Air Ambulance called for after woman takes a fall in Bolsterstone WOODHEAD Mountain Rescue Team were busy on Saturday with two callouts in quick succession. The first callout came in at 11.44am to assist Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust at Holly Hall near Stocksbridge. A 67-year-old female had taken a fall sustaining a left lower leg injury. Team members applied a splint to the injury before packaging the casualty for

the stretcher carry back to the road head and the waiting ambulance. The second callout came in at 1.08pm - just as team members were returning to base. A 30-year-old woman had taken a nasty fall from her horse in Bolsterstone sustaining multiple injuries including a suspected fracture dislocation of the shoulder, spinal pain and possible rib injuries.

Given the nature of the casualties injuries, a request was made for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance to attend to make sure the lady was in definitive care as soon as possible. The lady was immobilized inside a vacuum mattress to protect her injuries and prepared for the stretcher carry to air ambulance. Team members returned to base to start the decontamination process of kit and wish both casualties a speedy recovery.

Scheme to make area cleaner CHAPELTOWN’S 10,000 residents will soon be receiving a Council survey so they can detail what they like and dislike about the area they live. This will cover subjects such as fly tipping, waste, street cleanliness, green spaces, active travel, neighbourhood nuisance and safer roads. Labour councillors have developed this new initiative to make the council more responsive to local needs – and to tackle the local issue that really matter. The new scheme is called ‘Cleaner, Greener, Safer’ and it is hoped it will be rolled out across Sheffield. For the moment, the scheme is being piloted in Chapeltown and residents should be receiving their surveys in the next couple of weeks.

Speaking about the Cleaner, Greener, Safer initiative Labour Councillor Andy Bainbridge (pictured), East Ecclesfield, said: “I’m committed to improving our area and ensuring that local voices are heard. “This is why Labour have devised a scheme to help ensure that the council are responding to the needs of residents. This will be much more than words, with the results of the surveys directly informing council action - and I will hold the council to account to make sure they do. “I hope everyone receiving a survey fills this out, and that this will help lead to a cleaner, greener and safer Chapeltown.”

Stocksbridge transformation plans submitted AN ambitious ÂŁ25 million plan to regenerate Stocksbridge and transform the local area has been submitted by the local Town Deal Board for Government approval and funding. The Board was established as part of the Government's Towns Fund programme which seeks to invest in left behind areas and stimulate development and economic growth. In Stocksbridge it is chaired by local MP Miriam Cates (pictured) and businessman Mark Dransfield, and includes community groups, businesses, local councillors, Stocksbridge Town Council and Sheffield City Council. The Town Investment Plan that was submitted to the Government last week not only prioritises investments that will attract new businesses and job opportunities to Stocksbridge, but also focuses on improving local connectivity, supporting healthier lifestyles, opening up access to education and training, and promoting sustainability. Examples of projects include a new post-16 education hub at Stocksbridge

High School, redevelopment of public spaces on Manchester Road, new sports facilities at Oxley Park, improvements to walking and cycling trails along the Little Don River, investment in Stocksbridge Community Leisure Centre, and a new local bus network to serve Stocksbridge, Deepcar, and surrounding villages. Commenting on the proposals, MP for Penistone and Stocksbridge and cochair of the Town Deal Board Miriam Cates said: "This investment plan is a fantastic opportunity for Stocksbridge and Deepcar. We are focusing on levelling up opportunities here in the town and making it an even better place for everyone to live, work and enjoy. "For too long communities like Stocksbridge have not benefited from the investment seen elsewhere in the country, and that is why the Towns Fund programme is so important. These projects will benefit people across the whole of North Sheffield, not just in the town itself. It has been a pleasure working with so many people from across

Stocksbridge to put this Town Investment Plan together, and I would like to thank everyone who has taken part in the process. "When approved by the Government, our plans have the

potential to be truly transformational for Stocksbridge, as they reflect the changes that local people have been calling for for many years. I am looking forward to seeing the Towns Fund help Stocksbridge to unleash its full potential."

