THE people of Stocksbridge are being asked to give their views about their priorities for the future of the area, in a survey which has been launched this week to shape the ambitious Towns Fund plan. 20/05/2020 17:53
The survey is being run inside this week’s Look Local on the centre pages as well as on line through Sheffield City Council’s website and the Towns Fund website at www.welcometostocksbridge.co.uk The Towns Fund is a £3.6bn fund launched by the Government last year with the ambition of helping towns across the UK to grow, prosper and be great places to live, work and socialise. The Government has asked for proposals which will create long-term ambitious economic and social growth. The Towns Fund will play a major role in the future development, growth and success of Stocksbridge and the local community is central in helping to inform what should be in the town’s proposal. The Towns Fund Board is made of a group of local stakeholders and is co-chaired by Miriam Cates MP for Penistone and Stocksbridge and Managing Director of Dransfield Properties Mark Dransfield DL. The bid is due to be submitted in January. Mark said: “We have worked tirelessly over this last 15 years for the community to bring forward a successful and vibrant town and we would like to complete the journey that we have started by now focussing our attentions on the high street and other areas within our community which need support and enhancement.

We very much look forward to working with all the Stakeholders to make sure we deliver a town which is fit for the next 25 years and beyond and will generate substantial funds to our communities to help with all sorts of community activities in years to come. Miriam added: “The Towns Fund will play a major role in the future development, growth and success of Stocksbridge and the new opportunities this will bring. The local community is central in helping to inform what should be in the town’s proposal. “Given the challenges we have faced in our region during 2020 we have a fantastic opportunity to create real and sustainable improvements to the area for future generations. To find out more about the Stocksbridge Towns Fund visit www.welcometostocksbridge. co.uk. ‘Captain’ Tobias’s fundraising tops a staggering £150,000 as he ends his challenges – for now SEVEN months after he began fundraising hoping to raise £500, Sheffield’s ‘Captain’ Tobias Weller has brought his fundraising challenge to an end having achieved 300-times as much. The nine-year-old has caught the attention of the nation with this Marathon Challenges – walking 26.2 miles in March, April and May and running a further marathon using a race runner in June and July culminating in a Yorkshire Day finish on 1 August alongside Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill. Now, 213 days after his fundraising began, his page for donations has closed having raised an incredible £150,000 from over 6,000 supporters. The money is being split between his two favourite charities – Paces, the High Green special school where he is a pupil, and Sheffield Children’s Hospital, where he regularly visits for treatment. Tobias has Cerebral Palsy and Autism and cannot walk
or stand unaided. But, during the coronavirus lockdown, he wanted to challenge himself. He said: “Boom! I cannot believe how much money I have raised and am chuffed to bits so many people have supported me over the past few months. Thank you to everyone who has cheered me on and donated.” His mum Ruth said: “£150,000 is a massive amount of money and I am so proud of Tobias and everything he has achieved. There was no way in the world we would have predicted how much support he has had - from sporting legends to the police, our friends and family to our neighbours. I am so grateful to everyone for their help, kindness and generosity.” While Tobias has decided to end this stage of his fundraising, he insists this isn’t the end of his challenges. He has decided to take on a third marathon – this time using a new trike bought by Sheffield firm Jiraffe.
Ruth adds: “First and foremost, this is a challenge for Tobias. He is so motivated and just wants to keep going.” Tobias’s school, Paces, teaches children life-changing skills using conductive education - such as sitting, standing, walking, speaking, communication and self-care - in an environment they can have fun, develop friendships, and feel like they belong. Speaking about the £75,000 donation from Tobias from his challenges, Julie Booth, Head of Fundraising at Paces, said: “The amount of money Tobias has raised thanks to his incredible efforts is staggering. We are so grateful to him and his family for everything they have done. He’s an inspiration to us all. “The money will go towards our campaign to build a new home for Paces School allowing us to support many more children and young people in the future. It will make a huge difference.”

