the planning application’s webpage, 59 objections have been lodged.

WE’RE OPEN Join or upgrade at EE Stocksbridge this month and we’ll throw in a free screen protector and phone case.

Among the concerns raised include that the area already has an oversaturation of supermarkets, and an increase in pollution, traffic and noise. However, there has also been some support for the plans with some residents welcoming a reasonably priced shopping option without the use of a car. Council officers have recommended approval subject to conditions. The report reads: “From the information submitted it is considered that the site can be developed for the uses proposed without causing significant harm to the amenities of adjacent and nearby residents or the character and appearance of the locality.”

MORE SILVERWARE FOR VARDY THE career of Jamie Vardy reached yet another milestone at the conclusion of the Premier League season as he was awarded the Golden Boot trophy. The former Stocksbridge Park Steels striker has made the headlines countless times in recent years. Having restarted his career at Bracken Moor after being released by his beloved Sheffield Wednesday, he went on to sign for Halifax Town and then Fleetwood. Vardy became the first £1 million player from non-league when he agreed terms with Leicester in 2012. But that was nothing compared to what would come for the Hillsborough man. He won promotion to the Premier League with Leicester and incredibly went on to win the league with them, spearheading the attack. He set a new record for goals in consecutive games and represented England along the way. But now, Vardy has added yet more silverware to his col-

On receiving the Golden Boot trophy, Jamie said: “Never in a million years did I ever think I would win a Premier League winners medal let alone the Golden Boot... just wow! “If this proves anything, it shows you should never ever give up on your dreams, no matter how crazy they may seem!” Leicester City manager Brendan Rogers said: “Jamie’s been outstanding for us - our Player of the Season. “He knows he can’t do it without his team-mates, but he also knows, and the team know, that they couldn’t have done it without him. CHAPELTOWN PLAYGROUND TO REOPEN CHAPELTOWN Park’s playground is one of eight to reopen this week as Sheffield City Council looks to provide play areas for the city’s children. Following the Government’s announcement that playgrounds and outdoor gyms can reopen from July 4, the council’s parks and countryside service has been working through the challenges to enable reopening safely. Colley Park, Parson Cross and Rivelin Valley will also reopen. It is planned that more playgrounds will open on a weekly basis. Outdoor play or gym equipment is usually available to the public in more than 150 open spaces in Sheffield but these were closed in line with Government restrictions to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

After completing safety inspections, the council is reopening 8 playgrounds and nearby outdoor gym facilities. The inspections were carried out to make sure these sites are safe to reopen, and some changes have been made to allow for social distancing. Regular equipment cleaning is being introduced, with some of the busier parks being cleaned daily. The council has also stated recommendations of use to encourage responsible use of facilities. From Wednesday children will be able to use the playgrounds at some of Sheffield’s most popular parks including Endcliffe, Graves, Forge Dam, Rivelin and Millhouses. The playgrounds being reopened should allow all residents some access to facilities. The measures taken include:

• Inspection across all sites to assess condition

nics and snacks should be eaten on park areas outside the playground

• Inspections to assess where equipment does not support social distancing

• Wherever possible bring your own hand sanitiser and use frequently

• Changes to support social distancing, such as removal of middle swings • Maintenance and ongoing cleaning work at sites to reopen The terms of use and recommendations are: • Wherever possible only one parent or carer should accompany their child/children to the playground • In line with Government guidance, no more than 6 people should meet in a group • No food or drink to be consumed while inside playground area. Pic-

• Wipe down equipment or touch points if you can • Talk to children about how to practice good hygiene and social distancing • Avoid visiting at busier times where possible Greg Fell, Director of Public Health in Sheffield, said: “I understand that residents are keen to start visiting playgrounds once again, and that reopening will bring many health and wellbeing benefits. “However, these areas present high risks in terms of contact. To reduce the risk of infection everyone must be responsible when using the fa-

cilities. If you want to play, follow the recommendations we’ve set out and the Government’s guidance on groups and social distancing. “The Council are cleaning playgrounds weekly to keep them clean, but we also ask that people help where they can. Look after the safety of your loved ones by washing your hands with hot water and soap or hand sanitiser where this is not possible. “Good hygiene practice is paramount for keeping yourself safe and protecting others and even more importantly, if you are poorly and think you have symptoms, however mild, please stay at home. This will help stop the spread.” Signs will be placed at each location reminding visitors about the recommendations of use.

