student smashes 48hour running challenge

SAFEGUARD STOCKSBRIDGE SPECIALISED STEEL JOBS Is the title of a petition started by local man Alex Burnett and aims to highlight the strength of feeling in the local community regarding the jobs in the local steel industry in Stocksbridge. The online petition has almost 1000 signatures. The petitions originator said “I hope it might further increase awareness of the situation regarding Liberty Steel and help protect their jobs.” The link to the petition is here http://chng.it/ HfHZZ2wc.

Barnsley College Sport student, Alex Neil, has completed a colossal 48-hour running challenge to raise money for Bowel Cancer UK. Alex ran four miles every four hours over the 48-hour period, taking only short naps to recharge. The 19-year-old has raised £ 1,390 for Bowel Cancer UK, a charity close to his heart as his grandmother sadly passed away due to the disease nine years ago. After completing the final part of 4x4x48 challenge, which was devised by American ultramarathon runner David Goggins, Alex said: “I knew I wanted to do the challenge but wasn’t entirely sure as it seemed ridiculously hard, especially for someone who hasn’t run for months due to lockdown. “I found the challenge pretty fun, especially through the day knowing how far I had run and know-

ing I was going to complete it, although the sleep deprivation was tough at points. “Overall, the challenge was easier than I expected, however I quite badly injured my knee during the last three runs so those were a bit of a grind mentally and physically. However, as David Goggins has proved, when you think you have reached your limit, you are actually operating at 40%.” If you would like to contribute to Alex’s GoFundMe page visit: https://gofund.me/f2eac292 and you can watch Alex’s journey through the challenge on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=1lgMRQzoSRk

Sheffield gets £2 Million Economic recovery fund scheme will provide funding for a range of projects developed in collaboration with local areas, which will be designed to meet the needs of communities across Sheffield.

The Council will work directly with businesses, community leaders and its partners to encourage applications for funding, with a focus on creative and innovative ideas that will boost the local economy of each area. Examples of projects that the funding could be used for includes: • Street closures for weekend markets or community events • Pavement cafes to provide extended outdoor seating • The creation of parklets and repurposing space for alfresco hospitality • Purchasing outdoor furniture and equipment • Commissioning artists to enliven the local street scene

Sheffield City Council has launched a £2m Economic Recovery Fund to kick start projects that will help high streets recover from the impact of the restrictions on trading imposed as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Recovery Fund seeks ideas that will help businesses reopen safely, adapt and thrive as lockdown rules ease and encourage people back to local businesses when it is safe to do so. Many local high streets and shopping districts have been severely impacted by the challenges of Covid-19 and the new one-off

on a rolling basis, whilst larger proposals must be submitted by 30th April 2021. Councillor Mazher Iqbal, Cabinet Member for Business and Investment at Sheffield City Council, said: “We’re well aware that businesses are going to be reopening over the next few months with a lot of uncertainty about what they will be facing and how quickly trade will start to increase again. We’ve launched the Recovery Fund to help alleviate these concerns and to encourage businesses, particularly in district centres, to use this opportunity to showcase what their high street has to offer and create a real buzz in their communities. We want people to feel proud and excited to support their local shops, pubs, and restaurants, and most of all, safe in doing so. “Businesses know their local communities and are best placed to come up with initiatives together that will bring back customers in a way that makes them feel comfortable to do so. Reopening the economy on this scale is something that we haven’t seen before in our lifetimes, so we wanted to put this fund in place to make this an opportunity to do something different. I’m really looking forward to working with businesses and community groups to hear their ideas and to see the great initiatives that are put in place.”