The plan was developed after a local consultation in Autumn 2020 that helped to identify priority areas for investment. Together it forms a comprehensive set of projects that can delivered within five years of approval and which

contribute to improving the economic and social life of Stocksbridge, Deepcar, and the surrounding villages.

In 1976 school-leaver Ian Clancy learned his trade at a local doubleglazing company before making the leap two years later of going it alone. A young enthusiastic worker Ian was described as ‘always first on site and last on site’. It wasn’t long before the hard-working Ian bought his first and current premises on Manchester Road in Deepcar, and set up his own window company Deepcar. These premises are now home to a brand new showroom featuring the latest range of products, from tiled roof system conservatories to composite doors. Early success was to follow when in 1983 Ian was named winner of Yorkshire Televisions ‘Young Enterprise - Businessman of the year’ Ian still has the very first door made by Deepcar back in 1978. Still in perfect working order, the door sits proudly at the back of the showroom, illustrating Deepcar’s pride in their humble beginnings. Ian beams “ Our aim is the same today as it was back then - we will provide the best products and best customer service.” He continues “ In today's busy world we pride ourselves in looking after you the customer and will offer the same level of service whether you are having a new conservatory or a lock fixed on your window. Ian’s two young sons Tom and Joe and daughter Alice show the same hard-working and conscientious qualities as their father. They are now helping the successful window company build on the 43 years of trading.

Tobias overwhelmed TOBIAS Weller, the inspirational Sheffield nine-year-old who caught the attention of people across the country with his Marathon Challenges, says he is “chuffed to bits” at being called an inspiration by another nineyear-old boy from the city. Tobias has Cerebral Palsy and Autism and cannot walk or stand unaided but over the past year he has raised over £150,000 for Paces, the High Green special school where he is a pupil, and Sheffield Children’s Hospital, where he regularly visits for treatment. He was named the BBC Young Unsung Hero at the December’s Sports Personality of the Year awards. Prep 3 pupils at Birkdale Prep School in Sheffield have been completing a lockdown learning project of choosing who from the city most deserves a statue – and Tobias was chosen by

Explaining why, he said: “I think you definitely deserve a statue in Sheffield because you are an inspiration to everyone, especially children. You have walked two marathons and you've raised so much money for your School and the Children's Hospital, which will help lots of children. What you have done must have been very hard, but you haven't let your age or any difficulties you face stop you.” Seeing William’s choice and design on social media, Tobias’s mum said she was blown away by the fact her son had inspired others his age. In a video message for William, Tobias said: “I was amazed to see the brilliant artwork that was created. When I saw that he had nominated me it made me feel magnificent – I was chuffed to bits! Thanks Will, you rock.” BARNSLEY College’s Wigfield Farm has been busy providing valuable animal care lessons across the world, as it could no longer host physical visits due to the pandemic. BRADFIELD PARISH COUNCIL CORONATION PARK, STATION LANE, OUGHTIBRIDGE INVITATION FOR PROPOSALS FOR A COMMERCIAL VENTURE TO PROVIDE REFRESHMENT PROVISION IN THE PARK FROM A MOBILE FACILITY.

Bradfield Parish Council as owners of Coronation Park Oughtibridge have carried out a public consultation exercise to ascertain the views of residents and visitors as to what facilities they would like to see in the park. One of the main outcomes of the consultation was a requirement for a refreshment provision. Following the consultation the Parish Council sought pre-planning application advice from Sheffield City Council with regard to the possibility of a mobile unit being located in the park. The response by Sheffield City Council was favourable. The Parish Council would like to invite proposals for a third-party commercial venture to provide non-alcoholic refreshment provision from a mobile facility to be located within Coronation Park. It must be noted that any venture would be subject to planning constraints and also operating requirements of the Parish Council. Whilst all proposals will be considered no guarantee is given that a proposal will be accepted. Proposals to be submitted in writing either by post or email, details below.

