Victim’s statement “I was 8 years old when I can remember the first incidents taking place, and I remember feeling so scared and confused. I really didn’t understand what had just happened to me but something told me it was wrong and because I felt it was wrong, I also felt I'd been naughty… I felt so trapped inside a nightmare I couldn’t escape from. My abuser was always there. He was part of my family and I couldn’t get away from him… I also suffer from terrifying flashbacks… without any warning and they cause such overwhelming panic… For me it is a life sentence, and what's more I am completely innocent.” Judge Roger Thomas QC told 63-year-old Hardcastle: “You had not been in trouble with the courts or the police over the years, but you have been convicted last week of six offences of indecent assault. These date back to the late 70s and early 80s, beginning in 1978 and the early part of 1979 when you were 20 years of age. "From those formative years, she (the victim) was subjected to these offences.” He told him the damage done to his victim, who was left scared and confused by what had happened, had carried through to her adult years and caused her severe psychological harm, before she finally disclosed what happened in 2019.

CHALLENGE 750 DONE

A man and his son have walked for 750 minutes around Sheffield to raise over £1600 for The Salvation Army.

Having lived in 4 countries in Africa – Kenya, Malawi, Uganda and Nigeria – he is more acutely aware of such situations.

Goff Payne of The Salvation Army says he has been touched by the knowledge that so many people in parts of the world go without - sometimes for want of better training and access to resources that we take for granted.

He told Look Local, ‘When I read about the 750 Challenge it made an impact on me, and I wondered how the '750' could best be used as a challenge for me. A 750-minute walk seemed a good idea given that we live so close to glorious open countryside.’ Walking from Edale, taking in Kinder Scout, Bleak-

low and Margery Hill, High Bradfield and ending up at the base of Loxley Common seemed a suitable challenge that would take at least 750 minutes (12.5 hours). Our son, Duncan, who lives nearby, and who grew up in Kenya and Malawi, wanted to be part of the action, and possibly to keep an eye on his 'old man'! We completed the walk a few weeks ago and have so far raised over £1600.” In addition, the local Salvation Army church at Hillsborough Tabernacle, Proctor Place is putting on a table-top sale at 10am on 7 August, so that this figure can be boosted. Bric-a-brac, clothes, and other items will be on sale, and refreshments available too. The Salvation Army’s Feeding Hope CHALLENGE 750: “In 2019, close to 750 million – or nearly one in ten people in the world – were exposed to severe levels of food insecurity” Choose your challenge based on the number 750 and take part anytime, anywhere before the end of August. First Ecclesfield Cub to earn all Cub badges Thomas Tredoux, ‘Tommy’, has become the first Cub attending Ecclesfield Cub Scouts to earn all the activity and challenge badges.

with his determination to completing his goal and have never seen a young person so dedicated to gaining so many badges.

An amazing achievement.

Tommy told Look Local:

Usually, Cubs earn activity badges based on their existing interests and hobbies and work towards the challenge badges to gain the top Cub Scout award the Silver Chief Scouts award. However, Tommy decided he would like to gain all the badges available to him during his time as a Cub Scout.

“I like spending time on the water and managed to get 50+ sessions of sailing, canoeing, kayaking, and rafting which earned me a badge. I love sailing and I go to the Pennine sailing club every week.”

Over the last two years he has worked hard completing badges during and outside of pack nights, showing his Cub Leaders what he had been doing with great enthusiasm, even during lockdowns through email and zoom meetings. The Cub Leaders, who volunteer their time to run Cubs, are impressed

“I enjoyed trying new sports e.g. martial arts, snowboarding, scuba diving and horse riding (with my next door neighbour teaching me). I now go snowboarding regularly.” “I found the hardest badge to get was the athletics plus as I worked all summer to complete it. I had to run 50m in less than 11s and also throw

a cricket ball over 22m, this took lots of practice.” “The most interesting badge was the science badge as I love experimenting. I mixed coca cola and mints to create a volcano of coke which made a mess and had fun building water rockets, air rockets and a pop pop boat.” “It was really tough getting all of the badges, but I am proud of myself.” Tommy’s Mum, Emily, says: “I am really proud of Tommy for achieving so much, he has earned 38 activity badges, 1 activity plus, 16 staged badges, 7 challenge badges and his silver chief scout award badge, he was also made a seconder and yes I've had to sew every one of them on. I couldn't be prouder of him.”

Staindrop lodge ...Continued from front page

Residents have complained about a catalogue of antisocial behaviour at a homeless hostel, including mums and children feeling intimidated walking to school.

timidated while a Housley Park resident said their children had been harassed for food and cigarettes and there were people selling and taking drugs.

The Staindrop Lodge in Chapeltown closed in March 2020 in response to the pandemic and was leased by Sheffield Council to accommodate homeless people under emergency coronavirus legislation.

One Thorncliffe View resident said: “Their behaviour is both intimidating and antisocial. I do not wish for my children to see drunks at 8am wandering the streets, however, this has been the case when I have taken my daughter to school.

