appeal after fire

destroys food stall TRAXX Market was reportedly broken into on Saturday night/Sunday morning. The Little Pink Sugar Pod trailer, which was sited on the market, is believed to have been set alight and subsequently destroyed in the early hours of Sunday morning. The Fire Brigade were said to be fast on the scene to distinguish the blaze before it spread. A passing taxi driver is believed to have raised the alarm. The Little Pink Sugar Pod is a local catering business which has struggled during the pandemic and has now been devastated by the loss of their cabin.

Paul Swift of Traxx market told Look Local “Unfortunately, The Little Pink Sugar Pod was destroyed by the fire. We at TRAXX are all devastated for Claire and can’t believe that people, likely to come from within our community, have done this to a small local business. TRAXX have donated £1000 to Claire to help her get her business back up and running and have set up a Just Giving Page should anyone wish to offer their support to The Little Pink Sugar Pod at this awful time.” https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/littlepinksugarpod

young Playwrights CRIME PREVENTION “excellent” says ADVICE Artistic Director Rob said, “I’ve deliberated long and hard, and eventually with great difficulty chosen a winner. It was very tough as the writing was all really excellent” Rob chose the play written by Izzy McGrail, a gothic horror called “Last Tuesday”. As well as £50 prize, for the winner from Steel Valley Beacon, Rob Hastie has kindly given them free tickets to see “Talent” written by Victoria Wood. Mandy Aitken Artistic Director of Steel Valley Beacon said, “All four plays are wonderful, we are going to put them into production and give the girls the chance to see their work come to life. Working with them through a tough year has been joyous.

During the Summer 2020 Steel Valley Beacon Arts organised a playwriting competition for their youth members. The challenge was to write an original play lasting twenty minutes, covering any topic they liked. Four girls, Chloe Nightingale, Rhona Hirst, Isabel Dungworth and Izzy McGrail took up the challenge and at Christmas the plays were sent off to Rob Hastie, Artistic Director of Sheffield Theatres to judge. Rob was so blown away with the writing that he offered not only to judge the plays but to give the girls detailed feedback.

Our work at Beacon is develop artistic talent, acting, writing, dancing, singing, producing, direction and over the next few weeks our tec team will start to run workshops on sound, lighting and film. We want anyone who has a passion for the arts, anyone who has ever dreamed of getting involved to come and join us. We now offer our younger children passports to leisure through Sheffield Children’s University, in October we start our Arts Award Program and over the next six to twelve months we will also offer drama exams through LCM (London College of Music). As well as all this we are preparing to perform “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” in September and auditions in November for a major production in June – on the scale of “Oliver”.” All this running alongside weekly workshops for children age 5-11 yrs, 11 – 19 yrs and adults.

Police Officers are warning people to be extra vigilant. There has been a number of suspicious incidents reported over the past 48 hours in the Stocksbridge, Deepcar and Oughtibridge areas. PC PARASKEVA warned “We have been visiting people who have reported incidents to us, and completing door-to-door enquiries collecting CCTV footage as part of our investigation to identify those responsible. CCTV footage has shown a group

of five males wandering the street and trying car door and house doors. It is believed that their intention is to steal cars, and that they are using a hook on a pole and pushing it through letter boxes to get the keys.” Can we ask that residents are extra vigilant, and: 1) Ensure all windows and doors are locked/secure (house and cars). 2) Keep car keys away from view of the letterbox. 3) Report any suspicious activity to SYP via 101

or online. In emergency (crime in action) call 999 4) Doorbell cameras and CCTV have proved invaluable in capturing suspicious activity. Please review your cameras for any images of suspicious activity in the last two evenings (especially between midnight and 4am). If you obtain any footage, however small, of suspicious behaviour then please contact SYP and ask for details to be passed to the neighbourhood team at Deepcar.

Police break up party Mayor Dan Jarvis of 50 teenagers in condemns plans Stocksbridge

to increase fares across South Yorkshire

Mayor Dan Jarvis has condemned plans to introduce a 5% rise on some bus, tram and rail fares from June in South Yorkshire and has urged the operators to reconsider introducing the price increase. In his speech today at the Northern Transport Summit he said: “This is beyond frustrating – it is unacceptable. “Price rises just weeks before the final easing of lockdown measures will understandably be seen as an attempt to profit from the fare-paying

public as they consider returning to public transport. “It will damage efforts to get people back on the buses, and hit them in their pockets at a time of great economic uncertainty.” Mayor Dan Jarvis and the South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive invested £17m to keep bus services running during the pandemic. Mayor Dan Jarvis continued: “After so much public support it’s not just tone deaf, it calls into question the effort to build a functioning partnership with bus companies

Police sent to break up a party of 50 teenagers on a Stocksbridge golf course got a pleasant surprise when they turned out to be ultra-polite. They were celebrating their final day of school on Friday afternoon (May 28).