Your Letters Bolsterstone clean-up We would like to thank Bolsterstone friends and neighbours who turned out last Saturday morning to help with a village clean-up. Despite a wet start we were well supported and it was good to get together, particularly after such a long lockdown, to work together again towards a common end. We all enjoyed the banter as well as the satisfaction of seeing a job well done – except, of course, it will all need doing again soon enough. Now we hope to have a regular and autonomous maintenance group, made up of friends and neighbours, to tackle the sad neglect of the past few years and to keep the village properly maintained again. Our next work morning is planned for Saturday August 22, 10am until 12pm. Thanks again to all who turned out. Margaret Bisatt and Frances Tivey

Thanks We would like to send our grateful thanks to Katie Travis of Stocksbridge Community Hub and her team of Volunteers for their help to us during the Lockdown period by doing our weekly shop for us. We don’t know what we would have done without them. We are very grateful and would like to thank each and every one of them for their help and support during this time. They have gone over and above what we expected and for that we can’t thank them enough. From a very grateful Deepcar couple.

VOLUNTEER PETER HITS THE RIGHT NOTES

By Ged Jenkins-Omar, Best Selling Author of ‘Help with Anxiety’ available on Amazon. Hello! I hope you have had a good week? Sometimes we can allow our thoughts to spiral out of control and this can fill us with worry and panic. If this happens to you, then there are certain tricks you can try, to stop your negative thoughts getting out of control. These are called distraction techniques and they can be used when you feel your mind becoming overwhelmingly anxious. You can use these sat at home, at work, in social situations or anywhere else for that matter. They are not a long-term solution if you are really struggling but they can help you in the moment and they are good to have in your wellbeing toolkit. The first thing to remember if you can feel yourself becoming anxious or your thoughts are spiralling out of control is to not just sit or stand there and let it happen. Do something. Do anything. A good way to remember this is the 2-minute rule. If you feel you have been worrying about something for more than 2 minutes then you can try the 54321 method. Also known as a grounding technique this simple strategy can help you to become more grounded in the present and distract your mind from any negative thoughts. To try this method, you should firstly think of, or say five things that you can see, like “I can see a picture, a wall, a TV, a pen and a tree”. Followed by four things you can touch like a ring on your hand, your phone, your hair or your jeans. Then three things you can hear like music, people talking or a TV. Then two things you can smell like some perfume or something in the fridge. Then one thing you can taste inside your mouth like what you had for lunch or saliva. If you can’t hear, smell or taste anything then just move on to the next one and repeat this method until your anxiety has calmed down. Remember that you can walk around when you use this technique to find things to help distract you from your anxiety. Another strategy you can try is memorising a list of words or things that mean something to you and saying them in your head. Perhaps you have a favourite sports team? Try learning all of the player’s names and work your way through the team saying their names in your head. Maybe it’s a recipe? Try working your way through the ingredients and how you would make the dish. Whatever it is, make it something that you genuinely like and is relatable to your life. Have a great week and I hope it is anxiety and stress-free. Please note: This article is for educational purposes only and should not replace proper medical advice. If you are experiencing anxiety or any other mental health illness then please speak to your doctor.