The £2m fund will include a mix of small and large-scale projects. Applications for funding for small projects will be considered up to £50,000 and up to £200,000 for larger projects. The funding will be provided to support a local area rather than individual business and will be assessed by a steering group of councillors and business leaders. Applica- Cllr Iqbal(left), Cllr Bainbridge (middle) and tions for smaller projects will be considered Cllr Hurst (Right) in Chapeltown

LEISURE CENTRE RE-OPENING C o m m u n i t y- ru n Stocksbridge Leisure Centre has announced a re-opening date of 12th APRIL 2021!! All the facilities are to reopen, but again, still operating under strict Covid guidelines i.e, wearing facemasks inside the building, maintaining social distancing, regular hand washing and sanitisation. Pre booking in advance for all sessions is still essential to ensure your place is reserved and you avoid disappointment. Staff will be available at the Centre from Tuesday 6th - Friday 9th April between 9am - 5 pm to accept phone calls for booking of sessions and taking payments. Unfortunately, under the current guidelines, Oxley’s Café cannot open until 17th May 2021, so it will be vending machines only - nor can adult indoor sport and exercise classes recommence until then, but that does mean

all other activities will be resuming. Due to refurbishment work on the pool heat exchangers, the pools were not available for school swimming - but they will be ready and up to temperature from 12th April, after the Easter break. The Centre’s swimming lessons will recommence from 12th April. Those parents who paid for their block starting January will have all unused lessons credited to their next block so no one loses out. Chief Executive, Andy Clarke said, “We have been closed for almost 9 out of the last 12 months so we are delighted to be re-opening and looking forward to seeing all our friends and customers returning to us. We are also keen to see new faces at the Centre and will provide a warm welcome to all new members” Please be aware that construction work will still be ongoing when the centre re-opens

so please take care when entering and leaving. There is well signposted customer access along the front of the building from the main car park taking you to the main entrance and ramp. The area is fenced off and secure to ensure all our customers are safe and the main car park will be open to users. This is part of further improvements in partnership with Sheffield City Council to both Stocksbridge Leisure Centre and Oxley Park through the Towns Fund 'Accelerated Programme'. The investment is being used to create a new adventure playground in the park which will link to a new outdoor seating and toddler play area outside the Centre's new Oxley's Cafe, with improvements to access routes and landscaping and an upgrade to the car and cycle parking at the centre - work is expected to be completed by the summer. Timetables have been updated, so please check-out www. stocksbridgeclc.co.uk for all the latest details.

In 1976 school-leaver Ian Clancy learned his trade at a local doubleglazing company before making the leap two years later of going it alone. A young enthusiastic worker Ian was described as ‘always first on site and last on site’. It wasn’t long before the hard-working Ian bought his first and current premises on Manchester Road in Deepcar, and set up his own window company Deepcar. These premises are now home to a brand new showroom featuring the latest range of products, from tiled roof system conservatories to composite doors. Early success was to follow when in 1983 Ian was named winner of Yorkshire Televisions ‘Young Enterprise - Businessman of the year’ Ian still has the very first door made by Deepcar back in 1978. Still in perfect working order, the door sits proudly at the back of the showroom, illustrating Deepcar’s pride in their humble beginnings. Ian beams “ Our aim is the same today as it was back then - we will provide the best products and best customer service.” He continues “ In today's busy world we pride ourselves in looking after you the customer and will offer the same level of service whether you are having a new conservatory or a lock fixed on your window. Ian’s two young sons Tom and Joe and daughter Alice show the same hard-working and conscientious qualities as their father. They are now helping the successful window company build on the 43 years of trading.

70 Years of Peak District National Park

One month to go! First of the UK’s national parks – the Peak District – celebrates 70th birthday.

derstanding and enjoyment of its special qualities, and to foster the economic and social wellbeing of local communities.

Seventy years ago this year the Peak District National Park became the UK’s original national park, designated on 17 April, 1951.

Seven decades on, the Peak District will share its birthday accolade alongside the Lake District, Snowdonia and Dartmoor national parks throughout 2021.