But far from experiencing as we reform our bus ser- rowdy scenes, members of vices. First and Stagecoach talk to us about the value they attach to working in an ‘enhanced partnership’ – and then in practice their attitude seems to be: ‘You pay for the infrastructure; and we’ll put up the fares’. It’s just not good enough. We need a fundamentally different partnership with the bus companies, and we are looking at all options, including franchising.”

South Yorkshire Police's Sheffield North West Neighbourhood Policing Team were bowled over by the civilised response from the revellers.

Officers described their work as the 'best job of the night' and a 'pleasant experience'.

Sheffield pharmacies help in vaccination drive

Pharmacies across Sheffield have joined the fight against covid by running vaccination clinics, giving the public more options of where to have their vaccine. Community pharmacies are leading vaccination clinics from 9 different community locations including churches, a community centre and a leisure centre, as well as from chemists. Pharmacists are highly-experienced in giving vaccinations and provide an extra choice for people when booking their vaccine via the national NHS booking system, allowing people to be vaccinated locally. Alun Windle, Chief Nurse and Vaccination Lead at NHS Sheffield Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “We’re hoping the convenience of having more choice on where to go encourages more people to have their vaccination when offered. We’re doing well in Sheffield with over 309k people now vaccinated with their first dose, we want to keep increasing this figure as we move into the younger age groups.”

Pharmacy vaccination centres, Sheffield Arena and local GP led vaccination centres are offering evening and weekend appointments, making it easier for people to fit their vaccination in around busy work and life schedules.

David Russell, Chair of Community Pharmacy Sheffield, said: “It’s fantastic that pharmacies in Sheffield are joining the fight against covid-19 and providing the vaccination in community locations. Pharmacists sit at the heart of the community, so we are really pleased that they’re able to use their expertise to help deliver the vaccination programme.” The NHS is now vaccinating people aged 30 and older, if you are in this age group you can book your vaccination by going to www.nhs.uk/ covid-vaccination or by calling 119. Vaccination centres with availability will be shown when booking. As well as the additional pharmacy led vaccination sites, the Arena has increased the number of appointments available there. If you are aged over 50, a health and care worker or have a long

"The weekend also marks our fifth birthday, and we would like to take the opportunity to thank all of our customers for supporting our businesses here at Fox Valley since the centre opened and of course particularly over the last year.”

The event will take place in the car park at Fox Valley close to where Home Bargains, Costa Coffee and Card Factory can be found with all covid secure measures in place. HILLSBOROUGH TRIAL: MEN ACQUITTED AS JUDGE RULES NO CASE TO ANSWER Two retired police officers and an ex-solicitor accused of altering police statements after the Hillsborough disaster have been acquitted, report the BBC.

Mr Denton, Mr Foster and Mr Metcalf were accused of trying to minimise the blame placed on South Yorkshire Police in the aftermath of the disaster by altering statements.

Retired Ch retired Det and former had denied of justice.

However, the judge said the statements had been prepared for the public inquiry chaired by Lord Taylor in 1990.

Supt Donald Denton, Ch Insp Alan Foster solicitor Peter Metcalf perverting the course

Mr Justice William Davis ruled they had no case to answer. Margaret Aspinall, whose son James died in the disaster, said the ruling was "an absolute mockery" and a "shambles". "We're always the losers no matter what the outcome today," she said. Ninety-six Liverpool fans died as a result of the crush at the FA Cup semi-final match at Sheffield Wednesday's ground on 15 April 1989.

He said this was not a statutory inquiry and therefore not considered "a court of law", so it was not a "course of public justice" which could be perverted. Prosecutor Sarah Whitehouse QC said they would not seek leave to appeal against the judge's decision. Speaking at the Hillsborough memorial at Anfield, Ms Aspinall said: "We've got the death certificate with 96 unlawfully killed but yet not one person has been held to account."