Primary School opens eco-classroom

BRADFIELD Dungworth Primary School has opened the doors to its latest £50,000 eco-classroom facility after parents in the community successfully raised funds to support the project. Forming part of Peak Edge Trusts’ wider estates management plan, it will be a multipurpose facility for use as a classroom, breakout space and library space. Its sustainable features also mean it is environmentally friendly. The new building is located on the existing school site and is intended to replace a building which was no longer fit for purpose, and was demolished in 2019.

MAC Construction Consultants were appointed on the four-week project to provide specialist Cost Management, Quantity Survey and Safety, Health and Environmental services; working alongside main construction contractor Bridge Timber which ensured there were no disturbances to the wider school site.

Paul Booth, Building Surveyor at MAC Construction Consultants said: “We’re delighted to have been involved in this project that will deliver much needed resources and facilities for the pupils in the local area, and help to ensure the long term sustainability of the school building.

“The team at MAC has a wide range of experience when it comes to the education sector and can support education providers in all aspects of effectively managing estates. “We are looking forward to working more closely with this Trust to deliver much needed condition improvement funded projects at several of its other sites in the coming months.” Bradfield Dungworth Primary School forms part of Peak Edge Trust a multiacademy trust established in 2019 located in North West Sheffield.

All Sheffield care homes for elderly offered vaccine 100% of Sheffield care homes for older adults have now been offered the covid-19 vaccination.

In Sheffield, groups of GP practices are working together in their primary care networks (PCNs) to administer the vaccine to their local communities and care homes via 15 community vaccination centres. Residents and staff in all 83 of Sheffield’s care homes for elderly people have been offered the first covid-19 vaccination. Over 90% of care home residents and over 80% of people over 80 have now been vaccinated in Sheffield. Alun Windle, Chief Nurse and Covid Vaccination Lead at NHS Sheffield Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “Primary care networks have worked really hard to get out to all care homes for elderly residents in the city and deliver the covid vaccination. As we know, elderly people are at high risk of suffering serious complications if they catch covid-19 so it is great news that all care home residents in homes for older people, and staff from the homes, have now been offered the vaccination.” Alun added: “I want to thank GPs, nurses, pharmacists and many other staff who have been working long hours and weekends to ensure some of the most vulnerable people are vaccinated and protected from this awful disease.” Marina Glaves, Registered Manager at Beechy Knoll Care Home in Sheffield, said: “We were really happy that we were able to have the residents and staff vaccinated, they are now looking forward to having their second vaccination. The team who visited to administer the vaccines were so organised and efficient, no-one was rushed they took their time explaining to every person about the vaccine. They were lovely and reassured ev-

eryone. Thank you to the team at Richmond Medical Centre.” Mrs Mary Burrow, a resident at Beechy Knoll Care Home who has had her vaccination, said: “I had the vaccine to protect my family and myself, I am very happy to have had the vaccine now, as the longer I leave it the more chance I have of becoming ill. The nurse explained about the vaccine and about the second vaccine, they were very kind and I felt reassured.” Councillor George Lindars-Hammond, Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care said: “This is a great local success story. Given how difficult the last year has been for all of us living with this awful pandemic, knowing that our most vulnerable group of people in the city has now been vaccinated is so heartening and a real achievement. Those living in care homes, their families, and friends and the carers who work with them can now feel safer and more reassured. That must feel like such a relief all round. “I recognise that meeting this milestone has only been made possible by the sheer hard work of so many people, in the NHS, the council and in our care sector. We are so thankful to everyone.” While the vaccination is a step forward in ending covid restrictions, people still need to follow social distancing and lockdown rules when they’ve been vaccinated. This is because we don’t yet know whether the vaccine will stop people from catching and passing on the virus. The vaccine is expected to reduce the risk of suffering from covid-19. Eligible patients will be contacted by the NHS when there is an appointment available for them.