With the foundations set by a group of pioneering ramblers some 20 years earlier and the work of campaigners, the Peak District eventually paved the way for what would become a UK network of 15 national parks enjoyed today. It was set up to protect the landscape’s natural beauty, wildlife and cultural heritage, to promote un-

The celebration comes as more people than ever are believed to be visiting national parks as communities seek a ‘green recovery’ from the coronavirus pandemic. Chief executive Sarah Fowler said: “The Peak District National Park has been here for everyone for seventy years inspiring the lives of

thousands of residents and millions of visitors. “Whilst no-one could have anticipated the global circumstances in which we find ourselves looking forward to this remarkable milestone, it is perhaps holding a mirror to the Peak District’s ground-breaking early years as people sought sanctuary within the open spaces that contrasted with our daily and urban lives – just as we are now. “However we are able to celebrate – either in person or through the inspiring digital spaces available to us in 2021, I’m sure everyone will want to reflect on the difference our national parks have made throughout the country.

Local Area Committees get the go-ahead Last Thursday, a full council gave the go ahead for seven new local area committees (LAC), which seek to revolutionise how citizens can influence the decisions that matter to them and their communities. In May 2021 the council will transform its approach to the planning and delivery of services, with greater focus, responsiveness, and accountability to the different needs of communities across the city. To enable this, the council will create seven new Local Area Committees covering every part of Sheffield, and plan to shift power and influence for important local

decisions to those Committees over the coming 12 to 18 months. These plans include: • Doubling Ward Pots • Greater involvement with Voluntary, Community and Faith organisations • Increasing the Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) allocation available to local areas to 20% - it is currently 15%, • Providing an additional £100k to each Local Area Committee to be spent, in line with the community plan, on helping with the localised re-building postCovid

• Providing an extra £100K to each Local Area Committee to tackle fly tipping & graffiti • For local parks, parking problems, community safety, each Local Area Committee will have a dedicated officer

“We remain not only a UK family of cherished places but a global network of protected landscapes enjoyed by communities across the globe.”

A series of pandemic-proof activities is available for people to join in: 70 years, 70 remarkable people

Set in the heart of the UK, the Peak District National Park is now a living landscape home to around 38,000 residents, and attracting 13 million visitors a year – its proximity to countless towns and cities often finding it regarded as the most ‘accessible’ of the national parks in Britain.

Celebrations have already begun online with the launch of ‘70 People for 70 Years’.

The 70 year platinum anniversary date is Saturday 17 April, 2021, however, everyone is invited to celebrate throughout the year.

Village pub has defib fitted

Traditonal pub has life-saving equipment installed thanks to locals and customers fund-raising efforts.

Ye Olde Mustard Pot in the ‘little’ village of Midhopestones, has a real community effort to thank for the installation of a defibrillator. Dan Brown, Mustard Pot Manager and Landlord said

• For Youth Services, each area will be involved in shaping and influencing how services operate to meet the needs of young people, delivering general targeted youth work, and positive activities and experiences.

“We would like to announce the arrival of our very own defibrillator. With the help of our locals and other customers we managed to raise all the money needed to get this over the line. It is with with great pleasure to say that we as a community have managed to help with a life saving machine for this beautiful part of the city.

• All local communities will be fully consulted on these proposals as they develop further

We would also like to say Thank you to R1 electrical services for the install of this machine. “

fences, walls and impenetrable gates rather than the hog friendly hedges which used to be used. If a hog can forage over about a dozen gardens it will find sufficient food to survive. Our first task is to create a hedgehog highway to ensure our prickly friends have easy access to our gardens.

This can be done by making a gap of approximately 13cms by 13 c either by cutting a hole In the 1960s Wood Royd Road was dramati- in a fence, removing a couple of bricks from cally altered. We then need to ensure our space is free from large holes or uncovered grates into which the creatures might fall, and remove any unused netting which might entangle them. Feeding your visitors is the next way to encourage them to return. Like us some foods are good for them and others, even if they like them, are not. Meal worms, sunflower hearts, bread and peanuts fall into this category and although a small quantity of these which might fall from your bird table will not harm them, too many are not helpful and can be dangerous. Hogs have a very mixed diet and we can supplement this by buying special food from a pet shop or providing a small amount of cat or dog food. There has been debate as to whether this in jelly or gravy is best but I was told by a friend who rescued hogs to avoid jelly and fish is not recommended by others.