The council arrangement ended in June but the Fairhome Group wants the hotel to be converted permanently into 44 bedsits for homeless people. But more than 300 residents have objected saying it would be totally unsuitable in a neighbourhood with young families, pensioners and several schools. A Mortomley Lane resident said: “I witnessed two residents lying in a bus shelter surrounded by cans of beer. We have had empty bottles of alcohol thrown at our car and thrown into the front garden. “I have been approached for money outside the Tesco petrol station and my husband has witnessed begging in the street outside the Spa most mornings on his way to work. “We have residents stumbling into the middle of Mortomley Lane almost getting themselves run over by oncoming traffic and very nearly causing a major accident. “Needles and other drug items are discarded near the pond and worryingly close to a children’s park. “I have witnessed residents knocking on doors asking for money. All of this is suddenly happening in a family community on a daily basis.” An Ironstone Crescent neighbour said their family had been shouted and sworn at and in-

“They also decided to have a mass brawl in the car park of the hotel as I walked by, shouting obscenities at one another.” Another Ironstone Crescent resident said: “We always walk our children to and from school and on most occasions we experience them drinking alcohol, whilst others are clearly high on drugs early in the morning. This is causing anxiety for our young children on their way to school.” And a Coppice Rise resident said: “The hotel is in close proximity to my child’s school and I have on a number of occasions witnessed people clearly under the influence of drugs in the immediate area at the beginning and end of school. This makes me and my child feel unsafe.” When Sheffield Council ran the hostel it had a 24 hour on-site officer, security and arrangements with local policing teams to respond to any anti-social behaviour. But the council and South Yorkshire Police are both concerned the new application does not include any plans to offer on-site support services, security or safeguarding measures. Planning officers are advising councillors to refuse the application at a meeting on Tuesday, July 27.

People urged to have covid vaccine as cases rise in Sheffield A chief doctor in Sheffield is urging people to have their vaccination as covid restrictions are lifted. Most covid restrictions were lifted in England on Monday 19 July meaning there aren’t limits on how many people can meet or attend events and nightclubs reopened. However, this doesn’t mean covid has gone away. Cases of covid are rising in Sheffield with the latest figures showing 580 cases per 100,000 people. Cases are now as high as they were in January 2021. It’s now more important than ever that people have their covid vaccination. Dr Zak McMurray, Medical Director at NHS Sheffield Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “Thank you to the people of Sheffield for getting their covid vaccine. 60% of us are double vaccinated, which is fantastic but we need to keep going. The best way to end the pandemic is for as many people as possible to get both doses of the vaccine. “As we start socialising more and spending more time around others, please get your vaccination to help to prevent serious illness, hospital admissions and deaths from covid19. The vaccines are saving lives.” It’s not too late to have your vaccination, if you turned down the offer initially but now want your vaccination you can still book an appointment or turn up at one of the city’s walk in clinics.

Quadri Adeboye from Sheffield had his second vaccination at the pop up clinic at Sheffield United Football Club earlier this month. He works in a role where he comes in to contact with a lot of people and wanted to protect himself and others. He also had the vaccine to enable him to travel more freely. He said: “The way the government have put things in place for travelling, that you don’t have to isolate when you’ve had two jabs, works for me. Having to isolate for 10 days would affect my income. My family live abroad so it means I will be able to see them quicker.” For some people, covid-19 can cause symptoms that last weeks or months after the infection has gone. This is called long covid. Around 10,000 people in Sheffield have long covid, including plenty of young people. Dr McMurray continued: “Long covid can cause over 200 symptoms including fatigue, anxiety, and impotence. The best way to avoid long covid is to not get covid. The best way to not get covid is to get vaccinated. get vaccinated today. “I would also advise that people continue to keep their distance from others when out and about, keep wearing your face coverings when in crowded places and isolate and book a test if you get symptoms.” You can book your vaccine by contacting 119, online at www.nhs.uk/coronavirus-vaccine or by visiting one of the daily walk in clinics in Sheffield:

The South Yorkshire leaders and I have already made journeys much cheaper for 21 and under with our Zoom passes, now it’s time for everyone else to enjoy cheaper bus and tram tickets. I hope everyone takes advantage of this discount over the summer, whether that’s to get to work, see family and friends or to visit some of the fantastic sights that South Yorkshire has to offer.”