THREE GENERATIONS FOR WINDOW COMPANY Call 0114 283 1100

HISTORY
From humble beginnings, leaving school at I5 to start work as a tractor driver and general farm worker with wages of £20 per week back then in I975, I realised there must be more to life, so I went to work for the first double glazing company set up in the Sheffield area called Radiant Superglaze. After two years working there, learning all the skills, I decided to set up a business of my own, manufacturing double glazing in the old stables at The Coach and Horses pub in Stocksbridge. I soon moved into our existing premises on Manchester Road, Deepcar. The business quickly expanded through doing a good job, offering excellent customer service and value for money.
3 Generations: This year will be the 40th Anniversary
The company soon grew to a £2 million pound turnover that enabled me to buy my own factory and I won the Yorkshire Television Young Business Man ofthe Year Award back in I983. We are still going strong at our existing premises we bought in 1978, 42 years ago. We are a family run business, joined by my son ten years ago and hopefully his son will bejoining us in a few years time.
WHY ARE WE SO SUCCESSFUL?
I put that down to having old fashioned customer values, the customer is king at our firm, we stick to our old fashioned values, courtesy and customer service - we are customer friendly. Nothing is too much trouble for our customers. After all, it is the customer who pays our wages. When you contact us, you talk to a real person, not a computer, you don’t wait on the line trying to get through to a real person.
Latest products: Windows and doors
We are a forward looking company offering top quality ‘A’ Rated energy saving windows as standard. We are also introducing new products to satisfy our growing number of thousands of customers. 95% of our work is within a ten mile radius of Deepcar but we have travelled further on recommendation - as far as London, Liverpool, Scotland and even as far as the Isle of Man. We have thousands of satisfied customers. With our company, you get the old fashioned customer service with the most modern, up to date products. In fact, the Eurocell system we use is, without doubt, the best on the market. Ring now for a free quotation or call at our showroom to see the full range of products on display. We supply the best quality product fitted by our qualified installation engineers. We also have our own plasterer, brick layers and electrician, all qualified and professional.

Chapeltown pupils stride out for St Luke’s PUPILS at a North Sheffield Primary are taking part in their annual charity fundraising despite the current situation meaning they can’t take part in the ‘usual way’. Every year Windmill Hill Primary in Chapeltown organise and take part in fundraising activities for St Luke’s Hospice as part of a programme encouraging enterprise and philanthropy from their pupils. This year, with many of the usual fundraising activities such as bun sales out of the question, they’ve come up with another plan! Pupils are taking part in the charity’s Night Strider event, albeit striding out in the day, in their covid secure bubbles and as part of their PE lessons. Teacher Miss Crossland, who leads the charity fundraising for school each year, said: “As with everything in these difficult times we’ve had to think outside the box for our fundraising this year! “We’ve come up with getting the children to take part in Night Strider during the day. They’re all wearing bright colours rather than their usual PE kits and are really enjoying striding out. Their families can then sponsor them online.” Windmill Hill Head Teacher Mr Plant added: “St Luke’s is a fantastic charity and this year more than ever is so important to staff and pupils as they recently looked after one of our staff members. “We know that many charities are really struggling in these challenging times and we wanted to make sure we still demonstrated to our pupils the importance of the work that charities do and raising money for them.”

It’s been a long time coming, but at last, the talent contest is returning to our screens to complete the 2020 series. But before the semi-final and final can take place, viewers are being treated to a special programme featuring profiles of the eight remaining singers. The show’s been off our screens for six months, so a reminder of who they are will probably be welcomed.

We would also like to point out that the article urges “everyone in Sheffield to take part in this consultation and to make sure they have their voices heard in deciding the future of our city. Bearing in mind the six-week consultation closed two days before the article was printed then this came two months too late. Councillors Victoria Bowden, Alan Hooper and Mike Levery. West and East Ecclesfield Wards. Sheffield City Council.
Dog mess I am sick of irresponsible dog owners who do not clear up their dogs droppings. One in particular that owns a large dog that never picks up. The grass verge outside my house on Glebelands Road seems to be a popular toilet area. Be forewarned that if I see you I will pick it up for you and follow you home where it will be placed on your doorstep.

Our view is clear; in a post pandemic world which is having a significant impact on our city centre, then the focus must be on how the city centre housing strategy compliments the changing retail, leisure and entertainment requirements before looking at the protected land on the outskirts of the city. In other words, Option “A is the only way forward.

