Sports day at Royd
THE partial closure of schools may have prevented Royd Nursery Infant School from delivering their traditional sports day, but it didn’t prevent them from providing an alternative version, taking part in the National Sports Week at Home 2020.

Royd boasts a plethora of sporting awards. It has the Sheffield Key Stage 1 Gold Sports Mark that recognises the school’s commitment to and development of competition, school sport, physical education and physical activity.
The school’s success doesn’t stop there with Royd receiving the highly commended Upskilling Staff Award 2018 and then winning the Upskilling Staff Award 2020 in conjunction with Deepcar St John’s Junior School.
Mr Sly, Deputy Headteacher of Royd, commented: “As soon as the Youth Sports Trust announced ‘National Sports Week at Home 2020,’ Royd jumped at the chance of taking part.
“Physical Education and school sport provides so many benefits such as communication skills, confidence, wellbeing to name a few. For the children that were in school it was brilliant seeing them take part in the eight challenges. The younger children really enjoyed watching the videos and then carrying out the challenges.”
Miss Jones, Headteacher of Royd and Deepcar, added: “It was great seeing the children in school carrying out the challenges and having a huge smile on their face. Unfortunately, there are obviously still pupils that aren’t in school at the moment due to the circumstances and the criteria that we have to adhere to as a school.
“Due to this we sent a letter out to these parents and carers asking them to send in photos or videos of their children completing the challenges.
“It was brilliant seeing them. All of the staff have really missed them. Whilst this was a superb alternative we look forward to welcoming all of our pupils back and continuing with our traditional sports day in the future.”