dren who are currently having to home school, but who are without a device to do so. This should have been the job of any competent Government, but they have failed to act. Thankfully we have seen local leadership with the Council working in partnership with the Laptops for Kids campaign to provide 6000 laptops. This will mean every child in Sheffield can access learning - and connectivity will be funded for those without access at home. The investment into this project will be around £1.5million. This follows the successful Digital Inclusion Summit that Labour councillors hosted -which brought the council together with people throughout Sheffield to collectively address the digital divide. Digital exclusion should not be acceptable, and it’s great to see so many people coming together to make sure we no child is shut out of education. If you are without a device for home schooling, do please contact your child’s school and this will be arranged for you. Lisa Banes, Labour candidate for Stocksbridge and Upper Don

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These QHHG WR EH ÂżOOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

Love online is the norm www.looklocal.org.uk

Call 0114 283 1100

Over the past couple of decades, online dating has gone from being something that was frowned upon or considered a little kooky or even dangerous, to something that most people think is a normal way to meet a partner.

In fact, around a third of new relationships now start online, with users in their 40s and above being the most likely to have signed up to a dating website. For women in particular, the attractions of online dating often revolve around security issues and intentional dating rather than leaving things to chance. Whereas younger people are more likely to take an attitude of ‘I'll meet someone at some point’, older people are far more focused on finding a partner by actively going out and looking, rather than passively waiting for a potential mate to appear in their life. Online dating can also be a great way for shy or introverted types to meet a potential love match. The rise of online dating in the UK appears a trend which is likely to continue over the next few years, as more and more people meet their partners through this medium and success stories continue to come out. As the internet has become so much more a part of people's lives, internet dating has lost the stigma that it used to have and is now accepted as a very efficient and safe way to meet potential partners. In another 10 years' time we might all be asking not ‘How did you meet?’ but ‘What site did you meet on?’

Put Some Time in!

But there is no point in joining an online dating site if you are not proactive. You could be wasting your time if you simply put together the perfect profile and then sit back and wait for the messages to come flooding in. If you want to get back in the dating game, you must message the people who you find attractive. Don’t worry if they don’t reply - there are plenty more fish in the virtual sea. It is also important to tailor your messages. A generic copy and paste job can be detected a mile off and is insulting. Put a bit of time in and make it personal – it is much more likely to pay off. But keep it brief remember not to tell them your life story! At this stage it is advisable not to mention your ex – it is a sure sign that you’re still focused on a past relationship. Use that first message as a chance to spark their curiosity. Keep it clean, polite and to the point - and throw in a little humour if possible. After all, it is supposed to be fun!

South Yorkshire firm brings Christmas cheer to Paces DOZENS of children and adults supported by High Green charity Paces received presents from Santa before Christmas thanks to the generosity of a leading South Yorkshire business.

XPO Logistics, which has bases in Chapeltown and Grimethorpe, is a regular supporter of Paces, the specialist centre, charity and school for individuals with Cerebral Palsy and motor disorders. They funded over 50 present sacks which included festive treats, fun activities, a brand new pair of Converse trainers for Paces School pupils and an Amazon voucher for the adults. David Hall, corporate partnerships manager at Paces, said: “We are incredibly thankful to the whole team at XPO Logistics for their support. I have had the pleasure of working with them for many years and their generosity and commitment to helping and supporting charitable causes is second to none. “After the year we’d had, when they heard we were trying to spread some cheer at Christmas they jumped at the chance to get behind the campaign and provided the sponsorship we needed to make it happen. “It’s been a very difficult 12 months for everyone, so to be able to do this for our children and adults made a huge difference and we want to say a massive thank you to everyone at XPO Logistics for making sure it could happen.” Gavin Williams, managing director, supply chain – UK and Ireland, XPO Logistics, said: “2020 was an extraordinary year and our teams embraced our organisational values and rose to the challenge. We want to support the local community in any way that we can and children in need are an extremely worthy cause.”

Barnsley College addresses digital skills gap with a fully-funded course

Rapid covid testing for essential staff A RAPID Covid testing centre for essential staff who work with vulnerable people will open next month.