She said she felt there was "a coverup over a cover-up" but she said the Hillsborough families "could go no further". "They are tired, they are getting old, a lot of them have gone to their graves tormented and to me that is a disgrace," she said. Mary Corrigan, whose 17-year-old son Keith McGrath died in the tragedy, said she was "so angry". She also criticised the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) for their lack of support for the families. Liverpool FC said the decision was a "huge disappointment" and victims had been "let down yet again". Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, who campaigned with the Hillsborough families, said: "We've all given it our all but our all was not enough to secure any

accountability for the 96 unlawful deaths on British soil." He said the scales of justice were "weighed against ordinary people" and called for Hillsborough Law to be introduced. It would place a duty of candour on all public officials and require parity of legal funding for bereaved families and public bodies, he said.

"That a publicly funded authority can lawfully withhold information from a public inquiry charged with finding out why 96 people died at a football match, in order to ensure that it never happened again - or that a solicitor can advise such a withholding, without sanction of any sort - may be a matter which should be subject to scrutiny."

Liverpool City Region metro mayor Steve Rotheram said the decision was a "stain on the judicial system" and "yet another kick in the teeth" for the families.

Claire Bassett, from the IOPC, added: "Serious questions must remain over the public and moral duty of police in helping authorities to understand and prevent a further disaster like Hillsborough."

Sue Hemming, from the CPS, said they were "right to bring this case and for a court to hear the evidence of what happened in the aftermath of the Hillsborough disaster".

Mr Denton, 83, of Sheffield; Mr Foster, 74, of Harrogate; and Mr Metcalf, 71, of Ilkley, had all denied two counts of perverting the course of justice.

She said what had been heard in court would have been "surprising to many".

The three men were on trial at the Nightingale Court at the Lowry Theatre in Salford for more than four weeks.

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These QHHG WR EH ¿OOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

Wadsley Women’s Institute Team Well done to the Wadsley Women's Institute Team who along with Rosa the dog were up on Wadsley common on the morning of Sunday 23 May to paint the trig point. Another member joined the group and brought up the banner. Another member of the team and her husband, had washed the paintwork down the day before and cleaned off all the mould.

Supertram This trig point was first in use in 1948 and is a concrete column 8 ft high, half of which is buried in the ground. It has a central hole and when an instrument is mounted on the top a surveyor would have a precise and reproducible point from which to measure angles to local landmarks, such as Wadsley Church and the dome on Loxley School, neither of which are visible now as all the surrounding trees are much taller. It is 239 metres above sea level. Trig points are no longer used for surveying and are not maintained though are still marked on OS maps.

I am surprised that in reporting the forthcoming tram suspension for essential engineering work you make no mention of the PTE and Stagecoach tram’s complete contempt for its customers as once again the tram link bus will dump its passengers in the middle of no where rather than extend the tramlink bus to connect with other transport.

Great to see the Women's Institute volunteering in the local community, well done ladies. Hannah Isherwood

Yorkshire Trophy Final Liversedge 4-0 Penistone Church (Hosted by Brighouse Town) After a 3-0 semi-final win in midweek gave Penistone Church momentum going into the Yorkshire Trophy Final, Church lost out in a physical encounter going down 4-0 to Liversedge. Manager Ian Richards

Stocksbridge 2nd XI travelled to Sheffield Centralians looking to avenge their lacklustre defeat against Baslow last time out. Stocksbridge were put in to bat, with the opening pair of Firth and Ogley continuing at the top of the order. The pair put on 22 before youngster Firth was dismissed for 12. Bob Newton followed shortly for just 2, leaving Stocksbridge 31-2. This brought returning Dave Smith to the middle, who looked to rebuild with Chris Ogley. The pair looked in great touch, with Smith taking on the bulk of the scoring, hitting boundaries from his first over. Smith raced to his half-century with a flurry of boundaries. Ogley continued to keep the scoreboard ticking and provide excellent support for Smith.

Eventually, Ogley fell for a wellmade 42, registering an 84 run partnership with Smith in the process. Jack Murfin now joined Smith at the crease, and the pair began to propel Stocksbridge towards an excellent total. 4s and 6s were being hit to all parts as Stocksbridge accelerated in the last 15 overs. Stocksbridge finished on 185-3 from their 40 overs. Dave Smith registered his highest ever score in Green Army colours, finishing on 80*, superbly assisted by Jack Murfin, who ended on 40* in very quick time. Stocksbridge’s fielding effort got off to an ideal start, with captain Thwaites clean bowling Centralians' captain Wainwright after just three deliveries. Opening bowling

Church lose final Saturday 29th May 2021

Captain Andy Hibbert won yet another toss and selected to bowl first. Things couldn’t have started any better for the 1st XI. Hibbert and Jake Vickers shared the new ball and the pair of them struck in their first overs.