New inclusive downloadable routes BRADFIELD and Stocksbridge Walkers are Welcome groups have created a new set of eight ‘Inclusive Route’ descriptions which can be freely downloaded.
historical context. Examples include background to the 1864 Dale Dyke disaster in the Loxley Valley, and the story of the redevelopment of Fox Valley in Stocksbridge.
Covering both river valleys and moorland edge, the routes are designed to be inclusive for all, highlight many attractions, and provide information specific to the requirements of those in the community who may otherwise experience disadvantage in terms of access to the outdoors.
Kathy Wedell, who together with her son Isaac surveyed the routes and produced the descriptions, said: “Speaking as the parent of a teenager who uses a wheelchair, for Isaac to be able to get out into the wilds means everything.
With funding from the Heritage Fund through the Sheffield Lakeland Partnership, the information provided gives details about the terrain, such as gradients and camber, surfaces and seating; this together with a route map, location of accessible toilets and refreshments, and information about places and points of interest along the way. The routes also describe the heritage of the locality and provide information about their
“When just to go down the road to the local shop involves knowing in advance where the dropped kerbs are and hoping nobody has parked across them, to be able to escape to somewhere wild and beautiful is profoundly liberating. “To get a wider view, a distant horizon, to breathe the air, be in nature, hear the quietness - it’s crucial for us all, but especially for people living with conditions that mean access is not a given.
To be wild, and to be included – that is soul food. “When going anywhere with Isaac I’ve always had to visit the route ahead of time or risk disappointment/exclusion; there is a huge need not just for accessible wild places but also for detailed route descriptions like these, so people like us can be confident just to head out and enjoy them!” There are many miles of public footpaths, bridleways, green lanes and trails in the Sheffield area; however few appear to be accessible to those using wheelchairs or mobility scooters, parents with buggies or those with mobility impairment who find gates and stiles difficult to negotiate. In providing these new inclusive routes Walkers are Welcome has gone some way to overcoming such obstacles. https://bradfield-walkers.org. uk/inclusive-routes/ https://stocksbridge-walkers. org.uk/inclusive-routes/
Christmas Tree Festival turns into festive village trail GRENOSIDE’S popular Christmas Tree Festival will this year be transformed into a Christmas village trail helping people get into the festive spirit whilst still adhering to social distancing. In these uncertain times organisers of the annual event, which attracts hundreds of visitors each year, still wanted to do something that brightens up Christmas for everyone in Grenoside and beyond. Chris Levesley explains: “The event can’t be held in its usual format this year due to Covid19 restrictions, so instead we are asking the people of Grenoside to take part in the first ever ‘Grenoside Christmas Tree Trail’. Christmas is definitely not cancelled in Grenoside! “We want families and businesses to get involved by decorating and theming Christmas trees outside their premises and homes. We will create a mapped walking trail making the village the place in Sheffield to visit this December.” Grenoside Christmas Tree Trail will run for the whole of December, with voting for the public’s favourite tree from the 5th to the 13th. NHS seeks volunteers again
ROYAL Voluntary Service – the charity partnered with NHS England to deliver the NHS Volunteer Responders programme – is looking for more volunteers in Sheffield to support the NHS and your community through the winter as virus cases rise. NHS Volunteer Responders was launched in April to help communities and the NHS through the Covid-19 pandemic.
Volunteers support people to self-isolate by carrying out non-clinical tasks such as, delivering shopping or medication, providing transport to medical appointments and providing a telephone chat service to help combat loneliness and isolation. They also support local hospitals and GP practices with deliveries.
The initial response from residents of Sheffield has been phenomenal. So far there are 2956 active volunteers in Sheffield who have completed 23, 041 tasks while across the country more than
900,000 tasks have been completed by a total of 360,000 active volunteers.
But as people have returned to work, some of the original volunteers are no longer able to give as much of their time. Meanwhile, requests for our support are rising. We need more people to sign up Anyone wanting to apply to become an NHS Volunteer Responder can do so via the NHS Volunteer Responders website, following through to the ‘I want to Volunteer’ tab.
will be two main points to buy maps, priced at £2 each, over the weekend of 5th and 6th October, and voting will be completed online or by dropping a voting slip off. Entry is open to everyone in Grenoside and families or businesses can decorate a tree in their garden – either a traditional Christmas Tree bought for the trail, or an existing tree/ bush. It must be easily visible from the road. Chris added: “2020 has been a different year for everyone so we wanted to do something that everyone in the village could be involved in. Hopefully it will bring some much needed Christmas cheer and any money raised will be split between the Scout and Guide headquarters fund and the Grenoside Community Centre.” After the event all trees can be collected (minus their decorations) and will be shredded and the chippings used to improve footpaths in nearby woods. A Facebook page has been set up to promote the event and share updates - https://www.facebook.com/grenosidechristmastreefestival/