BARNSLEY College has launched a new course to help improve digital skills across the region.

duction of presentations and spreadsheets, as well as fundamental knowledge of IT software and security.

The fully-funded Level 2 Certificate in IT User Skills course is aimed at those aged 19 and over who need to develop their IT literacy in order to secure employment or improve their professional performance.

Abby Holmes, Programme Manager of Business, Warehousing and Logistics, the Department responsible for delivering the course, said: “A basic understanding of IT is imperative for anyone living and working in our digital age. At the moment, there are a huge number of people across Barnsley and South Yorkshire who simply do not possess those skills.

It is designed to be completed online via the Skills Network’s digital learning platform over a period of six to 10 weeks, depending on the applicant’s prior knowledge. The course has a weekly intake, which means that it is open to accept a new cohort of applicants every Monday. As a part-time programme, students need only study one day per week and they do not need to sit exams. To gain the certificate, they complete assignments for each of the five modules they work on. On completion of the course, students will have the IT skills required for the modern workplace. This includes the pro-

“By offering this course, the College is giving residents of all ages the opportunity to gain new digital skills and boost employability in the local area, as well as promoting an ethos of lifelong learning and professional development.” The arrival of this course also reflects the College’s commitment to delivering on the proposals set out in the Government’s ‘Skills for Jobs’ white paper, released earlier this month. The document sets out reforms to post-16 technical

education and training, and encourages schools and colleges to support people developing the skills needed to secure employment and improve national productivity. In response to the Government’s proposals, Yiannis Koursis, Principal and Chief Executive of Barnsley College, said:“Colleges must continue to rise to the challenge and offer solutions that drive the future economy, meet the nation’s skills gaps, and present an opportunity for real progression to students. We are addressing the digital skills gap and digital poverty, by investing in our digital offer. Barnsley College believes that every adult has the right to life-long education and training, ensuring they have the skills to succeed in the new and future economy.” To find out more about the course or to apply for a place, visit the Barnsley College website: https://www.barnsley. ac.uk/it-user. Alternatively, contact the Information Unit by emailing info@barnsley. ac.uk.

The centre, based at the English Institute of Sport Sheffield (EISS), will initially be for Council staff, private providers and third sector staff who do not have symptoms. All staff who are eligible for these tests will be contacted directly in early February and asked to test twice a week using Lateral Flow Devices (LFDs). This will either be by attending the EISS, or by accessing testing provided through the council. We are working with the government on how we can make it possible for people to test at home, once trained, so that they don’t have to visit the test centre. Staff who are already taking part in other national testing schemes will not need to participate. LFDs give a result in 30 to 60 minutes without needing to be processed in a lab. The tests require the participant to swab their own nose and/or throat. The swab is then placed in testing liquid and a line appears on the test within 30 minutes if the virus is detected. The advantage of these tests is the speedy result; the disadvantage is that the test is less accurate – for every 10 people with Covid, the LFD test is likely to give a negative result for 5 of them. However for staff who are working in close contact with vulnerable people, having an LFD test twice a week may pick up infections in staff before they develop symptoms and also pick up infections in those staff who never develop symptoms.

A positive result, however, is far more likely to be accurate. If someone tests positive, they must self-isolate immediately and stay at home for 10 days. People they live with should also self-isolate for 10 days and, if they develop symptoms, book a test online at www.nhs.uk/coronavirus or by calling 119. Greg Fell, Director of Public Health in Sheffield said: “These developments are good news for us. Preparations are moving at pace for the new testing site and for training people to do their own test. Both are a very useful addition to all of the Covid actions already in place. “Because these LFD tests are less accurate, anyone who receives a negative result must continue to take strict precautions against spreading the virus, such as keeping their distance from people they do not live with, wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) such as a face covering, ventilating closed spaces where possible and washing their hands regularly. All of these things together will make a huge difference in reducing the number of infections in Sheffield.” In March, LFD tests will be rolled out to the wider public. A mobile testing vehicle will travel around communities that are most affected by Covid. This community testing vehicle will be a onestop shop, where people who don’t have symptoms can get a Covid test, information and advice about the Covid vaccine and support to self-isolate, including financial support.