MUSIC lover Peter Bower is hitting all the right notes as he volunteers for St Luke’s Hospice. Peter, who lives in Oughtibridge, is part of the team supporting the St Luke’s retail team, preparing items for sale on the charity’s hugely popular eBay platform. His love of music - he plays the guitar - made him the ideal person to specialise in the many musical instruments that are donated. And even though he would normally be based at the St Luke’s Donation Centre, near Meadowhall, Peter has been able to continue his

support from home during lockdown. “I tend to specialise in musical instruments, especially guitars, identifying the makes and then making any repairs and making sure they are playable,” he explained. “I think the reason we get so many guitars is that people pick them up thinking they want to learn then decide they don’t want to play any more. “If it’s an electric guitar the first thing we do is plug it in and make sure it’s working and if it isn’t I can fix that.” Other instruments that come Peter’s way include everything from violins and

cellos to African drums, a zither and even an Australian didgeridoo! “I find it really interesting and because I have all the facilities at home, I have been able to carry on,” said Peter. “It gives me an interest but the other reason I volunteer is because my wife was a patient at St Luke’s and they looked after her fabulously so I wanted to give something back.” For a chat about St Luke’s volunteering opportunities call 0114 235 7542 or visit www.stlukeshospice.org. uk/volunteer for more information.

Brad Lawton wins the Turner/Hobson Memorial Trophy TOWARDS the end of 2018, Stocksbridge Golf Club lost two stalwart members of the club. Barrie Turner, the ever present, ever cheerful, long standing member of the club lost his brave battle against cancer and then at the beginning of December the respected and well-liked head greenkeeper, Jamie Hobson, died suddenly at home at only 48 years old. In memory of these two great gentlemen who had contributed so much to the golf club, the Turner/ Hobson Trophy was donated to the club by Barrie’s widow Eunice Turner, herself a long standing member of the club. This memorial trophy was contested for the second time last Saturday in a mixed competition for both gents and ladies and attracted a large entry of 83 competitors. Brad Lawton (18) enjoyed the conditions and produced an impressive round to score 44 points, one point ahead of Liam O’Sullivan (05) who started the round

ren Wassell and PC Faye North-Gill have learned how to search areas, direct their dogs and work together as a team.

Four of their latest recruits have graduated ‘SYP dog school’ after completing a six-week course that has put each dog and their handler through their paces.

Dog Training Manager, Sergeant Jon Hardwick explains how the dogs learn to sniff out cash, drugs and weapons, he said: “We start training the dogs to find things by hiding their favourite toy- a ball!

Over the weeks, PD Spud, PD Ruby, PD Willow and PD Buddy have learned how to sniff out cash, drugs, firearms and ammunition, while their handlers, PC Matt Aris, PC Dan Lumley, PC Dar-

new skills to the test across South Yorkshire.

“These steps build the foundations and once the dogs are sniffing items out, we include more and more.

Sgt Hardwick added: “All of the handlers and their dogs have excelled themselves during this course.

“The handlers are then taught how to conduct thorough searches, understand their dogs and work together.”

“It hasn’t been easy, there has been difficult times, but they’ve showed that the bond and relationship they all have keeps them going. Congratulations to them all.”

On July 23, the handlers and their dogs received their official certificates of their licencing and course competition. The duos will now return to their teams and put their

Barnsley College leads the way on student satisfaction BARNSLEY College has been ranked as the best South Yorkshire College for overall student satisfaction in the 2019/20 Higher Education National Student Survey. The College’s overall student satisfaction score rose from 85% in 2018/19 to 88.39%, comfortably above the national average of 82.65%.

Students reported high satisfaction levels across all areas, from teaching, learning and academic support to the learning community and student voice. Over 311,000 final year students studying higher and further education with UK universities and colleges took part in the survey which ran from 6 January to 30 April 2020, with many UK provid-