An absolute essential is a shallow bowl of water. Having a log pile in your garden will also provide food and shelter for your visitors. Further food and shelter can be provided by a compost heap but, if you turn yours over, be aware there may be hogs nesting in this attractive site. Another attractive nesting site is a leaf pile which also provides bedding material at times of reproduction and hibernation so, if you want to encourage your visitors to stay, ensure there is a supply of twigs and leaves available by not being too tidy. In fact, it’s useful if possible to leave a wild corner in your garden where these materials naturally lie.

Stocksbridge FUN-icular

‘Once upon a time not many years ago a World Beating, World King Clown was nothing more than the Mayor of London. And the Mayor said ‘There shalt be a Garden Bridge’ but there never was a garden bridge and the mayor never said sorry for spending 53 Million gold coins on his bridge that never was, for it was all the fault of doomsters and gloomsters and he would one day be world king and could never be wrong’

Call 0114 283 1100

Log and leaf piles are the best nesting sites. However, if you want to increase your chances of having a resident hedgehog, an artificial hedgehog house can be made or bought. Instructions for making one can be found on the internet as can suppliers of ready mades. The advantage of having a house is it can be used as a safe feeding station to prevent cats and other creatures taking the food. To further your enjoyment of these fascinating creatures a trail camera can be set up. Upper Don Tree Charter Branch Doris Stubbs

GROWING YOUR OWN

April is a busy month for gardeners – there’s sowing and planting to be done – and it’s time to turn your attention to long lost friends such as your vegetable patch It’s a key month for planting vegetables and fruit in the garden, and from now on until late autumn you will be sowing, planting and harvesting. Finish off sowing seeds for early lettuces, summer carrots, dwarf peas, summer spinach and broad beans and start sowing beetroots, brassicas (broccoli, cauliflower, sprouts and cabbage), peas, turnips and swede. You can also plant the first early potatoes, weather dependent. For beginners, some of the easiest fruits to grow are berries. Strawberries and blueberries love containers or open ground and both will crop heavily once established. A simple garden solution for April is to create your very own veg patch. Mark out the area well, prepare the soil, dig in compost and then sow a variety of seeds that will provide you with veg all year round. It’s a common misconception that you need a lot of space to be able to grow vegetables. You can still achieve real success with container grown plants. Tomatoes will thrive in pots and grow bags and can also be grown in the ground. Another plant that loves container life (and being in borders as well) is Lavender – and it’s the perfect time to plant it

so that you can enjoy it throughout the summer. It’s a favourite with gardeners not just for its beautiful form and fragrance but also because it attracts essential pollinators such as bees and butterflies. It’s considered a romantic flower that most gardeners get the urge to plant in their garden sooner or later and can add real value with its scent and shades of purple flowers and silver leaf backdrop.

April gardening •

Tie back climbing and rambling roses

Keep an eye out for pests and keep weeds under control

Start feeding plants in the garden from now to the end of the summer

Sow seeds directly into the soil so they can flower in the summer

However, lavender does not like ‘wet feet’ as it promotes root rot and ‘dampness’ is often the reason that it doesn’t perform well. It’s a tough plant though and once established only requires regular pruning after flowering has finished in the Autumn.

Sow vegetable seeds directly into prepared beds

Plant summer flowering bulbs

Sow new lawns or repair bare patches

April not only sees the start of National Gardening Week (26 April – 2 May), but it really kicks off the gardening season so here are some top tips for this month from the RHS (Royal Horticultural Society)...

Prune shrubs and trees

Apply mulch or manure to flower beds and pots

Prepare hanging baskets

To successfully grow lavender, it needs to be planted in a warm, well drained soil with full sun. It is often planted as an edging plant with roses or grown as an informal hedge.