Jack Newton and Matt Price opened up the 1st XI and Newton dispatched the second over of the game for 22 runs. From there they made easy work of run chase with Newton in full flow and Price anchoring from the other end. After 10.1 overs the game was over and the score easily chased down. Newton finished on a well made 52* with 8 fours and 1 six, backed up by Price who finished unbeaten on 14*. A dominate and commanding performance from the 1st XI who make it three from three in the league”

Alistair Nicoll

University Staff were off to a terrible start, slumping to 18-6 with only 16 overs being bowled. Liam Grayson and Joe Hibbert came into attack looking to back up the excellent start with the ball from Hibbert senior and Vickers. A 30 run 9th wicket partnership took Staff up to a score of 63. However they were bowled out for a disappointing 68 with both Hibbert junior and Grayson picking up two wickets each. A superb bowling and fielding display from the 1st XI who looked firm favourites to take the victory.

Firstly it’s nice to play a competitive tournament in this really unique and challenging season for a number of reasons includpartner Brearley joined the party shortly after, removing Stow for 2. When Thwaites removed Khan’s off stump for 0, Centralians were floundering at 13-3. Thwaites brought Paul Hargreaves into the attack, a change perfectly vindicated with Hargreaves removing the dangerous Bajwa with his very first delivery. Centralians never really recovered, falling well behind the run rate due to some excellent bowling and brilliant fielding. Wickets continued to fall at regular intervals, with Hargreaves helping himself to 3, and Brearley running out youngster Hinchcliffe. Stocksbridge couldn’t quite manage to bowl Centralians out,

ing the pandemic so thanks to Brighouse Town and their manager Bill Powell for inviting us, I’m glad we treated it with respect and we got through to the final. I‘m obviously disappointed to lose any final in any competition, I didn’t think it was a four-nil score line. I thought our performance, particularly first half was very good, we were playing against a team of physical, sort of aggressive players and they played to that strength. We had a game plan to try and reduce that, it worked first half to a certain extent.

with the hosts finishing on 85-9. Hargreaves the pick of the bowlers with 3-11, well supported by Brearley 2-14 and Thwaites 2-25. Stocksbridge the run-away winners, taking 25 points back to Bracken Moor due to the fact Centralians did not reach half of the Stocksbridge total. A superb performance and excellent response to a poor defeat last time out.” Photo is Dave smith who scored an unbeaten 80 for the 2nd XI.

Oughtibridge Ladies win final Oughtibridge WM Women 3-2 Loughborough Uni It was finals day at Arnold Town FC and Oughtibridge secured the East Midlands Regional League Plate with a narrow 3-2 win against the elite athletes from Loughborough University. The early stages were pretty even with the War Memorial women not quite finding their rhythm and It was the students who took the lead on 25 minutes with a superb back post header from a left wing

free kick, with the celebration from players and supporters showing what it meant. But Oughtibridge got back in the game almost immediately, Millie Kenyon’s wicked cross being deflected home for an own goal to give the Oughtibridge contingent a chance to show they were there. The sense of relief was palpable and it got better a couple of minutes lat-

The students were skilful and quick up top and 16 year old keeper Molly Hutchinson had to make a couple of brilliant blocks at the feet of onrushing forwards whilst long serving twins, Abigail and Holly Towns, made some excellent last ditch tackles. At the other end Jen Pearson, playing a false 9, started to get more of the ball and was moving it about skilfully to the dangerous wing duo of Kenyon and Laura Cain, who forced the keeper into a good save from a cross shot.

The students came out of the blocks quick and Oughtibridge had to defend the opening period with another youngster, Lorna Perry, giving an assured performance at full back and experienced midfield duo of Laura Watton and Jen Selman digging in and using the ball to good effect to get Oughtibridge up the pitch. Mudge was rolling back the years at sweeper and on 61 minutes her lovely long pass sent Kenyon free down the left, she beat the full back and put a low cross in for “Little Messi” Fowler to slot home under the keeper to make it 3-1. On a warm day the fresh legged subs of youngster Maisie Brennan, experienced Annie Longmore and new mum Chloe Shaw played vital roles as Oughtibridge saw the game out against naturally fit opponents who pressed to the end, grabbing a 2nd goal on 83 minutes to make it a nervy finish. Jubilation at the final whistle and a great achievement for a team missing lots of seasoned campaigners. At the presentation the EM league committee congratulated both teams on a fabulous game before awarding Emily Fowler a much deserved Player of the Match and Kathryn Mudge the coveted League Plate on behalf of a very happy group of players.