Finney wins Winter Cup round and celebrates with hole in one PETER Finney (five) romped home with a clear margin of victory in round two of Stocksbridge Golf Club’s Winter Cup. He even managed a hole in one on the par three sixth and his 41 point stableford score put him four points clear of the field for a convincing victory. His score was all the more impressive because he played in up to 40 mph winds with, at times, heavy rain. Peter finished with a gross score of 65 shots and as a result his handicap has dropped to four, one shot behind his behind his brother Andrew who is playing off three. Indeed, Andrew came second in the competition with 37 points, along with Ash Howe (8) and Lee Bowling (19). Andrew pipped the other two with a better back nine score. It has been a great summer for the Finney brothers and their good form is now carrying into the winter season. Earlier in the week the Dragon’s section competed in the third round of its Winter Cup. Sandy Murphy (13) was the overall winner with 36 points. Charlie Dale( 25) matched the same score as Sandy but lost out with a lower points score on the back nine. Thurdsay October 22 saw the nine hole Pro’s Prize stableford challenge. Neil Elliott, off an adjusted handicap of five, took first place with an impressive 21 points.

There was a second Pro’s Prize competitoin on Sunday October 25. This time, Pete Westhead (11) was victorious with a score of 39 points. On the same day the women competed in the second round of their Winter Trophy, which runs from October to March. The winner is decided at the end of the season by the most stableford points for the best three cards per player. Last week, Kath Busfield won the first round with 30 points. Round two was won by Ann Whitfield won with 25 points. Unfortunately with Sheffield now being at Tier 3 with the Covid 19 pandemic the Clubhouse has to remain closed to members and visitors, but unlike the lockdown in March the course remains open to all.

Church hit five at home PENISTONE Church hosted back-to-back games at home this week and after a 3-0 defeat to Liversedge on Wednesday, they bounced back strongly with a 5-0 win over Grimsby Borough. Kevy Tarangadzo, Paul Walker and Oliver Fearon were on target for the visitors as Liversedge claimed all three points on Wednesday. But Saturday was a positive day all round for Church as they scored five, kept a clean sheet
and welcomed 178 spectators, even with the new tier three restrictions and no away fans.
The first half was goalless but Church sprang into action 10 minutes after the restart with Luke Stewart opening the scoring. Sam Scrivens added a second just a minute later and after Jordan Coduri and Danny Howes made it 4-0, Scrivens got his second in stoppage time. Church manager Ian Richards said: “Firstly a big huge well done and congratulations to the football club for adapting to and managing the
tier three restrictions and thank you to those who came to watch under those restrictions, to have 178 with no away fans. “Secondly the pitch stood up to torrential rain and still at the end was playing true and playing well and you could see that in the football that we were playing and the football Grimsby were definitely playing in the first two thirds of the game. It made for a very entertaining football match.”

MORE ERRORS COST THE STEELS Stocksbridge PS 2-3 Newcastle Town By Adam Allcroft FIRST half mistakes cost Stocksbridge Parks Steels as they lost 3-2 to Newcastle Town. Newcastle got an early lead from the penalty spot as Ryan Mclean sent Hall the wrong way. Mclean got another when he made the most of a poor back pass from Matt Reay to score into an empty net. Reece Fielding put Stocksbridge back in the game with a bullet header but Newcastle got their two goal advantage through a poacher’s finish by Ryan Baxter. Mangham scored from close range to get the Steels back in it but Newcastle were able to hold on for the win.