“For many of our patients, home is where they want to be cared for as it provides familiarity, comfort and reassurance. “Our care reaches people across the city, allowing us to give specialist palliative and end of life care to people in their own homes. “The difference our community care makes can be anything from helping with pain relief and stabilising medications to delivering tailored food parcels and helping patients to build their strength and feel as well as possible, to help them enjoy precious time with family and friends. “All of our care and support is without charge to those who need it but with government funding covering just 25 per cent of our running costs, we rely on sponsorship money from events like the Home Run to help us raise the remaining ÂŁ7.5million needed each year.â€? The aim is that runners will plot their own routes, set their own schedules - following all current government Coronavirus social distancing guidelines - and have completed the challenge by March 28. “So get running!â€? said Joasia. “ Complete the challenge, get all your sponsorship money collected, then sit back and wait for your medal!â€? Tigers swoop Home for title winner Run due to Polish League restrictions on other leagues, Batchelor fits the bill. The news does, however, mean Richard Lawson won't figure for the Owlerton side and is available to speak to other Premiership clubs. Said Batchelor: "I'm delighted to get the call from Sheffield and pleased to be a part of their first season back in the top level.

SHEFFIELD Tigers have moved quickly to start their 2021 team restructure with the signing of Premiership title winner Troy Batchelor, (pictured). Aussie ace Batchelor was an integral part of Swindon's glorious 2019 team which swept the board of the league and cup double but they are taking a season out due to stadium redevelopment this year. And with TruPlant Tigers looking to revamp their side through new regulations which mean the addition of a British youngster and the loss of Nicki Pedersen

"I'm just desperate to go racing again and this is a great boost for me because when Swindon first called me to say they wouldn't be racing this year I was seriously concerned I'd miss out. "But everything has fallen into place with Sheffield and I can't wait to get some laps in around there, it's been a while since I rode there last and to be honest it was quite choppy back then but I know it's different now. "I've been online and taken a look at the impressive stadium facilities too, the place looks amazing and I can't believe they've been a second tier club for so long, they should be in the top division and

I'm pleased they've made the move.

"I know how the team is shaping up and I'm excited by it, I certainly believe we have what it takes to present a major challenge in the league this year." Batchelor, like everyone, is also keeping an eye on daily news bulletins and is optimistic about the British season taking place with crowds this summer.

THE St Luke’s Hospice Community Nurses each travel an average 13 miles every two days to reach patients and provide support to families in homes across Sheffield.

"The vaccine rollout has been impressive so far although obviously we must all spare a thought for anyone who has lost a loved on during this pandemic," he said. "Speaking to Simon Stead (Tigers boss) he seems pretty confident that we are going racing this summer and I'm with him."

And that’s exactly the distance St Luke’s is asking friends and supporters to replicate in Home Run, the charity’s new March virtual fundraising event.

Sheffield have already lost Nicki Pedersen and Todd Kurtz from the 2020 side and now Lawson, with Batchelor the first new signing.

However the challenge is completed though, the sponsorship money raised will make a huge difference to people across Sheffield who have been diagnosed with a terminal illness.

The challenge is simple - just run 13 miles this March and help raise vital funds to help St Luke’s continue caring for hundreds of people across Sheffield, in their own homes. Regular runners might go the full distance in one run, others might spread the distance over a few days with shorter runs or even walks - the ideal event for people of all ages and all abilities.

“We’ve all been spending more time at home recently and this has led many people to discover a new love of running, said St Luke’s Head of Fundraising Joasia Lesniak.

Triple World Champion Pedersen said: "I have respect for and friendship with Simon Stead and Sheffield and I wish everyone all the best."

“So take on our Home Run this March to have some fun, set yourself a goal and raise much needed money for our patient care. continued on page 15