“We’re investing millions in building a worldinfo@dysonfunerals.co.uk class public transport network here in South Yorkshire, www.dysonfunerals.co.uk and we’re also investing in getting people to use it. Your Letters Staindrop Lodge Planning Application Dear readers Our fight continues to stop the planning application to turn Staindrop Lodge into a permanent homeless hostel. On Tuesday 27th July Sheffield City Council will consider the private planning application by Fairhome Group PLC – and we will present our petition opposing the plans. Over 1,400 local residents have signed – many doing so after reading about the petition in the pages of Look Local. In May we were not re-elected as councillors but we remain committed to the local community and our area, and will continue to do everything we can to get this application stopped. We are hopeful that the plans will be turned down and the Council’s officer recommendation even makes it clear how bad the planning proposal is. As we have stated all along - this proposal is wholly inadequate for the area, and would not address the support needs of the highly vulnerable people it proports to serve. We will let readers know about hearing result, and if anyone

would like to be kept further up-to-date please let us know by emailing sheffield.labourgroup@ outlook.com Many thanks

TRAMLINES Your report on Streets Ahead preparation for Tramlines begins “ as the city looks forward to tramlines returning” seems to overlook the fact that many of your readers are certainly not looking forward to the return. We face overcrowded trams during the day and no trams at all in the late evening. We face the closure of local roads and the lack of parking. With the trams being suspended no doubt more people will be encouraged to drive exacerbating the parking problem and congestion and no doubt leading to increased drunk and drug driving. No we are not looking forward to the festival. Alistair Nicoll

Cyanotype is a sunlight activated ‘cameraless’ photographic printing process that produces a cyan-blue print: Using film negatives and positives, plant material and a host of other 3 dimensional objects can be used to create interesting and artistic images and marks on paper, fabric and a range of other surfaces able to absorb the light-sensitive chemical solution. A lumen print is a solar photogram - an image created on photographic paper, exposed by the sun. It began as one of photography's earliest experiments in the 19th century.

with some mazy runs. Church opened up the Prestwick defence and a long-range shot drew a good save from the goalkeeper. Church could not convert the rebound. 10 minutes in and the game began to settle, with a tremendous Prestwick passing move down the right and a rasping shot from the left. Church showed some promising touches, but gave away a soft free kick 25 yards out. The wall did its job. Church played some good football down both flanks, but they could not convert their chances. Church launched forward with great interplay on the left, Luke Stewart put the cross in the back of the net only for the linesman to flag for offside.

Church showed more promise with a corner that just scraped past the far post. Again, Church were on the front foot with some great passing. Church broke down a Prestwick move in midfield and the 3 on 3 situation nearly led to a Church goal, but tremendous Prestwick defending took the ball away just as Kieran Ryan shot.

Church created a couple of half chances from the kick-off, but chose to pass rather than shoot. Church’s high pressing game paid dividends with 3 Church players bursting through, the goalie was well protected by his defence, but the resulting corner was met at the far post by Ash Ellis who kept the ball alive. The defence failed to clear and Jordan Coduri (pictured) shot hard and low to the right of goal.

Prestwick had a free kick on the far left of the box, the direct shot hit the left-hand post and went to safety. Church then created 2 clear cut chances but did not score. Church brought on 4 substitutes. Kieran Ryan broke free, his cross was met by Charlie Shepherd whose header from 6 yards was well saved. Prestwick moved the ball well but their chances on goal were few and far between, a speculative shot sailed high over the bar and then a couple of Prestwick moves broke down. Church continued to ask hard questions of the Prestwick midfield but could not spring the offside traps. Church moved the ball down the left, Kieran Ryan took the ball deep into the box and reverse passed it from the touch line to Charles Shepherd who shot first time into the right of goal. Prestwick immediately took the ball down the Church end but their finishing again let them down. Full Time - PCFC 2 Prestwick 0 Another impressive Church performance sees them move into the new season with a good win under their belt. Prestwick Heys had brought a merry band of supporters who were set on enjoying the warm Clubhouse and its well-stocked bar.

PRICE KNOCK SECURES BIG WIN Stocksbridge 1st XI 248-9 (M Price 91, J Newton 64) Sheffield Super Strikers 144 all out (J Hibbert 2-26, A Hibbert 4-46) Stocksbridge won by 104 runs Stocksbridge 1st XI travelled to Scholes, where Sheffield Super Strikers were the hosts. Looking to make it back to back wins 1st XI skipper Andy Hibbert won the toss and elected to bat first on what looked a really good batting track. Openers Matt Price and Jack Newton took to the crease and the pair quickly got into their stride. Newton was the destroyer

as he continued his good form with the bat. Every bad ball was dispatched to the boundary, with Newton in complete control of the innings. He brought his 50 up in style in quick time, with the score 64-0.

Price was anchoring superbly well at the other end as Newton continued to kick on. Newton would depart for a well made 64, after a brilliant caught and bowled. Price was joined by Andy Hirst who started off really well and was supporting Price who really began to kick on. Hirst was removed for a well made 24 been being clean bowled.

Price took the baton off Newton, with the 1st innings beginning to really motor on. Price was growing in confidence as the innings went by, with the Super Strikers bowlers struggling to give Price anything to worry about.

Price was well on for his 100, until a superb one handed catch in the deep stopped him in his tracks. Price, departed to the pavilion for a brilliant 91 and fully deserved his standing ovation. Both openers being removed by two brilliants pieces of fielding. The 1st batted the 40 overs out and finished on a commanding 248-9, Super Strikers had a lot of work to do to get something from the game.