Tiger’s sign Aussie Ace

SHEFFIELD have swooped for a fifth new signing to complete their 2021 Premiership side. Australian ace Justin Sedgmen, who raced for the club in the second half of the 2019 season, is to make a return to Owlerton in a much changed line-up. And he’s revealed he couldn’t be happier with the move after a surprise approach from boss Simon Stead. He said: “I’m really pleased and it’s come as a genuine surprise, a real bonus, out of the blue. I always wanted a Premiership spot and this couldn’t be any better for me. “I was looking to go back last year but then they moved up to the Premiership and I wasn’t part of that. “I got a text from Steady

asking if I’d be interested and I replied immediately saying yes in capital letters! “I was a little concerned about just doing one league with Glasgow because I hate hanging around watching meetings when I know I would rather be racing, so now hopefully I can have another 20-24 meetings with Sheffield. “I know Simon has been watching results back here in Australia and I’m now knuckling down to work on my fitness and shed a few kilos for the new season over there in the UK.” Sedgmen has been keenly tracking the progress out of lockdown for the UK and is full of praise for the vaccine rollout. “Watching the news over here and flicking through social

media, the UK is smashing the vaccine and that’s great news, it seems they are well ahead of mainland Europe,” he said. “I can’t wait to get back racing over there, I finished the 2019 season well with Sheffield and I want to continue that and do better, I have unfinished business for sure.”

STEELERS SWOOP FOR Golf Club Gets DOUBLE SIGNING Ready to Open “John is a veteran goalie with a very strong North American career playing 184 American league games with a save .914 sv% and a career 93-63-11 record. In addition, John also played 100 ECHL games with a save percentage of .908 and a career 53-33-14 record.”

With less than a week to go Stocksbridge golfers are champing at the bit to get back out on the golf course.

“He plays a very technical game and reads the play extremely well. I think this a great opportunity to get him into Sheffield and help us achieve our goals.” “The goaltending position was

Steelers head coach Aaron Fox has confirmed the signings always going to be a extremely of goalie John Muse and defensemen Jeremy Beaudry from tough decision. I felt we needed Danish side Rødovre Mighty Bulls for the 2021Elite Series. to go with someone who had Both players will shortly arrive in the UK ahead of the series that commences on Saturday 3rd April. Goalie John Muse arrives in Sheffield with an impressive resume having played 184 American Hockey League games in addition to spells in Russia and Denmark. Beaudry hails from Montmagny, Quebec, and started the year off with Amiens (France) before his move to Rødovre.

Fox commented “Jeremy is a two way defencemen, who plays on both sides of the puck and plays in all situations. He spent the season between France and Denmark and averaged a point per game as a defenceman.” “Jeremy is a key power play contributor and not afraid to mix it up. I’m pleased that he is excited to come in and finish off the year with an opportunity to win something.”

played some competitive hockey this year and was already match fit. When John became available I definitely thought he would be a good fit and give us a chance to win every night. “What made this hard was that Duba is arguably one of highest character and good people I have been associated with in Hockey. I did have a great conversation with Thomas letting him know and he was extremely understanding of our situation. Class act that guy!!!”

It has been a long wait since the current lockdown was imposed by Boris Johnson in early January and the 29 March cannot come soon enough for the Club’s members. Newly appointed Captain, Alan Revill (pictured) said: “like every member at the Golf Club I am keen to get golfing again. It has been a very difficult time for many people in the area and the prospect of the Club being open from next week is a good sign that we may be over the worst.

With a bit of luck the sun might shine as well.” Booking times will be prioritised for members, particularly at the weekends. But if you want to play as a visitor to the Club please contact the Club Professional, Roger Broad, on 0114 2882779. In preparation for playing the Club’s Greens staff have been very busy with early spring course work. The greens have been hollow tined and treated with fungicides which will help the course tremendously as members get back to playing over the next few weeks. But the big news for the Club is the investments it has made in course machinery with new fairway and greens mowers. Green’s Committee Chairman Alf Pearson said: “the investment in this equipment is a major step for the Club. We are a small Club but the cutting machinery we have invested in will help maintain the excellent condition of the course. Last year, despite the impact of the Covid restrictions, we saw a lot of visitors play at the Club and some of them enjoyed it so much they are now full paying members. We have ambitions to improve the course and the Club’s facilities further over the next few years. The Club is fortunate to have a highly skilled team of Greenkeepers.”