ers seeing significant falls in their overall satisfaction scores. Barnsley College is holding a virtual Open Day for people interested in studying Higher Education courses such as HNC/Ds, degrees and Higher Apprenticeships on Monday August 17. Lady captain Helen Moffett was the leading lady in the competition taking 5th place also with an excellent 41 points. The previous Thursday mid week stableford was won by Danny Farnsworth (13) with 40 points one point ahead of Andrew Finney (04), who has been scoring consistently well since the restart, on 39 points. The ladies competed in the Ladies front nine stableford on Friday July 24 with Heather Evans leading the field with 16 points. Bev Sykes was second on 15 points and Hilja O’Sullivan third with 13 points. Sunday saw the Ladies competing in two compe-

titions, the ladies Veterans Brassie (Ladies over 55 years of age) and the Ladies 2019 Stableford final. The Veterans Brassie was won by Hilja O’Sullivan (20) with 37 points continuing her success from last week, and achieving a handicap reduction to 19 as a result. Bev Sykes (27) again featured in the prizes taking second place with 32 points ahead of Heather Evans (31) in third place with 27 points. In the 2019 Stableford competition Lady Captain Helen Moffett (26) took the second prize with 33 points confirming her strong showing as the leading lady the day before in the mixed competition, and relegating Bev Sykes to third place behind the winner Hilja O’Sullivan. Nest weekend will see the gents compete in another two day event over the weekend for the Kilbride Cup with the ladies competing for the Glen Trophy.

Stocksbridge firsts in disappointing defeat as second string maintain perfect start De La Salle 112 all out (38.4 overs) Liam Grayson 3-14, Joe Hibbert 3-24 Stocksbridge 96 all out (32.3 overs) Liam Grayson 31, Dave Smith 27 WITH Stocksbridge’s first XI starting off the season with back to back away games, they made the trip across town once again, this time looking to build on last weeks victory as they locked horns with De La Salle. The game looked to be going to plan for Stocksbridge, captain Andy Hibbert won the toss and elected to field and the De La Salle batters faced early pressure. Opener bowler was first into the action remove both opening batters, thanks to catches from Jack Newton and an excellent grab from Jack Lyons. Stocksbridge were now on top and the change bowlers looked to give De La Salle no let off. Jake Vickers was first into the attack and he

quickly picked up his first wicket of the day. Liam Grayson came on at the other end and bowled excellently to rip through the middle order, Grayson ended with very good figures of 3-14 off 7 overs. Chris Pickford was brought into the attack and helped himself to a wicket, as well as also claiming a run out. Jack Newton also bowled well however didnt manage to take a wicket but also managed a run out. It was Joe Hibbert though who returned to the attack to pick up the final wicket as De La Salle were bowled out for 112. Quick mention for Dave Smith behind the stumps, who kept very well taking a catch, playing his part in two run outs and not conceding a single bye. At the halfway point Stocksbridge knew they were in the driving seat however they knew they had to bat properly and professionally to get my a tricky low total. Unfortunately, the

run chase most certainly didn’t go to plan. Matt Price edged behind from the first ball on the innings and the innings went all down hill from then. In the blink of eye, Stocksbridge found themselves in huge trouble at 38-6 with only 2 of the top 6 managing to make double figures. With Stocksbridge staring down the barrel of defeat, Liam Grayson and Dave Smith were together at the crease and the pair batted valiantly to give Stocksbridge a fighting chance. Just as Stocksbridge looking to be moving towards an unlikely victory, Grayson edged behind for 31 and the De La Salle spirits were lifted once again. The lower order offered little support to Smith who was eventually the last man to go for a resilent 27 and Stocksbridge were bowled out for a miserly 96. This meant Stocksbridge fell 16 runs short of De La Salle’s total and slumped to a disappointing defeat despite the best efforts with the ball and the Grayson-Smith partnership with the bat. Stocksbridge 189 all out (39.3 overs) Ant Siddall 40, Elliott Freeman 38, Jack Reevez 27 Coal Aston 104-7 (40 overs) Paul Hargreaves 3-18, Will Cavanagh 2-26, Jack Reeves 2-34 Next weekend sees both our sides in action again. The first XI welcome Parkhead to Bracken Moor with the second XI making the trip to Birkdale to take on Hallam.