TIGERS DUO END ON A HIGH SHEFFIELD’S Kyle Howarth reported no ill effects after making a successful return to competitive action post-operation on Thursday. Howarth battled his way to seven points at the National Speedway Stadium putting himself in contention for a place in the unique five-rider semi-final.
Ironically, fellow Tiger Richard Lawson also racked up seven points in qualifying but by virtue of a race win, one more than Howarth, took the final spot in the latter stages. Owlerton track specialist Lawson managed to safely navigate the last chance race-off from gate five - taking third place on the line to book his place in the Grand Final.
In a moment of history for the sport on these shores, six riders lined up from the tapes to compete for the prestigious Peter Craven Memorial Trophy. A frantic four laps followed with Lawson agonisingly missing out on a medal in fourth. Both Howarth and Lawson can now look forward to hopefully a much busier season next time around.
Stocksbridge could have taken the early initiative after two chances in the third minute. Newcastle didn’t clear an early corner and Ross Goodwin was the first on it. His volley was excellently saved by Dominic Kurasic. Kurasic was in action again 30 seconds later when Josh Nodder tried a low curler from outside of the box but the Newcastle keeper once again was able to pull off an impressive save.
Thankfully, Stocksbridge showed spirit and got right back into the game. From a corner, Nodder put in a great ball for Reece Fielding to head in. It would be his first goal of the season and had the Steels back in this game. But 10 minutes later, Newcastle got their two goal cushion back. The initial shot from Newcastle outside the box was blocked but the clearance went right to Baxter. He wasn’t going to say no to the chance and he duly finished, putting the Staffordshire side 3-1 up. Before the half ended, both sides had their moments. Kurtis Turner wasn’t too far off for Stocksbridge when his crossbody shot went just wide while Nodder had an effort deflected into the keeper’s hands. Newcastle had the better opportunities at the end, with Mclean once again causing havoc by running through the Steels defence before having his close range shot saved well by Hall. The Steels keeper could also be proud of his save from Joseph Berks who also managed to run through the back four before being denied by the keeper’s quick feet.
The Steels would then be punished at the other end of the pitch. In what would become a familiar battle throughout the game, Mclean ran at Jordan Lemon and the winger went down after a trip. This got him a penalty and Mclean stepped up to send Hall the wrong way and give Newcastle the lead.
In the second half, Stocksbridge were able to make it a game again even if there was some luck. A loose ball hit the back of Scott Ruthven’s foot and almost went in though it instead rebounded onto the post. Ruthven worked hard to collect the ball and play it back to Mangham who fired it in to make it 3-2.
Nodder would then do all he could to get Stocksbridge level, but he’d be matched by Kurasic. Firstly, Nodder’s narrow angle shot from inside the box was well saved by the keeper. Then, in a similar effort to the one he had in the third minute, Nodder’s curler was saved by Kurasic again.
Mangham got the ball in some space and after being denied a chance to run into the box, he decided to have a go instead. It wasn’t too far off from going in with Kurasic making an impressive acrobatic save to keep Newcastle in the lead.
This time though Stocksbridge fans thought a goal was coming when Luke Mangham was the first onto the parried ball. Unfortunately Kurasic made another impressive save and Stocksbridge were forced to wait for their goal. As if it wasn’t bad enough Kurasic was having a blinder for Newcastle, Stocksbridge made another mistake at the back which cost them. Matt Reay misplaced his back pass to Ed Hall and Mclean was alive to it. He took the ball and hit it into the empty net for one of the easier goals he’ll score this season.

Newcastle continued to kill the game off but Stocksbridge did have a late flurry which almost stole them a point. Firstly, Kurt Turner’s thunderbolt of a low shot went just wide. The best chance would come moments later. Fielding’s weak long range shot was spilled by Kurasic and Tom Whiting came in to try and be the debut hero. But once again Kurasic pulled off some incredible heroics to make the save and get Newcastle the win. Next Home game: WISBECH TOWN Saturday 7 November, 3pm KO
